I’m curious to watch how Cahors does with Argentina. The Argentina Malbecs are the hottest sell in our shop right now. We can’t keep them in stock.

    76 is a complicated number…

QOTD: Nothing really, other than I’d have a slightly larger paycheck due to no 401K contribution.

Awesome episode, I loved the rapport between you two and the drama from the wasp. You’ve got me intrigued by malbec as well, and I’m planning on getting some tomorrow, I’ll tell you what I think.

QOTD: Without that “goal” of retirement, I think you’d see people going less towards jobs that fulfill with money, and instead work in jobs that are fulfilling to their lives. That being said, I don’t think that retirement is the goal that everyone believes it is. So many people seem to shrink once they’ve lost the purpose of their career, and instead of living, they just exist, which is really sad to see.

Malbecs are hit or miss with me. Sometimes they just seem too soft for my palate.
QOTD I would find a job that I am passionate about rather than finding a job that just satisfies my wallet.

QOTD – At 22 years young, I don’t plan on retiring anyway. Although I do think there is some point where you have to take it a little slower. I think my overall priorities would be taking the money I would be saving for retirement and using it for my future kids’ and grandkids’ education…and more vino so I can expand my palette. That may be a cookie-cutter answer, but it’s what I believe.

Thought the episode was honest and entertaining…everything I look for in WLTV.

QOTD: My answer is the obvious . . . and sad one . . . I would look up from my desk, take stock in the good around me, and enjoy each day for what it is, a gift.

Great episode, great guest. Love the grass fed and Malbec. Wish I could duplicate the slow fire, long cook, process at home. Oh well, another excuse to visit Argentina.

GV – as a Browns fan, I went through the same emotions as you but in reverse. First, elation. Thinking as you did the Browns got over on your Jets big time. Then, they announced what the Jets gave . . . ridiculous . . . either Mangini believes something about these players now that he didn’t while in NY or he flat out got Jedi mind tricked. Painful. Peace.

I just celebrated my 67th birthday.
After 31 years in banking, I quit, and started a painting business about 14 years ago. I’m still going strong. Love to work, but find it more important to enjoy my sons and grand-children.
    Also love the malbec wines.
Had the opportunity to visit B.A. two years ago, and instantly took to it. The people are friendly, (yes…..even to Americans), the food was quite good, and the wines, outstanding. About half of our wine consumption is Malbec and Torrontes. Give the price point, it should be everybody’s.
Nice show Gary, and cheers to Tim.

    Good guest, good information. Thanks!

QOTD: I’ve always presumed that I wouldn’t be likely to retire from nursing until I can’t walk anymore, or no-one will hire me, whichever comes first. This is partly for financial reasons and partly because it’s a big part of who I am and what I do. Besides, I’ve always worked my other passions into and around my ‘working’ life, so retire from what, really?

Me, at about 1:45 Saturday: “What the hell? I think that was Gary Vaynerchuk…”

Yo…..now you know I’m retired brother. I think the reason I am retired is because A: I am tired of doing what I did for so many years, and B: I can be.

But you are right. BORING !!! I really wish I could do something with wine and then someday I will not be bored anymore…. but I don’t know what to do. Can you help me Homey? Do you know any god winery’s I can buy? AMybe you want to buy one with me??

Also, I don’t know how to answer the question. I think I’m jaded by being retired so long. I need to get back in the game.

    Any suggestions???

I must admit, the first comment was really just to see where I ranked because I have never been in top 10 before, and it was really exciting! So now that I’ve actually watched the episode, I feel compelled to make some comments.

Amen to Tim on the whole grass fed beef thing, how serendipitous that I see it on my favorite internet wine show. I want to start a small scale Texas free range grass fed beef operation. So Tim, if you want to do some angel investing, I surely wouldn’t mind :)

QOTD: I love it! I can’t really articulate what I want to say about this topic without writing a full on novel, so I will condense it into some cliches that I live by…every day is a gift, so work hard and play hard, enjoy it to the fullest, be thankful for what you have, not resentful of what you don’t have, and count your blessings.

I’ve rolled the dice on $10-$15 malbecs several times and found that I’d bought swill. I heard that some of the new Argentine Malbec producers are bad, I don’t know. Anyway, Argentine malbecs are supposed to be for Merlot and Shiraz drinkers looking for adventure on a budget, so let’s hope that’s not the case.

Nice show on a wonderful varietal which I am drinking more and more these days. A nice recommendation: Alamos Seleccione, not bad but the “C” may be coming to me real soon. 4 hour work week, please. It takes me that long to commute.

QOTD: Looking forward to retirement. Old school, I’ve worked too long and can find many things, i.e. wine, tennis, travel, cooking, piano, languages, did I say wine to keep me busy during the day. I will also read, build a website, get into another business that does not require me to make big bucks but to do what I enjoy. Life is too short, live every day to the fullest is nice but who really does that? No one unless you’re retired.

    Cheers!

P.S. Stick with the depressed “no” on your face when they drafted Sanchez. How many 1st round QBs in the last 10 yrs are starting in the NFL today? Two? Maybe and we all know who they are. This year’s MVP and the SB champion.

GV: Tim could be the greatest writer since Hemingway, I don’t know (never read his book), but he doesn’t appear to know squat about wine, other than he loves Malbec. So this episode didn’t really do anything for me, but I think that about most of your shows with guests. And it seems like more and more of your shows are featuring guests. Personally, I don’t like that development, but I assume either you do, your other viewers do, or both.

Gotta say Sanchez was a steal for what the Jets packaged to get him. I think it is obvious the Jets mean business with the aggressiveness they have shown the last two off seasons. They may even give my beloved Steelers a run this year.

Tim Ferriss pulls me out of lurker-hood to post a comment. Tim, I watched a talk you gave at some conference (about learning languages and learning how to swim?) and had to say, “hey I’ve seen that guy before!” Loved the chemistry between Gary and Tim, great show guys.

GARY! First time commenter, long time watcher (that sounds creepy, but okay).

Loved the malbec episode, I have lots of friends into Malbecs. Usually a big PG fan but because of you, I’m always up for trying new wines.

QOTD: I’m a 23 year old law student…. retirement seems so far away… but if I knew I was never going to retire, I’d probably make sure to take time off between changing jobs to travel, or build travel into my work as much as I could so I can spend time with my friends and family AND see new places.

    BTW I LOVED this QOTD.
I want to go on the next Thundercruise!!!

  68. April 27, 2009

    sam

Fun to have you back Gary! With a wonderful, laid-back guest.

So he brings you your slippers eh?

Malbec was for a long time a favorite grape of mine. The Broquel Trapiche 2006 remains one of my favs for a 15$ bottle (Can. dollars)!

QOTD: I believe there is so much to discover in this world that work is only a small proportion of our individual development. The reason why people look forward to retirement, in my opinion, is because working 40hrs. a week or more, limits the amount of time you have to involve yourself in “leisure” activities. I’m looking forward to my retirement: to play music, read books, drink wine, and be spontaneous with each day!

    Thanks!

Pretty good show but three Malbecs?? 2 out of 3 meh. Pretty good guest, and I also love the Grass fed beef. I can’t wait to try it with a decent Malbec. Should I read his book?
GV, what do you think about the conflict of interest on the wine blogs concerning the Wine Advocate writers?
I’ve been retired for 5 years(since I was 48) and I love it. Sometimes it’s boring, then I watch some WLTV or go play tennis or go wine shopping. Of coarse I didn’t have job I loved but it’s the comute and the mandatory 40 or 50 hours that suck.

    Gentleman, nice work today!

    Four thoughts:

    1. Gary, the knuckle cracking at the start of the show was scary. Thought you were going to punch Tim in the neck. Glad you didn’t.
    2. Love the food talk. Always love to hear about wine in that context.
    3. Gary, love to see you feel the same about bees as I do.
    4. And lastly, to you and Tim, thanks for the South-Parkesque 69 comments.

QOTD: Planning on working ’till we keel over. With luck, 4 hours billable, and the rest in the gardens or kitchen.

Hey Gary, I was watching the NFL draft on ESPN, and there was a Jets fan that looked both excited and confused at the same time after the trade anouncement and eventual pick of Mark Sanchez, and from the split second that ESPN’s camera had on this guy, he looked a lot like you, so I was just wondering if you were at the draft, and if that fan was you?

  73. April 27, 2009

    pepel

thanks for the shout-out to the Philippines GV! great ep. I wish I could sell 47 billion copies of something, may it be tissue paper or a book or USB flash drives or pirated DVDs.

QOTD: Just left finance to pursue wine. I want to make wine till I die. No joke.

  74. April 27, 2009

    Tim Ferriss

    Hi All,

Thanks for all the great comments and thoughts on the QOTD! Finally making it out to WLTV to do the show with Gary was a blast. We’ve known each other for some time, and the Malbec encounter was overdue.

@Josh, you can absolutely live well in Argentina for $20,000/year. You can get a hanger steak sandwich (”vacio” in Spanish) for less than $2, and that cut would cost $20+ in an organic shop in the US. Rent has gone up for non-Spanish speaking residents of Buenos Aires because there are more tourists and English-speaking brokers take a large check. That said, you can live within the city but not in the center (think Brooklyn) for cheap, and you can also consider other areas on Argentina. My favorite is probably Cordoba.

Thanks for watching the episode and adding to the dialogue, everyone. It was really fun.

    76 is a complicated number… :)

I disagree, Gary. Dustin Keller was a pretty impressive player towards the end of the year. He was Favre’s go to guy because god knows Cotchery couldn’t handle it.

Thanks for clearing up the draft dis on Mark “dirty” Sanchez. Hes a great player and you’ll love him. Clos De Los Siete is made and owned by Michel Rolland. Love the show on malbec its a grape varietal that we use a lot in our restaurant because of its versatility. GO CHARGERS!!!!!!

  77. April 27, 2009

    DrEdwardo

QOTD: they don’t. The day I am no longer curious is when my priorities and decisions will change.

Gary, as much as your guests are often interesting, your guest episodes, in all their unedited glory, have a much lower QPR (where Price is the time needed to watch them). Sort of like what happened to the Wine Spectator. Started off being mostly about wine but evolved into a lifestyle/cigar smoking/big house/vacation spot/bling magazine.

As a consequence I end up just listening to the episode while doing something else – like my income taxes for example. And just listening to them presents their own problems as I have noticed that in almost all the guest episodes, I have absolutely no problem hearing you but can barely hear your guest(s). So if I turn up the volume to hear them you blast out.

IMHO, you should keep the guest episodes down to 1 every 2 weeks max.

Regardless, you still usually bring the thunder.

    Edwardo

Can’t disagree with you more… Trading up for Sanchez at the #5 spot – HUGE mistake. Only a 1st rounder and 2nd rounder Plus 3 guys??? Hey, Coleman and Elam aren’t Hall of Famers, but they are solid players. To give them up and your 2nd rounder: JETS could have had Michael Crabtree and Maluega (USC linebacker) with those two picks.

Sanchez could turn out to be a good QB, but the odds are against it. Why take that risk at so high a cost? Bad, bad trade/pick… BAD. Don’t talk yourself into it.

  79. April 27, 2009

    Pete B

Nice to have you back and I’m really glad you clarified the Draft Day reaction. I agreed that we had some other needs which must be filled but I really liked the move. I appreciate the fact that the front office is not afraid to make the big moves and take a chance a possible franchise QB. I’m also a huge Shonn Greene fan. He is nasty and I think he will make an instant impact.

Getting to the wine, I am really enjoying Malbec right now. I had a 2007 Amancaya Malbec that I loved.

QOTD – If retirement was not an option, I would probably quit my job and try to pursue some of my other interests.

  80. April 27, 2009

Fantastic guest. I can see why his book sold as well as it did.

    TIM!!
Fun episode…but i have to admit..Im afraid of bees!

QOTD: OK, I dont see “retirement” necessarily as a time to stop doing something you hate, but rather a time set aside for doing other things… Perhaps things that you worked so hard for in the 1st place..
I would love to buy a vineyard with Glen..winecrazy!! :)
AND..I would love to travel… I would spend years in Tuscany making wine..painting…loving…and years in France learning to cook their way…(I did this for a short time, btw..) Years in Spain perfecting the siesta…years on an island learning to surf…
I would do this until I couldnt any longer..

I am starting to like Malbecs, too. I do agree with one of the other postings that most of the guests are not knowledgeable about wines. I would love to see another “expert” on and see how each of you rate and compare the wines.

    Great show!
I have been drinking Malbec for the last ten years and it remains my favorite wine, so it was nice to learn a little more today. I had been thinking to write in because I tried a great one recently called Viña Amalia 2005. I bought it because it was $10 and the other 2005s were between $15 and $50, with most close to $50. I’ll never know what is so great about those ones.
My question is about vintage. Are the 2005 Argentine Malbecs supposed to be an outstanding vintage? If so, does vintage quality apply to a specific winery or to a whole growing region? Could that mean that all 2005 Malbecs from Mendoza are excellent, or at least better than some other year? Can a fine vintage apply to whole large regions – Mendoza, Napa, Tuscany – or is it more specific than that?

hi Gary..I noticed you attended the draft and you looked pretty upset about giving away sooooo much for a 16 game starter named sanchez..I think the kid has some big time upside but understand your frustration..Alot is riding on this kid because if he does not pan out this deal will set the jets back for years..Hoping for the best for your sake. I have enough problems being a cowboy fan…take care

Bother way great show today keep bringing the thunder

Awesome episode. Love Tim’s one-liners that he sneaks in here and there. Crazy thing: 2 minutes after the bee appeared on screen, a real bee flew into my room. Had to pause the video to chase it out.

QOTD: Still in college now, so if retirement is out of the question then I’d better do something I really like for the rest of my life. Like drinking wine.

Sanchez is a great pick up for you, but we got the best nickname of the draft Frank “The Tank” Summers.

I plan on retiring from my career, taking the pension, if they still exist then, and finding another job.

    Great guest, Gary!

QOTD: I’m only 23, and I am still trying to find a work/field that I’m really passionate about. I think you’d agree, once you find your passion, retirement is something you could live without. My thought is that most older people answering this QOTD would say that if retirement wasn’t an option in the end, they would try harder (and maybe risk more) to find a work/life that they LOVE in the present. That said, I think a lot of people discover new passions during retirement, which is awesome – perhaps life is a journey of accumulating passions?

BTW, had an amazing time on the Thundercruise, I’ve been raving to everyone and I can’t wait for next year’s!

All this talk about retirement- Some people actually retire so they can spend some time with their family. Imagine that, it is not all about hating what you do for a living.

Hopefully Gary will slow down a little when his baby is born because missing the first time your kid rolls over, shats the carpet, laughs for no reason, pisses like a fountain when being changed(of course if GV can put the stem on the apple), eats your canolli, runs off with your parmesian cheese, and points to your hot neighbor and says boobies in front of the wife! those memories are worth more than any cash derived from cursing at a bunch of web 2.0ers.

I thought Tim did a good job on the show. I have to say at first I thought Gary had Woody Harrelson on when I saw the preview image.

What’s up with the Honey Oat Cheerios bee flying around? LOL trying to get it with the bio-dynamic book.

    Good oak monster discussion.

QOTD: I would probably take more vacations in regular intervals and longer (the light bulb just went off). Just worrying about the hustle now so I can “retire” sooner….and in reality I would never retire it would drive me nuts doing nothing.

Gary, your face was so funny when that bee came strolling in. Time turned back to child GV in a second.

QoTD: I would probably choose the 4hr work week for my eternal career. Although drinking wine every day wouldn’t be too bad either.

What a great review of 3 Malbecs. I too am a Malbec fan and I added a great deal to my wine vocabulary tonight from Gary’s descriptions. It can daunting to translate flavors into words but Gary does a phenomenal job at describing what the rest of us can only taste. Love Tim’s question and if you remove “Retirement” entirely from the “Life Equation” then we will all be forced to choose professions that we absolutely love instead of a mundane job that we suffer through until retirement.

  114. April 27, 2009

    TheAndySan

When I first read The 4-Hour Workweek, I was working at Wal-Mart as a cashier. I hated that job so much! A couple of days later, I decided to buy the book on my break and I walked out. Ever since that happened, I haven’t seen a single copy of the book in that Wal-Mart since.

I tried blogging for a living, and while I manage to make money from it (about $25 a month), it’s not enough to stop working a regular job. I was incredibly foolish to quit Wal-Mart so suddenly.

I did get a job in Februaryas a tech support guy, but I was released a month into it because I wasn’t “catching on”. I thought I was beginning to get into the groove of things, but not according to my supervisors.

Right now, I’m unemployed and I need to find a job soon before I run out of money. I’m looking to move into the slightly bigger city of Bowling Green Ohio in July-August, but I have no money and no job. Things are looking grim, but I’m sure I’ll be able to find some kind of work.

QOTD – This could just be my age talking (I’m 23 but lots of people think I’m 16-18), but I never had retirement in mind. “If you do what you love, then you’ll never work a day in your life” is my motto. My version of retirement is being able to make a living doing what I love and no longer requiring a job for income.

Until that day, I’ll have to work a regular job in order to earn enough money to live. I’m fine with that, so long as I continue to work on my passion during that time and remember that I won’t be working in a regular job forever.

Sorry this comment is super-long, I just had some things to get off my chest.

I wanted to tell Tim that I went to the Gran Bar Danzon in Buenos Aires when I was there in December 2007, before spending 2 weeks fly fishing in Patagonia. I agree with him its a great bar!

We also discovered “Shoeless Joe’s El Alamo Bar” because we needed to find an American sports bar so we could watch the Redskins beat the Cowboys in their final preseason game to get into the playoffs. Too bad they lost to the Seahawks in the 1st round… They serve HUGE pitchers of beer at that bar too.

Awww, Gary, your “bromance” with Tim is quite cute. :-) It’s obvious you guys are good friends and enjoy being around each other — that’s nice to see. Yo, you should check out Heller’s Organically Grown Cachagua Cab. Mr. Heller is a great guy and told me that if anyone drinks his wines and gets a headache he’ll refund them the price of the bottle. This guarantee is void if you have more than one bottle.

Woah!!! Gary – this is a GENIUS episode!!! I thoroughly enjoyed every minute. You and Tim make one dynamite team. You guys ought to do more shows!

I adore Tim too; loved his preso at Blog World Expo last year *almost* as much as I loved yours. LOL!

Seriously though, you should totally have this episode transcribed and made into a wee eBook. hehe. You two cover a whole bunch of great metaphors and innuendos. ;) Lmao at the 4.5 hour workweek. And wine + love handles. What a h00t.

Re Tim’s question – as a committed serial entrepreneur, I never ever plan to retire. It has the word “tire” in it. haha. I love what I do with a PASSION and care about peeps more than anything. So, I’ll always be involved in some business projects.

I’m always raving about how Tim’s 4HWW is NOT about the four hours. It’s about doing your dream life *NOW*. Not waiting til the kids are grown, you’ve lost weight, got more money, got the right education, blah blah blah. ;D

QOTD: I just turned 24, and I’m not even thinking as far as 30, never mind 65!!

BTW I loved the female innuendo you guys worked into today’s episode- the Argentinan women, Tim’s “one night stand” comment, etc. Risque! Remember, the core of this show is wine, which means your audience is, for all intensive purposes, 21+, so don’t be afraid to get a little adult now and then!

    Keep up the good work.

Malbec. That was the first bottle of wine I ever purchased at a liquor store. This year. I’m young. 2008 Crios Malbec by Susan Balbo. Gary mentioned her! Is that one over oaked?

    QOTD: Retire? Sounds boring…

  132. April 28, 2009

    apj_bobswineguy

I had to stop this at the 27:14 mark and comment: (b4 I forget): this is a great conversation. Tim says he is a “naive” taster. BUT, actually, since he drinks wine a lot WITH meals, he is, IMHO, an expert opinion. Someone we in the wine trade should listen to.

It also makes me think of the fallacy of wine critics judging 40-50 wines in one sitting.
Many times, the “blockbuster taste” of a wine becomes palate-fatigue after a few glasses.

I’m glad Tim expresses the context in which he judges a wine. Earlier, he said, yes-if I was just having a glass of Malbec #2. Many times, I have had a person say they love a wine after only one sip.

  133. April 28, 2009

    Michael D

Loved the show about malbec, GV, cuz it’s a fantastic varietal.

QOTD: If you take retirement out of the equation, people would probably concentrate on finding a career that makes them happy instead of focusing so much on money. Money is important, but not more so than happiness and mental health. I recently “retired” from lawyering to take up teaching. The money is not as good, but the satisfaction is far greater for me. However, I now have to work harder at finding good value wines! Like malbecs.

  134. April 28, 2009

    apj_bobswineguy

Great show! Not a big malbec fan though. I think they are popular because they are cheap.
Oddly, The super-expensive ones are not as appealing as the mid-range ones (to me).
I have had the good fortune to try many different malbecs in many different price ranges.

Chile is smart. Do not bet on one varietal (like malbec, shiraz, carmenere). The picture is getting too cloudy in the Argentina Malbec category. The bad to mediocre are dragging down the exceptional.

  135. April 28, 2009

    Tom_in_London

I enjoyed the show (great exploration of “why do/don’t you like the wine” and exposure of “the oak monster”).

I have to answer the QOTD for Tim: I don’t plan on retiring either. I plan on “doing other things”. I’ve always been able to find things that I find enjoyable that can also earn an income – and so I plan to continue doing that which I love for the rest of my life.

  141. April 28, 2009

Gary, it’s great to have you back. I had to dig through the archives to get my fix for the last 10 days or so. I don’t know what I’m going do when WLTV only makes you 99% happy…

QOTD: I only plan on retiring in the sense that I won’t be working for someone else anymore – I’ll be my own boss. In that sense, I’ll be retiring in the next 10-15 years and I’m not out of college yet. Go Blue!

Great show today! Gary I love your show but especially love it when you have an interesting quest on the show. I am intrigued by the book and will now have to read it now.

    QOTD:

I really look forward to some form of retirement even though I love what I do. But there are not many breaks from my work and I love traveling with my bride of 22 years. My work is extremely portable by design which is good and bad. Being in the business of Promotional Marketing I understand opportunity comes and goes and the need to jump when it presents itself! But if retirement was out of the picture I would try to figure out a way to get breaks today and in the future because I am not sure that I could keep up this level of production long (70’s or 80’s as I am 43 now) term. BTW I am not really sure what retirement really looks like since I do love what I do so much. A great and thought provoking QOTD for me. Is the typical model of “retirement” for me? Wow I didn’t expect to be considering this today!

    Thanks!

    Steve

Good show (even though there was talk about the Jets). Learned something new. Will go out and try these.

Great show! I haven’t left a comment for a long time, but felt compelled to do so today. I have read Tim’s book and, although I can’t buy in to 4 hours of work (I love work), I implemented many of the ideas. Thanks Tim!

I don’t plan to ever retire. When I’m not passionate about working and have built up enough nest egg, I plan to do Missions work, volunteering, etc.

  147. April 28, 2009

    timshady

I was excited to watch this having read Tim’s book. His beliefs are different than Gary’s in terms of work, life goals and interaction with customers. Tim is more: do things more efficiently (and outsource) so you can spend time doing the things you love. Gary is more: do what you love everyday and enjoy life all the time. Tim wants you to train your audience/clients how and when to contact you. Gary wants constant interaction from all types of media. I think both are great paths depending on how they fit into your life.

Tim’s book is great, but you will pick and choose what speaks to you. 100% of the material will not apply to everyone’s life.

    Great show!

Didnt know you could sing, GV!

QOTD: I’d love to do what I love doing without having to meet quotas, budgets, datelines that we have everyday! If I can go cruising, I would…otherwise, I do hope I’ve attained a good palate by then to be able to comment on wines, drinks whether for publication purposes or maybe even for any food industry!

Love the malbec and will find the 2007 Bodegas Goulart Malbec Classic for sure! Thanks again for crushing it – glad you had a blast on the ship! Maybe next year!!

QOTD: I can’t picture me not working – or doing something that I love! I’m pretty fortunate – I have a creative day job and an exciting night job selling wine!!! If I could have any life I would choose the one I’m living!!

I have been all over Malbec since last year because of the price and the quality, as you noted.

QOTD: I’ve not thought about life as working and retirement. I guess I’ve always considered that I’m picking a career that I will love to do for the rest of my life. It’s not simply a means to retirement but rather a way to live.

    Good show.

Very interesting QOTD – best in a long time. I have not given retirement much thought as it would be a long time away. So talking about it is rather abstract. I guees if I was told economics had been thrown upside down and retirement was not possible, then I would stop saving for it #1. I would take more time to enjoy life. I would cultivate a more balanced lifestyle. I might pace myself a little more (being a workaholic). And would think a whole lot more about the topic.

Thanks for the info on Malbecs. I learned a lot! I also am not a fan of “chalky” flavoring in my wine. Side note… Tim Farris is a “drink of water” to this woman’s eyes. Now,I might go buy the book, Ha!

1st episode for me after the cruise. Still pumped…go Slingshot. She needs to post here. I am in the process of retiring but only in a sense as I am changing the type of business I am doing not stopping altogether. Don’t know how I would stop working altogether and have the money to live on with a 50% cut in my retirement money anyhow. Had a lot of Malbecs, just going through my notes now from all of the tastings. I counted 14 and most of them were good and good buys.

  167. April 28, 2009

    Phil G

QOTD – Here’s how I think of things: I want to ‘work’ doing something that is challenging, exciting, interesting. I love music, tennis, wine, movies, traveling… but I also need food, a house, and want a family. So I think of a job as something that not only is a source of income, but also a source of personal fulfillment. Time away from the tennis and family better be worth it to me.

Still, I don’t want to be defined by my career. Again I want to have a family and spend meaningful time with my kids/wife. I also want to travel, go to concerts, enjoy new things, and ‘live’ life. 2 weeks vacation and a 60 hour work weeks will likely get in the way of that. This is going to be a challenge worth figuring out – but I am fairly certain of my priorities.

Longer term, I don’t think about retirement – I would rather take a month leave-of-absence from work next year than wait until I am 70 to do that. I’ll continue to work as long as I want to (or need to). But I am not going to put off everything else until I’m old.

  168. April 28, 2009

    RT

QOTB: I have never really expected to be able to fully retire. What I do expect/hope to be able to do is slow down in 40 years or so and move from a hands-on kind of job and move to more of an advisory role. Hopefully by then I’ll be wise enough to pull it off (or have enough grey hairs to fool people into thinking that I’m wise enough =D)

  169. April 28, 2009

    Kristen

What a great episode!! I just bought a Malbec over the weekend and it was amazing!

QOTD: I think I would do what I love without thinking I had to “make money” at it as much. I am sorta there now (at 40) but my DH is not with me there. It kills him to think I might choose to do something that makes little to no money…

GV, fine show and excellent rapport with Tim…great to see that as successful as he is, there is deep appreciation for the $10 bottle of Thunder.
We enjoy Argentinian Malbecs on a regular basis due the quality/price ratio, since there is lots of good stuff in the $9-$15 range. Have tasted a couple of French Malbec only bottles, but have just not been impressed…price wa sup there and the oak monster attacked. I can see how the French would want to horn in on the Malbec action, but the fruit is beaten up and not as apparent.

BTW, what is the deal with these folks that rush to be the first poster, have nothing to say, and then check out the show later on? Maybe they will have a better chance to be in the top 10 once they retire.

  172. April 28, 2009

    Zino

Glad you don’t dwell on the legs. There’s a myth that lots of legs running down the inside of the glass is an indicator of a good wine. This has nothing to do with quality, it’s simply the alcohol separating from the wine.

QOTD: I would be exhausted.. Having to work until I was 85? Please don’t let that happen. I want to move to Arizona or CapeCod and play golf. You can play lots and lots of golf Gary!

I can’t believe Gary pulled out some old-school Martika! LOVE IT.

Enjoyed seeing Tim on the show.

QOTD: I’d work forever but I’d make sure it was something that wasn’t making me wish for a shorter life. My own business perhaps, something with flexibility and most importantly something that is consistently enjoyable.

I just hope that Malbec doesn’t turn into another Pinot Grigio or Pinot Noir, where every large, commercial wine producer puts out a malbec.

I just enjoyed my first Xarel-Lo. It was 2005 Castell Roig, Xarel-Lo. GV liked the 2006 about a year ago. I found the 2005 last summer and it was tasty today. Perfect on a warm sunny day with a light dinner.

liked the show, have similar vocabulary problems describing wine, especially the aromatics. liked the final breakdown on the oak monster as not being sustainable over 3 or 4 glasses, very good job of translating by Gary.

QOTD: Technically, already ‘retired’ once, but it was from a job I loved (Navy) as that was a young mans game. So now I work a different job. And if I ever retire from this, expect I’ll do another job…so no change really.

  181. April 28, 2009

Hah! Thanks for the shout out Gary, the cruise was awesome. Anyone who thought about going but didn’t should definitely check it out next year. Quite a few good malbecs and other Argentine wines at the super tasting for sure (Poesia, Ksana, the Camino del Inca was really tasty…70% Tannat). I love malbecs with marinated skirt steak, Costa Rican style (shout out to Irazu in Chicago).

QOTD: Wow, that’s a tough question. I would hope one could continue to do whatever makes them happiest, or concentrate harder on trying to get to that point for the long-run. Lots of people seem to wait for retirement to travel, but I’m trying to see as many places as possible now as well…so many amazing places to see, you gotta start young and see the world whenever you can.

Great show Gary and Tim! I just got finishing reading the Four Hour Work Week, two weeks ago. Loved it! and plan to read it again with a notebook handy.

Great show. I like to hear about the wines you taste on the show and then Gary gives a few of his favorites from the same grape.

Hey guys! Quality show as always. Tim is an amazing guy. The bits of random knowledge you dropped throughout the episode on various things was great.

QOTD: ‘Retire’ is such a misnomer. It makes it seem like a person gives up his or her ‘life’ of the past 30 or years to finally be happy. I don’t ever expect my life to be without projects (be it people or products/companies), so I plan to move on to new projects or finally finish some old ones. ‘Retirement’ will just be a formal deal not to work at a specific company on a given project anymore… no reason not to continue another on my own or somewhere else… always developing or working towards something new ;)

I hope for the best in Sanchez but I have to be honest GV, it’s not going to happen. Nadda’.

And oh hell yes on the Argentina shout outs. I will add as well, Argentina rips bruts (think champagne) and syrahs (insanely underrated) and a crap load of solid whites, think torrentes, chardonnay and others. It’s not just about malbec done here.

And there is no cow on earth that can compete with the beef here. Fact.

First off, had an amazing time on the cruise and after the shirt ripping I can vouch you are definitely getting into ping pong.

QOTD: For me work is all about continued learning. I could never work a job where I didn’t get the opportunity to challenge myself. My current job started to get that way and I forced myself into a new role where I could expand my responsibilities. I now enjoy work again as I am learning.

I think as long as you make that you play you will never find yourself truly retired. Even if it isn’t a traditional job, I think there are always opportunities to do something interesting and exciting.

In this episode I thank for two things. Firstly I was so taken aback on your ESPN reaction, that I immediately wanted an answer from u via Twitter (@resamor)-now I understand, when listening to ur rational & detailed explanation. Good One: The bee was a fantastic little addition to the thunder show.

For me, Salentein Malbecs or Las Moras malbecs have been keeping their quality for a while now, I recommend you try them.

    GREAT episode with good company….

QOTD: I don’t have a retirement plan, and as much as I am pursuing two very different careers simultaneously (actor by day, wine director/sommelier by night) I can’t imagine what in the WORLD I would do if I wasn’t working in some capacity. Things I love about this episode:
    1. Guest Tim Ferris. Tim and Gary are my two favorite online personalities! They seem very comfortable together and had a good energy here.
    2. The fact that Tim is totally UNINTERESTED in football, and sits there patiently as Gary goes on and on and on about the Jets. Hilarious!
    3. How Tim refuses the bucket every time.
    4. The bee flying into the set. First time ever, apparently, that this has happened.
    5. How Tim mouths the words “Oak Monster” at precisely the same time as Gary. Clearly, he’s heard this before. Very funny!

I’m not a huge wine guy, and watch this for Gary’s passion, but that first wine they were raving about is something I might have to try!

Thanks for a great Malbec show. Tim Ferriss was fun. But what’s with the bee freak out, Gary? Is it fear or just a lack of comfort with “nature”? Maybe its time to get out more…

Tim must have gotten a very informal info on Malbec’s appearance in the New World. Malbec DID come directly from Bordeaux. (Michel Pouget, in 1868) That’s France. Italians had NOTHING to do with it’s migration to Argentina, though you are correct in that there was a great deal of emigration from Western Europe in general before the mid 19th c.

On the other hand, he appears, by no means to be a dummy on his health, and the grass-fed, high Omega-3 levels contributions to health. The typical American, due to extremely unhealthy diet and lack of exercise, consumes about only 1/10th the omega-3 needed (the good stuff), and 20 to 30, even FIFTY times too much Omega-6 (bad stuff) for healthy blood cholesterol levels.

As the son of Brasilians, who are also huge carnivores, I can attest that they also grill and barbecue (churrascaria) with nothing but rock salt, to produce a meat’s pure, simple flavor. As a little kid, in middle class America of the 1960’s, I found myself constantly irritated that there was never any ketchup around when we cooked out. I found it troublingly ‘un-American’ at the time.

Love Malbecs from all corners. Balbo, Archeval, and Catena’s offerings always VG. Chalky Cot/Cahors, and rustic French is also honest, and good wine.
Clos de la Siete is awesome, and well priced, but it’s a blend, using 50-80% Malbec, and Bordeaux varietals. Amancaya is 50/50 Mal-Cab from Catena and Rothschild. Delicious.

QotD – no change. I’ll prob work till I drop. I like to follow Joeph Campbell’s sage wisdom, introduced to me by my dad, many years ago… “Follow Your Bliss”. Yet, in practice, that being wine, woman, and song, he’s still not so sure about the can of worms he opened there.

The Thunder Cruise WAS Amazing! Thank you Wine Library!
Tim was a great guest. I enjoyed his interaction with you Gary. The Oak Monster mimic was hilarious. Malbecs are near the top of my list currently, right near Tempranillos, Pinot Noirs, and Chenin Blancs.

QOTD: Right now I want to retire so that I can do more enjoyable things than my current job, but I’m hoping to blur the lines between work and retirement before then.

  207. April 29, 2009

    teckdeck2008

Great guest, and ironically i got into wine in the same way. I took a trip to south america and had a bunch of wine when i was visiting argentina and enjoy malbec although i lean towards australian malbec more. So I understand why you like Malbec so much Tim.

Qotd: I actually do not look forward to retiring. If it happens it happens, but i want to become a consulting engineer with a firm or on my own. If the the stars align properly, i would like to run my own firm eventually. But with consultant work i hope to make it one of those things where i can take less hours and have more control as i get older so that it will feel more like a hobby i do for money rather than a job. And I feel like all jobs should be like that in some respect, it shouldn’t be just to make money but to enjoy what your doing.

I just had my first Malbec. I really liked it. I can completely see how this wine would be great with a big chunk of meat. I drank the bottle over 2 days and shared a glass with my neighbor who had also never had a Malbec. It was a great 11.00 bottle of wine called Los Carbos 2006, Malbec.

great fun inspiring show. really liked watching gary zone in on tim’s comments on taste, wines, headaches, cures, and insights. the wisdom shines through.

qotd: Retirement to me is more about freedom, If you don’t feel free then you want to retire. TO work 100hrs a week doing something you love compared to 40hours something you don’t love, even tho both could be in the same field. I mean I like cooking I work in a restaurant but its a job I have no freedom, I can’t just take time off to travel and eat (to expensive) nor can I work 100hrs a week (industry is to slow to be paid). so thats my answer as cryptic as it is

I always enjoy every episode, but this must be my favorite; not only due to the fact that I have been a huge Melbac fan since the Wall Street Journal club started sending me bottles, but that my personal mentor Timothy Ferriss was on and drank his wine as a true gentleman should. So very impressed by everything he does.

I love Mendoza and Argentina in general… the women in Buenos Aires are incredible. I can state this openly because my girlfriend hates it when I watch WLTV and she’ll never visit the site so I’m safe. Quote (in German): “Schaust du wieder die Kettensäge an?” Translation: “Are you watching the chainsaw again?” Kinda what she thinks of GaryVee’s voice. Oh well…

but I think I’m gonna be flyin’ solo when it comes to the cruise next year. Don’t think I can convince her to come.

Hilarious- I laughed out loud twice during this episode, Toy Soldier! OMG, I’m crying here, tears are flowing.

QOTD: Tough one. I do like what I do, but I want to do more not less, and I alweays thought about retirement what other job I would want to do if money were not an issue. So if I could never retire, my immeadiate priorities would be to focus more on the amount of time I spend doing things that are purely for my pleasure and not for my pocket.

The title of this episode is the reason I checked it out. I wondered what could possibly be interesting enough to make a four hour episode. Glad I did. I love the Four Hour Work Week, I changed my life after reading it. As a result, my answer would be exactly what I am doing now. I don’t plan on retiring.

Love too that Tim loves wine but doesn’t really know how to talk about it. He was pretty graceful in trying to figure out a way to get Gary to lead. Great stuff, and I will have to check out some more Malbec, being sure to avoid oaky monsters. Loved the chalk thing too. It brought back memories of elementary school and cleaning erasers.

To Tim: As an advertising copywriter, I’m lucky enough to be paid for something I do naturally: come up with pithy one-liners. In fact, more than once, I’ve been working on a project and had a meta moment when I said to myself, “I can’t believe I get paid for this s**t.” One iconic example is when we were developing an automated chatbot and had to think up all the dirty words we could for the filter. Side note: the British are by far the masters of swearing.

To Gary: As an advertising copywriter, I am appalled at the flagrant misrepresentation of this episode’s title. I accuse you, sir, of false advertising. You have overstated the content of your product by almost 700%. I demand that you make restitution to the Vayner Nation in the form of free secret packs every month for a year.

QOTD: That’s a great question. I finally started my dream job last year (full-time arts writer with a little wine writing thrown in), and while I love it, I make almost no money. We can’t even save for a house. While I’d be happy doing this for the rest of my life, I can already see next steps – eventually becoming an editor if we start a family (or not), transitioning into writing a column as I get older.

If we were never going to retire, maybe I’d take the money I’ve started socking into that 401(K) and put it toward a relaxing vacation. Ha.

There’s no way I could outsource any part of my job to anyone (journalism’s annoying like that :-) ), but I definitely need to learn how to say “no” to 60-hour work weeks and work less from home.

Great show, guys! I’ll be looking for that red label in Madison.

QOTD – One of the most interesting QOTD’s yet. I would find a job in the wine and/or travel business, which are 2 of my passions. I am trying to plan my “retirement” so I leave my current profession and transition to the next one. I don’t see myself just sitting around or playing golf every day when I stop my regular job.

This was a great episode, with a great guest, you are blessed to know such wonderful people and be able to call them your friends.

I love Malbec’s and will be looking for a Cahor’s to expand my palate as most of my tasting has been from Argentina.

QOTD – I have been working for the past 39+ as a respiratory therapist and love what I do each and every day. I have been a reserve police officer for 29+ years and also love that aspect each and every day. I do not think of retirement. God willing I will be able to work until my tasks are done.\

So long as I make enough to buy wine, I will be happy to work.

Great episode. Love Malbec, Clos des Andes especially. I have heard good things about Susana Balbos’ wines.
QOTD: If retirement wasnt in the cards, being in a public safety job, I would have to find work that was less stressful. Life would be short for certain if not.

47 billion books sold? Wow! That’s i,pressive since the world population is estimated to be just under 7 billion people. I will have to search for at least one of the 6 or 7 copies that I should own. Haha. Good show. I also drink a lot of malbec in search of gaminess and earthiness–read terroir.

QOTD: I would not change anything, as I refrain from putting all of my “eggs” into retirement. Retirement is in the future, and is unpredictable, so I make sure that I use a sufficient amount of my eggs now for my and my family’s present enjoyment. I am also fortunate that I find my work rewarding, and I am my own boss.

Hope you guys had time to make out after the show. QOTD: I haven’t even thought about it yet so as of right now if changes nothing for me.

Decent show. I have been enjoying malbecs myself lately.

Retire is just the wrong term. To retire is to die. I have always thought I would just change jobs until I feel like I have done enough.

Yowens took the thunder out of my next comment by making it first LOL!

I thought the guest was fine but brought very little to table. Tim’s book’s reviews at Amazon lead me to think I am not missing anything by not buying it. Sounds like a rehash of common sense and old ideas. If I am wrong I will never know cuz I don’t care.

    Torque-it

This was a great show GV. As a 2nd generation Argentinean, I soaked up this episode like a crusty piece of bread sopping up the chimichurri and juices from the parilla!

Profound QOTD. As a govt biologist at the tail end of a career, I’m thinking I’d do a reverse career – work toward more time in the field, less supervision, paperwork, and pay. Get back to the things that drove me to this job… a Jacque Cousteau sense of wonder, Marlin Perkins sense of adventure, and a Aldo Leopold’s appreciation for nature’s bounty and our place in the world.

Unfortunately – the video kept dropping out at the 30 minute mark. Therefore, I did not get to see the rest of the show or the QOTD.
it seems (from the other comments) that it had to do with where i want to be when I grow uo. I would love to have a place in Boston and a place in Charleston.

    Nice epsd.
QOTD: Don’t plan on retiring and picked up the style from my grandparents. Overrated, and yes there is only so much golf you can play. If I were to retire, I would enjoy what I do from day to day less. BTW, I’ll be picking up a copy of your book Tim.
