line of the day – it was going to be – ‘In its day this was the Cindy Lauper of Chardonnay’ but then along came ‘Mott, what if you go straight down on me’

Very good episode featuring good wines. Gary’s good mood is infectious…the more he enjoys himself, the more I enjoy myself.

  • Ramey, Hyde Vineyard 2005. Also like Elyse but this is strictly list as they don’t normally produce enough Chardonnay to sell. On the past, my favorites have all been Puligny Montrachet but the price has driven me out of that market. Real surprise on the Oz Chardonnay because normally, they are so oaky to me I can’t drink them.

  • It’s a good idea to take a vacation now, as when the baby is born, you won’t have time to take a pee!
QOTD: I’ve never had a premium chard directly in my mouth. I had a nice Chablis a few weeks ago, though.

  • BruceP

QOTD: Don’t have a favorite. Hardly ever drink Chardonnay. Probably some relatively cheap white Burg whose name I never evan bothered to note.

Super show GV, I love the battle royal format. I was super stoked the other day for a 2000 Chablis 1er cru Vaillon that I had in a 375ml bottle…until I popped it.. and it looked, smelled, and tasted like sherry:(
QOTD: 2005 Saint Veran Les Chines, as well as some Macon-Uchizy that was a great QPR. Thanks for the show!

  • Yo! Gary & Mott – keep up the thunder. The wife and I are really appreciating the TivoCast distribution – makes it easier for both of us to watch at the same time and talk about the show. Keep it coming!

GO STEELERS!! Favorite chard…2003 Zondernaam, from Tokara’s other Stellenbosch label, got it for R45 or $6 in American bones, so dont know if you can consider it premium, but havent matched up a chard since. What do you have against Pittsburgh anyway?? Bet…If Arizona wins, I will drink Mexican wine for a month, If Steelers win you have to do an episode on Mexican wine wearing a Polamalu jersey and wig.

Man, you are 1 cool guy. Great energy, always. Thank you.

QOTD: 1994 Kalin Cellars Chardonnay…this wine is in my top 3 of all time, and I’m a red wine drinker! Kalin holds their wines until they feel that they are ready for release. They just released the ’94 a year ago!
You should do a show featuring Kalin. Word.

Gotta love those new and improved Aussie chards. Movin away from the oak
bombs and really bringing out some great balance.

QOTD: Remoissenet Montratchet 1997. Phenomenal balace of oak and acid with
black wlanut skin for days on the nose.

Enjoyed the show GV. I like the idea of comparing and contrasting varietals from different parts of the world.

QOTD – this is a tough one, but I will try by region:
    – France – Domaine Leflaive Corton Charlemagne
    – US – Martinelli single vineyard
    – Australia – Leeuwin Estate Artist Series Margaret River

QOTD: Just had the Domaine Drouhin Arthur – loved it. Creamy; candied orange peel; 50% cask, 50% stainless steel. Had to go on a long, winding, dark, scary, snow packed road with 9 foot show drifts to get to the restaurant with the wine tasting, but since I didn’t have to drive it was doable.

G – NPR spot was good. Been a Scott Simon fan for many years.

Does Cakebread and Far Niente belong on that list (stylistically)? Far Niente most often seems way austere (for my PAL)- but most def. ageworthy…
Cakebread is simply a pazzz (sic).

Fave MIGHT have been some of the older Mer Soleil’s , c. 90’s.

I have been away for a while as the mother board on my lappy blew up during a WLTV episode – the bill is on its way to you Mr G.V as we speak.

Had a great chardonnay the other day but the name fails me….think it was called Back to Back.

Great show. Shocked the Aussies took it. Me and my preconceived notions thought France would take the crown home. QOTD: Never had a premuim chard yet.

    Hey Gary,

The Shaw and Smith kicks ass doesn’t it, their sauvignon blanc is also fantastic.

I noticed you have been giving subtle diggs towards wines from NZ and Aus with screwcaps?

You did it with the selaks ice wine and now with the Shaw and Smith. When will americans catch up do you think? Is it still a representation of quality in the US.

Whether you know or not there are several wineries around the country who are prohibiting corks with cork free zones. My uncle lost well over $40K to bad corks on a ’99 Hawkes Bay Chard and with such bad bottle variation with other wines which suppliers try to get me to stock

Can you please do on air a comparitive vertical tasting of one or two new zealand or australian wines from vertical years with crewcap Vs cork. I think it will make for interesting viewing. I have done so twice with:

Rockburn Central Otago Pinot Noir – 4 screwcap, 4 cork from same years
Clearview Estate Hawkes Bay Reserve Chardonnay – 2 screwcap, 2 cork from same years.

Episode 364 rocks by the way
