QOTD 1: I’m not sure… maybe if I play NHL 2009 or something, coz I got into hockey in 2002 when I was playing that game, but fell off immediately after.
QOTD 2: Flask of Laphroiag 15 YO, or for desperate times, a $10 stadium beer (I prefer the former rather than the latter)

Im gonna try the Punto Final, just as a reference for when you say “blueberry, fake, etc.”
I think its funny that no matter whos with you on the show..what teams they like, what sport theyre hot for..you STILL keep those Jets spit buckets on hand! LOL xox

    QOTD 1: Hhhmmm…..mix wine tasting w/hockey? :)
QOTD 2: I usually sneak in my favorite wine of the moment, (OR Vodka!) where ever I go..

Maybe I’ll see you at afterparty?

QOTD#1 If I could see the puck on tv it would help. I’m not gonna put out a couple grand for a big screen HD tv at this point for Hockey. Maybe for tennis cause I can’t see the fuzzy ball sometimes.
QOTD#2 I usually mix it up at big games. A little Cabernet, beer and a shot or two of some good scotch.
Good show, not so good wines.

Great show, love the oddity guests and your reaction to bad wine.

QOTD 1: I used to be bigger fan, had Ranger season tickets once in 1993. They didn’t make the play-offs. I did manage to sneak my way into game 7 1994 though. My answer is to make the season as 3 mini seasons, in a format that we have play-off hockey all year long. Mini play-off series in each of the first 2 mini-seasons, leading to placement in the final play-off. There is nothing like play-off hockey.
    QOTD 2: Coca-Cola

Gary – that is one creaky chair you were sitting in today. I was concerned it was going to break when you leaned back at the end of the show.

QOTD1: I live in DC and I have never been into hockey… UNTIL the Caps made the playoffs last year. I went to my 1st NHL game this fall and now I’m hooked!!! I ended up going to 4 games this year, including playoff game 2 vs Penguins when Ovechkin and Crosby each had hat tricks. An absolute INCREDIBLE game!!!!! Hockey is so exciting live, if you can just convince people to go to see a game, they will enjoy it

QOTD2: The biggest beer they have. Although, my newest move has been drinking wine at pretty much every event possible. Recently I have drank wine at Richmond NASCAR race and the Phish concert in Camden, NJ.

    GV the wine tasting coach!

QOTD 1 — loved it in the early 70s, haven’t been to a game since an exhibition in Orlando in 1990! I guess it would have to be more available and I would need more time!

QOTD 2 — whatever draft there is

    O Canada!

    The canadian contingency representin’!

Hey I’m from Québec, Canada, about a half hour from Cowansville…
Too bad the apple wine sucked. Luckily we had to great chaps representing us.

QOTD: Personally, I find most major sports, kinda like the music industry, have lost touch with the art of playing. The product seems so diluted in a sea of advertisement that I find it hard to appreciate pop culture for its lack of genuine enthusiasm. I always wonder if the players are working or playing…

    Ciao!

Great show Gary LOVED the random old school hockey name dropping. The Nordiques were killer in NHL 94 with Sakic, Sundin and Nolan on the top line.

QOTD1 – Love the sport already but bring another team to Ontario
    QOTD2 – Beer!

    Keep it up, more hockey!

QOTD #1: I am a hockey fan but I’d be a much bigger one if we had an NHL team in Seattle

QOTD #2: During the last hockey game I attended, the stadium was giving away free Budwieser energy drinks they were testing out. We had a lot of them. They tasted terrible but it was a great game. I’m going with that.

  21. June 16, 2009

    David Dadekian

QOTD 1: I do enjoy hockey, but I don’t like it much on TV and going to games is out of control expensive. We get up to the Boston Garden occasionally but the overall experience isn’t great.

QOTD 2: Guinness if they have it, otherwise water.

  22. June 16, 2009

    castello

I usually agree with Sam above. Sports are so advertised and the season is sooooo long. It’s still very expensive to go to a game. Parking is a ripoff, etc.etc. I could be home watching WLTV!

  23. June 16, 2009

    Slushpuppy

I’m an old hockey fan since before the expansion when I think the game was alot more exciting. Especially the Chicago Blackhawks with ‘the golden jet’, Bobby Hull, Stan Miketa, and goalie, Glen Hall. Now that was HOCKEY! Oh yes I almost forgot to mention Nesterinko. Too bad we need passports to visit our friends to the north; may I see your papers please.

    Jeff S.

    Woah woah woah!

Maybe I haven’t been watching long enough… and… I mean… I probably would have guessed you as such… But, for me, it was a refreshing revalation to hear that you are big into fantasy sports, Gary. I mean, the wines were cool (that Malbec sounds good), but I was waiting for you to tell us the details of the trade.

When are you starting up the WLTV Fantasy Football League?

QOTD: I live real close to the HP Pavilion in San Jose, and have been to quite a few Sharks games over the years, but I would not consider myself a hockey fan. To me, the problem is that the badass action of live hockey gets lost in translation on TV. Maybe the digital transition will fix that…

QOTD2: At the games, I drink plastic pints of Coors Light.

  25. June 16, 2009

    Pittsburgh Alex

    Let’s Go Pens

QTOD1: I’m a Hockey Fan, but the NHL needs to get off Versus and back onto ESPN even for less money so that the sport can reach more homes and grow. Also, they need to stop scheduling the Final up against the NBA Finals. Right now the NHL is going to lose that battle. I allow love watching the Olympics because of the Big Ice. That may be just because that it is something different rather than an Improvement for the NHL.

    QTOD2: I.C. Light

QOTD#1: Stop all the fights. I dont understand it. I pretty much dislike hockey for that very reason….they are supposed to be adults on the ice, not little freakin kids.
QOTD#2: I would love to have some cider if I went to a Hockey game.
    Thanks for the show!

I enjoyed the fact that the show seemed to be how most of us drink wine – sitting around, chatting about sports, friendships, etc – then commenting on the wine – Great Show….

QOTD – reduce the price of admission to a game….

QOTD = reduce the price of drinks at the games….

Nice show eh! Unfortunately they had a gazillion pinots to choose from downstairs and you ended up with the alcohol bomb.

QOTD #1: I’m a huge fan as it is but am guessing it may take a quick visual tutorial at the beginning of the game to explain the rules to the new fans. Of course, if they go to a “live” game, they will be hooked.

QOTD #2: If I’m in a suite, wine of course. If I’m out in the regular seats with the riff-raff, Diet Coke. I don’t do crap like Bud Light.

    Cheerio!

Gary I am loving these hockey theamed shows! Gueat guests!

QTOD 1- I am a huge Caps fan. Give the Caps the Fenway game against Boston this year. I went to the Jan. 16th game this year at Verizon. It was great. They are the two best teams in the east and only getting better. Who wouldnt want to see Ovie v. Thomas on new years day?!

QTOD 2- Jan. 16th was a day after my birthday. I have never really like the Hook and Ladder IPA, but it was great on tap! IPA is an essential hockey beer!

Gary – that is the loudest chair in the world. When you leaned back to solicit the QOTDs, it was crackling like a fire. :D

QOTD1: Not much. I do like hockey, i just don’t get around to watching sports on TV.

QOTD2: Drink of choice is a good ol’ bottle of water. Boring huh? :(

Great show as always. Now I have a Canadian show to watch about hockey.

QOTD1: Living in Montreal, its almost a religion to be a habs fan.

QOTD1…please make the hockey season end in April. Does it really need to be played in June? Isn’t June a summer month.

QOTD2…Ice cold lemonade. What else does one drink at a hockey game in June?

  37. June 16, 2009

    Larry R

Oh my poor ill-fated Sharks. What a lousy way for them to finish what was easily the best season in franchise history. I’m still a little bitter about it. Nice that you mentioned Owen Nolan too. Cool!

Great show and great guests Gary. Just one thing, and I know it’s been mentioned before, but I have to say it – Kirsch and Kir Royale are two different drinks. There is no Kirsch Royale. I only mention it because Kirschwasser is cherry-flavored and Kir Royale is cassis-flavored so I get a little confused on your tasting notes.

QOTD 1: I already love hockey but I can’t seem to get anyone else interested in it so I’m the wrong guy to ask.

QOTD 2: Beer. Even the 8 dollar swill they serve at the Shark Tank will do.

Big hockey fan. Probably my favorite sport.
A little disappointed with my Caps this season, but look out, we’re coming on.
[I mean, come on, after watching hockey.......
who could like baseball, or basketball, or, (oh yeah) football for that matter].
Would like to find a decent ice wine to try, (don’t really know why though).
Will skip the Winter Gold Apple.

  42. June 16, 2009

    Tooch

The NHL needs to shorten the season and shift the playoffs to May. If they continue trying to compete with the NBA playoffs they’ll continue to flounder.
Exposing playoff hockey to the masses is the best way to shift the perception of the NHL. I would also take franchises away from Phoenix, Florida, and other non-hockey cities and award some to cities like Quebec City, Cleveland, or Hartford along with contracting one or two.

When I’m at hockey games, I try to stick to local microbrews.

  43. June 16, 2009

    Jack

QOTD 1: I think “Big Hockey” needs to advertise the fact that you can actually see the puck when you watch games in HD. This totally changes the viewing experience for someone like me, an occasional viewer.

    QOTD 2: Giant-sized Beers

This episode was fun! It was interesting to see Gary wanting to impress the brothers with his hockey knowledge.

    Great show GV!
QOTD1: I really like going to hockey games, but not watching them on t.v., maybe more primetime games on espn.

    QOTD2: flavored lemonades

Thanks for bringing the Thunder as always, and who is the new intern you have there?

  56. June 16, 2009

    Mike

Loved this episode! Hockey is my favorite sport so it was great to see some hockey talk for a change. My drink of choice at games is typically a good Canadian beer like Molson.

  57. June 16, 2009

    Boozer

Great show and keep the hockey angle going.

QOTD 1: I am a hockey fan but being a good old southern boy from Alabama, well lets say I did not grow up on the sport. All it took for me was going to one game. I was hooked! So get to that first game, not on TV, in person.

QOTD 2: Our local arena’s drink selection is CRAP, I think it is what ever the distributor is dumping this week. When choice is available Molson Canadian after all it is hockey and if in Canada I try to find a Brador. Got hooked on that a few years back!

  58. June 16, 2009

    David T (@ONUMello)

I’ve only seen hard cider, interesting they make it into a dessert wine too.

QOTD1: I work security at the Columbus Blue Jackets’ arena, so I like them, but don’t make a point to watch much hockey otherwise… it’s probably just because I’m such a big football fan.

QOTD2: The drinking fountain, because everything else in an arena is too damn expensive!

  59. June 17, 2009

    Michael Clark

QOTD #1: I think ‘that’ section of the newspaper should say ‘Sports’ during football season and ‘Other’ the rest of the year so I don’t think much could be done to get me to watch hockey.

QOTD #2: At a Montana Grizzly football game on a cold day: Baileys & Starbucks in a thermos.

  60. June 17, 2009

    Platopoker

    Good show!

QTD1: I grew up playing and watching hockey in Minnesota but lost interest after moving to Arizona. Would love to see more games on ESPN, ESPN2, and other large Network channels. Also, I believe those who don’t watch hockey on a regular basis would appreciate a better way to see the puck on TV (i.e. digital enhancement or better camera angles). The game is definitely much better watched in person.

QTD2: An nice cold import beer, most likely a Heineken.

  61. June 17, 2009

    Kell Brigan

Hm. Y’know, I have a bit of a sweet tooth, but I think even I’d prefer a hard cider to the ice wine. Interesting that it’s from Quebec and has a monstrance on the front. Maybe that’s what Fr. Roland’s been using for Mass lately. Definitely a sweetish white…

QOTD #1: Meanwhile, not a hockey fan. What would get me into it — fully clothed women over forty and men who are head-over-heels in love with their wives in the beer ads? Meanwhile, here’s some required listening: http://m.podshow.com/media/406/episodes/14722/celtic-14722-07-19-2006.mp3. The cut you want’s right at 18 minutes. No, really. It’s funny.

QOTD #2: Favorite beverage at Monarch’s or King’s games is the soda I snuck in in my purse. Favorite beverage at the Scottish Games is water, followed by a Guinness.

  62. June 17, 2009

    oscar falcón lara

    Go Bruins! ( I’m for them ).

Nice to see hockey fans on the thunder show. You had a very cool rapport, a quite nice back and forth between the three.

Ice Apple wine, I’ve never had it, must taste like Norwegian cider if you get cinnamon; you’ve just given me something to look for.

QOTD 1: Keep doing what you’re doing, Hockey is great!

QOTD 2: I’ve only been to a Professional hockey game once in my life (Toronto), the rest I follow through Sports channels, drinks cover the range from beers to wines and spirits, oh, and lots of food and snacks.

    Good Show.

  63. June 17, 2009

    Christopher Scoggin

Very fun episode. Not heavy on the wine info but enjoyable to watch none the less.

QOTD1: Sorry, but nothing. I don’t dislike hokey any more than anything else, just not a sport fan period.

    QOTD2: Water or Diet Cola/Pop/Soda

  64. June 17, 2009

    ChrisNY2

QOTD1: Hockey isn’t that exciting to watch on TV, but I was into college hockey during my years at BU (national champs 09!).
QOTD2: Usually go with a lemonade, not spending $16 for a decent beer at yankee stadium.

  65. June 17, 2009

    Jaton

This is off topic, and yes I did watch your episode, and of course it was great like always. But I’m curious, I’ve been tasting Pinot Noir from all over the world. Lately I’ve been trying Pinots from Argentina, and for some reason, I don’t know, most of the ones I’ve been tasting seem a lot heavier on the palate than most pinots(for example the Mariflor 2005 Pinot Noir from Mendoza that I’m tasting right now). Also it displays other characteristics as if it’s blended with something else other than Pinot Noir. My question is, have you heard of some Argentinean Vineyard blending a little Syrah in with their Pinot Noir?

Keep doing what you do Gary, I’ll continue to watch and support,

    Jaton

QOTD1: Not an issue, I’m in Detroit, Go Wings get them next year. (And Bettman sucks!)
QOTD2: Usually a Molson; you’ve got to drink a Canadian beer. I love the Labatt Blue too.

Too bad about the PHX move to Hamiton. Hope it still happens we need more teams north of the border.

Yo Canadian beer dudes. Do you still get Yukon Gold there. I remember it was so tasty back in the late seventies or 80’s. Back then Molson and Moosehead had at least some flavor. They seem rather weak these days in California. That could be my palate changed but can you suggest some more flavorfull beers from north of the big ass border? eddwestat comcastnet

  69. June 17, 2009

    Richie

QOTD 1: Well first of all it would be a great move if one could watch hockey- games from Amerika here in Germany. That would be a start.
QOTD 2: As I have never visited a hockeygame I can’t say. But wine would be kind of nice. Not a traditional sportsdrink but why not make it so?

  70. June 17, 2009

    Jerry

    Neat diversion to hockey talk.

QOTD 1: I wish for the days of more finesse (european-style) hockey. Flame me if you like, but we’ll never see another graceful player, a la Gretzky, with the enforcer mentality. Gretzky inspired a generation with skill. On a separate note, in the interests of seeing the puck easier, I wonder if the rink boards could be made of transparent material so fans could still see the action along the boards nearest them.

QOTD 2: Water; drinks are too expensive.

  71. June 17, 2009

    G

Q1. I really like hockey better on a minute to minute action basis than any of the other big pro sports in the US, problem is, it is the one sport I never played. So I lose the “I know what that feels like” thing I get when I see a blocked shot or a good open field tackle. Other problem was in the last stanley cup game, it really looked like detroit was outplaying pittsburg early and got nothing, then a couple bang bang plays and the game is over. The low scoring aspect of the games is a problem. i nother sports 98-88, 35-17 and even 7-2 and I know who dominated, but 2-1 with a couple shots off the crossbar, hrmm.

    Q2. A Saison.

  72. June 17, 2009

    C-Lo

Hubba hubba GV! Two days of hottie McHotterson guests – I am a happy lady! Clearly I need to be heading north more often to hang out with these Canadians. :) Fun show; you three had a good rapport. I like what you did there, constantly getting affirmed for your hockey references. Well done.

QOTD 1: I’ve never been much of a hockey watcher. The Notre Dame team was always good while I was in school, so I watched them but other than that I don’t really watch. Not for a lack of effort on the hockey world to reel in another fan mind you, I just don’t get into it.

QOTD 2: I’m going to generalize the question to favorite beverage at a game and I’m gonna go with my non-thinking beer of choice – a good ol’ Miller Lite.

    Keep it real.

  73. June 17, 2009

    Ryan D

QotD1: You’re gonna hate me, but I don’t like the fighting. I like Olympic hockey better than NHL hockey because the game is quicker paced and there’s less thug mentality.

    QotD2: Beer!

  74. June 17, 2009

    Justin Kennedy

Hey Saint John boys, nice show! It was fun to watch.

QOTD #1: This may be sacrilegious coming from a Canadian hockey fan, but I find 4 on 4 hockey MUCH more exciting to watch. More open ice, more scoring (that’s what the Americans want right?). I can see how the scrums along the boards, and “the trap” can bore new viewers.

I also agree with other comments that the season is too long and won’t be able to compete with the NBA playoffs. I remember when I lived in Seattle, we didn’t have cable in our house so when the playoffs were on, I’d have to go to a sports bar to catch it. Well, guess what? EVERYONE was watching basketball.

QOTD #2: Fav drink is Root Beer. If I’m in the mood, then it has to be Scotch on the rocks.

    Cheers,
    -Justin

    Fun episode.

QOTD1: I’ve actually had this conversation with my good friend that is a huge hockey fan. This may sound silly, but here it goes: Either get rid of the goalie or make the goal net bigger. My friend told me that getting rid of the goalie would be ridiculous because they are sometimes the best part of the game, so I guess just make the net bigger to increase the scoring.

    QOTD2: Beer. Usually Miller Lite.

Funniest thing about this episode was the look on GVs face when he changed it up at the end to say that we are changing the hockey world. I laughed. But the corny joke and the look of satisfaction, like you just said the funniest thing in the world was priceless.
Good show. We could feel the brotherly love through the screen. Tough wines though. If you are 8 for 10 on Malbec, then is the delicious factor outshining the lack of complexity or is Malbec just an easy grape to grow and vinify?
QOTD1: I am back into hockey after my blackhawks have disappointed for so long, we had a great run this year with a young and talented team of future stars!! Ran into the buzzsaw of the yankeeske detroit redwings. Rocky Wertz was just the answer for us chicagoans. Young talent and winning is the only thing that gets nonhockey fans to be drawn to the sport… pure and simple.
QOTD2: I am a firm believer that sports = beer.

  78. June 17, 2009

    Lawrence Leichtman

Fairly poor wine showing for this show. A little better directing of guests that come in and select wine at the store would help. I can’t stand hockey and never could but I grew up in the southwest and if it wasn’t football or baseball, we didn’t care about watching any other team sports. I like a Samuel Adams at the local Norfolk Tides games.

That was fun – but i would have preferred hearing the boys talk a little more – favorite teams, favorite players, impressions from this last season, thoughts on next season – another minute or two for each would have added some more hockey love.

QOTD 1 – love ice hockey. College and NHL – go Rangers and Cornell Big Red

QOTD 2 – depends on the other circumstances (where are we, what time is it)

Great show, GV, but don’t you dare talk trash about my hockey team! The Nordiques were a great team, I saw them beat the Devils a couple of times in the late 80’s (when I was about 8), and beat the Canadiens in the playoffs in overtime. We’re still hoping to get our team back here in Quebec City.

Which brings me to QOTD1: The league needs to get a team in Quebec City fast! The only reason I stopped paying attention is the lack of a local team.

QOTD2: A brew or a Sprite, coz that’s all they serve in arenas around here.

  83. June 17, 2009

Good guests to have on after the stanley cup finals. Too bad the wine didnt show up as much, but it was cool they picked out the wines.

Must have been rough growing up with your brother beeing a cowboys fan!! Especially after super bowl XXX

QOTD 1: I live close to nashville and even though the predators have been here a while, I just havent got that in to hockey, until this years playoffs. Being a huge steelers fan, I had to route for the Pens! That alone made me a hockey fan! I cant wait until next season, and hope they come here and play the preds. But as far as other ways to get fans I just dont know. I see it being such a regional thing. With all the expansion teams now, maybe the young kids growing up with local teams will expand the NHL fan base? I may have been a hockey fan sooner if we would have had a team here when I was younger.

QOTD 2: I have only been to a few hockey games but during the finals this year, I was enjoying white wines. And I am still on the white wine kick as of late.

That was a really nice show guys, makes me wish I had a brother (not to dis my two sisters)
Also, funny side at 20:09 may be the first time ever that the guests spit and GV doesn’t!

QOTD1: I’ve never been into Hockey I guess because I don’t know that much bout it. I guess I’d enjoy it if I could watch it with someone who could explain the game as it was played…like I did for ladyParyb and football.

QOTD2: Since I don’t watch Hockey, I’ll go with Dallas Cowboys Football! At the stadium, it’s pretty much Miller Light, because it’s only 8 bucks instead of 10 like the Corona. If I’m at home though, Sierra Nevada Pale, or if it’s warm out, New Belgium’s Sunshine Wheat.

QOTD 1: I enjoy the occasional hockey game. I don’t like the fights, so getting rid of them would help me become a more regular fan. Hockey is such a great skill game. Why ruin it with thuggery?

QOTD 2: I drink Diet Coke at sporting events. I’d take a good hard cider if one were around. I’m not a beer drinker. Wine just doesn’t work at the actual game. I’ll drink wine if I’m catching the game at home, though.

  88. June 17, 2009

Good show. I’ll definitely check the hockey zen tv show.I’ve tasted some great apple ice cider from the same province, Qc. And i’ve never heard about this apple ice wine. I really don’t think this ice wine is representative of the quality of the ice wine or cider we make here. We make pretty good vidal ice wine here. L’orpailleur is a very good one. La face cachée de la pomme(the hidden face of the apple) is a great apple ice wine, among others.

QOTD 1: If we would have playoffs like we had this year every year, i think that hockey would be much popular than it is now in the states. I’m a huuuuugggggeeee hockey fan!!

QOTD2: beer, ’cause that’s all they’ve got!! And i enjoy it. What i’ve had in the past also replacing beer and chips during a game on tv at home, espacially when the playoff season gets in the month of june, is vinho verde with olives. You can have almost as much as beer, it’s a bit fizzy and very refreshing and low in alcool. Not the expensive ones, the cheap ones but decent quality. 7 or 8 $

QOTD 1: Being from Canada originally, I love hockey. However, I now live in California and I don’t really think there’s much one can do to make it much more popular in the parts of the the USA where kids don’t grow up playing the game. It’s just not a part of the culture here. None of the best athletes play it as kids down here. I actually think the league needs to lose a bunch of teams in places like Pheonix and Florida. No one cares about the teams there. Move them either to Canada or the northeast/midwest of the USA. Bettman trying to keep the Coyotes in Pheonix is just stupid. Let ‘em move to Hamilton. It’s only just. They stole them from Winnipeg in the first place.
QOTD 2: Beer. What else would you drink?

Gary, why do you continue to have people on your show who don’t know jack about wine? Hearing two quiet guys who just go “meh” to every question of yours gets VERY boring. I love the show, but I think you’re better off sticking to guests who can hold their own when it comes to the vino. The college humor guys knew their wine better than these two canucks…

QOTD#1: The recent finals reminded me: get rid of the mindless brawling and cheap shots and the sport is gorgeous, fast and extremely exciting. The fighting makes a game slower than the last minute of a playoff basketball game which comes close to defining infinity it can last so long.

Good show, Gary! Forget what the haters say, I think it’s fine to have two seemingly good guys on the show who are passionate about hockey and enjoy wine even though they may not be sommeliers.

QOTD 1: Give me a National team in Portland, OR that I can support. I’ve always loved the Penguins, but it’s tough to stay an avid fan of a sport that’s not that embraced on the west coast, by National television, and when you have no local presence/team. Sure, if I had all the time in the world, but my jar is only this big and only allows this many rocks in it. (get that analogy)

QOTD 1 – They would have to find a way to make the entire season as exciting as the playoffs. Otherwise there’s just too much going on in all my other favorite sports (football, basketball, european soccer, baseball) for me to try and follow hockey. I try to dive in once the playoffs start though, Go Ducks!

QOTD #1 – Hockey lost me after the strike. If managment and players are so greedy, they do not need my money.

    Brock

Awesome show Gary, I enjoyed the light banter between the brothers. Reminded me a bit of myself and my younger brother :)

QOTD 1: Being Canadian you’re just expected to love hockey (I actually am a bigger baseball fan), but I would definitely be interested in watching your show if you did interviews with past hockey legends, current “up-and-coming” stars (even OHL kids – I train a couple) and even hockey announcers, writers, agents, and trainers (I’d be interested in being a guest :)

Could an episode #100 Goal be to interview Don Cherry? :)

QOTD 2: I would drink wine at a hockey game if there were choices other than over-priced crap (yellowtail). Creemore Springs Lager at the Leafs game is about the only beer I can justify paying $15 a pint for.

  112. June 18, 2009

Hey Gary – great to meet you last night (me=chick in the red hat) at Lucky Strike, it was a pleasure. Congratulations on a great appearance.

QOTD 1: I would definitely watch more hockey if all games were as exciting as game 7 was last week. Loved it.

QOTD 2: Blue Moon is my current beer of choice whenever I’m in a beer-drinking mood, which tends to be the case at sporting events.

    Nice show GV!

Those bros act a lot like me and my bro! Like you an AJ as well.
That Argentinean Malbec must be the best of the 2 reds.
There is another black label Punto Final in my cellar, I’m going to have a go soon, must be a good wine too.

If you like Argentinean Malbec, you should try the Yacochuya 2004 (90% Malbec, 10% Cab), one of the best Malbecs I had in my life. And it’s not from Mendoza, but from the very high altitude province of Salta. It’s gonna Crush It! :)

    QOTD1: Not available. :(
QOTD2: In football matches down here, a cold beer.

    Best wishes,

Rather “meh” show, for me. No real theme other than “two hockey fans from Canada pick random wines”.

QOTD 1: I am not really a hockey fan, but I do often watch some of the play-off games. I have to admit they can be pretty exciting. If you wanted to get me to be a hockey fan, put an NHL team in Cleveland where I live.

QOTD 2: Doesn’t really apply, since I don’t go to hockey games, but I imagine it would be a beer – probably Labatt’s.

  117. June 18, 2009

    Kirk

What a great show…I really liked the guests they have good humor and were a nice change from the “norm”. As for the

QOTD#1: I think that if tickets were not as expensive, or if concessions were not as expensive I would probably pay attention more to the sport. I went to the first two play off games in Canada back in 2008 and the third game in Boston with an uncle. It was a great time…but his cost to such an event was beyond what I could or would spend my own money on. So if the cost was lower, I would be more likely to go to games…if I went to more games I would be more likely to follow the games I miss on TV….but I don’t own a TV. Maybe if the entire games were available for streeming and free download I would be more likely to follow the sport…just a few thoughts.

QOTD#2: I will usually look for a beer like Sam Adams, Newcastel, or Heineken….

  118. June 18, 2009

    Jayhitek

    Funny episode. Good guests Aye.
    QOTD1: Go Bruins!
QOTD2: Any kind of sporting event has to be beer. It’s the only think that goes great with sausages, hotdogs, peanuts, popcorn, pretzels. Except the new Garden – TD Bank North does offer a lot in mixed drinks and fancy foods.. So.. Jack and Coke? If I got a plastic cup of wine at a Bruins game I would get the crap kicked out of me. Rightfully so.

  119. June 18, 2009

    MattieJ

Wow, these boys grew up just a few hours from me… I’m a Miramichi native myself, have an uncle that lives in SJ, NB. Poor bastards have to deal with NBLC to get their wine.. My brother has to contend with it, he hates it, costs too much and limited availability. Dude on the right reminds me of a cross behind Sean Avery and Ty Domi.

My younger brother was a Canadiens fan… I basically rooted for whoever was playing them Saturday night on Hockey Night in Canada… My dad was a Leafs fan, so I took the same approach :-) … I was a Calgary Flames fan growing up, then turned to full blown Pens fan when I moved to Pittsburgh.. Did I mention we just won the Cup!!! GO PENS!!

QOTD #1: Huge hockey fan, so question one doesn’t apply

QOTD #2: I stick to diet coke at the game.

  123. June 18, 2009

    ex-lurkdawg

To be frank, I’m not a sports fan at all and did not like this episode. I thought the guests were more interested in self-promotion than wine. I can’t answer either of the QOTD’s.

Loved this episode, like one commenter said, felt like I was hanging out with friends tasting wine and talking sports.

QOTD1: Figure out a way to make winter sports popular and relevant in the South. Hockey just doesn’t do well in the hot and humid southwestern Tennessee!!

QOTD2: At Tennessee Titans games I love getting a Blue Moon complete with an orange slice. (I’m girly when it comes to beer – I’m mostly a wine girl.)

  125. June 19, 2009

    RT

QOTD 1: I used to be a HUGE hockey fan, but the NHL lost me in the 2000’s with the sloppy play, the ineffective rule changes, the expansion, and then the lockout. To get me back? First, fire Bettman and bring someone competent in would go a LONG way. Second, contract 4-6 teams. The last round of expansion should never have happened because the talent is just absurdly diluted now. The NHL needs to reverse out that error. Third, move a couple teams back to Canada. There’s no reason Winnipeg, Hamilton, and Quebec shouldn’t have teams. Finally, reduce the goalie pads to what they were back in the 80’s and 70’s. That, more than anything, will give scoring chances the excitement they deserve.

QOTD 2: Good beer or Diet Coke.

  126. June 19, 2009

    Leigha33w

1999 1st game of Jets season you cried….maybe you cried because in that game against the PATRIOTS Testaverde blew out his achilles and they did end of losing….But you did not cry because they lost to the 49rs on a 90 yard run or whatever…as that is not possible. Keepin it real.
