Final Four weekend is also my wedding anniversary weekend. I remember people running out of the reception to check scores……1993.

Thanks a million for the birthday shout-out, Gary Vee! I’m a psychologist, BTW. Not that it matters much (except to my patients). See you in a few weeks on the Thunder Cruise. I can’t wait!

Good to see you back in the saddle. Love the reaction to the MSU bottle. That might have been the most genuine reaction ever on WLTV.

    Welcome back Gary!

Fun show! At least some of the wines came out nice.

The college kids probably have a lot to learn still.

    Chill!

QOTD: We do not have colleges up here in Québec. We have CEGEPS, which are gov’t run, and Universities. Big cheers to Champlain College (which is ironically a CEGEP) and to Bishop’s University, both of which I attended (about 10 years ago-God I’m old!)

    Cheers!

    Hi Gary,
Nice to see you return to form. I really didn’t enjoy the College Humour episode but you’ve got your mojo back!

Clever show with the college tie-in. Your reaction to the Michigan State wine was the same one I had when Sparty beat Louisville last week. Blew my brackets up.

Gary. Great show. Been out of action for a while, just getting back into the swing, and it’s great to see you are still kicking out the serious thunder. Thanks for that. You’re a good man.

    QOTD: WE ARE………….PENN STATE

I didn’t drink wine when I went to Penn State just cheap beer. My palate has changed and my belly has flattened since the college years.

  25. April 3, 2009

    Orion S.

Brutal for Mich. State, but it’s not exactly the best place to try to grow wine grapes. They could source some good white grapes from up north maybe…

QotD: Bowling Green State University. Gotta go with the alma mater.

Great Show. As a second generation Wolverine (Univ of Michigan) I was smiling a bit when MSU got thrashed. But despite the rivalry, I’ll be rooting for them this weekend. Michigan could use something to celebrate with everything else going down the toilet (with the Spartan Wine).

Are you going to do the California bio-dynamic show you mentioned in the episode with Joly?

  28. April 3, 2009

    Brian Smith

QOTD:Shout out to Indiana State University and FullSail University

Question for you: 1) If you could only drink one bottle/style/vintage of Riesling(currently available) for the rest of your life…what would it be?

I go to Western Washington Univ. But am from Illinois, so I’m a fan of the Illini, and I’ve spent a lot of time in Ohio, so I’m a big OSU fan. Weird, I know.

Great show with the blind college wines. I hope MSU does better this weekend. Hopefully they take their punishment tonight so they can get their one shining moment on Monday.

LINE OF THE DAY: “It tastes like you took a sour patch kid and soaked it in water, and then sprayed some anger in there.”

Good God in heaven, what do you think these wines are going to taste like? :)

    (not really tho)

Gary,I don’t have a favorite college but Ohio State is the big one around here. But changing the subject I have a question for you. Do you think you resemble a young, sexy Gargamel from “The Smurfs”? Think about it.

Also the hubby and I are so excited for you and Lizzy, we can’t wait for the appearance of your baby! I will continue to pray for good health and happiness for everyone involved.

Great concept. Not surprised about the WA wines. I have a hard time finding any type of fruit or veggie that doesn’t kill from that soil. Try a Walla Walla onion.

QOTD: I went to Southern IL but wouldn’t say it’s my favorite College/Univ. I can’t give an answer because there’s so much variation, ie: sports, location, programs, Playboy models, etc. Final 4 picks: NC/CT. CT.

Also, just out of curiousity and because I really value your opinion on this subject: What are your thoughts on Jay Cutler and would you have liked to see him on the Jets and not the Bears?

  40. April 3, 2009

    bdshupe

Fun to watch college wines being evaluated.

I have to choose Southern Illinois University not just because I go there, but because I think it is overshadowed by the University of Illinois.

    Go Salukis!

  41. April 3, 2009

    A dumb Rhine king

    Love blind tastings!!

Could you please tell me where to buy that angry spray? It sounds fun to me.

QOTD: UofM in Mpls/St. Paul. Huge fan of theirs because they engineer hybrids between American and European wine grapes so that they can grow in the harsh climate of MN, but still produce a good wine. Frontenac, Frontenac Gris, La Crescent, and their new one Marquette, can all be made into very good wines. If I was just starting in college again, I would be all about taking ag classes there and working with the viticulture/enology departments. http://www.grapes.umn.edu/wine.html

  42. April 3, 2009

    Jeff S.

When I first scrolled down to view the wines from the show to see “Spartan Cellars”, the first thought I had was “Wow! I didn’t know San Jose State made wine.”
I hate that there is another school with the same mascot as my California alma mater… I never root for wine to be bad, but I felt vindicated when the Michigan wine was the worst wine ever.
    SJSU Spartans for life!

  43. April 3, 2009

    jigger

Hacksaw reference (nice . . . like vanilla ice). Can a wine taste like vanilla ice? If any wine was going to taste like ice, ice, baby, it would have to have been this episode. Love it when you’re all over the board with the taste descriptions. It inspires me to keep experimenting with my palate. I like to write down the first 5 that come to mind. Sometimes hard for me to get past 3 with confidence but it seems to help me become more discerning and I enjoy the smell / taste exercise. Go Denver Pioneers. Peace.

QOTD: IUP, The Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Proud alumni.

GARY, i’ve always loved your wine personification analogies…

I make electronic (house) music- and when im in deep i start thinking of the sounds in the same light; comparing them to kids I know in school (im 18) and like my friends parents fighting might be the kick drum and snare and then i add a hihat and thats the marriage councilor or something…

i’ve been watching since ep 145 and I seriously feel like I could get inside your head and destroy you.

    thanks!!!

    Bromidedrag

Great show Gary… love the blinds! I think you could do them every episode and I’d be happy.

Idea: What about a Double Blind that’s all over the place. Different varietals, price ranges and types (small specialty vineyards and bi grocery store brands). Would love to see that one.

    QOTD: Go Cal… Golden Bears!

  47. April 3, 2009

Great show! I love how you integrate the daily happenings in life into your show (ie: wine on the plane, in your house, college wines for the final 4) This is why I love your show so much – this is how you show the passion and bring the thunder, and I love it.

QOTD: Rutgers University bc. it’s my alma mater and it is so under rated…seriously!

  51. April 3, 2009

    David Dadekian

QOTD: I honestly don’t have an answer for this one. It would require some thought and I’m about to switch off for the night. Oh well.

  52. April 3, 2009

    The Tom

QOTD: University of KENTUCKY! I didn’t go to school there, but I live in KY and the whole state is so full of diehard Kentucky fans, its really hard to even comprehend or explain. I think it might be something you can relate to, being a Jets fanatic. We just got a new basketball coach and I predict the Wildcats will come back in a big way next year. Kentucky’s football program ain’t too shabby either.

  53. April 3, 2009

QOTD: gotta go with my peeps at Walla Walla CC – rockstars.

I think you should re-evaluate the top two though…

fun show; gotta feel for those college kids trying to put together a wine. Does AJ make wine at school?

QOTD: Penn State (my first year was JoePa’s first as head coach.)
What, no love for PSU; I know it isn’t the NCAA, but they just rocked the garden winning the NIT.

man gary, brutal score for that michigan state wine, i almost want to buy it now just to experience 50 point quality.

easy question today, the university of wisconsin madison. great city, great people, acceptable wine selection, just about everything i want. i’m finishing up my third year now, but i’m on a study abroad program in australia now, honestly, madison wins on (almost) all counts.

  59. April 3, 2009

University of Kentucky WILDCATS! Coach Cal will be bringing back the thunder to UK basketball. Go Big Blue! Gary, I emailed you months ago about doing a bourbon tasting. I think you said something in your reply about coming to the Derby. That plan still on? or is imminent parenthood changing your mind about traveling? There are some good wineries in KY that you could check out while you’re here.

  60. April 3, 2009

    Wyo Tim

Fun show and love WA wines.

QOTD: Pen State – Where Gary Eberle (Eberle winery) played D nose guard for JoePa. GE was the first to plant Syrah in the US and mapped out the Paso Robles AVA.

QOTD: Michigan State University (proud grad and fan since the FIRST time they were in the Final Four (1957 with Jumpin’ Johnny Green — look it up).

MSU makes great basketball, not so much teh wine … but they did start the Michigan industry. Try some L.Mawby sparkling wine for the good stuff.

To Gretchen the Wolver-winer: at least MSU know how to make wine and play basketball, too!

  63. April 3, 2009

    Chilemily

QOTD: University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire…It gets overshadowed by UW-Madison and Marquette, but I guess I’m just loyal to my alma mater;)

Great show Gary…I’m curious as to how many schools have winerys as part of their A&M programs. Probably not too many, but none the less, great idea for a show.

Thanks for the blind tasting episode…and 5 is my favorite number as well FWIW.

Also please don’t judge all Michigan wines by this crap that MSU somehow pumped out, who knows where they even get their grapes from…

QOTD: Always has to be your alma matter, right? If not they treated you wrong, therefore the Broncos of Western Michigan University have my eternaly loyalty even though they’re in a mid-major conference (MAC).

    Gary,

Great show as always. I love the blind tastings! It’s awesome to see you go in with no preconceived notions of the wines.

QOTD: Indiana University. I live in Btown and love the college.

  81. April 4, 2009

    AbstruseJuice

AWESOME! Worst wine in WLTV history, I’m so glad I saw this show within a day of its posting, I never thought I’d be so excited to hear about a bad wine… Sour patches with an anger twist, I’m lovin’ that.

QOTD: Northeastern University, because of the three colleges that I’ve personally attended (I bounce around) it was my favorite campus.

  82. April 4, 2009

    Dustin

Great show, love the blind tasting episodes.

QOTD: I go to East Carolina University but I am a hardcore UNC basketball fan.

  83. April 4, 2009

    vinoBlue

QOTD: Thanks for the setup Gary. I root for the University of Michigan – born there, raised there, and I go there! What do you think puts the ‘Blue’ in vinoBlue?

The best part is that you just thrashed the Michigan State wine. I can’t wait to see the reaction when I send my friends at State that clip. You just made my day.

    GO BLUE OR GO HOME!

  84. April 4, 2009

    Ryan H

Hey Gary, this is my very first time posting. I had to post because I wanted to see if you would answer my question on the next show. I’ve been watching your show for a couple of months and lovin’ it! I’ve even gone back and watched a hundred or so past episodes, and I intend to watch them all.

Question for you: I’m 18, so obviously I can’t buy any wine. I can’t wait till I turn 21 to explode into the wine arena. When I turn 21 though, I don’t want to go buying tons of bottles of wine, emptying my pocket. How can I sample tons of wins without going broke?

  85. April 4, 2009

    Vanguy

Awesome episode! Way to bring the thunder, Gary.
QOTD: University of Michigan GO BLUE!

No Fresno St. wine? Yer Dunn!

  87. April 4, 2009

A psychologist watching the show….mmmm….maybe you’re her next subject matter Gary…lol

I always love the blind tasting format. My fine wine manager at work served me up a blind glass earlier…a New Zealand Montepulciano…no chance really.

Being English I am keen to hear your opinion on the French buying up some of the land in the South of England to plant grapes as they believe the terrior is suitableto that of Champagne. Any chance of doing a show on English varietals…Bacchus or Seyval Blanc.

QOTD: Have no understanding of the American college system so cannot respond…sorry

  88. April 4, 2009

    Christopher Scoggin

Double fun… A blind tasting and college made wines.

Always love the blind tastings and the less polished, less “professional” wines gave it a little something extra.

    Great stuff as usual.

QOTD: Don’t follow college sports so don’t really have a favorite but if push came to shove I would have to go with CU/CSU as a Colorado boy :)

  89. April 4, 2009

    YoungDave

QOTD: My life would be very different today without the guidance of my alma mater; Emerson College.

  90. April 4, 2009

    Richie

    Great episode again.
It’s really a pity that no universities in my country make any wine, or at least that they are not known if they do produce wine.

  91. April 4, 2009

    Green Pea

I love that Michigan State took a dirt nap. Go Buckeyes!!! Great show, love the blind tastings.

  92. April 4, 2009

    Pizza Vino Joe

As they say, those that can…do. Those that can’t…teach. I am sure that the students and teachers were very proud of their flawed wines. Put down your books (and your bongs) and go work at a winery and learn how to make wine from a real winemaker who does it for a living.

    O-H (short pause) I-O

  93. April 4, 2009

    BobbyTiger

Love the blind tastings. A 50? Phew.

Your way too young to remember putting your cigarettes in the sleeve of your t-shirt. Sorry……………I forgot you live in Jersey.

My favorite college in Argentina is the University of Buenos Aires, hands down. In the US I would go with my wife’s college WVU.

  95. April 4, 2009

    Jacob L.

Michigan State = watery sour patch kids spritzed with anger?!?!!? What a crazy description for a taste. Looks like you have a new t-shirt idea and I will be first in line to buy.
QOTD: Ohio State in the house, though I’m not sure we could have done much better than MSU if we had made a wine.

  96. April 4, 2009

    Derek F.

Cool show Gary, its nice to have you back in the dirty Jerse!! Hope all is well buddy!! \/\/ :-)

In these tough economic times, we are looking for the “value play” ($15 and under). Could you do a couple of shows focusing on the following: (1) southern France, in particular, wines from Fitou and the south west coast; and (2) great, inexpensive Chilean wines.

    Thanks.

    TJC

PS: Nix the guests that are clueless about wine. In contrast, I really liked the show with Digg because it’s obvious the guy loves wine and thinks about it. Thinking is good!!!

Great show, you know everyone loves the blind tastings. It’s really a bad weekend to be a Spartan fan. First you crushed their wine and tonight UConn is going to crush their spirit. What are the chances of you doing a full show of Connecticut wines if UConn wins the National Championship? I think it would be awesome for all your CT fans. Thanks

QOTD – No shocker that’s its UConn. Although I’m a diehard Jet and Ranger fan, I’ve got to show the love for UConn. Its the closest thing to a pro team in CT.

Gary, since you are such a huge white wine fan, can you do a show on drinking older whites? The other night I had a 2001 Pinot Gris – “Cuvee Cecil” from Lucien Albrecht from Alsace France and a 2002 Chablis Premier Cru- Domain Louis Moreau. Both outstanding!!!

Wish you would have chosen a Fresno State Wine!!!

Great episode Gary, “worst wine ever on WLTV” was a classic quote. Love the blind tasting format. I’m part owner of a small Italian wine importing company and with all the samples we get of the same varietals we’re forced to blind taste a lot. Tonight it’s with 3 different 04′ Brunellos! Hopefully we’ll see what all this hypes about. Go Uconn!

    Gary,

I recently heard of a winery in New Mexico that makes some great sparkling wines from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in the Champagne style. (The winery is Gruet- anybody had it?)

I’m curious about certain areas in the U.S. where unique micro-climates might exist for making great wines in unexpected places. How about a show on wines from obscure location in the U.S.?

By the way, your face after tasting the Michigan State wine was priceless. I’m a long time lurker- and that face alone was worth a comment today.

This is a brilliant show. Love the brutal honesty. I feel sorry for the wineries, but as you said it’s just one (expert who people trust’s) palette. Tough to see Hacksaw Jim Duggan make an appearance on the Thunder Show! One thing that would have been cool would be to show a 10 second (slo-mo?) replay of your comments after the unveilings. Great show. Loved it man. Thanks for

Okay, I’m bummed because I’m a Michigan native and I got my masters at MSU, but it was still pretty hilarious how you laid into that wine. I go tasting in Michigan when I go home and see my folks. There is some decent stuff in the Traverse City area, but overall, it is pretty brutal. Hi Gary!

This is my first comment, i’ve been a lurker for just over a month so its time to come out of the bushes and expose myself (not literally…obviously) I am really passionate about wine, as well as everything food and drink wise from venison to tea, chips to real ale and everything inbetween. It’s very difficult because I’m struggling to find people to learn off. Watching these shows is so helpful and such an energy filled change to reading books and tasting when i can. I want to make it my career, i’m only 19 so i’m trying to get stuck in. Thanks again Gary

Fun show GV. It gives me great pleasure that the MSU wine came in dead last (even though they did make it to the championship, grr). Great show! I also live in Michigan and try and taste both the local wine and the micro-brew. There is some good stuff coming out of Michigan. In my Humble Opinion it is more in the desert wine area.

I have also lived on the Central Coast of California. Would lie to see some blind tasting between the Central Coast and the Russian River Vally, Napa Areas.

Great idea by questioner: Taste some PX wines.

Take it another step. Cosco wines vs. Wall-Mart wines.

I’m sure there are plenty of others like myself. We buy are wine from big mast sellers. We get lucky a few times a year to go and search for wine direct from the source.

So much wine and so little time to enjoy it all.

Nice show! Sorry that Sparty couldn’t produce (much like in college football), but at least their bball team is gettin’ it done (Big Ten represent)!!! I was amused by the Oklahoma result; moral of the story… vintage matters!

QOTD: Hmmmm… I’ve always been a big fan of The Ohio State University when it comes to sports (and I’m currently being financially supported by them to attend/pursue grad school), but I don’t think this fine institution necessarily provides the best education for undergraduates. My BIG UPS go to Denison University (a small liberal arts college in Ohio), which brings SERIOUS THUNDER! It’s pricey, but is a great value. Great show as always, love the reactions and the description of the wine “tastes like the put sour patch kids in water the put ange in it” classic….

favorite college, Oswego State U in upstate NY, near the finger lake region. Have you reviewed any of the wines from up there. They do have some good ones. Oswego runs a festival every summer called Harbor Fest, I interned for the festival, and my job was to set up a wine tasting booth. I had to go around to the finger lake wineries, taste there wines and get them to come to the festival. What an internship! Wish I turned it into a job..

    Gary,

I have been trying to replicate that Michigan State wine here at home. So far I have found some sour patch kids and have them soaking in water, but I am having a hard time finding anger spray in my local supermarket. Can you recommend any finer wine stores in the greater San Diego metropolitan area that might carry that? Thanks for any help.

QOTD: Very tricky asking for our favorite COLLEGE (read: not university), which makes the answer a no brainer: Dartmouth College, which fought for and won the right to call itself a college in a landmark 1819 U.S. Supreme Court case argued successfully by Dartmouth alum Daniel Webster, Class of 1801. Yes, THE Daniel Webster, as in guy who fought against the devil in that Washington Irving story. Little known fact: Webster won, but afterwards he smelled a little like duct tape ripped off of an old wiffle ball bat.

Looking forward to watching you tape not one, but TWO Thunder Shows at the W Hotel on April 11. Love the show and really appreciate what you do.

Gary, if you do a show based on wines available in Korea I will be over the moon. This would be great not just for the military guys here but us ESL teachers too. Wine is starting to get big here, and Carménère is everywhere (which for me is great).

Love the show, keep up the great work.

    Hey Gary,

Great episode. Finally, as a long time lurker who lives in Seoul working as a teacher at public schools here, I am leaving a comment although I have watched your show religiously since the beginning.

What do you think the wine makers in this episode did or tried to do that really caused them to produce some sub-par wines?

And the same thing as you said with the guy in the army here, if I send you a list of wines could you possibly do a show?

    Keep fighting the good fight,

    Jesse

Not being from the US.. I had no idea college wineries even existed. Seems like a very weird idea! Is this a thing most colleges do for a bit of fun in the local garden.. or is it generally part of a serious course?

First, LOVING the show!!! Can’t remember what show got me hooked but it has been a while. Defiantly liked the wine tasting on the plane, nice way to mix it up and bring the THUNDER at 35,000 feet.

Interesting show. It is funny how different college wines can be. I would have thought that the California college would have done better. Even though you ripped apart three of them, the students at those schools can use it as a real-world learning experience both to help them make better wines and to learn that out in the “real world” they may make a product that not everyone likes and will have to be able to take that criticism.

QOTD: ITHACA COLLEGE…have to support my alma-mater.

GV ~ how do you like that, my home state bringing the Thunder !! Very interesting that NW Wine Academy bested College Cellars who have very serious backing from the wine community in Walla Walla and NW Wine Academy is in South Seattle 4 hours from grape country. Glad you liked the wines and I’ve been saying it for years that Washington makes wines true to the varietals and is making some serious juice.

Qotd: Central Washington U., Go Wildcats !!

I am in the current production class at Northwest Wine Academy (winner of this blind tasting) and we watched this episode in class last night.

We are about 4 hours drive from where the fruit is grown, but we head over early in the am, pick the donated grapes ourselves (generally), then head back to our winery to crush. The majority of us are 40+ in age and it’s great fun…

Though we didn’t have a hand in making the 2006 Merlot that won, we all clapped and cheered when our label was revealed at the end. Thanks for making our night!
