Who knew that a white portuguese wine could retail over 20.oo? never saw one in my market.

    qotd- no mic @ home.

    great show. thanks

    Silly Sammy

Do not use a wireless mic. The mic from the camera already sounds great and it gives us the feel of actually being in the room with you. A wireless mic will add an unnatural component that will not allow you to connect as much with the audience. It will sound more like you are talking into a mic than talking to us in your office. AUTHENTICITY!!!

I never thought sound has been an issue, except for the ‘big crowd’ shows. (which I think you should abandon anyways) Go with what you got, but definitely improve the ‘big guest’ shows, especially if they are outside the THUNDERdome.

Hey Gary who has the first vintage labeling rights to your child. If I may offer a few suggestions for names even though I’m sure this is a done deal.
For a boy: Domainik Romanee-Conti Vaynerchuk, Charles Corton-Charlemagne Vaynerchuk, or my fav Lawrence Lynch-Bages Vaynerchuk(unfortunate this comes with the inevitable nickname Larry the lunchbag).
For a girl Donnatella Dufort-Viviens Vaynerchuk, Villette Veuve-Cliquot Vaynerchuk, or Yvette Yquem Vaynerchuk.
You get the idea. Just be careful of the nicknames derivatives. Look at mine.
Be sure to share this with the Mrs. as well as my comments after Gigondas episode. Need all the humor you can get about now is my guess. Kitch

QOTD: No, it’s really not very WLTV.
Didn’t you try it ages back, and it just didn’t work.
Those things will just end up causing more problems.

I do however think that you can improve the show by sending me a wristband.
Good luck with the Baby Gary.

as always great show never a dull moment in the GV universe, You continue to educate and inspire. I love the introduction to “New” areas around the world
I wish we had access to the same number of labels as other states, because the Portugesse and obscure French regions are my love affair yet there is more red tape than one cares to deal with to get it into TN

    QOTD: no mic

GV, I think the Portugal shows are awesome and love getting some knowledge about this area. Keep it coming!

Gary, thanks for doing another Portugese show! I find the Alentejo is often “new world” in style – it tends to make fruit-forward wines and it is also more open to experimentation than the rest of Portugal. Alentejo reds are also the wines of the Portuguese Carnation Revolution!

The Esporao Reserva is always a fun, hedonistic wine. Esporao also has a Touriga Nacional varietal that is really interesting – with the complex expressive nose you often get from T-Nac.

QOTD: Gotta agree with those who say no mic at home, yes on the road (or at least do something to improve the sound on the road).

Hoping you have the new arrival! Great moment. Time will some strange things. The next three months will be the fastest (and slowest) of your life.

I would not worry about audio right now. I would first fix the lighting situation. If you could flag the light that is spilling onto the back wall off it would be much more aesthetically pleasing. you might be able to do it with adjusting the barn doors on the light without much work at all.

production quality is often overlooked but is so important to maintain and bring in new viewers.

Yo G, Another SUUUUUUUPER Episode!!! You are on da ROOOOOOOOLLLLLL!!! :)

Mum and I say no- if it’s just for fun, then perhaps your under-estimating your awesome fun factor and if you’re going for convenience, then I think this is moving in the commercial un-casual side of programming. :)

Have you decided with what wine will you toast the baby?! I love the anticipation, that’s cool.

I am kinda diggin the mic, but I’m good either way. But I vote FOR MIC

    that is all…
    ciao

    jeffe

I vote you keep it acoustic, GV. We can hear you just fine and I remember the mic experiment a ways back really creeping me out. It sounded like you were in the camera, not in front of it.

That said, it may help to mic up your guests, especially if you know they’re the low-key type — Peter Mondavi most recently. I’ve had some fun times with my ipod wheel doing volume gymnastics during a few of those interview episodes.

QOTD: wear a mike if its in a busy/noisy environment or when you are far from the camera (like the show you did with the canadian hockey dude who has his own wines)…Otherwise, we can hear you LOUD and clear!

I have a bottle of the Esparao 2005 waiting…prob drinking it next week!

So, what wine/port have you gotten to mark this joyous occassion? So when your baby hits 21…you have got a 21 year old bottle to pop open! Wonder if you’ll still be screaming at us then!!! ;)

    Re K Man comment:
K Man…Food for thought….Go back and watch the “Crush It” episode where GV tells us about the new book and tastes wines that he thinks will “Crush It.” Well, the wines did not “Crush It,” and GV’s last words on the episode are something to the effect of: “I hope you are all starting to get it, price and quality in wine do not go hand in hand.” My quote is not exact, but you get the point. This is a wine merchant telling it like it is, and possibly hurting his sales of expensive wine in the process (where the profit margins are juicy). Please applaud GV for hustling his ass off and trying to make coin in an honest fashion. He ain’t perfect, but he’s consciously trying his best.

    Mauricio Fernandes (Brazil)

Thank you Gary! For educating us on wine and life all this time.
Baby countdown!! Congratulations and blessings to the baby, you, your wife and family!! Huge moment!!

I love Portuguese wines too; maybe it’s in my DNA. (Portuguese ancestry…)

About that ESPORÃO wine, I think you should note the influence of prized Australian Winemaker David Baverstock. That’s the magic: Old world terroir plus new world talent.

QOTD: Yes. (Although the camera sound is fine, why not keep improving the show?!)

  23. May 21, 2009

So I’m guessing the lack of episode yesterday means baby has arrived?!?!?!?!

QOTD. At home is fine. THe accoustics on the road i.e. Gretsky et al are disappointing because the dialog is inaudible. Best, Naples Kathy aka Champagne Lady

    Steve Bjerklie

QOTD: I defer to the informed, expert opinions on which types of mic are best for your arrangement. But: You’ve definitely got to do something, and do it fast, to improve the audio of The Thunder Show, *especially* when you are in a remote location with a guest. The Great Gretzky is nearly inaudible on the show in which you interviewed him (you were hard to hear too) — the bad sound ruined what could have been one of your best episodes ever.
