GV, too funny seeing you on the NFL Draft promos on ESPN…there’s this split second scene where your head is filling up my entire TV…freaking hilarious.

Next time you do a show in front of a large number of people, talk extra QUIET! We’ll be able to hear you with your mic, and maybe it will force them to shut the h#*l up!

    QOTD — blue!

I just had wine #2 the other day — ‘meh’ and an 85 score!

QOTD – Gas lamp district plus dinner and jazz at Croce’s.

    Thanks Gary

That was one of the most difficult episodes of WLTV to watch – it must have been a tough gig being in a room full of drunken punters

QOTD: didn’t have that brand in Australia, but I always liked red

    Cheers
    Andrew

    Otter Pops!? WTF?

There is only so much of the live crowd I can take.

Can’t wait to have you back in the saddle.

Glad you guys are havin’ fun though!

    Sweet!

Homey!!!! You’re the hardest working man in the wine biz!!!!!

You need to get mic’d up on your next public taping.

    Safe trip back !

QOTD: no idea. Don’t know what Otter Pops are.

Watching this (and the white wine) episode was like listening to nail scratched on a black board.

Don’t get me wrong. The content was fine.

However, it so poorly lit that the video quality was in the toilet.

The crowd was obnoxious (and probably already drunk). No spitting beforehand there.

There were more “Shhhhhhh’s” than a steam laundry. I feel for you Gary. I think you must have been frustrated with the crowd’s lack of attention.

I know you really like the spontaneity and honesty of unedited episodes but you may want to reconsider.

As always, you were not afraid to call a spade a spade in your opinions of the wines.

  15. April 22, 2009

    Scruff

Gary needs some crowd enforcers and a megaphone ;-)

    QOTD: lime….

ya to much background noise. you think people would respect the taping more then they did. but no matter how bad it is i always love the show. you got me into wine

    Bill the Wrist Watch Freak

Yap, yap, yap. Did you have a voice left at the end of this night?

    Dominus

Gotta give it to you. That had to be as painful to get through as it was to watch but we give you a high five for the effort. What a bunch of dolts.

QOTD: Qtter Pops? Dunno but my favorite Fla-Vor-Ice was grape (purple).

    Cheers!

  19. April 22, 2009

    I miss mott!!!

    Good enthusiasm.

    QOTD: blue

Again, a little noisy, but it did sound like lots of folks were having a good time.

QOTD – Never had an Otter Pop so will stay with Ice Pops, Grape.

  21. April 22, 2009

    sharon

Otter Pops? Search me. I do like the coconut Popsicles, though.

  22. April 22, 2009

    Jacob L.

I actually liked the crowd and interaction. If I ever had the luck of GV coming to Ohio, I’d definitely want to interact with him during a tasting. These last two episodes just brought something new to the table. I’m not saying that I’d want every WLTV done in front of a live, shwasted audience, but for two episodes, I think its hilarious.

QOTD: I think my favorite flavor was orange, but I loved purple and blue coloring my mouth.

  23. April 22, 2009

    Chris

QOTD – Blue Otter Pops, aka “Louie Blue Raspberry”

Au Bon Climate makes some much better Pinots than their standard Santa Barbara… more $$, of course, but exponentially better.

  24. April 22, 2009

    Palmer

QOTD: I like the blue raspberry flavor.

on the Novy – it wasn’t great, but I think comparing it to $10 Aussie shiraz is a little unfair, because it wasn’t out of control hot alcohol like many of those are, it was more balanced.

  25. April 22, 2009

    Gretchen

    i want to be there!!!!

qotd: my favorite ICE-POP flavor is orange

  26. April 22, 2009

    Steak Monster

Wow, if you ever wanted to form your own angry mob…

As a kid I always ate freeze pops, red and orange
(why do they even make green?)

  27. April 22, 2009

    bluna

okay so I haven’t written in awhile and have been watching the show religiously
it’s preparation for something that I don’t fully understand yet.

Personally I love the variety and spontaneous combustion of GV though I am not sure I felt the 100% crush that I usually feel.

Every day a new day and I am happy to end my day with WLTV. Mucho grats for your hard work and honesty.

QOTD: rootbeer popsicles period end of story

  28. April 22, 2009

    JD_Jonny

Man, Gary…I can’t believe you’d hate on the Ampelos wine so hard…67 points really??
I guess you like their Pinots more.

  31. April 22, 2009

    Tenacious E

Tom Brady was a pretty good sub, yeah?

Actually, what you need to do is do an episode next February when you’re back in South Sioux. That is what you need to do. Well, you don’t NEED to exactly, but it would be fun.

QOD: Green (although all we had was Fla-Vor-Ice, which all tasted pretty much the same).

  32. April 22, 2009

    Couves

Ha, ok, note to self: next time do show _before_ cocktail hour.

The crowd’s reaction was hilarious, but the white noise was a bit too much to take.

If wine commentary could be distilled to something with a booming base, I think that crowd would dig it!

Second my thoughts from yesterday… noise too high in the back might not be as annoying as it’s need to be shushed…
QOTD: it’s the only think i like in this artificial flavor…
…grape (Melt it down you got that purple Drank yo!)

  37. April 22, 2009

    David

QOTD: I usually ate the lime and gave the rest to the neighbor kid that my brother and I hated. The orange was pretty good, grape tasted like cough medicine.

To everyone posting here…I was in the audience. I was standing right behind Matt and the rest of the crew for both episodes. They did an excellent job of making sure everyone there got a pour of everything. A true accomplishment, in my book, considering the number of people there.

I can verify that most of the crowd (at least everyone that I could see, which was almost everyone) was totally into the show, totally into the wine, and a lot of the background chatter you hear in the video was comprised of folks enjoying the wines, exchanging comments, and of course trying to engage Gary with their thoughts. I think that’s exactly what Gary wanted, and what Gary stands for. Of course, there were a few folks who had a few too many; there were a few “club chick”, gold-digger cougar types who rolled in to the event in packs and bought tickets at the door because it looked like a classy wine event where they could meet their next meal. But for the most part, it wasn’t a bunch of smash-drunk, babbling idiots with no idea what was going on as is being portrayed by some of the folks here. I understand that you love Gary and you love your Wine Library TV, just as I do. But cut everyone some slack.

There was a younger married couple standing next to me who were both holding their wine, disposable cameras, and copies of Gary’s book. They were intently listening to what Gary had to say, exchanging their own opinions, and they must have said “wow, this is so cool” 50 or 60 times. There were folks in the audience who were hitting the flavor profiles on the button; there were others who were trying to figure out exactly what the hell Gary meant by “This wine tastes like Razzles”. Most of the people that were annoying me were on the outer edge to Gary’s left, and they had wandered into the hotel bar that had gone into full swing and weren’t even part of the event (they didn’t have wristbands or wine glasses anyway). I didn’t see anyone stumbling drunk and quite a few people ended up going to dinner afterwards at the same restaurant we did. Unless they sobered up on the five minute walk down Front Street, I don’t think they were wasted.

I enjoyed the show, I enjoyed the crowd interaction, and I fed off of Gary’s energy. I do agree that this isn’t the best format for rebroadcasting on the Web, but I also think that if Gary launched a national tour doing this kind of show, he’d sell them all out.

If this format keeps the wine snobs away, I’m all for it. If you’ve got $99, you can join Parker’s site and get all the bottles of BORING that you can drink.

    Rock on, Gary.

  38. April 22, 2009

    Wes

It’s Fla-Vor-Ice! And I like red. It’s too bad that the wines were lacking. The Merlot blend sounds interesting. The live audience makes it fun. Thanks.

  39. April 22, 2009

    tuscanbob

    Stay classy San Diego.

  40. April 22, 2009

    J Crazy

I don’t likes sweets that much but among the sweets my least favorites are chocolate and Ice Pops. Among all the flavors of Ice Pops my least favorite is Grape followed closely by orange and red (it really didn’t taste like cherry). I get angry when I see grape juice, grape candy, grape gum…Once at the dentist’s (I was about 10) they gave me grape flavored floride and I spit it out all over myself.

  41. April 22, 2009

    rossdrum

I love Wine Library TV but the background noise …man. This episode was a challenge. I actually turned it off about five minutes in. Can’t do it. See you next time, Gary.

  42. April 22, 2009

    David T (@ONUMello)

You asked about locations to hit up- Columbus Ohio! But seriously, wherever you go next, PLEASE have a “no talking unless asked a question” policy. The constant “shhh”ing was VERY VERY VERY annoying. People need to be more respectful. They were there for you & to be guests at the taping. Would they have done that if they were at WL in Jersey? The interaction with you was fine, but they couldn’t have been focusing on you when they chit chat the whole time.

    QOTD: Orange

  43. April 22, 2009

    John Rogers

Ssssssh. Either too small a room .too many people or too much wine drinking
whatever the case hard to hear you over the din.

QOTD ; never heard of it.

Ha ha, that kills me…. “let’s get him”… ah man

  48. April 23, 2009

sorry gary, i just cant finish this episode, the background noise is just too annoying…seems like a fun show tho

  49. April 23, 2009

Fruit bombs but no Oak Monster?
What flavor was YELLOW. The grape was a sugar rush for sure.

  50. April 23, 2009

    Brian Smith

Fla-Vor-Ice where I grew up. Although certain little league parks had Otter Pops. It’s all about the original Fla-vor-ice green, orange, and purple.
Gary have you ever had a rootbeer float with chocolate icecream?
Float in one hand, orange icy in the other = summertime back in the day.

  51. April 23, 2009

    Don

Ugh, that was tough to listen to with everyone talking in the background… Second day in a row it was a struggle to get through the show, which is a shame because there has been so much momentum recently! I’m sure you’ll follow this one up with some serious Thunder, you always do!!! Keep you the great work.

QOTD: #1-Pink, #2-Grape, #3-Orange. Agreed that Red is poop. Tastes like Robitussin, which is clearly not as delicious as DIMETAPP.

  52. April 23, 2009

    Robert Howells

    Root beer freezer pop

  53. April 23, 2009

    jwink

I enjoyed the episode yesterday more, crowd not as persistently talking, and 50 mintues of the same thing (slowly getting more drunk throng ended up being a bit much). That’s just my $.02.

Don’t drop these, keep them going and experimenting….anyone got a “shhhhhhhh” count between the two shows? I’ll put the over under at 85.

    QOTD: blue razzzzzzzz

  54. April 23, 2009

    apj_bobswineguy

Felt like Saturday staff tastings at Bob’s!
I use to get so frustrated w/ the girls, but then I realized they were enjoying the moment & now I just talk & let them interrupt or talk between themselves – whatever – it’s all about the wine, not totally what I’m saying. I do still feel like I’m on a stopwatch though. Ten minutes. After that it disintegrates very quickly.
Pretty good show. I agree w/ the Novy rating—BUT—Adam Lee does makes some killer Syrahs. The general Napa appellation just isn’t his best effort. Try Susan’s Hill.

  55. April 23, 2009

    big lou and little T

    Hey GV,
we were so happy you came by and threw back some vino with us. I was also glad to see your enthusiasm and good nature in full force. thanks for sharing some Thunder in sunny SD!
BTW, I would really like to see you do a tasting on some wines from Mexico, I want to get your take on LA Cetto Don Luis Terra and other good showing stuff.

  56. April 23, 2009

    Christopher Scoggin

You where easier to hear this time but so where they. At least this time they where interacting with you some of the time instead of all being involved in their own side conversations.

    QOTD: Blue without a doubt.

  57. April 23, 2009

    Megan

QOTD: Blue raspberry, of course (this is for all the Left Coast peeps who know & love Otter Pops)

Man, I wish you had done a live tasting at the Wine Bloggers Conference this past fall — you would have had our rapt attention (which you had for your talk, anyway). They were a bit rude, but you needed a dedicated microphone; would have helped cut out a lot of the background noise…

  58. April 23, 2009

    Razzles!

    Density!

    Freeze pops became otter pops.

    I like the blue ones.

I didn’t even finish this episode. You were killing it, but, it seemed, they could care less. 75+ points

Gary! I would LOVE for you to come to my hometown of Mobile, Alabama – but I’m not sure the Deep South could handle your THUNDER :) You wanna prove us wrong?

  61. April 23, 2009

    Erik E. Rogers

Good episode, I admit that I also found the noise hard to sit through but I think blaming the audience is a little harsh. A microphone would have made a big difference, no doubt.

QOTD: I grew up on Mr. Freeze brand. White and Peach were the best.

  62. April 23, 2009

    Greg B

Big G, No, No, No on two things the Video #1. Please really? It was freaking not even watchable. #2 just like In & Out Burgers out west will always blow away White Castle. Otter Pops are way better than Ice Pops or whatever you did get in The Dirty. LOL!!!!!!

    QOTD:Red of course

  63. April 23, 2009

    Zino

You just need a clip-on mic. to solve the sound problem.

  64. April 23, 2009

    IASHERMAN

QOTD: I think it is blue.. The sell Otter pops at Costco. I had never heard of them until I moved to California. I never saw them on the East Coast.

  65. April 23, 2009

    onekailuaboy

?????? Where was this taped? SDSU? At a Frat. Party? This was like College Humor gone wild. One of Wine Lib. video low-points, SSSSSSSSSSShhhhh!
QOTD: Liked Otter Pops 20+ yrs. ago, now I prefer real wine. Gives a better buzz.

  66. April 23, 2009

The shush monster was there! Just can’t listen to the whole episode due to the crowd noise. Sorry, man.

    My head hurts after that.

  68. April 23, 2009

I agree with lots of others— can’t finish the video. A personal clip-on mic is the answer to this type of situation. Again you mention the root beer, so my QOTD to you gary——- when is the high grade root beer show? If you love it, DO IT!!! (please)

  69. April 23, 2009

    dcrob

millions and millions of voices in my head.. does that make me crazy? No cause i just watched this episode. though i am interested in that janasse

    QTOD: purple or red.

  70. April 23, 2009

Eh, at least the audience was participating in this one rather than white noise….
    QOTD: Blue & Green

    QOTD: Red. Is that strawberry?

  72. April 23, 2009

    Que Syrah, Syrah ……

Less white wine noise? …… now I gotta drink this headache away.

You have patience my friend … you were like teaching a second grade class of rowdy kids hopped up on ritalin and juice boxes !!! SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

    QOTD – CHERRY.

    P.S.: SHUSH.

  73. April 23, 2009

    jigger

QOTD: No clue on actual name of flavor but definitely the blue ones.

I hope you didn’t use up your entire bag of shhhhhh trying to get the SD children to quiet down. You’re going to need some for raising your own child at home soon enough.

SIDE NOTE: Is it possible to raise your hand in SD without yelling? I find it hard to believe many in the audience could last two rounds deep in a simple game of “simon says”.

There, my rant is over. Peace.

  74. April 23, 2009

    Phil G

    oh boy… drunk people…

    QOTD – orange!

  75. April 23, 2009

    ex-lurkdawg

Once again it seemed like the crowd was a group of drunken college kids. You were great. It must have taken some self control to not yell at the idiots who kept yelling “otter pops”. Thanks.

qotd: I also know it as flavor ice and I liked the orange.

  76. April 23, 2009

    Jayhitek

    I like AuBon Climat
Tough room noise again. Sounds like GV is going to lose his voice from yelling.
QOTD: What the hell is an OtterPop? In Boston we call it an Italian Ice. I think when I was in Phili a few years ago, they called it WaterIce.
    I think lemon or watermellon.

  77. April 23, 2009

    italianwinelover

Boy that was difficult to hear you with the crowd – what a shame they couldn’t stay quiet to listen to you for just 25 minutes! Rough crowd but good info as always! Want to seek out the Domaine de la Janasse for sure! Mahalo for trying to bring the Thunder!

QOTD: They are freeze pops and I love the blue razzzzberry!! YUMMY!

  78. April 23, 2009

    Askold Shegedyn

    Shhhhhhhh! Out of control….

  79. April 23, 2009

    MaryS

Please don’t do another episode like this without a dedicated mic…boy oh boy, it was painful to get through but wanted to hear your opinions on the vino. Thankssssssssshhhhhh.

  80. April 23, 2009

    Austin

My suggestions for shhhing. First, get some lighting, it will make the crowd feel like they are at a live taping and they can’t be talking. Second, mic up.

  81. April 23, 2009

    Grant

A little extra “ambient noise” is no problem. It adds to the energy of a “live” event (which is what I’m guessing is your intention). A little too much of the “If it’s not what we have in NY/NJ then it must suck” mentality, though.

  82. April 23, 2009

    Kevin K

Sounds like there are a lot of rude drunk people in San Diego.

  83. April 23, 2009

    WineWoman

Wow, SHSHSHSHSHSHSHSHSSSHSHSHSHSH, now that’s better. Peace and quiet. We can all think clearly now. At least the crowd had fun.

QOTD: They used to have a white one that tasted like vanilla. That would make it Vanilla Ice, but that was a long time ago—so just like the rapper??, it was a one-hit wonder and no longer available. Too bad, cause the ice-pop was awesome. Also liked the blue-sky one—some type of berry flavor which made your lips turn blue.

QOTD 2: Have never heard of or had an otter pop. East Coast, baby.

  84. April 23, 2009

    Bugsey34

Tough crowd, but I agree that a dedicated mike would have solved the problem of background noise. You could hear the camera guy great when he spoke a few words, because the mic was near him, not Gary. So for David’s comment – I don’t think the commenters dislike the format or want a “boring” show, just a mic so we can hear Gary well.

QOTD: Never ate them when I was little!

  85. April 23, 2009

    Richie

    Tough on the sound again.
QOTD: I think it was Raspberry but im not sure.

  86. April 23, 2009

    Kevin K

QOTD: Either Sir Isaac Lime or Louie-Bloo Raspberry.

  87. April 23, 2009

    TripleB

Too bad the crowd couldnt modulate their volume – they missed a good education experience. Felt like i was back at a grade school assembly.

  88. April 23, 2009

    Snarf

That episode was brutal to pay attention to with all of the crowd noise. How lit up were the people in the audience? Maybe it was just a microphone placement problem.

  89. April 23, 2009

    Icecoldimages

I love the show and have learned alot as a new winer drinker but the last two live episodes were really pretty challenging to watch – video quality is terrible, sound quality is poor and the constant crowd babble really makes it tough to watch. The “live show” concept is not a bad one but clearly needs to be planned properly for deliver the same quality we’re used to.

  90. April 23, 2009

    guymandude

Crazy again, but WLTV none the less.
    QOTD;Rootbeer

  91. April 23, 2009

    Jeff "SoCalinMotion" Crace

Let me remind everyone that this was a “Live” event….and yes there was happy hour from 4-7 before the show. Great show………

  92. April 23, 2009

    JasonHindson

Video quality was poor to say the least. I think you did a better video from a plane, versus these two San Diego shows. The crowd was pretty annoying, it would have been nice to drop a few less shhhh’s. I think the live format is pretty cool overall though, and with a few tweaks it could be a good format for you.

You need to travel with someone who is willing to put a beat down on loud audiences. You should bring Mott and Matt. Mott could be like an enforcer at a hockey game. He could pull some charger jerseys over their heads and go at it like Link Gaetz.

Man I was soooo looking forward to the San Diego episodes since I live right up the road, but couldn’t make it down for the tastings but these were absolutely UNWATCHABLE. Horrible video quality.

@Jayhitek OtterPops are NOT the same as Italian Ice. Otterpops are simply flavored juice (orange, cherry, blue raspberry, grape, etc) you buy in bulk at places like Costco that you throw in the freezer. Italian Ice (like you get from Ralph’s or Rita’s back east) is similar but different flavorings are mixed together with water & sugar (and sometimes cream for the cream ices) in a batch freezer and then deep frozen in a sub-freezer. They’re then scooped out like ice cream when served. Same dessert genre, but different.

Liked the concept for this (and the last episode on the whites). A live audience could be fun, and has worked in the past. But, the acoustics and lighting in that room made things difficult to get through. Should’ve brought Mott to work his magic.

Good show, very informative, but why on earth did you have the mic on at the camera. Next time, just your mic!

I grew up in NJ too, be it South Jersey which is a whole different state, but I called them Ice Pops too. I had a cardboard box in the freezer with 100 of them, I always went for the ORANGE!

Ha – drunk people at wine tastings. They were pretty annoying to listen to. It would have been waay better to have the volume down on the crowd. I still want to hear them . .but not all thier individual (sometimes assinine) comments.

Perhaps some experimentation with different mikes or something?

Gary, after these past two Live episodes I hope you never do another. These two episodes were quite possibly the worst episodes you have ever done. The yelling and having to ask the crowd to ssshhhhh every few seconds took so much away from the show I have no idea what you drank or scored. I hated them so much I can’t put it into words. Who cares if they are “otter” pops or “icy” pops we all know what you are talking about, does it mater?

Gary please don’t do anymore live shows.

I have to agree with the majority–terrible two shows. The crowd was obnoxious (but that’s what you get for pandering to the classless masses–those asses)and the audio/video setup was all wrong. 70 points, and I’m being nice.

I know you have other responsibilities; but given the fact that thousands of people worldwide watch your show, and that you weren’t even close to getting an American Wine Blog Award, perhaps you should up your game a bit? I predict you won’t make it to 1000. Let’s move on….

  122. April 24, 2009

    Sonia

Have to agree with pretty much everybody that the crowd was totally annoying and rude… I know I’ve watched some other episodes that were taped before a live audience and I’m pretty sure this problem hasn’t come up before. What’s up with those San Diego people???? But you always come through Gary! You made a reference that was great because of where you were.

    Damn, G!….

That f’n suuuuuccckked. If I thought that during the white wine ep. you were hammin’ it up, and playin’(down) to the crowd, by this time, they dragged you down, and OWNED you. And as they say on the street, That ain’t right, man.

A roster of wines that merit more respect than was evident. Jim Clendenen (Au Bon Climat) never takes a shortcut, or compromised the integrity of his naturally made, highly crafted wines for the sake of artificial sweetness, fake boobs, or any of that sh*te. His Ici/La-Bas wines are sublime. Thank God you didn’t murder the nuances of his better efforts, but only his entry level wine on this pack of alcoholic pigs.

Ampelos too, is maybe owed an apology here. When Peter and Rebecca appeared on the show, months back, they made it clear that they were totally hands on, and using the best talent available in sources, vineyard management, etc.
Thought the style is more to the popular American, or New-World fruit bomb, this rowdy public forum egged you on straight past any introspection of the wine in exchange for quippy comments designed to make them laugh. Bad Gary.
    Go stand in the corner.

I hope you learn from the nation’s displeasure on these two eps., and I hope that the Thunder cruise is a blast and a huge success!

Bro… I know you always yell about people making a big deal about what kind of camera you use and equipment and shit and you always yell and say “it doesn’t fucking matter”, but at some point it does.

This was not even watchable! At some point it does matter, especially when you’re at the level you’re now at. Some level of professionalism is expected. I love watching ya, but you need to step your game up. There’s a reason people watch tv shows & movies in HD on their TV’s and not on in low resolution on YouTube. Although I’ll admit you now can get awesome HD video online so no reason to fight it. Use it!

I watch a ton of online video like Hulu etc… I still expect the video to be watchable. It’s amazing what a nice HD camera, some proper lighting and a cheap wireless mic system will do for you.

Your personality and charisma usually make up for it, but not this time. Hope it gets better.

Having just been at a live taping with 200+ people it is difficult when someone else is filming to get the sound right. Don’t worry about the technique. He had some good things to say about the wines and that’s what counts. Never had an Otter pop in my life. I never liked Ice pops because they always tasted too watered down.

FIRST OFF- This was a great episode because it had (like the previous episode) immediate present feedback… even if it was a bit rowdy. The wine tasting fest atmosphere is a lot of fun, and GARY should absolutely continue to tape episodes at such events if he can regardless of how well viewers at home can hear. FUN EPISODE!

QOTD: Otter Pops?! PLEASE! Weird west coasters- they were called FLAVOR ICE and my favorite was probably either green or orange.

Whew! Another slightly rough show, with the boisterous crowd and all. Man, the Vayniacs are really ripping you for this, and I just don’t see why. So it didn’t work; okay, so next time GV will tone the crowd down or he won’t tape these types of episodes anymore. No biggie! Not all experimentation goes well! It’s all part of the learning process!
