Major Pazz on this episode. No value add from these guests. Nice thought though to bring some neophytes but not sure it worked this time. I got some of the Les Terrasses at WL a few months back – but based on the tasting it will have to stay in the cellar until the heat settles down.

Hate to say it but that was a Crap show. Love you Gary but that was annoying.

the CKCs need to learn more about wine, so hopefully this show will help out. they need to impress the ladies a bit after school gets out especially if they are dating the cougars.

QOTD – a lot of money – $220 ( for a magnum- that is a double bottle for you CKCs) and no i would not pay double just because of you

Crap! Was like the worst Beavis & Butthead episode ever. I had to can it after Beavis referred to the nose as smelling like a dog. That was about 5 minutes in. I love the thunder show and look forward to it daily but this was just awful.

Totally a throw-away episode. Possibly worst episode… ever? Terribly boring guests who didn’t even care to be there and didn’t even have the energy to fake it.

QOTD: $50 sauternes. I bought it as a wedding gift. I’m really not a fan of the College Humor folks. I’m in my early 20’s and their antics are so juvenile. I don’t find their stuff funny. Oh well. That’s just my opinion.

Dissapointing show in more than one way for me.

  21. March 30, 2009

Got nothing out of this show. I like the idea of bringing people that have little or no knowlege about wine on but these guys???????? Jay summed it up

Im in total agreement with the other viewers so far.

Though I love you Gary and all that you do, why do you insist on degrading your usually superiour quality episodes and replacing them with these cheap, non content, once in a while bum notes.

Everytime I see an episode entitled hanging out with College kids or chilling with the CKs I just wanna vom.

I am not a big fan of the CKC, at least when it comes to WLTV. Perhaps these guys are really funny on their show. I love comedy and even stupid comedy, but I have to agree with many other people above… it was somewhat annoying. We all still appreciate you though Gary.

I couldn’t stand watching Amir on this Episode, so I tried their latest video via the link. I could only watch 30 seconds and then stopped. My G_d, he is so bad.
Please, when you have guests, make sure they they can qualify for guests, ie, acting like normal people. If Amir is going to lead this world, we are in a heep of trouble. Don’t ever have idiots like Amir on the show. And you were right, a very disappointing show {because of Amir}!
Jake’s last comment nailed my thoughts so accurately.

    Dr. J

i laughed my ass off. where did you find these guys ? ??cocoa puffs on the back end ?? it just goes to show that you don’t really get in to wine until you get older, more mature, and more experienced.

my real question, though, are these guys are in college ? what are they learning, and how did they get in to the higher learning institution in the first place ? and the video was stupid college humor. isn’t that what it was supposed to be ? (btw, i am old enough to be their dad and wondering where did my money go on that college education ?)

QOTD: the most expensive wine i bought was a 1945 bordeaux for a bargain price of $ 250. it is still in my collectables section.

  28. March 30, 2009

    Brad R

Is college humor paying for some time on your show? Why do you keep having these idiots on your show?

  29. March 30, 2009

    Rob

Very frustrating to watch this video. I enjoy watching people that know more about wine and can teach me something. I don’t want to see people that know LESS!

Gary saved it for the most part but a good glass can’t fix a crap wine.

  30. March 30, 2009

    Pablo Nyarady

    Gary,

I normally enjoy your shows (some a ton like the one with the German Wine director or the ones at Cru)… I am sorry, but I did not enjoy this one at all, I actually skipped through most of it and watched just your tasting notes… Some of your past guests have been spectacular and added much to your already great repertoire… You should consider heading to the Warner Building at Columbus Circle and doing a show with Andrew Bradbury from Clo, you will love his concept/place and he is a really good guy, with lots of knowledge as well as personality… Great place to do your show, amazing spot with a killer backdrop!

    All the best,

    Pablo

Gonna’ have to fling up EIGHT Z’s on this one. MAJOR Pass, super disjointed, let’s pour this episode out and move on.

These two guests couldn’t have cared less, they seemed completely uninterested. Perhaps this is where the show is going with GV’s 2.0 celebrity play. Love you GV, but just saying.

Came in as a fan of Jake and Amir. Their solo videos are RIDICULOUSLY funny, but I’ll agree that if you’re not used to their back-and-forth it would probably get a bit annoying. I’d say check out jakeandamir.com for 2-minute bites into the lives of J+A. I promise you won’t be disappointed.

BTW, no I’m not in college, they are also no longer in college, but collegehumor.com is making some of the best original content there is online.

    Hey Gary,

Amir might be the only guy in North America who is more irritating than Dr. House. The Vayniacs seem to react well to guests who know something about wine and who add to our knowledge. But Jake and Amir can’t do that, and if they are not amusing [and they aren't] they bring nothing positive and actually detract from your show.

  36. March 30, 2009

    Mrs Jocelyne

Really enjoyed this, Jake and Amir funny as usual. I also learned something today, vayniacs have a really bad sense of humor.

  37. March 30, 2009

    Dusty

i actually appreciate you having people on your show that make it relevant to me. thank you. i might actually try to go get blitzed drunk on wine now.

  38. March 30, 2009

    KyBoy

Wasn’t a huge fan of the episode either. I don’t agree w/ the folks that say you have to be mature or old to enjoy wine, but I do find it necessary to have people on your show who are at least INTERESTED in learning about wine. These dudes def have their place, but it’s not on WLTV.

QOTD: 1996 Dom Perignon for my honeymoon at about $100 bones…it was good, but not what I had it pumped up to be.

  39. March 30, 2009

    FriscoGrapes

I understand doing one for the CKC, but man that was rough. Ouch. Next time, bring them to your place and ditch the 2nd grade cafeteria.

    AUSSIE SAMMY S

    PAINFUL Episode GARY…..

I’m sorry that would have been the worst show I have ever seen on WLTV. Beer or hard liquor should have been tasted on this particular show not wine. I like your guests to have at least SOME interest in wine….these two clowns didn’t give a rats ass about the wine…PLEASE PLEASE don’t have people on your show who don’t have any interest in wine…or you’ll probably lose me as a long time viewer.

  41. March 30, 2009

    badgerbadgerbadger

Have any of the college humor guests been good? Saw 615 and this(649)and didn’t care for either show. Even the Greg Ng show was mediocre and I’m a fan of his site. Stick with the Kevin Rose’e of the webworld. No more complete newbs to wine-drinking.

  42. March 30, 2009

    Stebe

Jake and Amir I still like you.

Half of these people seem to think Jake and Amir are real people. If you watched their show the idiocracy would make more sense to you.

They appear to not be the best fit for the WLTV people.

  43. March 30, 2009

    Paryb

Hate and Vitrol here too, I think the College Humor guys are funny on their site, but this was pretty painful.

QOTD: Most expensive wine? have to be Verite le Joie and Le Muse, about 175 each…they were phenomenal, blew my mind, both of them, and No, I wouldn’t pay more to buy them from Amir.

  44. March 30, 2009

    keara

i love u jake and amir!!

  45. March 30, 2009

    Brad R

These guys aren’t even funny on their own show, let alone yours.

  46. March 30, 2009

    Chris Short

Gary, thank for rating some less expensive wines. The economy as it is, 10-12 bones is my price point. As far as the guests, they are funny dudes, but not on your show. I like WLTV because it isn’t pretentious, but I like the guests to care. Kevin Rose seemed like kind of a novice (like me) but at least he had interest in what he was doing and wanted to taste and learn more.

  47. March 30, 2009

    California Cab Lover

I have to agree that this was not a good show. I also think the 2 major reasons being it was not funny and they (especially Amir) seemed to care less about wine and were not that interested in learning.
At least your previous novice guests wanted to learn something.

  48. March 30, 2009

So the worst WLTV episode gets a sequel, huh? You’ve got a future in Hollywood, Gary!

  49. March 30, 2009

Probably the worst episode I’ve watched of WineLibrary.TV so far. I love the show, but these two homo’s need to go. Sorry, but don’t invite these guys or anyone like them on another episode. Keep up the good work and I’m looking forward to the next thunder show.

  50. March 30, 2009

This was a great show, Jake and Amir are the best. I have never watched before, but after seeing your great taste in guests on the show, I plan on becoming a regular.

  51. March 30, 2009

    Bruton

Yikes…. If this was the first, second, or even 10th episode of WLTV that I’d seen, I probably wouldn’t have come back for more. I understand where you’re going with the “get new people into vino” move, but I’d be more careful in the future so that the WLTV rep isn’t at stake.

  52. March 30, 2009

QOTD: $110 bottle of Barolo. No.

  53. March 30, 2009

    Mouthfeeler9028753

Jake and Amir are ahead of their time. This wine show is a stretch for them as far as a setting is concerned so they shouldn’t be judged by it or the one other video that most of you have seen of them. People who watch wine shows should not attempt to be critics of comedy and anyone who does is a prick. Also if you’re judging me for writing this, you are a prick. I can almost guarantee that within 2 years both of these guys will be making more money doing their “stupid comedy” than any of you and will be able to buy up all of your little expensive wines, dump them out and use them to urinate in. So keep talking trash but these guys have a huge following and it is growing everyday. Enjoy your wine tho, jerks.

  54. March 30, 2009

    sam

I don’t think those two guys are changing the wine world…but still, fun show. A little goofiness never hurt anybody.

That Norton you guys drank is twice the price here in Québec (what a rip-off!)

QOTD: I usually try to stay under 50$ for a bottle of wine. The most expensive was probably a Château Laroque 2001, which cost around 55$. And no, I would not pay twice the price off someone who knows less than me about wine.

Cheers! Nice to have you back Gary!

  55. March 30, 2009

    guymandude

I don’t think these guys are into wine or comedy.

    QOTD; Ah, no.

  56. March 30, 2009

    C

Amir has a very interesting character that you need to get used to in order to enjoy this. He’s staying in character for the majority of the video. If you think that’s just the way he acts, you probably wouldn’t have enjoyed this at all because he would have come across as a douche and a half.

  57. March 30, 2009

    kristin

jake and amir are acting, people. amir is not really an idiot. they are playing their characters. i am a huge jake and amir fan, but i didnt watch this whole thing. their characters dont work on this show. but at least i can say that instead of bashing the host of the show for being boring and not funny. obviously that is not what he is going for. its apples and oranges.

  58. March 30, 2009

    Rachael Osborn

I love your show and I love Jake and Amir but I don’t think they work in your format. I love skittles and I love chili, but I don’t want to eat skittle-flavored chili.

I’ll be back tomorrow with bells on Gary, keep up the good work.

Worst 26 minutes and 16 seconds in WineLib TV history. I wish I could get the time back I wasted waiting for the show to get better.

Followup to some of the angry posters….I think these guys are pretty funny, and alot of the CH stuff is fucking hilarious….my favorite being internet party…it just didn’t work in this format. FWIW I thought Jancis Robinson(for those who aren’t in the know, a british masters of wine, and very respected critic) was awkward as hell too.

Sorry Gary, but this one was rough to watch.
I have no problem with guests that really are not into wines, (like the Rocketboom hostess about a year ago), but these guys brought nothing to the table.
Even the question of the day left me a wondering.

Hey come on guys, fair play they were not great the greatest guests by far, but im sure gary is the first to admit that without offending his guests. He held it together, i think we all saw his pain when he couldnt teach the guys something usefull. Knowone has a crystal ball and can tell whos going to be a great guest. Garys gave us some great shows and without bad there is no great. The glass is definetly half full here meaning theres more shows to come. lets here something positive ????
Plus if anyone does need cheering up after it please watch the basketball link with Amir, if his no interest in wine should be punished it definetly was that day. :-)

Keep up the great work Gary.

Little shout out for your guys in England would be good.

  71. March 30, 2009

    ArtInsightTV

Good job Gary at managing this train wreck…. You got skills.
My two lowest rated WLTV shows happen to be both college humor shows because the guests are disrespectful, annoying and simple not funny.
Jake was cool and respectful and gave an honest try. He approached the wine with a level of humility — cool. But damn! — Amir was just annoying and disrespectful in my belief to you, to wine and most important to the Vayniacs community.
I fought myself from turning the show off. Your BRAND Gary empowered me to sit through it.

  72. March 30, 2009

  73. March 30, 2009

I’m just impressed you didn’t punch the one to your left.

Though I’m no longer a part of the CKC contingent, I hope WLTV knows that doesn’t represent what the new wine drinking generation is all about.

That episode would have been better kept in the vault.

  74. March 30, 2009

Gary, just about always love your show and your passion for wine but…
I know that these guys are the trendy thing of the moment but so was the octomom and I haven’t seen her on the show, or will I?
QOTD: 1990 Latour at around three hundred dollars.

  76. March 30, 2009

    Cameron J

Not my gig, but I’ve never seen them before so I probably just don’t get it.

QOTD: Probably a couple bills for some Bordeaux. And, no.

Very dissapointing gary!, i wanna beat that stupid Amir kid, pummel him till he craps his pants!!!!!!
QOTD: YES I WOULD BY THAT BOTTLE FROM HIM THEN BREAK IT OVER HIS HEAD!! BEST MONEY I EVER SPENT.Dont ever have these retards on the show again, thanx. GO CHARGERS!

    Hey Gary,

You should have slapped those guys around the head. Morons. Didnt do it for me. I love your shows and find them really informative and so enjoyable. But, I turned this one off half way through as those guys just annoyed me. No reflection on you or your incredible show but I would not be interested in seeing those guys on the show again.

  80. March 30, 2009

    AbstruseJuice

Wow, this was an interesting episode…

I started off flat out weird, the chemistry between the guests and Gary was off, I was not enjoying it very much for the first 10 minutes or so. Anyone notice how Gary stared at Amir early on when he interrupted Jake during the intros? I thought that was funny

But then it picked up, I kinda warmed up to Amir’s ridiculous style of humor, and laughed my ass off at the “For people who don’t know, what’s the difference between smelling and drinking” line.

Overall it was a very odd episode, but I was delighted with the outcome.

QOTD: $0, as I am just getting into wine and have yet to even purchase some for myself.

  81. March 30, 2009

    BT86

Amir was trying way too hard to be funny and it just failed. He came off like a guy who can’t be funny off the cuff, but must be funny in a high-production way I guess. Whatever…I liked the other guy though. Show was tough to work through…probably my least favorite so far…just sorta felt like you were stumbling through it…

    QOTD: You are an idiot

  82. March 30, 2009

    Oklahoma Michael

    Terrible

  83. March 30, 2009

Wow that was awful, a real train wreck. Gary, I guess your in your 30’s so why are you trying to act like your still a hip 20 year old?

  84. March 30, 2009

HEY! Jake and Amir are the best!!! (and to anyone who doesn’t know, Amir isn’t an idiot, he just plays one :P )

a glass of cheap champain at a strip club in paris…. cost me 180 euros (a bit more then 300$) AND I WOULD DEFINITLY NOT BUY IT FOR TWICE THE PRICE!!!! even from Amir.. or Jake

a bit disapointed from the episode. i loooove jake and amir, but they are not live material. good in writing-acting sketches on CH

  86. March 30, 2009

    Mark E.

    Jake -> Dumb,
    Amir -> Dumber.
Jesus Gary, most of your shows are a base hit, and a few guest shows are even a home run or a rare grand slam (like Charles Smith from Walla Walla, get him back on). But this show was a foul ball. And the foul ball went up into the stands and knocked a poor old lady unconscious. Thats how bad this show was.

  87. March 30, 2009

    chuy

WOW MOUTHFEELER, TAKE IT A LITTLE PERSONAL, LITTLE MAN-CRUSH MAYBE. ID RATHER BE BROKE AND DRINK GOOD WINE THAN LOADED AND ANNOYING LIKE THESE TWO TARDS!! THATS NOT HUMOR BY THE WAY. GARY SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER, I HOPE HE WASNT THINKING IT WAS GOING TO BE A SERIOUS EPISODE, MAYBE TO GIVE THESE TWO BUNGHOLES A LITTLE LESSON ON WINE TO ENRICH THEIR LIVES. SPEAKING OF BUNGHOLES, BEAVIS AND BUTTHEAD IS FUNNYY, THESE TWO JIZBAGS, NOT FUNNY. JIZBAGS! THATS FUNNY! NEW WORD. THATS THEIR NEW KNICKNAMES JIZBAG (AMIR) BUNGHOLE (THE OTHER GUY). IDIOTS!

  88. March 30, 2009

    Taylor

I can’t outright disagree with the majority of comments. The show was pretty uncomfortable to watch, but it’s not because those guys are stupid. Jake and Amir are playing characters for this episode. Unfortunately, it doesn’t quite work well in this format.

GV, I don’t want to be too negative, but that was painful at times. Sometimes people try too hard to be funny and they wind up being annoying. I am sure these guys are actually nice and often funny, but not here. Still, I have liked many of the college humor videos that I’ve seen…

Also, I tried the Pesquie a few months ago and actually enjoyed it. I had it with a meal and wasn’t ‘rating it’ in my head, but felt it was better than the experience you had with it here.

QOTD – great question – I’ve spent over $75 on a wine, and would NOT spend twice the price on it – no matter who was the salesman.

  91. March 30, 2009

    Hello

So I just came for the Jake and Amir
and I just watched for the Jake and Amir
and I just stayed for the Jake and Amir

    and I was happy.

  92. March 30, 2009

The shark is in the tank…..”Ready Fonzie”? I sure hope not!

  93. March 30, 2009

    Gobi

    GV,

Dont want to be rude or anything just calling it like I see it, but this episode was very annoying, the first college humor video was much better… waaaayyy better

  94. March 30, 2009

    Adam Wallstein

Afraid this was a major VaynerPAZZZZZ and a Vayner-clank to boot. A tiny bit of interest in wine would perhaps have balanced out the goofiness… Oh well.

  95. March 30, 2009

    Kevin K

I have nothing nice to say, so I will say nothing at all.

  96. March 30, 2009

    Kittysafe

Amir laughing his ass off, why was that funny? Because it wasn’t in English! Hilarious and silly, but Amir crushed it, he got those smells quite nicely. Natural palette especially froa first timer who usually we see just smelling “alcohol”.

QOTD: Most expensive bottle, $50 wold I buy it from Amir for twice the price? The entertainment value alone is worth twice the price.

  97. March 30, 2009

    Bill

GV, you owe me 26mins.16secs of my life, of which I wasted watching this ep. What a pair of effete clowns.

  98. March 30, 2009

    Derek F.

Not really sure what to think about this episode, it was kind of funny and unprofessional at the same time…not my favorite episode Gary…sorry :-(

I will admit…the last 30 seconds of the show had me in stitches!!

  99. March 30, 2009

    glennp

Gary- this episode was no good, man. No good. I appreciate the fact that you make an effort to reach out to the college crowd and others that are new to wine and looking for the bargain plays, but when you’ve got people on who’s only m.o. is to futz around the whole time and who left with the same opinion on wine that they came in with- I think you’ve got a failed effort. Sorry Gary- I’m a huge fan of the show but these episodes just make me itch.

  100. March 30, 2009

    Jeff

Gary, Why waste your time with these dorks. They look miserable. Have on people that enjoy wine, not beer guzzling douche bags.

  101. March 30, 2009

    NY Pete

QOTD … you call that humor?

  102. March 30, 2009

    Elias

Sorry GV.. this was bad… obviously there was no chemistry, that Amir guy cannot get out of character, and he was trying to hard to be funny and he became a muppet in the end. If you get past the ear-piercing nasal whine of Amir and lameness of the other guy, the reviews were not too bad, you took on 90 point wines and found them not to be up to par. Just try to stay off the trends, and stick with wine people, or people who are novices but actually want to be educated on wine. That would be interesting.

  103. March 30, 2009

    Zack

I don’t think the regulars to the site get the shtick that jake and amir do. There were both doing the bits they usually do. I really enjoy the characters they play and I got the jokes. I’m sure if Gary wanted them to be out of character he would have asked. I enjoyed it. I am not a regular to winelibrary.com but I am going to subscribe because I love wine and because Gary did a good job even with the satire.

  104. March 30, 2009

    Roberto

This show had some great wines but this is the worest WLTV. These guys had no reason to be on the show. I am all about learning and educating new comers, if they are in to it.

  105. March 30, 2009

    roopes

Jake and Amir fan here… so ace. Everyone dissin on Gary for putting them on the show: he knew what kind of comedians they were and he chose to put them on. They were hilarious as always, and just cause you don’t know that kind of humor doesn’t make it bad. I enjoyed every second that I watched. AND I learned something about wine. Beat that bitches.

  106. March 30, 2009

    sharon

I loved these guys! They were so silly. And Amir is really very funny.
The commentary above is so weirdly uptight and pissy. I guess everyone has their own “palate”.

  107. March 30, 2009

    Joe R.

I agree 100% with Jay’s comment – please don’t take these guys to represent the CKC+ crowd. Probably one of my least favorite eps, but I sincerely hope that it doesn’t stop you from doing value shows with good <$20 wines.

  108. March 30, 2009

    Craven Truffles

Hey gary I thought the show was okay, I thought the last college humor episode was better though. I don’t post very much I watch your show from my zune, But I thought I would let you know what I think. Your are A natural host I like your style. WHERE IS THE ROOT BEER EPISODE?

People seem to be really upset over this episode, Yes it was alittle annoying BUT IT’S NOT LIKE YOU HAD TO PAY FOR IT ;) Relax everybody. Listen to Alittle bob marley “the Road Of Life Is Rocky And You May Stumble, Too. So While You Point Your Finger Someone Is Judging You.”

  109. March 30, 2009

    gomestar

A solid 5 minutes of good wine material. Too bad I had to watch 26 minutes of noise to see it.

    Can’t wait for tomorrow’s episode…

  110. March 30, 2009

    ScottEJ

    The show needed a…..beer bong.

    QOTD: Doesn’t deserve an answer.

  111. March 30, 2009

    Steve Ferrara

Wow!! There’s a lot of hate spewed on the Episode. So the kids stayed in character?? so what? if you listen to Gary you know that you’re probably better off not purchasing any of the wines on today’s show. Also, the bit that Jake and Amir did and do… that is humor to the CKC kids and younger… ever see flight of the concords?? So just because it isn’t your humor doesn’t mean you should bash it. Gary keep doing what your doing.

QOTD: $40. Only if you were selling if for 1/2 off ;-) .

  112. March 30, 2009

    Elias

I watch jake and amir on youtube and I am subscribed to their channel. But in this context they were just annoying.

  113. March 30, 2009

    Mike D'Ag

This just didn’t work. They were in some sort of shtick coma and couldn’t take anything seriously and it made you look like you were working overtime to reign them in. Not a great format for their humor.

  114. March 30, 2009

    Paul

    Gary,

Great episode as always. This one made me laugh for sure especially poor Amir. I actually felt bad for him watching that prank. ;)

QOTD: A $25.00 bottle of EQ Syrah. It’s a fantastic wine, but I would not buy it for twice the price every from Amir… No matter how hard he got pranked. ;)

  115. March 30, 2009

    jtmac

Amazing Show! Jake and Amir is the best comedy show on the internet.
    QOTD- $25/Yes

  116. March 30, 2009

    troutmonster

Wow, Gary, you’re getting some serious crap in the comments for hosting these two on the show. I’ve been a big CH fan for years now, but I did find them pretty annoying. What I did like about the show was that you helped expand the palates of some entry level wine drinkers, and succeeded in doing so…which has been your goal from day one.

    QOTD: 1997 Cristal

  117. March 30, 2009

    Little Jonny

These dudes aren’t funny, especially Amir. The Office is able to pull off awkward-funny, and these guys were no where close to getting it done (I assume that was their shtick). I love that GV tried to save this one by providing a little content and prodding the guests, but this still might be a bottom 10 episode… sorry fellas, maybe next time (do you even drink/enjoy alcoholic beverages?).

    QOTD: $30 for a barolo that I wouldn’t pay $35 for, let alone $60.

  118. March 30, 2009

    M

QOTD: 50ish Gevrey Chambertin and No.

Some day Jake will be into wine. Some day. Seriously I think he will.

  119. March 30, 2009

    castello

Rough show! We waited 3 or four days for this?
Don’t you always get strawberries on the nose and cranberry in the flavor on Rhone reds? The power of suggestion is HUGE! If someone tells me what I smell I can probably find it, but to the novice who can’t smell much it’s a bunch of hooey. Is a ten dollar 90 point wine as good as a hundred dollar 90 point wine?

QOTD 100 bones for 1985 Katheryn Kennedy Cab. Awesome.

  120. March 30, 2009

    Orion S.

So, I tried to watch wltv on itunes today, and the title was correct for this ep, but the actual video was the bacon episode, so I had to go to the website to catch this one.

Now I kind of wish I hadn’t bothered. I get these guys’ humor, but it’s a little on the obnoxious side.

Thanks for the effort in trying to keep the show moving forward, Gary, but this one was a dud.

  121. March 30, 2009

    3robins

Dang, peeps can be harsh!! So Gary went outside the box…wait…doesn’t he always do that? Watching the link of the prank was too funny!!!

I too think that Jake will be into vino some day.

Sorry Amir…I wouldn’t pay you double for my favorite.

  122. March 30, 2009

    rick redekop

    Gary;
DO NOT stop doing shows that YOU want to do. DO NOT succumb to opinion of the majority. Be who you want to be and have guests that interest you. That’s what makes this show, “whether we like it or not”!

  123. March 30, 2009

am i the only one that notice how much Gary kept on touching Amir??

  124. March 30, 2009

I confess to being a lurker for about a year, but this show brought me out.
I Love the show and have learned more than I can express,,,,,,,,,,,,, But!
These goofballs are not funny. Unless stupid is funny then they are a riot.
Please leave the College kids alone. This was strike two. I wouldn’t chance a third time.

  125. March 30, 2009

    Doc P

Disappointing show; must have been tough; Maybe they need a script

50 bucks; and I wouldn’t buy from Amir at half the price
yes I would; but not even 10% more

  126. March 30, 2009

    Jane

I’ve never bought a bottle of wine, but I would definitely buy one from Amir. Jake and Amir are the greatest.

  127. March 30, 2009

    Chris Bartow

Most expensive wine was a 2006 K-Vintners Syrah.

  128. March 30, 2009

    Colin W

    Loved the show Gary!
I already subscribe to WLTV and Jake & Amir and it was great to see you in the same place.
Usually get the show through iTunes, but came to WL today because you’re worth the time.
Thanks for all the time/content. Please, Please, Please, resolve the shipping to WA issues. (other online wine retailers ship here despite the “official” ruling) I really want to taste along at home with the Monthly Packs!

  129. March 30, 2009

    David Benjamin

Sorry, not a huge fan of college humor on your show. The guys try way to hard to be funny and they come across as annoying. You know I always give you my honest feedback.

  130. March 30, 2009

    Jeff S.

They should change the name of their show to elementary school humor. Not funny… Annoying!

  131. March 30, 2009

    Drew

Please don’t resort to this kind of thing Gary. There are plenty of other ways to expand young drinkers to try new options. There has to be young wine clubs, college wine bars etc… out there that will be able to appreciate what your trying to do other than these two d**che bags.

  132. March 30, 2009

    Mr Beast

I realized that I am getting old when I don’t appreciate these guys. Sorry this show didn’t do it for me.

QOTD – deserves Boones Farm Strawberry Hill – Amir really doesn’t care what my answer is.

  133. March 30, 2009

    Brian Teddy

Please, don’t waste our time. This was just too much goofyness for my taste

  134. March 30, 2009

    Rob

Yeah, this show definitely did not do it for me. These guys are clowns, Jake I will give some props, but Amir was a waste of space on that episode, and rather annoying.
QOTD: A Chateneuf du Pape for $38 is the most expensive wine I have ever purchased.

  135. March 30, 2009

    M'Em

I really enjoyed this episode. I am happy to see people can be a little silly and honest because so many people are in the same position, just not knowing really anything about wine. With a little guidance we can all learn to appreciate it.

Whoa!! This is the first time I have ever stopped a WLTV episode inside the first 10 minutes….Jake – I could take, for a little longer than 10 mikes….Amir – he should find out what the definition of “push-up” is and DO SOME!! Ya know, I have a daughter in college – an expensive one, at that, and if I find out she is hanging out with dudes like Amir – she is done!!!!
This was a good episode to insult all of us that really appreciate the GOOD things you do…you need to fire your screeners.
I love what you do and KUTGW, just get back to the other crowd…..

    QOTD…couldn’t wait for that, sorry.

Not the best show but still thanks Gary for making your best effort QOTD haven’t bought any expensive wine and there’s no way i would buy it from that dude.. ohh and bth the video with Amir it’s way to funny….

  142. March 30, 2009

Oh, I forgot to mention – just what is it that the pic of P-BO has captioned from is mouth on the board in the background? Does it say “I’m here to diabolically scheme and destroy all this country stands for and disolve the capitalists, eliminate the gun owners and super-tax the wine drinkers, or am I just paranoid….?

QOTD not sure , sad to say but probally maybe wine that isnt super expensive, the clio i bought for around 40 bones, i loved it, but to spend major $$$, is tough
    Thanks

  146. March 30, 2009

    Amir

    Hey Guys,

    Amir Here.

I’m sorry to those who believe this was a “bottom 10 episode,” or “unwatchably bad.” Please know that the idea to do this episode “in character” was not Gary’s, it was ours! The onus should be put on the guests, not on the host.

To those who place blame on Gary V — I hope you can have some perspective and realize that this is episode 649! SIX HUNDRED AND FORTY NINE! So the idea of Gary taking some risks that result in episodes you deem terrible is not only inevitable but NECESSARY in the sustainability of wine library TV. Besides, he was trying to stay on-game, always steering the conversation back to the wine and his critiques. He never wavered.

There will soon be another episode, one without Jake or myself, and you can get back to loving it as much as you have the previous 648.

We’re just glad to have had the opportunity to experience the thunder show first hand! And for what it’s worth, I know he was able to gain some new, younger fans, and hopefully turn them on to a world that they would normally not be exposed to. So this “experiment” was not entirely in vain.

Besides, I heard some positive feedback — some of which didn’t even come from my mother trying to defend me!

  147. March 30, 2009

    Biznas

This show was not good for one reason, Amir.

  148. March 30, 2009

    Howitzer

Sorry Gary but there was nothing entertaining about this show. This was even worst than the last College Humor episode.
If this was the first time I had seen the show it would have been the last.
QOTD: I didn’t watch long enough to hear what the question was.

  149. March 30, 2009

    BW

QOTD – Not counting bottles on expense account which were jacked up by the restaurants, a 375 ml Quintessa cab (bulked up to 750 ml price, it was most expensive – about 120 bones, as I recall) & although good, I would never do again – it was before I discovered the whole concept of QPR……. and buy it from you Amir …. are you kidding ??? Cut the QPR in half from an already poor QPR deal …. You need to discover the concept of QPR .

Here’s to your future & hoping you make enough so you can enjoy some fine wines. It is truly one of the great experiences in life! Best of luck guys !

  150. March 30, 2009

    Daniel Zana

I’m about 2 minutes in and i gotta say Jake and Amir are great at what they do and you’re fantastic at what you do, but this just doesn’t work. They’re making light of the show and not really enjoying it. Their shtick doesn’t work in this scenario and Amir comes off looking like an idiot. I much preferred the show with Sarah and Streeter. Maybe get Patrick and Dan on there next time.

  151. March 30, 2009

    Jamie

awesome jake and amir rule! of course hardly anybody hear finds in funny, there all snobby fancy pants people, i mean really, who watches a wine webshow? no offense to the makers…

  152. March 30, 2009

    Brian

Personally, I loved the show. I’m a big fan of Jake and Amir’s as well as Gary’s. If you didn’t understand the show or found it to be exceptionally unfunny, I’d invite you to check out jakeandamir.com to learn more of the back story. I didn’t really like it at first, either, but now I’m hooked on their unique “The Office” style humor.

  153. March 30, 2009

Perhaps it is clear to me now why these two kids EDIT and GV does not.

  154. March 30, 2009

    pawncop

It is just possible this is a low point in your process. Everyone has to have one.

Did not enjoy these two gentlemen, and they detracted from the knowledge of the wine.

    QOTD – Who cares?

  155. March 30, 2009

    Yvettew

The first college humor episode was great, but this one was not too hot. Though I still love what you do!

    QOTD: $30, and no.

  156. March 30, 2009

    Justas

It was painful to watch how Gary did his best to keep this show fun, too bad these guys were a joke. They should’ve at least tried to show some effort instead of making completely crappy jokes (i’d give them a go if they were as funny as last video with CH). It even look like Gary was disheartened by disinterest and lack of input guests provided. You did more than we could’ve asked with that company Gary, better luck in next episode!

  157. March 30, 2009

    Zach

For everyone disappointed with Jake and Amir I can understand as this was not their best performance. Their website contains a multitude of hilarious original videos, and in this setting they are not able to really shine. Don’t worry Gary you brought me in as a new viewer it seems like you enjoy having some fun with wine. I recommend checking out http://www.jakeandamir.com/ and exploring some of their videos i promise they are hilarious in their own element.

  158. March 30, 2009

    ATLIENS

Pathetic. Gary, don’t bring yourself down to their level. these guys are Losers.

  159. March 30, 2009

    JPB

First time I’ve watched your show all the way through, Gary. I’m a big fan of Jake and Amir, so when they linked to WLTV I figured it was time for me to watch an episode and give it my full attention. Even with J&A’s antics I learned a ton while enjoying a glass of wine myself. I’ll definitely be coming back to watch more. Thanks!

  160. March 30, 2009

    Ronan Chris Murphy

Not the best show, but props to Gary for trying it. I did not mind all the joking around, I just wish they were a bit more into checking out the wine. Its cool to hear wide ranges of opinions, even from people with no expertise.

  161. March 30, 2009

    Lance

I seriously could not even make it to the end of this episode for the QOTD! Please no more college humor kids, please!

  162. March 30, 2009

    Francesco

You tried Gary, you really tried but these guys are not worth the effort, maybe in a couple of years when their out of diapers. bunch of morons- please Gary, fools like this never again.

  163. March 30, 2009

    cyrildx

In France we would say : “c’est comme donner de la confiture aux cochons”, “it’s like giving marmalade to pigs”. They just don’t get how subtle wine can be.
But i guess since we have to look positively at everything and learn at every occasion, that it is just a great example of a new generation that is not interested by wine and has other interests.
From my point of view, it is sad though. They are missing something great !
Gary, keep going, give a voice to everyone! You are changing the wine world, whether we like it, or NOT !

  164. March 30, 2009

    Brian Smith

I see a lot of people saying that this is a bad show.
    If it is…So what!
I personally didn’t think it was that bad… I enjoyed the past episode with Streeter and Sarah more. I do agree that this one wasn’t LOL funny, but there was some value there. Specifically the Riesling in place of dessert wine.

I see a couple people commenting that you should “get back with the other crowd” and “Please leave the College kids alone”. If I am reading this correctly, only “mature, educated, sophisticated, middle-aged, etc…” people are allowed to enjoy and more importantly LEARN about wine. This goes against everything that WLTV stands for. At least a portion of what it stands for.

Gary I’m 27 and have been watching for the last 6 months.
(have been less of a lurker in the last couple months)
I have learned SO much and I thank you for education and the approach you take. It has truly been MY Honor to get to know you via the Internet.

You are a High Quality Person Gary.

Please don’t stop mixing it up.

Very sweet very young guys; Gary seemed suave, sophisticated, and mature in comparison.
QOTD: Chateau Angelus Saint-Emilion 2005 that I bought from Wine Library for $249.00. We have a Penfolds Grange Shiraz 1998 worth about $350.00, but we didn’t pay that much for it.

  168. March 30, 2009

It’s somewhat sad to realize how many people just DO NOT get it these days. To see comments like “get a job jerk offs” and how someone is hoping their daughter, who is at a “VERY EXPENSIVE COLLEGE OMG TOOT MY OWN HORN SAYING THIS ONLY MAKES ME SOUND LIKE A RICH SNOB,” is worried about their daughter hanging out with guys like Amir…You people are making asses of yourselves. Go to Alexa and compare collegehumor.com to winelibrary.tv. No offense to Gary because he is the man but he doesn’t touch these “jerk offs” when it comes to users. And if you people honestly couldn’t tell, Jake and Amir were in character for the show. Don’t worry, they are a lot smarter than they came off, which is why they are so successful at a young age (What are they? 23 and 26, work as Junior and Senior Editors at a website that ranks in the top 1000 on the web). A lot of people didn’t like this episode, but you don’t need to be disrespectful to these kids in the comments, because let’s be serious, they are killing it more than 99% of you.

  169. March 30, 2009

    Vancouver Rob

Gary still rocks and WLTV will reign supreme, but you can’t even call the two dweebs guests because they didn’t even want to be there. Any Vayniac would kill to be on the show as it would be an honor.

  170. March 30, 2009

    Roger

Gary, apology accepted. You should probably stick with guests who like wine.

I thought you saw this thing circling the drain about half way through. Maybe cutting things short would have been a good idea.

wow, there is a serious lack of a sense of humor among the posters…everyone says they hate Amir, but do they understand that he is PLAYING A CHARACTER? if there is anything Gary has been advocating, it is that wine drinkers need to LIGHTEN UP…apparently there’s a long way to go

HEY GARY – Now you have an answer when people ask you about bad decisions you’ve made in the past! This episode was definitely a bad decision.
The guests in this episode are college dropout quality douchebags and completely ruined this episode.

WHAT AN INSULT to your previous guests who were almost exclusively of much higher caliber. Even Sarah and Streeter while not amazing, managed to show interest and create some spontaneous humor, and didn’t drag their episode through the floor with boredom like these two self-interested dopeheads.

And yes, I’m young enough to know all about their website, CollegeHumor. It’s not just the old people who thought this episode SUCKED.

  175. March 30, 2009

    Nate W

By far one of the most AWKWARD episodes I have ever seen. That was SO hard to watch. I USED to be a fan of College Humor…this was just sad.

However, THANK YOU for exploring cheap wines!!!! Although they didn’t turn out so well….thanks regardless!

I think Gary did a great job with a tough set of guests.

It probably would have worked better if the guests had tried harder to do a wine tasting for the show and focused a little less on trying to be funny (which failed). I felt like the guests didn’t think they were participating in the show, but that they were they only to entertain.

Not trying to be harsh – just calling it like I see it.

  180. March 31, 2009

So, I went back and watched some of their stuff on YouTube and it was pretty funny. In retrospect, this show just doesn’t appear to be their best medium.

Seemed like there was major miscommunication as to whether they were supposed to play their Collegehumor characters or be serious and learn about wine. Hardcore J&A fans will get it, hardcore WLTV fans will not. Being a college kid and fan of the guys, it was painful seeing their humor fall flat on its face. Being somewhat of a wine fanatic, it was great to hear the serious parts, fantastic website, will definitely check out more episodes!

Gary, i wouldn’t be discouraged by all the negative comments. Obviously these people don’t understand that jake and amir were in character for the show. What you did was bring in an almost entire new audience of Jake and Amir fans, some of whom might now become WLTV fans (i became a fan after the first CH episode with streeter and sarah) you did a great job on the show, and i think you can chalk the negative comments up to the misunderstanding from the wino crowd.

  184. March 31, 2009

    Alek

Most regular fans of this site probably don’t know that Amir’s in character and that they always do written sketches, so for them to spend 26 or so minutes of live filming doesn’t translate too well. Sure, it wasn’t all that funny, but it did get me, a teenager, to watch something about wine and want to see a bit more from Gary. I like that he’s tried to bring in some other people, so people should give him credit for that at least.

  185. March 31, 2009

Wow, these guys acted like they didn’t even care to be there…
Gary, I really love the show, and I believe you should continue to try new things with the show, but these guys were tools that seemed like they didn’t care about wine or being there. Its a shame because I would love to be a guest. I am passionate about wine and can deliver way more personality and interest than these guys. And what would make me an interesting guest is that I am still pretty new to wine and would ask questions that maybe some people would also like to know.
    Anyways, enough daydreaming…
Keep up the good work Gary, your part was awesome as always.

    Dear Gary,

I love you man, but this is up there with some of the worst guests of all time including that author that wrote Corkscrewed. I think College Humor, occasionally, can be funny, but after two episodes and four guests later…they know nothing about wine and seem to have even less interest in learning from somebody who could actually teach them a thing or two about it.

HOWEVER I did find a great silver lining in this episode…if there was any doubt before this episode that you are going to make an amazing father to your upcoming son or daughter, it was been put to rest by your EXTREME patience with these two for a seemingly endless 26 minutes.

CH: stick to humor, for your sake.

QOTD: About $100 and Amir if it was coming from you I wouldn’t even pay half.

Blah, I’m a HUGE Jake and Amir fan. I’m also a huge WLTV fan!
(yet I’ve never had a glass of wine in my life.)

HOWEVER, Jake and Amir were definitely out of their element.

WLTV usually knocks it out of the park EVERY episode.
This just didn’t live up to your normal excellent quality.

Gary, as much as I love Jake and Amir, it was really their fault.
How on earth can you blame yourself?

I’m putting my lurker boots back on.

Wine Library fans might not be into this, but Jake and Amir fans will love it. I was a J&A guy before I got into WLTV, so I loved this episode.

I understand why those of you who are a fan of THIS particular show might not like the Jake and Amir aspect. Good job Gary, Jake…and I guess Amir

Would’ve been better to stay true to the Jers and have the Harold and Kumar actors on the show (and/or Neil Patrick Harris).

Having comedy folks on the show is OK, but the world is full of people at parties who take a sniff and make a wine joke about what they’re smelling. On the other hand, Daniel Rogov is by far the funniest guest you’ve hosted.

    hmm
As a very long and tiring day has already left me a little on the cranky side, I’m not sure I’d find much of anything humorous at the moment, so I’m not going to presume to pass judgement on this episode.

I don’t get the meanness of most of the posts, though (pro or con). Reading them not only didn’t add anything to my day, for a change, I think it may even have detracted…

Gary, I agree when you said “A very disappointing show.” I gotta give you credit for trying, especially to introduce people to wine. But these College Humor episodes are 0/2. I much preferred when you did AJ’s 21st birthday episode- you’ve got to have at least a little respect for the wine, & these guys didn’t. I’ve never seen College Humor & after this probably never will, I hope there is no more College Humor WLTV in the future. This was easily my least favorite show of the 100+ I’ve seen.

As a CKC myself, this just isn’t college. I’d love to come out to NJ & do a show as an authentic college student. We’re in college to learn. The guests just acted stupid and didn’t care. You’ve got to be passionate about what you’re going to college for, it’s not just drunk-party-stoned central, which is how these guys came across.

QOTD: Orin Swift “The Prisoner” ‘07 ($36), & no, I’d rather support my local wine store owner that I know personally & respect, and for market price.

Haha. This is funny. It seems like most of the people posting on here (not to mention Gary) have no idea about the Jake and Amir characters. This is very funny. Me, as a Jake and Amir fan, find this Gary gentleman pretty obnoxious.

    Bathus -- Amateur Wine Philosopher

In every life there comes that moment when you realize that you just don’t “click” as “one of the gang” with the youngsters anymore.

If you’re lucky, that revelation comes when you are no older than thirty-five or forty, otherwise the discovery is all the more irritating and embarrassing for having been delayed–because “There’s No Fool Like an Old Fool Who’s Trying to Be Cool.” Once you get over the slightly embarrassed irritation, or irritating embarrassment, then the awkward experience does seem funny, even though the jokes is on oneself, so to speak.

Worry not, GEEVEE, pretty soon the only youngster you’ll care that much about relating to will be one who’s wearing diapers. And he (or she) will laugh at all your silly jokes and think you hung the moon, and the stars, and everything else, too.

Man, oh, man, Gary, I do hope you’re wrong about the Pesquie Terrasses–I just bought a half a case the other day!

QOTD: In 2006, for my 50th B-day, I spent something like a hundred bucks on a 1997 Brunello. Because we were in Italy celebrating my first half a century, it seemed like the right thing to do, and it was worth every penny, but that’s way, way, way, way, way above what I usually spend per bottle. Amir, if you had been there in that wine shop that day, I probably would have bought the bottle from you–why not–but definitely not for twice the regular price. You ain’t that cute, and I don’t like to over-pay for my wine!

GV, I never thought I would bring the hate in the comments section, but geez what a pointless waste of time this episode was.

I guess the Vaniacs want to expand their wine palate, but not their humour palate… Come on, lighten up. OK, so it wasn’t the best WLTV of all time – get over it. From the comments I’ve read, you’d think these people had dropped ten bucks to watch the episode and then had a cheese grater rubbed over their face instead… Sigh. And Gary, you did yeoman’s work trying to save the episode – you’re way too tough on yourself: no apology required.

Gary obviously likes to talk to the group at Collegehumor. Hell, Gary has responded to more comments on the Jake and Amir website then his own. If you didn’t like these two, then watch one of the other 648 episodes. Don’t be surprised if Gary does another one with these two.

I’m glad I’m in the majority of hating this episode! I almost couldn’t finish it, except I actually wanted to know what Gary thought about the wines. These guys drove me absolutely nuts. I’m only 25 and did not find anything humorous about these guys. How annoying to listen to.

Better luck next time Gary! I’m glad you try to spice up the show and always try new types of guests. I won’t hold this one against ya.

hi gary–trying to branch out to the young crowd here? I am a huge fan of guests in general, but wine knowledge aside, I dont think these guys have enough in the brains dept. to have graduated any college at all.

These guys are bad reps for college humor–I understand how it could take 9+hrs of footage to get a funny 1min clip from them.

P.S. even though the wines didnt show well–the norton and pesquie are widely available, affordable, and with big scores, so I appreciate getting another opinion on them.

Gary, I will spare you having to read another negative post about the guests as I agree with most of the people here in my dislike of them.

I feel like the most important thing here is… After shooting this episode did you think “Oh man this is not going to go over well with the fans.” or were you really excited with it and happy? For the future direction of WLTV I hope you were expecting this kind of response from your fans because if you were surprised that everyone disliked it so much then that is a bigger issue.

Gary you are freaking awesome! Keep making wine fun and accessible to everyone.

Gary, sorry to say this, but big fail for the 2nd time. I felt sorry for you doing this show, I really did.

Leave the College Humor fan base alone. You’re associating your brand with the wrong image. CH is good at what it does. It’s a hot ticket while you’re in College. But everyone knows that as soon as you graduate and face the real world, you forget all about that sort of silliness in a flash…

The few hundred fans you’ll pull in from the CH crowd won’t offset the loss of respect and viewership of your loyal fan base. There has to be a better niche than CH to get more eyeballs to WLTV.

Another thought: Gary, you know that your own confidence to be who you are is one of the great strengths of WLTV, second only to your wine expertise. Your own genuine enthusiasm and self-confidence becomes even clearer the rare times you have guests who aren’t comfortable being themselves and with their own strengths and weaknesses.

Rokov was hilarious because he was confident that he could say anything and still be himself. The College Humor folks aren’t comfortable with themselves; it would be OK if they were actually high and dumb, but instead they’re playing dumb, playing high — which seems to be the opposite of your energy and your philosophy of owning your own personality. Get some dorky but friendly/genuine college kids on the show to talk about wine, and I promise, really, that it’ll be a funnier and more entertaining (and more viral) show.

hey gary, first time posting here. not a fan of the episode. but i went to check out jakeandamir.com. they’re funny. i could see why you would like them. i like their skits, a lot funnier than many network shows lately. i felt these guys are really intelligent in real life but they came out on your show either as half baked characters or just not interested in wine or even learning something about it.

kudos to you for trying to teach the kids about wine and keeping your cool.

Gary, there was nothing you could do to cover for those two guests. They phoned it in and didn’t seem to give a damn about your show. You were excellent as usual. Your analysis was solid. You were not the problem, so please don’t apologize. You do a great job not only of describing and rating the wines, but also of inspiring the Vayniacs to expand their palate — all with a very entertaining style. Keep up the great work!!

  214. March 31, 2009

    jmjm

Love your show Gary, but it looks like you were working really hard to salvage this episode.

I think the main reasons your fans watch you is for your enthusiasm and inquisitiveness, so when guests show neither it doesn’t appeal. I have never watched these two guys on College Humor, but in the context of this episode they were terrible. Apathy and disengagement might be their schtick (or their characters’ schticks) and maybe it’s hysterical when they are in their element, but definitely not on wltv.

I’ve watched hundreds of your videos Gary and will continue to — Please don’t let the criticisms discourage you, they aren’t directed at you anyway.

I’m not much of a wine drinker myself, so I think episodes where you bring in wines that would appeal to developing palates especially interesting. Other people have cited the episode with AJ. If the guest is interesting in learning, it goes a long way.

My favourite guest was Nicolas Joly, the biodynamics guy. I’m so glad that show was a multi-parter!

    Keep up the good work.

I thought the video was pretty funny. If you’ve ever seen any Jake and Amir episodes and have seen interviews, you’d see that they are playing their characters. Personally, I found this funny and will probably frequent this site more often but some of you people leaving comments really need to get the sticks out of butts, sheesh.

    Gary,
Your cross-marketing idea may have backfired with your steady viewers, but it was certainly successful in gaining entrance to a new audience.
I followed this link from Jake & Amir’s blog, which I am subscribed to. I’m 28, an MBA student, and I love wines, but am a novice at best when it comes to wine knowledge.

Last weekend, my husband and I had an amazing seven course dinner that was personally paired with a flight of wine by the wine captain (yes, I googled that term). As we were guessing the nose, forwards, and finishes and learning about concepts like wine that never touches wood so that you can taste the soil the grapes grew in… I said to my husband, “I want to become a wine aficionado.” I even asked the wine captain how he got started. He recommended reading and I now have on my list “The Wines and Domaines of France” by Clive Coates and “The Wines of Burgundy” by Anthony Hanson.

My point is that you have hit the nail on the head, in my opinion, by inviting a young and popular blog team on your show. The only thing I’m disappointed in is how stuffy your general audience seems. Frankly, while you are trying to break down barriers, they are doing a very good job of keeping them up!

Yes, this episode was a little overpowering with the wine lesson plus Jake & Amir’s personalities. But your viewers should know that Jake & Amir were completely “in character” for this. The fact that they took them seriously is a sign that they may need to loosen up a bit (or have some more wine).

Thanks for trying something new. You’ve just gained a new fan… and inspired a fellow wine lover to learn more.

Gary V, there is no need for you to apologise for ANYTHING. It was worth a shot and just did not work out. No reflection on you. You were as good as ever and any true fan of the show will see that. It has got me posting comments and I intend to continue to do so. Your show is awesome GV. This episode did not work but so what. WLTV is class and its all down to you dude.

  219. March 31, 2009

    Anna

Oh my god, this is negative. I watched this because I am a fan of Jake and Amir themrelves, and Collegehumor, and I thought this was really funny. But it seems that people who watch this show regularly and are interested in the wines and such, don’t like it at all. I’m sure not everybody likes the kind of humour that Jake and Amir and Collegehumor do, but also maybe you need to be familiar with them (and like them) before this to appreciate it… they are obviously (especially Amir) in their characters from Jake and Amir most of the time. That’s the whole point. Amir is really stupid. But if you don’t know them, it may be kind of hard to appreciate. But anyway, I liked the show!

  220. March 31, 2009

wow, I must say I love you show but reading these comments have me completely laughing my a$s off. They are playing characters…do you think if he only ate chicken nuggets he would even be around? I mean calm down ppl this is a sad day in both comedy history and in your shows history. How ppl can so completely miss the mark. Personally I thought the show wasn’t the best but they obviously didn’t know anything and if you expected more then skip this episode plain and simple.

  222. March 31, 2009

    deft

…and honestly if you thought their humour was too “college” then you have never heard of the Marx brothers or Abbott and Costello – As they are very clearing playing Straight man (Abbott/Jake) bumbling idiot (Costello/Amir) not that they’re anywhere close to that level but it seemed fairly obvious to me

  223. March 31, 2009

    Nathan

It’s pretty obvious by the comments, GV watchers loved GV, and CH watchers loved CH.

So apparently most Jake and Amir watchers find GV a little different then what they usually watch. And Gary watchers were clearly not used to seeing Jake and Amir. Its sad that they can’t appreciate the humor. And im sure GV watchers think its sad that most of us didnt appreciate GV.

I am a huge Jake and Amir fan, and I must say it took a good 10 mins to get used to Gary. Just because he is so different then they are in his approach and mannerism. At the end, I see he is just a regular guy a little more excited about wine then I am. Maybe alot more excited. To each his own.

Nice try on both sides… win some lose some.

Not sure how many Vayniacs have ever provided two comments with regards to one episode, but I feel one is necessary in light of my earlier message – just felt guilty.

Over the years we Vayniacs have been graced with over 600 episodes of highly entertaining and incredibly informative episodes of WLTV – and lets not forget the most important point of all; its all been for FREE!

I think we owe a big apology to Gary, and to put things into perspective; I mean he hasnt just killed a man for christ sake or caused the recent great depression – well maybe just a slight depression ;)

    We apologise….sorry

    Was Amir stoned?

Worth a shot Gary but probably should have scrapped the episode when it didn’t work out! Amir clearly doesn’t give a rats about you or the show! His actions even seemed to be embarrassing Jake… I hate that I’m in college and people might think I’m like that!

Anyway hope you bounce back Gary in fact I know you will… :)

  226. March 31, 2009

    Justin H

I’ve only been watching the show for awhile, and just getting into wine. I am one of these college kids all you above seem to hate that knows little about the wine world. I have seen jake and amir before, and they act just like they do in the show so I thought that was quite funny. The thing I really liked about this episode was that it was nice to see people around the same level of wine knowledge as me. I couldn’t have done much better…well better than amir, but thats not saying much. Great job Gary.

  227. March 31, 2009

    Veiwer

Jake and Amir were just doing their shtick that they do for college humor and their website. The host simply didn’t understand that and couldn’t play along it seemed. This audience is just filled with people who have no idea about pop culture.
The fans of this show would have the same opinion if they saw Yakov Smirnoff on the show without any prior knowledge to his comedy style. And if you, as a host, didn’t actually care about that style and just wanted to expand your audience then that show would be a flop also.

  228. March 31, 2009

I’m not sure what all the complaints here are about, great execution by gary, good chemistry with the guests, and even educational. The fact that both these guys now appreciate Riesling just goes to show the power of GV. Open your minds Vayniacs, this is how most of America sees wine right now. This is our target audience.

QOTD: probably a sylvain bailly sancerre for around 20 bones. I only gamble on wines over CKC price points from the Loire, haven’t been disappointed yet, red or white.

After reading the article entitled ‘Has Wine Library TV jumped the Shark’ on http://www.drinksareonme.net, I have just left the following comment intended for the author and website creator; a Mr Dale Cruse. Though Im not sure if it will be published, I invite all Vayniacs to express their disatisfaction towards him.

“Following on from the comment I have just added on WLTV – we really need to put this episode into perspective.

For the hundreds of great episodes that Gary has done over the years I find Dale’s one damming comment intended to place the programme on the funeral pyre deeply sadening.

For Dale. Next time you are scrolling Wikipedia in search of some clever witted phrase to degrade your subject matter, may I suggest you take a quick peek at the word ‘Invidiousness’ – as I believe you are showing signs of it!”

to many jokes this is the third time that i stop viewing a show after the first 3 minutes. I like watching guest that have some knowledge to share not two people joking around.

It was hard to tell whether these guys were acting or if that was their real personality? But the content was great as usual and if wine is gonna make it big in the US this is the generation that it is has to appeal to. Good job at bringing in a “different” type of guest. Like Gary says, its all about trying new stuff.

Please realise, people, that Amir is in character. He is supposed to be the most stupid person on the face of the earth.

Amir and Jake are in character for the vast majority of the video. Far from being the kind of idiotic college kids that some have assumed they are, a good deal of their humour is derived from mocking this very idiocy. Those who failed to realise this probably need to pull their nose out of a wine glass for just a moment and take a quick look at the world around them. Amir and Jake obviously aren’t wine experts so I can understand the backlash but to be fair, they do seem almost apologetic when pressed briefly out of character and asked for real opinions on the wine – it obviously isn’t something they are particularly knowledgeable about.

I agree that the show didn’t really work, there wasn’t much conversation about the wine, which has obviously disappointed a lot of people. At the same time, I also imagine a lot of Jake and Amir fans were also disappointed that the duo weren’t given much chance to riff off each other, although given the format of the show that’s perfectly understandable. Nevertheless, the video was still enjoyable enough, which brings me meandering slowly towards my point. This is the first wine library video I’ve seen and it was as a result of being a fan of Amir and Jake. It’s surely a good idea to do a few shows like this as it will help to bring in a different audience and maybe encourage a different type of person to become interested in wine. Although perhaps that is exactly what some of you are worried about. The snobbery that is widely (and often incorrectly) associated with wine drinkers has all too often seeped through in the comments here, a recent example being mikek: ‘QOTD: … bag my groceries, moron’. It is this kind of aggressive snobbery that continues to make the whole world of wine seem so inaccessible to many people (myself included), and keeps people’s ‘wine self-esteem’ low. To those of you who stooped this low: congratulations on further propagating the stereotype.

Anyway, I think the show was a good idea and maybe this show will stimulate some interest in wine in previously untapped areas. That, surely, was its ultimate goal and that should be applauded. It is wonderful to see anyone who is enthusiastic about their interests and trying to share it with as many other people as possible. I can understand (if not wholly agree with) the criticism of its execution, but the idea itself was laudable.

    Snarf

Maybe I’m just old, but these guys are NOT funny. Just lots of senseless babble to hear themselves talk, ESPECIALLY Amir. Get a life, losers!

  239. March 31, 2009

    Kayde

Why is everybody taking this video so seriously. Yea these guys are acting, if you watch their episodes a lot you would understand the whole flow of this episode.

Jake and Amir probably weren’t the best people to have on the show for real wine critics but it’s good to have a joke from time to time. Plus this site probably just got an extra 50k hits from this video being on here as its linked on Jake and Amir’s website and various other blogs.

  240. March 31, 2009

    Ben

By the way, Gary seems to be getting some equally unfair criticism on the Jake and Amir site. I thought that Gary did a good job of trying to find the balance between indulging his guests and talking about wine. It was just always likely to be difficult in this particular format. Also, like I said, it is always endearing to see someone trying to share their passion for something. Passion is clearly something Gary has in droves and I think that’s a brilliant thing.

    hey gary V,

i think that this was funny show, but you really needed to get the guys to beer bomb the rest of the content in the large glass bucket. then sink a bong or two and see what happens(”Geeks Go Wild”).

so all in all, i didnt think it was a bad show, you just didnt need to adjust for the two “Dudes” on the show!

    take it easy GV

I commend the effort Gary, but this episode did nothing for your show. However, it may have won College Humor a few new viewers–if you’re into juvenile, wise-guy humor. In that genre, Amir was quite funny at times! As a Wine Library episode, though, this one was scraping the bottom. Sorry. I did find your opinion of the Norton Malbec to be right on. I was disappointed with that one, too.

QOTD: The highest priced wine I purchased was a Champagne, but I’d rather not divulge more. However, it begins with a K and ends with a G, and it was a Rose.

  245. March 31, 2009

    MattUD

Hey Gary, I can see where others are coming from in their displeasure with the episode. As someone who has watched college humor and the Amir/Streeter prank war, I pretty much expected the show to turn out as it did. Obviously it wasn’t the best in terms of wine knowledge, but was a change of pace and that never hurts anyone.

  246. March 31, 2009

    life's too short

Haven’t watched an episode in a while, and decided to check this out. Wow. Puerile New Millennium version of slightly less intelligent Beavis and Butthead duo. It’s fine to branch out, of course, but at least your previous guests have been entertaining. These guys just ain’t funny. A heh. Heh. Uh.

I tried to keep an open mind when watching this episode because I love the College Humor crew. I appreciate trying to mix it up with some humor, but review some energy drinks or malt liquor next time. They might take more interest in it.

I wish Amir would have come out of character a bit more, I think it would have made the discussion better. That said, I think this was a Great episode. Jake and Amir do get tons of hits to their own site each day, from a demographic that may not be aware of what Gary is doing. And doing the show with these two can really work to increase the viewer base of WLTV.

  251. March 31, 2009

    MKH

This was not a good episode. It got better when Jake actually tried to be interested in wine, which is the point of the show, to open peoples minds to what wine is all about, but then Amir would just crush that with a “joke.” News to Amir, you dont’ have to try to be funning with everything you say. Not to mention he’s not funny. Hope this isnt’ a trend. I love guest, but this was too far.

  252. March 31, 2009

    Teresa Ramoa

I don’t understand why most of the people are so uncomfortable with this episode. Jake and Amir have their quote of the audience in their kind of humor and I think this was an interesting show, from the point of view of 2 people who don’t know much about anything about wine but were a little educated as far as they can be trying 3 different wines at once and being who they normally are. Remembering Gary’s slogan about changing the wine world, I think this is pretty much about that. And besides I think its very healthy to diversified the audience in a show like this, which doesn’t have to present only wine experts, but target an audience from A to Z.
I really had a good time watching this one.

  253. March 31, 2009

    EP

Gary – This is probably one of the worst episodes I have tried to watch. I actually couldn’t get through it all. It’s cool you are bringing other individuals on your program, but they have to either like wine, or want to like wine. My only suggestion, is get back to basics. Do what you do best, and what got you to your “star” status that you have today.

  254. March 31, 2009

Gary, I’m all for having comedians on the show…when they’re funny. I’m all for having wine beginners on the show…when they’re willing to learn. I’m all for parodying the wine judging system…when it’s justified. WLTV, after 600+ episodes, is worthy of more.

  256. March 31, 2009

    Dana Fosburgh

Funniest friggin’show I’ve seen yet. These guys are hilarious and I don’t know how you made it through the show without spitting wine out of your nose. I’m thinking these guys will be the last two people to jump on the wine bandwagon.Funny, funny stuff. You rock!

  257. March 31, 2009

    Zino

Gary, I just don’t understand why you have these guys on the show ? Do you think they’re funny ? I looked at the basketball prank and that was ok, but the sketches I saw on their website are not funny, just juvenile and self-indulgent. If you have any of these guys on again, you’ll get a better response if you have the alcohol extracted from the wine and let them taste that instead. They will appreciate that.

  258. March 31, 2009

    Annoying.

  259. March 31, 2009

I’m sorry but what a wasted opportunity. I was ambivalent about the last College Humor show, but at least they took it somewhat seriously. These two are far to convinced that they are funny and could not be more wrong.

8 minutes in and I want to slam Amir’s face off that table. Hoping you guys are going to sub him out for someone else in the CH office. Got my fingers crossed!
How stoned is he?? He’s making me more angrier by the minute.
Just answer a question you smart ass! Wise ass punk! If you were here, I would split your flucking head open!!
Why are you even there!? What was the purpose of you doing this??
I have never seen someone try so hard to be funny and fail. Amir, you are dead to me!
Jake, big fan. Nice work on the show.
Huge CH fan by the way. Have had it bookmarked for years.
QOTD1: Not answering that. Hate Amir. Stupid question.
    QOTD2: I agree with Jake.
Strange, I really want to pound Amir’s face off that table over and over and over again.

  261. March 31, 2009

    MaRc

    Hey GV…
i’m sorry to say, but these guys are really childish and annoying. Somehow it just spoils wine enjoyment and the mood for great wines. It’ll be more like a ‘pop n pour’ thing with these people. However, i do understand that you’re also expanding your ‘contacts’ through them. So, good on ya dude but unfortunately, they’re just not my kind of click.

QOTD: cant remember now which wine was the most expensive…Palmer? Lynch Bages? prob one of those from a good vintage but what’s more important (after paying hefty prices) would be the company we’re with to fully enjoy and appreciate the wine! And these are one of those that I have truly enjoyed.
    Oh, prob a 2001 Tignanello!
Lastly, sorry Amir…wouldnt buy my favourite wine from you for twice the price or half the price, as I’m afraid that the wine may not be properly handled/ stored under your care.

This episode is basically unwatchable, thanks to the horrible guests (Amir). I don’t necessarily want pretentiousness in wine, but leave the stupid humor for college humor. At least make an attempt at tasting wine.

    Carlene

I admire your patience Gary and your ability to stay on track. I was cracking up. Good stuff. Remember people, wine is FUN

  267. March 31, 2009

    Anthony

    I thought this was great!

I think people lack an understanding of Amir. For starters he is putting on an act. Secondly, he has developed over time through the skits. Even to watch a few of the recent skits and judge from there is a little premature. It’s humor that grows on you the more you open up to it.

As far as wine goes. I am an entry level wine fan with quiet a few bottles tasted(or drunk). I thought this video was a perfect lead in for people of similar experience. Which tends to be a good chunk of the college university crowd. (collegehumor’s crowd)

  268. March 31, 2009

    Scottie P

This episode helps to add balance to the guest list. I didn’t find them that funny, but it didn’t bother me either. It’s fun to watch non-wine people on the show too.

Hello, wine enjoyers. I’d just like to say that Jake and Amir are actually in character right now and ACTING. Thats not actually how Amir is. He’s playing the character he plays in the “Jake and Amir” sketch comedy skits he does with Jake on http://www.jakeandamir.com so chill out. It’s a joke. Supposed to be funny. Good work, to Jake and Amir!! :) and this Gary guy handled them well.

does anyone else taste cocoa puffs on the back end?

Thoise 2 smoke way to much weed its obvious…I think they try to hard to be funny and do a poor job of it…Hopefully thats the last we see of them on your show…No thunder was brought in that episode….Gary your still the man though…

  274. March 31, 2009

    Garry M.

I think that your next guests should be from the local kindergarten.
They wouldn’t be any less informed… or childish.
Really, who cares what a couple of non-wine drinkers who are still
trying to figure out what they want to do when they grow up think?

  275. March 31, 2009

Your show is losing appeal, content rarely brings the thunder for the passionate wine peps. Maybe if you had filmed for 9 hours the college humor boys could have said something funny or maybe even entertaining. I am a college student and dont feel the need to act like a jackass.

Tip for Gary, best to follow this disappointing effort with a focused and informational show

  279. March 31, 2009

I liked it. I got into winelibrary tv because of the first college humor episode so its fun to go and see another installment. I will agree that I was kind of hoping for them to take it a little more seriously but I had fun and thats all that counts. I would like to see a college humor and Bleep Bloop mesh were you guys taste wine than get a little drunk, THan review video games. that would be a fun episode!

    Thanks Gary

The only people who didn’t find this or J&A funny were just pompous morons who don’t have a sense of humor. This was the first WLTV episode i’ve ever seen and i’ll be seeing a lot more of it thanks to seeing the link on J&A’s site!

It’s a shame some people don’t understand J&A’s characters and for those who hate on them……hundreds of thousands of viewers can’t be wrong!

    Straight up.

Sorry GV but this show BLEW monkey chunks, nothing you could have done better. I honestly was cringing at times and felt bad for you having to endure it. Amir is a douchebag and unwatchable. I get that he’s trying to be funny and wasn’t, but come on maybe take it a LITTLE more seriously!

Less of them and more of you makes for a better show!

Two of the biggest jerk offs I’ve ever seen in my life. Gary, I know you were thinking WTF am I doing with these two. The episode was unbearable. If this was any indication what our future college grads are like, we are in big trouble.

I found the posting from Amir very well written and heartfelt, and kinda felt bad…(except for where I called Jancis Robinson awkward, I still think that) Funny enough, this marks the most comments I’ve ever read.

I was distracted by the guests. GV must have been as well. I always pan down to preview the wines before I start the episode and was happy to see I had tried and enjoyed all three wines in the past. I really liked the two bottles of Chateau Pesquie that I picked up last fall. GV, give it another try without the distraction. I’m going to give it another try this weekend.

    GV,

I couldn’t even watch to the end of this show, man. I know you meant well, but these guys are buffoons – wine is supposed to be fun, but I also watch this show to learn. The College Humor guys did nothing to help that process for me. Sorry, I give this show a pazzzzzzzz with 8 z’s.

  288. March 31, 2009

I feel for you GV, truly tough to watch. So I have a QOTD: What do you call a guy that is between Beavis and Butthead?? the back End…Oh Just a little humor on par with those guys.

  291. March 31, 2009

    MKH

Alright, after reading all these comments I find it hilarious of two groups of people. The people who are taking their dislike of Amir and Jake so far it’s just silly. Yeah, i didn’t think it was funny, and I understand the type of humore they try, just does nto work in this situation and overall not the kinda of humor I like, but hey, more power to them for finding a nitch, just hope they stay away from WLTV in the future. The other group is accusing everyone who didn’t like it of being stupid and not understanding what they are doing. Guess what, many people exactly understand what they are doing, like myself, but just don’t find it funny in any way. I like Gary trying to reach out to younger crowd, and a younger crowd that isn’t already into wine. That’s what he wants to do, reach out to new wine drinkers, just think there is a better way to do it. Hope the next episode is better, but one bad show does not ruin WLTV.

  292. March 31, 2009

    tcatjo

I am a lurker and don’t usually leave a comment BUT-I hate to see the college guys getting slammed so hard. I didn’t really love the episode either but they are just kids trying to be funny and have a good time. The hate comments with violent tendencies are a little scary. I love WLTV and will continue watching, college kids or not. I guess the hardest part was trying to hear GV over the mumbling. Keep up the good work Gary-I’ll still be lurking! And by the way, you sure tapped into something as the comments are skyrocketing-your intention maybe?

  293. March 31, 2009

Yeah I’ve been watching for over a year now and I’m really hoping never to see another college humor show again. I just want to take both of those guys and shove them into a wood-chipper with a huge grin on my face knowing that I just made the world a little bit better. I’m twenty one and I have a better perspective on life than they will ever have because they are too busy being superficial and “quirky.” May be somebody should force them to smoke their beloved pot, tie them down with their eyelids kept open, make them watch four hours of bill hicks stand up, and then hand them a gun at the end so that they can take care of it themselves.

  295. March 31, 2009

Didn’t hate it… it’s just a different kind of humor than what we are all used to here on WLTV. But I did like the Other College Humor guys you had on before better.
I dodn’t thinkI’d buy any wine for twice the price I’ve paid before… unless of course it was “redonkulous”ly awesome and I couldn’t get it anywhere else… or it was table service at a club in Vegas….

  296. March 31, 2009

    blah

i watched this as a jake and amir fan and enjoyed it. i was gonna watch some more episodes but after reading the comments i don’t really want to anymore, you all seem to hate that a couple light hearted guys who don’t like wine were on the show and are ripping them for it.
and no, they are not high at all, idiots.

  297. March 31, 2009

    Elias

I have read most of the comments, GVs apology and Amir’s post as well. Maybe us Vayniaks that did not like this episode got a bit out of hand (me too…)

Gary, don’t stop taking risks like that. It was unfortunate that the whole thing did not click for some reason, but I love the fact that you diversify and keep us and yourself on our toes. If you just talked about wine, had wine people, and were sterile and clinical as all other wine blogs and shows, well… then you would not be Gary Vay-ner-chuck, by another wine guy…

You got me into wine because of your casual, goofy style, I was always put off wine because of the pretentiousness and seriousness that came with it, and here comes a guy talking about wrestling, football shouting, laughing, goofying around, but in the end delivering amazing wine knowledge and spot on reviews. Most of all, opening our eyes to wines from any region of the world, diversifying our palates.

Yeap, this episode was a miss in my mind, but still risks like that should be taken, please don’t become another sterile wine-reviewer…

    Keep it up GV!

  298. March 31, 2009

    Elias

Oh, and all us that hated Amir, we DO understand he was in character, it was just that this character did not sit well with the show, did not click with GV, and was disruptive in the reviewing process.

That’s a reply to those people saying “Amir was in character, he is not like that in real life!”

  299. March 31, 2009

    GolfTurtle

WTF?…WTF? Did they taste wine on this show today? Was Gary Vee there?
Was this WLTV? I’m confused, so I’ll go watch some archived episodes now to restore my understanding of why I tune into this on a daily basis. I’m sorry Gar, I think you’ll see if you search my tweets & ect that I am a HUGE fan of you as an entreprenuer, a brand, a motivational person, ect, ect..however it would not be cool if I wasn’t honest in my Reply to this epp. I didnt like it, wasn’t “WINE” enough for me. Not saying there’s not an audience for this out there, as a matter of fact I’m sure many people really enjoyed this. Bottom of my list for repeat viewings though. Looking forward to you reading some comments next episode, and rebounding with the thunder.

I’m a long time watcher… I have never felt moved to post a comment before this terrible ep. Both the videos i have seen with college humor people are trash imo. I watch this show to learn. I don’t watch this show to see douche bags destroy the integrity and value of wine.

  302. March 31, 2009

Ok…watched it again..WTF? Still..WTF? Can we please get back to the old school style. Honest to God I get it, I understand the intentions, however I REALLY DOUBT any (maybe 3) of the new CK fan viewers that linked over and watched are gonna order anything from WL. I have to be honest (again) I still gotta say I can appreciate the “going out on the limb” and taking what I’m quite certain you knew was gonna be a major risk for the sake of growing your viewership and potentially your business. I dont have a “pair” big enough to have taken that risk. That’s why you’re OG Gary Vee and I’m just the GolfTurtle. MOTT! link up the next epp so we can move on and not talk about this anymore.

Coming from someone who knows the CollegeHumor site fairly well, but also recognizes awkward shit when i see it, i say this: this was an utter failure. The original material on their site is occasionally funny, such as this skit about a “Man-Baby:” http://www.collegehumor.com/video:1904488 . It is silly, but you have to admit, a lot funnier than jake and amir on this episode of wine tv.

Jake and Amir is borderline annoying to begin with, but when coupled with a semi-serious show like this, it fails miserably. Asking a character like Amir to focus on a tangible subject like wine appreciation was the biggest mistake. someone should have realized this before they shot this awkward mess.

I have to say that I do know a few people in college who have very similar reactions to wine. It can be fun, but also frustrating, to introduce them to something new.

Man! I’ve watched quite a few WLTV episodes and though this one wasn’t one of the best, I still enjoyed it. Too many people seem to really have no sense of humor about wine or the show to understand that these guest are playing characters from their web show “Jake and Amir”. Though Amir does get a bit annoying on their show I thought he was very funny on this episode in a quirky kind of way.

Gary, don’t let the haters get you down. You do an awesome job!

QOTD: Probably about $100 as a gift for my dad (big time wine drinker)

    Jake in NC

All in all a boring show. I’m not usually a fan of the college humor folks, at least from my limited experience with their content that ends up on the front-page of Digg. Like (in my opinion) most of the funny or die sketches, I just find their content to often sound funny in the title but then let me down when I actually click it- I much prefer the onion, or even cracked, but that’s me.

In character or not, Amir’s schtick just didn’t play that well. It was a little bit too “Joaquin Phoenix on David Letterman”-esque, which I leave people to interpret however they want. On the upside, I think Amir’s only 25 or 26, so maybe he still has time to hone his routine a bit more?

Lastly, and maybe it’s a name bias on my part, but I found Jake to be at least tolerable. He wasn’t great, but he didn’t stink up the room like Amir did.

Keep up the good work Gary, and even though I had a tough time NOT clicking off to something else during this episode, I agree that you should keep mixing it up. I first found your site through digg, and I’m sure there are some people who frequent college humor and will get into your vibe as a result.

Oh, and for what it’s worth to the College Humor people, I do like your stuff at bustedtees sometimes.

“YOU KIDS GET OFF MY LAWN!!!!” yell all the crusty old farts who post comments. Holy crap. You people should ask for your money back for having to watch the show. pff

I actually thought it was pretty funny and I was not expecting to. I win!!

Gary did a nice job keeping the show mostly on track. It could have been sooooo much worse.

QOTD: $68 Malbec. twice the price? I WISH restaurants only charged twice the price. so, yes. If Amir was a restaurant, I would pay twice the price. maybe he is – i dunno.

    Hahaha, “Why are you Amir”?

This was another very funny tie-in of the CH Kids, I can’t wait for another!

And for those snobbish, “mature” fans of Gary’s show who have professed their extreme hatred of Jake & Amir’s presence on this episode, just realize that Gary is making a very smart move here by bringing in a much broader audience that wouldn’t normally view anything on Wine Library.

And for the record, I highly doubt that they were high. If they were, hell, that’s just an excellent way to appreciate a drink that many find difficult to enjoy.

It’s almost hilarious how insulting a lot of these posters are acting. For one do you not realize how many new ppl have just found this bc of Jake and Amir. I guess that never dawned on you. Any publicity is good publicity. Personally I thought they were very funny.

Pretty sad when the so-called “immature college crowd” is showing a lot more class then almost all of the pretentious “mature wine crowd”. Get over yourself and learn to laugh a little. Life will be a lot better :)

To neutron212 you’re making fun of college kids when you can’t even form a grammatically correct sentence. Dyslexic preschoolers can write better than you. I think the show was good but Jake and Amir did try a little to hard to keep the act going, it would have been nicer if they had just been themselves.

The only two episodes of WLTV I’ve seen were the two collegehumor ones. I enjoyed both of them, probably because I’m such a big collegehumor fan. After seeing so many negative responses I skimmed through a large portion of them and it seems like most of them came from absurdly pretentious people who consider wine loving to be some sort of special club. This show was clearly designed to open that club up to a lot of newer and younger people and I think you all are just upset because that makes your membership less important. As a college student about to turn 21, I really appreciate Gary enlightening me about what to look for in an inexpensive wine.

And jake and amir are by far the funniest people on the internet, though I’ll admit it works better when it’s scripted.

UGh straight up, I do not like these guys, and I really hate the idea that they represent the average collage student, since their humor is more on the level of middleschool. and if you want them to be jackoffs then stop asking them for their “thoughts” of which they clearly have few. Gary:
I have to agree with the majority here – it was a poor episode.
Amir was absolutely awful. Dreadful. Whether he was “in” or “out” of character it doesn’t matter – he was really bad. That’s unforunate as it may give some a bad impression of today’s college students. Jake was acceptable.

When asked basic questions, Amir could rarely reply. Sad, it’s not rocket science – “What do you smell here?”, as an example.

I recommend having another episode. Get some normal (half intelligent) college students. Maybe a college around you offers a wine appeciation class – Miami of Ohio does. The concept was fine.

I wouldn’t go so far as some posters mentioned – not showing the episode or apologizing – but it was bad.

No wonder they have to tape for 9 hours to get one minute of episode. I could see why!

QTD – Probably spent something in the sixties for a bottle of wine. And NO, I would not buy it from you, Amir, period. After about 2 minutes, I would leave – even if you were offering it at half the price.

In theory it could have been a great show (crossing audiences, educating wine neophytes on camera, and giving everyone a good laugh as a bonus). Unfortunately it just didn’t work. After watching this show I checked out the College Humor site and saw some 6 or 7 Jake and Amir videos, and actually found them very original and funny. But I think it was a mistake for them to have done the show in character, because it deprived us of the honesty and “realness” we want from guests. Not a big deal though, just a lesson learned.

    Wow. lots of comments.

Thanks for doing different stuff Gary. Maybe this wasn’t the most wine-nerdy episode ever, but one of the reasons people keep coming back to WLTV is because its not like anything else. Perhaps this show wasn’t a huge success, but you’re an outside the box kind of guy and a lot of us appreciate it.

On the flip-side, a lot of us would love a nerdy show about some wine we’ve never heard of before for the next episode. How bout an episode about Cotes du Rhone WHITE wine. hugely under appreciated.

OMG, you wine people suck… Does everything about wine needs to be that serious? I guess you buy wine to drink it alone in a basement and sob about your life. I live in Belgium, near the border of france and often go out to buy wine from local chateaus and those people there (REAL wine connaisseurs btw)are laughing and joking all day. Get over yourselves people!
Jake and Amir are freakin awesome.

To the handful of losers coming out the woodwork claiming it’s just old people who didn’t like this episode: No, kids, it’s that many of us are professionals and respect Gary from a business perspective (in addition to the wine perspective) and this show being such failsauce has a negative impact on both aspects of his brand (personal and business).

The fact that the two guests were humorless douchebags is really a secondary matter. The primary concerns are around Gary’s guest selection and ability to provide a worthwhile review of the wines, and in turn, the impact a bad show has on his brand (personal and WLTV).

The vast majority of the college dopeheads out there aren’t (and won’t be) significant wine buyers or drinkers anyway and any fear of not reaching them by not having episodes like this is most certainly an unreasonable fear. The ones who are interested in learning about wine will watch and appreciate your normal episodes of WLTV.

To put it another way, among the college-age audience, you aren’t gaining any eyeballs by having Jake and Amir on the show that you wouldn’t already have watching your show’s other episodes. If they’re watching the episode for Jake and Amir, they’re not your relevant audience and are more than likely missing the point of the show to begin with.

And from a wine review perspective, a branding perspective, and a guest selection perspective, this show was near worthless.

Why would you want to do a show with these idiots that don’t buy wine, and don’t drink wine, and don’t want to learn anything about wine???
I know you want to “mix it up a bit”, so instead of these twirps, why not just pick anyone at random that is buying wine in your store? At least it would be someone with an interest in wine at some level.

As a college student, I’ve been a fan Collegehumor.com since its inception. I think this could have been better than an abject failure with Jake alone. But the persona Amir has adopted of late is about on par with a poop joke.

This episode is, to me, indicative of a larger issue. You’ve had some great guests who have been engaging, informative and thought provoking. But they’re people in the wine game who have come to share not only interest, but knowledge. I never see the point in hosting guests who bring nothing to the table but their quasi-notable name and their raw ignorance. We watch the show to learn about regions, styles, movements, producers, history, etc., not to see someone else fail to do so. I friggin love the show, man. But c’mon.

I don’t think the Jake & Amir were all that funny, and I think some people are really over reacting with their criticism.

It’s like tasting wine, some wines are to my liking and some are not. I’m not going to stop trying all wines just because I happen to drink one that’s not to my taste, and Im not going to stop watching Garys show just because some are shows are more to my pallet than others.

Hey BT [and other fans of Jake and Amir],

If my favorite comedian was a guest on WLTV and he/she received so many negative comments, I would probably feel that the guest was treated unfairly –as I believe you do in this case. I get why fans of Jake and Amir are upset by the rough treatment of their favorite funny guys, and I respect you and the others who have defended them – especially in the face of so much contrary opinion. It shows character.

However, it might not be fair of you to accuse the majority of Gary’s fans of being pretentious. The fact that someone does not find Jake & Amir to be amusing doesn’t mean that they are a snob. In my case at least, it just means that I am too old to appreciate their style of humor as seen in this WLTV episode, and I think that many of the WLTV fans are at least somewhat older than you, Jake, and Amir. However, if you go back into the archives and view other episodes of WLTV and read some of the comments for each episode you watch, I think you will see that most of Gary’s fans are not at all snobbish & they don’t consider wine-loving to be a special club; and I have never read a negative or disrespectful comment based on anyone’s age.

I watch WLTV for much the same reason you do – to learn more about wine and to find good wine value for the money. Along the way, it’s nice to be entertained, which is why I think Gary includes guests – to entertain and inform. For me, Jake and Amir did neither of those things. I would much rather see you as one of Gary’s guests because you have a real interest. Amir couldn’t even fake it.

As you say, you have only watched two episodes of WLTV, and maybe that is not enough exposure to form an accurate opinion of the WLTV fans – just like it is unfair for viewers to be so negative about Jake & Amir after seeing them only on this WLTV episode. Humor is totally subjective and contextual, and to me [not being familiar with them] their brand of humor just did not seem to work on this program.

However, the video of Amir taking the $500,000 half-court shot was very funny! If their work is generally that good, I can understand why they have so many loyal fans.

It seems like lots of people have strong opinions on this episode. I’m semi young and have a pretty juvenile sense of humor but this show was a big let down. I don’t know much about Collegehumor but these guys seemed more like high schoolers in a class they hated. The other two from Collegehumor were at least entertaining. It seemed to me as though Gary was feeling that too. He had a look at some times as though he wanted to boot them out of the screen and go on with the show.

I’m a CKC, and I have been a devoted watcher for quite a while (I have the original black wrist band). I read quite a few posts, man this is a heated one. If you didn’t like it, you should look at it as being one of the few mediocre ones out of many incredible shows. If you did like it, that’s great. Gary is just going outside the box, and trying to bring new people to wine, which is what the world needs (although more wine drinkers means higher demand, and therefore higher prices. Oh well, it’s worth it!). It was not my cup of tea, but I’m sure it reached someone. Thank you for doing what you do, and keep up the good work Gary!

I thought the two guests completely disrespected the show by not taking it serious in the least. Being distracting and incoherent is not humor, colllege or otherwise. I love college humor videos, but there are a thousand ways to be funny, and being immature to the point where you start to take away from the show is not one of them. It was as if they got together before taping and thought up of ways to make the show as awkward as possible. Gary you did a nice job keeping cool, but man that must have been tough, JUST TASTE THE WINE AND TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK! IS THIS THAT HARD TO DO?! College Humor? More like elementary idiots.

  353. March 31, 2009

    ben from boston

This episode could go down as a major turning point for Gary, and an opportunity to really open peoples minds across all demographics. This “controversy” can only serve to strengthen the Gary Vaynerchuk brand in my mind. Also I think some Vayniacs need to start approaching life the way Gary approaches wine and open their minds and hearts to something new and even uncomfortable at times. That’s what pushing boundaries is all about. I think its clear that Gary enjoyed himself making this episode and is probably shocked by the negative reception, but that is the nature of the business, you cant please all the people all the time if you want to also be original and funny.

Meh, not good. Whatever though, I know you don’t edit, so you take the good, you take the bad.

I did check out the CH though. It was hilarious, especially the inappropriate DirectHD commercials. Jake and Amir were pretty good too. Maybe they just suck at impromptu or had a bad day. Just because an actor is “in character” doesn’t mean they’re doing a good job. I saw the character that Amir plays, and it is much better on the show.

QOTD: Either you are very clever and are asking an intelligent, tongue in cheek question, or accidentally did so. Either way, no. In my head, I liken the wine industry to the fashion industry, both are extremely susceptible to trends and hype. There are some people who are not prone to that and then there are people who are so concerned about status that if something is endorsed by a celebrity that they adore, they are willing to pay anything for a lesser product; I would like to consider myself a member of the former category. Well, that and I’m not a huge fan.

I’m a big fan of Jake and Amir. When I heard the concept for the episode, I was psyched. The show was ok. There were a few laughs, but a little more respect and a little less character would’ve brought the show to the level it needed to be at. Either way, in the right context each party brings crazy thunder and I appreciate them immensely.

Look, I understand that College Humor wants to keep it funny. and they should.

However, I don’t think Amir gave a good effort into keeping the show both funny and worthwhile. If you look at the last collegehumor episode, I give props to Streeter for actually giving in some input. And really, that show was hilarious, even though it did lose only *some* wine education in the process.

I give mad props to Jake – although he was harrassing Amir a little bit (Amir deserved it) he gave some nice input and respected Gary’s space for the show, not just wine in general.

Why are people who aren’t familiar with Jake and Amir judging this episode? It makes no sense. Gary obviously would not have wanted to do this with Jake and Amir not being in character, because then it would just be the Sarah and Streeter episode all over again.

Amir’s character is a 6 year old in a 25 year old’s body, and Jake’s character is just him dealing with the obnoxious stupidity that constantly comes out of Amir’s mouth.

Stop complaining about a “lack of respect” etc. etc. because this particular episode was designed for it. Stop being such pretentious snobs, sorry other peoples lives aren’t as ridiculously serious as yours.

I came to watch a new episode but there wasn’t one posted so I started reading the comments from yesterdays show. Most of them agreed with me that the show just didn’t work.
I hated to see the personal attacks both by the Vayniacs towards Jake and Amir and from a number of Jake and Amir fans against many of the WTV core fans. I guess we will just have to agree to disagree on our opinions regarding this episode and the type of humor Jake and Amir provide.
I did appreciate that Amir took the time to post a comment to apologies to those who did not like the show and say the idea to do the show “in character” was their idea and the onus should be on he and Jake.
I thought it was a stand up thing to do and I respect him for it.
For the record I went back and watched the video that was linked and I have to admit it was pretty funny.
Keep up doing the show you want to do.

Hey love College Humor and Wine library tv but I agree with most of the posts. This was disappointing, the first two college humor people were better.

I am a Jake and Amir fan, but I was looking forward to their serious opinions on the wine. I really can’t tell if they had no opinion about what they were drinking or if they were just trying to stay in character. Their characters even started to deteriorate at the end making for a somewhat painful viewing experience. Maybe they can do another episode where they are out of character? Would anyone even want to watch?

To Jay, who wrote “No, kids, this show … has a negative impact on both aspects of his brand … If they’re watching the episode for Jake and Amir, they’re not your relevant audience”

Perhaps it is you who need a lesson in marketing strategy. The value was not in having Jake and Amir (J&A) as guests on the site, but in the link to WLTV that was placed on J&A’s blog. J&A have more than 70K readers from Google Reader *alone* — a substantially sized new audience. Having that audience just click on the link and see WLTV’s web site raises the awareness of Gary’s brand.

Now consider if only 1% of the people who clicked on that link actually became WLTV fans, Gary has just expanded his audience base by at very least 700. As these 700+ new fans become more involved in the wine field as a result of WLTV, they will likely tell their friends about WLTV, thereby further increasing Gary’s audience base.

In fact, just the increased awareness about WLTV that will result from this flamewar is a plus for Gary. Can you imagine how many hits he is getting on his site because of this one controversial episode? And as many of you Vayniaks have pointed out, there are 600+ episodes of WLTV that you love, so it’s not likely that he’ll lose his existing audience base just because of one episode.

So in the end, this was a win for Gary because he gained more brand recognition by placing WLTV in front of a huge, untapped audience.
Several of you suggested Gary should have invited real college students from a local wine appreciation club on the show. Do you get the point that this would not have gained him the huge audience base that linking to J&A already successful empire did? At the most, those “real” kids would have told their friends and family to watch the episode and Gary’s already established fans would have snootily said “bravo, Gary, for reaching out to those poor uneducated kids. We’ve done our good deed for the day. QOTD: I’d rather not mention how much I spent…. Let’s just say it started with a K and ended with a G” No expansion, no brand awareness… just stuffy wine snobs happy that their latest installment of WLTV was to their liking.

I am of the fans of CollegeHumor who discovered this site through the recent crossover. I find Gary very insightful and entertaining. I am not personally interested in wine, but I find his videos interesting nonetheless.

I am sorry that so many WLTV fans were disappointed by the appearance of Jake and Amir. I have taken the time to watch some of Gary’s other videos, and I can see how this episode fails to replicate those other experiences.

However, as other CollegeHumor viewers have mentioned, “Jake and Amir” is a label placed on a specific type of CollegeHumor video skit. In such videos, Amir pursues Jake’s friendship in a particularly fantastic manner. The character of Amir is unintelligent, unoriginal, and often unstable, while Jake is resentful and abusive but relatively normal.

Amir and Jake, the actors, take on these roles specifically for these skits. In their MTV show, Hardly Working videos, and even in the Prank Wars video linked above, Amir and Jake play more reasonable facsimiles of themselves.

Gary, however, hosted a show with Jake and Amir playing characters from the “Jake and Amir” skits. This was probably a mistake. The “Jake and Amir” skits depend upon a kind of relationship between the two that is disruptive and disrespectful. Neither of those characteristics is conducive to a successful or productive critique of wine. Neither Jake nor Amir would be interested in such a pursuit. Thus, neither actor portrayed their character as particularly interested in tasting wine.

Gary probably should have requested different CollegeHumor actors or that Jake and Amir come as themselves instead of their characters. The distinction is difficult to understand when dealing with actors who play exaggerated characters that share their names. A similar analogy might be having Stephen Colbert on the show. The character Stephen Colbert is extremely different from the actor.

As a CollegeHumor and “Jake and Amir” fan, I was delighted to see the characters engage in the setting of Gary’s wine show. However, if I were a WLTV viewer, I would probably suggest that Gary avoid similar situations in the future. I am sure it is tempting, while watching “Jake and Amir” skits, to wonder if they would be interesting to meet and discuss wine with, but, as this video shows, you cannot then expect your characters to behave reasonably.

I disagree with those viewers who find Jake and Amir childish or feel that they reflect a decline in the quality of humor, whether at the college level or otherwise. I think that “Jake and Amir” skits display a continually progressing relationship that relies on a deeper understanding of the characters and their history rather than quick, disposable jokes. “Stupidity jokes” are funny, and “Jake and Amir” skits are full of them, but the series has continually relied more heavily on the viewers’ familiarity than their attraction to clownish behavior.

I am sorry that Jake and Amir disappointed WLTV fans, but I really hope that they might be willing to put aside their disappointment in the episode as a guide to the consumption of wine and examine it more thoroughly for whatever comedic value may exist.

Hi, all. I am a first-time visitor to this site (yes, brought in by the Jake&Amir tie-in). While I agree with many of the detractors that staying in character may not have been the wisest decision, I also think a number of you are missing the point of the episode. Wine Library TV is a very nontraditional approach to being a wine connoisseur to begin with, and I applaud Gary for expanding his demographic. Like many Jake&Amir fans who are also budding wine aficionados, this exposure has led me to bookmark this site.

I am actually a Scotch drinker, but my wife is helping develop my wine palette. As a Scotch drinker, I look for many of the same elements in a good Scotch that you look for in a good wine (Macallan and a number of other whiskys are matured in Sherry casks, giving them a great bouquet). In fact, on the subject of going off the reservation, I think it would be a neat idea to explore that common ground if you haven’t done so already, perhaps by having Scotch experts on the show. Props to you, Gary, for thinking outside the box, and thumbs-up to viewers from both camps who found some middle ground. Cheers!

I think people are being a little harsh. I agree that this wasn’t the best episode or the greatest guests but I think Gary was just trying to expand his fan base to a wider audience. The older I get, the more out of touch I get with younger humor, but I probably would have loved these guys ten years ago. Thanks Gary for again going outside the box.

Wow, didn’t see that Amir posted. That was pretty classy man, but no one should have to apologize.

A lot of people didn’t think it was a stellar performance, but who the crap cares? Gary’s normal fans will get over it like they always do and hopefully the negative comments won’t dissuade the newer audience from watching the show, or even liking wine in general.

I totally believe that you guys can kill it with 90% of both audiences if you tried it again, in character or not. I would love to see Gary do a future ep with you.

This can be a huge win for future guests. Gary, you could keep a log of what you would consider to be key episodes that can show people your posting audience base. That way, they can still be themselves (and better be), but then they can gear their act or spiel more towards the viewers’ tastes. There is nothing wrong with that, it helps bridge polar audiences together. Take it or leave it, just throwing out an idea.

Look im not trying to be a D**k, and what i said was not personal, (Ill rephrase it, I hope their CHARACTERS get lost in the woods) but Im pretty sure having “characters” on an unscripted show would be a bad idea. You cant improvise a character, the whole idea is that youve alread thought about how that character, as opposed to you, will react or what they will say. if these guys wanted to do an “in character” show, then it should have been at least run thru once off camera, hell do a script, work out a few APPROPRIATE places for jokes. And how am i suppost to know your in character if your characters name is also your name?

I think the video achieved what it set out to do- bring this shower to a wider range of people. So props to the boys for appearing in it. I’m a college student in my early 20s, little experience with wine, so for me the vid was both educational and appealing in terms of comedy.
People need to stop judging and get over themselves.

  377. March 31, 2009

    Brittany

I must say I have to disagree with Jay down there below me.

“To put it another way, among the college-age audience, you aren’t gaining any eyeballs by having Jake and Amir on the show that you wouldn’t already have watching your show’s other episodes. If they’re watching the episode for Jake and Amir, they’re not your relevant audience and are more than likely missing the point of the show to begin with.” – Jay

I myself am a college kid who doesn’t really know about wine, though it doesn’t mean I wouldn’t like to. And it is strictly because of Jake and Amir that I discovered this site and this video. So I think that Jake and Amir brought in a huge audience that would have remained unclaimed without their involvement. People can have a wide variety of humor. Just because I enjoy the Jake and Amir videos doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy and learn about a good glass of wine.

And what people have to understand is that they are playing Jake and Amir as characters, not as people. This is entirely unedited, and frankly I don’t think most of you could do a better job in this situation. Why is it so difficult to accept that some people just don’t know about wine. This episode is aimed towards college kids, as you can clearly see from the title “Tasting College Kid Wines”. Our palate is going to be much less trained and honestly, I would be lost watching an episode filled with too much stuffiness. Just take this for what it’s worth. You don’t have to like what they did, but you should at least respect people for what they do and not call them “humorless douchebags”.

I realize I’m in the minority here, but I have to say, while I’ve never heard of these kids, and am a big Thunder Show fan, I thought they were very, very funny, that Gary did a good job keeping things moving while also letting them do their thing…I think it was a very entertaining show.

I’m a big Jake and Amir fan and I was not even impressed with this episode. Truthfully the only WLTV episodes I have seen were ones with college humor staff in them, so after reading some comments I decided to watch some other episodes, and really like how the show is done on a regular basis, i will also probably become a regular to WLTV. I still hope Gary (had to scroll up and find the name…) decides to keep bringing in interesting people on to the show especially college humor staff… Patrick Castles cough* cough*

    Really funny episode.
Not everybody’s type of humour, just like not everybody likes Gary’s super enthusiastic ways, or not everybody likes Pinot Noir. Just because something is not to your liking does not make it wrong, because others do like it. That’s variety for ya.

GV- Are you serious? Come on man, next time do a quick interview on your guests before you put them on these WL episodes. 8:16 in to the video and I couldn’t take the Amir guy anymore. I can stand a bit of douchebagness, but this guy takes it to another annoying level.

Gary – kudos for giving the College Humor guys another go, despite the bad reaction last time.

Well, my college years are 20+ years behind me, so I guess I’m not part of the target demographic for this episode. I realize that Jake and Amir were in character, but their characters weren’t even remotely amusing (just irritatingly stupid). Fortunately I had all the other comments to read while the episode played in the background, so I didn’t have to actually watch most of it.

QOTD: I have a couple of bottles of $300 Scotch (30 year-old Laphroaig), but my most expensive wine was probably around $120 for a Silver Oak (don’t remember what vintage). And no, I wouldn’t buy anything from a little toerag like that guy.

    J Crazy

I love that this show tries to reach into EVERYONE’s computer screen. This is truly what changing the wine world is all about: getting out there into venues and demos that Wine Spectator and His High Holiness Robert Parker couldn’t dream of tapping into. Imagine Sir James Suckling trying to do the same thing. Uh uh, not gonna fly. No disrespect to either of the wine world’s magnates as I deeply respect their opinions, brands, ability to spread their wine opinions but, dudes, if your over 21 you should have access to wine knowledge that speaks your language.

QOTD: 2003 Sassicaia (disappointing at best)…and sorry, Amir, but I’m not the one with a TV show so we’ll have to got halfers on this one.

I have no idea who these guys were. Hey, i’m 49!! and i’m from Canada. How’s that for being boring? But i have to agree with most comments that this show lacked a bit of fun. I don’t say it was boring. It’s not my kind of humor. Watched the link with the basketball prank. thought it was pretty hilarious. This show is about passion and to me, it was pretty obvious that these guys are not passionnate about wine. So, to me this is how they missed the point. They don’t seem to be passionnate about anything in what i’ve seen, but again, all i know about these guys is that they’re obviously big in colllege humor and not big in wine. Nice try Gary, and if this show makes college kids buy wine, even cheap wine, then the show was a success. This is what this show is all about, right? Changing the wine world? The problem is, maybe, who have they convinced watching this show?……….Let’s say this is the first time i watch this show and i stumbled on this episode…. It might not change my wine world….

  389. April 1, 2009

    Monden

QOTD: The most expensive wine i bought was a Grand cru Chablis 2002, Clos Bougros, Jean-Marc Brocard at 52 bones(can.) It was quite good, though i had with a crowd of people who didn’t appreciate it quite enough for what it was.Grand cru Chablis are quite subtle and you need to a have a well educated pallatte to appreciate it. But it was a lot of fun still. I think you can still enjoy a good wine with people you enjoy being with, even if they don’t enjoy the wine as much as you would like them to. It kind of sums up this show with these 2 guys. It’s still fun because you’ve enjoyed the wine and the company, but the wine experience was a bit diminished, and that’s a bit sad, because after all, this is what this show is all about. QOTD@:And i wouldn’t buy it from Amir or anybody at twice the price. Maybe Scarlett Johansson if she would drink it with me….

Ouch. Not much else to add that hasn’t been said, is there?

Amir was pathetic. In character or not… he comes across as an annoying heckler. There are numerous ways of acting cute if you know nothing of the subject, but THIS WAS NOT ONE OF THEM.

QOTD: Amir, I will not even google you, now that I saw this show, let alone buy anything from you. I really love wine, but if you were the last wine seller on the planet, I’d drink piss.

Funny and fun show. I gotta check these guys out on their site more often,

QOTD: 2005 Chateau Figeac. No, I would NOT pay double to get it from Amir… but I like that business plan.

  393. April 1, 2009

    YoungDave

Well, after reading some of the comments from the regular Vayniacs, I had to comment again. Bottom line about this show:

Gary did this show to do some very smart cross-promotion (I’m sure there is some better, more business-oriented vocabulary to plug in here). The idea of this type of show is to bring in new viewers to the Thunder Show from the huge college humor fan base (and then also turn more younger people on to the wine world), and then also potentially give the College Humor site some wine drinking new viewers. So maybe the show was a bit silly and even annoying for some of the regular Vayniacs from what I read in the previous comments, but Gary has given so many educational episodes with great guests, ALL AS FREE CONTENT for years, so if you didn’t like the show, no one is forcing you to watch the whole thing. As a regular viewer we have the opportunity to voice our opinions on the shows, but to talk about how you think it was a waste of your time and seem upset about it is foolish. This show is FREE and so it won’t kill you if there is one episode that isn’t as enjoyable as the rest. Gary will do another one tomorrow, and everything will be ok. It was a different episode, but fun nonetheless.

    @ YoungDave:

I haven’t watched the show yet, but no matter what goes down, what you say is da true. I’ve seen a lot of comments hating in this vein over the past whatever, and I think folks need to keep in mind that this is all a freebie for them. Look, we don’t have network programming (or most of the internet) without advertising — you may hate the ads, but they’re what’s bringing you your precious content. NCAA tourney, anyone?

Look, lord knows I’ve bought plenty of wine from GV after he’s raved about it on WLTV. But you know what? Every single wine has been exactly as advertised and I’ve enjoyed them all immensely.

Remember that TruBlood episode from a ways back? I’m 85% certain that was a sponsored deal, and I loved that show.

These guys are funny. Gary does a good show. Sometimes these things don’t mix well. As I believe Amir pointed out with his repeated sulfites joke, there’s only so much funny you can do tasting wine and Gary’s pretty much got it covered. I don’t hate this like so many others, but it’s not a great episode. I love “Scrubs” to death and there was one a couple of weeks ago that was kind of all over the place. It happens.

I find most of these non-wine guest shows of dubious value. To the point where I only lesson to them while I am, for example, doing my income tax. Otherwise it would be a complete waste of time.

The guest episodes are also bloated – often to an hour, requiring their having to be 2 parters. The irony is, they have half as much real content as a regular length solo episode.

Gary’s appearances on non-wine shows (e.g. Ellen, Conan, Today, etc.) are more than enough to drag in the non-wine people. Replicating this on his own spot defeats the purpose.

Regarding this episode in particular, it was as irritating as Joachin Phoenix Hip-Hop persona. Joachin is not Hip Hop and Gary is not (for a long time at least) a College Student.

I’m pretty sure Gary knew what he was getting into when he decided to do a show with the College Humor guys. He’s not dumb or oblivious. Whether or not you liked the humor, the guys were just playing their character they played on their show. It was also interesting to see the two of them (at times) being honest about how they felt about the wine. I agree that it may not be the best mix (good wine and college kids), but I can pretty much say that Gary was not clueless in choosing his guests for the show. He did say he’s watched every single one of their episodes (pretty sure he was not joking about that).

I have now read through all 400 of the comments and went back and looked at the show one more time. I have been here from literally the start of this program. Counted from somewhere around episode 30 or so then worked back. I catch up even after I have been out of the country for a while so I have seen the posters come and go.
For the old line guys, maybe most of us don’t get the college humor lines but so what. Watched about 10 of their videos and it wasn’t my taste. Fine, again so what.

The new posters that were brought in by this cross show have, for the most part, left rude comments that really have nothing to do with learning about wine. A few have left good posts and they will continue here. The ones who left rude posts will leave as they will be bored learning about wine but will not have seen some of GV’s antics like doing a wine tasting in a snow and ice storm (look it up, none funnier) and this to me is the essence of this video blog.

I know this content is free and GV is welcome to try any marketing shtick he wants to try out. Doesn’t mean we as viewers have to like it and we are also within our rights to say so as this is a very public forum.

It’s understandable that many regulars of Wine Library would not like “Jake & Amir”-type humor. I watched this from beginning to end and found it both interesting and funny.

@DrEdwardo: If Gary truly wants to change the wine world by including all types of audiences then there is no such thing as “more than enough”. Also, you might want to proof-read your comment again since “their” seems to be another error.

Will watch more WL episodes solely because of this episode and would be happy to see additional episodes with the CH staff.

wow. Dumb and Dumber has a new name. “Boys, what do we get on the nose?” I am surprised he didn’t ask one of them to stand in the corner until they could say something intelligent. haha. Very unusual show, but not distasteful. A hint of stupid and an after taste of “these two do not have girlfriends”.

Would you hire either one of these guys? haha. Checking me out at the DVD rental, thank you.

I think it’s funny that Gary has been the “new generation” and he just got up’d by another newer generation. haha. Glad they were on, totally glad I am not in college again, nor 19 again. ha. Glad I have no daughters their age!

You took it easy on these guys but I have to admit you dropped the ball allowing them on the show. But hey in the great words of Aaron Neville. “Everybody Plays A Fool” I know you will live and learn from this one. Burn that bridge. They are not with you.

What scares me is I DO have a daughter the age of these guys and she’s starting college in the fall. My anxiety level just went up a notch. She better not hang out with one of these goons (unless they make it big, maybe I’ll rethink this)!

P.S. the show was fine – probably would have missed this one but for the Suxx wine in the show thereafter.

Gary, I watched #650 (the hotel room) before this one, and you mentioned that you were sorry about the negative comments regarding your CH guests. I actually don’t blame them – they came in as advertised. I was more annoyed by this show because I can’t figure out why it ever got made. The previous CH show you guys did was every bit as bad, and I just couldn’t figure out why you’d think it was a good idea to do another similar show – especially so soon after the first one.

Anyway, nobody’s perfect – sometimes you knock it out of the park, and sometimes you strike out trying to bunt. You’re consistently hitting doubles and triples, so no big deal here. Just focus on the main thing that got us all here – the wine. Thanks for always entertaining.

I don’t normally like to jump on the band wagon, but really???? Not funny!
QOTD-Chris Ringland 2002 Shiraz and he seems like the kind of kid you could find in a wine store but no, it’s expensive enough. I couldn’t afford to pay twice the price.

ok so i’m watching this for the third time, and this is like fingernails down a chalkboard with these guys. gary, i love you brother, but oh my! this is just annoying! i love having people on who have little experience with wine, it’s fun to see their reactions, but these guys DO NOT CARE. that takes away from what you’re doing…you are in reality and they are in an alternate universe. i’m sorry man, but this is bad content. i will watch you till the day i die, but this was not a good format. have actors on, but don’t let them be in character. i feel bad about saying this but, brother, this is just bad.

I think it’s hilarious how you guys can come up with no end of pretentious drivel about the nuances of cheap supermarket wine but when it comes to humor and filmmaking you think you are the final authority and have nothing interesting or positive to say about this video. Personally I would rather take a diverse and thoughtful approach to things like human interaction and a completely neanderthal approach to what goes on on my palette than the other way round.

Regarding “Also, you might want to proof-read your comment again since “their” seems to be another error,” all I can say is you might want to google “possessive precede gerunds”.

These guys are to humor what Britney Spears is to music. I kept seeing their videos come across digg and finally gave into the hype. Now I love lowbrow or college-esque humor but these guys are simply not funny AT ALL. And I dont mean this video, but any video on college humor where they “prank” each other. All very obvious jokes and I think they are meant to be fake but cant really tell. As my ninth prank I am going to have scratch off a lottery card, Amir, and have you win $10MM dollars! And you will believe it after the 8 previous pranks, and the audience will say you got Pwned! Genius!

No. Just, no. No more stoner douchebags, please.

I like the concept of reaching out to new drinkers and getting them started on the right foot. But could you please do this _on_ College Humor and spare the rest of us who have moved beyond drinking wine out of plastic kegger cups.

I didn’t get these guys humor at all, not even a little. I’m 34 so I guess I’m totally out of touch with this generation – oh well. I work with people this age and they seem to be just as spacey as these guys too. I think you did a fine job Gary, this is just a show for a younger crowd which is what you need to do. I’ll move on to the next episode and hope the content is geared more for me. Thanks for all you do!

I’m one of the few who watched Gary BECAUSE of the College Humour guys(and Sarah). I’m not a huge wine fan as I am allergic to the sulfites. I think Gary and the boys did a great job playing off each other. It was a lovely video and definitely funny if you know and love Jake and Amir. I’m still in shock to see a video over 5 minutes with these two in it. I mean 26 minutes?! Amazing.

Gary! How lucky are you to have actually been in the College Humour office. I heard Sarah and Pat laughing in the background and I now envy you.
This has actually really got me interested and I can’t wait to see the next video. Thanks

  431. April 3, 2009

    Geoff

This was a very funny episode. Although they knew nothing of wine they were good sports and appeared willing to learn. If you win them and their followers now you really will be changing the wine world and introducing a new audience to drinking it. You took a chance and stretched the boundary – good job Gary!

  432. April 3, 2009

For those who don’t know Jake and Amir, their normal skits are much better than this. I think it’s obviously awkward for both parties since neither are really in their normal situations. It did seem a little forced on J&A’s part but they did the best they could. Give them a chance and check out their website to see what they can really do.

  434. April 3, 2009

If you can get past the humor you were expecting from this episode, it offered something more.

These two may have been the most unknowledgable wine guests ever on The Thunder Show™. And that’s what alot of us are like – wine neophytes. We’re watching Gary say “This wine has a cassis thing going on, with hints of soured black current and pencil shavings…” It can all be a little intimidating. Jake & Amir ? intimidating! And if you’re trying to spread the gospel of wine, that’s a good thing!

  435. April 3, 2009

    Michele

Gary – FYI college students drink $3-7 bottles of wine ($15 is splurging). You should have tried Smoking Loon Shiraz, Relax Dornfeder or Red Bicyclette wine. OR made it even more college and brought in some Franzia Red Blush.

    Great Show.

I’m sorry I am not a wine snob. I still like the same stuff I liked when I was in my early 20’s. It’s great to see Gary Market wine for the college set. I wish he was around 40 years ago. I am a fan. And as much as this was a weak show. It was a great show.

    WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE!

That is my name for this episode. Gary, these guys may be very good at what they do for their audience, but they rely on heavy editing and pre-production. They obviously cannot wing it like you do every day all the time.

Oh my gosh. I’ve seen every show, and they can’t all be top 10 or even top 100, but this is definitely BOTTOM 5 material.

Run, do not walk, in the other direction!

Un-funny. Painful to watch. Keep reaching out to new people Gary, but do a little research first. These guys are total duds. Can’t fathom the hype about them. Is this what college kids admire? Woe is me. Still love you tho.

After all the bad reviews on this show, I had to finally watch it and the show ran long and was tedious. Gary..continue to take risks because it keeps things fresh. This could have easily been a really great show but they obviously can’t improv and that is your strength.

Forget paying for wine. 100% apple juice. yeast. and a week or two is all i need.

Question for Gary: Is it hard to do a show with these stuck up assholes sucking your dick all the time? Obviously you used Jake & Amir for a reason, and they did what they normally do on their show. As someone who would never look at this site, I actually enjoyed learning about wine tonight.

  447. April 6, 2009

    RedLoverJim

Sorry Gary not a fan of this one. I like Jake and Amir doing the CH stuff, I really like the WL episodes with guests, and especially the guests from outside the wine trade, but it helps a lot if they have some level of interest in wine, which clearly neither one of them did. Throwing out wine questions to them that seem like they’re asked solely to trip them up. The last CH episode was good, but these two, I just got the feeling they were there because they had to be for some reason.

QOTD: 2003 Cheval Blanc, and no I wouldn’t pay double (or even half) to Amir for it.

  448. April 6, 2009

OK. SO… Jake and Amir… awesome, hilarious. On the ball here, and always. I love them. Gary, too intense. I don’t watch your little wine show normally. Seriously, though?… A wine show for college kids and you pick $12 bottles? I just bought a 1.5L for $10 and I’ve been out of college for 5 years now… so maybe next time you have guest stars… think about the demographic.

  449. April 6, 2009

To quote the episode “All and all, a very disappointing episode”… yep, nuf said – these guests, like fish after 3 days, stink.

    Gary,

Based on this episode, I’m guessing that you’re sick and tired of doing the show.

These two are about as funny as a compound fracture.

Jake – by far the more likable of the two – will be driving a UPS truck by age 30.

Amir – the dolt who thought he won half a mil – will be bald by age 35 and will take his own life by age 40.

Oh please, oh please, oh please!

    Regards,

    Chevy Chase

These negative commenters are losers. I thought the show was a nice change of pace and I laughed out loud a couple of times. It was a fun show. I’d love to see you bringing people on who want to learn about wine and walking them through how exactly develop their love for wine for a multiple part series, in fact. I think it would be fun to watch people learn and would certainly help a lot of people

I’m used to seeing these comments on a youtube video. Can we keep them there please. Learn how to communicate without throwing out childish insults.

Yes you have been noticed for all of the wrong reasons.

I do agree that it wasn’t one of the greatest episodes of WLTV ever produced, that is what you get when you are all out of your comfort zone.

If you are going to make a splash out there, be noticed for all the right reasons, not because you think you are being extremely funny in your comments, throwing out childish insults lets leave that for conversations down the pub with your mates, not on the internet for every one to see.

Honestly, I can’t really talk much about the show since I’ve only seen a few episodes, but give the guy a break. This is video number six hundred and something, I think Gary deserves to do something a little different.
I thought it was good, although I’ll agree that it seemed a little weird for them in the situation. It probably would have been better if they would have just been themselves I guess. Whatever though, all good fun.

Gary you’re the man for reaching out to the younger crowd! I’m in college and I’ve really enjoyed expanding my palate to wine. I consider myself an experienced beer ‘taster’ and collect beers from around the world..even got to try the infamous Trappist Westvleteren 12!

    Wine tastes awful.

There’s no reason for anyone to say that it tastes good when an actually sweet-sour drink like orange juice completely blows it away. Wine just tastes like rotten, dry fruit. There may be some taste left behind, but comparing drinking wine to drinking something that tastes good is like comparing picking scraps of food out of a garbage can to eating from a full, gourmet buffet of all your favorite foods.

Wine does not quench thirst and doesn’t give any real satisfaction beyond the paradoxical feeling that you are awesome because you drink wine, and the initial tipsiness leading into drunkenness.

Jake is right. Some wines smell like dog. You guys are all just too pompous to admit it. In the back of your minds, though, you know I’m right and it makes you furious.

  468. August 19, 2009

Gary brought the thunder as always

Amir is lame and not funny

Jake was really cool but looses ton of points because of his friend Amir

I think this was a MAJOR flop for the CKC’s

I do love this show however because it is totally random and I really enjoy those type of shows. Sometimes I get bored with the regular WLTV setting.

    New watcher

Although I’m sure the majority of avid wine library watchers could not stand this episode, I was absolutely 100% impressed. I love how you combine two things I thoroughly enjoy: Jake and Amir and inexpensive good tasting wine. I’m in college so obviously I don’t have much money at all to spend on any type of alcohol, but in the near future I will definitely buy a bottle of Riesling. Very helpful and may continue to watch your show because of this.
