QOTD: Juno. No question about it. I hadn’t seen it and it was so funny. When she told the dude, “Get a whiff of those sparklin’ top notes,” I almost peed myself.

    Paryb

Nice show man, I said the EXACT same thing when I had the NOBILO a couple weeks ago, I said quote “This wine is like a charicature of itself” Seriously, it’s like someone took New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc concentrate and mixed it thick!

QOTD: Best flick lately? Watched Forrest Gump the other day for about the millionth time…that movie never gets old.

Yeah, good to have you back.

  12. June 10, 2009

Would have tried the chardonnay first. Like especially austrian Sauvignon Blanc of Umathum with the “vino-lok” glass closure.

    QOTD: Fried green tomatoes.

Good show, Gary & congrats to Misha Ava, Lizzie and finally you!

awesome episode….. love the thunder show. Just spent first week back from college watching all 600 episodes…. can mott be a “tasting guest?” congrats!

    QOTD: forgetting sarah marshall

Nice to have you back in the office. I’m curious if the Nobilo winery is owed by Frank Nobilo the golfer? Congrats again on the new edition to the family. How about an under $20 Reisling episode in the near future? Thanks.

QOTD – We just watched Benjamin Button. Very long but pretty good.

  16. June 10, 2009

    Dr T in NC

Nice to see you back. Sorry I can’t help on the QofD!

    Pittsburgh Alex

Thats going to be a long time before that hospital wrist band falls off.

QOTD: I don’t know if Lizzie would be down with this, but the Seven Samurai was best movie I watched in the last eight weeks.

  18. June 10, 2009

    Kathy Hughes

QOTD – Didn’t order this movie but saw it on TV….Moonstruck with Cher and a young Nichoas Cage. Totally great. Enjoy, Naples Kathy aka Champagne Lady

  19. June 10, 2009

    Joyce

Yeah, yeah, yeah…..bring back Misha!!!!!!!!! Now the Thunder Show is not about the wine, anymore.

    QOTD: Rent “Man On Wire”

  21. June 10, 2009

    Ant_G

Don’t blame yourself- you are most likely right on going against Wine Enthusiast. It seems to me that the Enthusiast ratings have been suspect recently. Not sure what going on there, maybe they switched over to 125 point scale and didn’t bother to inform anyone.

QOTD: City of Industry, not supeterrific happy hour, but held my interest, and I am a sucker for a hiest movies.

  22. June 10, 2009

    Ivan

That Simone looks like a nice play. Will add to my WL wish list. You’re back to pumping out awesome content. I love it.

QOTD: If nothing else… please rent Season 1 of The Wire (warning R rated). It was the best show ever that few ever saw. This show brings the Thunder and will rock your world. Oh yes, you will be using quotes from the show. It is that smart and well written.

  23. June 10, 2009

    Glen....winecrazy.com

Nice show Homey. I like the boring ass wine comment…lol

QOTD: I don’t watch TV…only wine wibrary tv. Don’t rent the moviews either. But I did watch the old Chris Farley dvd last week from the best of the saturday night live collection. Remember that? Ravioli…Holy Canoli!!!..lol

  24. June 10, 2009

    “Picnic Bird” Chardonnay. Brilliant!

  25. June 10, 2009

Congratulations on the baby, Meesha is it? A girl? Awww…
And to those scrach and sniff stickers in the ’80s, I do remember the witch and the skunk and the others, those little round stickers, I collected those, before Garbage Pail Kids. Did you collect those?

As for the witch scratch ‘n sniff (rhymes), I think it was just a marketing play on Halloween related items for kids who eat that stuff up.

“Tastes like paper with no crayons in sight”

Best movie I’ve ordered in the last 8 weeks: funny you mentioned BTTF, cos I did order Back to the Future 1,2 and 3 and played a marathon for some friends last week.

Good to have you back Gary, missed you and again, congratulations on the baby.

  27. June 10, 2009

    SteveF

Glad to have you back. Misha is such a beautiful little girl.
    QOTD:Little Dorrit
P.S. Still waiting for my shout out of the birth of my first granddaughter.

  28. June 10, 2009

    italianwinelover

So glad to see you back in the saddle….I like how you introd the wine before tasting them – I don’t think I’ve seen you do that before! Congrats again for being blessed with “Little Mish” I feel so close that I want to go buy her a present, but hope you get the card in the mail soon!!!

QOTD: Right now I rented from my library the Friends season! I also watched Northern Exposure alot – old series are hilarious cuz you really only have a 1/2 hour sometimes to sit down!

  29. June 10, 2009

    Wardo

Good episode…great to see a value wine get good praise and a cardboard chardonnay get slammed. Congrats on the new baby, btw. I’m sure you will soon learn to treasure sleeping, as it will happen sparingly for the next year. My nephew is almost 2 now, and that was the input my brother and sister-in-law could offer about a new baby.

QOTD: Flash of Genius. A true story of a great American–one that is very inspirational–and definitely makes you feel good…I think it would be up your alley

  30. June 10, 2009

    NicoRiesling

    GV,

Picnic chardonnay? really, you should be in Marketing, you’re wasting your time at the store.

QOTD: “The Vikings” with Tony Curtis and Kirk Douglas. Great movie to watch with my son, laughing about those silly Vinkings!

  31. June 10, 2009

    Zube

I’m hoping to be able to find the Simone, especially at a nice low price point.

QOTD, or TOTD (Task of the day). Just to stick with wine as the subject, I enjoyed Bottle Shock. Maybe not the BEST movie I’ve watched, but totally enjoyable and a supposedly somewhat true story (Calif wines vs French wines in a famous 1976 Paris blind tasting!) Alan Rickman and Bill Pullman star.

  32. June 10, 2009

    CaseyLee

    we’re changing it !
i can get that tolosa for 15 so i will be pickin that up today.
hahah zach morris highlights ? nice call
this summer i am going to focusing more on white wines to expand my palate in THAT direction. thanks for another great episode welcome back in the hot hot thunder seat. we alll missed you. congrats again on your adorable daughter. . maybe she will get her own generation wristband?? so we can all rock that for you and her. that would be pretty cool gary.
QOTD – Clint Eastwood’s Grand Taurino :) saw it last week not a bad movie i really really liked it

    benricosan

Im going to find that chardonnay and drink it.

QOTD: Not some old dude here, im late 20’s, but my recomend is “Wages of Fear” (1953),

    imdb:
In a decrepit South American village, men are hired to transport an urgent nitroglycerine shipment without the equipment that would make it safe

  34. June 10, 2009

    Phil G

I’ve had the Picnic Bird Chard for the past few vintages – it is always fun and easy drinking! Great on the porch…

QOTD – I thought the performances in Doubt were great, but I would have to recommend the movie Once. It is a quassi-musical that won the best oscar song a year or two ago. It is a great snapshot of two people meeting and changing each other’s lives.

  35. June 10, 2009

    North Carolina Wine TV (Kipp)

Never been a huge fan of SB but will give it another go. the Chard sounds interesting as well.

  36. June 10, 2009

    Michael Clark

Gary…you are BACK and you are bringing some SERIOUS thunder!

QOTD: I watched Sideways again. It’s a lot of fun and there is a lot more going on there than just Miles’ obsession with pinot noir. I don’t order movies, just watch DVDs on my laptop.

Good show and thanks for the Facebook tip at garyvaynerchuk.com!

  37. June 10, 2009

    JayZee

Welcome back, Vayner-dude! It was nice to see you “back in the saddle” on the Thunder Show. I will see what I can do about the “task” you have assigned us.

QOTD: “The Reader” – excellent flick

  38. June 10, 2009

    Brian

    Hey GV,

Recent Fan not only of WLTV but of your other passion’s as well. I have been going through the old episodes and pciking out some great recommendations and doing a little palate exapsion.

Quick QOTD for you: What happens if lil’ Misha turns out to not be a Jets fan? What then?

QTOD: New Season of Weeds is just starting on showtime.

  39. June 10, 2009

    sharon

We saw “Singing in the Rain” again on Turner Classics and loved it.
Also, think of some old faves like Casablanca, The Maltese Falcon, Children of Paradise all very romantic movies. New mothers probably should avoid movies like Fanny and Alexander or The Wild Bunch, anything violent. Seriously. And absolutely NOTHING with children in jeopardy!

  40. June 10, 2009

    BF

QOTD: I am an Ocean’s Eleven (new one) guy. Also, As Good As It Gets.

Also, great Zack Morris reference. How about a Kelly Kebowski (?) one at some point? She’s like a sparkling shiraz.

  41. June 10, 2009

    Esther W.

2 days in a role. nice. When are you going to be on Jimmy Fallon?
QOD: Grand Torino – best movie I’ve seen this year. you need to watch it.

  42. June 10, 2009

    Richard Arblaster

QOTD: I’ll go with the last movie I bought on DVD X-Men: The Last Stand. I’m not going to say its awesome but it’s watchable.

  43. June 10, 2009

    NY Pete

    yo … welcome back dude!

  46. June 10, 2009

    manonthemoon

Nice to see that fatherhood hasn’t killed you yet. And not going to go seek out a “bad” wine to help solidify your thoughts, sorry GV.

QOTD: I don’t really rent movies these days since I get most movie channels. But the last good movie I watched at home had to be American History X, not really an uplifting movie, to say the least.

  47. June 10, 2009

    castello

I don’t do movies. Boring, the movies that is.
I was forced to see Monster and Aliens while I was babysitting my neice and it was OK. Imagining a 50 foot Reese Witherspoon was almost worth the bad popcorn.
    Good show!
Once it heats up here in cali I’ll try some whites. For now, life seems too short to drink white whine.

  48. June 10, 2009

    Mr Cook

Great show. You are more relaxed looking now that Misha was born and everyone in healthy, a blessing for sure.

    QOTD: Gran Torino.

  49. June 10, 2009

    sam

Nice to have you back Gary!

I’m sure your hectic schedule will get even more so. I’m sure you can handle it.

Couldn’t find the Tolosa, so I can’t pan it like you did.

QOTD: The last good movie I saw was “Pride and Glory” which is available on The Pirate bay: http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/4642195/Pride.And.Glory.DvDrip-aXXo
As of late however I fell in love withe the TV series “Lost”. Seeing as I don’t have cable TV, I had not heard of it until recently. The whole 5 seasons are also available for free on everywhere on the web.

    Cheers!

  50. June 10, 2009

    PrimoVino

Nice show, Gary… I was having withdrawals last week, but the bottles I picked up while I was in Napa the week prior helped me get through.

    QOTD/Movie: “Play Misty for Me”

Question for GV: Have you ever taken a sniffy sniff and got some wine in your nose? I know a friend of a guy of a friend that it happened to… okay it was me. I had been tasting all day, that’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it.

Congrats on your new baby girl!

    -Gregory

  51. June 10, 2009

    Lawrence Leichtman

The Dark Knight. Had the Tolosa prior and thought it was crap. Didn’t know it had such a high rating but that wouldn’t have mattered. Agreed about being ticked off at that rating.

  52. June 10, 2009

    purplejuicebruce

QOTD…..The wrestler was pretty good the latest 007 movie was decent too.

  53. June 10, 2009

QOTD: The Uninvited (2009). The DVD came out recently. Kind of spooky and suspenseful.

  54. June 10, 2009

    Marshall

QOTD:What kind of films do you like?? I know you liked “The Warriors” so you might want to check out “Southeren Comfort,” “Class of 1984,” or “Heathers”.

  55. June 10, 2009

    urbwes

I don’t have netflix, but I saw “Awakenings” on encore not too long ago. I really enjoyed the the story and it has Robert Deniro and Robin Williams in very unexpected roles. (1990’s movie)

  56. June 10, 2009

    Lau

QOTD: check out Coraline – sweet and scary at the same time, good stuff.

  57. June 10, 2009

    Kevin C

Welcome back my friend. I’ll try to find teh Simone but snce I like SB better than Chard anyway, I’ll take a pazzzzzz on the Tolosa

QOTD: Just got around to and greatly enjoyed “Vicky Christina Barcelona”

  58. June 10, 2009

    JasonA

Good show Gary. I have been on a white wine kick the last two weeks, so this show fit right in.

I wonder if the No-oak version of the Tolosa would be anymore agreeable with your palate?

I haven’t seen the Tolosa around these parts, but I will look again this weekend.

Last movie I saw was Cars. Not the newest movies, but new to my 2 year old son. I think he watched it 7 times on the trip to and from Disney World last month. I finally broke down and watched it with him, instead of just hearing the dialog from the back seat. Soon the kiddy movies will be more of your life as well! haha.

    Jason

  59. June 10, 2009

    Eric Z.

Gary, there’s an easy million to be made with Picnic Bird Chardonnay.

    QOTD: Children of Men.

QOTD: Party Down on Watch Instantly – Netflix.

A TV show somewhat similar to the Office. It involves a group of out-of-work-actors in California who work at a catering service. Each episode is 30 minutes, and covers a different catering job. It was shown on Starz and does have some bad language and nudity. Half the episodes were directed by Fred Savage of Wonder Years fame. I went through the 12 episode season in under a week. Check it out.

  64. June 10, 2009

    Laurie in VT

Great to see you back in the office looking amazingly well rested!

QOTD: Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. It’s a hoot, even if you are unable to focus and are frequently interrupted while viewing!

    California Cab Lover

You crack me up! I love your honesty and your lack of malice.
Have not tried or heard of the wine you hated.

But…… what is the wine you will buy for Misha? A birth wine? You know what I am talking about.

  68. June 10, 2009

    Andrew D

    Hey Gary

Thanks for the show, interesting to hear your thoughts on the NZ Sav Blanc, I’m getting the impression today that many of these wines are really starting to go over the top – to big, to intense, to full on and loose style and subtality.

QOTD: Haven’t been watching many movies, but have got into a few TV series. Just finished the first series of Heroes (for some reason I’d never watched it before). But my recomendation would definitely be Underbelly a Australia series, set in Melbourne and based around the true story of the gangland war. A show that is really, really worth seeking out.

    Cheers
    Andrew

  69. June 10, 2009

    Dominus

Yes, it is great to see you back in the seat again!

Good show, surprised the Simone did so well and the Tolosa sucked. I’ll try them both and leave a tasting comment. Nice label on the Nobilo, I agree.

QOTD: I have watched “Shutter” (you could change one of the vowels to get the review) bad, bad, the newest “Batman” movie (almost as bad) and “WWII: Behind Closed Doors” on PBS which was absolutely amazing. Watch it, we will all learn something.

  70. June 10, 2009

    jason

garwah. it is good to see you in the office cause the baby needs shoes and so does mommy. i am diggin the white show. i haven’t had a red in some time now. white and roses all day. i was just in venice nd a bunch of whites from the veneto that i have never heard of. so good!

QOTD-Last night….Gran Torino! Clint Eastwood is an American Treasure!

  73. June 10, 2009

    David Dadekian

QOTD: I too have a new-ish daughter (16-months) so I can honestly say we haven’t even had time to watch a whole movie! Though now that the TV season is over (Lost, Scrubs, Numbers) the DVR is clear so we might get to movies.

  74. June 10, 2009

    Zeek27

QOTD – Straw Dogs, with Dustin Hoffman and Susan George – Directed by Sam Peckinpah – seventh time I’ve watched it – awesome….

….bought 10 mixed wines I’d never had before last week, had a party and only one was worth the effort – much like todays show….

  75. June 10, 2009

    Ryan from brooklyn

    Gary, congrats man!

Qotd for you: What about your boy Sanchez?

    Great show btw

Great to see you back, Gary!

I have been thinking about trying the Nobilo. Even though you somewhat panned it, I’m still going to try it.

    QOTD: Taken

Awesome to see the Chilean Sauv Blanc pull through.

One thing – you have worn the same pink stripe shirt for like 8 of the past 10-12 episodes, dating back to the TimF. show.

  78. June 10, 2009

    Jaton

Never left a comment before, and been watch your show since episode 150. It’s great to see you back in the saddle again. If you’re looking for something to watch, The Last Dragon. Great old school comedy/action.

QOTD – Planet Earth. Seriously, Gary. Sit back with your wife, relax and enjoy all the amazing things this planet we call “home” has to offer.

  81. June 10, 2009

    Adam J

Its good to have you back in the seat Gary.
QOTD: “Dont mess with the Zohan”……but my wife hated it.

  82. June 10, 2009

    Tom Jones

If you have not seen them rent the Firefly series by Joss Whedon. It was one of the best shows on TV and the stupid execs canceled it in the first 12 episodes. It is awesome!

  83. June 10, 2009

    M

QOTD: The original Bad News Bears movie!

PA carries the Nobilo Icon. They just lowered the price (to $10.79) and made it a close-out item. Why? The regular Nobilo Sauv Blanc is on sale in PA for $10.99 June 1-28. Then it goes back to regular price, $12.99. It flies off of the shelf. Fast mover.

  84. June 10, 2009

    David Mark Horowitz

    Nice new wristband trend.

Just please continue not to say radool;)

  85. June 10, 2009

Terrific return to the office. Your timing was brilliant.

QOTD: Slap Shot (1977), iTunes Store.

  86. June 10, 2009

    redmon

I’ll try the simone for 6 bucks for sure . will be stopping by the store when I visit the rents in S. Orange next week.

QOTD – do not, i repeat, do not accidentally watch gone, baby, gone. My wife and I watched it like six months ago (we have an infant and a 3 year old). Not enjoyable when you have young kids. glad to see you’re doing well…secretly waiting to see more fatigue in your eyes. Maybe you’ll get lucky, or maybe you can afford a live in ; )

  87. June 10, 2009

    Kelly Goff

Good to have you back Gary!

I kinda wish this was a blind tasting…but I love it when you slam highly rated wines!

QOTD: The only movies we watch are with the kids. The last was Hotel for Dogs, lame but the kids liked it. On second thought, you might actually somewhat enjoy it…just kiddin’ Seriously, opt for sleep instead of movies…trust me!

  88. June 10, 2009

    Drew

Young Frankenstein! Puttin on the ritzzzz! LOL!

Gary, what’s up with your new coach and all his trash talk? Please address this in your next show. All of us down here in FLA want to know your opinion! Can’t wait for the season to start! Thank God wine brings us all together!

  89. June 10, 2009

    Yo G Man,

What did you rate the Simone, looked like 90 from your expressions, not like the “picnic Bird” Fandazzle

QOTD: There were two movies that I enjoyed the most in the last 8 weeks. One was Body of Lies (2008), with Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe, and directed by Ridley Scott. This movie was unexpectedly good, and showed a side of DiCaprio far different from that in The Titanic. The second movie that I enjoyed a lot was Slumdog Millionaire, which probably required no introduction. Other than these two, may I also recommend The Kite Runner, Australia, Milk, Changeling, and Frozen River. These are all very decent movies. Right now, I have The Wrestler and Marley & Me at home, and if I weren’t watching WLTV, responding to this QOTD, and trying to figure out what wines I want to buy today, I would be watching one of these movies already.

    Keep up the good works.

AWESOME to see the office behind you. Love the hospital tag. Let’s see that bad boy make it a full year.

Got on a little Michael Mann kick…Love the cinematography on two strong flicks to watch again or for first time:

    1. Heat

    2. The Insider

    And then…

Dodgeball (great to watch multiple times)

And then of course this funny ass short about an Obsessed Meter Man

Good to see you back. Cograts on your baby girl. Big ups. Good stuff on today’s tasting. I am learning to be a Court of Master Sommelier. I passed the Intro course and now taking the intro or ABC’s of wine course by the Spectator. So I am re-tasting my whites. You gave me some good info on the Nobilo SB. I cant wait to smell the big big grass. Because I don’t smoke it no more. I’d rather do the Sniffy Sniff then the smokey smoke. Peace and Best Wishes.
    Yours Truely,

It is so very good for your return.

Just tried the Nobilo 2008 Icon Sauvignon Blanc. Really enjoy it but I am a huge fan of the New Zealand style SB. Will look for the Simone SB and give it a try as well as the Tolosa Chardonnay. But I really do not like oaked Chardonnay’s.

I will continue to remember your new family in my prayers. Your daughter is almost as cute as my grandson, Agustus. Who knows, they may get together some day, and I think that would be so cool.

QOTD: Best wine? and/or best movie? I’ll answer both. Best wine- Breggo Cellars Pinot Noir 2007 Anderson Valley. Not too bad a mark-up at Pluckemin Inn.

Movie–That Darn Cat–the original with Hayley Mills. Not a movie but the new Showtime Series starring Edie Falco, “Nurse Jackie”.

  97. June 10, 2009

Uh oh…I just picked up a 6 pack of Pinot Noir from WL that had a big score from WE. I didn’t necessarily buy it because of the score, but it certainly didn’t hurt my decision making.

QOTD: I liked: Milk. Sean Penn was Harvey Milk, period.

Gary – you seemed the like the Chilean Sauv Blanc better than the New Zealand one, however, you rated the Simone one point higher… I’m curious to know if that score was because you were excited about the QPR of the Simone in comparison to the New Zealand even though you really like the 2nd one better. I’m interested to hear a clarification!!!

QOTD: It’s been a while since I’ve rented a good movie from home. I caught a movie on HBO Demand called “The Invasion” with Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig, don’t waste your time on that one…

Task of the Day: It may be a while before I accept your challenge. I really have NOT been enjoying Chardonnays (especially from CA)

It’s great to see you back in action. You have a special glow over you and seem relaxed…

Gary – Welcome back to the desk!!!!
Pink shirt one of your favourites??? I don’t mind it myself.

Wow – the Tolosa Chardonnay – what a back-flip!…started off ‘typical cali chard’…..oaky yadda yadda….taste…’good job tolosa’…..then BANG.. BORING BORING BORING…obviously one of the biggest tasting let downs you’ve had on WLTV…Love it dude – speak your mind.
    ‘Picnic Bird’ Chardonnay…..freaken funny man

All the best from Aussie land

QOTD: I was reading through the comments and saw Ivan suggested watching “The Wire”. I agree 100%… It’s definitely one of the best TV series EVER. I’m going to go out on a limb and just say its better than the Sopranos. That’s right, I said it, I went there. It is awesome.

    Gary,

Watch The Beast from 1988 with a very young Steven Baldwin playing support. It is a beautiful movie with epic scenery of a 1980’s war – Soviet v. Afghanistan. Awesome lesson about 2 cultures learning from each other. Not really a chic flick to share with your Mrs. but a total Dood war movie.

Every message I leave from now on I am going to ask when you are going to be able to ship to Kansas. Huh! When?

    Lots of love,

    Jason

QOTD: Besides the classics, of course, like Fletch, My Cousin Vinny, Office Space, The Jerk, Airplane, Caddyshack, Risky Business … Casablanca, To Have and Have Not, Chinatown, Double Indemnity … What I’d recommend that’s a little on the fringe is a BBC series called MI-5. Must watch chronologically from beginning to end — fab spy & espionage stuff! In terms of kiddie flicks, highly recommend Hoodwinked (watch Fletch first to catch some nifty nuances) and a cartoon series called Avatar. Good times!

  109. June 10, 2009

I’ll look for the Tolosa and comment back..

QOTD: l gotta list @ least 3 fantastic films I’ve seen in the past 8 weeks:
    Cinema Paradiso,
Once in a Lifetime: The Extraordinary Story of the New York Cosmos
    Some Like it Hot

kinda all over the place but all worth your time. Enjoy.

Congratulations on the very beautiful baby Mischa – she’s angelic!
Since you are so appreciative of family, I recommend “Moonstruck.” It’s a very touching & funny flick with Nicolas Cage, Cher (her very best role) and Olympia Dukakis. It’s classic! All the best to you & your family.

Thanks but I’ll take your word for it Gary. 12 bones to say yuck no thanks.I could get two of the Simone for that. :)

I haven’t ordered or rented a movie in a couple years. Try Hulu.com for all sorts of movies and sit com’s. It’s free too! Try kitchen confidential a series that ran only one season but was pretty good. About a restaurant and the staff. Wine and food are always funtertainment.

    -state of play (solid)
    -mishima (ditto)
    -angels & demons (mindless ‘fun’)
    -gamorah (hard to watch)
-a whole bunch of old scrubs and curb your enthusiasm episodes. good laughs

top show – you got on a roll with that last wine – very funny work

QOTD: The Hangover, although that is a new release in theatres so it won’t help if you’re staying in. Both The Wrestler and Grand Torino were quite excellent and very worth checking out.

FWIW, no mention of the nose on WS for the Nobilo, and all of WE’s ratings search isn’t working for me at the moment, so right now it’s GV 2, major press 0. This reminded me of the episode 149, where some scores between WE/WS/WA/GV varied quite a bit.

QOTD: The only movie I’ve seen in the last 8 weeks was Night at the Museum 2, and I liked the first one better. I don’t subscribe to any of the mail rental services, I just buy them cheap on Ebay or Amazon, or use Redbox ($1/night!) for newer releases.

The Witch scratch & sniff sticker was part of a Halloween series which included a Bat that smelled like smoke, a ghost that smelled like coconut (what!?), and a Skeleton that smelled like, well kind of like the Oak Monster. The Witch smelled like licorice.

Why are you surprised that the Nobilo S.V. is not all the Wine Spectator says it is? Some of their so-called experts really leave me with questions about whether they have even tasted the wines they are rating and Harvey Steiman, in particular, has a really odd palate. I have almost never agreed with him on the quality of a wine. And since I live in Oregon and drink lots of Oregon and Washington wines, I get chances to compare my evaluations with his on a regular basis.

I should say, to be fair, that W.S. has other wine writers and tasters whom I think are very good at what they do.

    Hey Gary,
Glad to see you’re back in the saddle again. And of course, congrats once again on little Misha. She’s mad cute.
I watched Crackers on Hulu the other day and had a good laugh. Sean Penn in his third movie ever, with Don Sutherland, Wallace Shawn and a bunch of otehrs in a super corney 80’s crime caper. Think Oceans 11 set in 1980’s San Fran Mission district on a $5000 budget.

GV…I see that you’ve already figured out that having a child means going to fewer and fewer movies at an actual theater. You’re a quick study. The most recent movie I’ve rented at home was “Slumdog Millionaire.”

  141. June 11, 2009

“Picnic Bird Chardonnay” — LOL — You’re going to see that on a label next year, Gary. Mark my words! And it will sell a million, because everyone wants to take a bottle of buttered popcorn chardonnay out on to a hillside and have a picnic with it!!! Copyright the name NOW!

QOTD: You should see Defending Your Life if you like Albert Brooks. It is a sweet, quiet, funny, profound movie that will help you and Lizzie to bond even tighter.

  143. June 11, 2009

Hey little Gar! It’s good to hear Mott’s voice again. You always seem more happy when you are in the office. Did you give Little Bear and Lil Mish a kiss for me yet?

Great show. Nice to see you back in the saddle.
QOTD: First of all, I see that you are embracing what it means to have a newborn, more time at home. Rent all the movies you can for the first few weeks while little Mish is just eating and sleeping, b/c after this first few weeks, you will not be able to sit down for an entire movie ever again.
Fav movies, I will be doing a disservice to loopers (caddies) everywhere if I didn’t mention Caddyshack, but I rented Ironman a few weeks ago… It was great

    Kell Brigan

(Ghosts do smell like coconut. What?!?)

Movie: My Kid Could Paint That (Art & wine have similar vibes, sometimes, methinks. Hype versus authenticity. Keeping it real. The roles of teachers, mentors, coaches. And, it’s got a cute kid and some neato art and art snobs it’s OK to laugh at.) There’s also a good one on Hulu about Alan Abel (one of the world’s great Con Men for Good) — http://www.hulu.com/watch/56337/abel-raises-cain. Concur on Man on Wire — good stuff.

About the Tolosa — gonna pass. I really hate oak in general, so my opinion wouldn’t be worth much.

  146. June 11, 2009

    Grant

With so many excellent wines out there in the world, why are these people still buying all these lousy “California style” chardonnays? I think soon it will be like looking back on 1980’s fashion and hairstyles . . . and saying, “how could I have knowingly done that to myself?” That’s my hope, anyway.

I tried few months ago (from WL) 2006 Tolosa Chard’ “No oak”, whole bottle. Review seem to be the same used for half-bottle you tried. Vote: didn’t order it again. I wouldn’t be as harsh as 75 points though I agree with your tasting points (as far as I can remember). My wife would likely agree with you on the score: she drank one glass and didn’t want to have anything to do with it anymore.

QOTD: Dersu Uzala, by Kurosawa, made in Russia. Rarely seen masterpiece (score 99). Available on DVD at many rentals.

Why do some of you say “I hate oak?” HOW CAN YOU BE A WINE DRINKER AND HATE OAK?!?! Oak is absolutely necessary in making good wine, whether you’re and old world or new world fan. If you don’t like oak, don’t drink chardonnay!

  155. June 11, 2009

    GP

The way you described both the Chilean and the New Zealand wines lead me to believe that I will like them, so they’re on my To-Buy-List. I’m going to pass on the third wine, because I’m not a CA-Chardoney fan anyway, indeed it’s a rare Chardoney of any kind that I care anything for.

QOTD: Tripletts of Bellville, Burn After Reading, Bandits, and Big Lebowski–you gotta see them All!

A double feature of Jonathan Nossiter’s “Mondovino” and Federico Fellini’s “8 1/2″ made a real nice movie night a couple of weeks ago.

One Tempranillo from Abacela (Oregon), I cannot remember the vintage, really hit the spot one hot evening.

Being recently introduced to “The Thunder Show,” I will say you express a personality that would go over the top if not for your honest humility. You certainly have the charisma for continued success and I extend blessings to your family and friends. May your cups always be full.

Great to have you back and putting up shoes. I understand how the dear Misha (a phenomenally gorgeous baby) would be distracting from about everything else, including perhaps, water and breathing.

We watched “Burn After Reading” relatively recently and really enjoyed it. And the old Muppet Show DVDs are always good for throwback fun.

Great episode, proving once again that you make the show and not the wines, though the Simone sounds like something to maybe buy a case of for the summer. Great to see you back in full force after a much deserved break, congratulations. I like the idea about the bracelet, at least for your situation, other hospital visits may be less memorable. I’m with you on the witch too, what is a witch supposed to smell like, let’s see if anyone has any insight into this.

QOTD – I’ve been playing with AppleTV a lot lately, and a lot of times I’ll find myself watching a dozen trailers, not being too impressed with anything or it just getting too late and I end up not watching anything, but recently, I’m going to go with Yes Man, and as a side note the book is even better and completely different

  166. June 11, 2009

    “Picnic Bird”!! haha!

Don’t you hate it when wines don’t meet your expectations?

QOTD: I am a HUGE movie watcher, so I am going to go with Akeelah and The Bee with Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne.

p.s.-sorry for slowing down on the comments. I’ll work on it, promise ;)

I was shocked to hear how little you thought of Tolosa’s Chardonnay. 75? As a previous comment indicated, that’s pretty harsh. Here are my notes:

Good to be back to watching you, still have to watch the last episode with your special guest. :) Glad you are enjoying fatherhood. My husband says it just gets better. We were gone for a couple of days and up until eleven last night playing with trains, up at 6 because my little guy just wanted to hang out with daddy after being gone. Good stuff. As for the wines, will have to check out the Sauvignon Blanc. Love grassy and herbaceous, especially under $10.
QOTD: No Country For Old Men, Scary good.

QOTD: Not a new release, but Master & Commander in high-def, baby. The story lacks a little focus, but it’s decent. Mainly, though, it is visually stunning. Great shot of the Galapagos, great sets and costumes, really fun stuff.

Meanwhile, I’ll have to seek out the Tolosa and see what I think. 75 v. 93 is about as big a difference as we’ve seen on the show.

August Rush. I know you like music and you’ve just had the baby. This one will tug at the heart strings and lift you up all at the same time. Plus, I bet Lizzie will dig it.

Do you have any tips on how to drink less wine? I don’t think I’m alcoholic (as yet) but you know how it goes… you build up a bit of a cellar, it’s another night in semi-working, you’re eating duck and there’s there’s that tasty little pinot, pasta and there’s that nice nero, salmon so there’s that sauvignon or semillon or what ever… it’s just kinda hard to resist (hic).

QOTD Last movie I watched was The Warriors. Do NY gangs still go in for face paint, blow dried hair do’s and lumberjack looks?

    GV,

Big time congrats on Misha. What a cutie! As a dad of 2 young children (10 months & 3 years), I can honestly say that nothing is more fun than being a dad while being completely exhausting at the same time.

QOTD: “Taken” with Liam Neeson was unbelievable if you like thrillers, but be warned, it is a little rough subject matter especially for a father of a young girl.

I actually like the tolosa no oak and “estate” chards. I think I was drinking 05 of that wine though. The 04 1772 is excellent. APPARENTLY I AM THE ONLY ONE WHO HAS ALREADY HAD TOLOSA’S LINE OF WINES. They are over priced a bit when you hit hte midrange and upper level wine, but look at Domaine Alfred! Good but over priced too.

Funny you had the Simone on Wednesday Gary!

    Story for ya!

Last Friday, I pass by a Local Wine Store. I say to myself, ” Let me go in and just look but I’m not going to buy anything.” One of the first ones wines that catch my eye was the Simone Blanc because of the rating and the price. Normally, I don’t have whites that often, especially, whites from Chile so this seemed interesting to me.

I put the Simone down to look at more SB’s because I want to start drinking more whites this year. So as I investigate the stores stash, I gather some South Africa and New Zealand Sb’s. Now, my hands are in all kinds of bins and my hands and arms start to get full of bottles all of a sudden somehow. I decide it might be best to rush to the counter before I keep collecting and also don’t want my grip to start to loosen on all the bottles. I don’t want to be the guy in the store that drops a bottle(s) and everyone stares and says “what the hell are you carrying like eight bottles for you greedy jerk lush”!

I make it to the counter gladly and proudly that I didn’t drop any of the unexpected accumulation of bottles but at the same time a little embarrassed of the amount that I was able to carry in a pinch.;) Being a little frazzled, I pay and hope I just picked up some good QPR’s. I go home after food shopping and look for the Chile Sauvignon Blanc but it’s not there. I look and look but I realize in all that octopus frenzy I duplicated a NZ bottle pickup instead of getting the Simone.

A little disappointed I misgrabbed the Simone because I was in the mood to try a Chile SB again. It’s been a longtime since I had one from there. Now, a little more disappointed after watching your review on it. Wanted to see my comparison with yours too.

I guess I have to go back and get it now. Hopefully, I can escape with just that purchase and no repeat of last Friday.:)

GV!! Firstly, I THOROUGHLY loved the episode you shot at home…and especially the “special guest” appearence!! Safe to say, I’m seeing plenty of family resemblences…Remember, I’m DEFINITELY the first “Vayniac” to ever have met you in person! Onto some wine notes…I havent had the pleasure of tasting the Simone SB, but needless to say I have found several other Chilean Sauv Blancs in that price range which have “wowed” my palate & brought some thunder. As far as the Nobilo, our palates agree for the most part. To me, it’s well made, but a rather pedestrian new zealand SB. Off the top of my head, I can easily think of nearly a dozen others which are less expensive, yet pack much more intrigue. As far as Tolosa products…Edna Chard we agree. BORING! I actually find it rather hot on the finish and I also feel that it’s very one dimensional. However, Tolosa does make an unoaked chard…I havent tasted the latest vintage, but i truly did enjoy the 2006. They also make a Pinot which for $14-$15 was rather nice…Check them out if you get the opportunity, my friend. Many blessings to the family as always…

Argh, Gary. I love watching your show. I’ve learned a lot through it, but I’m starting to get discouraged. Whenever I see a deal I might be interested in trying for myself, it’s nearly impossible to find. I live in a dry county in Kentucky and the closest wine merchant is a half hour drive from my house. But even when I go, it’s hard to find the wine I saw on Thunder Show, and the price point down here is usually higher anyway. I wish our legislature would change the wine laws so Wine Library could ship me some vino straight to my home. Sorry for the rant, but that Simone on the show is the perfect example of what I’m talking about.

QOTD= Last Chance Harvey….good movie about life and the people around you.

    Synopsis:
New Yorker Harvey Shine is on the verge of losing his dead-end job as a jingle writer. Warned by his boss that he has just one more chance to deliver, Harvey goes to London for a weekend to attend his daughter’s wedding but promises to be back on Monday morning to make an important meeting–or else. Harvey arrives in London only to learn his daughter has chosen to have her stepfather walk her down the aisle instead of him. Doing his best to hide his devastation, he leaves the wedding before the reception in hopes of getting to the airport on time, but misses his plane anyway. When he calls his boss to explain, he is fired on the spot. Drowning his sorrows at the airport bar, Harvey strikes up a conversation with Kate, a slightly prickly, 40-something employee of the Office of National Statistics. Kate, whose life is limited to work, the occasional humiliating blind date and endless phone calls from her smothering mother, is touched by Harvey, who finds himself energized by her intelligence and compassion. The growing connection between the pair inspires both as they unexpectedly transform one another’s lives.

    About Tolosa…

I can’t buy that specific chardonnay and vintage because they don’t sell it in any stores here in Finland.

BUT, what I can say from my experience is that you should never taste oaky chardonnay after couple of dry sauvignon blancs. It just doesn’t taste right.

Sauvignon blanc attacks your palate with young acid and fruityness – and after that all most any Chardonnay will be a boring experience. It alters your palate and kills all balance of the wine.

Actually I’d like to challenge you to try out this theory.
