    Nerd It Up!

    But dont forget the CKC’s!

QOTD: Dancing Bull Wines Merlot, picked it up at the packy to have with a friend over pizza(on the back it said it was good with pizza), the fruit was really in your face, we finished the bottle before the pizza guy arrived!

Have never tried a Santenay so I appreciated this show. Checked my local PA. Premium Collection Wine store and they did not have a single bottle of any Santenay in stock. If I drive half an hour to the next closest state store they have only a 2006 LOUIS LATOUR SANTENAY BLANC available for $22 bones.

QOTD: Sunday had a carafe of generic Lambrusco with dinner at a local Italian restaurant. Saturday I opened a 2007 Cab/Shiraz/Merlot blend called The Left Bank produced by Neil Ellis Wines from the Western Cape region of South Africa. On Friday it was a bottle of Americana Vineyards ‘Crystal Lake’ Niagara from the NY Finger Lakes region.

Nice and nerdy Gary! Enjoyed the show!! I like hearing about things you wouldn’t really see in most of the wine stores in my area.

My wife and I went to Asheville NC for our 11 year anniversary. I had a nice wine at Steak and Wine restaurant. It was Chateau Greysac 2004 Medoc. It was pretty good, but was digging the nose more on my wife’s 2007 Brancott. My wife even pulled a Gary on me and told me my wine smelled like band aids and dark cherries!! She’s awesome. The Greysac held up well with my prime rib! YUM!!

I love Santenays! I also love when you do a show on wines which are actually available up here in Montreal – and french wines we definitely do NOT have a shortage on..
QOTD: Tried the new Footbolt Shiraz from D’Arenberg (LOVE his wines..), as well as a nice Crozes Hermitage (i think it was a Pierre Gaillard, or some combination of producers.. can’t remember..)
3 more ’til 700!! GO GO GO!

2000 Les Pagodes de Cos was great 91 pts. Great 2nd wine in a Great vintage. “This is a very good little wine. Very earthy (poopy) nose that quickly blew off. Blackberrys and dark fruits focused on a well balanced frame. Tannins are very nice. Some spice and deeper earthy flavors make this a very enjoyable wine. Seems heavy on the Merlot??? Drink now and for 3-5 years…AMM”

QOTD. Ah, so many wines with our group! I opened a 2003 Quintarelli Ca del Merlo Bianco (great) and an awesome 1999 Altanza Reserva Especial Rioja. The best of the weekend may have been a 1997 Talbott Diamond-T Chard. MAN!!!

Too bad the Santenays didn’t really work. I enjoyed a 1995 Marc Colin 1er Cru La Comme not too long ago and it was drinking real nice.

    Keep up the nerd factor.

    Hey Gary,
Great show. I drank a SURU 2008 North Fork Shiraz Rose from Premium Wines in Long Island. It smells and tastes so much like yellow grapefruit – I love it. I drank it with some grilled clams and oysters.

The regional exploration is one of the many things that makes this program so valuable to the experienced and novice alike. I immediately sent the link to my business partner living in the Cote de Beaune so he can go on mission to find the source. Vayniacs can augment the info that GV provides by following up and doing some guerrilla reporting on the wineries and vineyards when they are traveling?

    QOTD:
We went to a really nice small wine & food event at a local restaurant( http://www.carpenterandmain.com )organized by a niche wine distributor ( http://www.artisanalcellars.com )in the neighborhood that we are friendly with. I was going to just list the wines but it would be a shame without the food – 13 small plates and 12 wines:
-made some quick notes afterwards 1+ to 5+ with a ( ) for extra special…
all very reasonable in price too!

Definitely like this type of show. There it is, the first of many baby smells. qotd, I had my first ever Cahors this weekend, the 2006 Chateau Haut-Monplaisir and it was awesome.

QOTD: Lots of 2004 Demessey Macon Cruzilles (Les Auvouries). SO I’m totally on board with the value Burgundy play.

Love the nerd shows! Places like Napa Valley, Australia and Bordeaux (although I love Bordeaux and it has lots of sub regions that are pretty unknown/nerdy like Fronsac, Barsac and most the dry whites) don’t really need any more attention. You should do a show on the “other” Nebbiolo wines of Peidmont like Gattinara and Ghemme. That would be SUPER nerdy.

QOTD: A Dr. Loosen Riesling Beerenauslese in a quarter bottle. Shouldn’t have drank it for another 20 years. But we had been drinking PBR all afternoon and it seemed like a good idea. Oops.

I’m good with wine nerd, Web 2.0 or guests.

Suggestion for upcoming shows – match them with the Tour de France – taste a wine / wines from the day’s stage. TdF Starts July 4…

QOTD: had the luck of tasting a Chateau Margaux Premier Grand Cru 1985, which was fantastic (as I was really trying to savour it and understand its complexity).. and Sunday some of my favorite non vino beverage.. a Mezcal-Benevá

First time poster, not too long time a lurker – great episode. Love the nerd stuff. I am still relatively new to working in a fancy upscale wine store in the northeast, and I love it. We carry several bottles of Santenay, red and white. I can’t afford to taste a lot of these fine wines. Plus, we don’t always get to taste. The wine world, especially old-world, is overwhelming to us newcomers. This was an enlightening episode – even within this small sub-region we see amazing variety in style and quality. More of these types of episodes would be awesome, even if I’m not learning about the specific bottles of wine with which I interact. Keep going.

qotd: la manarine cdr ‘06 (first day good, second day opened up very nicely, wish I could have let breathe more or possibly decant on first day, even for such a not-so-fancy bottle), dogfishhead 90, cuilleron syrah rose ‘08, dogfishhead ‘the squall’(interesting, good, but all over the place, maybe lacks focus)

I’m loving the episodes you do at home.

QOTD: Sunday was Jean Marc Lafage Cote Est (Catalan VDP Chard, marsanne, & grenache) that had white quartz minerality I loved and had with frog legs (first time since I was a kid!)… Saturday was Fixin 1er Cru Clos Napoleon Dom. Pierre Gelin and enjoyed it (horrible pairing with salmon salad “nicoise”… the burnt flavors of the wine made it feel like someone burnt the fish when they cooked it, but fun nonetheless).

Love the nerd episodes Gary! Keep them coming!

QOTD: This weekend, I enjoyed the 2005 Elias Mora Crianza. For the price, this wine is a serious kick in the face. Need to order more…Love it. I also chilled out on the deck with a nice cold Newcastle Brown Ale after working in the yard all day. It’s pretty toasty and humid now on FL’s gulf coast.

    Nerd it up!

QOTD: Damn, drank lots of wine! A Banfi Sango/Merlot that was horrible and an Oregon Pinot that rocked it!

Too young but after 24 hours open it was great…it was my first brunello.
