Gary, those of us who have watched 500 episodes or more have a pretty good idea of your business ethics. We know you sell wine on the internet and we also know you call things like you see them. I for one hope you make a billion dollars and buy the Jets.In these hard economic times free shipping for the Vayner nation is a plus. Thyank you for all you do.
I would like to see an episode about Cali Carignane and Barberas

If hell needs a name change I’d call it pinotage

QOTD: Anybody who says keep it seperate doesn’t understand our business and surely doesn’t buy from you, or perhaps care about money. Free shipping is good, always good. In the trade we’re business people first, selling more wine is what its all about. And thanks to this economy we all have to do what we have to do. The moral high horse is a lonely place where wine sales are rare and fleeting.

Gary, You made the Wall Street journal Gaiter and Brecher list this year! They said you are, ” Wine geek of the moment. His upbeat, charming commentary at tv.winelibrary.com has made him a star and brought him a huge book deal. His many followers are called Vayniacs.”

    QOTD: Keep them separate.

I really enjoyed this episode Gary. Good info, and I’d love to one day catch a nose that reminded me of “Banana peel wrapped in bacon!”

QoTD: No! Outside of WLTV your very inspirational message to “Crush It!” involves transparency and passion, and above all honesty. Sometimes when I tell my WebDev / Internet Marketing clients about your show, marketing methods, and overall strategy their initial reaction is, “Yeah, he uses the show to sell wine from his wine store.” This suspicion will only grow if you start to mix the two. Obviously, us Vayniacs know where you stand based on your review of Shoofly Chardonnay…panning it just after telling us how much of it you are selling, and how people are searching for it on WineLibrary.com. I’m certainly not buying wine that tastes like chicken!! :-)

Between the secret packs, email offers, free.winelibrary.com, and random Twitter promos and codes, I think you are doing plenty to take care of your fans.

    Keep on rockin’ Gary!

Another good show, great pace..Look forward to trying some of those varietals.. Never had a Pinotage.
I think the link between show & Wine Library can be made if it’s for the right occasion. No one is gonna think you sell out especially if they’ve been watching and know a little about you.
Keep it comin, Crush it always!

Excellent show, loved the pace and your focus was laser-beam sharp! Need to get out there and try a Pinotage now.

Gary – I’ve recently starting watching the show, I started with the episode with Kevin Rose from digg! I absolutely love the show!! You have opened up a new love for wine in my life and have helped explain the wine world in a language I can understand. I’m still diversifying my palette and trying to better understand the flavors and articulate them its still helpful to have someone with a passion and knowledge for wine such as yourself. Thank you Gary for every episode, I hope you make at least 1000 more!!! I’ll be there anticipating every episode to come.

QOTD – I currently have 12 bottles of wine in my wish list waiting for a free shipping code. I do not think a free shipping code every once in a while would hurt. I think a free shipping code is a present in itself (my 12 bottles would cost me around 45-60 bux to ship… that’s alot of coin!!!)

i liked the pace of the show– no filler, no sports talk, just wine! the energy was up and that helped quicken the pace a bit. i like getting background info on the varietals and some historical info so that was a plus. much rather hear that then talk about the jets :)

QOTD: i think you could offer some discounts to the store and not be in conflict with the ethos of the show. maybe like you said a few times a year offer some blanket discount and give folks a few weeks to use it so they can wait until you review something that sounds good to try.

Gotta try that Pinotage. Just wikipedia’d it and am intrigued. Though sometimes that “nail polish” smell can bother me. At other times it doesn’t.

As for QOTD – It’s a good tool for converting new video watchers into customers. Most come into the WineLibrary world via the show.. so there’s definitely opportunity to make something happen there. I would guess that veteran watchers/buyers have it all sussed out by now.

I would refrain from over-hyping it, though. Quick mention and then move on to the juice!

I’ve been away for awhile but couldn’t resist watching when I saw the Vermentino. Paired with pesto made from the first, tender basil leaves of Spring… this is classic Liguria!

I think the codes are fine as long as they’re not overdone. When linked to something you’re excited about in your personal life gives me the sense that you want to celebrate with me.

    I like the pacing.

It’s your show Vayner, do what you know!

QOTD: People are thinking way too far into this one…free shipping once or twice a year? Why not?! Your niche in balancing sales and wine review has already been established. To discredit your opinion will take a lot more than a day or two of free shipping, you’ll have to completely change your personality and i don’t see that happening any time soon…keep crapping on those wines!

  13. May 18, 2009

    Kevin K

QOTD: I don’t see why not. I think you’ve done pretty well with the secret packs in the past. Similar concept.

Good pace, it went like a very interesting class.

QOTD: I think it would be a great idea that every once in a while you send out a promo code and you could even link it to the comment, say for every comment on that episode you get an extra special gift or discount via email.

    Good show.

QOTD: Don’t do it! I remember back in the day (ie. my lurker period) when critics threw the accusation of self-promotion of the business. As the great Billy Joel said, “Don’t Go Changin’”.

BTW, WL would have a customer for life if they’d get Joly’s wines in. Vive la Biodynamie!!! ;-)

    Gary,

long time since I have commented, only have time for you on my ipod, thus the lack of comments, however this one deserves a comment.

Please, please keep the two separate. You are already under fire from some (not that we should care) for rating wines AND selling them. I would love to keep that line clear by not mixing up the two… In the long run, it is better for all.

  17. May 18, 2009

    Jade from Portland

    Gary,

QOTD: Keep them separate. I think the show will keep a better, more pure focus. There are avenues on the site for people to access the store and see specials.

  18. May 18, 2009

    BT86

QOTD: Gary, for the love of God. Please keep Wine Library and the show as separate as possible. The fact that you crap all over wines you carry, and give crazy love to wines you don’t carry sometimes, keeps the show real and shows that you really take an objective approach to the show. People that want free-shipping on the show are totally missing the point.

Plus you do free shipping codes every freaking day on your emails. Plus you don’t ship to Georgia!

    Also, I think it’s pronounced “Pin-oh-tahj” and not “Peen-oh-tahj”

  19. May 18, 2009

    Chalz

Nice show, not as much thunder as some past shows.

QOTD: Why not put on the home page a code to enter for free shipping to all who view an episode and then order? Don’t mention it during the show just have it available for us who watch regularly.

  20. May 18, 2009

    Carlitos

QTOD. Dude! I’ll take free shipping any day! I don’t see how that’s pushy, unless you are restricting it to a few selections that you may need to move.

We’re still waiting for the Thunder Cruise only special offer too!!!

Oh yeah, BTW, daughter Miko and her friend had a AWESOME experience on The Thunder Cruise, can’t wait for next year’s program. Thanks, GV!!

QoTD – Gary, let’s face it, the line is not blurry in the least. Everyone knows you are in the wine business and Wine Library is to a great extent, the product of your own marketing genius. I am sure everyone would enjoy and partake of some Wine TV specials . . . check my records: I am addicted to the Free Shipping specials and sales . . . as for your palate, it’s great fun to have access to your reviewed wines aka: secret packs, and then compare my evaluation with your own, so go ahead, take the plunge, especially when you discover an exceptional wine you really want to share with your peeps!!! See you soon, I hope.

    SUUUUUUUUUUUUPER Episode!!!!!! Love the pace…..

qotd: Yo G, How ’bout, Buy ONE Vino, Get TWO FREE, plus FREE
    shipping……. :)

Specials would be nice, but that’s not the sole of the show. If you are running a sale at the retail level it’s worth showing, but I would not make it a focus item…AMM

this is a classic WLTV Episode
    finally :)
