unbelievable… I drank that wine last night with spaghetti and meatballs…nothing special until it had been open for 3-4 hrs and then was a really nice wine.

Mix it up? Sure. But you did propose another double blind. as for the area, a great area for pizza/pasta pairings — QOTD –Salice wines and various Primitivos over the years

I’m looking forward to the long format shows. I like the concept.

QOTD: Never been to Italy. Haven’t had much Italian wine either for that matter. I need to expand my pallet in that direction.

QOTD: the answer is yes. I had three bottles of the wine you reviewed today) (it might have been the 07, I got it at Costco the are gone so I can’t check.) over the last month. Goes great with your weeknight pasta and gives a little complexity for very little money. There are some great deals that can be found in Italy.

You still don’t understand meatballs…until you’ve tasted my mother-in-laws meatballs (straight out of Sturno Italy, a little town outside of Avilino). They are insane.

QOTD: I’ve never made it to the heel of the boot.

QOTD : Yes. Recently the 2004 Tarabuso Primitivo, the 2003 Cantele Reserva Negroamaro/Malvasia, and the 2005 Li Veli/Passamante Negroamaro. All for around $15. Great value!

Thanks for bringing another one to my attention.

    Cheers!

Fantastic with the new format! Very digestible and will be a great change — although looking forward to the super in-depth eps as well. Gotta keep it fresh! Also love how you’re getting into an educational aspect a bit more these days (but always with an emphasis on FUN, which is a breath of fresh air).

QUOTD: Never been to the heel, although I’ve seen the usual suspects of Italian tourism… I NEED to go to Sorrento and Sicily…

1 wine certainly mixes it up! Don’t get crazy and do like a week of 2 wines- that might crash the servers.

I like the idea of mixing up the formats. You never know what you might get one evening.

QOTD: I don’t think so though I’ve had Primitivos you have rated but forgot the region.

    Cheers!

One wine? How about 4 glasses for 4 wines instead of 1 glass for the show? Mix it up. GO back outside, that was way fun. Spit in the parking lot. Got roof access? I’m getting into this…

  41. January 19, 2009

    Yvettew

I do like white pepper. It’s used in a lot of asian cuisines and adds a hot, not spicy pepper taste. Great in clear soups and marinating because black pepper burns on the grill or stove!

QOTD: Nope, haven’t tried any wines from Italy’s boot :(

  42. January 19, 2009

    NY Pete

oh yeah QOTD … Yes … A Mano Primitivo and Taurino Notarpanaro come to memory.

  43. January 19, 2009

Yes, Negroamaro and Primitivo. I have also enjoyed Aliatico which I think is from southern Italy, but I’m not sure.

  44. January 19, 2009

A Mano Primitivo and Piluna Primitivo… The latter is much better in my opinion but A Mano is easier to find…

I went to Europe over the summer, visited ports in Italy and drank some really good wine but no recollection of the names. Also am a white pepper fan, great in egg drop soup.

    Johnnyutah

This is really weird…I opened the 2005 felline primitivo that u recommended in episode 300 and something about 2 hours before I watched this show. Your tasting notes were right on the money…the orange was an obvious call, however you found oregano on the nose and palate that i wouldnt have gotten without your help and it was dead on. Great bottle for 12 bones, cheers!

I agree southern italy is a place i always have my eye on for value. It is unfortunate that selection is limited in my neck of the woods.

  49. January 19, 2009

    Robin C

QOTD: when I was last in Italy I was too young to drink wine.
The last time I used white pepper was in a white sauce so that it didn’t have ugly black flecks in it. That was quite a while ago. I still have the white pepper though.

  50. January 19, 2009

    SurfCityJay

I hope she said YES!!! Please report out…

And meatballs… boy, did have a great batch with some spicy meat sauce last nite… AWESOME!

QOTD: No heel as of yet, but will be looking for this wine FOR SURE!!!

I’m a huge fan of Puglia. The A-mano Primitivo 2001 got me seriously into wine. The metallic base it had and the way it transformed really intrigued me. (I wasn’t much of a fan of the 2003, haven’t tried the latest vintage yet.)

I had the Neprica this fall (not sure what vintage) and thought it was pretty unimpressive. Don’t remember what I didn’t like about it, but it was definitely something I wasn’t interested in buying another bottle of. I wasn’t a big fan of the 2006 Botromagno Primitivo either, which I think you guys sent out an email about.

The 2005 Felline Primitivo di Manduria was awesome, I would definitely buy more of that if you guys get it back in.

The best I’ve ever had, was the 2004 Cantine del Colle Primitivo Falco Grillaio. You need to track down this wine and start carrying it!

I like the idea of the different formats. It will be interesting to see what people like more. Also, meatballs are all about having enough breadcrumbs, parsley, and Romano.

QOTD: Only one, and I couldn’t tell you which. My daughter’s father-in-law is from Puglia, and they have a few very old bottles of red vino around. They don’t drink wine much, but are just keeping it as a keepsake, investment maybe, don’t know. But the labels are very uninformative, primitivo-like. Not IGT… The wine was not memorable.

Will eventually try the Bogle PS, but when I can splurge – it’s $20 in British Columbia! So normally a pazzzz, but just for curiosity/standards testing.

GOOOOO CARDS!!!! I’m off to Phoenix next week, and will have to settle for watching the Coyotes.

  65. January 19, 2009

    my2cents

NO heels but maybe some toes.

You might try doing short format with a guest?

Puglia is on my radar now.

  66. January 19, 2009

    Little Jonny H

I’m always for rockin’ the boat, and will be highly anticipating the marathon shows!!! The more wines the merrier!

QOTD: It’s uncanny; I just opened my first Puglia wine this afternoon, an inexpensive and acidic red to go with some left over pizza and my homemade sauce (the pizza needed more of it!).

Il Filare Rosso 2006 – Sangiovese and Primitivo blend

  67. January 19, 2009

Having a dinner party on Friday and was not sure what I was going to cook until this episode. So going to make my chicken parm with smoked mozz and serve this wine.

Awesome interaction with your fans Gary. I am constantly amazed that you put this much time and effort into us.

I have not tasted the hell, though more than once I have tasted the sock from the boot… But thats another story

  68. January 19, 2009

    Shemp

QOTD: Never had a wine from Puglia. Unfortunately we don’t get great distribution and retail of Italian wines.

  69. January 19, 2009

I enjoy the variety of lengths of shows. I have noticed that some of the older episodes are a bit shorter. I hope that the show doesn’t go anywhere anytime soon. I once read a yankee’s blog and the guy had a child and that was the end of the blog.

qotd; i have not had a wine from puglia and seeing as though i am from a small town in MN i will probably not be able to find one (Minnesota has some lame wine laws that prevent shipping to our state.)

  70. January 19, 2009

    amgryger

QOTD: I love wines from Puglia and they were actually some of the wines that got me into drinking wine in the first place. Castel Del Monte and Gravina have some sentimental value for me as I’ve been to both places, so I really enjoy giving them a try when I can find them.

  71. January 19, 2009

QOTD: No, not yet… I will look for some this weekend!
P.S. Thanks for being my FB friend :)

  72. January 19, 2009

QOTD: Yes…Patriglione is probably my favorite…but the 99 over the 97. The 97 was a little too prune & raisin driven…

    Yo Homey,

You wanna talk meatballs??? You ain’t had a meat ball till you had mine Brother. I’m tellin ya, I make da best in da dirty Jerz!!!! With a name like D*G******o you know I know what I’m doin. Where was this place you had a meat ball at?

Anytime you’re in da mood you call me and let me know and I’ll make a pot for you and Mott and bring’em by for you to try. You can eat’em on the show, you can eat’em in the snow but one thing fo sho is you’ll be wantin mo’…and that’s a fact jack…!!!!!

QOTD…. No but I alawys wanted to go becasue my Grand Parents came from Bari. Gotta go one of these days.

  74. January 20, 2009

    J Crazy

I’ve tasted the toe, the heel, the inside sweaty laces…only thing is I can’t remember the name of the Puglia wine.

I like the one man-wine format. In fact, I like all formats!!

  75. January 20, 2009

    DaveyDonut

QOTD: yes, in fact, it’s a wine from Puglia that got me into wine! I had been drinking wine casually, just whatever was available, but nothing ever really grabbed me. Then I was at an Italian restaurant and got a bottle of the 1999 Taurino Notarpanaro and it knocked my socks off. It was so different from any other wine I had before… very complex and earthy flavors, but also somehow a hint of brandy. Loved it, and still do. After that I started exploring other Italian wines and eventually fell in love with things like Barolo and Amarone. Yum!

  76. January 20, 2009

    Tenacious E

The Neprica isn’t a bad wine for the price, but my only quibble with it is — what’s with the Cabernet? Is Cabernet native to Puglia, or do they just throw that in there because they don’t think we can handle a blend of two wild-ass Italian grapes without being frightened off?

QOD: definitely, love the Taurino Salice Salentino in addition to several different Primitivos. Wonderful stuff.

  77. January 20, 2009

    Micha

QOTD: Yes, agree. South of Italy brings some really good, value-driven wines (Primitivo, Negro Amaro). But this region also delivers tons of crappy stuff (you might remember the latest winescandal in Italy 2007?), so one has to be carefull..

Wow..I happened to buy this very wine yesterday! I’ll try it tomorrow.

  79. January 20, 2009

    David T

QOTD: No, but since at least this bottle is widely distributed I’ll be looking for it! I do like a great meatball, and I know what you’re talking about there.

I think I’ll like both versions of the show you’ll be doing these next few weeks- I’m always looking to learn more (today’s was informative!) and as always the more wines to look for/expand the palate the better so I’m looking forward to the massive shows as well!

  80. January 20, 2009

    Ryan Fish

Congrats to the soon to be married couple.

QOTD No I have not had the heel that I know of.

I look forward to you mixing things up on the show.

  81. January 20, 2009

    Adam J

I’m digging the new format ideas, definately looking forward to the long episodes.
QOTD: I had a Salice Salentino several times that was awesome but I dont have the name of the producer, I remember it being very rustic and juicy. Thanks for the show!

  82. January 20, 2009

    Marshall

QOTD:Yes many:Primitivo, Negroamaro and blends of Montepulciano.

  83. January 20, 2009

    Ian Leong

Crazy coincidence. I just bought a wine from the Puglia region just last thursday. 100% Negro Amaro, haven’t tried it yet. Great value at $17 Singapore dollars. Which should translate into about $7 USD.

QOTD: Yes. Casa Milani Rosso – Negro Amaro & Malvasia Nera bleng.

  84. January 20, 2009

    Phil G

format ideas for this/next week sound great – when you do a whole bunch of wines – maybe you can throw a double blind in there? something like 10 red wine taste off (w/o pre-knowledge of price, grape, country, or region). might be fun to see you squirm a bit! whatever happens, thanks for the effort, it is much appreciated!

qotd – i;m not sure. i tasted a lot of wines from all over italy, but feel like i’ve done more from sicily…

  85. January 20, 2009

    Hey Gary,
    Like the new format.

Funny enough, I actually designed that Tormaresca label with my boss Jeffrey Caldewey.

I’m surprised you didn’t mention this was an Antinori wine. I worked with Albiera Antinori via email (one of the three daughters of Piero), very nice woman.
I haven’t tried the wine, but I have a bottle sitting in my studio. Maybe I’ll pop it open right now!

Try not to make the shows tooooo long next week. We’re all very busy, but don’t want to miss anything either!

  88. January 20, 2009

    Heather W

Oh my gosh, that was so cute! Someone proposed via the Thunder Show, I love it.

QOTD: Heck yes, I sipped a Negroamaro in a beach house in Sant’Andrea. I also drank unnammed organic table reds made by the locals courtesy of my Italian “family” at the time. I have absolutely no clue what grapes were in it, but it was yummy.

  89. January 20, 2009

That was cool, I like your ideas for the future of the show. Can’t wait to watch you taste 13 wines from the same region!
QOTD: Yes: Solice, Irenico I can’t remember the exact blend, but I think it was from that region.

  92. January 20, 2009

    ILKKA S.

    QOTD

    -Virtuoso Primitivo Puglia 2004
    -Allora Negroamaro 2007
    -Voga Italia Quattro 2006, MERLOT (30 %), CABERNET SAUVIGNON (30 %), SHIRAZ (30 %), PINOT NOIR (10 %) unusual bottle!!
-Duca di Camastra Sicily Nero d’Avola 2007
-Il Bali Aglianico del Vulture 2004, AGLIANICO (100 %) (This grape varietal I find very interesting, I highly recommend people to seek some up).
    - I also tasted one Shiraz + Viognier from Siciliy but I lost the notes but it was quite good. Hope to see more of those as well, besides the local grape varieties which are also very tasty.

To sum up, South Italy is a very good place to find good red wines w/ good value.

Awesome review! My roommate tasted it with me and he said it tasted like toilet water! lol To each his own I guess:

QOTD: Not yet. I’m relatively new, only been tasting around for about a year. I’ve went through the majority of the varieties of South African, Australian, and Spanish wines, so maybe I’ll make Italy my next stop on my personal wine world tour.

Interesting direction with short and longer episodes. I’m exited! Bring it on.

Oh, and bring BACK a cheese episode and couch fridays.

qotd: no, though maybe by accident in the past when I wasn’t this aware. Italy used to be just Italy. Tnx Gary!

Hey Gary, like the new format…while we love the show period…everything needs a “freshen up” every once in a while, great idea.

I’ve had primitivos, barberas and dolcetto d’albas…making my way around Italy one bottle at a time!

    Gary…
Love the idea of in-depth focus on one wine… more opportunities for greater education, greater education = more opportunities for changing the wine world!

Keep up the rockin’ the passion for life, love and humanity, my friend!

    Hey – nice “deep” show..

Great to see a nice wine, with some complexity from Puglia – In my time I have had sooo many dissapointments from this region BUT of course I keep trying and exploring ;-)
(QOTD: Yes, have had many – we sell Puglia-wines in the boatloads, as every-day wines)

I did like this compact show – but I must say I’m looking forward to the looong shows – I love it when a show goes on for a while, especially when there is a guest present, so your conversation becomes relaxed and free :-)

Many thanks Mr. GV, for keeping the thunder alive and mixing it up ;-)

I have licked the heel of the boot…Mainly Salice salentino and some primitivos

    QOTD: Yes

2007 Castel di Salve Armecolo Salento Rosso (80% Negroamaro and 20% Malvasia Nera di Lecce) and I’ve also had other negroamaro wines from this producer.

And 2001 Taurino, Salice Salentino, Rosso, Riserva

  107. January 20, 2009

    Susan B

Yes. I have definitely had Primitivo on more than one occasion. (I used to work with a Chris Mc Grath–wonder if it is the same one).

  108. January 20, 2009

    Chris Braun

Enjoyed the one-wine format — and I’m sure I’ll enjoy the long episodes too. I like that you mix it up.

QOTD: I’ve had a few wines from Puglia. A recent example is Albert Longo Cacc’e Mmitte Di Lucera 2005, which is a blend of Uva di Troia, Montepulciano, and Bombino Bianco.

  109. January 20, 2009

    joeblackasnite

QOTD: Oh yeah! I have had the past three vintages of the wine Gary tasted today. 2 years ago it was strictly a negroamaro-cab blend, it is way better now!

  110. January 20, 2009

    Alan and Gayle

QOTD: YES! Wow, we had this exact wine last night in the 2000 vintage.(bottle still on table) We could not pick the same characteristics as you, may have been the vintage difference or maybe we just suck at reviewing wine. Anyway, we scored it an 86 on cork’d about 12 hours ago.

No, but I’m curious about your first “QOTD” and what she said. :)

I like the new format, especially if you’re going to go into detail about some of the history and legacy of a type. I’d like to see more broadly educational (maybe one every two weeks) on par with the classic episode where you tasted all sorts of jams, jellies, socks, to expand your palate.

  115. January 20, 2009

    ex-lurkdawg

qptd: yes, I’ve had the wine you tasted today and several other Puglia IGT and Salice Salentino DOC wines. I can’t name any other producers, but I’ve been happy with quite a few of these wines in the $9-$16 range. I love the earthy funkiness that many of them deliver while maintaining balance with a good amount of fruit.
Thanks for another good show. I like when you do more wines, but this format is nice too. Maybe one of your marathon shows next week could be “other” (non-port) fortified wines and include 3-4 Madeiras with a vintage Madeira included. It’s just a thought.

  116. January 20, 2009

    italianwinelover

Love this region…good Italian wines at fantabulously good prices! Like the new format sometimes I just don’t have 20 minutes in my day-life gets so busy at times I don’t know how you keep it up! Love the learning part too – give us more 411 on the wines!!!!

QOTD: YES had many but haven’t bought any recently have to revisit it!

Congrats on the engagement hope it all works out! Will they name their first boy after you too!! :)

    Nice show G-sauce!

QOTD: I have explored that area, because that very wine is one of the few “different” things that my local store carries. I’ve said before that I’m from a po-dunk town in New Mexico, and there are really only a couple places I can get wine. I don’t like yellowtail, and I get sick of Penfolds and Rosemont…so I go with what they’ve got, and the Tormaresca is one of my faves.

  120. January 20, 2009

QOTD: Yes! I used to drink Puglia in college quite a bit – Price point played a big roll in that.

Good luck Cynthia and boyfriend/perhaps fiance at this point (depending on how Cynthia took it).

My husband, daughter and I were in Puglia this last summer. My parents were born there and we took a trip to see the area.

We were introduced to a red wine in Puglia that we luckily found at a wine store in New York City.

Alberto Longo, “Le Cruste”, 100% Nero di Troia. We love it!

Hey Gary, now that I’m not thinking about the Eagles non-stop anymore, I was wondering if you are going to be at the Atlantic City wine spectator show? $200 bones per ticket is a lot, but worth it if you are going to be there. Let me know, and come to Philly already…

Loved the show focusing one one wine. Its nice to go in depth and take the time with one wine. Nope never licked the boot but am planning too. Spent the last year learning about Italian wines and this show was a big help.

Love the idea of a long show. I am there!

  126. January 20, 2009

I know Puglia wine-wise. Great QPR as you said. BTW: There is an Italian wine varietal that has usually a great QPR, too: Montepulciano.

  129. January 20, 2009

    John Cannata

Short show. I have noticed that you keep saying you want to switch it up. I thought we would have seen the ‘double blind’ again since you were not completely happy with that episode. Personally, I like it when you taste a few wines and give your feedback. Love the episodes with guests (but not everyday). You are very energetic. I’ve seen a few of your keynotes and enjoyed them. I’ve only been a viewer for about 3 months, but I suggest not shortening the show. Keep it to 15-25 minutes and continue to taste a few wines. Switch it up? Sure, but at the same time, don’t take away what has been working for 3 years. Just my 2 cents. All the best!
p.s. since I have not commented before, I’ll say now CONGRATS on the new baby.

Love the new idea, it gives time for more insight. Looking forward to the possible Lodi tasting since I live in the area and would love to hear your take. QOTD: No but will try!

    Hi Gary,

Changing formats, great idea. Can I put a HUGE vote in for the wine buyer format you did recently where you tasted 4 or 5 totally different wines and decided if you would buy them. I loved it, put a real ‘value’ on the process of tasting.

You could even get a (super confident) rep in to be the guest as you tasted his/her wines!

PS as a non-American, congratulations to you all on today becoming again the world’s greatest nation.

    David Dadekian

QOTD: I haven’t had anything from the heel. Thanks for the info, Gary. I’m looking forward to some new show formats, though I hope I can find the time for hour longs. I barely watch hour-long TV any more (and they’re not an hour with the DVR). But change is good!

Serendipity! I went to my local wine shop Monday after work and did my typical: “Willie, I need 5 bottles of red all under $10.” This wine was one of the five. I look forward to drinking it tonight.

  137. January 20, 2009

    Mr.Ambassador

    Hey Gary,

Todays show was so remarkable! I had just purchased the Tormaresca Neprica (the 2007) on Saturday along with several other Italian wines. As soon as I opened up the wine library TV window and caught sight of the label I knew it was one that I had just placed in my wine racks!

I quickly paused the video and opened the wine and for the first time I was able to sip along while you sniffed and tasted! I wish we could receive your secret-packs in Washington State so I could enjoy the experience more often! Maybe you could once again disclose a few of the wines you’ll be sampling in advance so Vayniacs can sip along?

I could certainly taste the “Good and Plenty” licorice flavor and your notes about the soil-flavors rang true. I also noticed quite a bit of dark fig flavor/molasses cookie taste appearing well into the finish. As this is the 2007 I’ll be coming back in a few hours to see how it’s evolved.

As I recall the grocery selling this had quoted a Wine Enthusiast 90-point score (2007). Really a nice value.

PS – We make homemade meatballs and spaghetti sauce every couple weeks and they are fantastic! The fresh homemade meatballs have so many different ingredients (ground meat, eggs, parsley, onion, garlic, parmesan, herbed bread-crumbs) and after browning in olive-oil they cook for hours in reduced wine, tomato and sauce ingredients so they are really flavorful!

The Gavi wines we sampled with spaghetti and meatballs this past week were fantastic!

  143. January 20, 2009

    BobbyTiger

Thumbs up for the one wine review, as sometime it is difficult to find 35 or 35 minutes. It also seems to afford time to get into the wine a little more.
Who knows where the wine came from, as I rarely drink Italian wines, but the Taurino Salice Salentino I have found to be a relatively good wine at a good price point….($13.00 or so).

  144. January 20, 2009

    Chris B

What a coincidence, I just tried this wine at a liquor store in Missouri on Sunday, and decided to pick it up for our store in Oklahoma. I thought it was pretty good too, especially for the price!

  145. January 20, 2009

QOTD: No heel wines yet, though I have met an Italian from Milan who says that many Italian export wine is from south Italy without being credited to that region.

  146. January 20, 2009

    Neil

QOTD: I tried the Tormaresca very recently and my tasting notes were similar, tobacco, licorice, slightly bitter tannins, earth, etc. Another wine that is a QPR winner is the Falesco Vitiano. Both are good mid-week spaghetti wines. Regarding meatballs, my recipe is derived from Rao’s recipe and is killer comfort food.

  147. January 20, 2009

Gary, you are so crazy! That’s the main reason why I like so much this show, apart from learning about the wines of course! Congrats to the just engaged, that had the merit to be original!

QOTD: Been to Italy, but not to the heel. Next time we do southern Italy and Sicily.

I like the quick hitter show featuring a single wine. It allows more time to concentrate on that wine and possibly other aspects of the wine world, different varietals, terroir, etc.

Out of the last ten bottles of wine I have had 5 were Italian.

    GO CARDINALS!!!!!!!!!!

I can’t find the Tormaresca Neprica in my area, but I will be looking for some wines from Puglia, especially those with the varietal that is new to me, the Negroamaro.

I like the short and sweet format. More in-depth analysis of wine is educational and entertaining.

    Keep bringin’ it Gary V.!

Good show… definetely appreciate you talking about price point and in this economy it is so important to know how to pick up great wine at a great price! I hope Cynthia says yes for that fellow! Would love to see you do a show on a wine from Greece!

QOD: Unfortunately havent been there! But will go soon!

Question for Gary: If planning a trip for wine tasting what region if the world would be best to go do this in?

  172. January 20, 2009

    OSCAR FALCON LARA

Way to go with the proposal. Cool.

QOTD: Yes, my friends and I bought two bottles of Borgo Canale in Brindisi while waiting for a ferry to take us to Greece. Needless to say we had to stay on deck the whole time but the bottles were just what we needed for a stark boat picnic: they didn’t last, we sunk those in less than two hours, it was such a cool trip.

I haven’t tasted the Tormaresca, but will look for it soon.

Yes, drank a 2002 Tormaresca Castel del Monte Bocca Di Lupo.

    Great wine. From cellartracker:
1/7/2007 rated 92 points: Color is deep red with medium legs. Aroma of Wet rocks, rose petal, dirt, macerated cherries.
Taste of black cherry, rose petal, round red fruit. Lots of tannin in the front to mid-palate. Very chewy at this point with cherry flavors. Long smooth silky finish. Drank it too early. Probably an even better wine when the tannins melow.

QOTF Yes infact i had and still have the Tormaresca but its 2003. 70% Negroamaro and 30% Cab. Fantastic wine that someone asked us to get into the store. Glad you did an episode on the 06!

  177. January 21, 2009

    Brian Barrick

Haven’t tried any Puglia wines. From your description it doesn’t sound like this Neprica is something I would enjoy, but it might well be worth the small investment to expand my palate. Wines that taste like dirt just don’t generally appeal to me.

I’m surprised you didn’t even mention that this wine is not aged in oak. The last Italian wine I had that saw no oak was the Bricco del Cucu Dolcetto di Dogliani. It had a strong bitter metallic taste that completely ruined it for me. I’m not a fan of the Oak Monster, but too many Italian winemakers seem to think their only options are 100% new oak or no oak at all. As in so much of life, moderation is the key here.

  178. January 21, 2009

gary, i really like the idea of one bottle per day for a week or 2 then a set of big verticles.

i would love to see a show of 1st and second wines from bordeaux ie las cases and clos du marquis…. for example. also some village wines with their borgogne counterparts. and maybe some CDP or gigondas with some CDR from the same domaine.
    keep it up

    Yo Gary
Thanks for the show. My Grandfather is from Pulia (Lecce). This fall I made Montepulcianno from grapes of Pulia. I have to say, they where the most beautiful wine grapes I ever saw. In fact, my boss (the owner of the winery) is there now buying grapes for this falls crush. I will try the Tormaresca Neprica this weekend. Thanks again

QOTD: Had a really lucky find on Becco’s wine list. A Primitivo from Puglia that was awesome! This was back in the day when I’d only drunk like ten wines in my LIFE, and I think it was a turning point for me.

  183. January 21, 2009

    Sassodoro

QOTD. Many, many. I find that Negroamaro often has a peppery quality that I especially like with pepperoni pizza. Negroamaro is sometimes made in an “Amarone style,” where the grapes are partially dried before pressing. That gives it a plummy, almost raisony taste.

A very interesting but lesser known grape variety from Puglia is Aleatico. I haven’t had many, but all that I have had have had a really interesting rose petal nose and flavor.

  184. January 21, 2009

    Emily & James H.

QOTD: Quite a few. As of late, have been digging the whites from Campania and Basilicata, particularly Ciro and other Greco Bianco-based wines. We’ve also had others from the Tormaresca label, though this one sounds much better.

Variety is good–can’t wait for the super long marathons!

  185. January 21, 2009

I like the shorter, more-educational format. But, honestly, an hour-long show would suit me much more during the summer when the TV season is in reruns and I have more spare time.

After spending some time in Apuglia for work, I have been searching these wines out and yes their value is unsurpassed. The Producers I like primarily are Appollonio, who have a wide range including many different Negroamrro’s, I like their “Elfo” a lot, they seem to come and go from the stores at will. Zachy’s carried them for a while. Santa Lucia, with a DOC from Castel del Monte, their Vigna del Melograno is made with 100% Uva di Troia and is terrific. I got this for $12.99 at Garnett in NYC and bought a case immediately.

    Jerry

Hey Gary. A great idea to change the format but only one wine seems a little “lacking” to me. What about talking about/demonstrating/tasting some foods or cheeses that should go with each? Use ones that others might recommend and use your tastebuds to give it up based on the combination. That still would not lengthen the show dramatically and it would (at least for me who is “food-matching challenged”) add a good dose of increased interest and value. Just a thought. Keep up the good work.

I have tried this wine and while good, I prefer the pure Negroamaro wine made by Tomaresca. It truly is outstanding.

Yes. Layer Cake Primativo. Wasn’t sure why they had “Zinvandel” under the “Primativo”, but you explained it .

This wine is really smooth and tasty.

Puglia – Yes ! Conserva Aglianico ‘05 and Conserva Annachiara ‘05. Made with Organic Grapes. Enjoyable wines.

Have not tried any from the heel but from how you described it, sounds like my kind of stuff. Is it similar to an Argentine Malbec?

I have got to say I always find the one wine format a little lacking – not that I am complaining, as I absolutely love the show and it is fantastic that you have kept it going free of charge. Having just one wine seems to really limit the discussion and appraisal, whereas having multiple wines really helps get a great idea of the area or grape.

QOTD – I’ve only had a few from Puglia.. unfortunately the one that sticks in my mind is a cheap (and horrible) Primitivo. Have never tried the negroamaro grape.

First time comment but I’ve followed your show for about 6 months.
Italian wines are hot but in the south my customers have not warmed up
to the “strange” labels yet.I’ll work on that.
I want to see a road trip to the south sometime in the future.
It’s ok to keep your shoes on the entire time!

Nice show. Short and sweet. Good idea, mixing it up. A one hour show about Zins would be fantastic as well!

QOTD: No. I have been to Sicily though, and had homemade wine from the grandmother of someone I met while traveling. We poured it right from the barrel into a 1 gallon milk jug. The town was called Misterbianco, in the shadow of Etna, which actually was erupting while I was there in 2001. We had to watch out for the police (the garage doors opened directly onto the street), because what we were doing could have gotten us thrown in jail, or stuck with needing to offer a bribe we couldn’t have afforded! It was fun, and the wine was not what I would call good, but it was more about the experience.

I am not a fan of the 1 wine format – unless it is a wine of particular note. I prefer to learn as much as possible about as much as possible in the short time. MORE BLIND TASTINGS!

QOTD: YES! I have had a couple of Negroamaro blends with Mascarello and Greco Nero from this area, as well as many Primitivo di Manduria on the “heel.” I’m ALL about the Aglianico from over the border in Campania, and lately I’ve dabbled with a few wines from Calabria a bit south.

    I hope Cynthia said yes!!!

P.S.- Shout out to discovering, and being blown away by, REAL meatballs!

Yes, Tormaresca with Rigatoni alla Bolognese!

Love the single wine show, nice quick show with some education built in! Keep it up GV!

    Congrats on the engagement, hopefully!

Q – I have had a number of wines from this region, a number of Salices and others, i’ve also had today’s wine and I agree…a nice value. I feel the value wines coming out of here and Sicily in the $10 to $12 range are far superior to those from many other places.

Wow, now that is an announcement!
QOTD: I have had a Salice Salentino. I found it kind of bitter, but I’m thinking I should have decanted it.

I’ve been to Italy but not the boot (heel included). But I am fairly certain I’ve had wines from the Puglia region. My very favorite Italian wines experience happened in the cellar of a winery in Tuscany—many course dinner prepared by Grandma Nonna (who looked just like any one of my dearly departed elderly ancestors), paired with wines of the region. I thought I’d died and gone to heaven!!

As for meatballs (AND red sauce)—my husband declares mine the very best. So I’ll take his word for it! I am Italian (both sides of my family), and hubby is half. Mangia…and a salute!!

Puglia is a really interesting part of Italy to visit. I didn’t really have anything specifically memorable while we were there, but the local wines always went really well with the food. Def had primitivo, salice salentinoa and negroamaro.

In a little coastal town just north of Bari had some decent homemade rosso and bianco. My Italian wasn’t very good so never did figure out what he made the wines from. At least I didn’t go blind ;)

I like the1-wine show idea as a change of pace. Thanks for all the hard work you put into this

Yes! In fact, the Tormaresco Neprica is one of my favorite recent finds, though it is $12-$14 here in Hawaii. I have tried about six wines featuring Negroamaro and have loved each one, so anytime I see it, or a wine from Puglia I am sure to pick it up.

GV – we will have to see how the new format works. I think i may lean more toward the one or two wine shows.

QOTD – Yes, I have had Puglia wines before. No, I do not remember the brand. Yes, I tend to like wines from Italy and therefore my assumption is that I liked it.

GV, i had to re-comment on this episode…I had a bottle of Taurasi 2003 reserva Salice Salentino last night that for me had serious thunder!! My friend was making some awesome homemade pizzas and the pairing was incredible. The few years of age on it seemed to really have it in focus and it almost had a little nebbiolo “vibe” to it. I was so stoked on it that I had to leave a comment on this episode. Thanks!

Correction: Taurino was the producer of the last comment. I might add that tonight I went out and found an 2006 IGT wine that is 100% negroamaro..it is also very tasty.

I am sorry to say not yet. There are so many regions in the world and I have a limited amount of funds and time, my list just grows longer each episode.

    Enjoyed the shorter show.

QOTD: Yes, Amano Primitivo. It was semi-decent, a good “Tuesday night red wine” to my palate.

I have had at least one wine from Puglia, but as usual I can’t remember the name!
    It was fantastic though.

Gary – I really like the one wine format! It’s nice to go deeper into a wine and it’s region. I can’t say I’ve ever had a wine from Puglia, but my wife has had many. She should; her family is from there!

  218. January 29, 2009

    Brittany

Yes definitely…quite a few in fact…I really appreciate the dark fruit component that they tend to have…and in my opinion they are very drinkable wines. In fact, a Primitivo that I had a Cork wine bar in DC was probably one of my recent favorite wines. It’s made by Duca Carlo Guarini, from Le Vigne Vecchie (old vines) and it was a 2004 vintage from Salento of course. You should try it out!

My meatballs rock the house! I even got French people to like them! :o )

QOTD: Unfortunately, I have never had one. My knowledge of Italian wines is shameful. I do like them a lot, but have mostly stuck to the Piedmont and Tuscany.

Had a Negroamaro(don’t remember the producer) a while back and didn’t like it much. I’ll give the grape a fair chance and try another one.

Found this episode while looking for info on Puglian wines.
Our favorite ‘everyday’ wine is the primitive, A-Mano, from Puglia.
    Have you tried it?
