Hey Gary, I can see where others are coming from in their displeasure with the episode. As someone who has watched college humor and the Amir/Streeter prank war, I pretty much expected the show to turn out as it did. Obviously it wasn’t the best in terms of wine knowledge, but was a change of pace and that never hurts anyone.

I commend the effort Gary, but this episode did nothing for your show. However, it may have won College Humor a few new viewers–if you’re into juvenile, wise-guy humor. In that genre, Amir was quite funny at times! As a Wine Library episode, though, this one was scraping the bottom. Sorry. I did find your opinion of the Norton Malbec to be right on. I was disappointed with that one, too.

QOTD: The highest priced wine I purchased was a Champagne, but I’d rather not divulge more. However, it begins with a K and ends with a G, and it was a Rose.

OK, I didnt care for this show either..but I dont know why peeps get so angry!! LOL It really just shows how difficult it can be to do this type of show, and be as entertaining and endearing as you are… SO….it reminds me how awesome you are and how much I love WLTV!

It’s not your fault Gary, I think people just aren’t familiar with their humor. I watch Jake and Amir all the time so I thought this episode was great. Don’t let it get you down!

    hey gary V,

i think that this was funny show, but you really needed to get the guys to beer bomb the rest of the content in the large glass bucket. then sink a bong or two and see what happens(”Geeks Go Wild”).

so all in all, i didnt think it was a bad show, you just didnt need to adjust for the two “Dudes” on the show!

    take it easy GV

By the way, Gary seems to be getting some equally unfair criticism on the Jake and Amir site. I thought that Gary did a good job of trying to find the balance between indulging his guests and talking about wine. It was just always likely to be difficult in this particular format. Also, like I said, it is always endearing to see someone trying to share their passion for something. Passion is clearly something Gary has in droves and I think that’s a brilliant thing.

Why is everybody taking this video so seriously. Yea these guys are acting, if you watch their episodes a lot you would understand the whole flow of this episode.

Jake and Amir probably weren’t the best people to have on the show for real wine critics but it’s good to have a joke from time to time. Plus this site probably just got an extra 50k hits from this video being on here as its linked on Jake and Amir’s website and various other blogs.

Maybe I’m just old, but these guys are NOT funny. Just lots of senseless babble to hear themselves talk, ESPECIALLY Amir. Get a life, losers!

Amir and Jake are in character for the vast majority of the video. Far from being the kind of idiotic college kids that some have assumed they are, a good deal of their humour is derived from mocking this very idiocy. Those who failed to realise this probably need to pull their nose out of a wine glass for just a moment and take a quick look at the world around them. Amir and Jake obviously aren’t wine experts so I can understand the backlash but to be fair, they do seem almost apologetic when pressed briefly out of character and asked for real opinions on the wine – it obviously isn’t something they are particularly knowledgeable about.

I agree that the show didn’t really work, there wasn’t much conversation about the wine, which has obviously disappointed a lot of people. At the same time, I also imagine a lot of Jake and Amir fans were also disappointed that the duo weren’t given much chance to riff off each other, although given the format of the show that’s perfectly understandable. Nevertheless, the video was still enjoyable enough, which brings me meandering slowly towards my point. This is the first wine library video I’ve seen and it was as a result of being a fan of Amir and Jake. It’s surely a good idea to do a few shows like this as it will help to bring in a different audience and maybe encourage a different type of person to become interested in wine. Although perhaps that is exactly what some of you are worried about. The snobbery that is widely (and often incorrectly) associated with wine drinkers has all too often seeped through in the comments here, a recent example being mikek: ‘QOTD: … bag my groceries, moron’. It is this kind of aggressive snobbery that continues to make the whole world of wine seem so inaccessible to many people (myself included), and keeps people’s ‘wine self-esteem’ low. To those of you who stooped this low: congratulations on further propagating the stereotype.

Anyway, I think the show was a good idea and maybe this show will stimulate some interest in wine in previously untapped areas. That, surely, was its ultimate goal and that should be applauded. It is wonderful to see anyone who is enthusiastic about their interests and trying to share it with as many other people as possible. I can understand (if not wholly agree with) the criticism of its execution, but the idea itself was laudable.

Please realise, people, that Amir is in character. He is supposed to be the most stupid person on the face of the earth.

It was hard to tell whether these guys were acting or if that was their real personality? But the content was great as usual and if wine is gonna make it big in the US this is the generation that it is has to appeal to. Good job at bringing in a “different” type of guest. Like Gary says, its all about trying new stuff.

to many jokes this is the third time that i stop viewing a show after the first 3 minutes. I like watching guest that have some knowledge to share not two people joking around.

After reading the article entitled ‘Has Wine Library TV jumped the Shark’ on http://www.drinksareonme.net, I have just left the following comment intended for the author and website creator; a Mr Dale Cruse. Though Im not sure if it will be published, I invite all Vayniacs to express their disatisfaction towards him.

“Following on from the comment I have just added on WLTV – we really need to put this episode into perspective.

For the hundreds of great episodes that Gary has done over the years I find Dale’s one damming comment intended to place the programme on the funeral pyre deeply sadening.

For Dale. Next time you are scrolling Wikipedia in search of some clever witted phrase to degrade your subject matter, may I suggest you take a quick peek at the word ‘Invidiousness’ – as I believe you are showing signs of it!”

Gary, what is your infatuation with these College Humor guys? Changing the wine world shouldn’t mean lowering yourself to allow idiots to make fun of wine. Stop with cheap wine and cheap people…stick to education, respect, and entertainment.

I’m not sure what all the complaints here are about, great execution by gary, good chemistry with the guests, and even educational. The fact that both these guys now appreciate Riesling just goes to show the power of GV. Open your minds Vayniacs, this is how most of America sees wine right now. This is our target audience.

QOTD: probably a sylvain bailly sancerre for around 20 bones. I only gamble on wines over CKC price points from the Loire, haven’t been disappointed yet, red or white.

Is this the first failed video of Gary? hmm.. I can’t continue watching this episode….

Gary, you don’t need these two on your show…

Jake and Amir were just doing their shtick that they do for college humor and their website. The host simply didn’t understand that and couldn’t play along it seemed. This audience is just filled with people who have no idea about pop culture.
The fans of this show would have the same opinion if they saw Yakov Smirnoff on the show without any prior knowledge to his comedy style. And if you, as a host, didn’t actually care about that style and just wanted to expand your audience then that show would be a flop also.

I’ve only been watching the show for awhile, and just getting into wine. I am one of these college kids all you above seem to hate that knows little about the wine world. I have seen jake and amir before, and they act just like they do in the show so I thought that was quite funny. The thing I really liked about this episode was that it was nice to see people around the same level of wine knowledge as me. I couldn’t have done much better…well better than amir, but thats not saying much. Great job Gary.

    Was Amir stoned?

Worth a shot Gary but probably should have scrapped the episode when it didn’t work out! Amir clearly doesn’t give a rats about you or the show! His actions even seemed to be embarrassing Jake… I hate that I’m in college and people might think I’m like that!

Anyway hope you bounce back Gary in fact I know you will… :)

Not sure how many Vayniacs have ever provided two comments with regards to one episode, but I feel one is necessary in light of my earlier message – just felt guilty.

Over the years we Vayniacs have been graced with over 600 episodes of highly entertaining and incredibly informative episodes of WLTV – and lets not forget the most important point of all; its all been for FREE!

I think we owe a big apology to Gary, and to put things into perspective; I mean he hasnt just killed a man for christ sake or caused the recent great depression – well maybe just a slight depression ;)

    We apologise….sorry

It’s pretty obvious by the comments, GV watchers loved GV, and CH watchers loved CH.

So apparently most Jake and Amir watchers find GV a little different then what they usually watch. And Gary watchers were clearly not used to seeing Jake and Amir. Its sad that they can’t appreciate the humor. And im sure GV watchers think its sad that most of us didnt appreciate GV.

I am a huge Jake and Amir fan, and I must say it took a good 10 mins to get used to Gary. Just because he is so different then they are in his approach and mannerism. At the end, I see he is just a regular guy a little more excited about wine then I am. Maybe alot more excited. To each his own.

Nice try on both sides… win some lose some.

…and honestly if you thought their humour was too “college” then you have never heard of the Marx brothers or Abbott and Costello – As they are very clearing playing Straight man (Abbott/Jake) bumbling idiot (Costello/Amir) not that they’re anywhere close to that level but it seemed fairly obvious to me

  25. March 31, 2009

wow, I must say I love you show but reading these comments have me completely laughing my a$s off. They are playing characters…do you think if he only ate chicken nuggets he would even be around? I mean calm down ppl this is a sad day in both comedy history and in your shows history. How ppl can so completely miss the mark. Personally I thought the show wasn’t the best but they obviously didn’t know anything and if you expected more then skip this episode plain and simple.
