The Great one in the Heezy? Wow. I’m speechless.

Does anyone remember that old cartoon with Michael Jordan, Bo Jackson, and Wayne Gretzky, going around and saving the world? That was awesome.

    WOW. Respect.

You know its coming, how in the world did you convince Wayne to go on the show? and you caught him immediately after the season ended too!

Only suggestion, Mr. Gretzky could use a mic!

Impressive play booking the Great One, Gary!! You should have brought out Janet Jones, too. Does Wayne know Greg Norman? He could be your next guest on the athlete-turned-winemaker roster.

Gary, what’s your issue with Opus One? I’ve never had it, but my friends swear by it. You’re not a fan?

QOTD: No, they will not win. Nor should they.

Wow… one hell of a guest. Seen Gretsky doing some golf stuff and he’s obviously a likeable and friendly guy, kudos to you for landing someone like that.

Gary- you were gushing! Wayne was a great guest- loved his honesty and humility. Sounds like he surrounded himself with some good people to put together this effort.

Is the Icewine available in the U.S.?

QOTD: Phillies will repeat. Eagles will be inspired and finally win a SB.

Wow, who wasn’t surprised when they saw the title? Pretty amazing to see a living legend just sitting there and tasting wines with GV (a future living legend himself). Definitely a nice ep and for once Gary let the guest finish his sentences (!).

    Great details to this episode..

    Gary drinks..
AJ and Brian change operator duty on the fly (hockey term)..
    Billy Smith anecdote was great..
Awesome rendering of Wayne’s image in the background (burnt on wood then stained??)..
Great insight on Barrasso and Fuhr..
    Gary liked all the wines..
    A big sneaker..
Strongly suspect that Wayne was a couple of sheets to the wind (I love him anyway)..

You have my vote to amend Wayne’s nickname to “The Greatest”

GV, Top ten show. Got to hand it to you. You rocked it out this time. Great show with the great one. If the pitching holds up, and they do have the guns to do it, yes, the Yanks will win the world series in their new ball park.

  49. April 16, 2009

    Wardo202

Sweet episode. Makes me want to find NHL ‘94 on Genesis and start racking up goals with #99 against Mario Lemieux’s Penguins. And you actually thought his wine was pretty decent!

“Acid wins championships” – I’ll remember that.

QOTD:I hate jinxing MY YANKS, but I sure as hell hope they’ll win the World Series this year. I also hope that garbage from Boston doesn’t make the playoffs.

Awesome show. This is in my top 2 shows ever. I love hockey. It’s the most exciting and underrated sport in the US. If you love hockey, you have to love The Great One.

Great show, I grew up in Alberta in the 80’s and Wayne was my hero, to combine wine with Wayne is surreal. Can’t wait to try the Napa Cab (Gary will you be stocking it at WL?) Jays will wine the World Series. One of these years.

  56. April 16, 2009

QOTD: Not the Yanks this year but the Mets may have a chance!

    Gary,
Big fan, have been watching the show on podcast while taking the subway home for 6 months now. Never posted a comment until now but had to say how cool it was to see you talking wine with THE GREAT ONE!! As crazy hockey fan this was awesome.
Just trying to get deep in to wine and understand how to identify all the different flavors and aromas you talk about.

Outstanding show GV… From a diehard Canucks fan (the team that 99 scored more points on that ANY team in NHL history) I have to say that was an outstanding episode!

99 said it is goaltending that will win the cup this year and even hinted the Canucks can do it. We will look back at this episode in 2 months and realize he was right. GO CANUCKS GO!!!

  62. April 16, 2009

Good show. Really cool looking office.

QOTD: Absolutely not. It’s not that I’m a Yankee hater (I’m actually a Red Sox hater, I hope they don’t win another game all season), it’s just they aren’t that good this year. Go M’s.

    QOTD…Geez I hope nope

    Scott - Boston

    HILARIOUS!
I’ve seen you trash wines in front of the makers and have mad respect for you because of it. But this is really your Greatest guest!!! No matter how fair and impartial you want to be with your audience, I’m not sure how you didn’t score at least one of the wines a “99″! I mean in ‘83-’84, if you include his 13 playoff goals, he scored 100 goals!!! 100 friggin’ goals that year!!! Yikes.

Unfortunately, having Great guests and telling them the truth is just never going to wash (even if you reeeeeeealy like the wine). Continue to have awesome guests, and we’ll continue to read between the lines and be entertained (and educated).

    100 goals, yeesh…

    Big fan,

Can’t answer the question of the day because I don’t follow baseball. But that was an awesome show. Gretzky has been a hero of mine since I started watching hockey and followed the Oilers in the mid 80’s. Gonna be hard to top that show.

  71. April 16, 2009

    Paul

Great show as always! I love shows where you have guest, it’s great to see you play off each other and really adds an element to the show. The 10% ice wine is an interesting play. I’d love to see what that taste like.

Wayne: I think it’s fantastic that you’re passionate about others and are supporting a wonderful foundation with the fame that you have. Moreover, I love how you were conscious about your name and wanted it on a product that was quality. It shows awesome integrity. I have to admit though, I’m not a hockey, or sports, fan. However, that doesn’t mean I can’t give you some love for helping out others. Kudos to you my friend.

Holy crap! How’d you get Wayne on the show??? Great show, he came across very real and not pretentious at all. Go Hurricanes!

QOTD: Good Lord, let’s hope not.

    who’s next…MJ?

  73. April 16, 2009

    Steve Bjerklie

Gary, someone needs to do a much better job mic’ing your guests, especially when you do the show from a remote location. The single mic at the camera isn’t getting the job done. Invest in a couple of lavalier mics and a mixer so we can better hear these folks and you too!

  74. April 16, 2009

    Junior Vol

Great guest but personally since I’m not a huge hockey fan, I was a little bored. Were you intimidated by the Great One or were you just on a Huge High by being in his presence? I don’t blame you if you were. But I didn’t think you brought the 100% Thunder that you normally do. Hey, I’m from the South and if Peyton Manning was my guest, I might be a little less focused too.

As a Canadian expat, a huge hockey fan (and love him or hate him who didn’t marvel at No.99) and a wine loooooooooover, I am absolutely over the top stoked about this episode. The Great One on winelibrarytv! What a get. If they haven’t yet heard of winelibrarytv, all my friends and family still living in the great white north, they will now. Thanks, Gary for yet again informing us about wines we have yet to know and for letting us in on a little bit of the private world of an icon of the sports world.

Great show. Thanks Wayne, we’re really looking forward to trying your wines. This is an opportunity to thank you Wayne for always being a class act and nice person. Years ago (when you were with the Kings) I sent you a hockey card to sign for me. I never really expected a reply – 2 weeks later I received the signed card back. That was a wonderful day. Also, a few years ago we stopped at your restaurant in Toronto with the kids and we were fortunate enough to be there at a time your were as well. You stayed around late into your evening and signed for every single person that hung around. My kids who were 8 and 6 at the time to this day have the autographed picture you signed for them hanging on the wall in their homes. Thanks so much and best wishes to you and your family.

Unbelievable. The Great one on WLTV. This has automatically become my favorite episode ever. Little bit of weird coincidence that Wayne shows up on ep 660, little Mario Lemieux action. Wish I could find some of those 99 wines here in Hawaii. PLEASE let us know how we can win some autographed Gretzky stuff!!! Wayne has always been an outstanding person and been such an ambassador to hockey.

Awesome show. The first time I saw Wayne play was for the Soo Greyhounds in the late 70’s before he went to the WHA. I was about 11 or 12 at the time. Later saw him play many times with the Oilers whenever they would visit Winnipeg, where I lived when I was in high school. Great memories. I miss going to see games back in Canada. You can’t beat the fans there.

QOTD: No way. They’ll blow it just like they always do.

First……… The Question of the day. Who cares?
    Second…….. Wayne Gretzky!
Ranks with the greatest of all time.
Because I find football, basketball, and certainly baseball, not very interesting; my sports life is centered around tennis, golf, soccer, and oh yeah…….hockey. Particularly at this time of the year.
Could not agree more with his comments regarding the man in goal.
Case in point………the Caps, (last night against the Rangers).
    Still time though………
    Go Wayne…..
    Co Caps!

    Jay Gould

    Great interview Gary!

  103. April 16, 2009

    Robert Howells

QOTD: The Yankees will win. It was great to hear Wayne and you mention the Canucks. Luongo will take our team to the Stanley Cup. When Vancouver hoists the cup over their heads I think it would be awesome for Gary to tape an episode of WLTV with the team and drink wine from Lord Stanley. Wayne, I remember when you were on Alan Thickes talk show in Vancouver in the 1980’s.

  104. April 16, 2009

    Gio

Great show. He doesn’t seem to be much into the sniffy sniff. One thing… you mentioned a little rubber action in the Riesling and I thought you were going to reference a hockey puck, yet you described it as a bmx skid mark. Oh well.

  105. April 16, 2009

    SS Chris

    Wayne didn’t mention the spreadsheet…..what a douche!! :)

  106. April 16, 2009

    p.staats

Great show Gary. I think its interesting when celebrities like Wayne demonstrate a diversity of interest aside from their main line of work. It definitely makes them more accessible. For Wayne’s wine, going on WLTV works to authenticate it more than a traditional TV-blurb would. Gary’s brand is authentic, and through it Wayne’s taste for quality becomes much more so.

Great stuff, gotta try the wine!

QOTD: I want them to win, but they won’t. I know that new 103′ HD screen in center field would distract me as a player, ha.

  107. April 16, 2009

    Pepel

awesome show! nothing like having a pro-star on your show. gotta call mj and bo jackson! Nice to know the great one’s wines are great. I would love to get an autographed bottle!!!

    qotd: yes

  108. April 16, 2009

    Pepel

nice to note I got comment #99! how bout that? :)

  109. April 16, 2009

    Bryan

Gary…Epic show with the the Great One…Wayne Gretzky. I can’t wait to try the #99 Cabernet. Wayne…the Yankees will not will the WS this year.

    Go Coyotes!!!!!

  110. April 16, 2009

    Dr. Mike

    Wayne-

As a product of youth hockey and a wine enthusiast I’m very impressed with this project. I hope it really takes off.

    QOTD: Yes.

  111. April 16, 2009

    ZJK

HOLY SH*T Gary this was CLASSIC… i could barly watch because i was smiling the whole time. I live in st.louis and i remember when #99 played with #16 (Brett Hull) and the good ol’ days of BLUES HOCKEY…

I love this episode and smiled instantly when i saw his face, i cannot describe how cool it was to see his office and just being able to spend 25mins with the great one. THANKS A LOT

    QOTD: I hate the Yankees

  112. April 16, 2009

    Karen Wickes

The Great One is still living up to his name! Wayne didn’t
mean this season did he? I’m a fan but I don’t think this will be
the year for the Yankees. Great show guys!!

  113. April 16, 2009

    DF

QOTD: No, it’s going to be an unusual team this year, like the Cubs (???!!!).

Big ups to Wayne for going on the show and for being so gracious. And being a Carolina Hurricanes fan, I appreciated the mention of Ward and Staal. I know the Devils beat the face off them last night, so I hope your dad celebrated. I hope they can prove Wayne right and at least give NJ a run for their money.

Bigger than Oprah? You’re on your way, GV.

  114. April 16, 2009

    David Benjamin

I once thought your father was the best guest you’ve ever had. Make him #2 to the “Great One”. Respected him as a hockey player and respect him as one of the good guys. Great job landing Mr. Gretzky.

  115. April 16, 2009

    I’m shocked by his knowledge~!

Very Doubtful…… Wayne knows it’s Toronto
    What a jokester.

  117. April 16, 2009

    Bobby P

Gary, awesome show. Loved how enthusiastic Wayne was throughout the whole episode. Also, I hear Gregg Popovich is a huge wine fan. It would be great if you could have him on the show. I know you guys can do it!

    Qotd: Yankees? no. heh.

  118. April 16, 2009

    peter_grigio

Brilliant! Loved the show, fantastic guest. To answer his question, NO. The Florida Marlins will beat the Red Sox in the Fall Classic. Now there’s a prediction.

  119. April 16, 2009

    Bobby Mac

Best show ever even with the fill in camera guy. I’m a huge hockey fan and grew up watching “The Great One” play. I recently coached high school hockey and always used Gretzky quotes in my locker room talks. Easily my favorite athlete ever and thats saying something since I’m from the land of Favre.

    QOTD: I sure hope NOT!

  120. April 16, 2009

    Derek F.

AWESOME Show guys…I really loved this one. I am also a hockey fan, watching the Bruins first playoff game as we speak…Yes I am from Boston…LOL!!

QOTD: Well seeing that I am from Boston you probably know my answer to that question…I will leave it at that :-)

  121. April 16, 2009

    John

The very first web based show we watched together as a family. Simply awesome.

  122. April 16, 2009

    Gus Clemens

Wayne Gretsky takes a pass from Gary Vaynerchuk… he shoots… he SCORES! Surprised Gary did not do total suck-up sellout and rate the Cab 99 points.
QOTD: Yes. New Yankee Stadium. A Rod returns. Money talks, beats Mets in seven in battle of new stadiums.

  123. April 16, 2009

    Terence Fox

Wow, what a great episode a what a great guy Wayne Gretzky seems to be. There are so many stupid things a former athlete can do with his money, but putting Canadian wines on more wine lists and getting Americans to give them a shot is definitely one of the best I can think of. Wayne, couldn’t agree more about Steve Nash. Gary, way to drop some knowledge. This is definitely going to be the episode I show to people who are new to wine and your program from now on.

QOTD: I predict a Mets-style meltdown. The Yankees do not make the playoffs. This is the toughest division in baseball and they will collapse under the pressure!

  124. April 16, 2009

    Tommy Vernieri

    Great show Gary.

    QOTD: Nope.

  125. April 16, 2009

    Brad Geddes

Great to sit here with my collection of No. 99 wines – especially as a fan of my hometown hero – Brantford’s greatest export!

Gary – your enthusiasm is contagious – it was great to be in the UBMS audience when you shared your thoughts about WLTV two weeks ago – I’ve been hooked ever since.

You scored big time with the Great One! Well done guys.

  126. April 16, 2009

    Pierre C

    Wow! What a nice show!

He really still is the greatest!

    Thanks

    A fellow canadian

  127. April 16, 2009

    Doug from New Orleans

Love the show! Wayne was great, honest and to the point. He comes across a class act. Good luck and thanks.

    QOTD: no way

  128. April 16, 2009

    Nick R.

Great show GaryV and WayneG. I think it was great that Wayne was able to take pride in his wines. He may not like some as much as others, heh, but it’s good that he appreciates his product, and doing it for the right reasons. I am looking to be able to sample some of these wines, and you got me intrigued about the cab!
*side note* very hard to hear, i agree with the mic problems needing to be fixed

    Qotd: Not this year.

  129. April 16, 2009

    Harry

Glad you’re getting to live out your dreams Gary. Good show.
I’m glad to see Gretzky is using his fame for good causes, and will keep an eye out for his wines.
QOTD: no the yankees will go down early in the playoffs.

  130. April 16, 2009

    Stuart Burke

Awesome show! Lots of fun and I hope to have an opportunity to try any of the #99 wines soon.

QOTD: Yanks win the World Series? No F’en-WAY! Go Sox!!

  131. April 16, 2009

    RobW

WOW! Great respect for Mr. Gretzky… who truly seems to be a genuine CLASS ACT! I definitely will have to try your sig. wines and am thrilled to hear that some of the proceeds are going to a great cause.

Gary — how did you land such a GIANT as this?! Do tell! :) Awesome show… can’t wait to see how you try to top this ep. Thank you both!

QOTD: nope… don’t see it happening this year.

  132. April 16, 2009

    Kevin C

QOTD: They’ll finish behind Toronto! Some love for the Doc Halladay here!

Thanks for getting this together. True greatness is a rare commodity and you, my friends, were in its presence tonight! Thanks Wayne!

  133. April 16, 2009

    Bobbie

AWESOME show Gary.. as a southern Ontario resident and Ontario wine LOVER I am very happy to see this episode. The Great One.. WOW. Lucky you!

  134. April 16, 2009

    Sandeep

I have so much love for this ep, that I had to pop the comment cherry.

The Canadian connection in general is usually enough, but you’ve got #99 (the G.O.A.T.) and a shout out for Steve Nash. There’s an inside glimpse to the Gretzky home, a big win for Niagara wines… it’s just too much.

I’ve been watching for a while, and won’t stop any time soon. This episode was awesome, and in case Wayne’s reading this… you are the man. Good luck with the wines and I’ll keep an eye peeled at the LCBO.

    Thanks from Toronto.

  135. April 16, 2009

    Christopher Scoggin

It will probably get me banned from WLTV ;) but I don’t like or watch sports. As such sports stars hold no special place for me so Mr Gretzky is just a rich guy who got into wine. What makes this episode so cool is that he obviously took this very seriously and put together a great team and product. Bravo Mr Gretzky. If these get US distribution I will have to try and get the Riesling (the Cab is out of my price range).

QOTD: As above I don’t follow sports so I have no idea.

  136. April 16, 2009

    AndrewLyle

Congrats on such a distinguished guest.

Thanks for always being real, and not being afraid to tell the bold truth to “The Great One” to his face. That fact strengthens my trust in you as a critic

  137. April 16, 2009

    Peter

Gary – great show – but – episode 660?!?!? Noooo, that should have been the Mario show (#66)..

    this should have been 990!

come visit Niagara. you’ll love it. Grape and Wine festival, two weeks in September.

Or come on your way to or from the Jet vs. Bills in Toronto.

  138. April 16, 2009

    Donna Kim-Brand

Wow! Just had to call over my 15 year old goalie son to hear The Great One wax lyrical on the importance of goalies to the team…no surprise, Marlowe was as interested in the wine as the comments!(Me too! Let me at that Cab!) Thrilled to know Wayne is involved in wines for such a purposeful cause- maybe he’ll have to work up his own hockey wine vocab…slap-shot zing, locker room mustiness, sweaty glove acidity, hint of Gretsky! Love that Gretsky is still a gentleman. May his legend live on! Thanks Gary!

  139. April 16, 2009

    KennyMac

Despite the fact that, oh those many years ago, the Great One and his Edmonton Oilers used to destroy my Vancouver Canucks, I still respect Wayne immensely. Absolutely great show!

  140. April 16, 2009

    Bill

Gretz buzzed and a with a belly, makes me feel good about myself :) .

I’m a huge hockey fan, and Gretz changed the game and gave us so many great memories. Cool seeing you on GV’s show.

    GO RANGERS!

    quotd: Yes!

  141. April 16, 2009

    RieslingRon

    Gary,

Great show. You have raised the level of your guests by leaps and bounds. Well done.

Kudos to Wayne for a nice selection of wines and much success with your foundation.

Go Rangers……..I haven’t watched much hockey since Wayne retired, but have always been a Rangers fan.

QOTD: Yes, I think they will turn things around once A-rod returns and the pitching staff gets there feet on the ground.

  142. April 16, 2009

    Vinofan

Another classic episode, loved “The Great One.” Like you I’m surprised that the wines were that good. Not just another rich guy that starts making vino with his name on it.

  143. April 16, 2009

    Paul

Great! I recommend you invest in boom mic.

  144. April 16, 2009

Wow. I was stunned. Unbelievable. Anyone else having trouble hearing them though? I’ll come back and post QOTD, etc. later.

  145. April 16, 2009

QOTD: No, I don’t think the Yanks will win, unfortunately I don’t think my Red Sox will win either though.

  146. April 16, 2009

    Harry Gabrielson

Wow the great one in the flesh i am truly jealous.

and of course the yankee’s will win their 27th world championship this year.

  147. April 16, 2009

    Brian Smith

How Awesome is that??? Wow great show. Wayne thanks for coming on the show, it was a pleasure to watch. I am definitely interested in trying your wines, the fact that a portion of the money goes to your foundation is “Icing” on the cake.

  148. April 16, 2009

    Agent Orange

Wayne, your labels are very classy. We like.

Waynernation. It’s right next door to the Vaynernation.

QOTD: No world series for the Yanks. Bad karma.

  149. April 16, 2009

    @billygadol

Gary, this is so fantastic, as your star rises so does the quality of your guests. I’m a huge fan of #99 and to answer his question, there’s no f&*@ing way George Steinbrenner sees another ring! At least that’s my hope. Go Red Sox!!

  150. April 16, 2009

    Laurie in VT

That was fun! It’d be great to try those wines. I’m also impressed with his foundation work.
Wayne is very soft spoken – or at least in comparison to Gary!

    QOTD: No

  151. April 16, 2009

    Alan

That was amazing for a huge hockey fan like myself. Rock on, great to see Wayne rockin it with you Gary!!!

    GO Devils!!!!

  152. April 16, 2009

    Chris Bartow

Amazing show with the Great One. You can tell he really cares about the product he puts out even if he isn’t a wine expert.

QOTD: Yankees will blow it this year, like they have the last few.

  153. April 16, 2009

    DrEdwardo

QOTD: Money can’t buy me love … nor a pennant!!

Wayne: I hope, and by the way you talk I think you do, really trust your winemaking partner, because you have product categories (e.g. riesling & icewine) that you really don’t particularly like yourself but are relying on him to tell you they are good enough to bear your name.

  154. April 16, 2009

    Ronans Recording Show

What a score for a guest!!!! I am jealous. I wish the sound quality was better though. Tough to hear The Great One speak on my lap top.

  155. April 16, 2009

    manonthemoon

Now that really was probably the most famous person to ever grace WLTV. Not the hugest (sp) hocky fan, even though I casually pull for the Flames ever since the great red beards of Gary Roberts and crew in the late 80s, but this guys was and still is awesome. “Great one” you are the man, even if you were in a horrible early 90’s cartoon.

QOTD: No, the world series rings will be going across town to my Mets ;) .

  156. April 16, 2009

    BrandonP

Great job booking the great one on your show, it is funny that you taught him about sniffing wines and he drinks gaja and opus one. It must be nice.
QOTD- no, the cars will win
Wayne you were a great guest and seem to be fun and down to earth.

  157. April 16, 2009

    Vanessa

Cool show. Funny and informative. I wish the riesling was available in the u.s. but the cab sounds interesting…

    QOTD: HELL NO!! GO SOX!!

  158. April 16, 2009

    O Canada!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great show Gary! What a surprise! Thanks.

I’m no hockey connoisseur, but I can acknowledge a legend, especially when he’s from Canada.

Will seek his products, most of them being available up here.

QOTD: Sorry….no idea….not a baseball fan (the Yankees are a baseball team, right, eh?)

    Luvz!

  159. April 16, 2009

Great guest! I’d certainly try the cab!

  160. April 16, 2009

So I just finished the episode and I just have one thing to say. Gary Vaynerchuk makes me smile. He makes my day fun and I absolutely dread the day he quits putting videos and showing his character online. Thank you GaryVee.

    QOTD: Yes. Simple as that.

  161. April 16, 2009

Audio sucked (shame on you Mott), but show was great!

    Damn the Yankees.

Gary, I always tell myself that Ill just watch your show for second and end up getting caught in it. Im a huge hockey fan (Go Caps) and it is awesome to see 99 and his wine project. Good show, hopefully I can find some no. 99 in Maryland.

QOTD-300 million dollar offseaon and they look worse than the O’s- I say they barely make the playoffs in a late season push.

  166. April 16, 2009

    Rob Csenar

Gary, awesome job hanging out with The Great One.

    1. No to the Yankees

    2. Wayne, best of luck in the desert with your young team. For this year, go Blackhawks!

  167. April 16, 2009

    Lee Ann

Gary, Wayne, white wine and hockey, are you kidding? I’ve picked the ice wine whites in the okanagan valley in BC, special stuff. Glad to see you agree

  168. April 16, 2009

    Jim Sereney

    Gary,

As a Canadian, I have to say this episode rocked for me! All the talk about hockey and Canadian wines…too cool!

I’m fairly knew to the Wine Library, and I was wondering if you’ve ever reviewed wines from the Niagara region.

When I first saw The Wayne Gretzky wines, I HAD to try one but wasn’t expecting much. The No. 99 Merlot that I tried was actually a pleasant surprise.

I’ll have to see if I can find that Napa Valley Cab.

QOTD: The Yankees win the World Series?…..No way! But they’ll probably do better than my beloved Blue Jays.

  169. April 16, 2009

    boingoal

Epic show today!! I’m a huge hockey and wine fan. Wayne we miss you in Los Angeles, our Kings have been cellar dwellers for alot of years now. Nothing wrong with the cellar as long as there is wine in it. Gary cut him some slack about the sniffy sniff, when your drinking champange out of the Stanley Cup you don’t care what it smells like. Keep bringing the Thunder GV!

    QOTD Angels

    See ya on the Thundercruise!

  170. April 16, 2009

    Phil G

Wow, quite a shock to see who today’s guest was. That was a lot of fun to watch. Very glad to see that #99 puts such an emphasis on quality for his wines. Also good to see help going to kids who need it.

QOTD – as a big time Yankees fan, I want them to win, but think they will fall short in the ALCS.

Also, I think the Rangers will find a way to beat the Caps as Henrik will make some magic happen.

  171. April 16, 2009

    canadapete

Had to leave a comments, as a fellow Canadian, as a huge hockey fan, and as a big fan of Wayne Gretzky the man. I always avoid celebrity wines, but now I will certainly have to try some of his brand! Thanks for the great show.

    QOTD. No. Not this year.

  172. April 16, 2009

    Frank

Are you freaking kidding me? Wayne Gretzky? That guy?

Nobody is a guest like him. No one.

I can’t go on. Freaking’ Gretzky? What?

Gary you are the upper echelon.

    Freaking Gretzky?

    What!?!

  173. April 16, 2009

    Jesse

Ah! the Great one! My brother and I ran into The Great One at Sherwood Country Club a few years ago and he truely was a great guy.

QOTD: They would win if not for the Angels defeating them in 4 games.

  174. April 16, 2009

    Wyo Tim

    QOTD: CUBS CUBS CUBS

Surprisingly good wines from a celebrity. PLEASE film the skating with the great one.

  175. April 16, 2009

    Wendy

What a pleasant surprise! Bill and I hope to try some of these wines. Good for you, Wayne. Perhaps a visit to Ontario (from Quebec) will be in order. Bill just got back from working in Long Island and made a side trip tp Winelibrary where he purchased two bottles and a t-shirt for me. It was Easter Sunday. I am so jealous. Someday I will get there. Thanks for bringing the thunder!!

  176. April 16, 2009

    Scott EJ

I love that this show is 660. Which, upside down/reversed is: 099….the great ones number. Kinda, but you get what I mean.

Very cool that Wayne is into the vino. And, yes, his office kicks ass. Too bad your Dad couldn’t make it. He would have floored.

QOTD: Sorry Great One….no. But, the Cubs will.

  177. April 16, 2009

    */^_^\*

‘great’ episode….good to see those in a position to do so giving back to the community.

    QOTD: i hope not.

canadian riesling…..mmmmmm…..i think i found a new wine investigation assignment….

  178. April 16, 2009

    Josh

Wayne Gretzky!!! Awesome episode, but it looks like The Great One just got in from a day at the golf course…too many beers and too much sun. Keep up the Canadian exposure.

Great episode. We had Wayne on our premiere episode of Craving Confidence as well.

Great show with the Great One!

Yankees!?!? I hope not…I don’t think I could take the Yankee fans returning to their sensee of entitlement like that…

  181. April 16, 2009

    Rich Gould

Awesome episode Gary. One of the best yet for sure.

QOTD: no. nobody can afford tickets this year, so lack of fans will demoralize the team. Blue Jays look good.

  182. April 16, 2009

    Jonathan Fingas

Wow, Gretzky — and we’re even looking at some good Canadian wine from the man himself. Definitely one for the record books.

By far my favourite show yet! Gretzky was my favourite player growing up! Thanks for doing this show! I’m pretty sure I suggested this months ago when you asked for ideas for shows…I think that deserves a free wristband or something? ;)
QOTD: Jays are going to make a run for it this year! (to be honest, I’m too into the NHL playoffs right now to have a clue what’s happening in baseball)

What an honor! I’m sure you were thrilled to be in the great one’s presence! I was thrilled, and I’m a couple thousand miles away. Maybe Wayne should be thrilled to be in your presence too, since you’re becoming quite the celeb as well.
QOTD: No, the Yankees don’t have a chance this year.

  193. April 16, 2009

    CatchtheBeaver

THE WAAAAAYYNER!!! Was it not said that everyone who watches this will recieve an autographed bottle?! I don’t even mind if mine is a half bottle! What a thrill to see The Great One on WLTV! QOTD: no chance.

  194. April 16, 2009

    Peter (Mila's Dad)

I’d score the show a 93+: balance between having such a classy guy like the Great one (sweet) and camera/sound that was about as ‘raw’ as you could get (acid) (but it worked!)-Gary balancing his awe for Wayne and his take on the wines–Everytime Gary went for the sniffy sniff Wayne was gulping his glass down, absolutely hilarious.

Like the last response, Gary, and this show, just puts a smile on my face, no matter what.

QOTD: No, because they don’t have enough Nick Swishers, their middle relief is weak, and expensive starting pitching is notorious for not being able to deliver(apologies to J. Santana, who actually does)

  195. April 16, 2009

    cancelit

Hey Gary, Ask Wayne why he didn’t follow through and buy the old Chicago Black Hawks old Scoreboard. Everybody in town thought that he was going to save the scoreboard. He told the world he was going to buy it?

VERY Cool show today! When I was growing up, I got to watch the Oilers first hand as they started their dynasty with Wayne.

Awesome show. I loved the interplay and Wayne seems like a very likeable, down to earth, character. It is truly refreshing, as you mentioned, to see great quality come with a big name.

    QOTD: no way!

  199. April 16, 2009

    Dominus

It looks like Mr Gretzky likes ALOT of red wine. :)

QOTD: Please, it will be lucky if they stay out of the basement let alone make it to the playoffs and win the World Series. Talk about getting nothing in return for your investment.

    Go CAPS!

    Cheers!

    GOD I hope the Yankees don’t win…

Wayne, it was awesome seeing you on the show. Obviously you have had a great career, and post-hockey career. Wow.

GREAT SHOW!!!! Close contest between him and you dad for best show of the year. I suggest a showdown with Wayne and Sasha when WG comes to your shop.

#99 means everything to the sport of HOCKEY and I am stoked (but not at all surprised) to see WG protecting (and adding to) the brand.

I wish my son had a chance to see special athletes like Lance Armstrong, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Michael Jordan and WG dominate their sports. We were very fortunate to witness true excellence.

Stock it!!!! I will buy it all!!!

Congrats Gary, you must be extremely proud, but you really said it best when you tweeted comparing lamaze class. A true man.

I was just as excited as you were the entire video. You are definitely going were you envision when what you build is attracting great people like Wayne Gretzky and you seem to be a much bigger hockey fan than I thought. Who’s your Stanley Cup pick?

BTW my favourite pair of dress pants are, in fact, Wayne Gretzky… his clothing line. He really does it all and extremely well.

Your next great Canadian athlete on the show: Mike Weir. Ever try his wine? I haven’t, but I do love the Inniskillin and Jackson-Triggs you spoke of.

    QOTD: No way.

  207. April 17, 2009

Cool show + guest. I’ve never met Mr. Gretsky, but was a big fan when he played. Seemed like he was a bit toasted for this interview though …

    QOTD: God, I hope not.

    How can this be beat??

I’ve got one word for you: Michael Air Jordan………but then again, it may be a tie because they’re both uncanny.

    Best guest yet bar none.

What a tremendously gracious man, Wayne is! The GREAT ONE still certainly applies as a handle based on his personality and character. I’m so impressed that all of the proceeds are being used to do good work. Got to get my hands on these wines someday!

  211. April 17, 2009

    Brian Rossi

HUUUUUUUGE Episode Gary, Wayne Gretzky is up there with Ruth, Tiger and Pele! Sounds like someone who has a sense of his brand and what it means to the marketplace. You’ll have to get some of his wines into the library. How can you betray your state by being a Ranger fan?

QOTD: Yankees in 6 the slump will be over

  212. April 17, 2009

    J Crazy

    The Great One.

    QOTD: Yup, sometime.

    Awesomest episode.

  213. April 17, 2009

    John Rogers

I was very surprised great show and very good wines. As stated, alot of times a famous person name is used but the product doesn’t live up to the hype.

QOTD: I hope not the Yankees for a long time dominated.

  214. April 17, 2009

    Don

THE GREAT ONE!!! Wow… what a surprise. Gary, it looked like you were having a blast with Gretzky on the Thunder Show, great stuff. I don’t know if it was the lighting but that Napa Cab had great dark color, I’m surprised you didn’t mention that.

Question of the Day: No, the Yankees will not win the World Series.

  215. April 17, 2009

    the wine pixie

How wonderful to see our Canadian rieslings again receiving good marks; Mr. Gretzky is clearly a man who is honest to a fault.

The fact that he has his name in the wine industry for charity and still actually puts out a quality product makes a person wonder why one would ever spend their money on something as boring/inane as Yellowtail or Barefoot (I’m not exactly sure what the US $$ equivalents would be). More people should be so generous with their celebrity status.

QOTD: I have no idea. I remember watching Wayne Gretzky play hockey on TV when I was a kid and that’s about as far as my knowledge of sports goes (even though Steve Nash is from the same town as me). Yankees? What sport is that?

  216. April 17, 2009

    J Mize

Greatest show of all time! The Great One is truly a Great Guy!
QOTD: No, all that money does not always result in winning. The Yankees have no heart anymore, Jeter is the only true Yankee.

  217. April 17, 2009

    David T (@ONUMello)

Bear with me, I’ve got a lot of thoughts today.
-Overall this was a great episode & a great guest. Lots of good hockey knowledge! I love football, but it was nice to switch it up for a change. He really seemed to not care much for smelling the wine, though.
-AJ did a good job with the camera, but he’s no Mott.
-Speaking of cameras, was this the flip cam? Something was different today: both the volume was softer than normal and the video stream not as smooth.
-Was this the first episode where you swallowed every time?
QOTD: I hope not, not a fan.

QOTD: No way Jose, my beloved Yanks aren’t gonna do it this year.

I REAAALLY want to see you do a blind taiste test with these and some others mixed in, im sure its good…. but as a wine consumer, Id like to see how it matches up.. get to it mott

For me, this was the single greatest WLTV ever. As a Canadian lad, I idolized Wayne Gretzky though my formative years, and those feelings linger with me today. I watch Hockey Night in Canada with my small twin girls now, and wonder how they will remember hockey as adults. I also really apreciate your show and your efforts since I started watching a couple of years ago, (met you at SF #500). It was an almost indescribable pleasure to see him on your show. So thank you for the show. I look forward to buying a bottle of the Icewine. If I could get one autographed – that would be the bomb:)

OK, enough fan-boy. You were dissing on my Canucks, Vaynerchuk! In 2004 we were one third period goal post from sending the Rangers to obscurity! (My second favorite player of all time is Pavel Bure). Keep it up and we’ll have to drop the gloves my friend:)

Big G, Wow, the Great one. You are reaching a new level every week. The Book deal now this? It’s good to be Gary V. Oh, but wait Next month the biggest moment of your life is still to come…

Gretzky was already w/ the Kings…but he’s the only reason I watched Hockey back then. My buddy was from Edmonton and he got me started but Gretzky and the Kings kept me tuned in.
Now, it’s Modano and the Stars!

QOTD back at ya: Will the TX Rangers ever have another winning season?????

  231. April 17, 2009

the 05 Napa Cab didn’t come from Burgess. I sold it to him. It was from another winery. And I had to beat the $$$$ out of him. I mean beat it out of him…..not cool.

Another great show. Even in Ireland, we know of the great man. He is a true star and a class act. Great to see that the wines stack up. Great to see the pride he has in the quality. Inspired to try a red icewine (if I can find one in Ireland. Great show Gary. Fire that first cameraman though ;-)

    QOTD : Yes.

I would love to see these wines in your store Gary. I order from the cuvee a lot, and toured a few when i was up in Canada. The shiraz icewine is one of my favorites!!

    ! Gretzky Scores !
I used to love hearing that after goals, looks like he scored again with these wines. One of my favorite hockey players, along with Gordie Howe and Mark Messier.

Cool episode, and I have to be honest, I didn’t know he made wines; must seek them in wine shops.

Good fortune for you on this amazing endeavor Mr. Gretzky.

  238. April 17, 2009

    Svante Adermark

Wow, I loved to see Gretzky on the show. As a Swede and a hockey fan, I got to see him beat Sweden in the world championships several times, brings back memories…

My guess on episode 666: Evil Gary the Wine Nerd will make an appearance.

Awesome to have the Great One on the show!

  240. April 17, 2009

    Robert

Great episode, now the real question. Is these wines avalible in Sweden? I have a friend who´s birthday is coming up and he is a real hockey nerd just like me and this would be a perfect gift for him. We both grew up during the Gretzky era and he is really into wines, so this would be a perfect gift.

Gotta love the internet, I live in sweden and without internet all this probly would have gone missed. So big thanks

    Beverly

GREAT SHOW!!! What a nice guy! Yep, it’s in the running for the best show ever! Wayne sounded like he really knew what he was talking about…that’s nice. It’s so smart that he’s safe-guarding his name legacy by making a quality product.

Thanks Gary for bring us this great show…you both rock!!!

  242. April 17, 2009

    Daniel Kemp

Awesome episode Gary. One thing that’s really cool is that when you turn “660″ around you get “099″, and 99 is Wayne’s hockey jersey number.

Wine Library TV just gets better and better.

  243. April 17, 2009

  244. April 17, 2009

I’m probably the longest lurker here- it would take someone like Wayne to get me out of my shell. Good episode. Wayne seems totally like a down to earth guy. Funny how he doesn’t really know a whole lot about wine yet owns multiple vineyards- oh, to be that rich…

  245. April 17, 2009

    Johnny2Sheds

GREAT show! But, as one who has lived nearly his entire life in the Pittsburgh area and grew up and remains a Penguins fan, I am saddened to see Wayne Gretsky become the first hockey player to appear as a guest on WLTV. No offense to Wayne; he’s the second greatest hockey player I’ve ever seen and is obviously sincere in his efforts to have his name attached to a quality product and raise money for a worthy cause. But, Gary, you of all people should be aware that Mario Lemieux is an avid, passionate wine collector, one who is especially knowledgeable about Bordeaux. The next time you feature Bordeaux, you should consider asking Super Mario to be your guest. It was interesting that Wayne should mention Tom Barrasso, since Barrasso is also a Bordeaux collector. Perhaps more than fate was involved in Wayne appearing on show #660–maybe the wine gods were providing a subtle reminder of who SHOULD have been the guest…and who was the better hockey player.

  248. April 17, 2009

    ColorOdorSapor

My first reaction when I saw the opening screen was “WTF??!!! Wayne Gretzky???!!!” You rock Gary! You really are changing the wine world.

Man, Gretzky on your show. How awesome is that!! I still can’t get over it.
    I’m gonna watch it again.

I can see it now, Roger Federer tasting Swiss wines… Michael Schuhmacher sipping German Riesling… the possibilities are endless. If anyone can make it happen it’s you Gary.

    Keep on keepin’ ON!!

  249. April 17, 2009

    Uncle Meate

    Another Awesome Show G. Vay.

Great work on the wines and great job with your foundation, WG.

Where can I get an autographed bottle of one of Wayne’s wines. Chard, Cab, Reis, it don’t matter. Although, the ICE WINE would be the sh!t.
My brother played hockey back in the 80s and he is still a HUGE hockey fan. He now has a large collection of sports memorabilia (Namath, Ali, Mantle, Jordan, etc. etc.) I would give him the signed bottle for his collection ’cause Gretzky was and still is one of his all time favorites.

    Rich Ritter in NY

Great show eh? First off, “gobble upper”? I think that’s the first time I’ve ever heard you use that phrase before, LOL. I think that Wayne’s foundation is tremendous for what they do for children. An awesome incentive for people to purchase the wines regardless of how they taste, although you did score them pretty well. I’m in for some bottles of the Napa Cab if Wayne signs them at Wine Library.

Billy Smith was the greatest goal tender ever…being from Long Island, I’m proud to say he was an Islander, although I am a Ranger fan.

That Ice Wine soooo should have had a jersey label (not team specific), but that’s just my opinion…just a natural pairing if you know what I mean.

QOTD: No, not if CC continues on his current path…but I’m probably wrong!

  252. April 17, 2009

    Rich Ritter in NY

Just a thought…those wines are probably going sell pretty fast because everyone is going to think they scored 99 pts. HA!

Have fun on the THUNDER CRUISE!

    E.W.B.

Gary what a pleasant surprise having the great one on. I think his wife Janet should have been on as well. She seems to be the wine connoisseur. But I understand #99. Great idea for his foundation. I will try it for sure.

    Tom From Manchester, UK

Great episode! I could see the smile on your face straight away. Ide love to see you face to face with one of the jets! Would the wine come second over the football?

What is going to happen on episode #666? Its very close!

  255. April 17, 2009

    Rob M

QOTD: Most likely, I figure another world series between two podunk markets like Philly and Tampa would not please Mr. Selig especially in this economy. Hopefully he’ll do a little meddling (akin to how he is stopping everyone from signing Bonds for the league minimum) and get the Yanks in.

  256. April 17, 2009

    JohnS

    Great show GV!
The Great One obviously took putting his name on these wines very seriously and it’s good to see they stacked up. Would have loved to see more of his digs.

QOTD: The Spankees won’t sniffy-sniff the series this year. Go Sox

  257. April 17, 2009

    Chris Nadeau

Sick show Gary. I can’t believe you had “The Great One” on your show. Way to go! Being a huge hockey fan from Canada, it is great to see Wayne on your show. Looking forward to checking out number 99’s wine. I did not know he was into the wine biz. Thanks for enlightening me.

QOTD: Not a big baseball fan, but I will say no to the Yankees winning. I wish the Expos would come back to Montreal :-)

  258. April 17, 2009

    Janet Bell

The Great One was a fantastic guest on your show. Gretsky was so humble and gracious–yet clear on his message. His foundation does so much for youth in hockey, I am going to start looking for his wines!
Your interview was respectful and informative–great job Gary!

  259. April 17, 2009

Us down here in the “podunk” Tampa market enjoy and love baseball as much u “northern” folk! It was great to see what a low salary team could do in baseball last year against the overspending high dollar teams. I don’t think the Yankees have a chance in hell of making it to the WS, they have no pitching! Was great to see them open that $1.2 Billion stadium with a big fat LOSS yesterday.

    Rays in 09!

Great show GV! Great to see a sports guy on the show. Looking forward to trying that Ice Wine and the Cab.

What an honest open guy. My favorite episode to date, and I have been here from the first one. This was the best chemistry I have seen you have with a guest. Nice extra that you like the wine.

OUTSTANDING! Never saw the show before but when I got an e-mail saying Wayne was on this episode I had to watch. Wayne was great and the whole show was a lot of fun!
When will his wines be available at the Wine Library?
Wayne, I’m a lifelong Yankee fan but I’m sorry, the yanks won’t win the series this year. They’ve lost the formula that won their recent championships with GREAT pitching and team chemistry.

Wow!!! The Great One on WLTV….I was so blown away I am giving my first comment ever on WLTV…Didn’t know you where a Ranger fan, Gary!! Glad to hear it..I was in the store last week talking to your guys in the cheese area about hockey and Gretzky. His total career points is the most amazing stat in all of sports…even if he didn’t score one single goal he still is the all-time leader in career points!! Think about that…Lets go Rangers.-Tony

  271. April 17, 2009

    monden

Great show with the great one! Sound quality leaves a little bit to be desired. I know this was not your typical video set-up, but hey, i work in sound so i had to leave a comment on that. But a great show and with the greatest hockey player of all time and his wines being that good (i trust you taste and honesty Gary) Good insight on hockey, wich i love (go Canadians!) I think i’m probably getting all these wines since i’m from Montreal Canada. I will definitely give them a try. Pretty wise move on Wayne’s part to invest into quality winemaking. Unfortunetaly, i think it’s not the same with every celebrity, like Dan Akroyd, for instance, wich i’ve heard that the wines he puts his name on aren’t that great. Never tried them, though.

    Great show again!

  272. April 17, 2009

Forgot to answer Gretzky’s question…even though I am a big Yankee fan I don’t think they will win the World Series..still too many holes and too many aging stars. I hope I am wrong!-Tony

Awesome awesome show GV! Incredible to see the best player ever talk wine and hockey!

Wow, what an amazing show. We all know you are the wine guru but its awesome to see the sports side come out for an episode. I’m sure you have received this request a million times but I would love to see Namath on the thunder show. I’ve been lucky enough to meet him a few times and I think he would make an amazing guest. The Great One is the man and I will be on the lookout for his Napa Cab.

QOTD – Huge Yankee fan but I don’t think its going to happen this year. Too many holes in the pitching staff.

  277. April 17, 2009

Great show GV! So much fun to watch.
QOTD: Yes, but I pick them to win every year.

    Best Show Ever!

Awesome show… glad to see that even though Wayne doesn’t ‘know’ wine, he had the smarts to make sure if his name is on it, it better be good…

Hope to find it here in Cali…

QOTD: Yankees will CHOKE yet again… spending the most $$ doesn’t make a TEAM!

QOTD: Even though I am a Yankee fan and hope they would win, I’m not feelin’ it this year.

Loved the show. Wayne, you’re a real down to earth kinda guy. The wines seem great–not like most of the celeb wines. Gary, make them available to us, even though I wouldn’t mind making the trip out to the Niagara region.

  283. April 17, 2009

    Keith Willis

Usually, when seeing a “high-profile” name on a bottle, I will stay away, but it sounds like Wayne’s integrity is showing with these. I’ll buy these whenever I can find them

  284. April 17, 2009

    pawncop

A great episode and a wonderful guest. It is so refreshing to see a athlete of Mr. Gretzky’s stature reaching out and trying to give back to the community. So often we do not hear of these efforts, I know there are other former and present athletes doing this but for whatever reason the media chooses not to publish these important acts.

Have not heard of the “99″ wines but rest assured I will look and try them when possible.

QOTD – Don’t think so. We are seeing the end result of purchasing talent and not building a team.

  285. April 17, 2009

    Bruin Bum

Great show – looking forward to tracking down the Cab… I’m with Wayne though, sweet wines ain’t my thing.

So if we buy a bottle and send it to Wayne, can we get it autographed?

QOTD… I’m from Boston, need I say more?

Wow – loved the show. As always, Wayne is a class act. My son has Wayne’s autograph on a player card from Wayne’s brief stint in St. Louis – it is his most cherished autograph. Wayne signed it around 11pm at his restaurant in Toronto. After spending a full day in his father’s charity golf tournament AND several hours in his TV studio taping a show… and he still had time to sign autographs for the kids… as I say, a class act!!!

    Hi to Wayne from Newfoundland!

QOTD: No chance the Yankees will win.

QOTD: Yankees World Series, NO. Red Wings Stanley Cup, Yes!

Way to avoid any talk of the Red Wings – namely their sheer dominance come playoff time. BTW, Steve Yzerman is MY “great one” & 19 > 99 all day long!

Great, great show! Thanks Gary for having a legend on the program. Truly one of the best of all time. Enjoyed it!

    Mario Di Fiore

Hi Gary. I’ve been watching for a few months now and love the show especially the ones with the educational aspects. This is the first comment I have left. I couldn’t resist – being a Canadian after all. Great show with the Great One – he is certainly an icon in Canada. You opened my eyes. I’ve resisted buying these types of wines for the same reasons you mentioned on the show – the preconception that these wines are probably more about the name than quality. Thanks for the frankness. I will not shy away from these types of wines anymore but will evaluate them objectively from now on as with any other wines. Love the show. Thanks. Mario

WHO CARES ABOUT THE YANKEES WHEN “THE GREAT ONE” IS IN THE HOUSE! WAYNE GRETZKY IS A CANADIAN TREASURE AND REMINISCENT OF THE OLD TIME PLAYERS WHO CARED MORE ABOUT THE REPUTATION OF THE GAME THAN THEMSELVES! HE GETS IT AND KNOWS THE GAME IS BIGGER THAN HE IS AND BECAUSE HE IS A GREAT PLAYER, HE KNOW HE HAS A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE A TREMENDOUS IMPACT ON THE GAME AND PEOPLE ALL OVER THE WORLD! A GREAT AMBASSADOR FOR HOCKEY AND FOR CANADA!
    WAYNE FOR PRIME MINISTER!
P.S. THE WINE IS GOOD TOO! JUST ANOTHER DEMENTION TO THE MAN, THE MYTH, THE LEGEND!

Never watched the show before, great job! Very informative. Both Gary and Wayne seem like truly honest people, it is refreshing to see.

I still sport the 99 Gretzky jersey at the garden – I can’t believe it has been 10 years Wayne!

Gretzky IS the Great One, but nice to see him spread the love for Steve Nash. Nash is my favorite athlete and a class act as well.

Had to comment before even watching…Wayne was my hockey idol as a kid. I had two autographed sticks from him and I parted with one to a charity and kept the other one. Glad to see you are mixing it up.

    Jonathan

Capitals fan living in France! Loved seeing Gretsky but would love even more to see the Capitals take out the Rangers! Also would love information on a future show about some of the price differences between buying European wines in the States and buying them here in France. I live in Provence and often wonder how much difference there is between the price I would pay here for a good wine and what I would pay in the States (from DC originally). Might be an interesting show if you have enough ‘foreigners’ watching.

Great episode Gary! Was amazed when I saw your tweet that you got “The Great One” on your show… So impressive that he got to know and learn about wine and didn’t just throw his name on the label. Gotta appreciate wines that have proceeds going to charity. Hope to pick up a bottle of the red as soon as i can!!!

Gary, this was the show that got me away from lurking. I loved following Wayne Gretzky and the Oilers growing up in Edmonton. I mean I saw him and Messier around town for crying out loud! He’s just such a class act. The two of you made my new favourite episode. Congrats.

And Wayne, if you’re reading this, thanks for all the good times in Edmonton! They are some fond fond memories.

    QOTD. Blue Jays!!

    QOTD – no.

Pittsburgh represent. As always, the show delivers with passion and ferver, and introduces novel labels that I wouldn’t have heard of otherwise. I like how the licorice theme has been present throughout the week. What really excites me about Gretzky visiting is not only his exceptional fluency in all things wine, but that his presence has the potential to turn an otherwise oblivious demographic on to the wiles of fermented grapes.
    QOTD: no doubt.

  331. April 17, 2009

    gomestar

Great episode!! I still have my NYR Gretzky jersey from way back, I got it for my birthday one year.

I will keep an eye out for these wines, they sound excellent and I can’t wait to try some.

Off the hook, GV!! What a great guest. #99 will always always always be best hockey player who ever skated.

Glad you teased him about Opus and Gaja. Sorta like being fan of Britney and Nina Simone. Room for both styles – just not usually in the same iPOD. You could have had a blind tasting versus Igor Larionov’s Hattrick Reserve Cab.

    QOTD: Yankees?? puhleeeeze

P.S. Us gals out here wouldn’t mind Mike Modano on a future show. =:^)

  334. April 17, 2009

    thunderball

Holy crap, Gary how did you manage to get Gretzky on the show? Awesome. The Oilers dynasty is still fresh in my memory.

I don’t think the Yankees will win the world series cuz Boston is going to crush them, but to be honest I’m really just worried about the Canucks at the moment.

  335. April 17, 2009

    Wow,

The GREAT ONE, and a GREAT Show. Wow. I played hockey all my life, and as a homegrown Islander fan, I can certainly appreciate his greatness. Would love to try that Cab too. Wished you would have showed us a little more of his office. Very cool. -Gary

  340. April 17, 2009

    clembo

I find it funny how differently people are treated by the fans of this show. To be honest, Wayne only knew maybe 1 trivia fact about wine and not much else (really he let Gary do all the wine talk for him) and yet he gets treated with respect, whereas the Collegehumor folks had about the same inexperience with wine and were berated by a lot of WLTV fans. I think the biggest difference is that Gary didn’t really push him to give his opinions on all the wines like he did for the CH people, and Wayne didn’t have to be funny in front of a hostile audience. We all just bow to him because he’s a hockey god.

I’m actually really hesitant on watching all these episodes where he is with the wine owners. It seems like it would be extremely hard to be harsh on the wine with them right there. Has Gary ever commented on that? I mean I know Gary is a great guy and all, but when the biggest hockey legend of all time is telling you that you’re a cool guy, it’d be pretty hard to call his wine “just average”.

Anyways I like the episode despite all that, and it seems like you had a lot of fun making this episode. Here’s to more episodes with people who aren’t wine experts (I usually find them to be the most fun).

  341. April 17, 2009

    winejukie

OMG Wayne Gretzky ON THIS SHOW I CAN’T BELIVE IT. I tried his Napa Valley Cab at one of the wine show in St Catherines over the summer and it was great.

The Great One and a GREAT episode. Even though you beat my Bruins in the finals I’ll forgive you if they can win the Cup this year. Really want to try the Cab and Icewine-Shiraz. Hope one of my distributors here in Mass can get it.

QOTD…Hell no the Yankess won’t win the world series. Its gonna be someone obscure like the Royals or Marlins again.

  343. April 18, 2009

Gary, wow, the GREAT ONE is on your show!! Man that was awesome…Great wine Wayne, I’ve tried the Cab and it’s great. Gary, that’s the first time you do not spit the wine when you taste on the show.
No the Yankee won’t win the series. Cheers

This was awesome!!! I’ll always love Wayne for what he did for the KINGS!!! He could have used some of that extra girth when he was playing though. Maybe he wouldn’t have been checked off the puck as much.

    ColorOdorSapor

In reaction to the “…Gretzky doesn’t know wine…” comments: people, I’d have a lot more worries if someone actually called themselves a winemaker and had no idea. This is a living legend and definitely one of the best, if not, best ever hockey player which has ever lived!! It’s not like he’s pretending to be something he isn’t.

At least he was honest from the get-go about not really knowing much about wine and told the story about how this all came about. The fact that part of the sales go to a great cause should be admired.

Nice project there Wayne. Some good wines, good people, for a great cause, you can’t ask for anything more than that.

I hope you left Mrs. Gretsky a few Napa reds that are far superior to Opus One. There are lots out there that beat Opus large.

Fun show. I am not a big hockey fan, but I am a Wayne Gretzky fan. An amazing athlete and seems like a nice guy too. QOTD – I hope the Yankees do not win the World Series.

Having Wayne Gretzky on the show gives the show an element that pushes it to a new level. I have been an Islander fan since their inception and watched Billy Smith play his whole career and can really appreciate Waynes view. No matter what team a person watches, they are still a Gretzky fan.

  359. April 18, 2009

I’ve been trying Wayne’s wines for a while now, and I can’t tell you how happy I am they don’t suck – I was so worried it was just going to be a name-play, but nope, they’re good! Tried the cab a month or so ago, and I agree with Gary – it was quite good, I’m also very happy that it appears he has a stake in Willow Heights – an Ontario winery that, up until Wayne & Co. took it over, wasn’t making very good stuff – post Wayne, their reds became serious – their “Trissette” a bordeaux style blend just kills, which shocked the hell out of me – but then again, I’m a Cabernet Franc fan, so anything with that in it – done well – makes me happy.

Congratulations Wayne for lending your name to quality Ontario wines! ( ok, ok, and California ;)
Congratulations Gary, great to have you and Wayne together.

Ok now you’re officially a Triple-YYY-list celebrity; no Triple-ZZZ-list can have the Great One as a guest.

Not to steal thunder but Igor Larinov (former NHL and beloved Red Wing aka “The Professor”) is also in the wine business and makes some serious wines; the hockey guys love grapes.

No the Yanks will not win the world series, sorry. Wayne I’d love an autographed bottle, just got one signed by Ted Lindsay for the “great hockey player” wines someone put out there.

It was AWESOME to see 2 guys at the TOP of their games talking about things they are so passionate about. I’m from the OKANAGAN, so I already know how GREAT CANADIAN WINES are… it was REALLY good to see how well Wayne’s Wine Collection did with Gary.

Thanks again for a REALLY entertaining & enjoyable interview – YOU GUYS BOTH ROCK!! :D

I don’t slap a lame pizza picture on a bottle and try to make a buck.; I Will never buy his wine Pizza boy. Or Hockey man. Sure.. I don’t anything about you. Tough one… Gretz was always a (Winnipeg) Jets killer… have tried the unoaked Chard and the Meritage. As a thirtysomething Canadian boy whose team (Winnipeg Jets, obviously) was consistently smacked down by Gretz and the Oilers, it’s tough – especially now that he’s coaching the team that left Winnipeg for Phoenix.

No, the wines are good, and at least Wayne’s honest about his knowledge of wine. Now, are we gonna get a/our team back here or what?

all you guys posting about wayne being a poser are just being ridiculous. did you watch the show?

    -his grandfather made wine.

-his good friend (gary loves projects with friends) is a wine maker
who recruited wayne, not the other way around.

-he admits straight up to not being an “expert”, but rather a regular drinker.

-he’s helping to promote a lesser known wine region.

-and best of all, hes doing it to help support his charitable foundation.

Many of you vayniacs are too eager to call people sellouts or inauthentic.

maybe you should take a look at yourselves, and realize, your not getting the

vaynerchuk message of acceptance, colaboration and friendship. Very

disapointing, vayniacs. Perhaps, you would enjoy Sir Gary more than GV.

P.S. It’s the friggin Great One.

All the naysayers in the comments don’t know what they’re talking “aboot.” He was totally down to Earth and his heart is in the right place. Belonging on a team makes a huge difference in a child/youth’s development – I believe in the cause 100%.

Long time observer (and buyer), first time to comment. Gary, you are on a roll. The last month has been stellar with 3 or 4 of my favorite shows. Wayne is an Icon and it was an honor to see the human side of him. You let him by with the Opus comment but covered it with respect and a degree of class above your already respectable record (which leads to why I am finally commenting). Keep it true.

Plus, I loved it on that old training video you did where you said “Hey coach, where’s the steak?” when the coach is talking about the game day meal.

Wow! This is my favorite guest so far. Who knew that The Great One was a wino?! This is awesome! I am originally from Buffalo, and as a 6 1/2 year old I saw him overcome a hat trick by Gilbert Perreault and break Esposito’s record for most goals in one season. It was a great night of hockey nearing the decline and rise of two of the great players.

I was in Toronto last week and I tasted the #99 merlot and chardonay. Not bad, not bad at all. especially in canada where “ok” wines start at 18-20$. its a good play. On a side note I also tasted a white blend from creek side winery (waynes partner…) and I really liked it. 40 sauvignon blanc, 40% riesling and 20% pinot gris (or something liek that). Don’t know what the retail is but it would be worth checking out.

I couldn’t believe it, a hockey play from Gary V and a wine play from the Great One! Outta control! If there’s a signed bottle involved, I’ll totally take some of that cab, right now. Sign me up!

Great show, loved his reactions to your tasting notes. When you were talking about BMX bike burned rubber, he was like “sure, its good”. Awesome! Keep up the great work.

No way Gretzky, that Halos are going to beat down the Yanks. And how about my Chicago Blackhawks, Stanley Cup Champs in 2010!

Is it just my imagination or was Wayne a little toasted already? Seemed like he hit the bottle early on this one.

Anyway, will the Yankees win the World Series? God, I hope not. At this point, it’s a tough hill to climb for the Angels (game 5 tonight), but I’m pulling for my Halos.

What a great interview with the Great One, he doesn’t seem to know his wine as well as Gary does. What a down to Earth guy, it is great to see that he is doing that whole wine business for his foundation as well. Hockey talk is always a bonus!

Well The Yanks DID win now didn’t they! And I tend to think the Great one WAS a bit toasted here.
