I love the cut-in with your prediction. You should start doing more of that, then look back and see how accurate you were. Love the blind tastings.

Don’t drink much Chilean wines but I do remember drinking a Veramonte SB in 2000 that was simply delicious amongst a bunch of wine geeks at a friends house. I think it was the 1997 or 98 vintage.

    CBone

I love the blind format, and I love the new side of the desk. It is good to mix it up.

And dang, let’s hear it for California!

QOTD: I had some gigundo Carmenere from Chile at a steakhouse once, and it was nice with the food. I can’t recall the name.

Blind tasting format is working very well. Maybe you should do one a week for a while?

    Hello Vino

Two favorite things about this episode:

    1) Big ass glass
    2) Blind tasting (always fun)

QOTD: Fav Chilean wine: Carmenere from Maipo (with a little Gorgonzola)

  22. February 16, 2009

    Sarah newton

Damn. I thought it was a competition with my “4″

Best wine from Chile I’ve ever tasted is the Don Melchor. Pretty standard answer but not had many Chilean wines.

QOTD: We had a 2007 Quintay Sauvignon Blanc recently that was really solid. Lots of acid, some stone fruit and minerals and it went great with food.

I always enjoy the blind format. The flashback was perfection!!!

Fun show GV! Love the blind tastings! How about a double blind show next time?

Q – Santa Rita Casa Real Cab. Also, I have had some reasonably priced pinot from Chile that has been quite good for the money.

    John Watson

I love the blind, but please don’t put what the wines are in the middle of the video. I like to not have my opinions influenced until I see what Gary sees.

Wow I made top 20 on a holiday!

  28. February 16, 2009

Burgundy disappoints yet again! & cool flashback, Mott!

QOTD — haven’t had a really excellent wine from Chile. Yet.

  29. February 16, 2009

    The Swede indeed

Love the blind tasting format… more! more!! MORE!!!

Always fun with the riedel sommeliers burgundy glass!

GV- you haven’t aswered my mail (sent about 6 months ago). Just wanted to say that you should try the wines from Aalto, ribera del duero on the show. great show otherwise! Although a few more episodes a week would be nice.

GV, thanks for the restraint on the cursing..the level of quailty for the show is definitely improving.

O.K. please test my theory#5 and #3 “Made the grade” are perhaps even good to great wines, but will you do another pinot brown bag, and take the 2006 Sojourn and pit it against 2005 or 2007 “Contestants”
Here’s my theory: 9 times out of 10 knowing nothing else (weather, water, sun) a odd year is better than an even year – yes, I KNOW it doesn’t make sense, but years of research… and all that! Now don’t get me wrong, if you told me “this 2002 XXX is fantastic and you gotta get some – DONE! but again, blind standing in the wine shop, I’ll pick an odd year! Let me know what you find out!
FANTASTIC show – I loved the blind taste test!

Thank you so much, Gary, for choosing my request! What an honor. (Even more so with your selection of Sojourn — it’s one of my very favorite Pinots.)

    QOTD: Root 1 Sauvignon Blanc

    Bob Connors

Love the blind tasting. Only request is NOT to link up the wine names before the reveal at the end. Keep it up!

    Rick D

Really enjoy the blind tastings. Great to see the lower cost vino hittin’ it out of the park. I am all about QPR, especially in today’s economy!

QOTD: I’ve had a Carmenere that was very enjoyable, but I don’t recall the vineyard.

The Pinot from your Thanksgiving secret pack, Christophe Buisson, was really rockin, it just needed a couple of hours decanting to open up.

  39. February 16, 2009

    cma82

Great show. I really like the cross-region aspect. A lot of fun and good results.

I think you should make t-shirts that say: “I think this comes from somewhere un-traditional…like Nuits-St-George”

Hey Gary, really like the blind tests, it’s fun to see you surprised,
and I learn to really trust my own palette and not go by preconceived
notions, so really good stuff there.

  41. February 16, 2009

    Simon

    Great show; love the blinds!

QOTD: 2004 Amayna Pinot – I got into this a couple of years ago on a recommendation from my local wine store. Yes it’s a bomb, but it’s just so damn delicious. These guys (Viña Garcés Silva) also make a serious Sauv Blanc (and an interesting Barrel Fermented Sauv similar to Cloudy Bay Te Koko). They’ve also just started releasing their Syrah (in very small quantities) but sadly I’ve not had the pleasure.

  42. February 16, 2009

    Luden’s Cough Drops!

Great show I actually opened a 2003 Volnay Jean-marc and was drinking from my B.A.G. when the show came up in e-mail…great timing

QOTD: Without a doubt the best Chilian wine I’ve had is a Concha Y Toro Don Melchor

  45. February 16, 2009

    shawnandlu

Great show the blind tastings always seem to throw in a curveball.

QOTD: It is not even close, Don Melchor!

You mock me w/Facebook talk! (17K waiting, *sigh* I joined for you..)
Awe, I missed Today show!! Sniffy, sniff…Will follow link to watch.

QOTD: Best so far? Concha y Toro Cab..Don Melchor..2004..In fact, I have a bottle, maybe I’ll pop it open this week. :)

I like the blind tasting…but it seems to be too many wines…in my humble opinion. :)

    Love you Gary!!

LOVED IT BLIND! I love pinot and I have heard that 2007 for Cali pinot’s is being compared to a season of the century!

The blinds are always fun to watch/ the tags popping up to tell us what’s in the bag kinda sucks, maybe you could add them a day or two later?

QOTD:2004 Vina Almaviva Puente Alto – Cab/Crmenere blend

  51. February 16, 2009

    mrfroopy

In all the time i have been watching , i have noticed that you never seem to tag a bottle as “off” corked, over baked, va or too much Brett.. could the Jadot be corked?

  52. February 16, 2009

    Derek F

I really loved this show, I also enjoyed watching on Ustream…we always have fun with that!!!!

    QOTD: Santa Rita Carmenere

  53. February 16, 2009

Fantastic show, answering your question about Chilean wines, I fall in love with the montes chardonnay every time I open the bottle. I get a lovely green apple from it and strong finish I can’t shy away from. Let me know what you think of it!

  54. February 16, 2009

    Dr. Horowitz

Carta Vieja Organic Pinot Noir 2004 Aconcagua valley

I can’t find it in the US. Get some and I’ll buy a case!

  55. February 16, 2009

    Richard Ritter

Thank you once again for taking the time to do a very interesting show. You may be a “Triple Z” player, but I really don’t see Bill Gates taking the time to do a webcast almost everyday. You’re a “Triple A” player in my book. Not suprised Cali took the winner’s spot.

QOTD: I like the EQ from Chile.

  56. February 16, 2009

    Dominick Mack

Gary – It’s the Ricola cough drops you’re thinking of.

  57. February 16, 2009

montes sryah from chile good value too

  58. February 16, 2009

    Micha

Once again a really great show, Gary. And a suprising result too.
QOFD: Best so far was the Concha y Toro Marques de Casa Concha Syrah 05/06. For my Palate even above the Don Melchor, because i’m not in love with that little rustic tannic cabernet style.

    Greetz from Germany

    Nice flashback too.

Great show. I think once a week you should go blind.

    QOTD:Don Melchor Private Reserve Cab.

    excellent format for the show

shocked with the burgundy showing….i have been guilty of pimping NZ and burgundy and bedowngrading oregon/cali

had to eat some crow with this episdoe

  62. February 16, 2009

    rowland

wow Mott, working today, earnin that pay. hey think you can link and zoom all at once.

WO WO WO, since when does “dry” mean it has lots of tannin? I though “dry” means no residual sugar?

hey 8 is my favorite # too.

Gary come on, we all know the KoolAid man does not say “what up.”

wow i just had a flash back!

Gary, I love the blind tastings! Keep doing them.
Unfortunately, I can’t remember the best Chilean wine I’ve had, but I know I’ve had some that I liked a lot.

  66. February 16, 2009

    Danilo

Loved the show, Gary! Blind tastings are fun!

QOTD. The best chilean wine I had… hum… I would say Amayna Sauvignon Blanc Barrel Fermented 2006.
Casa Marin wines are good as well, but a little pricey, in my opinion.

  67. February 16, 2009

    Douglas

    Gary,

The Chilean wine I´ve had was

Viu Manent – Single Vineyard 2004 – Cabernet Sauvignon

    Gary,

the bests Chilena wines I´ve had:

    1) Viu Manent – Single Vineyard 2004 – Cabernet Sauvignon

    2) Viu Manent – Single Vineyard 2006 – Malbec
    (oh yes, Malbec from Chile)

    Doug

    Craig Hamlet

Hey Gary, I enjoyed today’s show on Pinot Noir. I am just starting to enjoy this varietal after all these years. I took your advise and found 6 bottles of Sojourn 06 Sonoma Coast online and they told me it is going fast. Thanks!

  71. February 16, 2009

    sam

    Awesome show!

    I love blind tastings!

QOTD: I haven’t had many wines from Chile, let alone a Pinot. I always found their Cabs over-oaked.

Am I the only one who finds Portuguese varietals sometimes have Pinot-like characteristics? For example the Quinta Bons-Ventos fromthe Estremadura and the Meia Encosta which is primarily Touriga Nacional, along with some Jaen, Alfrocheiro and Tinta Roriz. They are rare, but some wines come out quite Pinot-like: light, smokey, red fruit, acidic, etc…

  72. February 16, 2009

    Phillip Cole

Hey this will be my first post and i gotta say i love the blind format its very informative. As a young man and new to the wine world i have to say i am already very exploitative and this helps me at a starting point to try in different regions without the fear of buying the worst they may have to offer.
Thanks so much and ill be watching.

  73. February 16, 2009

    Dr. Dan

    Love the blind tastings–adds intrigue.

QOTD: I’ve had the 2005 Amayna from Chile, and recall liking it but didn’t save any notes. The 2007 Casa Marin Sauvignon Blanc was very good. I’m getting some 2004 Valdiviesco Cab Franc next week that I’m pretty excited about.

  74. February 16, 2009

    Lizzy 43

Ludens cherry cough drops, the only kind I would take as a kid. Loved the blind tasting!

  75. February 16, 2009

    Biznas

I love love love the blind tasting format. Please please please do more blind tastings.

QOTD: the only wine I have had from form Chile so far is a Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon from Montes Alpha. I did like it and need to try more Chilean stuff

You the best Gary, Thank you so much for all the shows.

  76. February 16, 2009

    Sarah newton

Actually Gary, I had that Louis Jadot in a rather dodgy motel somewhere in Reims and its complete dirt. I felt exactly the same way about it, I remember giving it back to the somm, myself and my brother retreated back to the motel and popped a €10 vacqueyras drunk from plastic beakers and gazing out over the motorway…. it was 10 times the wine.

  77. February 16, 2009

    BillC

QOTD-2004 Concha Y Toro Terrunyo Carmenere was a very good wine at around $25.

Really like the blind tasting. Seems like you score French wines higher when you know they are French. Interesting to see that Pinot go down in flames. Was it any better when you re-tasted?

  78. February 16, 2009

    Scott EJ

Great show and nice picks by Ian.

QOTD: I really need to venture out more in the Chilean worl of wine; especially the Pinots. Of the few I’ve had, some carmeners, cabs, and chards seemed to be the ones I’ve liked the most. Casa LaPastolle, Cuve Alexandra tops my list.

    Thanks for the show.

  79. February 16, 2009

    Ohio Bruce

    Love the blind format.

    QOTD: Los Vascos Cabernet Reserve

  80. February 16, 2009

    Marshall from Mammoth Lakes, CA

I like your blind tastings and hope to try that myself. At Thanksgiving, I had a 2006 Azul Profundo, Biobio Valley, Chile. I thought it was very good. I thought it had good acid and I remember a root beer effect that I saw in another review. But, rather than have it with a meal, I would’ve liked to sit down with it.

  81. February 16, 2009

    TWalk

The blind tastings are great….love the build up and the revealing of the wines

  82. February 16, 2009

Concha y Toro Don Melchor Cab. Was $40 bones, try and find it now for under $75! 94+

Concha y Toro Marquesas chardonnay. Excellent chard for about $15 bones. 91+

  83. February 16, 2009

    ChrisV

Blind tasting format is great. Would like to see a blind tasting of different varietals to see what your chops are like :)

QOTD: Don’t remember… it would have been while I was in the UK probably. Here in Australia there’s not much point in importers bringing in new world wines from the other side of the world when we make our own right here…

  84. February 16, 2009

    Eric R.

Love the blind format. Please do many, many more blind episodes! Love to see a blind Syrah episode.

  85. February 16, 2009

    Doc S

LUDEN’s cherry cough drops, GV. Lindeman’s makes Belgian lambics that just TASTE like cough syrup.

QOTD – nothing memorable. I haven’t sought out Chilean wines since Concha y Toro became the hot brand a few years back.

  86. February 16, 2009

    Joe Zaucha

I recall going to the barrel tastings of the yet to be released wines from Louis Jadot. I would star the wines that I felt were worth the price. I generally ended tjhe day with 4 to 6 stars out of 30 or so wines. I love Burgundy too; but you’ve got to kiss alot of frogs.

QOTD, year in and year out Casa Lapostolle Cuvee Alexandre Merlot is my favorite Chilean wine. And for one of the great wine values from the past; I would buy the Casa Lap. Sauv. Blanc for $6.99.

  87. February 16, 2009

    Little Jonny

Nice show. I was pleased to see you rip a $25+ wine and give it a 50-60!!! F*** preconceived notions!

    QOTD: 2 bro’s Cab Reserva 2005

  88. February 16, 2009

    Terrance

QOTD: Hmm… I don’t dislike Chile but just haven’t had enough to remember anything standout. Will have to remedy that.

Btw, how was the Louis Jadot upon second tasting? Did you get a lemon of a bottle or was Alan Meadows just off this time? Oh, the mystery… ;-)

  89. February 16, 2009

    Doreen

Definitely can’t get enough of the blind tastings.

Only have had one Chilean wine so far. Carmenere–experiment from the grocery store gone bad. Horrid over-oaked swill at eight or nine bucks.

Oddly enough, though, my husband and I started a Chilean Pinot Noir wine kit literally just last night. Dark, dark stuff! I mean, the red wine concentrates always come out of the bag smelling like blueberry pancake syrup you’d get at the IHOP, but I was expecting something just a skosh milder for PN. Not this one!

Hey, when are you and your Lady Wife going to team up on tasting non- or very low-alcohol wines?

  90. February 16, 2009

    AUSSIE SAMMY S

    Great show Gary,

LOVE the blind tasting format – I want to see more….love pinots man, u had a great range of pinots from different countries/terroirs on todays show….such diversity. well done

qotd…best wine from Chile was a 2007 Montes Sauvignon Blanc from my local SAFEWAY Liquor store….$9.99, totally opposite style of wine compared to a NZ SB…very good value highly recommended

  91. February 16, 2009

    SurfCityJay

Another Classic… went out and scored 2 bottles of the Sojourn…

QOTD: don’t remember the winery, but a nice Cab from Chile…

  92. February 16, 2009

    Edog

    Hi Gary,

I love blind tastings, love them !

Was the Louis Jadot that bad? I m so suprised (but biased because I m half French and love Burgundy and immediatly recognised the label.)

I had a glass of Louis Latour pinot (05) which I really liked a couple of month ago (and which my girlfriend “forgot about”, resulting in vinigar which I later blended with olive oil and herbes de provence to make salad dressing, which actually tasted pretty good too. lol)

QOTD: I had a malbec which was OK, but can t remember the producer.

  93. February 16, 2009

    CC_HTown

Love Anderson Valley Pinots. Recently we had the Roco Pinot Noir from Oregon…wow what a beauty.

QOTD: Gary V – I love your blind shows almost more than the college humor episode!

    LUDEN”S cough drops Gary.

Like blind tasting format a lot.

I’m going to Mexico in 8 weeks. Or is it 10? Anyway I am going sorta soon.

    Thanks for another fun show.

Just saw Bottle Shock last weekend. Great movie. I did not know the story.

I went to Sojourn Cellars website (http://www.sojourncellars.com/) and found this:
“The 2007 growing season was a perfect storm (in a good way) for Pinot noir, and these are some of the best wines we have ever put in the bottle. The Spring Pinot noir line-up includes three vineyard designates and one appellation wine. In addition to our flagship Sangiacomo Vineyards Pinot noir, we have added Pinot noirs from Gap’s Crown Vineyard in the Petaluma Gap and the Windsor Oaks Vineyard. Our appellation wine, the 2007 Sonoma Coast Pinot noir is a red fruit explosion and still value-priced at $36.”

    QOTD:?

  97. February 16, 2009

    Paul

Great show as always Gary. I love the blind tastings that you do. I also love the Koolaid man reference at around 17 minutes. “ooooh yeah!”

QOTD: I’ve actually been drinking a lot of wines from South America in the past 2 years. One of my favorite vineyards is Cono Sur. In fact, their Syrah is $7.00 and I would easily pit it against wines two or three times it’s cost. Here is a linky link for those interested: http://www.conosur.com/en/our-wines/vision/syrah/

LOVE the blind tasting format. How about once a week, say, every wednesday or something, doing the weekly blind tasting show?

Also, I agree with the person who wrote before me asking that the wines not be linked up before the reveal at the end.

I really like the blind tasting format. It resulted in some real surprises. I have been a pinot lover for a long time and look for a few reasonably priced ones, which is not an easy task these days. Keep up the good work.

-Why are the wine names coming up as Gary tastes them versus unveils them? That totally ruins the blind factor- previous episodes have revealed them as Gary does, and I hope that method continues for future blind episodes (which I hope you do a lot of!)

-Mott: Great job with the flashback!

-Sorry to see the Big Ass Glass was broken :(

QOTD: Only had a few, but the best so far (at only 7 bones) was the ‘06 Walnut Crest Cab

The name of the cough drops you are referring to are: LUDEN’S.

QOTD: Love the blind-tastings–perhaps my most favorite format. Chilean wine fav is Casa Lapastolle. Haven’t had it in about a decade, but still my most favorite producer until something else comes along.

I am disgusted with the ner do wells that think they are cool being in the top ten postings. Most of them do not even have the brains to post a real comment. All I can say is GET A LIFE LOSERS.
Gary, no need to tell Mott to zoom in / zoom out; I think he’s done this before. Gary, too bad the Jet’s had such a decent record; now you will have to wait at least two years before the Jets have any chance. Who wants to drink Pinot when it costs so much for a weak red/pink wine; I think a decent white would be a much better play with lighter seafood, etc.
    Smell it first. TR

I think the blind tasting is your best format. It really drives home what you say about how wines are price based on the label. It would be really interesting to do it with a guest. QTOD: Don’t have one for you.

Loved the blind pinot tasting. will have to do one with some friends. Of course I was hoping Oregon would come out on top, but it didn’t, and it didn’t come in last. We did a blind (my wife and I) 05 St. innocent (oregon) vs. 05 Rochioli (cali) both pinots. right off Oregon won. after about 5 hrs Cali opened up and was amazing. Glad to see the west coast taking it from the rest of the world.

Awesome job on the blinds…it is nice to see you sweat a little also….

What a fantastic show! I think you should do blind tasting Mondays to bookend your laid back Friday shows each and every week.

Is it possible that you got a bad bottle of that Jadot Burgundy? The metallic taste you mentioned seems rather unusual.

QOTD: I’ve not had a memorable Chilean wine yet, but I’ll be on the lookout for some Pinot Noirs from Chile in the near future.

Good show. I like the blind tasting format, sure.

QOTD: “The Best” depends on every person’s palate but very good wines from Chile I’ve had are: ‘Winemaker’s Lot Syrah’ from Casa Concha, and Carmenére from Casa Silva.

    GV,

What’s up with pairing Pinot and game birds (squab, hen, pigeon)? I had to laugh because I can’t remember thinking of how I’d whip up some squab when I got home. Are you a game bird junkie? I think Pinot would go well with Chicken Stir Fry. Good show though, always entertaining.

Hi Gary! How come you didn´t try the best pinot noir blend in the world. Is the Familia Schroeder Pinot Noir and Malbec and won the “Mondial du Pinot Noir 2008″ in Sierre, Switzerland, here is the link or you can google it: http://www.mondial-du-pinot-noir.com/images/news/1/11122008_pinotnoir.pdf
There was three wines with golden medal: one from France, other from Germany and the argentinean. Anyway, keep in mind for another time. Chears from Argentina!!

    Gary,

The blind tasting is the best format because it eliminates all pre-conceived notions. For example, there are times when you comment very positively about a wine but you don’t score it as high as your comments would seem to justify. I imagine it is because you expected even more from the wine based on its reputation. I am sure it works the other way too. Anyway, the blind format is fantasic, and I agree with the others who ask to eliminate those pop-ups that disclose the wine’s identity. The unveiling at the end would be much more dramatic that way.

As for Chilean wines, I have not been fortunate enough to have experienced any that were worth mentioning – but I will be looking for the 2006 Amayna Pinot Noir. Thanks for all you do.

I bought a bottle of 2005 Chevillon Chezeaux Nuits St Georges les St Julien Burgundy yesterday from Binny’s. It came recommended from their wine “Expert” on site. My price range for this recommendation fell between the 30 to 40 bone range. She came up with that.

To be honest, it was terrible, and tasted like a 9.99 burgundy from Trader Joe’s. Totally dissapointed, and am feeling burned.

QOTD: Best Chilean I’ve had to date? We did a Wine tasting dinner at work with one of our distributors in the chicagoland area. The winery in Chile was Valdavieso. Their “Solera” Caballos Loco or Crazy Horse was magnificent.

    Gary:
A blind tasting is the purest form of wine review. You aren’t influenced by the label design, region, history or reputation of the vineyard. It’s purely your tastebuds telling the story. Please do more blind tastings. I’m transfixed to the monitor when you do, and that’s also when I learn the most about wine….great show….thanks.

Odd episode. It was like watching someone chose a dog from the pound.

Your reference to Sideways, a 2004 movie,… give it a rest. It’s a crutch for you. Could it possibly be that pinot is a more interesting grape than merlot?

The main character, Miles, loves Rieslings. You love Rieslings. Have you been co-opted by what you blithely call ‘Hollywood’? Get a grip, GV. It is you who needs to explore.

Long time watcher, first time commenter. I have just started to get interested in wines after a business trip to Napa. I started by reading books and websites (How I found your website). After a lot of initial confusion, I have found that by picking a few wines (Pinot Noir, Merlot and Malbec) and a few regions – California, Washington State, Oregon and Argentina for the Malbec that I have made a lot more progress. I hope that over time that I will move into Burgundy and Bordeaux wines and expand regions and styles for those wines that I like. Then I can move into exploring other wines.

I really like the blind taste tastings. I especially liked this episode for several reasons. First – the variety of regions that you picked. The wine you chose was one of “my” wines or in general a wine that most people are interested in and the price point again was reasonable and showed the best name and higher price do not buy quality.

My son goes to a stressful high school and when he is finished his homework we often watch one of your shows together and laugh and learn about wine without the snobbery.

Great show. Recently I had a Santa Ema Reserve merlot (can’t recall the year) that turned into raspberry pie a la mode after being vacuum sealed overnight, which was really delicious. I’m focused on $8-$10 bottles, so I’ve found that there are some nice values from Chile.

Wow, thanks! I had one of those moments when I wanted to grab the Queen CD and play “We are the Champions” and crank it up! Seriously, we work sooooo hard to make our artisan Pinot noir and Cabernet Sauvignon wines it’s nice when recognition like this occurs.

We are almost sold out of our 2006 Pinot’s. The good news is that our 2007 Pinot’s (like many other Pinot producers) are crazy good – the weather was perfect at the end of the growing season, and the extended hang-time provided an extra scoop of physiological development.

Gary, keeping on the S. A. bend, I have been drinking loads of wine from Uruguay lately. Specifically, Pisano vinyards, Torrontes, Tannat, and Cabernet Sauvignon. These all roll in at the $10-12 range here in Clearwater, Florida. I would personally love to see an episode devoted to this bodega. I also think an exciting show would include players like Tikal(Jubilo, Patriota), Luca(Chardonnay, Syrah), and Susana Balbao(Cabernet, Malbec, and “Crios” Torrontes) from Argentina, as well as the Concha y Toro/Rothchild joint venture from the Chilean Vina Almaviva. Having been responsible for the wine list at an upscale South American fusion restaurant (The Black Palm), I was able taste these wines consistently for two years. We also prided ourselves on a short and sweet winelist of 87-92+ wines in the “restaurant” $30-75 range. So, I definitely share your appreciation for the Spanish and South American value plays. Great show. Thanks for all you do in the wine world.

I really love these blind tasting shows, and this one shook it up a bit with the Burgundy going DOWN!

QOTD – Best Chilean so far – Terrunyo Sauvignon Blanc by Concha Y Toro, the ‘94 vintage was excellent. For reds Valdivieso’s Reserve Cabernet Francs have been good on the ‘00 and ‘03 vintages as well.

    ….have you missed me? ;)

Gary, love the blind tasting format. Can’t really say a specific Chilean wine I’ve had, but know I’ve had some. Science lesson….copper doesn’t rust it just oxidizes.

Not sure what the best Chilean wine I’ve had is, but for the price (ten bucks) I’ve been pretty happy with the Rothchild Cabernet effort named Brisandes. I sometimes find Cabs a bit difficult, but this one pairs easily and doesn’t kick me in the head with a lot of harsh tannins while still giving me a nice dark chocolate note that I like.

QOTD – VINA CHOCALAN GRAN RESERVA 04. I bought it from WL in Dec 2007. It’s on my ‘wishlist’ – can you bring it in again? I’ll put in an ‘official’ request to see if it can be found.

    Excellent show!

I really enjoy the blind tasting shows. The usual preconceptions go away and the wine stands on its own.

QOTD- My favorite Chilean wine right now is the 2005 Concha y Toro Chardonnay, Marqués de Casa Concha, from Pirques. I love the stuff, it’s my favorite Chard right now.

I always tell customers that Chilean Pinot Noirs are the best PN values on the planet. PN prices elsewhere need to deflate, to accurately represent their worth.

Gary, I love the blind tastings because your comments always seem even more uninhibited than usual. When you blind taste, you seem much more willing to say that a wine sucks or that it rocks your world.

I’d second the earlier commenter who suggested your doing one blind tasting a week.

QOTD: Haven’t had any truly memorable Chilean wines yet. Just a few Carmeneres, which were mostly interesting and good values.

Gary, tremendous episode. Love the blind tasting format, occasionally. Currently enjoying the 2006 Ventisquero Reserva Carménère. Under $10 is a good value. First of this variety that I tried & I love it – very “old world”.

The lucky souls at Sojourn must be steady feelin’ the GEEVEE LOVE right about now.

Since WL is currently sold out of the Sonoma Coast, I signed on directly to the Sojourn site to grab a few very nicely priced bottles of the ‘06–with free shipping!

QOTD – The Best Chilean Wine Experience: Dunno if was the best wine I ever had from Chile, but it was a few bottles of $2.99 Chilean Cab back around 1990 that first got me started on the juice, so that counts for something. I confess — it was Santa Rita, which really wadn’t half bad back then.

Love this format and it was also a great idea to have so many different countries on display. I actually had the Amayna Pinot Noir recommended to me about a year ago by a sommelier at my favourite restaurant… Maze in London. Hi Gary,

Great Podcast (Yes, I’m using my IPod to link-in WLTV)!!!…so I’m always a few days late & don’t leave comment often…But, when I saw the topic of this episode, I did something different and got 3 good value Pinot Noir (Argentine, Chile & Germany) & open the Chilean bottle before viewing your show…Mott, great “flashback” during the revealing of the Chile Pinot Noir!!! Loved it! So I had to log on the website & leave this comment!!!

QOTD: Will expanding my palate lately…2007 Santa Rita “Floresta” Sauvignon Blanc from Leyda Valley!!! Try It, You won’t regreat it!

BTW, I’ve also find the 2005 Osoyoos-Larose in the store (Our Canadian Bordeaux…but $45 CAN bones, used to be around $ 35), so I was doubly grateful to you GV, so I really had no choice but to leave a comment!

QOTD: No doubt the Cantus Carmenere from Maipo Valley (which I believe you reviewed in the candy bar pairing episode). I found that it paired so incredibly well with a washed-rind cheese platter (with numerous fruity and chocolatey accompaniments), and would really recommend it to anyone who wants to begin exploring Chile as a viable wine source (Not to mention it’s affordability!)

  225. February 18, 2009

The blind tasting concept is great. Every show should be blind. Why not include two bottles of the same wine in the mix. See if you rate them differently!!!

An absolutely great show; I loved the flashback to episode 30. I really love burgundy, but I kind of love the fact it flopped – though I did quickly check to see if I had any in my cellar…

QOTD: Not sure what the best wine I’ve had from Chile is – I drink a lot of more lower end priced stuff here in HK, but on of the things I wanted to do this year was to try more better quaility South American wines

Cheers and thanks again for a cracking show.

I love the blind tastings! And you got me all excited with the Anderson Valley guess… my favorite place, heading there this weekend.
I’ve never had a Chilean wine that I liked, I can still clearly remember the taste of a horrific Chilean Chard I had a few years ago (UGH)last thing I ever had from there. I guess it’s time to try some more.

Late to the party this time…Whatever.

When I left fine dining to work for a small distributor, way back in ‘92, our Chilean line was Santa Carolina, and while all the line was more than adequate in quality, value, and were varietally correct, (the market was already flush w/ one tier lower quality) I was taken by both the regular ,and the Reserve of the Sauvignon Blanc! I was just realy receptive to the really bright fruits, AND the Oak and ML style of roundness in the Reserve, which is not where I usually go in SB. That was my eye opener to the possibility of Chilean SB. Chilean PN came along much later.

QotD – MAYBE Le Dix do Los Vascos, but I do love alot of Montes’ work.

I like Marques de Casa Conch, (the production was once EXTREMELY limited, and not even made every year), and it seems that though Don Melchor is beautiful, I’ve had more than one year that just didn’t do it for me. Same w/ a number of other producers’ TOP prestige wines/blends. Oddly, it seems to me that the top performance in Chilean wines ( of the past fifteen years) is somewhate consistently in their upper mid tiers.

The blind tastings are OK but they don’t really tell me as much about the wines as when you taste them non-blinded. I haven’t had a Chilean wine I like. Maybe making bad choices.

I visited Sojourn 2 weeks ago – it is THAT good. They have an awesome little tasting room just feet from Sonoma Square. You gotta check this place out, the tasting is free, just call ahead and get an appointment, and it will be hard for you to leave without grabbing a bottle or 5! Craig Hasserot is a cool guy, very welcoming, not pretentious at all.

Sojourn also makes a few Cabernets – the Homeranch Cab is drinking terrifically and the ‘07 Gap’s Crown deserves the ratings its been getting. Grab some before they go bye bye. These guys are rising stars so get to them before this juice is no longer easily accessible!

Love Sojourn! Great Pinots! You should also try Moshin, Rochioli, Siduri – all from Sonoma/Russian River….

QOTD: My favorite Chilean winery is MONTES! I work at the Danville (CA) Costco as the wine steward, we sell the Montes Alpha Syrah($15) and Cab($16), and just recently sold out of the Montes Sauv Blanc($10). The Sauv Blanc was OUTSTANDING! The Syrah is really, really good too…..
