“I agree. That’s a great analogy. I’m stealing that, and trademarking it, and if you use it again I’m suing you.”

    HILARIOUS.

I’ve never been to Alaska, but can’t wait to visit it’s beauty. Maybe Gov. Palin can give us a personal tour. And we’d be nowhere without cement and concrete!

Great show love the learning aspect of everything!

    VERY interesting,

I really love the idea of printing the preferred drinking schedule seasonally on specific bottles of wine, because some people would love to see that, particularly religious, wiccan, spiritual what have you, and those not interested could ignore it.

It’s also a nice attention to detail, a fun fact, and an interaction of the wine maker with the consumer that is very personal.

    I love the idea, absolutely.

    Plus,
i’ve got a bottle of Dornfelder ready for drinking this weekend.
    I think it’s a great grape.

Fun episode. I like blends. “Scheduled to drink by” could be helpful for some.

QOTD #1 – no, but planning on going in May.
QOTD #2 – It’s hard to dig on cement.

Gary – stop fidgeting with the caps.
Good episode, though I personally think biodynamics is overrated and cult like, but I’m just an amateur here. I do agreee that the sustainability play is the way to go. I recently visited and toured Sokol Blosser in the Willamette valley and have been orgainic since 2005 and their underground cellar is LEED certified. This is the way to grow.

  23. February 26, 2009

I really enjoyed this episode. Thanks for picking their brain about biodynamic farming practices – fascinating! A winery I’d be excited to follow over the next decade or so.

This show just didn’t work for me, but her QOTD, to which my answer is no, I havne’t been, got me thinking.

Nice wrap up. Definitely a show that could have gone on and on with all the fun facts and grower/blending info.

    Great show!

QOTD: Never been to Alaska. What kinda vines grow there? Probably very few. As for cement, not much grows there either.

BRAVO Gary – mighty episode!!!! Blending wine is one of the most important factors in winemaking. It is totally under estimated by the wine consumer. I have done some blending trials both here in OZ and in CA – and yes it is a real eye opener…. Well Done again G

Nice 2-parter! Interesting peeps, and solid QOTD. Would have liked to learn a bit more about desired characteristics when blending, percentages, color, etc. Gary, you mentioned how much 2% here of this and 2% of that can really change the game… I would have liked more of this. Good stuff on biodynamics!

QOTD: Nope, but hope to go in the near future -to do some of what Rebecca did as a child (hunt, fish… especially fish!)

    QOTD: Hate the shit

  33. February 26, 2009

    Murso

Peter and Rebecca – Thanks again, loved the show, you guys are awesome!

I see that Huber Vineyards too, is under Brewer – Clifton management, and that is assurance that your Dornfelder will rock. I was once researching B-C’s work, and saw that they don’t even speak in terms of tons per acre, or hectalitres/ hectare, but in mere pounds (fruit)per plant – like one or two, or one cluster per plant! That’s some gentle nursing, and and I can see her point on ” we, like, dust off each grape…” Go on, give it the barrel treatment.
Ten years ago I tried to offer some Dorn. and Blaufrankisch, and even in our eastern Euro-centric neighborhoods, they didn’t bat an eye, though there were many fans for Harslevelu and other sweet junk. Around four or five years ago, in a copletely different area, and with much better purveyors, we did some Austrian Dorns. and Zweigelt which were much better. It is work like your very own which will truly introduce a generation to the abilities of another relatively unknown grape varietal.

Again, best wishes, and thanks to you, Gary Vee!

Mange tak, og fortsat held og lykke!

I found a bottle of their wine today in San Jose, Ca. A little high at 39 bones at “The Wine Rack”, but I couldn’t resist. So now I’m drinking it while watching you blend it! Not bad for a Pinot, but I’m not much of a Pinot Kinda guy. Give me the big ass oak monster cabs. At least I’m trying new stuff thanks to GV and loved your guests. Heading to Alaska soon I hope.

Peter & Rebecca: Hello and thanks for the sharing! It’s great to meet some nice folk from CA. If both could agree on a really special blend you could name it ‘Petecca’. Now instead of cement, old reclaimed brick is so much nicer in a courtyard or patio, and you don’t even use any cement, just sand. I hope to visit you one day; I live not too far away in Reno, NV. Smell it first. TR

A two-parter about blending with 3 minutes of actual blending??? Please sir, can I have some more? They do have an excellent logo though.

QOTD#1: No, with no plans to go in the near future.
QOTD#2: Where would we be without cement? I’ll tell you, in the sticks my friend, in the sticks.

Great two episodes… my wife and I had already booked a trip to the Santa Ynez/Santa Rita Hills for our anniversary… we go once a year… after yesterday’s episode, I emailed them for an appointment… gonna be there Friday, April 10th at 11am… Any other Vayniacks in the area at that time…? Would love to hook up with ya!

I thought these episodes were great. I would have liked to see more blending, though. I wouldn’t have minded a 3-parter if that’s what it would have taken. Thank you all.

I really enjoyed learning about the blending, but I would have loved to see a second blend or a even a third blend. I’m so curious to see how much difference it would have made if you added 10% of the clone 2A or if you added some of the unoaked 115.

    Qotd: Never.

    Hey Gary

Awesome episode, Im lovin the Biodynamic education. Excited about the question of the day…

QOTD: YES i have been to Alaska. How i got there? That’s the awesome part. My dad and I rode two Sea-Doos (Jet Skis), all the way up the inside passage. We left from Vancouver BC and ended up in Skagway Alaska. The best trip of my life!! 1000 miles on the water by personal watercraft.

  50. February 27, 2009

    Bromidedrag

Another great show Gary! I’ve always wondered about the blending process.

Can I make one suggestion for future… I think it’s time for you guys to invest in mics for the show. I know I’m being picky, but the volume fluctuates so much during a show like this where it’s quite for a while and I have the volume way up. Then Gary will get excited and I practically blow my eardrums. I think mics would even the volume out and would be good for quests too! My two cents.

SurfCityJay – would love to meet up with other Vayniacks on April 10th… perhaps we could get Peter & Rebecca to do another blending of sorts.

QOTD: Never been, but would love to go. Cement… I like asphalt better.

  51. February 27, 2009

    Paul

Very cool episode! It’s interesting to hear all the complexity of the wine making process. I’m a home brewery and for brewing their is so much during the actual creation of beer and very little before. Interesting to see how different wine is.

I think that lipsticks smell very differently from each other. I can’t think what a generic lipstick smell would be.

If I only made wines I love to drink, I guess I’d be making super Tuscans. I don’t want to move to Italy though.

QOTD: Never been to Alaska. I take cement for granted.

GREAT, GREAT Episodes. I would rather have you put out fewer issues but better ones.

I would love to see an episode on Red and white mixes, such as Shiraz/Viognier. Are their any other red/white “blends”?

All the best to you and Mott,

    John

  56. February 27, 2009

    BANKNOTE

Fun Show. I was hoping for more on blending though.

Gary, you should do a show on how the winemaker blends several varietals with each other to create a unique blend.

This is really fascinating to me, it opens up so many more possibilities than varietal wines.

Perhaps thats why I chose to do a red blend for my wine, and I’m so glad I did.

It was interesting to hear more about biodynamic farming. Its a little too “Scientology” for me, but sure is interesting to listen to.

I camped on the way to Whistler at Sqawmish on the beach back in the day, maybe mid 80’s. I’m trying to imagine skidooing the whole inner coast and camping along the way on any beach you like. I’m figuring averaging 200 miles a day, or, are we in a hurry? Maybe I need a boat.

Episode 1 was great, but then in episode 2 they degraded into that mystical, voodoo biodynamics bullsh** that made me turn off the Nicolas Joly episodes. Don’t get me wrong; organic winemaking is great, but when you sink into the sheer stupidity of astrology, homeopathy, etc. that defines biodynamics, you lose me.

QOTD1: Unfortunately, Alaska is the only state I HAVEN’T been too. Hope to remedy that some day.

QOTD2: Cement? Never really thought about it much. It’s been around for a few thousand years. Makes great sidewalks.

Really nice guests, very interesting and fun show. Recently some friends from Palmer, Alaska sent me two bottles of half blueberry, half grape wine. One was a merlot blend and one was a white zin blend. Both were very floral and incredibly fun to drink! They came from the Bear Creek Winery in Homer, Alaska..wonderful expansion on my pallate:)

Great episode. Keep up this sort of educational stuff!

Alaska is beautiful but too cold in the winter for humans to live in. I would like to visit in the summertime.

Cement has had an amazing impact on human culture making possible building forms which were never considered when all we had was stones and wood. I bet someone has already written a book on the impact of cement in human culture.

Waited to post until the end of the second episode. Very interesting guests and I have had their wines I bought from Wine Library on my trip there last summer and they were wonderful and 3 bottles of Rogue still to drink. I have been to Alaska twice and I have to say the country is beautiful but the cities suck big time. They look like some kind of industrial construction project in the worst Soviet sense plopped down in beautiful country. Talk about cement.

QOTD: Never been to Alaska, but I’m a big fan of cement. Its ability to stabilize load bearing structures is unmatched.

    Great Ep!

Another good show GV. I really liked the blending aspect because I have not been involved in this part of the wine world yet (drank plenty of blends, just not watched them happen).

QOTD – Never been to Alaska, but I really want to. I thought that she said she went to LA to find “some men”. I think very little about cement.

QOTD- Yes, it one of the most beautiful places in the world. It’s nature at it’s best.

Thank you for a great show, your guess today are awesome. I think the Santa Rita Hills area is one of the best places for pinot noir. The wine, the people are all down to earth. I have had the pleasure to visit the area and it was one of the best places to go.

Thanks again for a great show.

QOTD: No I have not been…and I think cement is a useful tool.

Very interesting and educational episode. I really enjoyed “learning” about an aspect of the wine industry. I would like to see more episodes of this style. Maybe you could take one day a week or every couple of weeks to explain part of the wine world other than the tasting and retail end. Thanks for all you do.

As a sidebar, I have to comment on how good the Jet D is going to be this year. Sheppard and Bart Scott are huge additions and if they get Leonhard its all over. QOTD – Never been to Alaska but cement is great.

I never been to Alaska and i don’t like cement. Sounds like a good title for a book or a Johnny Cash tune.

QOTD: Never been to Alaska but really want to go fly fishing for salmon there. Cement is pretty good but CONCRETE is strong to quite strong.

QOTD: NO I have not been to Alaska, but I live in LA… and there is TOO MUCH CEMENT TO BE FOND OF IT!!!

QOTD: Haven’t been to Alaska yet, but grew up in LA – way too much cement for my liking.

QOTD: Yes, went to Alaska for a cruise. That state is awesome. Did a little flyfishing during the salmon run — one of my favorite memories.

A fascinating show that definately shows the ‘real’/'human’ nature of the US wine industry (something that isn’t always conveyed on an international level).

QOTD: no, but would absolutely love to

    Cheers

Cool show concept, but I would have loved it if it was a bit more informative on the blending process and the reasoning behind certain decisions.

If this show was a wine here’s how I would review it:

83 – Hinting at good components but lacking focus. A little drawn out in the mid. I like where it was going but needs some concentration. After experiencing it, it’s gone (short finish).

QOTD: Never been to Alaska, but with (gasp – should I mention it?) ‘Global Warming’ it could be the world’s next great wine growing region!

QOTD2: which varietal creates that flavor??? =)

Unfortunately Skagway is my only Alaska experience, tourist city, but I know it to be a great state.

Very interesting show! I have to say that Gary V was coming on a little strong and stepping on the answers of the guests a bit too often for me. That said, again, still very interesting!

QOTD: No, and cement is great.

thanks for all the great comments — Peter and I had a great time on the show and if you are ever in our neighborhood please stop by for a visit.

One person asked if we have a distributor in Texas. No we don’t but we are actively looking for one and would love any help or suggestions.

…. the show seemed to get a little bogged down in the middle, but pulled it round at the end and finished on a high. Best 2 parter for some time.

QOTD – Nope, nowhere near. I’d like to say maybe one day, but I have my doubts.

Great guests on the show, Gary. Very passionate and knowledgeable. QOTD1: Have not been to, but would love to some day. QOTD2: Cement is a force we know little about, and once we fully grasp what cement is up to it will be too late. No no, I dont like cement at all!

Gary, you got somewhat annoying in the middle of the show – it wasn’t supposed to be about you, it was about your guests. But overall, the two part show was very good and very interesting.

QOTD: I have never been to Alaska, but my wife went there many years ago before I knew her. I’d like to go there some day, though.
