Loving the vintage wines in this episode….not really had many old vintages as of late however but did try the Penfold Grange 2002 yesterday…..was like chewing a bar of chocolate…not impressed.

YOU are the man. Great show! Good to see you a little tipsy. We know what that’s like. Thanks for not dumping the best wine of the day.
I’ll never forget the 1985 Kathryn Kennedy Cab I had in around 1992. Back then it was 50 or 60 bones. Now 100 won’t touch it.

Is it me, or is it a little gross to drink out of the glass and then pour it back into the bottle for someone else to taste. Please remember what’s going on in the world today. (don’t drink out of someone else’s glass and wash your hands! Looking forward to the shows next week with some legends of the wine world.

QOTD: The last older vintage wine which was epic not just the wine but that I tasted with you. It was only a week ago on the Thundercruise, which was the 1996 Leoville Barton. The most recent besides that one was an 83 Margaux and for a 26 year old wine again the color was surprising extremely dark and just a complete appreciation for aging wine.

looks like you drank some serious vino at lunch. really cool. nice.
QOTD; 1962 Chateau Latour, the cedar, leather, and smoke aromatics were amazing. the dark fruits taste of the wine was unbelieveable. an absolute home run when i had this last year. still could last for another decade or two.

That was a stellar show!! You were on fire. It’s awesome and educational to see such rare and interesting wines. I am so impressed with your commitment to the VaynerNation, while rubbing elbows with the big boys, you make time, and go far out of your way to provide us with the privilege of seeing this experience.

QOTd. The closest thing to epic wine, and I assume you mean older wine, would be this year drinking a 1990 Moulin Touchais which was the most balanced desert wine I ever tasted and thoroughly enjoyed. Part 2 – hanging out with family and seeing an old friend.

    Happy Birthday to your mom!

This was a great show. Unbelievably great wines, and you were relaxed and into what I think is your “real” self: a bono fide, surenuff, experienced wineguy who really loves the what great wine can do when you give it enough time! La Mission Haut Brion is my favorite wine (next to Haut Brion). I had the 1974 Mayacamus in a tasting of 20 of the top 1974 Cabernets from California some 12+ years ago in a tasting with the top collectors in the world, and it placed very high in the competition. I think the 1974 Heitz Martha’s Vineyard came in first….but there was little difference in overall quality.

My wife just called me to dinner, so I will have to continue this later.

Thanks a lot for doing this episode. I really like seeing you taste wines like this that are not available to most of us.

The best older wine I’ve had was probably a 1990 Urziger Wurtzgarten Beerenauslese (sp?) from C. H. Berres. I don’t have much experience with older wines, though, and I’m not sure I would quite say it was “mindblowing”, although it was probably the best dessert wine I’ve ever had.

QOTD: I had a 1989 Luneau-Papin Muscadet L’D'Or. Even at 20 years, it was drinking amazingly young.

  45. May 1, 2009

    JD_Jonny

The best old wine I’ve had is probably a 1994 Arrowood Cab. I don’t know that I would call it epic, but it was pretty good and an interesting experience because I’ve never really had older wines. I don’t have the wallet for epic wines yet.

This weekend–>studying for my last law school final: Antitrust. It’s going to be rough.

  46. May 1, 2009

I take that back…1997 Renwood Grandmere Zin. That might not count as “old” but it was really really good.

The Mayacamas definitely excited me and made me feel better about cellaring a lot of Cali wines.

I’ve had 3 wines from 1978–the year I was married. A Lodi Zin which still had a lot of fruit left in it–had to strain the disintegrated cork from it though. Only paid $5 bones for it. A barbaresco–not that memorable and a Thomas Kruse Chard from Gilroy, CA—very dark and not much left to like about it.

The oldest wine that rocked my socks off was a ‘94 Rubicon that I drank in ‘04. The most recent older wine I had was a Kent Rasmussen ‘99 Cab. Excellent. I paid $20 for it. It drank more like something in the $60. range.

this was a great show. i would love to see you do more collector/older wine shows, if only because that’s a dimension we don’t see on the show very often.

qotd: i have never really had any older wines, and your experience with that sauternes is partially the reason for that. i’m afraid to blow $100+ on a wine that i can’t really be sure of. being only 21 now, i would love to start building a collection that i would still have plenty of time to drink when the time comes, but really don’t know where to start.

  52. May 1, 2009

GV – this show kicked some serious booty.

I love that you shared some of the classic “big boys” with us. I wanted to see more of these wines. I can’t wait for the follow up episodes.

    Great job!

QOTD – 1989 Haut Brion – The sad part was, I was too young to appreciate what the hell I was drinking!

    W. Miree

This a continuation of my earlier comment. I have been very fortunate in being able to taste some very old and great wines. Some of these were “Ah Ha!” wines, in that they changed my perspective on wine in general. Others were just great experiences in tasting great old wines. I was privileged to be able to buy (over a two year period, both in the last 10 years) two bottles of 1941 Inglenook Cabernet Sauvignon. This was a 100 point wine by Wine Spectator (in repeated tastings over years), and was rated by WS the number 10 best wine ever made in recorded wine history. The first bottle was definitely in the the 3 best bottles of wine I have ever tasted. The second was not so good, yet was an amazing wine for its age. As you so frequently say, old wines depend on the bottles. I also had the honor of attending a dear friend’s 78th birthday, celebrated at Fleur de Ly in San Francisco, where I had a 1917 Vintage Port that blew all twenty of the attendees away, and I have always put it in the the top three wines I have ever tasted. Perhaps the the greatest “Ah Ha!” wine I ever had was a 10 year old Grand Cru Burgundy that I tasted in the mid 1980’s that forever changed my perspective on Chardonnay based wines. Before this, I was convinced that the best California Chardonnay was always superior to white Burgundy (I have to admit that the runner up was a Mayacamus Chardonnay).

But given all of the above comments, I suppose my final reaction to today’s program is that I loved it, and always love retrospective tastings of great wines.

I repeat myself, but this is definitely one of my favorite episodes of Wine Library TV.

Remarkable! 1988 Ch. La Mission Haut Brion @ $200?? I would not hesitate to purchase. Flip-cam episodes are so much fun! QOTD: Concepcion and I are traveling home (Panama) tomorrow (saturday) afternoon, after more than two weeks traveling. I have not had an old wine in a while.

QOTD: Last year I had an 85 Veuve Clicquot Rose. It was my birth year and also the my parent’s 30th year wedding anniversary. The wine was great, but having the bottle with my parents was better.

    Good episode GV!

  60. May 1, 2009

    John Farrin

QOTD: My daughter, son-in-law and Johnny, who you graciously introduced to the Vayner Nation are arriving later tonight from Jacksonville to spend a week with me here in the SF Bay Area so, naturally, it will be one of the best weekends of the year. Johnny is 6 1/2 months old now and (no bias here) one of the cutest babies I have ever seen. I am pumped!!!!!!!!!!

Had an 82 Mouton last Christmas that I had cellared for 24 years and, Vayniacs, patience brings incredible rewards. Thanks for doing the older stuff Gary.

  61. May 1, 2009

Thanks again Gary for all you are doing for us here in Nash-Vegas. I was at the lunch today, Gary V. is f-ing amazing.

Great show Gary, always nice to see you try world class wines. Thanks for the heads up on the 98 Rieussec. The 74 Mayacamas must have been a real treat. I have some older Togni’s that I hope one day will be as fun to try. QOTD 1986 Chateau Gruard Larouse, still young but great complexity developing.

  63. May 1, 2009

    Matt

Hey, did I call it with the Burt Reynolds eyebrows in the hotel the other day or what? You even mentioned Deliverance yourself today (”squeal for me boy, you’re m-a-a-h piggy now…”): surely it can’t be coincidence?

Another great flipcam episode, and great to see you reviewing these world-class wines that most of us will never have the opportunity to taste. Nice to see the wine equivalent of the G20 all gathered together, playing nicely too. It’s the sort of thing we’d never get to hear about unless you were there to show us. Cheers Gary!

The weekend? I reckon a stroll round the Botanical Gardens is probably on the cards and maybe a spot of lunch at the Opera House over-looking Sydney Harbour. Call if you’re thinking of heading this way sometime — we’ve got a lot of winemakers who would love to shake your hand.

Thanks for giving us a vicarious taste of WCWs (World Class Wines)!

QOTD: ‘61 Beaulieu Vinyards Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon — in 1984 with my lovely wife & a wonderful meal at NYC Four Seasons Fountain Room. We were on a trip from here in Michigan visiting Grandma in Jersey to show off her new grandson.

Warning — Fatherhood will change your whole life … and it’s all worth it.

Mmmm, I can still taste that wine!

  66. May 2, 2009

    dan brien

i think this may be one of my favorite shows in a long time – you appeared to have lowered your guard just a bit – nice to see you loosen up a bit (!). Great reviews – don’t worry about the edit – I think it added to the whole ep.
just because we’re changing the wine world doesn’t mean we can’t look into the old one once in a while, right?

qotd – I have a couple of 1986 St. Emilions (I know, not the best vintage – hopefully some good bottles – they’re from the the year I lived in Paris but i haven’t tried one in almost 20 years) wondering if they are past their prime? Did they even HAVE a prime? Don’t know when to find out.

  67. May 2, 2009

    Flavio

QOTD: I have been quite lucky on the older wine front over the last couple of years, both from my own and my friends’ cellars. The most recent ones:

For my dad’s birthday a few weeks ago we cracked a 1979 La Mission Haut Brion and a 1975 Leoville Las Cases (birth years for my sister and I respectively). The 75 Las Cases, as usual, was phenomenal but the La Mission disappointed us a bit.

Last Wednesday, with friends and some good Argentine steaks, I had a 1979 Las Cases which definitely proved that Las Cases can make good long-lasting wine in any vintage… and a 1981 Lopez Heredia Bosconia Rioja that had an amazing silky Burgundian strawberry vibe (radically different style from today’s Riojas).

  68. May 2, 2009

An 1982 Chappellet Cabernet was rockin it just a few months ago. I also had some phenomenal 1970’s era wines from Monterey Peninsula Winery, Glen Ellen and a sublime 1976 Rieussec about a year ago in CA. Cali wines do age … stop player hatin’ Old World fans.

QOTD: Most epic older wines tasted? ‘77 Fonseca, ‘82 Leoville Las Cases, ‘82 Mouton

  75. May 2, 2009

QOTD: Well the oldest wine I have had was a Riesling Spätlese from 1992. I had that last year and it was really fantastic.

  76. May 2, 2009

    Zino

QOTD: A few years ago I bought a 1953 Lafite at auction. It cost me about £100, potentially a bargain as Parker had twice rated it 100 pts. I took a gamble though as the level was a bit on the low side. I knew it was off the moment the cork was pulled, it stank. It was brown, but having payed so much, I lived in hope that it might still taste good- how wrong I was. As for an epic older wine experience, recently had a 1997 Percarlo – awesome, made up for the Lafite. I’m much more careful at auctions now.

  77. May 2, 2009

    Benj

QOTD: We had 1976 Yquem at Christmas. The oldest and most incredible wine I’ve had by a long way. Just absolutely RIDICULOUS complexity, intensity and balance. It’s going to be a long long long time before I taste anything that amazing again. This weekend I’m revising as my finals start on Tuesday!

  78. May 2, 2009

    Kirk (aka: slave2thevine)

It’s always fun to taste older wines…I had a 1975 Margaux back in september that was still silk and held together until the bottle was empty. About a month later I had a 1986 Conde de Valdemar Rioja Gran Reserva that was still holding strong…and a steal at $25 in the after market…it’s always great when there are some older wines that you can pull out of the cellar and share with people.

What am I doing this weekend. Wishing I were at the L’ete du Vin as I live in Nashville, but I’m probably going to the Centennial Park Craft Fair if weather permits. I’m excited to have you in my town I only wish it was in a vayniac-friendly forum. Love your show. Also I just bought a Reisling and it’s your fault. :-)

  80. May 2, 2009

    Pete

One of the first wines I ever had was a 1975 Lafite Rothchild (in 1994.) A truly amazing experience. Unfortunately, given my inexperience with wine at the time I didn’t truly appreciate how special a great wine was until I tried some many other wines…

    Great wines, great episode.

QOTD: Probably an Arnoux Romanee-Saint-Vivant from the 80’s (forgot the vintage), or an ‘82 Rauzan-Segla. . . . Good times.

  83. May 2, 2009

    Dominus

He winds up and here’s comes the pitch . . . a long fly ball to deep center field, Melky races back and it’s going . . . going . . . gone! A monstrous homerun of a show! That’s what I’m talking about! Though the wines may be unavailable and the QPR is through the roof, it gives us Vayniacs an idea of how a “great” wine “should” taste. Kudos to this great show.

QOTD: Epic wine? I have bottles of Haut-Brion, Cinq Cepages, Ducru, Montelena and Dominus (of course) downstairs and have only had the Dom and CC so I will say the ‘85 Opus One was my last most memorable wine. I guess I should try one of the others soon?

QOTD – Don’t think I have had an old epic wine. Have had some outstanding wines and some old ones, but have not been fortunate to try the epics with age. I am meeting friends for a late lunch and wine today and then to Rathbun’s Steak House for dinner with other friends. I am looking forward to both. Enjoy your tastings.

Being in the business I have been way to fortunate to have many epic wines including Chris Ringland Shiraz, some older Château d’Yquem, a 62 JJ Prum Riesling (WOW), and when I was a Maitre d’ at a restaurant in Jackson Hole Many of my guests would give me glasses of older Bordeaux and Burgundy that I could never afford ?

This episode was better than Saturday morning cartoons on this beautiful Saturday morning. We have not heared the Macho Man Randy Savage reference for a while! QOTD: The last epic older wine was a 1989 Lynch Bages…Thanks Nick;)!

I see the curse of the flip mino and the touch sensitive buttons got you in this one ;) I can’t recall how many times I have zoomed in and didn’t realize it myself with that thing!

QOTD: I have not really had the chance to enjoy an epic old wine. However, I had the pleasure of tasting some epic wines on the Thunder Cruise so that was epic for sure.

QOTD2: Enjoying the weather, doing some editing and being proud of Elisabeth for running the mini marathon downtown Indianapolis. Big ups E-Bear!

Also, happy birthday to your mother!

QOTD: I can’t think of anything epic I’ve had in a while. At least nothing older than 5-7 years. I had a port that was older than me a few years ago, but I couldn’t begin to remember what it was.

Gary, great show, gets me really excited about the ‘89 La Mission which I’m saving for my wedding and is supposed to one up the ‘88……….

QOTD: Probably had it too young, but I had a ‘96 Margaux that seemed like it was already in full stride a few months ago…….it was AMAZING…..(like you said, that bottle at least)

gotta love the older Vino’s that hold up!

just opened a 1986 Pichon Lalande that I have had in cellar for 20 yrs,,,,,,,

    Corked, wotta pisser!

so we drank a 1999 Pommard from Bouchard Fils.

a real Fave though was a 1986 Chianti Riserva from Fontodi at Vinitaly this april at the infamous Bottega di Vini, it was the Sorbo bottling and it was brilliant. Big, stinky, warm and perfumed. WOW. we all Loved it.

Love to see the nerdy GV come out to play every once in a while, awesome show.
QOTD: My only 3 epic wines, all consumed in the last 3 years: a 1978 Vosne-Romanee “Beaux Monts” (amazing) a 1982 Chateau Pontet Canet (excellent) and my biggest letdown, a really tired 1989 Chateau Latour

Great episode, just love vintage wine. In 06 I had a 1966 Louis Martini cabernet. Grapes were also from the Mayacamas. After 40 years, the backwards style and elegance of that wine simply knocked me over. Last year I had a 1974 Simi cabernet that was on a par with the LM but not quite as thunderous.

QOTD: A week ago I had a Heitz, ‘83 or ‘84 I think. It was amazing. Still had loads of color and fruit. You wouldn’t believe it was a quarter of a century old.

This weekend I will be at Miller park watching the Arizona D-Backs lose the series to the MKE, Brewers.

Love the flip cam, it’s fun to see you more in a real life setting than just in the office, even though the office is cozy.

QOTD: I’m a 21 yr old college student, so no money for epic wines (sad face).

Pt. 2: Studying for 5 tests next week, three on monday but also running in a huge 50,000 person 12K race in good old Spokane, WA.

I just had a Clos Des corton 1997 Faviliey. Plus some years ago we were privileged to have a bottle of Heitz Martha’s 1974. It had been abused as in the trunk of a car rolling around but it still showed fantastic youth and deliciousness. Hope someone has a bottle of that for all you Vayneacks.

QOTD: I just had a 1982 Ch. Margaux last night with my friends…. it was amazing not just so because of the bottle but because of the company… it was sad to see the bottle go but it was slightly leaking so I decided to drink it…. its amazing to drink an old bottle with enough age cause we’re all so accustomed to popping the cork and drinking young drink now type of wines… the complexities and nuances that ageing deliveres is unbelievable.

  106. May 2, 2009

    Mike D'Ag

Great show, love listening to your thoughts on the upper end wines!
QOTD: Had a ‘95 Opus One when I got a new job. Not sure if that qualifies as “old.” I was pretty underwhelmed but my expectations were insanely high.

    Happy B-Day Momma V!

  107. May 2, 2009

    Christopher Scoggin

If you hadn’t told us we never would have been able to tell you had had a bit to drink ;) Or not.

Still liking the flipcam episodes but starting to miss Mott. Don’t worry about the ‘edits’ a quick check-in hardly counts in my mind.

QOTD: Only ever had one old wine and it was before I knew much about wine so didn’t appreciate it. It was 15-20 years old red and I remember that as they where pulling the cork it crumbled and fell into the bottle so it may have been off to start. All I can remember from taste is that it was very much NOT a tasty wine. It tasted very ‘dark’ and not pleasent to my pallet at that time (although I still prefer tasty wines to ‘challenging’ ones).

Speaking of vintage wine, has anyone had the 1995 Chilean cabernet that WL is selling – Domaine Paul Bruno? I bought one but haven’t popped it yet. The price was right at $18.

Gary, it’s always great to see you review some old wines. I’d be interested in seeing a show where you do a vertical, or at least 3-5 examples of the same wine but in different years. (and forgive me if you have already done this)

Happy birthday to your mom. I am just in the process of opening some of my older wines over the next 3-4 weeks and the Mayacamas 1976 and 1978 are in the mix. I had the 1974 in 1986 from my tasting notes I thought there was a ton of eucalyptus in it almost a Heitz Martha’s vineyard. My best bottles were the Latour and Cheval Blanc from my birth year 1947. Amazing wines and I would have rated each 100. No flaws at all. I have the 1988 Rieussec bought in 1990 for $24 so at that price it should still be good. Hey Nico if you are reading further. Table of big German guy at the wine cruise.

yeah, but That cali cab is from when the wines were not picked so over-ripe.. look at the abv…
I am not so sure that they would age like that now.

Wonderful show Gary! Call me bougie, but I really love these top-dollar vino shows. Being in France, I rarely ever find the wines you taste, so I might as well watch you drinking the real classy stuff.

QOTD: epic wine… I’d have to say this little 8 euro play I bought in a convenience store and drank with some brie and baguette in front of notre dame with a bunch of american friends who were over last summer (tourists represent!) I remember it as having this de-LISH clove/orange combination, like some old-tyme chrismas spirit in my mouth… plus epic friends and epic vistas; that night worked out ok.

Straying from wine, I just bought some KILLER spring-pickings Dao Reng green tea (was picked a week and a half ago.) The wet-sock flavor I got off the first steeping made me realize how gunked up with lime my water-heater had gotten from the hard tap water I used, so I cleaned it up and JUST made the leap to using mineral water for my tea! And oh my god, night and day, best cuppa tea I’ve had in a long, long time; subtle, sweet grassy notes, like those sugarflowers certain grasses have (they have a real name, I just can’t find it.)

great episode love learning about older wines

QOTD: i have not really had any epic older wines, being a poor college student really hinders me from from getting one but i cant wait to be able to have one

QOTD2: this weekend i am serving this country in the AIR FORCE Reserves.

    BobbyTiger

I just drank a wine that was made on Tuesday. It was good.

Actually, I choose not to buy “epic” wines, as I really don’t have the ability to taste the difference, with that, say……..of a $20.00 bottle of wine.
So, given the price point, I stick with something within my financial range, that, (to me), delivers good taste.

Have a good time in Nashville……and thank for being U.

Haven’t seen many shows, but I think the 93+ and the 94 were the highest ratings I’ve heard. what is the highest Gary has rated a wine on the show?

QOTD: I generally hate Chards, but the only Kistler Chard I had (this was in the early 2000’s, so think it was a late 90’s vintage) was the most epic experience. Perfect wine, finish that ran a full minute. Also I was at Pine Ridge after Gary Andrus sold the place and they opened their library. Had everything they were pouring that day, joined the club and have no intention of drifting away. I mean unless Leucadia really donks the place up.

  119. May 2, 2009

    Jeff S.

QOTD: I haven’t had many EPIC wines, but I will share that because of your show last week I’ve been trying a lot of Malbecs. Big ups to you, Gary, for expanding my palate.

    mrpat56

great episode, I love the older vintages & great wine episodes. Value wines are good, but occasional GREATS make my day. Keep it up.

QOTD– 1974 Heitz Marthas Vineyard. A wine I will never forget. I have drank lots of french and Napa greats— ‘82,’85,’86,’90,95, ‘00—moutons, lafite, haut-brion, la conseillante and more— but the Heitz is the stand out.

  121. May 2, 2009

    Steve Spielmann

I haven’t had a truly epic older wine lately. Two good ones, though – both SCM Calicabs – Ridge 1992 Santa Cruz Mountains and Klein Vineyards 1990 (this vineyard was purchased by Mt. Eden and now goes into their wine). Be happy to drink either of those again, but no more in the cellar, alas.

  122. May 2, 2009

    Harry

Great show, thanks for bringing us along.
Last epic wine was a 1991 Shafer Hillside Select over the summer sitting together with John Shafer as he told stories of moving out to Napa in the 60s. True honor, and the wide was amazing, obviously.

  123. May 2, 2009

Hey Gary, First of all I’m 19 years old. But I still love the show. even though I have not tasted a lot of wines in my day you make the show hilarious either way. Keep up the great work, and the movie bottle shock is a awesome movie. I recommend it to everyone.

    Thanks,

awesome episode, it’s not common for me to see such old, classic (and expensive) wines. Looking forward to those upcoming guests

QOTD: The most recent one i can remember a 1985 Bordeaux back in 2006, but for the life of me i can’t remember. it was a friends 21st birthday and his dad, a big wine guy, brought out his birthday case. All I know that it was delish.

Excellent show. Always great to see how the classic wines are holding up. You are a lucky man.

QOTD: I just opened a 1998 (over 10 years, so I thought it counted) Artesa Pinot Noir that is still screaming blackberry. What a great wine.

Great show GV, you did seem tipsy :)

QOTD- Latour 86, bought primeur by a friend’s father in 87. Great souvenir. Cheval Blanc 95 and Yquem 95, Dom Perignon oenotheque 84

QOTD2 – Golf, got sunburnt in Jersey ! can you imagine that ?

  129. May 3, 2009

    apj_bobswineguy

1993 Dom Perignon Oenotheque! Really amazing! Transcends price.
1999 & 2001 Screaming Eagle. But….does NOT transcend price. Can’t get over the price. They were also amazing wines (esp the 2001, sorry, i know the 99 is more highly rated).
Thanks to our guests who let me partake.

  130. May 3, 2009

    apj_bobswineguy

What a great life! What an incredible tasting! The wines & the who’s who in attendance!

I have a btl of 1982 Mayacamus stashed. Not positive of the provenance. But, I want to give it a whirl now.
That 1988 La Mission had deep color. Crazy deep color. Is that possible for a 21 year old wine?
Great way to finish the week.

Loved the episode. Thanks for taking the time to share some EPIC wines with us.

QOTD: 1995 Beaulieu Vineyard, Private Reserve Cab Sauv. Maybe not epic in the true sense of the word, but an epic for me.

  132. May 3, 2009

Thanks for the show Gary, do you think you can give us tasting scores/notes on all the other wines that you had over lunch, I know most of us cant drink them everyday, but everyone loves a bit of wine porn from time to time!

QOTD: 1982 Pichon Longueville-Lalande, the most multi layered, complex wine I have ever tasted, the wine that really made me understand great Bordeaux.

  133. May 3, 2009

    james hill

last epic wine… 1996 pontet canet,.375mls. 94+ points. the 750mls needs years to be ready.after that i bought a wine cellar and started buying good to excellent vintages of bordeaux for long storage. previously, a bottle of farella park terrace reserve 2003. bought at a charity auction in napa and served at a tasting at a local retailer who annually bids for as much as he can for the store and his own cellar. probobly very little of this available anywhere at $133… 95+.

  134. May 3, 2009

    Chalz

Last epic was 61 lafitte Rothchild 1/2 bottle…all that and then some!! My birth year, have 1 more bottle. My QOTD to you.. when do I open theis last one??

  135. May 3, 2009

    Hi Gary,
Excellent Ep. QOTD: Reading over my last 300 or so TN’s, I guess this is one time where I don’t have a quick answer. Most everything we drink is within 10 years old, so I wouldn’t qualify any as old and epic. Later this year for our anniversary we’ll probably drink a ‘91 Dominus. Otherwise the last epic bottle I had was an ‘89 Pegau CDP. Cheers, CK

  136. May 3, 2009

    jigger

QOTD: No popularly recognized big hitters. Had a great Sea Smoke and a 2002 Mayacamas Mt Veeder Merlot (I think I got that right) within last couple of years that I really enjoyed.

Classic GV feel to the show. Appreciate the fact that after 600+ you can cycle back into “honeymoon” mode with the WLTV audience. The new energy comes right through the episode and into the GVnation. Keep it up. Peace.

  137. May 3, 2009

    Murso

I love Haut Brion. I remember that 88,89,90 string of vintages (in Bordeaux). They raved em’ all up, then, subsequently, everyone in the press, down to the vintage charts seemingly blew off the 88, as though it wasn’t that great after all. Man those wines were great, from the classified growths, down to modest little wines like Beaumont, which was downright cheap! Real affordable, and I drank a bunch of that for a few years.

Mayacamas IS really ageable, and they had a classic style, in which their alcohol was kept down to a Bordeaux-like 12%. In 2002 a friend and I had a ‘79, and I recall it had that minty note overtone, and a dusty aura that made the steaks feel really juicy.

A local distributor sold out some years back, and the President sold lots out of his cellar to industry guys. My distributor got our hands on maybe a hundred bottles of Bordeaux, dating through the seventies. Lots of Fourtet, and other St. Emilions, as well as Margauxs, and St. Estephes. I bought 8 bottles, and poured most of them at a wine bar for industry peeps, and thier customers. Highly informative to help people know what happend to the fruit after 25-30 years, cause you often get more cranberry, olive, and phenolic components than fruit scents and flavor.

Would appreciate hearing the grape varieties of the wines, eg. Haut Brion: cab, merlot, cab franc.
I haven’t had any epics. We had a 1982 “Charles Krug Cabernet we got for $5.00 a bottle.
    You have a great job!

‘82 Chave but that was almost a year ago…

Had a bottle of 1970 Hermitage in January. The label didn’t even say who the producer was and the wine was phenominal.

Had a bottle of 1976 Paul Jaboulet Cote-Rotie in February and it knocked my socks off. Have another bottle of that — can’t wait to open it.

Can I just say that I really miss when the show sign off was

“You, with a little bit of me, we’re changing the wine world, whether they like it or not”

since when did we start caring what the wine world thought?

Great show! Love the classics, especially since the Napa Cab stole the show! QOTD: Hmmm, unfortunately have not had the opportunity to try too many classics. I’d go with the 99 Sebastiani Cherry Block Cabernet.

QOTD – 1976 H. Josef Fries Noviander Honigberg Riesling Auslese
had at the forum Rieslingfest in March. The oldest wine i’ve had, and it rocked the house – it was my WOTN. Golden honey color, very weighty but fresh and vibrant – it did not show its age.

    Gary,

LOVED the show, Flip Cameras are awesome (I have one too)! Thanks for letting us experience the wow factor w/ you!

I have a bottle of 1979 Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon that I plan to open this weekend to celebrate Mother’s Day. Also, I have family coming into town to celebrate my son’s 1st birthday (and I’m sure they will LOVE the fact I’m opening something from my cellar).

The vintage wine I had recently was a 2000 Silverado Cabernet Sauvignon which paired perfectly with a ribeye steak.

    Keep up the AWESOME work!

Had a good weekend – spent yesterday in the city. Went to the Intrepid Museum – which was pretty cool. Then met up with a few friends at Blue Ribbon Wine bar. Great time there (glad you did some shows there to inspire our visit).

    Cheers!

Sweet episode, that lunch had to be pretty amazing with all those spectacular wines.

QOTD – I have not really had many older wines. I did have a busy weekend selecting my wedding location in Long Island. We ended up going with Bedell Cellars which should be a great time.

Now THIS is what I’m talkin about! Good show GV… would love to see more of these style shows… Perhaps with older vintage retrospectives like 82 Bord’s, or mid 90’s Aussies. Or classic Barolo vintages.. PLEASE try and tape some of these!

Good to see you DRINK some wine, even if you did go spit the Mayacamas (boo).

Tasted a sip of an end of a bottle of 83 chateau Margaux. It was exquisite. Had a whole bottle of with a friend who has a great collection of an Échezaux 1970. That was quite spectacular as well. That was 2 years ago, though and i don’t remember the producer.

Thanks for another great episode Gary! it’s painful to watch you spit those awesome wines out…
qotd: 1995 Giuseppe Quintarelli Rosso Ca’ Del Merlo this past Friday. Awesomeness!

I’ve never had what one would amount to an Epic wine.

    Maybe one day.

    Thanks for the Flip show.

QOTD: I think a 2003 CDP is the oldest wine I’ve had, but it was very good. I’m catching this on Monday but over the weekend I went out to celebrate my amazing girlfriend graduating college and went to a baseball game.

Thanks for a great road trip episode! How fortunate you are to taste such extraordinary wines!! Can’t wait for the other eps on the road! Keep up the 411!

Hope your mom has a great bday!! Had a great weekend – got out to the barn and rode my horses, very humbling experience to see all that power and know you can have control or at least try to!!

QOTD: 2000 Nebbiolo from Prunotto if that can counts?! It was SUPERB!!!

  168. May 4, 2009

    dcrob

    Happy B-day Mama vaynerchuk!!

QOTD: 79 Jordan Cab (is that epic?). Brown, chalky, no-fruit.. no-flavor for that matter.. suk’d, made me sad.

Gary, love the flip episodes and LOVE the older vintage episodes so this one is a double whammy!
Would love to see you do more older Bordeaux or even a vertical of something soon.

“qotd” had an ‘83 Lafite-Rothschild with my gf’s dad last weekend, I think I love him even more.

  174. May 4, 2009

    Rob Vrabel

QOTD – None… I’m starting to keep a collection though so later in life I’ll have some old wines to try!

    AMM3RD

1982 Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux &
    1989 Domaine Rossignol Trapet Latricières-Chambertin.

I had them both on the same night, before my brother’s wedding. Awesome!

The Pavillon was puchased in France in the mid-80’s & the Chambertin was purchased recently at Sotheby’s.

Great old wine really takes you places…AMM

GV, nice job hope you got to knock back a few more thunderstorms downstairs…what did you buy at the auction?

PS. You hesitated with excitement when you saw the rack of rosé at Cafe Notte the other day…how about a rosé show?

QOTD: Last labor Day a 1961 Petrus Pomerol that was given to me by a business partner…it was past its prime but still wine, highly reductive, a bit oxidized but about 15 minutes after it was decanted, something quite ethereal of earth and fruit showed through on both the nose and on the palate…and then 10 minutes later it was gone, and what was left went downhill fast. Have never had anything else in this class or age so I have nothing to really compare it to. We followed it with a 2003 Concha Y Toro Don Melchor. Viva Chile!

    Jean-Sebastien Rivard

Hi Gary, I love to see episodes with older vintages. In the past month, I had the chance to taste a few old ones, but the best were the Cheval Blanc 1975 and the Pontet-Canet 1971, both spectacular wines. Château Gloria 1975 was also very good, better than the 1976 and 1978 Leoville Las-Cases.

On the sweet side, the Château Coutet 1981 and 1983, along with the Tour Blanche 1976 were out of sugar but still had very good lenght.

Keep up the amazing work and bonjour from Montreal.

1986 Beringer Private Reserve Cabernet. Was the Spectators Wine if the year in 1990. They nailed it. Still soooo alive. Like drinking chocolate covered coffee beans! Gave it 96 points in my head.

A couple of weeks ago I would have had absolutely no answer to the QOTD, but just recently, I had the chance to taste the 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2005 Chatueau Montelena Estate cabs. Of the older three, the ‘01 was my favorite. But because my palate is more used to young, tannic, wines, I thought the ‘05 showed the best.

QOTD 1982 Pichon Lalande – ooooh – Delicious ummmmm!!

    Hi Gary

Long time lurker coming into the light!

Great episode — love the Ted Diabiase style laugh in respect of the aging of California cabs.

You truly are changing the wine world and all for the better!

    Gary,

I’m not a wine fan at all, in fact until I saw your videos I thought all self-proclaimed ‘wine-aficionados’ were complete tools, and the movie Sideways was the most painful two hours of my life.

BUT: I really enjoy some of the factors that go into Wine Library TV. The thing that stood out to me today was that the last show I watched you were spending $80 on average wine from your hotel mini-bar and today you were reviewing $100-$200 bottles of wine that you got for free. Overall I think it’s rad that you hit the whole spectrum. Keep up the good work.

  185. May 4, 2009

    Sasha M.

love those wine tasting/auctions. wish I could do more… someday.

QOTD: Château L’Évangile “Pomerol” 1961..(for my mom’s birthday) Incredible and wished my palate was more developed at the time..but i really enjoyed it and not because of the label..

  186. May 4, 2009

    Sean

Thanks for another GREAT flip show. Keep them coming.

QOTD: Unfortunately, I have not had the privilege to drink anything earlier than a wine from the late 1990’s :-(

    Gary,

The close-ups with the Flip cam – full screen expansion – look like a dental exam. Back off about 2 feet….. Still luv ya – still watching.

Little late on my comment…sorry Gary will you forgive me?? Happy birthday to your moms!!

I have to say it hurt watching you pour a 1988 Chateau La Mission Haut Brion down the bathroom sink but I guess I will get over it :-)

so fun. keeping it real. Don’t do this every day, get back to mott and some quality video as well as your always quality content.
ha, could tell you had some wine prior. haha.

Tanin is a sensation, not a taste. right?

Friday I am off to Burgundy valley and Rhone valley… then I can be a wine nerd! woohoo!

Good show and thanks for sharing these vintages I will probably never have the opportunity to try but love to hear of the experience.

QOTD – a 1986 Colheita Port. Love It!!!

  192. May 4, 2009

    Don

Two nice cork throws in a row, great work! Gary I’m a huge fan of the flipcam episodes. Even though you don’t normally edit, I thought it was really cool that you gave everyone the inside look at the tasting and previewed the wines before you recorded the rest of the episode.

  193. May 4, 2009

    Don

QOTD: I went to the NASCAR race in Richmond. Gary, you would have been proud of me, I drank wine while tailgating at the NASCAR race. Revolutionary, I am also changing the wine world. Had a 2007 Oyster Bay Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand and I was disappointed in the effort, it was quite flabby. I was drinking it out of a yellow plastic cup though!

  194. May 5, 2009

    veronica

nice show! how can you spit a $300 wine?? at least you poured the rest back into the bottle :c)

  195. May 5, 2009

great show GV! i am digging the flipcam and i appreciate you teaching us about these rarer wines–unfortunately i have not had any recently.

Mayacamas the myth the legend, still needs to forgotten about for atleast ten years before even being considered.

QOTD Graham 1963 Vintage Port. Wow…

Can’t really think of any great older vintaes I have had, let alone older, I did have a leroy 2002 Pinot for dinner couple months ago and that was really tasty, I had a 2000 Aramoni? Italian Meritage Don’t really remember it. AHH I had the Dom Perignon 1995! that was good. and a memorable night too

  199. May 6, 2009

    agoodman

All that by the time your done with lunch? What was for dinner?
QOTD: 66 Haut Brion…what can I say but WOW

    Chippewamike

Late to this one. . .

QOTD: No good old vintages yet. . . had a 1993 Duckhorn recently, was past its prime.

As to the weekend, ran my first marathon in Cincinnati! Did great. Had a great time with the Team in Training program. . . raised some money for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Celebrated with a nice ChatDuPap! :)

    WOAH WOAH woah…

Michael Jackson is still crazy hot… just for a different reason haha. but come on, billie jean? greatest song EVER!

if only i had a thousand bucks to drop to go see him in concert in london…

alright QOD: haven’t had one… to my knowledge. girlfriends dad is a wine guy though so maybe I have and just didn’t know.

  202. May 7, 2009

    my2cents

Ok just gotta say Michael Jackson is a freakshow nowadays. Can’t imagin him doing anything live that would be worth a dime to see. Back in the day though he was the king.

I remember having Delinger pinots in the mid 80’s that I really liked. But have not had much in the way of “older” wine to speak of.

Another fun episode, I wouldn’t really call it “edited” since you didn’t remove anything.

Can’t wait to see the next few filpisodes. Thanks for bringing it home Gary!

  203. May 7, 2009

I’m a fan of the flip cam episodes.. but I think sometimes you it would be good to sit a tiny bit further away from the camera to help it focus.

QOTD – I would have to say the first wine that really got me into serious wine… 2000 Yvonnick Debray Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

  204. May 7, 2009

    Seattle Zin Guy

Hey Gary, I know you didn’t taste them on the show but I’m curious which particular Pinots you got to try from Martinelli and Williams Selyem and what you thought of them (you flashed the bottles so quickly I couldn’t make out what vineyards they were).

QOTD: Over the last year I’ve been lucky enough to be over when my dad has opened up a 1988 Château Mouton Rothschild, a 1988 Chateau Margaux, a 1989 Leonetti Cellar Cabernet, and a couple bottles of 1995 Delille Chaleur Estate (Red). In my opinion the 2 Washington wines kicked the snot out of both first growth Bordeauxs. The Mouton Rothschile was earthy and interesting, but I’ve had $30 bottles that I enjoyed more so unfortunately it was a little disappointing. The Margaux was smooth and tasty, but a little lighter than I would have expected. The Leonetti and Delille Chaleur Estates were some of the silkiest most well balanced cabs I’ve come across, beautiful wines…didn’t get to taste them side by side but I’d say top honors probably go to the Leonetti.

  205. May 7, 2009

    yowens

cool show, so many crazy good wines. QOTD1: This is a HUGE, HUGE shout out to Ed from the ThunderCruise- so many old great wines…my fav was the early 80’s Caymus Special Select; but their was 20yo Mondavi, insignia, Grange, Dominus….thank you again Ed for sharing your very special wines with us, we loved them and loved that you shared their enjoyment with us. Here’s to ThunderCruise 2010!!!!

Very cool background on the mayacamus, and loved the neat older stuff.

Working for a wine and spirits wholesaler in Nashville (Lipman Brothers), I have been to L’ete du Vin on many occasions. Very cool of you to be in Nashvegas. Sorry I missed you. Keep up the great work!

    Jason S.

QOTD: I had a ‘75 Chateau Palmer, but it was dead unfortunately :(

Cool show GV – I like hearing about older wines, not something everyone gets to do all the time since cellar space is so limited.

  209. May 17, 2009

    Dan-o

    Interesting show!
Glad you showed a 1988 Bordeaux – that is my anniversary year and I try to collect those wines for special occasions. Looks like an interesting event you attended as well.

QOTD – 1981 Chateau Palmer that was oxidized – sad day. 1988 Marchesi di Barolo that was fantastic. 1988 Domaine du Vieux Telegraphe that was very good.

  210. May 19, 2009

    PSPatrick

QOTD: I had a 1995 Château La Nerthe with family lately that rocked the house, and a 1995 Carruades de Lafite with my fiancée that was pretty disappointing.

Great show and awesome classic wines to taste.
