Great show Gary, always nice to see you try world class wines. Thanks for the heads up on the 98 Rieussec. The 74 Mayacamas must have been a real treat. I have some older Togni’s that I hope one day will be as fun to try. QOTD 1986 Chateau Gruard Larouse, still young but great complexity developing.

Thanks again Gary for all you are doing for us here in Nash-Vegas. I was at the lunch today, Gary V. is f-ing amazing.

QOTD – 1945 La Mission Haut Brion from a double magnum – unreal!!!!!

QOTD: My daughter, son-in-law and Johnny, who you graciously introduced to the Vayner Nation are arriving later tonight from Jacksonville to spend a week with me here in the SF Bay Area so, naturally, it will be one of the best weekends of the year. Johnny is 6 1/2 months old now and (no bias here) one of the cutest babies I have ever seen. I am pumped!!!!!!!!!!

Had an 82 Mouton last Christmas that I had cellared for 24 years and, Vayniacs, patience brings incredible rewards. Thanks for doing the older stuff Gary.

QOTD: Last year I had an 85 Veuve Clicquot Rose. It was my birth year and also the my parent’s 30th year wedding anniversary. The wine was great, but having the bottle with my parents was better.

    Good episode GV!

Remarkable! 1988 Ch. La Mission Haut Brion @ $200?? I would not hesitate to purchase. Flip-cam episodes are so much fun! QOTD: Concepcion and I are traveling home (Panama) tomorrow (saturday) afternoon, after more than two weeks traveling. I have not had an old wine in a while.

This a continuation of my earlier comment. I have been very fortunate in being able to taste some very old and great wines. Some of these were “Ah Ha!” wines, in that they changed my perspective on wine in general. Others were just great experiences in tasting great old wines. I was privileged to be able to buy (over a two year period, both in the last 10 years) two bottles of 1941 Inglenook Cabernet Sauvignon. This was a 100 point wine by Wine Spectator (in repeated tastings over years), and was rated by WS the number 10 best wine ever made in recorded wine history. The first bottle was definitely in the the 3 best bottles of wine I have ever tasted. The second was not so good, yet was an amazing wine for its age. As you so frequently say, old wines depend on the bottles. I also had the honor of attending a dear friend’s 78th birthday, celebrated at Fleur de Ly in San Francisco, where I had a 1917 Vintage Port that blew all twenty of the attendees away, and I have always put it in the the top three wines I have ever tasted. Perhaps the the greatest “Ah Ha!” wine I ever had was a 10 year old Grand Cru Burgundy that I tasted in the mid 1980’s that forever changed my perspective on Chardonnay based wines. Before this, I was convinced that the best California Chardonnay was always superior to white Burgundy (I have to admit that the runner up was a Mayacamus Chardonnay).

But given all of the above comments, I suppose my final reaction to today’s program is that I loved it, and always love retrospective tastings of great wines.

I repeat myself, but this is definitely one of my favorite episodes of Wine Library TV.

GV – this show kicked some serious booty.

I love that you shared some of the classic “big boys” with us. I wanted to see more of these wines. I can’t wait for the follow up episodes.

    Great job!

QOTD – 1989 Haut Brion – The sad part was, I was too young to appreciate what the hell I was drinking!

    Happy Birthday to Mama Vaynerchuk.

It’s my mom’s birthday too, we’ll be enjoying dinner (and wine) with her on Sunday as well.

Enjoy the day with your family!

    lunch looked pretty rippin’
Had a 1974 Mondavi Reserve last year. A little tired tasting but still lots of interest/ pleasure…
Gonna dig into a 1979 Reserve (my birth-year) coming up soon.
    Have a great trip.

    Love the quark knock-down!
QOTD: Haven’t had any older wines yet- I’ve always consumed from the 90+% that are meant to be drunken now.

this was a great show. i would love to see you do more collector/older wine shows, if only because that’s a dimension we don’t see on the show very often.

qotd: i have never really had any older wines, and your experience with that sauternes is partially the reason for that. i’m afraid to blow $100+ on a wine that i can’t really be sure of. being only 21 now, i would love to start building a collection that i would still have plenty of time to drink when the time comes, but really don’t know where to start.

The Mayacamas definitely excited me and made me feel better about cellaring a lot of Cali wines.

I’ve had 3 wines from 1978–the year I was married. A Lodi Zin which still had a lot of fruit left in it–had to strain the disintegrated cork from it though. Only paid $5 bones for it. A barbaresco–not that memorable and a Thomas Kruse Chard from Gilroy, CA—very dark and not much left to like about it.

The oldest wine that rocked my socks off was a ‘94 Rubicon that I drank in ‘04. The most recent older wine I had was a Kent Rasmussen ‘99 Cab. Excellent. I paid $20 for it. It drank more like something in the $60. range.

QOTD: No epic wines, but this weekend is my last weekend in Nashville as I’m moving back to Montana on Monday. 9 best years of my life in music city!

    Oh, and go ‘Dores!

I take that back…1997 Renwood Grandmere Zin. That might not count as “old” but it was really really good.

  18. May 1, 2009

    JD_Jonny

The best old wine I’ve had is probably a 1994 Arrowood Cab. I don’t know that I would call it epic, but it was pretty good and an interesting experience because I’ve never really had older wines. I don’t have the wallet for epic wines yet.

This weekend–>studying for my last law school final: Antitrust. It’s going to be rough.

QOTD: I had a 1989 Luneau-Papin Muscadet L’D'Or. Even at 20 years, it was drinking amazingly young.

Thanks a lot for doing this episode. I really like seeing you taste wines like this that are not available to most of us.

The best older wine I’ve had was probably a 1990 Urziger Wurtzgarten Beerenauslese (sp?) from C. H. Berres. I don’t have much experience with older wines, though, and I’m not sure I would quite say it was “mindblowing”, although it was probably the best dessert wine I’ve ever had.

Looks like you had a fun day today. Love the flipcam action.
Why not remove the power button while you tape so there’s no mishaps?

The episode I’ve been waiting for. The old wines I can’t afford. Very interesting episode, off the cuff, like many others recently but GOOD. Serious introspection, I trust your experience and appreciate your efforts.

    W. Miree

    Happy Birthday to your mom!

This was a great show. Unbelievably great wines, and you were relaxed and into what I think is your “real” self: a bono fide, surenuff, experienced wineguy who really loves the what great wine can do when you give it enough time! La Mission Haut Brion is my favorite wine (next to Haut Brion). I had the 1974 Mayacamus in a tasting of 20 of the top 1974 Cabernets from California some 12+ years ago in a tasting with the top collectors in the world, and it placed very high in the competition. I think the 1974 Heitz Martha’s Vineyard came in first….but there was little difference in overall quality.

My wife just called me to dinner, so I will have to continue this later.
