I’ve been drinking CH Wines for a couple years now. Love the negociant model and the fresh, honest Costco/Internet approach to sales. Great values too (but the Cabs I’ve bought need years to come around – not for drinking now). Glad you’re covering this Gary.

    Nice episode.

    Gary – I have a couple comments for you…..

1st – Please allow Wine Library to ship to WY! Other places do, but not you guys – it is killing me!

2nd – I would love to see a GLASS episode – the same (good) wine out of different glasses. There is a ton of hype out there about this glass or that glass being best for the wine – I would love to see you test that.

    Solid show today.

QOTD: When is the next beer or scotch show? You should get Argyle Alec back on to do some Flanders Red Ales (Belgian sour ales that often show characteristics of sour cherries and balsalmic vinegar).

Either that or Cab Francs of the world. Cheers.

GV, you are the fu#*ing man. Your passion, energy and enthusiasm are second to none. You make wine fun and exciting. Keep up the good work. As soon as I have a couple extra grand to start a serious collection I am coming up to see you. And the over pour with the pinot noir blanc yesterday was priceless – you only live once so do it right the first time. And by the way GO EAGLES!!!! J_E_T_S suck suck suck.

I shop at Costco ALL the time. Love the wine selection. I’ll be looking out for this Cabernet!

It would be great if you could do more episodes focused on wines I can find at Costco, Trader Joes etc… so I can easily purchase them.

Another note, I think it would be awesome if you could film a couple episodes in random settings, outside the normal setup. I heard your dad talking about filming in his cellar… places like that would be AWESOME! Be sure to bring Mott too!!

Great show of a manageable length for watching during a break (with a glass of wine?). I haven’t quite figured out what is so fundamentally appealing about it… I’ll let you know when I have.

Comment of the day is a question for you: If you had to pick one technical component for your store, what would it be? (An online sales presence, an active Twitter presence, a swipable “loyalty” card for customers, what?)

    Enjoy the weekend!

Pros: Knee is getting back to normal after a lot of re-hab, Mariner’s are above .500 (we’ll see after this road trip), have met some really great people through wine as of late.

Cons: Work is terrible, feeling a little trapped in the role, looking for escape routes. Also, missing a great friend due to some uncontrollable circumstances.

Pros: Leaving work for the week to hang out with some good friends on a sunny Friday.

Beyond that, the only other thing to tell you is how much I appreciate all of the time you put into this great, great program. I’ve learned so much, enjoyed so many of the episodes, and my palate is ever-expanding. So… Thank you.

Gary great show, even with the technical difficulties, sometimes you’ve got to focus on one wine, but sometimes you’ve gotta plow through like 20…

I’ve tried Cameron Hughes, but only the cabernet (from a different year). Looks like I did the right thing.

Never tried it, but will look for it, especially the Zin and Cab. Like the multiple, 5 to 7, wine shows. It’s almost like you know you have to keep the tempo going since you have a number of wines to taste.

STOD: I wanted to say i have been a huge lurker lately and I can tell your striving for comments so i felt compelled to help. I want you to keep the show going because I have a feeling you won’t be doing this much longer. Remember Gary, WLTV is how you got your fame. This show is one of the major reasons why you have achieved in the business world. People like your character, therefore if you cancel the show, I think you will have major set-backs. You’ve got me worried bro, your dad even said it.

    Great show!
It would be interesting to me to know more about what happens on a daily basis in your business? Do you taste wine all day? Is there a wine tasting panel? From previous shows, some of your wine must come in wood boxes. Obviously some comes in cardboard. What happens to the containers? We have seen cases of wine all over the office, is that normal? Stuff like that.

Good shows this week Gary, but it’s difficult to top that Sake episode. Beau was great.

I’d love to see you get into a regular rhythm with guests, blind tastings, laid back fridays and non-wine episodes (we really need a root beer episode).

It would also be fun to see you do a blind tasting with a guest!

Nice show…I dont consume many Cali Cabs, but you are right…if it was $16-18, I would be very interested to try that one.

Quck Question GV or anyone reading/posting. I just got into drinking wine and I am trying to learn as much as I can, so thank you in advance for your help. I am unable to decant a wine by leaving it out let’s say on a counter for example, so I was wondering would it be just as good to decant it in the fridge then bring it out and let it warm back up? Will it work the same or will it neutralize the affects of decanting or destroy the nose/taste somehow? Let me know the best course I should take to enjoy the great wines of the world.

    Thank you,
    Brian

The first thing I’d like to tell you is that the main reason I still watch this show (won’t get into how long it’s been) is that you can be hilarious. “My pen exploded in my mouth and it’s delicious” was great. Also, I really appreciate that you still take the time to do this show now that you are a father. I can’t imagine how busy you now are. Remember to try to sleep enough. The last thing is one word, and if you ever read these comments (I know you do) that’s all it has to be: Madeira. Also, I’m not emailing Chris; I’m sure he’s got a lot on his plate, too, and you know my email address.

    Great show Gary!

    SOTD:
Legacy vs. Currency will become even more important (if that’s possible) to you as your little one grows up.

Your next wine book should pair your favorite wines with your favorite dishes, whether that be a particular dish at a particular restaurant or a recipe from the Vaynerchuk family archives.

You should get Guy Fieri from Food Network on your show. You guys appear to be two (English) peas from the same pod, and having talked to some local eateries that he’s been to, he is as genuine (genuinly funny) as he appears.
The two of you on a WLTV episode would be like gasoline and a match!!!

I have tried some of the CH at Costco and it has been hit or mss. I completely agree about the price issue, I see CH and I think value for the price. I wouldn’t pay $15 or $20 for a CH, just because I thought their “schtick” was low price for great wine.

Keep up the great work. I too am afraid you will quit this gig.

I recently took a trip to Colorado where I went to many Micro-Breweries, and I was delighted to experience a whole new aspect of beer, the sniffy sniff, the dissecting of flavors, and so on. Really made me enjoy it so much more. Thanks so much for helping me realize the thunder!

Gary V….. I guess I am a lurker but I leave comments, mostly when you tell me to. So I love WLTV. I don’t remember how I came to find it but I’m so glad I did. I have no cable TV so hulu.com and http://tv.winelibrary.com is my main source of weeknight entertainment. I just want to thank you for doing the show, you have taught me everything I know about wine. I have done two secret packs (election and Christmas of this year) so much fun for myself, friends and family I shared with. I also have “Crush It” on pre-order, looking froward to that.
Now I want to say two thing 1) do more blind tasting. 2) you should somehow collaborate with Adam Carolla. He has a pretty successful podcast and he has said he likes his red wine. He would love your passion and to learn a thing or two

LODI REPRESENT!!! (And El Dorado County) The local Zins are comfort food. With a punch. Supersaturated neutron jam, baby.

QOTD #1: The trick to coloring within the lines is to also be the one who drew the lines in the first place.

QOTD #2: Folks like me and wine — I’m usually looking at the $8-15 range. If I ever break out of that, it’s maybe once a year. This is still a privilege — I still have a great time learning about wine, and doing food combining and just plain drinking the stuff. However, it sometimes does feel like there are different universes going on. (I’m frequently aware, when driving through Napa, that there are individual wines in the neighborhood that cost more than my car, even with the new radiator.) Is there anything my wine experience has in common with people who drink $40+ wines regularly? Or for whom cash ain’t no object? How are we similar? Or different?

Re. Cream. OK I guess, but I prefer Clapton unplugged.

P.S. I’m still laughing with the gent who won the parody contest about his picking up some “struggle” in the lemons in the lemonade.

    LOL alot. Great show.
No more Starducks references please. They don’t need the advertizing and they have screwed the coffee world.
You’re pretty tight on the scores today. 90 plus for a very well balanced Cab from Napa’s Famous Stags Leap region? For under 20 bones! Not an oakchip in the whole bottle? Normally you(not me)would have splinters all over your palate.

Watched several “throwback” epsiodes over the last few weeks, including #16 with the 2003 Egelhoff Cab. Based on your recommendation, I purchased 6 bottles of this and popped my first one two nights ago. You couldn’t have been more right on this one. Even three years after that episode, still very tannic but unreal in the glass. Glad I have several more, and thanks for the continues good advice.

I said it 100 times, you are the reason I went into wine. You passion and casual manner made me go past the stuffiness of the wine world. I live in Cambridge, England, the haven of posh and stuffy people you see… Please keep up the show, I know it is getting harder with the family and all the things going on in your life, but this is the best wine show, be it online or TV. No kissing arse, I am calling it as it is too. One thing I would love, since I am a bit of a foody, is more on wine-food pairings. Keep it up GV, you are changing the wine world; if not the world, at least you changed MY wine world.

I think alot of expensive wines are hit and miss. Unless you really know it’s gonna be good, like if you could taste it, or trust Gary, and who wouldn’t it can be very disapointing. Enjoy your jammy zins at under 15. It’s a bargain. Once in a while I’ll put out 30 or forty for a big juicy cab but you’re not missing that much.

2nd Comment in two days for me. We don’t have a Costco close to where I live but quoting from Animal House , the movie, “knowledge is good”. Gary, I love the show. I am new to “the internets’”most passionate wine show” so I don’t know if you have done vertical wine tastings before but I think that would be a cool thing.

  65. June 26, 2009

    Elias

oh, one last thing, from yesterday night I can proud myself that I have now watched all your WLTV episodes, I only started watching 6 months ago, and had a lot of catching up to do. It is amazing how your on camera persona evolved from episode 1 to now. I think around the mid hundreds you started bringing the thunder

  66. June 26, 2009

    Dale Cruse

GV, I think it would be great if you wore your green wristband, as green indicates solidarity with the striking Iranians. You already changed your Twitter icon to green.

  67. June 26, 2009

    Kell Brigan

Yes, it really is bugging me, even though I’m trying to tell myself it isn’t. Trash my earlier comment; this one’s more important. And, I am going to stop watching the show, unless I hear back about this in my email. Life’s hard enough without actually choosing to expose myself to this sort of stuff.

QOTD #3: Because somebody (female) has to say it:

The analogy about “weekday” versus “Saturday Night” “dating” further convinces me that the “sexual revolution” has been one gigantic mistake, and that all women should from now on refuse to have sex with anyone until after they’re married. Not kidding. This is the only way for a woman to be sure she’s actually on the “value-added” woman list, that she’s not hated so much she’s actually been “ranked” as a “70-pointer” or a “Wednesday night” diversion.

Frequently, it seems the assumption on the Internet is that it is one big guy’s locker room, and that women are only tolerated, and only welcome if we’re willing to listen to this sort of stuff. And, the assumption is that this hatred (and, it is hatred) is somehow normal or acceptable. Why, why, why do men hate us so much? You have female guests. You talk about women winemakers. You frequently talk about how much you love your family, which, one would assume, includes loving a female person. And, then, you say this — that there are somehow women who it’s OK to lie to, or to use, or to think of as somehow inferior or substandard? So, are women welcome to watch the show or not? And, if we are, tell me again why we should even bother. With a 50% divorce rate, the idea of presuming to rate women as if we were disposable, as if men really have the moral option to consume us and then throw us away if we’re not “worth dating on Saturday” just isn’t funny. Where the heck did this hatred come from all of a sudden?

In a phrase, fuck this shit.

  68. June 26, 2009

    Bryan

Love the show Gary. Only started watching about 6 months ago and I’ve learned so much. Keep up the good work.

-statement: “I always bring my game when I am researching or designing for new clients, it’s just better for them to know your energy first hand, it may be a little heavy and intense, but seldom scary, great clients appreciate value”. God I love my job.

Cheers Gary, keep this show going, it may sway from one thing to another but there is just so much stuff related to wine that you have a winner here, no matter if you spill some vino on the table or have a boring guest, it’s all good.

Hey Gary, no need to apologize for wasting wine. Don’t EVER feel guilty about being successful. It’s not like you’re some useless playboy pissing away your trust fund. Thunder delivered again !

I was telling my friend about the book Crush it (which I bought on the first day and didn’t you say something about a wrist band?) anyway be careful where you put the space, I typed it fast and it came out Cru shit.. opps.

Blind taste in the near future?

    What happened to the couch?

Good evenin! Just a quick note to request a more frequent effort to identify some tasty wines below $20. This message comes from a poor grad student who had the (mis)fortune of working at a wine store before beginning my doctoral path. I.E., its frustrating having acquired a taste for yummy wines outside a student’s budget! Better yet, come on down to Richmond VA, and experience a burgeoning wine culture – one that is still pretty mindful of those with interested palates, but tighter pocket books!

STOD: Carpe diem, we are the museum of the present, start enjoyin’ it!

Nice show though I have been to COSTCO once and don’t plan on going back. Too big, too busy and I feel like a gypsy at a carnival. I will try and find the CH #100.

SOTD: From this past week, we have come to realize that life is much too short. Given that, if I could have a wine and dinner with anyone living or deceased (family excluded) it would have to be Thomas Jefferson. “Make every pitch as though it were your last.”

It’s a comparison/metaphor. Women rate men also. If you had a choice, which most of us don’t, you could date a very nice, good looking, smart and balanced man on a Thursday night with pizza. You could also be stuck dating a boring, unkempt, cheap bastard on a Saturday night. That’s the difference between a great wine and a so so wine. In Garys demented reality. Or something like that.

SOTD: When I was getting ready to make my end of the month order to take one last advantage of the free shipping I got to thinking about WL marketing. If your computer tracking system allows why not maximize sales by making each individual Vayniac an unpaid WL salesman. If you’re able to assign individual free shipping codes and then allow the indivual Vayniac’s (or WL customers) to hand out those codes to friends, family and acquaintances and, further, to track all the sales using that unique code then you could run a Wine Library’s Greatest Salesman contest. I think that most of us Vayniacs tell our inner circle about the FS but how exponentially would sales expand if you made it competitive.

Representing the CKC, I don’t have a tv and love watching online when I have the free time. I grew up drinking wine with my parents, and so it’s great to see different varietals on your show that aren’t part of my parent’s normal repertoire. I tried my first wine from Portugal (2004 Azamor), brought it home, and my stubborn, German dad loved it! Thank you for providing such an accessible resource for everyone to peruse; watching always gets me excited about wine!

    Gary,

Please let me know how you enjoyed the tea book I recommended. It should do a lot for you.

However, if you are looking mainly for a pocket sized reference book with a brief history of tea and tea culture, presentations of tea in white glasses to show color, steeping times, and so on, then “The Tea Companion: A Connoisseur’s Guide” by Jane Pettigrew ISBN: 0-7624-2150-9 is for you.

Good luck and I hope all is well with you beautiful daughter Misha.

    hi
my name is robert bocse, i’m from romania, i wach the show from about episode 170, i used to leave comments at the beggining, but now i’m a lurker, i asked you for a showtout for my girlfriends birthday, i talk to her a lot about wine, about your show, and thought that the shoutout would be a nice surprise but you didn’t do it, so i decided not to leave you comments for a while. i also have an email from you (about a year and a half ago) in wich you promise to do a romanian wine in the show, that never happened either.
congratulations on you being a father, i still watch your show everytime.

Hi gary i’ve been watching your show for the last year… and i gotta say I LOVE IT. It helped me quite a bit when i was working at a wine restaurant and didn’t have time to taste all the bottles on our list (due to time and money) but i very easily was able to look up almost all of our wine list and hear what you had to say about it. pretty cool

sotd: i heard you refer to a wine as “bullish” more than once in the last week or two. i would love to hear what you’ve been investing in!

Gary, just heard about the M. Jackson autopsy, apparently he died of food poisoning from eating a 10 yr. old weenie(ba-dump!). My Costco smackdown was between a Wine and Spirits 92pt. 2006 Cambria Pinot for $16 and the Aussie 08 Innocent Bystander Pinot at $14(06,07 90pts. Steiman). The Aussie won and was amazingly bright, fresh and tasted like real Pinot with a little air and it has become one of my summer go to wines. I want to hook you up with a box of Italia Muscat table grapes(nearly extinct) that my family produces, you will flip at the flavor intensity, look for it sometime in Sept. Keep up the good work.

    Gary-
longtime lurker but your pleas for feedback could go denied no longer. Love the amping of of the geek-factor and it was really nice to see a “portfolio” from one producer. Love the direction the show is going in and you have certainly contributed to the expansion of our wine palatte. Ran into a distributer in a local foods store and had a really engaging chat- in part due to the have no fear and give no apologies for drinking the wine you want attitude you’re putting out there. My response to the statement of the day? Thank you.

Long time lurker first time commenter. Thanks for taking my comment. If I could have my perfect balance of Wine Library TV Episodes it would be this.

    1-2 Guests a week
    1 single wine education show
    1 brown bag episode
    1-2 4-6 bottle tasting episode

Congrats on the book deal and the little one.

    Keep drinking,

I see this “show” as a form of entertainment and learning – seems some people have way too much personally invested – “it’s a show”….

QOTD – enjoy the mix of shows – with guests – without guests – family – friends – one wine – five wines – short – long – please avoid a set pattern – like the diversity….

Gary: Intersting show. Will look for the lot 100 cab at my costco… love that place. But the father’s day with your dad was a recent favorite episode. that show rocked. love the love you showed for your dad.

Question for you is: I’m NJ guy who works at P&G in marketing. In modesty, I have the chops. But truth be tols I have learned tons just following you for the past 6-12 months (about wine, biz amd attitude). I want to pay back in some way. since it’s an open forum, here we go:
    >belated congrat’s on your lovely daughter
    >nice job keeping an open mind and mixing up your style of show (just as we need to keep an open mind about the wines we drink)
    >Lot 100 looks like it is only available direct from the winery according to the online search sites but 2,000 cases should be enough that it will start to appear at a store near me
    >WS this month had an interesting recap of results from a recent survey – 67% of women said they drink wine to relax at the end of the day – not because it tastes good or because of health benefits
    >Evolution #9 is great by the poolside
    >Free shipping is “da boss”
    >People take you way to serious – good thing you don’t
    >Football season is just around the corner!

SOTD: I know this will sound sappy, but you inspire me Gary. Your energy, passion and desire to just continue to better yourself and all out dominate anything you get in to is simply outstanding. I wish I could be 1/10th as passionate as you are.

My wife and I are introducing our daughter and her husband to Sonoma & Napa Counties two weeks from Monday and we all can hardly wait!

Mrs. OH and I just got back from a discount wine festival on the Cleveland lakefront. We managed to find a few gems amongst all of the other discount wines. Definitely worth the visit if you’re not a snob.

SOTD: I really want to know how you (Gary) manage your time. I’m 37, married, own a house and my own business (photographer) and have a beautiful 17-month old daughter that I am at home with all week (my wife Brenda is an elementary school teacher, out of the house 8-5 M-F). I can’t keep up. My business isn’t where I want it to be and my personal work (being a photographer I have an artistic bent I want to fulfill) is almost zero. I chose the full-time job of Dad during the week instead of day care, so I know that is a hurdle I will not jump. But between maintaining a home (the yard, cars, minor repairs & improvements) and maintaining my wonderful family, how do I do more for me/my work? Thoughts on time management Gary? Perhaps I shouldn’t take the time to watch WLTV! Thank you as always.

G…Thanks for mixing it up with such a *controversial* negociant. I see his stuff at COSTCO all the time and have bitten on a few. And, like yourself, have liked some, have disliked some; such is the nature of wine. How many Mondavi, Kendall-Jackson, Beringer wines do we feel the same about? Great content yet once again. Thank you.

SOTD: Just please keep doing what you are doing, keep in touch, and please continue to jump in and converse with your forum crew. We’re a pretty good bunch who support you like no other…..and we kinda like the juice. Thanks again. Was I suppose to leave my e-mail address somewhere…it sounded like there was gonna be a link. SOTD: Remembering my very first wine experience — I was ninetee … I mean, 21-years-old. I bought a killer (really, it’s killing me) bottle of Beringer White Zinfandel, and went to town trying to introduce myself to a more elegant alternative than Mickey’s Big Mouth. Okay, that was a painful admission. Let’s switch gears. GV, keep it up. I watch you every day. I LOVE the fun facts. John’s “Cream, this is it” song was frightening. I like QOTD better than SOTD. Costco has a generic Champagne. I wonder what it’s like. Your baby angel is BEAUTIFUL. I keep waiting for you to preview the following two very special guests on WLTV: Mottster of course, and Lizzy!

As a random comment I wanted to make sure you appreciate how your show really transends typical media. I’m been around the world this last year on business (Australia, Abu Dhabi) for long periods away from family, etc. Because you’re on the Internet, one consistent part my life has been your show, inspiring me to continue to explore wine (even in AD where you can only really buy wine in tourist hotels). Sports are different (love Aussie rules), politics are different, television is different in these different places. You’re a true bit of the old USA wherever I go.

Best play ever, save up a few Thunder Shows for watching on the Nano during those long plane rides.

SOTD: Just keep up the passion and thunder I am loving the last couple episodes so keep up the upward trend! And maybe a Free Shipping code every couple months would not hurt because I can rarely try most of the wines due to the expensive shipping costs.

Fun episode to watch Gary; this is my first comment, and I wanted to thank you for opening my palate up to wine and getting me to try different things. It has helped me in my passion of reviewing whisky, as I now pick up on wine notes in some of the sherried whiskies I taste that 2 or 3 months ago I would have missed; you expanded my palate!

I gotta say, I sometimes get lost in these types of episodes when you power through a bunch of wines. It’s fun cuz you start talking really fast, but I also find myself doing other things while listening to you in the background.

So I wanted to tell you about a great sniffy sniff I had the other day. I went to this awesome wine bar in Grand Rapids, Michigan (how often, if ever, have you been to Michigan?) and had a 2006 Le Mas des Collines Gigondas. Talk about poopy cow manure! I mean, poop city, USA! It was awesome. The wine was so interesting; it took a while for me to get into it. Definite heat on the back end, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I had never had a Gigondas before (expanding the palette, you know).

And since I get to tell you whatever I want, I’m going to mention again how I think you should do a show at a college football game. Namely, Notre Dame. Just think: the football stadium, touchdown Jesus, cheerleaders all around. I think it sounds like a great idea. I’ve got two tickets for you and Mott. Can’t you just hear the fight song now: Cheer, cheer for old Notre Dame…

    Keep it real GV. :)

Hey Gary, First time commenter, just wanted to say that I love the show and thanks to you, I am much more knowledgeable in wine now, I am no longer intimidated by ordering wine at a restaurant or browsing a nice wine shop.

SOTD: I Would like more solo episodes with more emphasis on just the wine. I enjoy a guest every now and then but more than one or two guests a week is a little much i think.

    Dear gary,

I’ve been a longtime listener and avid proseltyzer of the thunder show.

I love it. I love you. I respect you. I relate to you. I get you. You clearly are obsessive about your passions and pasionate about your obsessions.

I download your podcast obsessively, myself. I listen and learn. I’m equally educated and entertained. Keep on keepin on.

I just have one singular question. I have one issue, if you will.

Please, can you explain your scoring system. We all know that scoring is a whole megillah, if you will, but I actually care about your perspective and respect your palate and most of all, your honesty and non-partisan taste.

How can you say, “yeah this wine is really mediocre. I really can’t advocate it. It is over-priced but ok”. Alright I’m paraphrasing. But please indulge me. You would give the afoprmentioned description an 87. That’s a b plus. Man, when I was in high school in kansas city, a b plus was pretty cool. I’m confused, because you regularly score “mediocre” wines as 82 or 88. In fact in recent times (over the last two months) I’ve been pleased to “understand” your taste and point of view better when you say “this wine is a travesty, and I score this a 55.”. Thank you. That is clarity for me.

I am not calling you out all alone. But in fact most wine blogs, mags etc score all too many wines of “mediocre” description, in the 80s. The 80s are a B. That is “good.”. Let’s call a mediocre wine a 75. Come on gary.

Go chiefs. Go jayhawks. Go vaynerchuck.

    L’chaiim,

    Jeff sosnow

    Great Episode as Usual…
If I hadn’t seen you with all your energy and passion for wine I never would have picked up my first bottle all that time ago.
It took a month of watching to finally pick up a bottle. Now a year and some change later, I have had every Shiraz under 20 bones that I have found in my town, which is saying alot. Our local grocer has approx. a 2000 bottle cellar.
I’ve tried not to have the same bottle more than once, you do say to keep expanding your palate, even though that is not what you meant. I have tried a couple pinot noir and a zin just last weekend so I am trying to follow the your schooling… I’ve gone on a wine vacation that I never would have without you. I only got to go to 7 of the 400 or so wineries in E Wa, but hey 2 years ago I wouldn’t have even contemplated 1. I’ve always been a LURKER, but this took over an hour to type, my 5 words a minute…

Just want to say THANK YOU GARY VAYNERCHUK!!!!!

    QOTD: Grand statement eh? O.K.
    - The wines of Bourgueil are some of the most under-appreciated in Europe!
    - Washington Syrah is incredibly over rated and lame. Stick to Merlot guys.
    - The top 2nd-5th growth ‘04 Bordeaux wines actually represent very good value.
    - America needs to stop making Viognier asap. Yeah, I know there’s some good ones, but most are insipid.
    - Torrantes smells like somebody spilled a bunch of flowery perfume in the Sprite factory.
    - Argentine Malbec is the most annoying win fad ever. There are some great ones, but most are one dimensional (and usually over-oaked) junk.
    - From what I’ve tasted, the ‘07 southern Rhones are going to crush it!!!!
    - Guinea pigs are neat.

The cabernet needs a higher score. I’ve never had it so i don’t know. You used every superlative in the book. Creamy nose? very creamy, harmony etc etc.
I think you let your preconceived notions get over on you. Stags leap fruit, balance, deliciousnessity. If I dare go into a costfrickin co it’s gonna cost me another 50 bones for the memberfrigginship, hate that place, but now I gotta try it. I guess I’d rather pay shipping from blah blaaaaaa

You’re back in good form with today’s and yesterday’s show.
I’m a big fan, a good customerr and a regular if not frequent commenter.
I guess what I’m hoping is that you won’t be distracted or allow the show to be diluted by your ever-increasing outseide interests.
We’ve been seeing too many irrelevant guests and too often the very good info the wine-oriented guests bring has drowned in a sea of blather (that Aussie winemaker comes to mind).
I guess what I’m suggesting is you tighten, hone, edit.
And even more importantly, don’t lose sight of your mission which is wine appreciation and education.
It’s your remarkable palate and your novel taste descriptors that lend a sense of discovery to the art of wine. And it’s your willingness to, circumstances be damned, take to task some of the bigest names in the wine business for the quality of their product–possibly at the expense of your retail business–that gives us permission to believe in your credibility.
So I’m saying, keep it on point.
As the British say, “mind your head.” Don’t let ego get the better of you. Edit yourself . Stop the “play play already for instance.
Prepare questions for your guests. Don’t let the conversation meander.
You can do that and still stay true to your mission.
Keep expanding your technique with the flip cam stuff. Tho it can be hard to watch, it’s fun when the show goes places.
More restaurant wine list show, more value shows and I’d love to see more behind the scenes at WL episodes.
Finally, I just want to say that although I disagree with it totally and I believe she misconsrued yoru intent, I was touched by Keli Brigan’s comment and applaud her boldness.
A big thank you to you and the whole Wine LIbrary team. Keep on keepin’ on.

Hi Gary, it’s the first time I leave a comment.

I’d like to ask you to review mexican wines, there are really good mexican wines like Nebbiolo from L.A. Cetto, Vino de Piedra, Icaro, Kerubiel, Gabriel, Serafiel, Gabriel, aka the archangels from Adobe Guadalupe, the wines from Casa Madero, Chateau Camou and I could continue.

Please give it a try, the Vayniacs in México would really like you to take a lok on this side of the border.

What do I want from the show? I’d love more wines available in quebec (saq.com), I’m not sure how much overlap there is, or even if it’s possible but I love the show and it’s frustrating sometimes that I can almost never taste the wines on the show.

Aside from that, love your energy as always and I hope you help make a Sake Social TV show :)

    Gary! What up?

So, SOTD: I love the show and the keynotes. I’m subscribing to both WLTV and GV vodcasts and watch mostly in bed on my iPhone. (Because your style of presenting is to relaxing! Hahah j/k)
BUT, the website is kinda awkward on mobile devices. You need to scroll 2 miles to get to the comment form, and then the form itself is way too big. Also, your keynotes are not watchable on iPhone. I would love to watch and participate in the conversation at any moment (so also on the go, or in bed), and since you’re so big on interacting, it’s a shame that it’s not always possible.
Syncing your keynotes to the GV vodcast would be awesome (not the 2hr ones, but, you know..) and also a mobile/iPhone friendly layout would make my day!

Your work is so inspiring, keep up pumping love and positive energy into the interwebs!

    Best wishes,
    Robert-Jon

Great episode as usual. I tasted the Tempranillo the same day at a local tasting event- I agree with your assessment.

Gary, I guess that’s what I want to tell you- I like your palate. I find that my palate varies quite a bit with the usual critics. Sometimes I agree with them, but more often than not I have no idea where they were coming from. I find you to be fair and impartial, with a palate that seems to converge with mine. I’ve purchased a lot of wine from Wine Library, and have not been disappointed with your assessments.

    Dear Gary,
Since your SOTD was directed in particular to lurkers, I felt it would be appropriate to thank you for all your efforts, even though it is extremely unlikely I will every buy anything from your company. I live in Warsaw, Poland, I am 36, have a wife and three sons. The reason I want to thank you is because since I started watching your webcast I experienced so many new things! Several months ago someone gave me a bottle of Amarone. It was a real eye-opener. I started looking for some information about this wine and soon came upon your show. Since then I completely stopped buying the same wine over and over again (which was mostly one of the many well priced and quite decent sweet german wines) and started experimenting. Recently, after the show with Daniel Schuster (BTW, isn’t he more Czech than German?) I started going through all the NZ wines available and I absolutely love them. Quite affordable too.

Suggestions for future shows: Wines from the US for someone who has never tried them. Wines best suited for copious festive guzzling (riesling? vinho verde? rose’?). Wines for the olfactively challenged (like me, people with very underdevelopped noses).

Best wishes and thanks for the show!

SOTD: I was home spending time with my mom the other day when I saw the link for The Sake Education Show Part 2 roll up on my twitter feed. As much I was wanted to continue chatting it up with mom, I couldn’t resist starting the episode. So I asked her to watch with me. She is NOT AT ALL a wine drinker but she LOVED the episode. Not only did she feel educated but she was thoroughly entertained. That is the same way I feel every time I watch an episode. You have expanded my wine knowledge, vocabulary, and love for the drink.

Next week I will be in NYC and hope to stop by to finally see the empire that is Wine Library. Thanks again for all you do. Love the show and the passion behind it!

Okay anything here is advice when you potty train your daughter? Well last night I went to my brothers to open a couple bottles but got there a little early to catch my niece before she went to bed. She is potty training and it’s the cutest thing when you cheer for them after a successful attempt. Last night she was constantly itching her crack and rubbing her butt up on the chair and her Mom’s leg. Her Dad asked what was wrong with her butt, and she replied “I squeezed to hard”.

Lots of good info in this ep- thanks to both you and Mott!

SOTD: I watch just about every episode (eventually), comment on a fair number of them and I think it’s in part because WLTV has become , in a way, another member of our extended family of friends. With caring for Mom here at home, husband, working, teen/young adult sons, church family, livestock, gardens, etc. it’s not because I’ve nothing better to do! Taking the time to learn, think, laugh, agree and disagree about wine and a host of related (& non-related!) subjects is good ‘medicine’ for me. Thanks!

  170. June 27, 2009

    quaffed

Looking through the past episode archive, what really makes your show great for me is the variety. To the comments that suggest [x] or [y] as a means to better your show, I’d agree only to the point that those suggestions are just components of the whole Vayner-experience. I think that you should stick with your gut and pluck suggestions from the community when those ideas feel ripe.

The diversity of topics freshens the viewing experience. If its He-Man or the Jets that add that boost to your passion, go with it. At the same time, repetition becomes homogenization, and thus stagnation. The cycle determines when variety ends. Wine is luckily a topic that the more one knows, the more to explore becomes revealed.

My suggestion would be for you to go through your own shows for reflection and meditation on what you want out of episode 700, 800, or 1000. You provide a great service to the World. Be proud, remain honest- keep it real and that jazz. Be sure to covet your private life, in protectionist fashion, with time for yourself and time for your girls.

Final bit: Challenge restaurants in NYC-area to come up with food-wine pairings for a block of future shows and get some good free grub. That’s right, milk it Mr Vaynerchuk.

Well wishes to all with Eyes on this Line.

Hey Gary, I was just over at the Wine Library this past Thursday and picked up a couple of bottles of 2003 Fattoria Scopone Brunello di Montalcino. I love big full-bodied exploding red wines. I am partial to North Coast California Cabs. But I remember with fondness the best wine I ever had the pleasure of tasting – Waypoint 2005 Andy Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Cabernet Sauvignon. If I knew as much about wine back then as I do know, I would have hoarded a whole lot more bottles – because your offer at the time – $39.98 a bottle remains unmatched to this day for any Beckstoffer wine.

Thank you for all of the work!

have been asking you a few questions without reply and i guess emailing you now wouldn’t be the best idea. besides, cmott? I think it’ll be full as well…
so anyway, see if you can answer my questions…just out of curiosity,

    1) do you breath white wines? if yes, how long?
    2) how do you note down wines you taste when you dine (write, record, etc)?
    3) i want to personally try more wines but what if you open a bad bottle to try (don’t think you’ll finish it, but it’ll be a waste not finishing ordering something different that’s bad)?

    Have a great weekenend!

Hey GV – I liked that one – lots to taste! A few things:

Thanks again for all the content over the years. 700 episodes and going strong – hope you can keep it up!

If you’re up for it, would love to see a few double blind tastings. 3-4 bottles that you only know red/white. That would be fun!

Speaking of nerdy thing – I emailed you an Excel analysis of your scores vs price last month (after episode 675). That was really nerdy, but hope you found it interesting.

How can we get the green wristbands?

    Hey Gary,

Even though I am an avid Vayniac, I`ve never left a comment before but I feel that I have to because I feel so passionate about sake.

I live in Japan and my wife is from Niigata, where the best and most renown sakes (Hakaisan, Kubota etc.) are made. What was said about sake being at its best after 1.5 years from the date of produce (to experience the intended sake that the producer is trying to achieve) is TOTALY FALSE!!!!

Sake should be drunk IMEDIATELY for it to be at its best, in fact, it is even considered rude to give a bottle of sake as a present if it is more than 3 months old!!

How do I know this to be true??

My wife’s family has been producing premium quality sake for generations and do nothing but state the fact when we drink together, and one thing that they all agree on is this….

    SAKE DOES NOT AGE!

PS. I love your show. Congrats on the baby!

Great episode as usual Gary and Mott. In this one, you made a great reference to Thursday night pizza wines. I’d like to see you do a episode on mass produced wines and pick ones that you would drink on pizza night. There are some of us out there who do a large amount of our wine drinking with pizza (or cheap Italian dishes) and we could use some guidance. Likewise, an episode on good wines that you’d serve at large parties (50+ people).

Gary, you always rinse glasses between tastes. Why don’t you also rinse your mouth? Seriously, I’m curious. I’ve been to tastings where after several tastes it gets harder & harder to discern nuance in flavors. Is this common, or just a symptom of a less practiced palate?

    Thanks!

    Good Episode.
    Loved MJ in the background.

One thing I think would be good is to once a week or so pick a state and take a few bottles of wine from that state and review them. This I think could help people to support their local economy.

    Hope all is well

Great show, loved the comparison of six, nice little break from having a guest. Based on your descriptions, I believe I would like the 2007 Flying Winemaker Zinfandel the best, & so will try it.

SOTD: I read the other replies, but thought you meant something like this:

    Hi Gary!
SOTD- From my experience being new to wine and passing your show on to my friends, most of the young people watching are trying to learn about wine from you. The tidbits about expanding your palate here and there are great, but its the education shows that really stand out. Obviously #148, and its that style that keeps me watching. Not just choosing a region to review, but a talk about what makes that region great for growing wine, etc. Plus, anything about Canadian wines!

SOTD: Gary, I want to change “my” wine world. In BC Canada, we have a liquor tax on average of 130+%. The government also dictates what we are aloud to bring into our provence and ship out. We can’t even ship inter-provence in our own country. How can we stop a dictatership monopoly to free the wine???? Any ideas?

Observation: the bottle says 2006 for the Stags Leap and the titleing and links above say 2007….

STOD: Gary, what advice can you give on “Crushing It” before the book comes out? I’m working on getting a head start, and have run into some technical shortcomings with my skills but I’m trying to figure it out and I’m pushing onward. Need to do this on a “dime budget” for the moment but that will not affect my content, which I know is the KING.

I’m growing weary of waiting for the economy to turn around so I’m going to turn around my own economy with my own individual/independent efforts to make things happen. You’ve laid a good roadmap thusfar, just looking for some more nuggets to make things POP quicker.

Gary – I’d like to see you do more restaurant wine list analyses. Particularly from an educational perspective for new wine drinkers who would like to know the basics for getting around the list. What varietals tend to go with what types of food? What is the best way to break down a list and eliminate some of the options to narrow down to the ones worth trying? Tips, advice, etc. You could do a lot via video to help educate new wine drinkers beyond just “expand your pallette and watch my episode where i eat dirt and lots of foods”. :)

    Gary–

I was really impressed with the way you responded to the people who didn’t appreciate your spilling of the wine yesterday. If it were me, I’d have been much more pissed off and told the dissenters to f–k off or shut up. You pay for the wine and it’s your show–do whatever the hell you want. If people don’t like it, they can leave.

Gary – TERRIFIC EPISODE!!! I’m really liking the variety recently where you’re mixing in 1 wine shows, then 6 wines today. Keeping us on our toes and we love you for it. Enjoyed the C.R.E.A.M. Cash Rules Everything Around Me reference quite a bit, as well as the tribute to the creaky chair.

SOTD: There is an exciting new winery in Purcellville, VA called “Notaviva”. Their play is integrating the music & wine worlds. Tonight I’m attending the world’s 1st “Wine/Music Pairing Event”. Blind taste 5 wines and listen to 10 one minute clips of music to choose favorite pairing. Gary, I wanted to invite you but I know how busy you’ve been with the baby and life. I will take pictures and post next week. The website describes the event.

Hi gary, Been watching WLTV for about 9 months. Been into wine for about 12 years and I think I know a bit and have tasted a wide variety. In terms of entertainment your wine blog is second to none, but when it comes to wine education there are many out there who simply blow you away. I guess you can’t have your cake and eat it, that goes for Parker too, you blow him out of the water in the charisma department.

However, I’m now finding it a bit boring at times. Not you, you’re a dude and a half. I think it’s just the format that doesn’t do it for me in the long term, although you seem to have a very loyal following who just keep loving it no matter what.

Have you heard Empire Of The Sun, by the way, I’m listening to them as I write this, they’re bringing the thunder.

You are a bit of an enigma to me at times. On the one hand you have a lot of integrity, you make great efforts in dealing with people’s concerns and your transparency is inspiring. I understand that you have a drinks business and I don’t take issue with your use of WLTV in the general mix of growing your trade. However, I do get the impression that sometimes there is a hidden agenda – guests, wines, QOTD etc often seem like a marketing exercise. I know you’re a modern entrepreneur, but is this an area of concern? Maybe I’m too cynical?

The thing that bothers me most of all throughout the wine trade, is the lack of foresight concerning the dangers of alcohol. Wine consumption has grown greatly in recent times. There is so much promotion of wine in romantic terms. I know that it is a great product, but it’s addictive and damaging if wrongly used and I thing that certain vunerable types will develop alcohol related problems as a result of wine marketing strategies, in a similar way to what has happened with tobacco. I don’t want to sound like a bore, I’ve worked in the wine trade and had my own wine business, but I don’t see that this problem is being picked up on much. Personally, I would avoid the temptations of a vast student market. Young people generally don’t care that much about the finer points of wine, alcohol is more important. I know some who have aquired drink problems stemming from their university excesses. Making wine attractive to young people, is in my view, a mistake. I’m sorry to be making such a strong point here, but it’s something that very much concerns me.

I find I’m now taking more interest in your blogs on business. This is where I think you bring the real thunder with lightening too. Looking forward to reading CRUSH IT.

I love Americanisms. The words and phrases that you and your guests come out with are priceless. I’m a British 2nd generation Italian ( if that makes sense ) and I recognise the origins of some of them, but I’m now confused: what is the difference between a geek, a dork and a nerd ?

    God bless you,

    Zino

Hi Gary, hi Mr. Mott, hi Sasha!

Nice show as usual. The other day (Sake show 2) I described my 3-stage epiphany on wine. I think Gary already taped the following episode, so he did not have a chance to read it. (Or it wasn’t cool enough! Kkkkkkk…) Anyway, it’s been on hell of a ride in this wine world so far.

I am missing an Amarone show GV! I know that credit crunch is taking everybody down up there, but would be nice to have those beauties on the show again.

Best wishes to the Winelibrary crew.

Qotd: Overall I enjoy your show and there isn’t much that needs changing. I would like to see a more regional type of approach to the wine though, because I can never seem to find the wines that review in the wine shops around here. But it could also be because I live in College Station, TX which is not known a cultural city in the least.

SOTD: Our regions distributors won’t bring in anything unless they can get a guarantee of selling 500 cases of the brand. It kills the diversity to be had in our package stores. This was said to my parents when discussing our wine hobby and why we visit package stores in neighboring states for something different every time we get the chance. I hope that the new laws that Tennessee has been working on amount to more than nothing. I’m still ticked about the form letter I got back from a local representative stating they were not interested in my issue (okay I used a “free the grapes” form letter to complain about our archaic shipping laws).

Anyway, keep up the good work as long as it is still fun.

SOTD: You should visit the forums more often than you do. Yes you are busy with the new kid and all, but you are hardly ever on there. And then a lot of times its a hit and run. Plus it will be easier to bust your balls once the Jets start loosing to my phins just like last year with that “old guy” who was taking you to the superbowl or so I was told.

My first comment ever on a WLTV and wanted to tell you how much I enjoy your show. It’s even better than a lot of shows on TV these days. I’ve been watching since episode 400 or so and bought your book for my dad last father’s day who’s big into wine and the Patriots, not me, don’t worry.

    Keep up the fantastic work!

SOTD: You got me interested in wine and at only 19 I’ve been dying to try some of the ones you review (once I become of age, of course ;) ). I think I can speak for people my age and say that they will find wine less intimidating and more fun because of people like you. I want to consume as much knowledge as possible so I’ll be ready for what the wine world has to offer when I can have my first bottle.

Gary, I really expected you to throw in the towel on wltv once you became a dad. I’m so glad that you’re still in the arena, throwing down with the vino. Thank you!

With regard to this episode, I really enjoyed the format of focusing on many selections from one winery. It certainly makes it easier for me to remember the producer, which means it’s more useful to me in the long run.

Thanks for all the great episodes. This one shows how a winemakers products can vary soo greatly, No one can get away by name alone.

Comment of the day—– Gary you constantly say you love Root Beer. I love Root Beer and also some great licorice (such as RJ’s from new zealand). Have the root beer episode— pair it with other foods like licorice. Compare it to some wines, they aren’t the same, but buth have their own profiles. JUST DO IT. Maybe you can give us a soft drink to drink on hot summer days when wine isn’t appropriate. Thanks

    Better show today!

I like that you tried six wines that people can get from Costco(even if I don’t shop there). It was a little strange to see that you went back and regarded wines due to the Cameron Hughes Stag’s Cabernet Sauvignon. But then again you have to stay true too your self.

Interesting breakdown of a seemingly popular “brand” of wine.

SOTD – I’m sure I’m not the only one with an unanswered email, and I’m so happy I’ve gone unanswered – it means you’re paying attention to Misha. Do me a favor and make sure that never ends. I only recently have started understanding how hard it must have been for my parents, because I was never without them. If I was home, so was at least one of them. I can’t thank them enough.

That being said, I still want to know:
    “Gary,
You mention constantly how scores don’t matter, and that you should trust your palate. Granted. You also, thankfully, acknowledge that people often buy wine by score, and that as much as that’s unfortunate – it’s your job as a critic to provide said score. The same goes for media, of course – video games, for example. No two people are going to like the same kinds of games. So, when Grand Theft Auto IV gets a rave review from 1UP, what does that really mean with respect to the game itself?
Enter Metacritic. Metacritic is a review aggregator that includes a wide variety of journalists’ opinions, as well as their score from 1-100. Now, it’s not one man’s score, it’s several dozen, all averaged into a “Metascore”. This has been great for consumers on the Steam platform particularly, because the Metascore is listed along with the product and price in their store.
I’m intrigued by the idea of a Metacritic / Metascore equivalent for wine. Include a range of wine critic’s opinions and scores, and compile them into a Wine Metascore, by which the consumer can better judge the overall quality of the wine. I’m curious what your thoughts would be toward something like that – do you think it’d be a good idea? Would it work?”

Sorry for the long comment! Cheers!

  236. June 27, 2009

    Rob Sieg

Loved the episode, Gary. How many times can you switch your scores on one wine?? :)

SOTD: Switch up your fashion a little bit. I’m all for the button up, and I want to give it all the love it needs, but as you said, we need to color outside the lines a little bit. Throw on a tie, or a hat, or even a scarf like that German Riesling dude a while back. Do an episode in a tuxedo. Who cares. (Actually, that’s not a bad idea for ep 700) But just show some variety. Big props to you for making those button ups your own, let’s see what else you can pull off.

    GV,

SOTD: I’ve got two suggestions…No. One – I know that you have touched on all aspects of the wine industry going so far as to make your own wine out of San Fransico. I’d like to see you go one step further and talk about growing your own grapes. Bring on someone who can talk about setting up your own vineyard. Now I’m not talking about buying a few acres locally and spending all of your childrens college fund to do it but allocating some parcel out in the backyard and taking it from there. Make it a ‘on site’ episode ala the wine cellar episode (one of my favorites). You could have fun and I think it would be well received.

No. Two – I know how things can quickly overwhelm you when a new child comes into your life and you start asking how can I fit everything in 24 hrs and still enjoy life. Well, allow us to help. I’d love for you to start outsourcing to us for local videos allowing us to report on the wines/wineries in our local area. Have a correspondent for Oklahoma, Idaho, Virgina, Arizona, Georgia, etc (the other 46)… and have them work the streets to find the best local wineries and see what they are producing all on video for Wine Library TV. Think of a format that would like to see and challenege us. I think that you’ll find many of us share your passion and would love to show our pride in our local wines.

    Cheers.

Gary, I’ve watched your show for about a year now. I have seen most of the episodes in the archives, too. I study wine extensively and really enjoy finding incredible deals on thunder brands. The most incredible deal lately was finding 36 bottles of 04 Branson Coach House Shiraz at 35 bones apiece. That wine blows me away and I have you to thank for it. I hope to make a pilgrimage to your store in Jersey soon. Much gratitude. Craig

Gary- first show I’ve watched in going on year, life has just got in the way. Great show, great to back. What I wanted to tell you: I’ve had some great wine in the last year and we bought a house yesterday….one step closer to my dream of a walk in wine cooler!

COTD – Bring the thunder… Down Under!.

Awesome string of shows Gary, the Saki shiz was off the hook… love the more ‘information/guest’ setup, pure reviews are obviously the hook, but the line & sinker are those types of shows for me.

lovin the effort either way though man… truly amazing!

Love the show, have been following since about dec 08. My faves are the ones where you nerd it up. I like learning new stuff, trying new things, and that’s where the show really shines. Keep it up Gary! And keep the attitude :) you rock!

I just recently found out about your show. It’s fantastic!! I really want to get into wine and you make it sound so easy and accessible. I plan on touring some vineyards out in Texas Hill Country pretty soon. Need to start developing my palate and nose!!

    Gary, Loved the C.H. show!!!!

I agree with a lot of the other comments re: your shows post baby have really brought an amazing amount of thunder. Its like your energy is back in full force because you have more things to be energized about!

PROS: You’ve been on a roll since you’re week off. Every show has been pretty much phenomenal. Will look forward to your content as long as you can pump it out.

CONS: As good as your chops have been, I look forward to the show every day and the “off air” days are a killer for morale. Also, I think the girl friend may be getting jealous for my attention. And bring back Sir Gary!

    Love the Wu-Tang reference… C.R.E.A.M! :)

SOTD: I had my girlfriend with me this time to enjoy the show. She is a first-time watcher of the “Thunder Show” and her statement for you is… She appreciated the recomendation of the Zin from today as a white wine drinker.

Are you coming to Portland during your signing tour this year?

    Thanks and best,

I got into wine about three years ago when I was given charge of the wine list at the country club where I work. I stumbled across your website while searching for a description of a wine I was featuring. I started watching the show and have been hooked ever since. It did a lot to increase my wine knowledge and to make wine not so intimidating. Now I am the one telling others all kinds of interesting tid-bits of info and doing my best to increase others wine knowledge and passion for the vino. Thanks for all the hard work to pump out quality and fun shows for us to enjoy.

PS People are always making a big deal about nothing, like the pouring out of a little wine while having fun. I agree with you GV sometimes you have got to color outside the lines and have alittle fun. Don’t stop having fun.

Great show. It’s good to see if the Costco brands are a true value. I have had the Cameron Hughes Syrah before and liked it. They have so many lots, I can’t even remember which one. Lot 53 perhaps?

SOTD: I totally understand your passion for your daughter. I never knew my soul could be rocked like that until I had my own daughter a year ago. Your world is no longer yours any more. People are always telling me she’s daddy’s little girl. It’s the other way around. I’m all hers.

I’ve been working at a wine and spirits shop since February and I’m enjoying the heck out of it. My favorite part is when repeat customers ask for my suggestions. It makes my day.

I’ve seen Cupcake wine from all over the world. I haven’t tried it but I see that it sells very well. I’ve had Black Elk, another private label wine and I enjoy their wines.

Gary – Interesting but frustrating. Why review wines that are not available? It would have been great to place an order for that Cab right after the show. That said, I am still a Vayniac and will so remain.

    Marc

Another great episode, Gary. Glad the wines got better as you went along: it’s always disappointing to finish on a downer.

What do I want? I want to build an amazing online sales system into my website and open the eyes of the world to everything the Australian wine world has to offer. We are seriously undersold.

Oh, and if everyone could stop killing each other, world peace would be nice too (if you don’t mind).

Great show, Great couple of shows.

SOTD: I love the randomness of the shows. Of course I will live some better than others. SO WHAT we wouldn’t have the “Great One’s” with out a klunker now and then. Keep the objectivity. I love the real reactions from you.

    Cheers, Tim

Entertaining and educational a usual. Always a good end to my day to catch the show :-)

    SOTD:
As a very long time viewer, just keep doing what you are happy doing. The show is your vehicle, just have fun with it. Stop went it is not fun for you anymore…
I would like to see a show on the current buying trends – i.e. recommendations on moving down as the belt it tightening (i.e. going from typical $20-30 to $10-20 price point). Given your access to wines, I think you should be able to suggest alternatives to people – if you have been buying this, consider this cheaper one and this alternative. I know you have been covering this a little in each episode but a show or 2 dedicated to it might be a real plus (one red and one for whites/sparkling?).

Also, where is the Sekt episode we talked about years ago? ;-)

Good show. Keep it up (like I really need to tell you that ;])

Can’t thank you enough for WLTV and all that you share with us. Love the loop of Beat It in the background, kept hearing the barely audible Eddie Van Halen guitar solo throughout the ep. Gary,

First off so grateful for you and your show. I can’t tell you how many hidden gems I’ve found by following your advice of “expand your palette”. For me though it’s not so much about the wine, as it is the people that gather around to share it with me, imagine all the conversations that wouldn’t happen if it weren’t for wine or food for that matter. Great wine and food is the means of gathering by rarely the point. Didnt want to get all deep on ya, anyway thanks for the show and the good times!

    hey Gary

First time I’ve seen the whole show. wow. You bring so much energy. Very interesting to see you review Cameron Hughes. i was introduced to them by a friend in the biz (Sales/Catering mgr for a private club) who told me what a deal CH wines are and how well they age, and that I can pick them up at Costco. After trying a few I was thrilled to find their website and join their email list. I have taken advantage of ordering several different lots that weren’t carried at my local Costco – that’s part of the deal – not everything is distribute everywhere and it is kind of random. Most of them have been good if not great, with only one or two I wasn’t crazy about.

    Keep up the good work.

Please do a root beer show and tea show!!! I also really enjoy beer shows too, I guess what I’m saying is I dont drink a lot of wine, mainly for financial reasons, but root beer and tea can be enjoyed anytime of day even at work! Oh yeah, and this episode was really good :)

Great episode as usual, Gary. Liked seeing a variety of wines from one brand. I like it when you have preconceived notions and then have to recant, it’s entertaining and goes to show that you can’t judge a wine until you’ve given it a whirl.

I just attended The Vintage Affair wine auction on Saturday, many wineries pouring their wares, and spread the gospel of Gary Vee far and wide.

Long time lurker, first time poster, love the show. I’m a college student from your neighbor state, the one that won’t let me have anything shipped in. That being the case, I am tired of every decently priced wine that you review, not being available in the PA Wines and Spirits catalog. Could you please recommend some vino for us Pennsylvania wine lovers.

    Jack Turner

Gary, Jack Turner, semi-lurker here. I have been watching for years, since you had your “scared” face on and no big intro…I really like the show and I really like it when you get into the wines. I have been finding myself disenchanted with a good deal of the shows recently, especially the ones with a web 2.o theme. Also, with the exception of you father [best guest ever] your guests usually take away from the program. I would love to see more “nerd” episodes and keep producing shows “on location”

  284. June 28, 2009

You called out the lurkers Gary, so here we are!

Great show, as usual – good to see you tasting some of “the people’s wine,” you know – the stuff you can get at a place like Costco without knowing too much about it!

SoTD: First thing first, you rock for being so willing to read comments, respond to tweets, read what people say at Facebook. It’s incredible that you’re able to keep up with people so well under such a deluge of people wanting to contact you, either because they’re fans or because they see business opportunities or because they just want to take your example. Do what you can and always stay authentic (not like you need someone to tell you this), it really makes you special when compared to a lot of other net personalities.

    Cheers!

    Hey Gary

QOTD: I want to talk about chinese wine. I live in HK and thus try to try as much Chinese wine as I can it is normally pretty terrible stuff. I went to a supermarket in China last weekend and the average price of a bottle of Chinese wine was about RMB35 (US$4), yet most of these wines were about ten years old. This is, I think, one of main problems with Chinese wine and it pisses me off. Cheap wine like this should NOT be cellered (normally in terrible conditions) for ten years. These wines are normally totally ruined when opened – burnt, alcoholic and well past their best, yet the drinking public in China has the idea that old wine is good wine and thus these wines keep being sold at this age. When you taste these wines their is faint hints of past fruit under all the fire and tar, yet this fruit would have been good eight yeats ago. So anyway the thing that is really annoying me at the moment is that I can’t try a Chinese wine at two years of age, when it would actually drink well…

    Cheers

Interesting idea for a show. Quite a variety of wines from Cameron Hughes. I like the idea of the Flying Winemaker. I will have to see if I can find them somewhere other than Costco as Colorado law does not allow Wine sales at chains (50-50 on if that is a good idea).

    GV:

Good episode. It felt like old school WLTV to me: great energy, really focused on the wine and the Vayniacs. Good stuff.

Since you asked for pros and cons, I’ll share my preferences:

    - Love it when you nerd it up. That doesn’t mean high-end cabs/Bordeaux; I mean when you do something obscure and/or ready focus on going deep and dropping knowledge.
    - Generally I like guest episodes, especially when its (1) someone famous or (2) a wine pro. Not so much when it’s novices (it’s not snobbery, I just find it a bit uncomfortable watching them because THEY seem uncomfortable trying to talk about wine).
    - Also, I like the change of scenery of your “on location” episodes. And if it helps you squeeze episodes into your busy life, all the better.
    - LOVE blind tasting episodes.
    - Like it when you taste with food.
    - Not a big fan of the occasional non-wine episodes (sake, beer)

Having said all that, I’ll cut you a ton of slack. You should do whatever energizes you about the show and whatever you can fit into your life. If you want to do an episode on pickles, fine. Have some Web 2.0 friend on, fine. As someone else said, I’d rather you mix it up or cut back than end it altogether. Keep it up. It is very much appreciated (even if the comment counts don’t always reflect it!).

Hi Gary! I have to admit that I cannot get away from watching daily your show. I watch it mostly to get a better knowledge of the new world wines – here in Europe you don’t get so many of f.ex. wines from Oregon and co., so I try to get myself updated with all means possible. Besides you make the show be a real ‘SHOW’ with your charisma and… ’somehow’ I got addicted to WineLibraryTv. I’m trying to get into wine business here in Barcelona, following the WSET educational system (got the intermediate cert., studying for the advance one now). I love wine, I feel truly inspired whenever I taste, listen or talk about it. I was lucky to live before in Germany, so I could try a lot of their rieslings and co., as well as a lot of Italian wines (as they’re broadly available there). Though for the moment, my biggest highlight was (is) ‘Clio 2003′ Jumilla. I guess this was the wine that change my perception and made my realize what I want to do with my life!

I appreciate your daily work (knowing you’ve just had a baby daughter), and the commitment. Hope you can go on and keep up the great work for a long, long time. All the best!

Great show, I especially appreciate the tastings of more accessible wines. Quicklist of pros/cons:

    PROS:
    * “Nerding it up”–I actually enjoy some of the more technical aspects from time to time and I’ve definitely learned a TON from the fraction of episodes I’ve watched–I’ve used that knowledge to go out and buy new wines and share them with friends;
    * Episodes with Sasha, some of my fav episodes feature him;

    CONS:
    * IMO, seems like there are too many episodes with celebrities who don’t contribute much insight into wine/wine tasting/etc. I understand the marketing appeal of having them on occasionally, but these have been some of my least favorite episodes

    SUGGESTION?
    * Maybe you’ve done videos like this and I need to search the archives, but I think it would be cool to have a few “How to” episodes, like a “how to taste wines”, “how to have a blind tasting party”, “how to store a modest wine collection at home”; sure there are hundreds of websites on these topics, but I think it would be cool to see your take on this. Here’s my modest attempt at wine storage: http://picasaweb.google.com/Jamie.L.Barger/WineRack)

Gary – I know this is two episodes late, but the sake episode still rings in my mind – loved it, makes me want to learn to make it actually, although I really would have loved some talk about sparkling sake – that Zipang you sell that KRose drank on Diggnation a year or so ago is the bomb. Keep up the good work.

GV, love the episode for 2 reasons (1) The Michael Jackson tribute and (2) the Wu-Tang reference on the Cab.

Statement of the Day: You’ve done an excellent job covering wines from all over the world within the $10 – $25 range, where you exploit value. I’d like to see one episode where you say value be damn, lets get Big-Baller. Taste some high-end cult Cali Cabs, first-growth french bordeauxs/burgundies, etc.

Hay dude, don’t want to take up much of your time but I just wanted to thank you again for taking the time out of your busy schedule to keep giving us WLTV episodes…you must really love us…THANKS!!

SOTD: Rock on! I would love to see a one or two bottle birth year wine show. Might get a bit pricey, but pull out the big boys and pick two that could last the long haul. Possibly pick one great bottle that you could taste a flight from ~10 years ago, and suggest saving the current vintage.

GV. Much love from a former lurker that now comments on every episode. Im still not sure if anyone reads my comments but thanks for giving us a forum. I am an absolute wine fanatic and WLTV junkie, I have also bought some stuff from WL.com, particularly love buying bottles that you have tasted and reviewed. Thanks for all of the great content and the dedication to us watchers. You are truly “Crushing It”

    Couple of things.
    1. I love blind tastings. It is where you separate yourself from every other wine tasting hack and it shows us what kind of level you are on in the winetasting world. PS. Do you think that your palate is the strongest that it will ever get, right now?
    2. I think that an great opportunity exists for you to do a show with a some ESPN morning guys that have exploded on the scene and gained extreme press in the last few years. Mike and Mike is a great show, and Mike Greenberg is a HUGE Jets fan. Eventhough they are a radio show, their show is simulcast on ESPN2. I think that it would be awesome to bring a little GV Thunder to a morning sports show. Maybe you could go on their show and then they could come on yours? I just think that your love of sports and their love of sports/characters/finer things might be something great to watch. PS you might get to meet some cool people at the ESPN studios too!

Keep rocking the internet and bringing the thunder.

Great episode!! Why did you remove the latest episode box from the bottom of your e-mails that you send out on wine sales. It has not changed in the last month. Please put the latest episodes back. (please)

    Gary,

Really great episode! I am going to look for that Cabernet. That’s a perfect price point for my wife and me. My only comment would be the following: I think you used to talk more about pairing the particular wine you’re tasting with food. I think you’ve sort of fallen away from that. Could you get back up on that horse? I really like your pairing ideas.

Gary, Do you think that a “life changing moment” either positive (like having a daughter) or negative (like losing someone special) changes your pallet for wine, and for other things?

    Hey Gary,
Great show, especially since I’ve been curious about Cameron Hughes for a while. You’ve been doing a great job in the thunder seat for a while, which is great. Love the wine geek episodes, the occasional in depth short shots, the blind tastings. I was about to email you to be sure you received my friend’s wine, Aum Cellars, a few months back, but I’ll follow up with you here – when is the bio-dynamic follow up to N. Joly coming? We’d love to be a part of it. Hope you spent far more time with Lizzy and Misha than WLTV this weekend and all is happy and well.

Never been to Costco (egad?)…and have not had Hughes on radar, but it is always interesting to see the variety across a producer’s line when the negociant angle is in play.

I see you are doing your thing GV, reaching out to heal a relationship…I hope your email to “@ Kell Brigan” works out for you. I pretty sure I know what you meant by the Thursday vs. Saturday, I pick wines in a similar fashion. It would never have crossed my mind to court my wife with that mentality though.

“Ryan Mac” may be on to something…the wine world IS changing and the Vayniacs could be mobilized to do some very interesting things.

OTD: We are a very fortunate group to be able to enjoy the luxury of fine wine, and to have the time for discourse about it. There are so many people in the world that have so much less, through no fault of their own. Some of them even helped to pick the grapes for us. The wine tastes even better when it is consumed with gratitude.

Gary, I can’t miss your shows, either, and I’m learning something new every time. Thank you for sharing yourself, your expertise, your friends (Mott!). The passing of all these public people this past week makes me thankful for my husband of 31 years, 4 beautiful children and 4 beautiful grandchildren. Keep your priorities right, and keep on bring us the thunder! I’m sharing it all with the precious people that keep me going everyday.

    Thank you.

I’m def. going to check out the Cameron Hughes wines. My new fave is K Vintners, just can’t get enough–gotta support the town I was born in! This weekend my bf and I went to Pinot Days in SF, another crazy tasting, but came away with a few to look for: Baxter in Anderson Valley and Kenneth Volk. Delicious.

Major lurker and twitter/facebook follower. You have been the single integral factor in the development of my wine knowledge. I have never taken a class or gone to a major convention but my friends are blown away by my food pairings and suggestions. Also, you remind me of me if I had a better family life growing up and if I had any motivation to turn my hobbies into a business. I have had many chances to do it but I lack the confidence and motivation. You are an inspiration and I would love to meet you as I live in NYC as well. anyways, that’s all.

I wish the BCLD (british columbia canada liquor store didn’t have a 100% wine tax hah)

I am 25 and I don’t have a facebook account or a twitter accounter I had a myspace for 3days like 2 / 3years ago. Im not a fan of web 2.0 for the personal life for sure I don’t need people knowing everything about me… For a business I think its ok. I like blogs.

Sometimes I wish I could find someone local to nerd it up wine style or atleast in my interests wine/food but hey thats life!

I continue to be amazed by the energy you are able to bring to every show. I am sure having a subject you are this passionate about helps. I think you do a great job of sharing a glimpse into personal life and self promotion (if you don’t do it no one else will). I think it is the knowledge and thunder you bring is what keeps people here for almost 700 episodes, and will keep people for as long as you keep going.
I think the earlier suggestions of “how to” episodes are great. The more you know, the more comfortable you feel…which leads to more enjoyment.

Another suggestion, combine the food play a little more (you mentioned in the sake episode that it is one of the few drinks you enjoy without food) The episode up in Boston was great the way it ties in with the food.

I am a big food network fan and it seems more show are out and about at different restaurants, what do you think about location shots from wine bars/more wine list and places people are enjoying wine.

I hope being a father is everything you dreamed it would be
    Thanks again

Lot 128? I think I might still have some Lot 3 or 4 in the cellar. I guess Cameron Hughes has been doing this for a while.

You’ve been doing this for a while, too. Coming up on Episode 700! Congratulations!

I have been with you, off and on, from about Episode 200. There have been some long stretches when life has gotten in the way, and my viewing has been spotty, or I watch episodes late (like this one — sorry to miss the weekend when you had some time to read comments). My commenting has gotten even spottier. I guess I’ve been doing more lurking than commenting lately. Sorry about that.

Nevertheless, for all of my spotty viewing and commenting, I appreciate what you do. Keep doing it! And thanks!

(Now if we could just get the shipping laws changed, so I could order wine from you and have it shipped to Illinois….)

Cameron Hughes is often good stuff I’ve found. Want to add one point for discussion: Cameron Hughes often suggests letting their big wines sit for several years. Is that unusual for value wines at lower price points? Seems like it could be used as an excuse for wine that isn’t drinking well young. I’ve had some of their wines that fall into that bucket for me. Shouldn’t wine drink well young even if tight or if it could benefit from time? It seems like they ask you to take the plunge and believe that they wine will improve, but you can’t enjoy the wine for a few years, and you could be set up for a real disappointment later. Or, is CH doing us a favor letting us know that the wine might not be great right now and if you want to enjoy something with dinner tonight, look elsewhere. How to interpret? And better question: for those who purchased early lots that CH communicated would benefit from time, how did they drink 2-3 years later?

    Gary,
I continue to be amazed at the freshness of the show after so many episodes. There is always something new to learn or enjoy about wine.

I do have one request. Can you mic your guests better? There is usually a big difference in volume between you and them. I like to listen at work during lunch, so I keep it turned down.

Thanks for reviewing CH Wines. I find that many are in the 85-88 range with the occasional exceptional wine. But I’m paying $12-$14 most of the time and the value is there.

It seems they are sourcing really good fruit, but don’t always get all the components of the original wines and/or don’t have time to barrel or bottle age the wines before release.

The lot 100 Cab does sound like a good value and I’m sure I’ll pick some up in the near future.

    Thanks,
    Scott

Just got around to seeing this after being out of town with my wife for our anniversary.

I will have to see if TN has any of these in the local stores. Especially the zin and cab! I wonder if we have a costco???

My SOTD is a QOTD. It may have been answered before but. What happens to all of the 1/2 – 3/4+ bottles of wine once you are finished tasting Gary? Does the staff at wine library get to come by and help “finish” them off? Hmm I have wanted to know that for a while and thought I would ask.

Gary – thanks alot for keeping up with the show with your busy schedule! I look forward to every episode.

SOTD- I know you fit in a few Finger Lakes wines from time to time. Love those episodes. It would be nice to see some more from time to time. I don’t know if you ever have, but you should also visit some of wineries out here in NY sometime. Finger Lakes rieslings are pretty nice in the summer time!! (they also do a few other grapes pretty nicely too)

    Thanks,

SOTD: had a chance to sell some wine for an independent distributor.. didn’t work out cause the guy was too full of himself (not enough time in my life for me to spend w/ a##holes). Anyway I really enjoy how you’ve brought wine back to “the masses” and just wanted to thank you for your passion, dedication and hard work.. it goes a long way, and keeps me thinking of how to Crush it in my world…
Also had a third left of a Magnum bottle of Chateau Marguaux Premier Grand Cru 1985 2 days ago and had nobody to share it with.. so sad.. maybe next time I’ll twitter it and see who hits me up..

SOTD: AHHHHHH!!!!! We need more wine variety in Vegas!!!! I just got into wine about a year ago, and I think I’ve already tasted everything worth tasting here… The thing that pisses me off the most, are the “specialty” wine shops that sell the exact same crap the local grocery stores do. What’s even worse, I throw down some cash to go to wine tastings, and what to they have? Yellow Tail, Fetzer, and loads of other crap (WOOOW! How Exotic!) Gary, you and your father have been talking up Portuguese wines for awhile, and I can’t find a bottle anywhere. Now, I’m sure I can go to one of the many fine restaurants here, and get something new, but I’d have to pay $20 a glass. Don’t get me wrong…Las Vegas is probably the best place to find good California wines outside of California (obviously), But can a brotha get some old world?!? AHHHHHH!! (Breathe Andrew, Breathe)…

GV, great episode on some wines that are readily available to most people. I was excited to hear that your tasting notes on the Stag’s Leap Cab – I will have to check that out. I have several (misguided) friends who think that Rodney Strong Cab is really good. I’ve been trying to find them an alternative that is ACTUALLY GOOD.

SOTD: Gary, I caught a freaking foul ball at the Indians/Reds game last Friday in Cleveland (one-handed, left hand). It was so freaking cool. I have been going to baseball games for 41 years and this was the first time that ever happened. Grady Sizemore hit the foul. I stumbled on your show about 6 months ago and have been a fan ever since. Thank you for entertaining me as well as helping me appreciate wine in an unsnobby way. I discovered this show recently and was instantly hooked. This was a truly outstanding episode. Anyone can wax wine nerd on $60 Burgundies. Not that I mind seeing that, quite the contrary. But this episode was particularly valuable because I have family and friends that are NOT into wine (my parents still drink White Zin out of the box) and I want to be able to share wines with them that they’ll appreciate and be able and willing to find/buy on their own. Great stuff!

I just want to say thank you.

Thank you for continuously pumping out episodes. Watching the episodes became an integral part of my day. Over the last years I have truly expanded my palate and gotten into new wines, thank you for your assistance in that. And I am still in touch with some of the ThunderCruisers, it was a great idea to arrange the event.

All that shows me that you have contributed to my life being as bright as it is.

    Gary:

You have a very good show. I would make a couple of recommendations to make it a little better.

    a) Pay more attention to pronunciations. You just mangle some very badly!

    b) Don’t interrupt guests as much. Take a hint from many radio and TV interviewers. Have them bring 5 questions and you paraphrase them in your inimitable. In that manner they get their points accross.

Be spontaneous as usual but keep a steady flow of information during the interview.

GV – I enjoyed the show. I thought that it was going to be a disaster at the beginning, but the last 2 wines provided some redemption.
I am a little late in getting these comments out, but I comment on all shows!

Statement – I heard MJ’s spiritual advisor, who happened to be a Rabbi, make a very serious statement regarding MJ’s death. It actually applies to more than just MJ.
His point was that MJ’s death was tragic in that a person so hounded by the media was being hounded in death by the media on the type of ceremony to hold to honor his life. The rabbi’s point was that this a time of mourning and reflection for the Jackson family, his children, and his close friends. However, it was turned into a circus.
Americans are far too caught up in media and celebrity. Focus on your family and their upbringing and doing good deeds for mankind. Who cares what Person X wore to the Oscars.

Looking forward to trying these out at Thanksgiving.
