    Meh.

QOTD: Who has time to apologize?

sorry the wines were bad, but I thought it was a great episode. I like these quick-round episodes where you review 3-4 wines in 10 mins. So let me get it right… : the wines that are widely available are rubbish wines…. ? lovely… keep it up GV, the UK salutes you matey!

I wonder if the winemaker even likes either of those last two?

No need to apologize Gary, every show you do provides knowledge, so even though none of the wines brought thunder today at least everyone watching will know to stay away :)

QOTD – I was walking behind my friend today and stepped on the back of her flipflop >_<

WIDELY AVAILIBLE? Not at Wine Library. Thank Zeus for that.
Good show anyway. Trying new wines gets old when you run into this stuff at an even higher bone point.

your squirming and disgust at the wines made me make terrible faces when i was watching. you should do an episode on faulted wines, ones with lactic acid or mercaptans, that would be fun!

QOTD: i had to apologize to all the people i told to watch your show. haha. classic.

Great Brutally honest ep Gary…keep bringing the thunder man!!!

QOTD….Last time I apologized was to my buddy last Friday night after he splurged $300 each for two bottles of Jasper Hill 1995 Heathcote Shiraz (I told him not to!!!)…. I drink one bottle on my own…then chucked it up….I think I ate a dodgy oyster or something earlier…..oops

Gary, you called Soave a grape in this episode. I’m sure it was just a slip of the tongue, but Soave is made up of mainly Garganega (at least 70%) and may have Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco, and/or Trebbiano in there. Thanks for putting out this episode and putting that last, obviously horrible wine in your mouth so you could review it. I might not have. I also have a comment that’s more about yesterday’s episode, but I’m writing it here so you’ll read it. I know you want to be popular on Amazon, but I don’t like your promotion of a business that tends to ruin local economies, without which our wonderful form of capitalism would probably collapse or degrade to an unrecognizable state. I don’t want to sound like I’m down on you because I appreciate that you do this show and I enjoy it. Thank you for so many great episodes.

I apologized today for spilling Prosecco. I didn’t have to; it spilled out on its own after I opened the bottle, probably because it was so warm.

but the Pats don’t! QOTD: I apologize all the time. I make lots of mistakes. Gary – Loved that episode! You should consider not revealing your scores verbally but let the Vayniacs guess your score based on your facial expression – which are priceless. I was guessing that second wine was going to be in the 60’s before you even spoke!

  18. May 14, 2009

    Scott EJ

Funny how the last two made you appreciate the 1st meh wine. I don’t mind learning from bad wines, as long as it doesn’t cost me too much. Then it just pisses me off.

QOTD: Not sure, but I can guarantee it was to my wife.

(BTW – Thanks for reading a comment of mine. Sipping a Rose’ right now.)

This episode just confirmed that widely available usually does not equal quality, which I already knew (with some exceptions). Thanks for the effort Gary!

QOTD I had to apologize that my son sickened at least 3 other kids (so far) on the street this past week with a nasty virus. Of course he was contagious before I knew he was sick!

Nice tight show. I remember about 300 or so shows ago you said you would drink a wine even if it was terrible because it would teach you something. I’m thinking that statement would not apply with these back to back plonks. No way you drank any more of those.

QOTD – I used to apologize to my wife pretty much on a daily basis but have since learned to say ‘Can I get you some more wine?’ instead. It never fails.

Hey Gary, Since the wines in this episode were sooo bad and not worth talking about, I want to thank you for bringing Charles Smith and K Vintners to my attention. I bought some of the 06 Morrison Lane and Ovide at the Library last fall and have fallen in love with them. That my friend was your best episode. These wines are seriously good. Look for Spectator to feel the same way in an upcoming issue. You were way ahead on this one. Thanks for the heads up!

It’s good to know that the one that you said was the most available is the best of the bunch. I frequently tend to associate mass distribution with lack of complexity, & at least for one wine that wasn’t entirely the case.

QOTD: Probably the last time I was late for a group meeting.

    1. Glad you are back doing what I appreciate the most – trying and evaluating wines.

    2. I almost want to say sorry for the losers, but I am grateful for the evaluation.

I like how this episode you did wines that most people can find, even though they were crap. Im hoping you’ll do a red version of this episode tomorrow/soon? Its tough finding the wines you have on your show all the way down here in Central Florida. Please try the Silvertop Shiraz. Its $7.00 for a bottle and an excellent Argentine shiraz.

QOTD: Apologized to my manager for arguing with a customer about religion. I normally try not to argue with people on the matter but I cant stand self righteous people who judge me for not having the same beliefs.

GV…another outstanding idea for a show. Another wine in this genre you may want ot consider is Lorentz Pinot Gris. I liked it a few years back at 9 bones, unlike it’s current tag of !5. At any rate, its a fairly ubiquitous decent bottle of juice.

QOTD…after not checking my daughters homework. She there was nothing assigned yesterday. The teacher called my wife today complaining about homework not being completed…oops!! Guess who had to apologize?

  37. May 14, 2009

Gary — 2 back to back terrible wines, I can see why they hurt your feelings. I will make sure to steer clear!!! Still appreciate the episode even though the wines were a disaster.

  38. May 14, 2009

    Yvettew

You gotta take the good with the bad. The bad makes you appreciate the good better, so even though they weren’t great wines, it still teaches a lesson – therefore, awesome show!!

this was a good idea for an episode, too bad the wines didn’t show well, but i often find chain stores selection of interesting imported wines like soave and vouvray lacking.

qotd: somewhat fittingly i think the last thing i apologized for was a wine i helped a friend pick out that wasn’t good. she wanted a cheap chardonnay, and i did my best given the options as presented.

  42. May 14, 2009

    urbwes

Gary, I was REALLY hoping you would read my comment today. Of course the likelihood of that is slim so I will raise it again. You mentioned a juice flavor in the Katie Lee Joel episode. Was that “compote” you were referring to? It’s a totally eastern european/Ukraine thing and I want to know if I was right (if I “crushed it”). I NEED TO KNOW.
    Your loyal and devoted fan,

Funny thing, I was looking at the B&G Vouvray today at Publix. I was thinking of getting it so that I could check off another grape on my list for the Wine Century Club. Everything I drink doesn’t have to be 90+ pointers, right?

  46. May 15, 2009

    John Rogers

Low scores and bad wines but that’s what it is ,also a short episode to boot. It does bring up an issue I have with wine scores. Does an 89 score on two wines make a difference when one is 10 dollars and the other is 50? I mean other than the price

QOTD: About three months ago said something trying to be funny.

  47. May 15, 2009

    Kevin the Sooner

Alright Gary! Maybe I can find one of those in Oklahoma…hmm…or maybe just the Vouvray…maybe…oh well…

Good show! Too bad the wines didn’t crush it!

QOTD: I thought love means never having to say your sorry. What, that isn’t true? gotta go and apologize to my wife.

Just remember Gary every bad wine you drink saves us from the same mistake. Thanks again.

  49. May 15, 2009

    Harry

Hey, I know its no fun to speak the truth, but we appreciate you for it. Solid show, and its almost as important to know what to avoid as it is to seek out. I’ve had to say sorry often, its all good as long as you learn from the mistakes.

good show…in an odd way i enjoy when you give wines a pass…you explain the odd things that we might taste in a wine that is not of the ordinary, like peach, pear, etc…and you give us things like canned pea juice…love it…

QOFTD: tonight at work, in the kitchen, Journey “dont stop believin” was on the radio and i was quietly singing along…until the “dont stop belieeeevin..hold on to that feelaaaayyyyyyeeeeeinnn” part, got a bit loud, turned around and everyone was staring at me…humbly said I’m sorry….i think it got awkward for everyone….

  52. May 15, 2009

Don’t apologize when you review bad wines: that’s all part of the wine world.
Helping give viewers hints on what to avoid is as valuable as pointing them towards really good wines.
    Enjoyed the episode!

    Gary,

Two nights ago, my wife and I tried a bottle of 2007 Anakena Single Vineyard Pinot Noir from Chile. Many South American wines are terrific, but I had to apologize to her for buying this one. I have never tasted Windex, but I think that would come pretty close to the flavor profile of this pinot noir. It was crap by itself, and even worse with pork roast!

Hey Gary! You don’t have to apologize if the wine sucks. It ain’t your fault. ;-)

Gary, I agree with the others, don’t apologize because even if the wines suck your descriptions are very entertaining. I did chuckle though when “not available” flashed on the screen on a show with wines that are “widely available” Thanks for all your hard work. Much Love..

While watching this episode I did take the time to search my local wine and spirits store webpage (www.pawineandspirits.com) for all three wines shown. I am afraid to say that none of them are sold there. I live in PA(Steelers and Pens!)and have a hard time finding many many wines shown. I know their webpage is not very useful some times so next time I am in the actual store I will double check, but my hopes are low.

Come on, Gary…”Soave is a grape that gets overlooked”, not crushing it on the wine knowledge there are you?
Made up for it partially with the face you made for wine no. 3…
But seriously, how many people are watching this, and only one other comment mentioning the existence of the lovely Garganega grape variety… It boggles thee mind.

  63. May 15, 2009

    Pizza Vino Joe

I thought you must have been in a good mood. I have had much experience with B&G Vouvray. Personally, I would not have gone much over 82 points and was shocked that you went that high since it really lacks acid. You made up for it on ther other two. Santi Soave and Santi Pinot Grigio separated at birth Have you ever seen them in the same room at the same time? Hmmmmm.

I apologize to my waistline as I didn’t work out today.

  64. May 15, 2009

    Zach

So let me try and understand this…..

The theme of the show is wines that are widely available but the title graphic that comes up for each wine says “unavailable”. Does that make any sense?

Looking forward to the next show.

Clearly you focus on palette descriptors and taste sensations and not the viticulture side. It would be more educational if you did the homework and talked more about the winemakers, grapes and geography. Just sayin, because I love your show.

People overuse the sorry word. Stick to your guns. I love PBR, but only cause it’s cheap and is close to water. Put a lemon in it, or mix it with 1/2 grapefruit juice and you have a drink.

To my wife once a week for some wrong I have committed. Never always sure of what it is. Why apologize. You didn’t make these wines. Guess this confirms, don’t buy wine at the grocery store.

The bad wine episodes have their own value in highlighting wines to run away from. I find it interesting that, although it’s not always easy to get a consensus on what is a good wine, I find that it’s easier for a group to pick out a wine they all don’t like.

QOTD: Yesterday, for not getting in touch with a good friend as quickly as I should have when I moved back to his ‘hood.

QOTD: I apologize for my comment.

  81. May 15, 2009

    jigger

    QOTD: Interrupting someone (sound familiar).

The two “dogs” in this episode illustrate one of the problems with individuals expanding their palate (or even introducing themselves to wine at the store). They want to try a bottle or new varietal, low cost, and as this ep demonstrated, if the store only carries a few, the store is likely just looking for representation, not necessarily having made any determination of quality of any kind.

Side Note: Not having seen any soave grapes on the vine I picture them hanging there wearing tiny bandanas, ripped jeans that fit so tight they appear to be airbrushed on with cowboy boots, all of them answering to the name “rico”

    Peace

  82. May 15, 2009

Thought for a minute you might talk me into trying a Soave, but not after that debacle. I do love the Loire Valley – reds, whites and the sparklers are some of the best values out there. Fortunately for me, Phillipe carries more than just B&G

Frankly, I’m surprised the B&G made it into the mid-eighties. If I know the wine you are reviewing, I always try to guess what your score will be. I had you at about 80 on that one. I don’t know the other 2 wines, so no guess.

QOTD: 20 minutes ago. I had to apologize to the mail man when my dog almost came through to screen door on him!

I was late to work today. you seemed more embarassed than i did though, and at least I didnt have poopy citrus pea juice in my mouth when I showed up.

Who was the cute girl in the green shirt and Mets hat that walked by at 8min in? Can you have her on the show sometime? Thanks for your honesty on these wines. haha

QOTD: Who can keep track- everytime my wife walks in the room, yells from the upstairs or calls on the phone- I am apologizing for something.

  94. May 15, 2009

Oh well Gary. I wouldn’t be too disappointed. Not every wine is going to be a winner. I’m sure all of us have had those “what the…?” experiences with wine that we thought would be better, or heard good things about and were left scratching our heads and rinsing our mouths.

QOTD: The last thing I apologized for was not getting a proof sheet to Carla for a huge job she did recently. She needed to get some images out, and I was a bit behind. Oops. Sorry.

Gary, please do a show on Soave. Pra, Pieropan, Suavia, Tamellini, Gini, Inama, Ca´Rugate all make great wines. Soave has suffered a bad reputation for too long. If you never tasted these wines, i guarantee you will be amazed. Do Soave a favor, it deserves it!

Dude, bum luck with those 3 wines…cant win em all :-( Great job anyway!!

QOTD: probably apologized to my wife for teasing the hell out of her…I do that to much :-)

I actually liked the fact you panned the wines. It saves me from making the same mistake and then having to APOLOGIZE to my wife for buying crap wines. It’s too bad about the Soave. A good one is a rare treat.

by the way, do another show with easy to find wines. try to find some that dont make you feel sorry. thats the best way to apologize.

Many winemakers need to pay attention out there – cuz I have had everyone of these and thought the same thing – seeking out QPR wines is getting difficult and yes all of these are easily available in many liquor stores around me.

QOTD: I gave my boyfriend the wrong directions but got him the correct ones in time before he left!

Soave is not a grape Gary! The grape is Garganega

So, I’m still making my way through the archives (dang, that’s a lot of material!), so I apologize if this question has been asked:

Why is it that certain styles of wine routinely get higher scores than others? For example, every year a few Bordeaux wines will get 95-point and higher scores, even in off-vintage year. You can get a 95-point dessert wine at your local shop without even looking hard or breaking the bank. But the highest score in the entire WS database for Chianti is 96, and nothing over 92 points since 2001.

Shouldn’t each style of wine be evaluated according to the type, meaning you’d expect as many top-scored efforts in one style as another?

I dunno, just something I’ve always found misleading about wine scores.

Oh, and QOTD: Too many to count. Most recent was forgetting some at work just seconds ago. I apologize a lot, even if I don’t need to. Why not? It makes the other guy happy.

The B&G as an aperitif…I agree.
My last big apology was to my wife for spending over $1200 for orders from Wine Library! I did purchase way, way excellent wine though, and enjoyed every sip!
    Thanks, Gary!!

  108. May 15, 2009

    Dominus

Yes, laid back Friday would have been great today.

Maybe it’s me but almost any wine under 10 bones is going to stink to high heaven, especially any SOAVE. I have yet to try one that resembles wine.

As other posters have chimed in “widely available”? Not. Doesn’t matter anyway since they were a major PAZZZZZZZ.

QOTD: Geez, I have to apologize all the time for buying so much wine from WL. Sad, but true.

    Gary,

My wife says watch how your palate expands when you start tasting baby food.

Can’t wait for the new descriptions.

All of us cringed at the “drinking canned pea juice.”

It might be worth the buy for a “I dare you to taste it” evening with friends.

    Awesome!

  110. May 15, 2009

    Ditch

Jolly green giant pea juice with a dash of lemon…..super! Im still bewildered by the 50+ mark however….if you got a score above average at school you would be pretty happy so why not give this a 20 points…..scores baffle me

    QOTD: mmmm cannot remember

  111. May 15, 2009

    BobbyTiger

Thanks for trying wines that don’t require a draw against my home equity loan. While you had 3 strikes today, you and I know that there are some pretty decent wines out there around the $10 range. Keep plugging.
While the wines were disappointing, I continue to appreciate your reviews.
    Go Canes!

Gary, I’ve got an original SNL John Belushi doll in the Bee outfit if you want to trade a bottle of NZ SVB for it. I saw the psuedo-bee doll in the New Zealand SavBlanc (Cloudy Bay) Episode and wondered if you’re a collector. Let me know!

NOT 3 Strikes!! The B&G was 85 points for a $8 bottle! Come on that’s good value!! I sell B&G, have been to their Chateau Magnol in Bordeaux and have gone through their wine training. Wines from all of the major regions of France; Chateauneuf du Pape, Pouilly Fuisse, Bordeaux, Beajolais, etc. Good stuff for the money!

    QOTD: I apologize a lot.

Even PA carries that first wine, B&G Vouvray, 11.99. But not the other two. A big value play in PA this month is a Santa Ana Torrontes for 6.99 until May 31. It has “deliciousness” and it’s a nice sipper for this time of year.

    Thanks Gary

    Bad luck …

QOTD: The last thing I apoligised for was spilling tea all over a girl at a sushi restaurant last night. Probably my own fault as I knocked the drink over while carrying a friends handbag that clearly I didn’t have a license to drive!

    Cheers

ROUGH episode! See you at the home base soon!

QOTD: I most recently apologized to my room mate for procrastinating: I NEED to put our old fridge on craig’s list because it doesn’t look too stylish sitting in our living room!

Shame there will probably never be a show ‘wines that you can find around the UK’ – but still interesting to see how the more mass-produced wines go.

Gary – I see you are speaking in London in a few months.. any chance of a live wine tasting we could go to?

  127. May 24, 2009

    Dan-o

Those are some pretty poor scores. I would prefer that you focus on wines that are widely available in the $10-20 range that are serviceable.

QOTD – I jumped on somebody at work and although it was deserved, it probably could have been handled better by me. Therefore, I apologized.

  128. June 4, 2009

    JayZee

Boy, that really sucked. But then again, it probably illustrates for me why buying inexpensive, readily available wine is usually a really, really bad play, at least for me.

QOTD: I apologized to my wife – you don’t need to know why.

  129. June 16, 2009

    EaglesRollHard

Is Soave the grape? I thought it was Garganega (sp.?). Anyways, what are some good producers of those wines. Love the show. Go Eagles.
