    Woo Wooo!!!

QOTD: the most nerdy thing I’ve done this year……sit around and home and hit refresh waiting for the next WLTV!!! -have to admit, that ranks pretty high on the scale of dorkdom!

WHITE LICORICE? Never heard of it.
How about talking a little more about the Sake play? Read some comments or something.
Waiting for WLTV, like Adam said, is one of the nerdier things us Vayniacs can’t tell our friends about.
Also drinking some of the Portugeuse wines you yak about. The Quinta Vale D. Maria I had the other night brought the THUNDER! Followed by a big ass Cali Cab from A. Rafanelli. You should try it.

Just watched pt2 of the sake, and found this easter egg up. Beau was very good. Alwasys love the educational aspect of WLTV.

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL that was the best glass of wine you’ve EVER poured!

QOTD:Hmmmmm…probably put my whole wine inventory onto a webtise for tracking. And that’s for everything I’ve done this year not just wine/food related.

QOTD: Nerdiest thing I’ve done so far this year? Hmm, probably buying and reading new Star Wars books…The Dork is strong with this one!

    Thanks GV,
Champagne is white and made from Pinot Noir, right? So was this like a non-fizz Champagne?

    Nerdiest thing?
Probably telling all my peeps about WLTV and Top Gear on BBC America.

That’s how every episode should start… Just off the back of “the tinternet’s most passionate wine programme…” a full-on ‘winefall’. If ever there was an excuse to give a wine a sniffy sniff, this was it.

One Wine Thursday…8:09….Is this like buying the 375ML instead of the 750ML? 1st time reply and I’m still viewing the back episodes. Love the Thunder Show.

    Zube

I like the shorter episodes, and must break up my viewing of those that are over 30 mins.

So, this puts me in a quandary. I would like to try a white Pinot Noir, but know that the one you highlighted today is not the one. (45 bones pretty much makes it not the one regardless, but the so-so review certainly seals the deal). Maybe when you pan a unique wine like this you could offer one or two suggestions of a decent/good wine of the same varietal.

Has anyone out there found a decent white pinot noir in the under $20 range?

  24. June 25, 2009

    Pittsburgh Alex

Gary you are a Wildman. Making a mess with a $45 wine. Crazy. Can we Light Cigars with some $100 Bills? I do like the nerdiness.

QOTD: Purchased a Lightsaber that lights up and makes the badass sounds. Its not the Bullshit kiddy ones that extend, its like a replica. It rocks hardcore.

Anne Amie does some nice white, including a Muller Thurgau, but something about the staff the day I visited them turned me off of that place.

Great show, will be on the lookout for it.

QOTD: umm…putting my framed & triple matted original Empire Strikes Back poster on the wall in my basement.

Zube: the best I’ve found has been Wyatt Pinot Noir for around $12-14.

  28. June 25, 2009

    DaveyDonut

Interesting indeed… I didn’t know Anne Amie was doing this now… and over 700 cases? That’s totally nuts. Domaine Serene has been doing a white Pinot Noir (”Coeur Blanc”) for a number of years now and it usually gets pretty bad reviews (worse than this), yet costs even more ($70). Just doesn’t seem worth it for the cost of admission. Still, next time I’m visiting the Anne Amie tasting room I’ll definitely inquire about it.

2007 was also a difficult year for Pinot Noir… surprised they made this 14.1% alcohol in this wet year. *shrug*

I knew that white wine (actual white wine, in addition to sparkling) can be made from red grapes but hadn’t actually come across with one so this was a nice ep in that contrast. What also put a smile on my face was the pouring in the beginning =D

I tried several Blanc-de-Noir over the time. Most from Pinot Noir. There is a different flavour-profil, hints of red fruit, that i tend to like, but all in all, they don’t bring the thunder to me.

very interesting….but I have a question about alcohol content….how can it be “controlled”? Is it not just the natural process of the fermentation and the conversion of sugar? Wouldnt the winemaker have to sacrifice the quality or characteristics of the wine somehow by trying to control the alcohol? I would love to hear an explanation on this.

Also, I am curious-if you had tasted today’s wine blind, what would you have guessed?

    oh….and how’s Misha doing?

Love the color on this one — bright like a sauv. blanc, but with a bit of golden warmth to it. Nice. The licorice and minerals (from the tasting notes) might get my cash, but I’d need an unoaked version. Great idea, though.

QOTD: that would be during the 72-hour EEG (results were normal — no big whup), when I was walking around with a big old bandage on my head with a couple dozen wires sticking out of it and hooked up to a backpack thing with blinking green lights. The nerdy part was the technician and I making up things to say to people when they asked me what it was. (Which nobody did. Culture picked a great time to start being polite all of a sudden!) The top two on the list were “You should see the other girl,” and “What? [pause] The aliens! Listen, maybe YOU don’t care about your thought processes, but some of us love America! [said while stomping off].” Darn. I was really hoping to get a chance to use that second one.

I like when you do more than one wine. I still enjoyed the episode, though. I had a white wine made with pinot noir from Germany recently that I thought was quite good and cost much less than the wine you reviewed. Since you’re trying to “nerd it up” with the one wine episode, it might have made sense to mention Champagne. You know why.

qotd: tasting wine in the morning. It’s not out of the ordinary for me, but it is kind of nerdy standing in front of the kitchen sink tasting and spitting wine before work.

Interesting show, love that you try new wines. Missed the comparison to another wine though.

QOTD: oh probably lots of stuff on a daily basis but recent ones include

    - Put my http://www.cellartracker.com spreadsheet into a new Business Intelligence tool called Explorer just to play around with the data and visualize it (yes, I am a sad software nerd)
    - Read a Manga comic about wine!
    - Wine tasting; Tried Granache Blanc, Granache Rose (the grape not the wine style) and zero dosage “ultra brut” champagne. The Granache Rose was the only wine that was a pazz.
    - had withdrawls with the WL forums were down!!

    Hey Gary,
I met the next Gary Vaynerchuk on Monday at the US Open. The parking situation on Long Island was terrible, so this 13 yr old kid saw a business opportunity and rented out all the driveways in his neighborhood to the fans. Then he organized all the parents on the street to drive people to the course. The kid was a pure hustler and rumor has it, he pulled in over $3000 and lined up an internship over the summer. Not too bad for five days work. Maybe when your ready to hang it up in 20+ years you can look him up.

GV, There you go again pouring wine out like a F-ing low life. This crap doesn’t work anymore. How about the lowly 55 comments you got. Remember the days when you received 1000 comments when this show had momentum. I have called you out before on this rediculous move. You shame the history of wine, built around culture, class and elegance. Everytime you pull this stunt your putting down the Wine world. This arogance will catch up to you. Really worked , 55 comments, da!. Take a note from your dad who was genuine and frugal with his $12 wine you featured on Father’s day. He is still humble. You my friend will fall from Grace. Interesting review- we do pinot noir in all its guises-25 acres of the stuff in the Australian Alpine region-yep it snows-we have done a white pinot noir for a number of years-no oak-and let the fruit talk-keep it really dry and the stonefruits shine thru-mid palate is always big and the whole package has character. We sell it for around $20 Oz and it seems to go out the cellar door- I agree that $45 US is at the upper end for this experience. That said pinot noir does make a really nice white wine and I encourage drinkers to seek it out.

    Gary,

I love the choice of the wine, but I found your actions and comments quite contradictory. You began the show by being over the top (your usual self) by pouring out most of the bottle. What a waste of a nice (pricey) bottle on the table and in the spit bucket. You then go on to tell viewers that this bottle is too expensive to recommend to the everyday drinker, though you praise it for being a good nerdy wine. Next time sync up your words with similar actions. Don’t waste a great bottle and then tell your viewers to not waste their money.

The nerdiest thing I do every year is quite simply this: I watch, every single day, an online video show about Wine. That’s pretty damn nerdy. But I love wine. So, it’s okay.

QOTD: Reading a book about modern Spanish wines and “drinking” my way through Iberia! Killer wines for the money.

Question back to you GV – how does a wine maker control the amount of alcohol in the wine?

Heya Gary!! Sorry but I’ve been away for awhile.. Having a pregnant wife is like having a second full time job… I hope to get back to collecting soon!!

Great show Gary! I have white pinot noir wines al the time! i live near germany (Belgium) and here they are easy to find (without the oak and high alcohol)

Do you really have throw out that much wine. I get it when you rinse. But pour so much to leave half on the table and then just throw out almost whole glass to the bucket.

It’s like burning money. It is exagareted, don’t you think.

QOTD: I guess starting yet another blog;)

Mott brought the Thunder at the beginning of the show with his comments. I wholeheartedly agree.

    Nerdiest thing: Playing D&D.

Great single wine episode…..so far in my excursion to my liquor store I’ve yet to find a Pinot Noir Blanc…..hmmmmm…

  98. June 26, 2009

    Uncle Meate

    Gary you need two buckets.

    1. The Spit Bucket(copyright 2009) to spit into.
    2. The Rinse Bucket(copyright 2009) to dump rinses, over-pours, wring out the tablecloth, etc …

Then you can re-bottle The Rinse Bucket and sell it for half the price to us po’ folk. Sometimes it would be a varietal and sometimes it would be a blend. The Spit Bucket re-bottling is optional, but it too may be very lucrative.

QOTD: Besides building a wine cellar in our basement (pretty nerdy) I have rekindled a childhood passion of collecting 1973-1976 vintage Wacky Packages (the ultimate in Nerd-ism).

    I drink with my nose.

At least for Vayniacs in the Chicago area, there is a white Pinot Noir available for a lot less money. Frecciarossa is a wine producer in the Oltrepò Pavese area of Lombardia, Italy, and they make a white Pinot Noir they call “Sillery.” Wine-searcher.com shows the 2007 to be available at Binny’s for $17 and at Sam’s for $18. It also shows it at Cabrini Wines in New York for $16.53. (Knowing about and suggesting Sillery is a pretty wine-nerdy thing. Does this count as my answer to the QOTD?)

Thanks for the episode Gary…..I do Nerdie things all of the time…..One of the most Nerdie things I’ve done might be to demonstrate Bernoulli’s principle using a beach ball and a leaf blower….

I’m gonna have to agree w/ Vintage59. Some of us are struggling to get our bills paid, have two jobs to make ends meet and only have the luxury of purchasing a $45.00 from time to time. So what do you do? Make an ass of yourself by pouring damn near an entire bottle of wine and waste it. I don’t think you understand how this offends some of us. It doesn’t matter if the wine tasted like shite or not. It’s the principle. Please try to show some restraint and humility. We always hear about your humble upbringing but I think you are starting to lose sight of that.

Nice job expanding our wine worlds. I’m curious what motivated Anne Amie to make this if it cost so much, as it must be nearly impossible to market beyond their tasting room. A deep love for Blanc de Noirs?
I’ve been nerding up my wine knowledge lately, tearing through the Terry Theise catalogs until 2 AM.

Here is nerdy wine question for you Gary:
In your opinion, do you think the fruit and aromatics were sufficient enough to make the wine in a stainless steel-non MLF style? Or do you think the wine benefited from the barrel ageing, and MLF?

Very interesting…did not realize someone was ding that here. Just tasted a few from Burgundy that a business partner brought back, but no comparison as they were most likely tainted by chardonnay. We have been trying whatever pinot blanc we can find as of late…a wine distributor friend said that the La Crescent we made came across more like than than the sauvignon blanc I thought…I think it is somewhere in between.

I feel for the dismay and outrage about the spilled wine, and yes, I am more like Sasha and have a hard time “wasting” any wine that is still drinkable.
(Folks, believe it or not, try freezing it…)
However in GV’s defense I have also gotten enough exposure to wine trade events and the folks who frequent them, to understand how one can become desensitized in a way that the consumer might not. Add that to GV’s penchant for passion and mania…and well, it’s not a party until something gets spilled?

QOTD: we just built a home made Aeration-oxidation apparatus for doing S02 on our wines in an attempt to avoid shelling out several hundred bucks for the fancy unit.

QOTD: 1) Saw Fast/Furious Four. 2) Bought a domain/website and did nothing with it. 3) Bought two Enrique Iglesias songs from iTunes. 4) bought a bottle of wine from you and paid more for the shipping than the wine.

Great job as always Gary… now go mop up that Pinot you poured all over the table.

    I’m envious of that tablecloth!!

Wasn’t easy to see all that wine being wasted! Send me some next time GV. I would love to have the privilege of tasting the tons of awesome wines that you do. I was unfair with me and unfair with the winemaker’s effort. :(

QOTD: I have a mini cellar in my bedroom, that’s very nerdy. I watch, every single day (that is on-air), an online video show about Wine. That’s pretty damn nerdy. But I love wine. So, it’s OK. And, I’m currently reading the biography of The Veuve Clicquot. That’s outrageously nerdy. :) (A very good book by the way.)

    See you soon GV.

Love the single wine episodes, bring on the learnin’! I agree it brings out the inner wine geek.

I too like the one wine shows; short and sweet yet chock-a-block full of knowledge. QOTD: nerdiest thing so far this year…how about spending over $200 on books, and being super stoked to alphabetize them? Man, I love alphabetizing! Keep it real GV.

Oh, I watched that video of that short talk you gave on scaling – how’s the whole no swearing thing going? You broke yet?

    Interesting episode, thanks!

QOTD: Hmmm, attempting to choose a highlight from 6 months of nerdiness would be the nerdiest thing I’ve done this year. The fact that I can’t come up with one would be an epic failure, of sorts…

I attended an Anne Amie tasting last Friday. The wines were all interesting. QOTD – It is hard to pick one nerdy thing, but at wine tastings I get a lot of grief for swirling and sniffing the wine a lot. People think it is strange to sniff the wines with the glass tilted towards one side of my nose.

    Christopher Scoggin

It’s a shame this one didn’t bring the thunder, but please keep with the one wine episodes. It slows things down and gives us a chance to look a little closer.

QOTD: Wine geeky? Not much. But my life is geeky-ness so it is hard to say one thing only. Probably attending both an anime convention and a SciFi convention back to back :)

QotD: I haven’t done anything extremely nerdy this year, but a couple years ago I dressed up as spike spegiel from Cowboy Bebop. I took so much crap for that too, because none of my friends had ever seen the show. It was rough going a week or two because its all they would ever talk about.

QOTD: Everything I’ve done this year has been nerdy because I am a total nerd. There is nothing I do that’s not nerdy.

I agree with the “alcohol bite” comment, BUT, that is what makes this an excellent food wine. I had the pleasure of experiencing a pairing of Prisme’ (chilled) with Foie Gras (accompanied by cucumbers, blackberries and local honey) and it was absolutely wonderful. Don’t be so quick to judge this wine right off the shelf; it is not your everyday house wine, nor is it available in mass quantity at $4 a bottle. I challenge you to try again and enjoy this wine in the manner for which it was created.

What’s the nerdiest thing I’ve done this year?

Oh lordy how I could go on, I will give the top two:

    1) I wrote an argumentative quantitative essay trying to convince a girl that it was in her mathematical best interest to go on a date with me…it didn’t work.

    2) One girl told me I was too much of a dork, so I broke down her name phonetically and number/alphabeticaly terms to prove that her name equation was twice as nerdy as my own.

    JayZee

Interesting little episode. I get that this is Pinot Noir Blanc, but you also said that there is a Pinot Noir Blanc grape. Do you mean Pinot Blanc?

QOTD: I set up my own weather station in my yard and have it reporting to my laptop and to the internet. i think that qualifies as nerdy.

Sorry I have been away. Great show and greaat information.

Not really nerdy, but I had the cheesiest arrest I have ever had to make last week. “Failure to return Library Property” was the charge. It took me a while but got the judge to deal with this and did not have to take the person to jail.

Interesting show – I have read about Pinot Noir blanc with the Domaine Serene release of a similar wine. My dad once tried to get me to fall for White Merlot – I thought that it was hideous.

QOTD – I do not understand the word nerd because I am a dren. Do you remember the Happy Days episode when Joanie had a crush on Potsie? She called him “dren”, which is nerd backwards. I honestly can’t think of one, which may simply mean that I am a nerd.

Cool show guy. Very interesting how different the grape is w/o skins. QOTD: Prereading for conferences.
