line of the day – ‘it’s like you see a 4ft 9in gal walking down the street…and then she beats the sh** out of you’

The guest wasn’t bad, but wasn’t great either – a little bit too inclined to agree with GV. Highlight was the fact that Mott forgot to bleep out the first swearword to actually make it to air.

  • QOTD: Well, that’s easy: (1) Excellent fruit, (2) Poor winemaking.

The goal of a great winemaker is to let the quality of the fruit come through in the bottle and not screw it up in the wine room. I’m guessing Evergreen’s winemaker still has a little bit more time before they can (or even if they will) get to that point. However, as i am flying back from Napa Valley right now as we speak, some of the most hyped vineyards can be the most disappointing and leave you angry towards the winery and their product.

Ouch, you guys should hold back a little when reviewing people. And they should sell the grape juice. More profit less work.

OK guys, first of all, wheres the message on the chalkboard? good call on the wines, marlborough pinots are really coming along. The wrestler made me mad too gary, but it makes you think which is a good thing, and the watchmen was kinda limited as well, but overall, we are just human, we cant all be DR. MANHATTAN.

QOTD: anything that CAN be screwed up, ultimetly WILL be screwed up, especially with the human factor in play! LOL!

Gary- The Wrestler….SUCKED so bad! Not even Marissa Tormeis washed up old ass could save it! Mickey Rourke redeems himself?! R U kidding me!! This is typical Hollywood, insider, highbrow, “we know better than you” CRAP, that the media lapped up and spewed back! Did ANYBODY who wrote a review for this dreck, actually WATCH it!?! Garbage!

I implore you to go out and find “The Pope of Greenwich Village”! The best (and last decent) film of Mickey Rourkes career! Eric Roberts too! LOL!

I liked the episode, the only issue I had was I felt like you “Gary” influenced what they said a bit too much when it came to what they were smelling and tasting.

I think it is because making great wine is not about technology it is about soul and so they can spend a ton on wine making and the place but not pay attention to the soul of the wine, also the grape juice could be good because they might have a different person make the juice or maybe the wine maker is great at making juice.

  • QOTD: Good grapes, good soil, bad winemakers, bad management.

    Also, screw tops!

Gary, great show and great guests, obviously the man does not like Evergreen.

good grapes, but bad winemakers, Gary, what about a show of cabs, blind tasting?

The show was a bit disjointed as we were talking Chard from Sbragia and then moved into Pinots from a couple different places. Liked the guest though, seemed to be pretty humble and regular. A little whipped, though.
BTW – the old Beringer Sbragia Limited Release was a killer Chard.

QOTD – Clayton, I think they did it on purpose to rub your nose in it. I have no idea. Next time, if there is one, go to Amity Cellars and Firesteed. I enjoyed the former because it was like tasting in somebody’s garage, which had some charm. The latter had a nice tasting room.

QOTD – That just goes to show that wine is not just fermented grape juice. So much more goes into making good wine.

Although not a fan of the “guest” episodes, Clayton’s was one of the better ones.

QOTD: never confuse money with effort. and perhaps the wines were manipulated to be showy and/or to get great scores from certain critics and the resulting product was inferior. Contrast that with the grape juice, which they probably did little manipulation resulting in a product where the grapes spoke for themselves.

Evergreen is the perfect example of starting off with a horrible site and expecting that money can make it good. You cannot make a good wine on a valley floor that is the most fertile land in the friggin’ universe! Second they are making wine there as a damn tourist trap. Come on!

Next, Patton Valley is making some killer wines. Do not try their floor sweepings wine. It should not be 32 dollars as it is bad, but the owners need to pay the mortgage. Their estate stuff is nectar of the gods.

Four graces is a nice place and good people. Their vineyards are not the best sites by far. Who told these people where to go? Sorry Gary, but I think you are even a little clueless as to who has the good sites and best value Pinot Noirs in Oregon.

Let us know if you want a list of good producers that get grapes from good sites. We can kick some but at that $35 level.

Living in the Portland metro area, really enjoyed this episode. Clayton and his lovely wife, missed out on some of the wonderful established wineries, as well as some of the new, hot players. Erath, is back big time w/Gary Horner making some wonderful wines. Lange, Archery Summit, Ken Wright, Domaine Droughin, Rex Hill & Chehalem are several notches above Evergreen, and the Four Graces, for that matter. Sokel-Blosser continues to make nice pinot noir, after all these years, along w/Ponzi and the King of Pinot..Eyrie, even w/Poppa’s recent passing. Hopefully, you can come out, and check out this wonderful laid back environment. As far as being a Jets fan, what frustration, you must be on medication for that. Having been raised in the Bay Area, during the glory years of the 49ers, have enjoyed much success, as well as the many lean years. Perseverance, develops character and character develops hope. Hope does not disappoint, so be faithful, they will come around. Thanks for the great work/show.

    Best,
    Jeff

That guy’s pretty funny. QOTD: Something about yeast and oak and stuff that winemakers control. The question is though…do grapes that make good GRAPE JUICE make GOOD WINE and vice-versa?

    Gary Vee,

    1. When talking to someone from the show ‘Fox & Friends’, it is considered redundant to yell “Wrong” whenever they try to formulate an opinion.

    b. Of course her family is a collection of drunks. You’d drink too if you were forced to watch the Fox ‘Television Network’.

III. And last, but not least, maybe the folks at Evergreen just had their pinot noir and their grape juice mixed up. Much in the same way that in the weeks preceeding the 2008 general election, your ‘network’ on many occasions identified the Democratic Party nominee for the highest office in the land as ‘Osama’ instead of ‘Obama’, along with conveniently placing the letter ‘D'(for Democrat) in the caption of actual Republican candidates who were likely to go down to defeat in the November election.

    Good night, and good luck!

Don’t rely on this review of Patton Valley to judge Patton Valley wines. For my money, the 2006 Willamette Valley reviewed here is decent but not their best Willamette Valley wine. Other vintages, 2002 – 2005, are beautiful, elegant wines. Their barrel select Lorna Marie is gorgeous.

2006 was a year that produced big ripe fruit, and it shows in their 2006 Willamette Valley, which doesn’t match the same style as prior vintages. But chemical on the nose, falling apart, and astringent? Not based upon my tastings. I heard Gary had reviewed the wine and diss’d it, so I ran home and opened a 2006 to compare to my previous tasting of the same vintage at the winery. I have to say, once again, don’t rely on this review. 2007, which was a very difficult vintage in Oregon, shows a return to elegance at Patton Valley.

I think we see a little bit of the power of suggestion and what makes us human, as the guests fall in line behind Gary’s take on the wine. I am not saying Gary’s take isn’t how he experienced the wine, just that his experience with that wine at that point in time will not, for my money, be representative of your experience. I don’t want to see anyone not try one of my favorite Oregon pinot producers.

Four Graces does make some beautiful wine, actually elegant in a style not unlike Patton Valley. They are not $20 wines unless their prices have come down but they are in the same ballpark as the Patton Valley Willamette Valley pinot in price.
