QOTD1: I’ve heard Pomeral wines described as containing a hint of “iron filth” and I’ve always been intrigued to find out just what the hell that’s supposed to mean. One day when I get a bit more cash, I intend to find out :)

QOTD2: I think that Adam will take it – that guy is the only reason that I’m keeping my eye on the show (- absolutely sick cover of Tears for Fears “Mad World” if anybody hasn’t seen it.)

I have had a few pomerols that were just ok, but most have absolutely blown me away! American Idol…. that’s still on?

Good show, the only things I know of Pomerol is R bank, merlot, and Petrus.

Nice fun little show. You need to do a little tour. Show the Vayniacs your “cellar.” Show us what you have stashed away for 2010 and beyond…..

QOTD1: I need to learn more about the area, but I respect that they dont have a class system. Never tried a wine from Pomerol but Id love to own Bordeauxs from all regions to taste the differences.

QOTD2: Dont care for American Idol. Do some of them have the ability to sing? Sure. Do they sing anything meaningful? ehhhh. Id rather listen to Steely Dan, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, etc. No manf. music for me.

GV-love you, your passion and pod cast. It makes my commute from Sactown to Oakland bearable plus educational. I have tried my first white burgundy on your recommendation and got SCHOOLED at BevMo. I asked for the white burgundy and was taken to the red section (clue one, I was sooo outta my league) and the clerk points to a wine and I say, “what…behind the chardonnay” she politely clarifies that I wanted a white burgundy, right? …and edjumacates me that is a french chardonnay. She went on to say french chardonnays are tottttalllly different than buttery/sweet CA chardonnays. Dooohhhh, but drinking it right now and like it. I’m just opening up to the possibility of white wine and never liked CA chardonnay’s. Thanks for pushing me to try new things…and given I married a New Jersey Man…I’m of course partial to you.

    QOTD-Kris of course

We just had a bottle of 83 Petit Village at the weekend (with Entrecote) and we loved it!! (95 points) – This wine simply needs time until you can really enjoy it. So keep the rest of your bottles, try again in 2027 and let’s hope we’re both still alive!
    Best wishes

I found a couple good wine guides on Free Book Quest, but their legality might be in question. Does anyone know a good guide for someone just getting into wines?

    Hey Gary,

    nice show again!

Question 1: Pomerol is stunning! Just had a huge tasting of Lafleur with couple Sommeliers and Wine writers. Huge Vintages like 90, 95 and 01, but as well some lower rated, but perfect wines from the years like 99 and 98. Have a taste on 07. It’s pretty traditional and very elegant and of course still in oak – was a cask sample.
Aside of Lafleur I’m not sure if the price difference from the tops like Le Pin and Petrus to the rather unknown producers isn’t far too large? I’m having much more fun in enjoying high-quality wines from not overrated producers. But it’s nice to see how good a quality Merlot-based blend can mature and bring so much deepness to the wine…

Question 2: Have no idea, cause I’m in Germany… Plus I probarbly wouldn’t care.

    Have a nice day!
Greetings from Germany – The most passionate Riesling-producing-Country!!

I’d love to see a wine pairing for chili (the State Food of Texas).

If you like the Austin music scene, you should check out Denton, TX. Some great things are shaking in north Texas.

There’s nothing like a soft, plumy Merlot based wine. Pomerol is a good place to find it with plenty of affordable sellers there.
Thanks for opening some maturing wines.

QOTD1: I have actually never had a Pomerol. Will have to try one someday.
QOTD2: Don’t watch, but from what friends say, Adam Lambert sounds like the one to best.

Btw- Very belated congrats to Gary & Lizzy on their baby news!

Interesting show, loved seeing some of the bottles you would have picked to lay down in your own home collection, love the Gazin, great bottle have had the 03 and I completely get the white fruits (went back my tasting notes, I had poached pears listed in addition to the sour cherry, thats just funny. tasted 11/08) but I would think the Petit Village would open up with a little more time, but you may have popped between bottle evolutions (i.e. wait another 2 yrs)but I have never had it so i cant say for sure

QOTD 1 Pomerol, oh, Pomerol how expensive can thou be?
but seriously some of the most well rounded Bordeaux one can get for the money. French Merlot is such a different animal then Cali Merlot, and i mean literally contributing a nice gamey element and those structured dark fruits not found in domestic merlot. While the “blending” allows more backbone and secondary flavors and aromas to push through, but yet there is something more than primary verital that sets the right bank apart from what is tradionally thought of as “Bordeaux” and thats where the love affair begins

    QOTD 2 Really?

  22. March 17, 2009

Another show you should do is a video tour of your “wine cave.” I’d love to see what your most prized possessions are.

QOTD: My first thought of Pommerol is usually the large amount of counterfeit Petrus bottles that have found their way on wine lists. Other than that, never tried one, though I am cellaring a 2000 Chateau Le Caillou. Any thoughts of when to drink?

OQOTD: Sorry, not an Idol fan

  23. March 16, 2009

    A dumb Rhine king

    QOTD1: No thoughts
QOTD2: American what? I’ll go with the Adam dude that I read someone else vote for.

Good episode and you continue to mix things up a bit, cannot wait for the BBQ episode.

QOTD – Have had one Pomerol 2000 Chateau De Viaud that started very barnyard funky but opened very nicely to have dark fruit.

American Idol ? – Who cares.

Great idea for a show, would have been cool to expand it and flash to earlier of you going into the cellar and choosing the bottle (maybe even a why) .

Have not had pomerol yet but will be trying soon.

    QOTD: Danny-
