Pomerol: Thought I had had a Gazin (1972, spoiled, the worst smelling spoiled) wine I’ve encounted, but that was a Gazin from C de Bourg, the few I’ve had (low end) were ok. Have two ‘81 waiting for later this year though. . . .

Why have we never seen a picture of Gary’s wife? Who is this mystery woman?

That aside, I loved the Mezcal episode, the guest was very intriguing, intelligent, and adventurous, he obviously wanted to get Gary to be a
part of the process, and I felt Gary wussed out.

Never understood the whole “We can’t drink Merlot any more” thing that crept out from Sideways. Hvaen’t had Pomerol that I can recall, but I really like St Emilion so I imagine I would like Pomerol.

In an upset, I like the red head high school chick, Allison???

I’ve had Gazin a few times over the decades, but not recently. WHile I like Pomerols, they are generally too expensive for me.

Gary! You don’t LIVE here in Jersey? WTF? That seems so wrong!

QOTD #1: LOOOOOOOOVE Pomerol… was able to get a tasting at Ch. LaPointe, my favorite, in 2001… one day would love to be able to afford a Petrus….

QOTD #2: Don’t watch AI, so no answer…

QOTD: I’m over French wine. Too many rules. The wine world is so huge and there are so many innovative regions producing wine right now, and for good values, that I prefer to concentrate my efforts elsewhere. But I like learning, so good show!

QOTD#1 I enjoyed the pomerol I have had.

QOTD#2 I think Danny Gokey is going to win (good vocals and the likable personality) although maybe Adam Lambert the rocker guy though he has sick 80’s hard rock vocals. Check back in two weeks.

QOTD #1: I have never had Pomerol. Going to put it on the list.
QOTD #2: I haven’t watched Idol since Sanjaya was robbed.

Pretty Cool that you did the show from the GV secret lair. I also like that change up with the short episode. We have been getting a lot of longer episodes. It felt like a little bit of info overload. Excited to see what is going to be on the facebook page.

Would love to try a Pomerol. Some day soon. I just had the Silverado Merlot that you recomended in the past, and it was very good. The label had changed so it musta been a later year. It rocked the hizzy with a “Black Jack” steak. Link it up!
I don’t care to watch Idol but was forced to the other night. I’ll pick the cute little girl in the pink dress.

Haven’t had a Pomerol in a while. The ‘98 Lafleur Petrus and the LaGrave a Pomerol both rocked bigtime.

Awesome episode. It just goes to show that you’re great even when it’s just you and a simple camera. I watched episode #621 yesterday (http://tv.winelibrary.com/2009/02/10/a-young-burgundy-tasting-episode-621/) after not having checked in for a while and I was once again reminded that you’re the best source of *interesting* and reliable wine education I’ve found.

    Keep it up!

Good show Gary, thanks for pulling stuff from your own cellar… but where is the Le Pin? :-p

QOTD: Been to Pomerol once, not the prettiest Bordeaux area, but very unassuming considering its reputation. I guess it’s the Burgundy of Bordeaux in terms of small vineyards and mega-expensive wines. Not tasted many, but a good one that’s not too pricey is Chateau Beauregard. Here in the UK you can get the 2004 for around £28 (about $40).

    I’ve never seen American Idol.

  46. March 12, 2009

    Salvatore

The only bottle of Pomerol we have; is still sitting in the cellar.

Trying to decide when to drink it. Never had one.

Four Birthdays in our family next month; that sounds like a good reason to try it.

Did another blind tasting last Sunday @ our grandson’s birthday party.
Did 5 < $15 a bottle; French reds. Really tuff to give them a score.
But it was fun…..it is very tough to do though.

  47. March 12, 2009

Question1 have not yet tried it.

    Question2 Danny for sure.

Bringin’ it home Gary! Thank you for having us, the vaniacs, over.

My experience with Pomerol is limited, but in my recent tastings, I’ve enjoyed a 2004, Jean Pierre Mouiex which stood out. Big wine, big bucks, but worthy of the prestige.

QOTD: I haven’t really had enough Pomerol to have any real opinion about, though, these days Bordeaux (rouge) is actually about one of the last places I’m interested in spending my tiny wine budget. That might change someday.

And I have never watched American Idol.

    Thanks Gary

    OK show.

QOTD 1: Pomerol? It’s strange that despite a huge love of Cabernet I tend to avoid Boudreaux. Not really sure why. Maybe it’s because it’s long term wine sealed with unreliable corks. Maybe because I think it’s grossly over priced in Hong Kong. Maybe because I think it’s often over-rated (from a bloke who hasn’t drunk first growth. So sorry no favourite.

QOTD 2: What … who knows … sho cares?

    Cheers

I dug the ep. I always like it when there’s a flop wine in the lineup. Hmm, thought you’d be balling with a larger LCD TV.

    QOTD: American what?

  57. March 12, 2009

QOTD Uno – Only had a few but loved them. If I remember correctly they came with a higher price point which might have put me off from further pours.

    Hey Gary,

Great show. I’m glad to see some Pomerols. I asked you the other day “what do you drink at home?” I wonder if this is an answer to my question! (coincidence I’m sure) I love Pomerols. La Conseillante is high on my list. As for the QOTD— Sorry , I don’t watch American Idol.

  61. March 12, 2009

    HeyClyde

Always giving us the curveball….excellent! Good show

    1. I lost my virginity to Pomerol today. This meaning it’s my first time hearing about it. Always excited to try new wines!

    2. My guess is Matt Giraud. The man and the piano always wins.

  62. March 12, 2009

    Rick D

QOTD 1: never had a Pomerol, the closest I have come is a Chateau Soutard St. Emillion its’ next door neighbor. It rocked the house.

QOTD 2: From the little I’ve seen it has to be Adam Lambert.

  63. March 12, 2009

QOTD1: I drink bordeaux wine but I don’t think about it as much as other regions. I’m more Burgundian.

QOTD2: Danny Gokey, Lil Rounds, or Adam Theatrical Guy. I’m a Danny Gokey fan.

  64. March 12, 2009

QOTD: Pomerol is a personal favorite – I’m a huge fan. I had no idea they didn’t have classifications! I wish I could drink more – I’m often off in the ditch drinking Fronsac, and other less-posh appellations for affordability. Plus, they make good wine too, let’s be honest.

Winner of American Idol? No clue. Not a big TV guy.

  66. March 12, 2009

    E dog

    Hi Gary,

I love the way you improvise !

QOTD1: Thoughts on Pomerol: I love right bank Bordeaux in general. Typically I think you get better value for money, and I ve always enjoyed Merlot. (also, you can drink the Merlot based wines earlier than the Cabs)

QOTD2: I haven t got a clue who will wim Americain Idol

  67. March 12, 2009

    Jason Harris

#1 – Never had it, and honestly probably too many others to try higher on the list that I’ll ever get there…

#2 – Adam Lambert (sp?) only because of the 13-year old girls.

  68. March 12, 2009

    Mr Beast

qotd1 – to new to have any opinion about Pomerol
qotd2 – Top 4 – Danny, Alexis, Matt or Adam – I pick Matt – I have to go with Michigan

It was good to see you mellowed out at home for a change; very relaxing, and the beautiful flowers in the background was a nice touch. At first I thought we might catch a rare glimpse of Lizzie; is she camera shy?

    Great episode Gary.

QOTD 1 Chateau La Clemence made me a believer. Otherwise, somewhat limited.

QOTD 2 Got to go with Adam Lambert. He’s strange, but what a voice. Will go with Allison & Danny as two and three.

#1 – I haven’t had many Pomerol’s. I do like the 01/03/05 Segla and I have had some Lalande de Pomerols that have been really good values for the price point.

#2 – Gokey will take it all.

Ivan Putski? The Polish Hammer! That name brings back some memories, WOW. Thanks for saying “dessert wine” again during the episode, because that’s what they’re for in my book…DESSERT. Hope you enjoy the BBQ, and I have a suggestion for a show, “What wines go with peanuts?”

QOTD: Pomerol is for ballers, I’m more like an Arnold Pomerol, “iced tea, lemonade and grape juice.”

Danny G. will be the next American Idol.

“I AM NOT DRINKING ANY F_____G MERLOT!”

Pomerol or otherwise, now that I’ve had a few from various parts of the world, I see what Paul Giamatti meant!

Like it’s white counterpart, Chardonnay, I think Merlot is the “un-red” wine, a neutral, low-acid base for oak flavoring, offering at best(by itself)a one-dimensional flavor profile of unfocused dark, plum-like fruit and chocolate. And they all taste the same! The few palatable examples I’ve had, including Pomerol, owe their worth(if they haven’t been bludgeoned by new oak) to the Cab Sauv/Franc added for strength and flavor. The Merlot part is pure poseur!

QOTD: You’re my American Idol, Gary!

  81. March 12, 2009

    catherine.

i can always tell if you like a wine based on the faces you make when you taste it.

QOTD: i dont really know anything about Pomerol. and i’m not watching American Idol either.

  82. March 12, 2009

    ScottEJ

G, Thanks for letting us in to your home. I would love to repay the gesture some day. Sad to see that ‘01 go down in flames. Wine…what a finicky passion she is.

QOTD 1: I’ve had only a few Pomerols, those being the ‘05 Gazin and Clinet and both were very solid. I prefer merlot based wines (F Hollywood) as they seem to be more elegant, silky, and require less time to blossom. Sadly, because the area is so small, there’s less available bargains.

QOTD 2: The dark haired actor/rocker to win (Whom I picked immediately upon seeing his audition) and the glasses dude, Danny, placing 2nd. The Judges will use the power of veto on either one of these cats should one go down early. From a talent stanpoint, I think it’s pretty clear who has this thing…the rest of the shows are just marketing and advertising time.

  83. March 12, 2009

    Karl B

    Hi Gary,

Pomerol has the reputation over St. Emilion, but I am not a right bank guy (probably because I am such a Cabernet Sauvignon fan compared to a Merlot fan).

Don’t have a clue on the Idol winner.

Just got back from an extended weekend trip with my wife Grace for our 25th anniversary, and preparing for the Thunder Cruise where we will be celebrating her 50th Birthday!!!! How about a “shout out”? I’ll look for you on the cruise to taste a glass together with my 50 year young wife.

    All the best,
    Karl B.

  84. March 12, 2009

just wondering gary, u know how u’re always excited when a bordeaux has like 5% cab franc as part of its composition, do many producers actually produce a 100% or predominantly cab franc wine or is that heresy? cheers from melbourne, australia.

  85. March 12, 2009

    Derrick

Pomerol – heavy soils and moderate rain and moderate temperatures make excellent merlot based wines….I think Lil Rounds is gonna win yo’

  86. March 12, 2009

    Leo Brancazio

Danny Gokey. I have never had a Pomerol.

  87. March 12, 2009

    Mad Hatter

QOTD 1: I’ve never had a Pomerol, but I’ll definitely have to try one in the future.

QOTD 2: I would say Danny Gokey.

  88. March 12, 2009

    chadd

awesome show gary..I am a big big big bordeaux fan but pomerol is not one of my favs…Please try the 2005 rauzan segla i know its pricey but what a great wine it is..It is drinking really well now but will be even better in a few years..But I am still going to keep requesting you do a show on a patrick javillier and his white burgundys..especially the 2006 patrick javillier bourgogne blanc cuvee forgets, for 23 bones its a steal and affordable for many here..

QODA: beats me that show was good for a year or 2 but its getting old unlike the thunder show!!

  89. March 12, 2009

    gomestar

Pomerol – the handful I’ve had have been excellent, but they’re certainly not sub-$20 winners, usually you have to fork over $40 for a really solid effort. With the money, however, Pomerol or St. Emillion are usually on my priority list.

And American Idol – No Gary V singing, so who cares.

  90. March 12, 2009

    Pete B

Hey Gary, it’s nice to have a chill day at home and avoid the office every once in awhile.

QOTD 1 – I have only had one wine from Pomerol but it happens to be one of my favorite wines so I’m a little biased. The wine was 2000 La Petite Eglise and it blew me away.

QOTD 2 – Not every guy would admit to watching Idol but I think it’s pretty addictive. From what I’ve seen so far, I think Adam is the favorite.

  91. March 12, 2009

    Murso

    Qotd – Pomerol? “C’est Magnifique!!”

Though I’ve historically espoused Cabernet Franc and it’s wines (St. Emilion, et al) as my ‘pet grape’ much for the earthy spiciness they offer, i love the forward approachability of Pomerol’s Merlot (and it’s Merlot- centered blending).

I did have the good fortune to have tasted Petrus several times, and I’m sorry to say, it didn’t make the grade, at least in our overpriced, Control State (Oh.)

  92. March 12, 2009

    Candace

Can’t wait to watch. Pomerol is my absolute fav….definitely a right bank gal:)

QotD: I think I’ve had one pomerol. It was good, not great. I’m open to trying more. I think the family-man/oil worker dude has a great story and good presence. Not really my style, but I think he’s the guy to beat.

i am rather disappointed in your television. i thot you would have 100 inch projectors with speakers that look like honeycombs and whatnot…..

    WATTUP GARY!

Man I’m LOVING the show! I have watched like 30 episodes in the past week. Ive got to tell you im a newbe when it comes to wine and watching you gets me pumped! Ive been homebrewing for a couple of years and my passion for wine is catching up to my passion for beer, or im an alocoholic whatev.

You ever think about bringing a Brew Master on the show? You have a lot of great breweries over there.(In Texas too beer and BBQ classic)hint haha. Expand the palate Man! you said it not me.

QOTD No Pomerols yet. Sorry I cant watch American Idol dude, Jack Bauer would shoot me in the face for changing the channel.

    Have fun in Texas dude!

@Vinay: I just caught Wednesday’s Late Night and also saw Gary V. hanging out in the green room with the DiggNation guys. I came straight here to see if anybody else had commented on it. Too funny…

    Hey Gary,

Im a big fan. relatively young (25), and have been watching your show for about a year now. Ive bought a bunch of your suggestions, and have been indoctrinated over the past few years in wine by my cousins, who you know (bj and josh reisberg). I want to get more into the tecnicalities of wine and had a question for you. Im looking for a good book or text book on viticulture and enology. I want to get more into the science behind the whole wine process, beyond the basics i already know, (i am an engineer by training, although am in law school now, and technical doesnt scare me.). a book or two that you could recomend would be great; there are too many on amazon and i dont really know what would be good to start wtih, i know the basics but really want to delve in, in my spare time. Thanks in advance, and keep doing what you do!

Love it when you shoot in different locations, gives your show a great “down to earth” feel. Short and to the point as well, I like the 12 to 15 minute episodes.

QOTD 1 – Pomerol is not on my radar at the moment, but I’ll have to keep an eye out for.

    Gary,
I was just watching the “Daily Show” and Jon Stewart was an a**hole to Jim Cramer. He didn’t allow Jim a chance to speak and I can’t find a way to connect with Jim personally. I want him to know that not everyone is falling for the Daily Show’s bullSh*t. Jim Cramer tried his best to tell the truth with the information he had at hand. It’s like trying to forecast how good a wine will be by talking with the winegrower, owner, or Robert Parker. We all know how that works.

Why am I posting this here? Mr. Cramer was on this show once (awesome episode!), you are a man who does amazing things for his audience, and you might have a way to contact Jim Cramer.
Please forward this to Jim Cramer.

It’s too bad the Petit Villge didn’t show better. I went there and visited during harvest last year and got to see the cellar. Wow, is that place amazing! And beautiful location. If you ever have a chance to visit, do so! There’s an American who works there- super nice. I got to taste the 2002 and the 2004, and the ‘04 had some beautiful mushroom notes on the nose. Really good wine.

QOTD: Yeah, I love love love Pomerol! Having been there and being able to meet many of the people in the business, it was absolutely fabulous and has a special place in my heart. And GV’s right- they’re super chill in Pomerol. Even during the harvest everyone I met there was not stressed and welcomed us in to see their cellars. Cool place.

Q1: Pomerol is good stuff. Although, there are a lot better QPR plays in Bordeaux. Had an ‘89 (can’t remember the producer right now) last summer that was stunningly good. Still so alive. I have to say though that the French wine geek in me kind of wishes that it DID have a classification system! Viva La Merlot!

Gary, the variety in the shows is great. This short one was cool. I’ve had some Pomerol at dinner parties thrown by well-heeled friends, even some Chateau Gizan–’99, I think–and it was good. But for Merlot-focused Bourdeaux that I can afford, Côtes de Bourg wines like Roc de Cambes work best. I once found ‘00 Chateau Tayac for 9 bones! You might do a show on Bourg and Blaye bargains for us poor folk.

  118. March 13, 2009

    Brian Walch

Too long since I commented… I love Pomerol, mainly because most of the wines I’ve seen from there are out of my price range. So, every time I’m out of state (I live in Alaska for God’s sake) I ask the wine shop what Pomerol’s and Cote Rotie’s they have… my quest. Thanks for this episode.

    Gary,
Great show from the home front. I love episodes like this, as it makes me feel like Gary V is just like any other person. Sometimes with all the tv appearances it may appear as if you’ve reached a sort of celebrity status, but having met you in person and seeing a couple of excellent everyday kind of episodes, it really re-enforces why I feel like I can connect with you.

QOTD 1: Not too familiar with Pomerol, but we did splurge and have one while visiting the wife’s family over Xmas and it was very delicious.

QOTD 2: Honestly, I only catch American Idol when I’m not working and my wife is watching it. She loves it and when she heard your question of the day, replied “See, even Gary likes American Idol.” I think she realized that in some way I envy you and if you like American Idol, maybe I should too :-)

    Hey Gary!
Long time Lurker first time poster. Gotta say I agree about Merlot based wines getting a bad rap since Sideways. Have always enjoyed them but never tried anything from Pomerol. I will be looking it soon though! As far as Idol goes close call but I have to go with Adam Lambert.

You’re dedication to the Vayner Nation is unquestionable. a modified QOTD (Quote of The Day) “And I don’t mean fun guy (point at yourself) I mean fungi” classic.

QOTD (For real): Pomerol is definitely a region where I would like to try more wine from… problem is that you have to pay to play and not saying that there aren’t Awesome values from there, I just don’t have the coin to do so yet (one day).

    Gary,

Great show. I love when you toss together something improv for your views. They always seems so personal and are a lot of fun.

I had very few wines from pomerol. The price and availability is a factor.
I was surprised by your comments on the Gazin, It didn’t have the veggie
or the earth flavors you usually find in this area. Alot of fruit, is it
because the type of grape (merlot)?

I have not watched american idol since the first season. The way they packaged the program puts me off.

  127. March 13, 2009

    John D.

Thanks for the great episode Gary. Folks, this man is dedication personified. WLTV from his home?! Vayner nation: “We’re not worthy. We’re not worthy.”

QOTD #1: I really enjoyed the few Pomerols I’ve tasted. I’m always surprised how different (nice & balanced) the merlot tastes in Bordeaux vs. some in CA. I’ve taken the plunge with them and have a few bottles of Le Gay, La Clemence, Clinet and Clos l’Eglise. I like the fact that they’ve never formally ranked the chateau. A bit of giving the man the finger I think!

    QOTD #2: Never watched Idol.

Bonus input: I took a gander at Parker’s Vintage Chart (as of 1/19/09). You were right on, he has the 01 Pomerol as a 90E and the 03 Pomerol as an 84E. Which made your tasting notes even more interesting. Like you remind us, “Taste the goddamn wine!”

Thanks for having us to your place Gary,

QOTD 1: Hard to find decently priced pomerol up here in Cowtown (Calgary), can’t remember the last time I had one.

QOTD 2: I don’t know about American Idol, but my early bet for DWTS is Gilles Marini

Hope you keep us posted on SXSW

Great episode G.V. and glad that we are back to the vino…though appreciate that a little respite away from the scene was probably needed.

I do love the Pomerol appellation, though as the store I work in usually carries the high premium Pom´s I do not get to taste quite as many as I would like.
Appreciate the review on the 03 Gazin..was thinking of buying some before flying back to England…..PS WHEN ARE YOU COMING TO THE UK TO SEE ALL US HARDCARE UK VAYNIACS!?!?!!?!??

QOTD: Now we know what that big arse TV is for in your apartment…..CAUGHT MY FRIEND!

I with ya GV. The Pomerol region is my kinda style. Not exploited and an old world classic. Its like the small business man that produces one of a kind produces (specialized), and the quantity is limited.

Gary, BIG UPS for getting a show out there. I am watching this right before going to work on a beautiful day in Northern France (aka, overcast and rainy).

“Attacked by Cranberry” Sounds like a 50’s horror movie!

What happened to the ‘Whether they like it or not” piece? Two days in a row Gary. It’s like The Terminator saying Hasta Lavista w/o saying ‘Baby’.

Brother, you work so hard to teach us about great wines. Go ahead and take a little vacation. On me. And the rest of the Vayniaks.

QOTD1: I am swinging through Pomerol on my Bordeaux wine trip (August?), so I’ll get back to you. Try to get some sleep while waiting for my assessment.

QOTD2: I don’t get American Idol out here in Lille. So, I will list my favorite American Idol of all time, William Hung (that’s what she said).

  133. March 13, 2009

    mikek

Really GV!??…realllyyy???…Idol!?…you just PLUMMETTED off the respect scale! IDOL??? WTF!?! LMAO!! I’ll watch old eps of WLTV before I’d tune in for 1 “NEW” ep of this dreck!…talk about jumping the shark…this is jumping …the ocean!LOL!
Poms are too pricey for my wallet, love the Rhone & Bordeaux (surprisingly has some value plays)! Languedoc is wher I’m “venturing” now. Thanks for sharing, just the same!

QOTD#1 Pomerol is a category that I have not had a lot of..i dont seem to see to many that are in my price range like all the Cotes de Castillon,Cotes de Francs, and Fronsacs that I drink…but I would love to have more of them! Thanks for the show, have a great week!

  138. March 13, 2009

    Great Show!!!

QOTD: Pomerol is by far my favorite area in Bordeaux. Extremely elegant wines that deserve a lot of respect. Chat. La Fleur de Gay, L’Evangile, Clos L’Eglise, and Certan De May are some of my favorite producers. Would kill to try a Petrus or Le Pin…..maybe one day.

Great to get a peak into the ol’ Vaynerpartment! First WLTV ep. from the apartment? Maybe there was one other episode that showed the Manhattan pad, but I don’t think so.

QOTD 1) I’m all about Pomerol and there are obviously fantastic producers and wines consistently coming out of there… but you have got to pay for it. For my money Lalonde de Pomerol provides some great values if you look around to find a solid producer in better vintages.

QOTD 2) I’d love to give a prediction, but I’ve got to be true to myself (as you always advise) — I really don’t watch that show. For me the ONLY reality show that’s worth watching, and that I am ADDICTED TO is TOP CHEF (although the season just ended). Cheers.

I did find both these wines on http://www.everywine.co.uk
Roughly £40 a piece, $50-60 USD Ouch. A bit pricey when you

    Gary,

I went Pomerol last summer, and it is a maze! We were trying to find Petit Village, and it took 2 hours. We even drove into some of the wines for a short cut. Not a good idea.

QOTD – Pomerol is cool, but sometimes I think it’s a little overpriced for what it offers. When we went to Petit Village, we had a vertical tasting of the wines, and given a tour – they have just modernised the entire place – it looks amazing – I think it will be one of the wines to watch in the coming years. THUNDER! FLIP MY FACE OFF!

The blind guy will win American Idol!

QOTD 2: American Idol? Are you kidding me? Pazz with 17 Zs. How could I possibly find time to watch that crap while I am busy *crushing* it?!?

Why no tour of your apartment?

  145. March 13, 2009

    Heka

Great episode. It’s always fun to see you tasting vintages.

QOTD 1: I bought a 05 Pomerol as a christmas present for my parents and I’m hoping it will be good after some years of cellaring. It will be the first Pomerol I and my parents taste.

QOTD 2: I have no idea because I live in Finland. But judging from the other comments it will be Adam Lambert.

  146. March 13, 2009

Great episode Gary. Even had a little stalkerish component to it because we got to see your apartment AND something out of your own collection.

QOTD1: I love Pomerol. Mostly because a Pomerol was the first Bordeaux I tasted consciously.

QOTD2: I could tell you who is about to win “Deutschland sucht den Superstar” aka German Idol…but seriously, I hope it’s gonna be Lil’ Rounds.

    Cheers from Dusseldorf, Germany.

Great show Gary!!! I have a question for you…at what temperature do you set your wine cooler? I’ve always wondered what’s “proper”. You may have answered this in another show, but I thought I’d give it a shot.

#1 QOTD: Don’t know anything about Pomerol.
#2 QOTD: You know Adam’s going to win!!! Danny & Lil will give him a run, but he’s way above any of the others.

Great simple show. Hoping that I’m not disappointed when I open the bottle of ‘05 Lussac-St-Emilion Bordeaux when I decide to break it out my cooler. If nothing else, it’ll be a learning experience and I can’t be mad at that.

AWESOME!!!!!!! love to see a pomerol tasting. if you want to post something from the 00,98 and 82 tasting, i would love to see that.
in terms of the petite village, i opened a 01 st emilion from chat quercey over the summer. i decanted it for about 3 hours and it was singing. st emilion and pomerol are a stones throw away. a lot of the elements that you were picking up in the 01 were similar to what was coming to me – plums, good cherry, cinnamon a little spice… yum. maybe taste the village tomorrow again.

QOTD – pomerol, love it. i cannot say i have so much experience with it cause A. it aint cheap, B. it is not all over the place. i have a few bottles in my cellar – fleure de gay 05, la pointe 04 and 01 vray croix de gay 01. i had some 95 and 96 that are gone. the 95 was kinda cooked and the 95 was sweet.
    prt 2 no friggin clue

    Gary—

Never had a Pomerol. Will we be sampling on the Thunder Cruise? (Ohhh, just a month away! YAY!).

American Idol lost me completely after the Sanjaya fiasco. My best friend’s daughter is a current finalist in the “Cleveland Idol” knockoff. I vote for HER! You go, Mary!

I, too, like the short but sweet shows like this one. And I miss the laid back Fridays. Just so ya know! And—next time do show us your cellar…and GVJr.’s room!

  155. March 13, 2009

I have only had a couple of Pomerols, but the 2000 Chateau Hosanna was AMAZING. It was one of the best Bordeaux I’ve had, probably beating some left bank wines (I know, it’s an unfair comparison as they’re so different) that were more than twice the price.

I have never seen American Idol. I plan to keep it that way.

Yo Gary! I’ve been loving your episodes ever since I found WLTV. Amazing stuff and has helped me alot on my studies as well. I’ve just been wondering and pondering.. where do you find these “Parker” scores or where do you ‘look’ them up?

QOTD: As for Pomerol. I’ve never had one. I think I will go purchase one this weekend. Really interested to find out how Pomerol tastes. Also liking these ‘chill-out’ style of Pomerol.

I have no idea about the American Idol thingie. But let’s say that Jack will win (if theres one).

QOTD: Pomerol is on my to do list of 2009 – of late I’ve been working through rioja wines and getting introduced to Bordeaux. I love merlot based wines and I love the old world flavor profiles so I’m looking forward to what that the Pom. region has in store.

American Idol: Danny will win. Gary, when do you have time to watch American Idol? Seriously incredible.

Sorry, haven’t cared about American Idol since season 2, so I have no idea.

Question for you Gary — how many bottles do you have in your private collection? Just curious, since I just started stocking my own cellar.

Gotta love working from home!…but I usually stay in the pajamas. anyways…

QOTD: I’ve only tried a few Pomerol, unfortunately. More experience with the left bank stuff.

QOTD part deux: Adam isn’t my favorite contestant, but he’s my pick to win in the early stages

    Great show!
Q1: I love Pomerol and have had some great wines from that region. I am a big fan of the merlot with some cab franc splashed in.
Q2: I’m going to go out on a limb and take sort of a long shot with Allison. She has a great rock voice.

  165. March 13, 2009

GV – American Wine Idol. I have been comparing my palate to yours by tasting the same wines you review and I am finding that we have similar preferences. That said, I think I will pass on Pomerol, at least for the time being.

  166. March 13, 2009

    Phil G

    Have a good trip, GV!

Like right bank wines, but haven’t had many Pomerols due to the high prices.

I would guess that Allison Iraheta will win this year…

Nice little video format. Flip cams are fun. BTW, the yellow flowers behind you look great.

QOTD1: I like the nice roundedness of pomerol , meaning the astringency is there and the smell is there and the aftertaste is just lovely wood/fruit driven, but they tend to be expensive wines given the company they keep. Chateau Rouget comes to mind, around $37 US.

QOTD2: Absolutely no idea who will win american idol. Don’t watch the show unfortunately so I can’t asses an educated guess.

    Gary,
Nice episode on the pair of Pomerols – - I was curious about your glassware – - what brand glasses were you tasting from? I liked them.

Keep up the good work – - love the show’s recent renaissance!

    GV,
Don’t let the negative comments about the Mezcal show get you down. I LOVED it. In fact, I wish you would do more shows like that (yes, I realize this is a wine show, but I have really enjoyed the spirit, beer and cheese shows you’ve done in the past).

QOTD #1 Never tasted a Pomerol. Will soon.
QOTD #2 Adam Lambert! No doubt about it.

  170. March 13, 2009

    Barbara

QOTD1: I don’t believe I’ve ever had a Pomerol but am interested in trying one soon.

QOTD2: Top 2 will have to be Danny Gokey and Adam Lambert. I’m torn, I think Adam is too screechy so Danny is my #1 if I must pick one.

  171. March 13, 2009

Great show today. Never had a Pom. Have to cure that. As for Idol, the guy from MIlwaukee’s gonna win.

  172. March 13, 2009

    winonino

good show. I also like the Pomerol wines. Right bank has been under rated by Americans for a long time. Would like to see a show on the new release 2007 Oregon Pinot Noirs

  173. March 13, 2009

    Brian Thomas Clark

    Hey Gary,

Never had a Pomerol (to my knowledge), but that will change now. I’ve read about the region a bit in the past, and it sounds like, due to its relatively small area and the size of their vine acreage, that it would be a great place to visit. Sounds like it would have more a vintner family atmosphere with all of the wineries being small producers.

Anyway, great show, I’ll have to pick one up now if i can find one under $40!

Oh, and I don’t watch Idol (GASP!).

QOTD…. i have to admit… I don’t watch that at all. Scratch that, I DO watch the first few eps at the begining of the season, just to watch the crashes. After that, I’m gone. So I’ll guess, contestant # 3?

  176. March 13, 2009

    winefarmer

    Gary,

I wonder what wines the “Polish Hammer” would drink?

  177. March 13, 2009

    D-Cos-And-It-Don't-Stop

Great episode. As a mid-20’s, former CKC, on a just slighty above CKC wine budget, I have a very small collection of wines I’m saving. And I hate it when you open a wine from the collection and it doesn’t live up to expection. (i.e. 2003 Laetitia Single Vineyard ‘La Colline’ Pinot Noir, cost $60, cellared for 2 years and was very disappointing).

QOTD #1, I’ve only had one Pom and enjoyed. Once my wine budget grows, I plan on trying more French Bordeauxs and Burgs, but for right now I can only afford the Rhones. Much better QPR.

    QOTD #2, Danny Gokey.

  178. March 13, 2009

    Rob Vrabel

Gary, great show! You crack me up and always keep me coming back to watch.

  179. March 13, 2009

QOTD 1:Had some Pomerol, like the varietal quite well. But then again I like all French wine. Hope to retire there someday and buy a vineyard!

QOTD 2: Danny Gokey KILLS it! He will win for sure, if he doesn’t then America got it WRONG!

Next time, how about a little tour of Castle Vaynerchuk! :)

  180. March 13, 2009

QOTD2: Danny Gorkey – HANDS DOWN!!!

  181. March 13, 2009

    Paryb

    great show Gary!

QOTD1: every Pomerol I’ve ever had hammered a sense of terroir into my head with a sledgehammer. If someone needed to understand what wine nerds mean by “tasting” the location, IMHO they should try Pomerol.

QOTD2: I’m thinking Adam Lambert is going to take first prize. I think though he will also be “saved” by the judges in Three or Four weeks.

  182. March 13, 2009

    Scottie P

    Gary,
Thanks for taking the time for a quick episode and a mini glimpse at you personal collection!

QOTD1: I can’t say I know anything about Pomerol, but I will certainly keep an eye out for it on the store shelves (damn you PA).

QOTD2: As much as I would love a shot at some free WLTV schwag, I can’t bring myself to guess at a winner. Reality TV is horrible and I don’t watch any of it! It has ruined TV and added to the slow decay of our society.

  183. March 13, 2009

    Richard Arblaster

    Hey Gary,

Another great episode, It must be nice not having to drive to work. :)

As for your QOTDs, I can’t answer either.

However I do have a question for you. Who is the best wrestler out there right now? :)

  184. March 13, 2009

    Neil

I liked this abbreviated Flip Ep better than yesterday’s show.

QOTD: I LOVE Pomerol. Merlot done right ROCKS. I popped a bottle of ‘03 La Gay when a friend of my wife, Elaine, visited and it blew away an ‘04 Pichon Baron.

Regarding American Idol, never watch it and/or Dancing With the Stars either, although I did see the Woz push the envelope last week when I was channel surfing.

Speaking of TV shows, Gary I always thought you could fit in on a LOST show in some hatch on the island tasting Dharma Merlot with Desmond.

Looking forward to trying Pomerol because I can’t remember ever having any.

Gary, I have to agree with some, that in general tv is not worth watching and the “reality” type shows are just a cheap way to produce, and pawn off as worthwhile, shows that are really a waste of time. Just think how much you can do in that hour! TV reduces your productivity.

Some advice for a soon to be parent, Gary please keep the tv off for the first few years of your child’s life. Get down on the floor and play and read to your child everyday! Watch clouds and bugs and animals not the big glass nipple.

We watched tv for children when my son was 1-3 years old. We noticed that it reduced his attention span and created problems when it was time to turn it off. It is also pretty un nerving to see your child stare blankly at the screen with their mouth hanging open and brain on “hold”. It was suggested to us that we remove media from the equation and after taking the advice we noticed a complete change. Maybe not the choice everyone would make but when you put your child’s mental and physical health first you see that there really is no place for TV. It can be a great “baby sitter” but at what cost in the long run. Studies have been showing that tv slows down brain function and many other effects thought of as negative.

Get outside and discover the amazing world we live in first hand. Like tasting dirt, flowers and leather you can learn way more from the experience if you are part of it and not just watching.

One last thing, just because you love sports doesn’t mean your child has too. Give them time and room to discover what they enjoy and if it isn’t the same as you then rejoice in the individual you have helped create.

    Beverly:

Best temperature to keep wine :

The ideal temperature to keep wine is between 50 and 57°F (10 and 14°C)

Wine needs a constant temperature all year round to mature.

A fridge is not a suitable place to keep wine as vibrations will destroy some of its components.

    Recommended temperature for chilling wine:

    * Red wine: 55-60°F / 12.7-15.5°C
    * White wine: 49-56°F / 9.5-13.3°C
    * Rosé wine: 49-51°F / 9.5-10.5°C

Good quick hit episode with laid back vibe that didn’t cancel out the “thunder” factor . . . that being said, all the good was undone by a QOTD which included the words “american idol” (unless that was simply an attempt on your part to humanize yourself in the eyes of those Vaniacs already at the alter). Peace.

question uno: I love pomerol. It just exudes sex and velvet for me when I drink them. They can get so ridiculously good when they age too, and its a lot of fun to drink well aged merlot as it just brings something completely different

Forgot to say thanks for sharing from your personal collection. Too bad one was a let down.

Nice to see that you bash yourself for being wrong on the longevity of a wine. That’s something that only time will tell for sure. Don’t beat yourself up too much.

I too am interested in what size of cellar you manage at home and/or if you also keep some at work? Hey you might not even drink wine when your at home and just have a couple bottles for company. That’s it right, you’ve got a small keg of Pabst in the pantry, at room temp, for after work. He he

As for Idol, Adam is going to take it.. however, he’s going to get voted off and the judges will invoke the new rule, save him, and he’ll go on to win!!!

    Great epi and wines!
QOTD1: Pomerol…small and a classy appelation producing wines with great finesse and elegance like a feminine styled Bordeaux, yet not tainted by descriptive classes/rankings. Hence, great traditional wines once again!

    QOTD2: Adam L?

  200. March 13, 2009

Love Pomerol. Love Merlot. Adam Lambert wins. How big is your wine cooler? Is that your only “cellar” besides the winelibrary of course? Probably already mentioned; For Pomerol Parker has 2001 at “90″; 2003 at “84″ both are “early”:http://www.erobertparker.com/newSearch/vintageChart1.aspx

With all the love for NJ, surprised to see you live in an apt in NYC; but then again you are a baller.

QOTD: I’m all for Pomerol, thanks for the additional facts; and have been extremely fortunate enough to taste a Petrus at a dinner I was at once….amazing stuff.

QOTD2: I think the American Idol winner will be one of the following three: Adam, Alison or Matt. I think that Alison is a touch too young (even though she doesn’t come accross as such)whereas the experience that Matt has at the piano bar and being a performer (plus he can jam the keys) has me thinking he’ll nudge out Adam.

Prices will probably stay the same, maybe come down a bit(if we’re lucky)Nothing new and dramatic, will stick to traditional, old-world wine-making and family-owned from generation to generation.

I bet the 2001 shows a little more stuff in 1 hour.

maybe not but it happens often enough to me.

2003 should be good and not last as long as a lot of the other vintages of Gazin (hot freaking year, 40 000 died from heat in frnace remember)

    Cellaring in apartment?

Gary, I would love to see a little show on what you recommend when cellaring in an apartment. I am in a small apartment but I have some wines that I want to store for some time (2 – 5 years). Can I do this with wine cooler/fridge? If so, what are some considerations when purchasing a cooler/fridge?

    Thanks for your time

Mr. Vaynerchuck!!!! You are a cool guy for sure. Good to see someone who has the intellectual latitude to appreciate fine wine and food, as well as the dynamic world of sports. You are indeed a valued member of our generation (I’m 28 so we are close in age). I am interested when your next show on Syrah, Petite Syrah, and maybe Shiraz will be. I am a Pinot drinker because I like the nuance and the relatively sophisticated pallet compared to most American Cabernet’s. I am now ready to learn more about Syrah and Shiraz from a value proposition point of view. I don’t get to watch your show everyday so if you could e-mail me back an answer (either to my inquiry or with a date for a show that will cover these topics, or both) that would be great! Keep up the good work buddy, you are doing good things for this generation.

    Best Regards,

Another show you should do is a video tour of your “wine cave.” I’d love to see what your most prized possessions are.

QOTD: My first thought of Pommerol is usually the large amount of counterfeit Petrus bottles that have found their way on wine lists. Other than that, never tried one, though I am cellaring a 2000 Chateau Le Caillou. Any thoughts of when to drink?

OQOTD: Sorry, not an Idol fan

Interesting show, loved seeing some of the bottles you would have picked to lay down in your own home collection, love the Gazin, great bottle have had the 03 and I completely get the white fruits (went back my tasting notes, I had poached pears listed in addition to the sour cherry, thats just funny. tasted 11/08) but I would think the Petit Village would open up with a little more time, but you may have popped between bottle evolutions (i.e. wait another 2 yrs)but I have never had it so i cant say for sure

QOTD 1 Pomerol, oh, Pomerol how expensive can thou be?
but seriously some of the most well rounded Bordeaux one can get for the money. French Merlot is such a different animal then Cali Merlot, and i mean literally contributing a nice gamey element and those structured dark fruits not found in domestic merlot. While the “blending” allows more backbone and secondary flavors and aromas to push through, but yet there is something more than primary verital that sets the right bank apart from what is tradionally thought of as “Bordeaux” and thats where the love affair begins

    QOTD 2 Really?

Haven’t had a ton of Pomerol, but I have enjoyed what I’ve tried. Danny is definitely winning Idol.

QOTD2: Don’t watch, but from what friends say, Adam Lambert sounds like the one to best.

Btw- Very belated congrats to Gary & Lizzy on their baby news!

There’s nothing like a soft, plumy Merlot based wine. Pomerol is a good place to find it with plenty of affordable sellers there.
Thanks for opening some maturing wines.

I’d love to see a wine pairing for chili (the State Food of Texas).

If you like the Austin music scene, you should check out Denton, TX. Some great things are shaking in north Texas.

    Hey Gary,

    nice show again!

Question 1: Pomerol is stunning! Just had a huge tasting of Lafleur with couple Sommeliers and Wine writers. Huge Vintages like 90, 95 and 01, but as well some lower rated, but perfect wines from the years like 99 and 98. Have a taste on 07. It’s pretty traditional and very elegant and of course still in oak – was a cask sample.
Aside of Lafleur I’m not sure if the price difference from the tops like Le Pin and Petrus to the rather unknown producers isn’t far too large? I’m having much more fun in enjoying high-quality wines from not overrated producers. But it’s nice to see how good a quality Merlot-based blend can mature and bring so much deepness to the wine…

Question 2: Have no idea, cause I’m in Germany… Plus I probarbly wouldn’t care.

    Have a nice day!
Greetings from Germany – The most passionate Riesling-producing-Country!!

I found a couple good wine guides on Free Book Quest, but their legality might be in question. Does anyone know a good guide for someone just getting into wines?

We just had a bottle of 83 Petit Village at the weekend (with Entrecote) and we loved it!! (95 points) – This wine simply needs time until you can really enjoy it. So keep the rest of your bottles, try again in 2027 and let’s hope we’re both still alive!
    Best wishes

GV-love you, your passion and pod cast. It makes my commute from Sactown to Oakland bearable plus educational. I have tried my first white burgundy on your recommendation and got SCHOOLED at BevMo. I asked for the white burgundy and was taken to the red section (clue one, I was sooo outta my league) and the clerk points to a wine and I say, “what…behind the chardonnay” she politely clarifies that I wanted a white burgundy, right? …and edjumacates me that is a french chardonnay. She went on to say french chardonnays are tottttalllly different than buttery/sweet CA chardonnays. Dooohhhh, but drinking it right now and like it. I’m just opening up to the possibility of white wine and never liked CA chardonnay’s. Thanks for pushing me to try new things…and given I married a New Jersey Man…I’m of course partial to you.

    QOTD-Kris of course

Nice fun little show. You need to do a little tour. Show the Vayniacs your “cellar.” Show us what you have stashed away for 2010 and beyond…..

QOTD1: I need to learn more about the area, but I respect that they dont have a class system. Never tried a wine from Pomerol but Id love to own Bordeauxs from all regions to taste the differences.

QOTD2: Dont care for American Idol. Do some of them have the ability to sing? Sure. Do they sing anything meaningful? ehhhh. Id rather listen to Steely Dan, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, etc. No manf. music for me.

I have had a few pomerols that were just ok, but most have absolutely blown me away! American Idol…. that’s still on?

QOTD1: I’ve heard Pomeral wines described as containing a hint of “iron filth” and I’ve always been intrigued to find out just what the hell that’s supposed to mean. One day when I get a bit more cash, I intend to find out :)

QOTD2: I think that Adam will take it – that guy is the only reason that I’m keeping my eye on the show (- absolutely sick cover of Tears for Fears “Mad World” if anybody hasn’t seen it.)
