Awesome show, I’m definetly going to have to check out that Francois.

I tasted my first Santenay-Maladiere in 1967, a wine by Domaine G. Prieur imported by Monsieur Henri Wines Ltd, N.Y. N.Y..

Never really got to taste many more, choice was not great the southern part of NJ in the late 70’s and early 80’s.

Also I started my education in CA wine at the period, only going to old world for German Mosels and classed French Red at good prices ($24.00 for 1964 Latour),, never see that bargin again)

QOTD: Coors Original “The Banquet Beer”.

    Side Note:

If you want to nerd it up for me it would be dealing w/ a show that delves into German Rieslings. Really break down the differences between Auslese, Spatlese, Kabinet, etc…

QOTD: Lots of wine was had this Recital Weekend along with our Annual Commencement Dinner for our Music School. We brought our own wine in to the restaurant. Vie Di Romans Fleur di Uis, some inky, teeth-staining Peachy Canyon Petite Sirah, Reininger Helix Merlot, Charles Smith Red Devil Merlot, Kent Rasmussen Pinot Noir, Bracco Brunello di Montalcino, Bussola Amarone and a 2000 DellaForce Port–kind of like a mini-tasting.

Gary, this morning the Today Show had a segment on grilling. One of the items was Mussels and Pine Needles which might interest you.

My Statement of the Day. I opened some 2000 Puligny-Montrachet and it tasted like it was past it’s prime. I also opened an ‘02 which was much better. Luckily I only have a handful of older whites cellared which I will drink soon. What’s your recommendation on cellaring white wines?

    Hey GV!

Lala and I had our monthly wine club the CAWC (Classy Ass Wine Club)this weekend which is always a great time. We had Wormeldange Wousselt Riesling, 2006 Grand Bateau Blanc (That I won at Vayner Trivia on the Thunder Cruise)and a Tempranillo Crianza. Hope all is well. Take Care.

QOTD – Two wines this weekend, Donnhoff Brucke Riesling Spatlese 2003 (the shiznit, in a nerdy way) and Château Guiraud Le G Blanc Sec 2007 (Bordeaux, and it was a’ight)

Oh, and we recently had a white pinot noir from Spain and a dry pedro ximenez from Priorat – pretty damn nerdy. Didn’t like the white pinot at all but the px was great.

I was on a tear this weekend. awesome wines:

Francios Pinon “Cuvee Traditional” Vouvray 2007: Slammin. Twist of bitter, twinge of sugar.

Domaine de la Pepiere “Clos des Briords” Muscadet…, 2007: Perfect and crystalline.

Chateau Musar, Red “Gaston Hochar” 1997: Rediculously umami. A little hot, but pure pleasure.

Clos Roche Blanche “Cuvee Gamay” Touraine, 2008: Bubblegum, twigs, and cherries.

QOTD: La Comme, Ch Philippe Le Hardi Santenay. Can’t believe you did a show on my most favourite place in the world. I drove my car from Ireland to Santenay last summer for a nerdy wine vacation. I returned with 100 bottles of the precious stuff in the boot (trunk). Best show ever on the best place ever. I am soooooo impressed.

Excellent show, love these nerd’z episodes. These Santenay wines always get my attention but never thought they could bring thunders. I’ll try to find a good one here in Quebec. Really looking into expand my pal on these wines.

Esporao form Portugal. Kind of old world but great with Tri-tip. Rafanelli Zin was good but not mind bending for 40 bones. A few Pilner Urquelsesess. Does anyone know of a Pilsner like PU from a Microbrewy or anywhere that can bring the thunder?

  33. June 29, 2009

    Paryb

I think I’ll have to get a couple bottles of that 06 St Francois because I’ve got to use my free june shipping code, well like today!

QOTD: Had a couple gatherings with a bunch of folks in the last few days, this weekend, we had some 227 Cab (kinda candyesque for me, but drinkable) Terrazas Malbec (always a tasty tannic quaffer) some Tularosa Vineyards 2007 Cabernet (good, balanced, easy drinking) someone brought over J. Lohr Cab (meh, tatses like cabernet) and Rosemont Shiraz (meh taste like Shiraz) The best I’ve had was middle of the week last week, my buddy Chris and I decided it was high time to open the 2004 San Roman Toro. Holy Crap, it was like the La Brea Tar pits, mixed with the Smoke monster from Lost, then throw in some blackberries but roasted over a forest fire. Damn good wine, but a little freaky.
I highly suggest you try it though.

    Hi Gary V,
I really like you going towards more info about the wine, i feel like i would love to know what month it was harvested or the amount of brix in the wine at harvest.
Answer of the day: I had this chardonnay from a winery called “thousand island winery” it was their 2007. The tasting notes were all OAK MONSTER, but it tasted like fresh white wood with some saw dust on top followed with honeydew. They as well have the wine called “Frontenac” which is a red sweet wine 5%RS and had some very nice plum action as Mr. V. would say.
Maybe you will do a show with these wines i would love to see what you think of them and to see to make the oak monster face.
    Thanks,
    Mickey

QOTD: Duplin Carolina Hatteras Red, a non-vintage ’sweet muscadine wine’ a client gave to my husband (they spend part of the year down there). Very light, but a pleasant, easy drinker.
Reminded me of a Lambrusco, but without the bubbles.

Gary – good episode, appreciated learning about Santenay, which I knew nothing about. Was a little surprised you scored the last wine 86 points, it seemed like you were going to go lower. Must have been that pomegranate on the back-end!

Nice episode. I love the geeky ones. I’m just a hair disappointed that the Santenay’s didn’t come out a little better. I’ve been trying to grab a few Old World Burgundies lately, and I’ve definitely never had a Santenay before. I was hoping there was value to be had. The Saint Francois didn’t seem like my kind of play, though, so at the moment I think Santenay will stay in my “never tried” list.

QOTD: I had Torre 2005 Sangiovese Di Romagna Riserva. At 18 bones, it wasn’t bad. Good round wine with a solid finish. Some vanilla, some good strawberry notes, and little bit of earthiness in there. Didn’t blow me away, but held it’s own. Also had some Sebastiani Chardonnay as a easy-drinking white with dinner Saturday night. Don’t know the vintage, but it doesn’t really matter.

Not a fumble… I would invoke the tuck rule.

Best saying of the episode… “Very thin… like Lindsay Lohan up in here” She probably will decline your invitation to be a guest on a future show but then again, that wouldn’t keep with the nerd theme.

QOTD: Sangria (Lots of fresh fruit, some Triple Sec, and a Willamette Valley Rose)
    New Belgium Skinny Dip Ale
    Widmer Broken Halo IPA

P.S. Get Mott some camera time… have him guest host a show!

Great episode, keep up the nerd, amp it up for that matter; I’d be down!
QOTD, had pimento (http://www.miamz.fr/tag/boisson-piment/) for the first time, tasted really good, with that spicy kick on the end that lingered for a nice long while. The night ended with straight gordon’s, which I appreciated much less… Some delicious beer though (I’m trying all the amber beers I can find) page 24 and ninkasi (the french brewery, not the oregon one.) Ninkasi amber is probably my favorite beer out the the dozens I’ve been tasting as of late.

Like the nerdy. I don’t drink a lot of Santenay as the tastes are not classic burgundy to me. I like Chinon so the more inexpensive one may be appealing and I know I’ve never had white Santenay. This weekend was mostly Frexinet
Cava with one Montepuciano de Abbruzo bot I don’t know who made it as it was not my bottle.

QOTD: Tazo China green-tips green tea.

Gary, it would be really cool if you brought a tea expert on your show and sampled some killer teas. Think of all the varitions: hot, cold, w/ w/o milk or sugar, leaf based, fruit/flower based. It would be nerdy, educational, and very unique.

You call that nerdy? This is Burgundy! I gotta call it like I see it, this show scored low for me. Not the topic but the content. No background on the producers or the sites or the difference between ‘05 and ‘06 in Burgundy, etc.

I’m surprised that pronouncing Francois was a problem, pretty common name in FRANCE. ;-)

Later that night some nasty vodka in jello shots, screw drivers, keystone from a keg.
Sunday night i opened a bottle of Shiraz that was pretty meh. all the reason i dont remember what its called.

good stuff gary. like the nerd info and shenanigans. my fiancee and i had an edelweiss snowfresh beer and a brooklyn black chocolate stout. and an inniskillin (okanagan bc) malbec which was good. compared to cahors and argentina, it was somewhere in the middle with fruit and earthiness, with some great tannins, nice chocolate and tobacco, and good fresh fruit. especially on the finish, which after about 2 min my mouth felt like i just bit into a fresh raspberry. that was the kicker for that wine.

    Thomas Moore

I really like how the shows are going. I have NEVER even heard of these wines and I am excited to find them.

Regarding the web 2.0 comment from one of the listeners – DON’T EVER STOP THAT!! That is how I ended up becoming a Vayniac in the first place! I never even drank wine before I watched the show…..and now I have tried many kinds of wine since becoming an avid listener. Its all about expanding your pallet!!

Just keep doing what your doing.

    I LOVE THE NERD STUFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Great show!

Gary fumbles the ball, but not the wine! (He does fumble accents however)

It’s Franssssssois. That’s why you have the dingy under the “c”, ç.

QOTD: I had a Château Simard, St. Émilion, 1998, which was great! It still has a lot of potential for the coming years. (I still have 3 bottles tucked away…)

    Keep up the good work!

    QOTD: Moshin Pinot Noir

Love the show! I watch to learn and learn I do!
I have recently gotten into Italian, especially Nebbiolo. Even watching some of your past episodes. I am so glad you no longer have those obnoxious comment pop ups.
What about a show explaining the difference between a Nebbiolo, Barolo and Barberesco since they are all the Nebbiolo grape. I don’t get it.

Thanks for the time you spend doing this show. I appreciate Lizzy and Misha letting you keep this on your already full plate.

Gary, I’m a huge fan of grilling, the London Broil from Citarella is excellent, tender, perfect with a bottle of the 2006 Dusky Goose.

QOTD: I appreciate the nerd shows quite a lot. I drank 2006 Dusky Goose, damn good bottle of wine.

QOTD 2008 Château Bélingard Bergerac Rosé

    Hey Gary,

Question of the day: I drank a Joose (energy blend + 9.9 alcohol) and a Corona…

I really want to try that first white you had, Domaine Vincent Beaurepaire Santenay – so once I get that free $50 ;-)

Thanks for this episode, I’m learning tons. I’m actually gonna bbq some steaks today, so my question for you: What type of (red I assume) wine would go good with bbq steak?

  99. June 29, 2009

    Thomas D.

Good episode. Although, I didn’t really notice how most of the other episodes were any less nerdy. I suppose it may be just in terms of the relative obscurity of the wines.

    Anyhow,

    QOTD:

2007 Rosemount Shiraz – Australia (admittedly bought because the bottle had a square bottom)

2007 Jackson-Triggs Dry Riesling – Okanagan (as part of my independent study on Canadian Rieslings to see how well this north-climate varietal does up here)

    QOTD:
Friday: a lot: Moscato d’asti, some home made beer, a cheap Spanish Merlot, a much better Barbaresco, a number of other beers, stout mostly, homemade Schnaps (that is vodka added with different herbs and given some time in the bottle)
Saturday: only a glass or two of Domain la Soumade Rasteau Cuvée Prestige 2004. Sunday: Giano Prosecco from Vinsac, and some Val de Loire Chardonnay from Domain de Lorière. The Soumade was definitely the best of the bunch.

    Gary,

Enjoyed the show, love Burgundy, but it doesn’t sound like I need to rush out to find some Santenay.

You’re killing me with the Fran-kos. Seriously, that little thing hanging below the C, means call him Fran-swah, as in Francis and France. Sorry man, I can’t let that go.

QOTD: This weekend I nerded it up with some 2005 Mastroberardino – Lacryma Christi Del Vesuvio Bianco. Pretty delicious.

Also, congrats on your little girl. My wife and I are expecting our first in October. It’s a boy and we need name sugggestions! Sorry, “Gary” is already taken in the family.

Nice episode. Fact of the matter is I have been loving wine for near on a decade and French wine is still intimidating.

QOD- summer is Sav. Blanc time for me….did an in-house comparison of Kim Crawford ‘07 vs Nobilo Icon ‘07 and Spineyback ‘08….Spineyback with the big grapefruit was my winner

QOTD: Well, let’s see: what did I drink this weekend. Friends opened a 2005 Caymus Cab. (nice to have such friends!….) Also had a 2007 Piesporter (alas, I can’t recall the producer), the Ruston 2005 Cab and the 2006 Via Alta Garnacha. A good weekend.

It’s true, i’ve never had Santenay wines but have seen them in wine club catalogs, I just don’t belong to any.

QOTD: We had a bottle of “Marqués De Cáceres Rioja white 2003″ for dinner and it was very very good, we paired it with dates, apples, dark chocolate, mangoes with cinnamon and chicken salad; a very nice date night.

I was wondering if you should not standardize to a single glass type. After your comment during the Sake episode that you did notice glass shape/size can make a different, should you not standardize?

QOD – PBR, Shelburne Vinyard (VT) 08 Cote de Champlain (Cayuga, reisling, Chard), Sam Adams Light (sorry can’t remember the Shiraz I am a drinker not a thinker)

    PrimoVino

First off, thank you for reading my comment on the show today! Secondly, I laughed my @$$ off when you “fumbled” the comments paper and bounced it off your head. That was priceless! Were you tasting (a lot) before the show? :) Good work!

GV Recommendation: How about you invite Bobby Flay on the show as a guest and do some tasting and pairing of wines that go well with grilled foods. Maybe you could do an outside show where you guys grill and taste. As I’m sure you know, Bobby is a native New Yorker and I believe he has a restaurant in New Jersey. I think it would make for an AWESOME show and the dynamic of you two together could be epic. Just a thought since you mentioned grilling.

QOTD: I opened this RADICAL bottle from Trefethen that they call “OKD” presumably because they are in the Oak Knoll District. It rocked my socks off. (Malbec, Petit Verdot, Cab Sauv)

    Best,

2000 Castelgiocondo (Marchesi de’ Frescobaldi) Brunello di Montalcino which was very tasty indeed. Aging nicely and drinking well now :-)

    Arbor Mist Blackberry Merlot
    Cannon River Graciela
    Jonesy Port

    Hey Gary

Love the ‘wine nerd’ shows, great style.

QOTD: Zema Estate Coonawarra Cabernet 2004, some average rose by the glass at a restaurant, Kiran beer and Sunday I went to a brunch buffet so several glasses of poor quaility, too sweet sparkling wine from California.

    Cheers

I’m finding that most of my 2005 Red Burgundies are locked down hard these days. I wonder if some of that was going on here… I won’t be opening them for quite some time until they reemerge from their slumber (2015?).

QOTD: Had some wine geeks come over on Friday and we had some decent stuff… 1990 Ponzi Vineyards Pinot Noir Anniversary Reserve, both 1988 and 1989 Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape and we closed it out with a 2000 Fritz Haag Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese. Yummy.

Great dirty nerdy show today. Keep ‘em coming! Also, you might want to venture into the nerdiness of wine and food pairing. You often say this would go great with mussels or clams but a show specific to a type of cuisine would be well, kinda nerdy and alot of fun. Red wines with fish, of course.

    QOTD
    1) ‘07 Simone SB (Chile)
    2) ‘07 Monmoussea Vouvray (FR)
    3) ‘06 Eilenz Ayler Kupp Kabinett Riesling (Germany)
    4) ‘08 Opaline Rose (Beaujolais)
    5) ‘07 Henry’s Drive Pillar Box Red

P.S. More like a Willie Joe kinda pass! ;)

    Cheers!

I am definitely a griller, especially now bbq season is upon us. With Burgundy such a minefield in terms of both price and quality, I’ve recently found Santenay to be a more reliable “value” from this region, and have yet to be a disappointed. Interesting to see such a mixed bag on the show.

Though I have loved some of the guests you’ve had on, I was a bit overwhelmed by the number of guests in past weeks/months, so I’m glad there’s been something of a return to the individual, more personal episodes, really getting into a few wines or exposing quirky or unheard-of wines to the masses.

QOTD: This weekend we had a 2004 Marques de Vargas Rioja Reserva – pretty good stuff, actually.

  119. June 29, 2009

GV, great show, I am glad you go back to pure education baby, mixed with your humour and energy it’s the best cocktail.
While you are open to feedback: when will we have google earth type interactive maps popping up to show the regions you are talking about ? I could picture some “Map that up Mott” flowing pretty good there.

QOTD: Hennessy Private Reserve 1865, Hennessy X.O, Ardberg single malt (Islay) Ugedail. Smoke me up buttercup.

  120. June 29, 2009

    David Benjamin

QOTD: I drank skyy vodka with a splash of grape cranberry juice. Very good, light and easy drinking. Your show today caused me to pause half way through an pour a glass of Shiraz. You made me thirsty for wine with the one’s that you reviewed. Job well done!

  121. June 29, 2009

    Shawn_944

Good Show GV, I have not had a Santenay yet, but it will be added to my list of wine i must try.

QOTD: This past weekend I enjoyed a Pinot Nior From British Columbia which screamed of pig, smelled and tasted like ham… not sure if i was really into it but it is all good, expanding my palate. Also had one of my favorite white blend from BC as well “Anastasia” from La Frenz, just a great fruit filled white wine, nice crisp and clean.

  122. June 29, 2009

    Phil M'Glassup

YES! This is the groove we like.
By the way, as instructed, e-mailed my comment to Mott (and you). No response.

  129. June 29, 2009

    BillC

QOTD: I drank a bottle of 2006 Trader Joe’s Reserve Petit Verdot from Paso Robles.
It wasn’t too great the first day, even after being opened several hours. However, I vacuum sealed it and drank the rest the next day and it had opened up very well. A very nice wine with good value at $9.99. TJ’s doesn’t offer Petit Verdot often and they sell out quickly. Would be curious to see what other Vayniacs think. Remember to decant for many hours, if not over night.
BTW, could you comment on aerators such as the Vinturi? Do you think they work? The rest of my family swears the Vinturi makes a huge difference but I can’t detect any change. I did a blind tasting and I was the only one who failed to see improvement.
Thanks for the show, it’s the highlight of my evenings. Great job.

  130. June 29, 2009

    bt86

Really appreciate the nerdy shows. I feel like I’m getting a decent grip on Cali, French Bordeaux & Rhone, but Burgandy continues to elude me. With your suggestions it really helps me expand my palate a bit(like the show at Cru too).

QOTD: Had an 06 Rudd Crossroads on my date night for my wife’s 30th birthday. It tasted way better at the winery a few months back than this Friday, I think it still needs time to come together. Probably got a lot more air-time at the winery…won’t touch another for at least 2 years.

  131. June 29, 2009

    KenP

This ep brought me back to WLTV. However, the nerdy thing to do is mention when the Burgundy wines might be ready to drink. A 2005 or 2006? Not proper. Still, I loved the ep. Just to put the word, the AOC, into circulation is satisfaction enough.

QOTD: A ‘78 Pontet-Canet. Quite durable. Begs the question about the Burgundies.

  132. June 29, 2009

    nicko

QOTD: Dr. Pepper on the rocks and it was so good.

    Tom Langan

Thanks for immortalizing me in Episode 697 by reading my comment, GV! This was the type of show that the Vayniacs all love. This is what we signed on full time for.

When are we going to produce another wine together. Can’t wait for the Vaniac Cab this fall!

QOTD: Drank the Barrandica Mendoza that you recommended and loved it.

    Gary,
New watcher. Loving the show. Nerd it up. Played Bar Golf this weekend, so drank shots till the 16th hole. Passed out. Best hole was Don Julio Blanc tequila followed by a tomato juice shot. Recommended by a great bartender and was fantastic!!!

  136. June 29, 2009

    Gus Clemens

QOTD: Becker Vineyards Iconoclast — easy drinking red wine from Texas Hill Country; black cherry, raspberries. Did I mention easy drinking? Nice label, too, featuring self-portrait of iconoclastic Becker family friend, Tony Bell. I never buy wine for the label, but it is a value added when nice. Available only in Texas.

Geek is good, do more, but keep Mott around and production values up. Good sound and good video camera work are nothing to be ashamed of.

I love the nerd shows, but I’m not as picky as some people seem to be about what I learn when I watch. Especially since your last guest was so damn good. Bringing in guys that are passionate about absinthe or sake or beer (or tea – I can’t believe you haven’t done a tea episode yet) is awesome, because to me the show is about sharing your passion more than it is about wine.

QOTD: Airlie 7 2006, a sweet white blend of 7 different varietals from Willamette Valley, and some icy cold Sols with lime wedges. Two very very good summer beverages.

  138. June 29, 2009

    Ian L

Nice way to nerd it up. True to the nerdy terrior.

    QOTD:
Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label Brut NV – it was a gift from one of my relatives to my parents for their 25th Wedding Anniversary. Kind ‘meh’ for me.

2006 Grant Burges Barossa Vines Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot – Too thin and lack of structure for me. Again, it was a gift.

Great show, as i’m a big burgundy lover, but have to confess I have never tried a santany yet. But i’m gonna seek one out asap. Do you think you were being a little tough in the scoring? Despite saying “I like this wine” maybe 10x, the Francois (pronounced Fran-swaw, not Fran-sio) only merited a 90? I could care less about the numbers, but curious if preconceptions are weighting your final conclusions a bit. Maybe some more double-blind tastings for fun?

Qotd: mostly water this weekend, as it was absurdly hot in Northern Cali, but I did have a glass of Imagery’s White Burgundy 07, which despite the trademark violating name, is a pretty good wine, backing up the buttery chard with a little stone fruit and acid pinot gris. A neighbor graciously shared it with me, along with some baby salad greens we picked from the garden. Not a bad way to close out the weekend.

Good show Gary, agree with the comments and would like to see the nerd level increase in the shows.

05 Catena Alta Malbec, very good but not as good some past vintages
06 Woodward Canyon Artist, disjointed early but knit together, needs 3 years
05 Shirvington Cabernet, surprisingly restrained wine from this producer
06 Mas de Boislauzon Quet ChndP, Winner! cherry kirsch flavors
06 Penner-Ash Shea Pinot, could’ve been better, many other better values from 06
    Oregon Pinot to be had

    GaryV–

Loving the nerdy episodes..keep ‘em coming.

QOTD: My little sister turned 21 this weekend and she’s a fan of the Mike’s Hard Lemonade. So I swallowed my pride and had a Mike’s Hard Limeaid drink with her. And to my surprise, it wasn’t all that bad. But it may just have been the good company.

Keep pumping these out, I’ve been watching for a good long time. All the best,

    Jeff S.

I enjoyed a cold glass of Strongbow and a couple beers from a local brewery, Robert Simpson. Good stuff! The folks just got back from Niagara Falls and we’ve got a dozen or so bottles to test out from the area so that should make for an interesting couple of weeks.

Great show Gary, now find a guest to bounce the nerd-talk off of and you’ve returned to the classic show format I love.

    AUSSIE SAMMY S

Love the nerdiness GV – these are the eps I’ve been hanging for.

I love the indepth wine talk from the unknown areas for the world…it really shows the diversity that varietals can have from different regions..especially the unknown, less popular regions…Why don’t you a Shiraz tasting from the Goulburn Valley of Central Victoria, Aus..Tahbilk, Mitchelton or a shiraz thats not from the B V of McLaren Vale.

qotd…2008 Jacobs Creek Chardonnay..I had cream based pasta dish & needed a Chardy to go with it..wasnt in the mood for drinking a whole bottle so all I could find was a 375ml btl of JC Chardy..typcial stock standard AUS chard..

QOTD..Had a 1996 Bordeaux (Chateau Lascombes). How’s that for nerdy? I had in my notes that Parker gave this wine an 80 way back when. After about an hour, it really opened up and was quite nice in my book.

I had some Old Speckled Hen and and a bottle of Rogue Chocolate Stout. Even though both were a bit more expensive than other beers in their class, I would definitely recommend both.

great show Gary! love the nerdy shows. keep em coming. wines this weekend: Jouget Chinon Rose” Tab las Creek tannat. clos roche blanche Cuvee cot on friday night. Ironic that the whole twitter string with Alice Feiring happened right after I had the 2006 Cot. 2006 cot very tight but somehow I liked it. drank the whole bottle with my wife. Can’t help but think that there is potential in there. maybe in five years, it will shine. know you hated the vintage from show a couple of years ago. Have you had the 2006?

  156. June 29, 2009

    J Crazy

Had some Shuroku Honnama Genshu: OK but a little too sweet for me.
Also had a bottle of 2007 Clos Du Roy Vin Blanc Sec that really sucked. Overall it wasn’t the best weekend for booze but I was with my wife enjoying some quality DVD time trying to fend off a cold so it all worked out for the best.

  157. June 29, 2009

I Had some New Castle brown ale and some Guinness both on tap.. good stuff..

I kinda like Santenay, but would generally prefer Volnay as what I would consider its closest competitor in Burgundy. To me, Santenay is characterized by dark, sour cherry, considerable minerality, and rare, but occasional barnyard “poop”, and rustic…..most of which require a “learned experienced” to appreciate. I prefer Volnay because of what I perceive as more fruit and less rusticity.

QOTD: Sunday night, I hosted my Sunday School summer party, and served Heron Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon yesterday, which I think are very good “value value” wines. Therefore I was miles away from “Nerdy Wines.” Nevertheless, I would have to consider myself deep in the “Nerdy” category for the wines I prefer to serve and drink in groups less than 100 people.

I absolutely agree on the Kermit Lynch call- I had a great unoaked chard loaded with acidity from Burgundy myself recently, I believe imported by Lynch (2006 Domaine de la Cadette Bourgogne Vézelay La Châtelaine)- I can’t stand oaked chard.

You should do a flip-cam episode with wine next to the grill!

QOTD: no wine, but had some Shiner Bock

    urbansandz

Gary, I’m glad you read the first letter of today’s show. I couldn’t agree more with the author. I too feel that your guests actually take away from your show, which is too bad but it’s the reality. I also agree that the episodes where you educate your audience are your best. I too find myself skipping a lot of episodes recently, but I stopped to watch today’s because it was about a region I hadn’t heard of.

  163. June 29, 2009

I never thought of “nerdy” as a good thing, until today’s episode. Thanks for the insight and info as I study for my sommelier exam coming up!

QOTD: I drank a ‘99 Manfred Weiss Grand Cru Schoenenbourg Riesling, which rocked my world, like Michael Jackson…and a couple other not-so-memorable vinos.

Chuk, I think from now on I will call you Chuk because that’s probably what i would call you if we were amigos. I am new to your wine library experience and I LOVE IT! The only con so far is that you are costing me my beauty rest(not that it helps anyway). I get geared up and sometimes watch until 3 or 4am.
QOTD: I drank a few different wines from Veramonte in the Casablanca Valley of Chile. Good wine and specifically I am polishing off the 2006 Merlot Reserve.

  166. June 29, 2009

    Todd Smith

QOTD – No wine this weekend; I had some Stone IPA, Stoudt’s Brewery Pils and negroni, which is an Italian drink composed of equal parts Campari, gin and sweet vermouth on the rocks – I rarely drink liquor but I love this drink for the bitter/dry qualities.
Love the nerdy episodes. It’s great viewers want to learn more. That’s one reason I fell in love with wine – you can spend your whole life immersed in it and never stop learning. Plus, things change every year; vintages, terrior, weather, etc. Fun!

  167. June 29, 2009

    JLove

Hey Gary great episode, really love when you lay the “geek” on us! Wanted to mention a movie my fiance and I just finished on netfix instant. It was called John Cleese’s Wine for the Confused. It was overall a lot of fun and did a great job at dispelling some of the wine stereotypes that are out there. Great movie for anyone just starting into wine that may be feeling a bit overwhelmed. Again, keep the geek coming we all love it!

QOTD: Drinking Genie by Muse winery (www.musewinery.com), White blend with great balance of fruit and acidity. Perfect for the 100+ degree days we are having in the California central valley.

    Gary,

Looking forward to seeing you work the grill and throw down some solid recipes for the Vaynernation. This summer has found me experimenting with cabernet and oregano marinades for burgers. Keep up the great work and please continue to nerd it up.

    Christopher Scoggin

    Nerd it up!

    QOTD: Woot Cellars Triacipedis
Not a white drinker so I can’t say it’s good or bad but liked it well enough. A little hot for me and tonnes of acid from what I can remember.

  171. June 30, 2009

    Mandy

I have been such the lurky lurker for awhile and I feel bad about that but I am working on my confidence as a 22 year old wine drinker. However, the QOTD has pulled me out of my shell. This weekend I made myself a bloody mary with clamato; extra spicy with fresh limes, lots of pepper. Very delicious and one of only a few mixed drinks I actually care for.

  172. June 30, 2009

    Michael Clark

Good show as always Gary, inspiring and passionate.

QOTD: Just an inexpensive bottle of Concannon 2006 Syrah but it was good enough for a quiet weekend alone.

  173. June 30, 2009

    Patrick Horn

I Love the passion, I love the description of the wines as well as the honesty. I wish I could drink as much as Gary does but can’t so I’ll just be a voyeur. This show is more toned down than most in terms of Gary’s personality. I like it, less WWF and over the top like a full throttle Aussie Shiraz and more in keeping with the type of wine Gary likes: a well balanced one. One suggestion: getting the pronunciation correct is as important as any sort of historical/contextual background description given with a wine. ie: François (fran-swaa not fran-koh) or Barossa (Bar-raw-suh not Bar-roe-suh).

  174. June 30, 2009

    @wendywhy

I love the education that I get from watching your show-even the ones that aren’t ‘nerdy’. I enjoy your expressions and honest opinions. I am such a novice about wines that even though I like to shop for them I feel overwhelmed at most stores.
I realize during the tasting process the necessity of spitting but I get a little thrill when you enjoy a wine so much that you don’t. Crazy, huh?
Anyway, keep up the good work. Every one of your shows are informative and entertaining.
QOTD-iced tea. I have some wines that I bought because they were highly rated and I thought they would be interesting, but I’m working up to them because I am intimidated!

Great show. I appreciate the nerdism! For someone like myself trying to get a better grasp on the old world style wines this show was a homerun.

I’m a two year watcher who has posted a couple of times, so I thought I’d make a few comments on your “Nerd Show” episode.

    1. Gary – when you buy the Jets try not to show your QB the “Statue of Liberty” play.
    2. “That was a Brett Farve pass.” is the funniest thing Mott has said in the two years I’ve been watching WLTV, and it was an ad-lib.
    3. “Kansas Farm Action”…I’m from Kansas, so what does a city slicker like you know about Kansas Farm Action?
    4. When are you gonna have a wrestler on WLTV?

  181. June 30, 2009

    Eric Godfrey

GV–Being the self proclaimed “Wine Geek” that I have become, I am LOVING the “Nerdisms”…Sanatanay, to me, is a better producer of their high end whites, as opposed to their sometimes disappointing pinots. I have had the pleasure of trying the Dom. Vincent Beaurepaire Sant Blanc ‘05…If you can get your hands on it, do yourself a MAJOR favor and drink it with Lizzie!

QOTD–This weekend I had the opportunity to drink a Domaine St. Gayan Rastaeu…Certainly affordable to the average joe, and to me, EXTREMELY surprising on the palate. Kinda felt like somewhat “new world” fruit blended with the earthiness & fungal components of the classic old world burgundies that you & I are accostomed to…Certainly a good play for you to look into. Hope all is well on the home front, my brotha!

I love santenay….if i had it my way, i’d ask u to do a burgundy month and cover every village in the

.I think that would be rad.

You could cover two villages per day…and hit em’ all f!!!!!!!

    apj_bobswineguy

STOP (at the 3:30 mark) – Love your father but disagree w/ the rest of Jack’s comment about guests. Some of the best shows are you interacting w/ a guest.
There are so many memorable moments. From the celebs to the wine geek sommeliers to just regular type folks.
Sure there are some misses, but overall the mix of guests, flip cams on the road & wine geek stuff by yourself makes this the THUNDER SHOW!!!

  186. June 30, 2009

    Drew Ross (vinoBlue)

The engineer in me loves it when you nerd it up! Picked strawberries this morning; I made the whole house smell like hot jam – reminded me of some Pinos I’ve had lately.

QOTD: Today I opened up a bottle of Gigi Rosso Dolcetto di Diano d’Alba ‘06. It has very forward fruit on the nose, with floral hints on the nose. The initial attack is fruit forward, but the finish is quite dry and tannic. New world fruit with old world structure – interesting play for my first Dolcetto.

    QOTD:

    White & Nerdy.
QOTD: Had a delicious “local” rose this weekend.

    Hugh McCabe

Love the nerd episodes. Espiecially with your “international” wines. We get very few North American wines in New Zealand, so I don’t tend to watch your US wine shows as impossible to get. However we’re well served with European and South American wines, quite apart from our Australasian wines. Your shows have encouraged me to try more intersting wies from these regions. Just love Loire Reds for instance.
Last weekend was in Queenstown so tried central Otago pinot noir. Gibbston 2007 PN excellent, no so hot on the Amisfield 2007. Watched the bungy jumping but at $165 a jump told them I would prefer 4 bottles of Gibbston PN!

  192. June 30, 2009

    Steven

I had an easy drinking Chard by Penfolds and a nice 2003 Cru bourgois by Chateau Lousteauneuf which I really liked. It was a fruit meets spice thing going on…

You should really get some high-end German pinot noirs on the show. I think those are worth a try. Anyway I used to life at Chicago (some years ago) and remember it was hard to find German reds in the US. It seemed strange to me that I was offered a lot of Gewürztraminer when I was asking for German wines which is not the most favored varietal over here.

    Regards from Germany

    Matt T.

Love the nerdy-ness today Gary. Keep it up.

    QOTD:

Went a little old school today(for me anyway), and had a Rutherford Hill Merlot 03. Definitely such interesting Cherry/Plum play, A little too much acidity but nothing a little aeration didn’t fix.

Oh tried the Roots from your hotel eps. not the greatest but definitely worth trying just for the experience, and worth the six bones(no more).

Good review and keep up the nerdy! :-)

    Great Show, Gary!
I’ve been watching (from europe ‘Belgium’) since episode 400 and have learned a lot of new cool wines from you.
Watching out for the white santenay…

QOTD: I had a pretty nice weekend. Started of Friday with a ‘07 Mahi Sauvignon Blanc NZ
    On Saterday 2 Sancerre’s from Henri Bourgeois: La Bourgeoise ‘03 & Cuvee d’Antan ‘02.
Sunday a Hubert Lamy Saint-Aubin 1e cru ‘Clos de la Chatenieres’ ‘07 (who blow my socks away, thanks for the tip in episode 410)

QOTD: Saturday I had a couple of Hendricks Gin martinis with slices of cucumber. Delicious.

  200. June 30, 2009

    Glen

    Hey Gary,
Nice show! The (wine)nerds wil rise again!!
QOTD: We did a vertical tasting of Beyerskloof this weekend.
About Santenay: I visited Burgundy ten times, tasted lots of wines and only 15/20 where any good just like you proved in your show…
Thats the toll of having a big name i guess…

  201. June 30, 2009

    Anders

Nice episode. Goes to show that price is not always right :) Like your approach towards wine as an individual experience. Started watching a month ago and are now browsing through the archive every night.

QOTD: Drank a red Bordeaux 2007 Chateau Haux. It’s a small estate runned by a danish corp and I have some stocks and are therefore get to buy each vintage (red and white)at a reasonable price.
The wine sniffed :) green grass, a little bit of licorice, oak and ceder wood. The wine wirled :) red berries, dark chocolate, hay and some white pepper. Lot’s of tannins, should probably mature 2-3 years

Dude…1st time commenter and really enjoy the show!! just looked at the last comment and put 2 and 2 together…sorry but this is my nerdiness. take a looksy and see how (wine)nerd, if pronounced in the same vein as the germans would…sounds like vineyard. (wine)nerd=vineyard..haha, what do you think??

  204. June 30, 2009

    Jose Martinez

    Cool show.

QOTD: I had a couple 1800 Margaritas. Shot of 1800 Tequila, little triple sec, a little peach schnapps(my secret addition), some sour mix, a little sweetened fresh lime juice. Shack, salt, enjoyed.

  206. June 30, 2009

    MaRc

Awesome…love the nerdy aspects of the show!
    Keep the nerdy-ness rocking!

QOTD: had a 1998 Morton Estate Black Label Merlot Cabernet (from Hawkes Bay)…awesome!
my nerdy notes- cherry, blackcurrant, berries plus a good mix of leather and slight barnyard characters on the nose while on the palate, great intense cherry juice with red berry fruits together with some blackcurrant and plums before a the barnyard like midpalate and a long leathery finish with hints of dark chocolate. Med-full bodied, great acid structure and transition with great balance. Overall, excellent!

  207. June 30, 2009

    Todd

    Hi Gary,
Thanks for another informative episode. This weekend I had a Pimm’s cup and an ‘05 La Butte from Ch. La Gatte.
    Cheers to you.

  208. June 30, 2009

    Jamie Barger

Excellent episode, loved the nerd factor/wine talk/edumucation.

QOTD: It was a hot and humid weekend, needed to cool off with a “bourbon slush”; the new twist I discovered was to muddle it with fresh basil. I’ve decided that for cocktails, basil is the new mint.

  209. June 30, 2009

    Robert-Jon

WHAT!! A week at the grill would be awe-some!
I couldn’t follow some of the nerdiness but that’s ok, I bet many people were educated.

QOTD: Hertog Jan beer, which is, if I’m right, from southern Holland. Could be Belgium. It’s a regular pilsener but kinda leans toward the dark special beers.

Also, I always dig the wine nerd shows, and I have had some Santenay, so it’s nice to see that as well.

To @wendywhy: If there’s one thing GV is teaching here, it is that wine is fun, not intimidating! Get in there and take a swing (or swig)! It’s your palate. Use it!

Gary. Great show. Keep nerding it up. Though I may not seek out these wines this week, it gives perspective and a sense of geography to the wines I might drink. Thx. QOTD: Cotes Du Rhone cuvee speciale Rouge 2006 Les Vins De Vienne by Cuilleron, Villard, Gaillard and Villa. Branded by a Tokyo import store called Kinokuniya. Quite good for the equivalent of US$20.

    1. I had a 2006 1000 foot Pinot, that was alright, a little one note, and for Cali Pinot for <$20… ok
    2. 2004 Cakebread Merlot, I liked it, my wife loved it. very oaky but nice focused fruit, very floral, nice finish
    3. Some Trader Joes Toscana, $3.99 or something. It was absolutely terrible, totally disjointed and off balance. Really acidic, but not in a good way.

Yes, nerd it up! This was starting to turn into the Gary V Variety Show, and it’s awesome that you’re going to bring it back to its roots again. The nerdy, gritty secrets about the wine world are why I fell in love with this show in the beginning, and why I’ve continued to watch it all these years.

  218. June 30, 2009

QOTD: Sangria which I made from scratch. Turned out to be a really good batch, using some inexpensive Cali merlot as the base and Kirsch instead of regular brandy.

What did I drink last week? Chocolate milk. (I’ll pause here a moment while you laugh). If you ever decided to review wines with chocolate flavors, or wines that go well with chocolate, I’d definitely watch. My apologies if you’ve already done a show like this.

Hey Gary, I’ve been watching, but have been very remiss in leaving comments as of late–my bad–anyway, I do enjoy these formats very much, so keep the Nerdy formats as often as possible!

QOTD–this past weekend was all about beer!

I also had the Organic Nigori Junmai Ginjo last night and it was pretty good. Fruity and full of sediment/lees. Shake well is says on the label. Not bad for an Oregon play. Had to have Sushi with it though. Pretty tipsy after 375 ml bottle.
Then tried the Berkeley Gingo in the cute little blueish bottle. Smelled like bad honey dew mellon and tasted very bad at room temp. Just tried it again for breakfast, cold this time and it’s not too bad.

  226. June 30, 2009

    Laura Fritz

QOTD: I cooked an Italian pasta dish for my mom and had a 2006 Columbia Crest Two Vines Vineyard 10 White Wine. Wasn’t too impressed with the wine, but the pasta was spectacular!

    Andy

Gary- You are the ultimate NERD and i mean that with all the sincerity I can muster. I have been watching since episode 425 or so. You have inspired me to even give the whites some attention after years of neglect. Have you ever considered a show exclusively on the offerings at Trader Joe’s. To say that their pricing and selections are a bit mystifying is the understatement of the century. If you have already done one…”MOTT!!!! Link it up.”

…and Gayy, Sasha at least once a week. I love watching him steal the show from you

  228. June 30, 2009

    DF

Gary, really enjoyed the show today. You uncorked the “Vintage” Gary again and passed it around. Nice.

On a different note– have you ever considered just taking a few lessons on pronunciation of French? It is so much a part of your job, and it’s not necessary to mispronounce as you do. You don’t have to take a course on French to be able to read French wine labels aloud, just get someone to meet you in your house and do 3 1-hour sessions. You’d be good to go. French is spelled weirdly, but it’s actually more consistent in spelling and pronunciation than English. Just a thought.

QOTD: Los Cardos Malbec which I brought out to counteract the Undone Pinot Noir which someone else had brought. Undone was too light for me and Los Cardos was jammy juicy and delicious.

  229. June 30, 2009

    Jonathan

Enjoyed the show..as always. Good insight on the region. Francois is not pronounced Franko, but Fran-so-a.

I like nerdy shows – thanks

QOTD – shared a bottle of Vineland Estates Niagra (Canadian) Cabernet Franc.
It was amazing to watch it evolve from a fruity zippy simple wine into a complex but vegetable juice blend over about an hour. Very well balanced. Not everyone’s cup of tea. Went well with a whole host of foods though.

How long had these wines been open? I’ve found that super pooper pinots will often develop fruit notes after decanting for an hour or so. I’ve come to realize that I’m a nerd to the core when it comes to vino, and I love the super-geek shows. I’ve been working at an upscale restaurant in downtown Seattle for about a year now, which is also about how long I’ve been watching your show. At 23 I have completely surpassed everyone I work with in terms of textbook knowledge of wine (career service industry folk who love their drink), thanks in large part to your show. While I have only a fraction of the first hand drinking experience of those 10-20 years older than me, I find that I have to hold myself back when talking to my co-workers about wine these days in order to avoid clowning on my superiors… thank you good sir…

Love nerding it up – always happy when I need to take out my wine atlas. Wish I could watch Sir Gary, he’s been gone for a LONG time…

QOTD – Had a glass or two of the Chateau Greysac 2003 from the Medoc. Have probably had 4-5 bottle of this wine and think it is certainly a good wine for $14 bucks. Great balance, nice fruit, but also plenty of earth and veggies.

Good show. I like it when you taste different wines from the same grape. It shows how important the winemakers passion is.

    Qotd: We had two wines.

    2. Zar Simeon “Bin 40″ Cab from Nova Zagora Bulgaria

Thanks again for a new challenge of finding Santenay at the local SAQ. Veronique, from the Jura, hooked me up with a Savagnin 2005. Even with the appropriate pairing of Comte cheese I found it odd. What can I expect from the 1999 Vin Jaune waiting to thrill the palate made from the same grape?

I’ll leave a comment for the nerdiness. Love the esoteric episodes. Keep them coming! QOTD: I picked up a bottle of the Heidi Schrock Vogelsang at Wl this weekend and LOVED IT! It is a fix of Pinot Blanc, Furmint, and 2 other even lesser known varietals. I actually bought 3 more bottles and I NEVER buy more than 2 bottles of anything. You should give it a try on the show

  245. June 30, 2009

    Karl Laczko

Had a beautiful Santenay last year, Les Chantalbins 1999, a gift from a colleague in France, and it was delicious (89-90pts) with a strong liquorice nose.

QOTD – Had an OK St. Emilion Grand Cru. at my parents, but forgot to note down the name. Opened up a Turkish 2005 Bo?azkere (Red) from Doluca on Sunday evening, light but enjoyably fruity.

Qotd: Well, I had a lot to drink this weekend, lol. The one that I put the most thought into though was a Jack Daniels old fashioned, without the fruit because I’m a poor college student and don’t eat fruit enough to make it worthwhile. Other than that I had the usual, shinerbock last night, blue moon on saturday. had some wines on Friday at a wedding reception. Only good one wes La terre pinot grigio (forgive me on the spelling).

I watched this today Tuesday the 30th.. And I just got pack from a Martini Tasting. It featured two Vodkas make by the same company. Opulent and Prairie. The Prairie is “Organic” and both are gluten free. They really dinn’t make Matrinis per say. a Tonic Martini , a Cosmo and a Lemondrop Martini. The Voday was Smoothe. I believe The Opulent was filtered five times? Anyhow nice to mix it up. I am a wine guy always, but it was a good time. I will probably open up some 06′ Domaine Bernard Moreau Bourgogne in the next couple of days. Some White Burgundy is always nice and I like this particular producer and vintage.

Gary, thank you for putting my comment on the show…for clification’s sake, my first episode was the Amon-Ra decanting episode…really liied the show today, educational and fun…I also really liked the Shafer episode yesterday..definitally go with the grill theme I did little neck clams last week on the grill, delicious with a chard…this weekend was my b-day, Damilano Barolo 2004. QOTD: This weekend, I enjoyed the 2005 Elias Mora Crianza. For the price, this wine is a serious kick in the face. Need to order more…Love it. QOTD: Sunday was Jean Marc Lafage Cote Est (Catalan VDP Chard, marsanne, & grenache) that had white quartz minerality I loved and had with frog legs (first time since I was a kid!)… Saturday was Fixin 1er Cru Clos Napoleon Dom. Pierre Gelin and enjoyed it (horrible pairing with salmon salad “nicoise”… the burnt flavors of the wine made it feel like someone burnt the fish when they cooked it, but fun nonetheless).

First time poster, not too long time a lurker – great episode. Love the nerd stuff. I am still relatively new to working in a fancy upscale wine store in the northeast, and I love it. We carry several bottles of Santenay, red and white. I can’t afford to taste a lot of these fine wines. Plus, we don’t always get to taste. The wine world, especially old-world, is overwhelming to us newcomers. This was an enlightening episode – even within this small sub-region we see amazing variety in style and quality. More of these types of episodes would be awesome, even if I’m not learning about the specific bottles of wine with which I interact. Keep going.

qotd: la manarine cdr ‘06 (first day good, second day opened up very nicely, wish I could have let breathe more or possibly decant on first day, even for such a not-so-fancy bottle), dogfishhead 90, cuilleron syrah rose ‘08, dogfishhead ‘the squall’(interesting, good, but all over the place, maybe lacks focus)

Love the nerd shows! Places like Napa Valley, Australia and Bordeaux (although I love Bordeaux and it has lots of sub regions that are pretty unknown/nerdy like Fronsac, Barsac and most the dry whites) don’t really need any more attention. You should do a show on the “other” Nebbiolo wines of Peidmont like Gattinara and Ghemme. That would be SUPER nerdy.

QOTD: A Dr. Loosen Riesling Beerenauslese in a quarter bottle. Shouldn’t have drank it for another 20 years. But we had been drinking PBR all afternoon and it seemed like a good idea. Oops.

The regional exploration is one of the many things that makes this program so valuable to the experienced and novice alike. 2000 Les Pagodes de Cos was great 91 pts. Great 2nd wine in a Great vintage. “This is a very good little wine. Very earthy (poopy) nose that quickly blew off. Blackberrys and dark fruits focused on a well balanced frame. Tannins are very nice. Some spice and deeper earthy flavors make this a very enjoyable wine. Seems heavy on the Merlot??? Drink now and for 3-5 years…AMM”

Nice and nerdy Gary! Enjoyed the show!! I like hearing about things you wouldn’t really see in most of the wine stores in my area.

My wife and I went to Asheville NC for our 11 year anniversary. I had a nice wine at Steak and Wine restaurant. It was Chateau Greysac 2004 Medoc. It was pretty good, but was digging the nose more on my wife’s 2007 Brancott. My wife even pulled a Gary on me and told me my wine smelled like band aids and dark cherries!! She’s awesome. The Greysac held up well with my prime rib! YUM!!

Have never tried a Santenay so I appreciated this show. Checked my local PA. Premium Collection Wine store and they did not have a single bottle of any Santenay in stock. If I drive half an hour to the next closest state store they have only a 2006 LOUIS LATOUR SANTENAY BLANC available for $22 bones.

QOTD: Sunday had a carafe of generic Lambrusco with dinner at a local Italian restaurant. Saturday I opened a 2007 Cab/Shiraz/Merlot blend called The Left Bank produced by Neil Ellis Wines from the Western Cape region of South Africa. Gary,
good episode. being a beginning wine nerd myself, i’m always down for nerding it up.

One thing i had to mention: I’m a relatively new assistant wine maker, and recently we had a french wine maker come to visit our place. Among other things, he mentioned that “in france, we never filter our Pinot Noir” and seemed astonished that we were even considering filtering our reserve pinot. I mention this because you commented that 2006 Saint Francois Santenay Rouge was very cloudy, but that cloudiness was probably caused by how you poured the wine (much like the way they drink mountain dew in those commercials). Please don’t get me wrong, I love your enthusiasm and intensity, but with unfiltered wine it really helps to let them sit upright for a couple days prior to drinking and then to pour gently so as to not disturb the cloudy crap at the bottom.

Love the thunder show; keep it up. How about a show on Finger Lakes Reds? I work for a place that specializes in big, bold, tannic reds and I feel like most of the country still thinks that all the finger lakes can produce is good riesling. (and there are other good places besides Herman wiemer and Dr. Frank)

    thanks

Alas, as I was working the whole weekend (as is my habit) I did not have an alcoholic beverage. But Monday morning, I get off at 0700, I opened a Nobilio 2007 Regional Sauvignon Blanc.

During the weekend water and diet 7 Up mostly. Pretty blah.

Nice show, although the wines were obviously dissappointing. Let’s see, last weekend… ah yes, with some filet mignon topped with Gorgonzola crumbles, we had a 1999 Judd’s Hill Cabernet which was beautiful with the steak.

Gary, thank you for featuring these wines. Santenay has that simple, old world style, surrounded by the bad boys of cote de beaune, the montrachets. There is not much, or anything in the town of Santenay, though they recently redid their streets and town square. There is a wonderful wine store there and a couple of restaurants. Nearby, Meursault provides some excellent reds and whites, though a bit more expensive. Auxey-Duresses white is a great value alternative to the santenays, lots of minerality.

QOTD – St. Emilion Chateau Haut Veyrac 2001, great food wine, not overpowering

I have had wine and beer this weekend. Last night I had a glass of a Spanish wine (can’t remember name) and a California Zin called EOS with dinner at my favorite restaurant. I also had a beer at home called Ommegang Abbey, which is made in Cooperstown NY, and is a Belgian Dubbel style. All were very nice.

It is the middle of the summer, we live in Columbia, SC, so spend as much time at the pool as possible = white wine. Yesterday, a Next Riesling from Washington which was completely refreshing. On mens night out Zin was the thing, Seghesio Sonoma 2006, the new Orin Swift release, and the Ravenswood Big River. With the 90 degree plus days, and 70 degree plus evenings, the thin skin grapes just seem more appealing

This past weekend, fourth of July, hanging out with the family, I had some home-brewed beer my brother and law made. It was pretty summery with a little bit of sweetness to it that had hints of apple cider. Lots of fun.

Great ep G ….. Will be on the lookout for a Santenay.
QOTD—— This past weekend had a great craft beer from Asheville NC Highland St Therese Pale ale. Also enjoyed a Torrentes and a Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand (Dogpoint) 2008. Also had a Mondavi Merlot 2006.

Great show – I’ve actually been to Santenay, so I have had a lot of wines from there. It is definitely somewhere that I look out for when I want a Burgundy that is a reasonable price.

QOTD – Goats du Roam white wine from SA, a Bourgogne blanc, a Southern-French viognier, a couple of different British ales, a very ordinary Prosecco and way too many cocktails.

    Gary,
Was introduced the the Italian red variety Casetta (Foja Tonda), by Albino Armani (2005, $18), Vallagarina I. G. T. I was very impressed with its finesse, mouthfeel, and overall enjoyment factor. Meaty with great red/black fruit. Beautifully floral nose. Looking forward to future episodes that focus on the more obscure Italian varieties. Exciting stuff.

Good show, never had a Santanay before, but based upon the non-stellar showing here today, I might not want to! :o )
QOTD: beverage this weekend? Lot’s different ~ Rosenblum 06 Cuvee Syrah, Crandall Brooks 05 Napa Meritage, Snapdragon 07 Chardonnay, Coppola Alicante Bouschet, Opera Prima Tempranillo, Opera Prima Shiraz, Walden Cotes`du Rousillon Rouge, Gazela Vihno Verde – All very drinkable! Favorites? The Walden, Snapdragon, and the Meritage – Yummy!

QOD It was our 32nd anniversary today and we had lobster from the fish market and Allam Scott Sauvigon Blanc 2008 from Marlborough, New Zealand. It was very delicious!

05 Santenay Les Charmes, Vincent Girardin; luscious cherry with a new-world yet balanced approach, not too hard to locate…a good cherry Santenay to pop your Santenay cherry.

QOTD: Magic Hat variety pack, Bell’s Oberon, 2008 Pic St Loup Chateau de Lancyre (Languedoc Rose)

This week I drank an Imperial Stout from up your neck of the woods (being the US). A label we just got in to work, the Rogue’s XS RIS. Honestly not my cup-o-tea.
Considering the raps it had received I would say this was a very disappointing bevvy. Unbalanced and overtly bitter with an overwhelming Vegemite and yeasty extract character which was utterly unappealing. For the cash this is a beer that should rock my socks off, instead it just sent me to the fridge to grab a palate cleanser.
Rogue’s other beers have been over all fairly good to great, but this was a shocker.

I liked the look at Santenay Mr V. An overlooked little slice of Burgs that can produce some excellent drinking wines.
Cheers from the land down under.

GV – interesting show. I love Burgundy! I particularly like the stinky wines and stinky cheeses.

QOTD – I am weeks late in watching and commenting and I do not remember what I drank a few weeks back. But this weekend I drank some 90+ cellars wines, which are actually pretty good – Malbec, Cabernet, Shiraz/Viognier, Chardonnay, Sauv Blanc. (I didn’t drink bottles of all of those, I tasted them all).

You really need lessons in French pronounciation, haha, but what you know about wine would fill this galaxy, so I shouldn’t carp and quibble.

It’s FRANSWA (Francois) and VYAY (Vieilles). Call me. Anytime. Spell the French word, or even the Italian one, and I’ll tell you how to pronounce it.
