phrase of the day – ‘Thunder Rack’

Love the fact that Gary is still pushing the boundaries and being inventive. He films this episode in his hotel room (the camera is high quality by the way….watch out Mott) and is as engaging as usual

Loved the show (although the sudden camera movements were making me motion-sick).

QOTD: Don’t have a great story–sorry. Try to stay away from the expense of the mini bar!

    That was classic indeed.
QOTD: During my my honeymoon the mini-bar was nothing exciting, but the gin, vodka, tequila, and rum on tap in the room were pretty fun. Thanks for the show!

Thanks Gary for bringing us around with you!

Hope you have fun in L.A.

My mini bar experience is limited. If I drink winr in a hotel room, I usually bring my own to avoid any deception.

Is it just me or are wine glasses hard to come by in hotel rooms?

  • Awesomeness! Love the creativity on this one.

QOTD: Mini-Bar in Berlin Hotel Steiglitz…no more beer shops were open upon arrival. Late and craving, actually expecting a solid German beer. The one from the Mini-bar (A swartz-beer called Berliner) was delicious. Paid 5x what I later paid at the grocery for the same pils.

Awesome show! Loved the laid back approach, and spitting in the sink, nice touch. Sadly I can’t afford to drink from the mini-bar,I did chill some whiskey in the sink once and make some cocktails though.

Gary, Thunder Rack is a great idea! If you offer them at a NORMAL, or at least reasonable, price that would be killer. I enjoyed the show. Thanks for lookin out. All the best to you and your fam.

QOTD: Strange grapefruit flavored drink in Mexico. It was really bad, but you couldn’t stop drinking it. It was so interesting. Bitter, Sweet, Sour.

  • Nice spin on things with the Hotel show… definitely could have some promise and makes a whole heck of alot of sense to have nicer wines in mini-bar especially in places like LA, NYC, Rome, places you would hope to find something that is above average.

QOTD: Wild Turkey Rare Breed… I was in Nashville, TN traveling cross country to San Diego. I put it there but that is a minor detail.

  • Oh man, cool episode, although there is a lot of camera bump in it (but no bother).

QOTD: YES! I have a special story about mini-bar alcohol, “Pacharán”!(or patxaran as it is known in Basque)

The day I arrived to study in Spain(1990), the second thing I did after settling in my room was hit the minibar and there it was, a strange dark orange liquid in a very peculiar bottle, and I figured, W.T.H. I’ll try it; after two weeks the hotel manager became worried after the fourth bottle mysteriously disappeared from my room and told me they were looking into the cleaning staff for possible robberies, when I inquired as to the missing items or which rooms were being broken into, he told me that only bottles of patxaran were missing from the five rooms in our floor (we were 10 students all with identical rooms and mini-bars), I laughed so hard it took me 10 minutes before I called the front desk and explained we were hooked on the stuff. Needless to say, they stopped refilling the patxaran and we were charged a boat load of Pesetas for the consumed alcohol. One thing they were cool about, they gave us the address of the distillery and told us to buy direct because it would be cheaper. Nice!

Nice impromptu show. I love the dedication!

QOTD: Haven’t ever been able to cough up the dough for the hotel minibar, though you can bet I’ll clean house out on my all-inclusive honeymoon! I did once go to the local wine shop and pick up a couple of respectable values and bring them back to the hotel, where the half of some junk pinot was $24. In your face, Westin!

  • Loved this show! SO fun.

My story really isn’t about a mini bar in a hotel (I can’t afford it!), but I have purchased tiny bottles of wine at a resort store at Disney World…tiny enough not to get wasted, but just enough to get “happy”.

    The brand…no clue.

  • Yes 1/2 bottles of “halfway decent wines” in hotel rooms, good idea–so long as they were reasonably priced (that’s the second part of the equation), I think I might try that.–good idea Otherwise, I stay WAY far away from minibars–might accidently end up paying $20 for water and $30 for a snickers bar!

    Bill–will do.

  • Great episode! Now your bringing the thunder to the real world.

QOTD: Didnt want to lerk on this question, but I never drink out of the mini bar, its a rip off. Its all about hitting the duty free. Then again, I am more of a hostel than a hotel traveler.

Little bottles of Coke served in wine glasses at The American Club in Kohler,Wi. My three sons(2,6,8) and I were hanging out in our luxurious room while Dad golfed. We had on white fluffy robes and decided to hit the mini bar. This had to be at least 9 years ago. I remember it was over Mother’s Day weekend. We all had our pinkies out ala Sponge Bob as this was one fancy place.

Gary, an instant classic, loved it, and hope to see it repeated. Your idea for the Thunder Rack is brilliant, and if I owned a hotel, we’d be talking right now!

One weekend at the Royal Crescent Hotel in Bath (England) I returned to my room in the evening. The room did not have a mini bar but they had lit a fire and put a great bottle of Port on the coffee table ready for drinking… how could I refuse?

I’ve stayed in an awful lot of hotels but rarely find anything inspired in the mini bar. I don’t even look any more, which is why the Thunder Rack is such a winner.

  • Flip cams are awesome.

QOTD: Greatest beverage out of a mini-bar: A can of Foster’s in a small hotel room in France – after a full day of sightseeing and fumbling through trying to speak the language, it tasted amazing.

We can’t be vino all the time – 🙂

  • Glenn P

Hey Gary- I try not to use the mini bar- to much of a money waster for my blood- and its all crap anyway. but welcome to LA, man! I hope you have a great time.
