Always love the flip cam episodes. This one gets a 90 just for the egg-white nuggett of information alone.

  • Dig the seriousness, and am always glad to have Bordeaux checked out on your dime!!!
QOTD: Despite your advice, I’ve been buying 00, 01, and 05 still from the right bank, so can’t speak much to 04.

QOTD-Gary, I hearken back to episode #250 when you did my all time Favorite Napa Cab…The 2004 Turnbull estate Cabernet Sauvignon. I have only 6 bottles left in the cellar and am both ecstatic and heart-broken each time I open one!

QOTD For me its got to be the Barolos I bought En Primeur a year or so ago. I cant wait to try them as and when they are ready. By all accounts one of the best Piedmont vintages.

Cant wait to see the change in the La Mission. Im betting you like it much more….

Re Adrian Van Velsons comment. When I hear someone describe La Conseillante as a ” small wine ” I know Im living on another planet. By small does he mean the size of the bottle perhaps ??? It cant be the price methinks….

I got very lucky and tried the ’04 Haut Brion – not the Mission, the straight Chateau:

It had breathed for about 4 hours – we compared it against Opus 1 at the same time (I’m a lucky, lucky guy), my thoughts for what they’re worth:

The ’04 Hot-Brian was one of the best wines I’ve ever had in my life, massive transitions, buttered toast, fruit, some funk, some vegetal stuff … an absolute roller-coaster of big transitions and a massive finish.

“Oh, that’s what Bordeaux is supposed to taste like, that’s why people go nuts about it” is what went through my mind, I get it – I just can’t afford it. I’d give it a 96 or a 97, it was just stupid good, complex, big, interesting, and damn tasty – I wish everybody had a chance to try this stuff – its not a mystery or anything, it’s like a really incredible foreign dish you’ve never had before, but you’ve been hearing about for a very long time and you finally get to try it, and you really, really like it – unfortunately it’s so expensive not many folks get the chance.

Oh, sorry, the Opus ? it was quite good, a number of people even liked it better, but for me, as good as it was, it had nowhere near the complexity and roller coaster of transitions of the Bordeaux.

It’s a shame that experience is going to be so rarified from here on in, and at about $400 a bottle – unless you’re really high rolling – an incredible, romantic dinner for two would probably be a better place for your money.

  • Great job on Late Night… I got the sense that Jimmy was really respectful of you as well as a fan. Rad!

QOTD: 2004 was a filled with change for me. I had just moved out of my folk’s place and was in my own place all alone and started a new job at a large tech company. Exciting and scary to say the least. I was still drinking predominantly white wine at that time and favored the Vouvray and Pinot Gris/Grigios. Still like them, but if I’m driking it’s red now.

GV- Check out the Malbec from “Terrazza”. It’s $9 and really drinkable. Tip: grill up a burger at home with some gruyere cheese and stick it between a ciabatta instead of hamburger wines, open a bottle of that Malbec. Game Over.

    Thanks for all you do!

  • Like the one-wine focus and more in-depth information (I’m a card-carrying wine nerd), especially the vine age nugget. Would love to hear that more when you know it.

(also funny to hear all the Misha and Lizzy sounds in the background)

QOTD: 2004 makes me think of our awesome vacation in Maui.

Yo G, Extremely Interesting Episode, Moooochoooo Thanx!!! How do you
REALLY KNOW that a $115 bottle of Vino like that, that tastes raunchy
NOW, will NOT taste raunchy after it “matures” in a few years????
    Isn’t it a bit of a crap-shot-of-sorts???

qotd: 2004??? Aaaahhhhh, lets see…… A Good Year for Tuscan Vino??….

Re Alex Cussins – missunderstanding: Ch. la Conseillante is not a small wine at all…! My comment was that beside the well known wines such as la conseillante, giscours, cos d’estournel etc. I had a lot of other “smaller” chateaux’ such as escurac, poujeaux, cambon la pelouse or la gurgue and they all where “classic Bordeaux”.

When Gary says 2004, I think of graduating from college, the New England Patriots winning their second Super Bowl, and the Boston Red Sox finally winning a World Series after 86 years

Gary — Enjoyed the show quite a bit. I read through the comments and 100% agree focusing on a single wine and bringing the wine nerd thunder was a great change of pace!!! Interesting to hear your thoughts on the 2004 Bordeaux and their value PLAY relative to 2005. Also, I disagree with Jason Carey and don’t think you overuse the word “play”. It’s YOUR wine lingo and one of many things that distinguish you in the wine world!!!

QOTD: Recent research has shown the empirical evidence for globalization of
corporate innovation is very limited. And as a corollary, the market
for technologies is shrinking. As a world leader, it is important for America to provide systematic research grants for our scientists. I believe there will always be a need for us to have a well-articulated innovation policy with emphasis on human resource development. Thank you. [applause]

    Where’d that come from?

    What happened? I blacked out.

I think about The Passion of the Christ.

Nice little show. I don’t see how you could determine a real score for this wine given its youth. 2004? I have a lot of 2000’s that are just starting to be reasonable after several hours of decanting.

QOTD: 2004? Well, I remember it for two very different reasons: 1) I visited Bordeaux which was great, and 2) My youngest nephew died at the age of 30 from a rare form of cancer. It was a very difficult time for my family.
