You really need lessons in French pronounciation, haha, but what you know about wine would fill this galaxy, so I shouldn’t carp and quibble.

It’s FRANSWA (Francois) and VYAY (Vieilles). Call me. Anytime. Spell the French word, or even the Italian one, and I’ll tell you how to pronounce it.

GV – interesting show. I love Burgundy! I particularly like the stinky wines and stinky cheeses.

QOTD – I am weeks late in watching and commenting and I do not remember what I drank a few weeks back. But this weekend I drank some 90+ cellars wines, which are actually pretty good – Malbec, Cabernet, Shiraz/Viognier, Chardonnay, Sauv Blanc. (I didn’t drink bottles of all of those, I tasted them all).

This week I drank an Imperial Stout from up your neck of the woods (being the US). A label we just got in to work, the Rogue’s XS RIS. Honestly not my cup-o-tea.
Considering the raps it had received I would say this was a very disappointing bevvy. Unbalanced and overtly bitter with an overwhelming Vegemite and yeasty extract character which was utterly unappealing. For the cash this is a beer that should rock my socks off, instead it just sent me to the fridge to grab a palate cleanser.
Rogue’s other beers have been over all fairly good to great, but this was a shocker.

I liked the look at Santenay Mr V. An overlooked little slice of Burgs that can produce some excellent drinking wines.
Cheers from the land down under.

05 Santenay Les Charmes, Vincent Girardin; luscious cherry with a new-world yet balanced approach, not too hard to locate…a good cherry Santenay to pop your Santenay cherry.

QOTD: Magic Hat variety pack, Bell’s Oberon, 2008 Pic St Loup Chateau de Lancyre (Languedoc Rose)

Good show, never had a Santanay before, but based upon the non-stellar showing here today, I might not want to! :o )
QOTD: beverage this weekend? Lot’s different ~ Rosenblum 06 Cuvee Syrah, Crandall Brooks 05 Napa Meritage, Snapdragon 07 Chardonnay, Coppola Alicante Bouschet, Opera Prima Tempranillo, Opera Prima Shiraz, Walden Cotes`du Rousillon Rouge, Gazela Vihno Verde – All very drinkable! Gary,
Was introduced the the Italian red variety Casetta (Foja Tonda), by Albino Armani (2005, $18), Vallagarina I. G. T. I was very impressed with its finesse, mouthfeel, and overall enjoyment factor. Meaty with great red/black fruit. Beautifully floral nose. Looking forward to future episodes that focus on the more obscure Italian varieties. Exciting stuff.

Great show – I’ve actually been to Santenay, so I have had a lot of wines from there. It is definitely somewhere that I look out for when I want a Burgundy that is a reasonable price.

QOTD – Goats du Roam white wine from SA, a Bourgogne blanc, a Southern-French viognier, a couple of different British ales, a very ordinary Prosecco and way too many cocktails.

QOTD—— This past weekend had a great craft beer from Asheville NC Highland St Therese Pale ale. Also enjoyed a Torrentes and a Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand (Dogpoint) 2008. Also had a Mondavi Merlot 2006.

This past weekend, fourth of July, hanging out with the family, I had some home-brewed beer my brother and law made. It was pretty summery with a little bit of sweetness to it that had hints of apple cider. Lots of fun.

Gary, great show, love the nerdism!

I shared an ‘06 Beckmen Estate Grenache with some friends, it was delicious.

It is the middle of the summer, we live in Columbia, SC, so spend as much time at the pool as possible = white wine. Yesterday, a Next Riesling from Washington which was completely refreshing. On mens night out Zin was the thing, Seghesio Sonoma 2006, the new Orin Swift release, and the Ravenswood Big River. With the 90 degree plus days, and 70 degree plus evenings, the thin skin grapes just seem more appealing

I have had wine and beer this weekend. Last night I had a glass of a Spanish wine (can’t remember name) and a California Zin called EOS with dinner at my favorite restaurant. I also had a beer at home called Ommegang Abbey, which is made in Cooperstown NY, and is a Belgian Dubbel style. All were very nice.

Gary, thank you for featuring these wines. Santenay has that simple, old world style, surrounded by the bad boys of cote de beaune, the montrachets. There is not much, or anything in the town of Santenay, though they recently redid their streets and town square. There is a wonderful wine store there and a couple of restaurants. Nearby, Meursault provides some excellent reds and whites, though a bit more expensive. Auxey-Duresses white is a great value alternative to the santenays, lots of minerality.

QOTD – St. Emilion Chateau Haut Veyrac 2001, great food wine, not overpowering

Nice show, although the wines were obviously dissappointing. Let’s see, last weekend… ah yes, with some filet mignon topped with Gorgonzola crumbles, we had a 1999 Judd’s Hill Cabernet which was beautiful with the steak.

Alas, as I was working the whole weekend (as is my habit) I did not have an alcoholic beverage. But Monday morning, I get off at 0700, I opened a Nobilio 2007 Regional Sauvignon Blanc.

During the weekend water and diet 7 Up mostly. Pretty blah.

    Gary,
good episode. being a beginning wine nerd myself, i’m always down for nerding it up.

One thing i had to mention: I’m a relatively new assistant wine maker, and recently we had a french wine maker come to visit our place. Among other things, he mentioned that “in france, we never filter our Pinot Noir” and seemed astonished that we were even considering filtering our reserve pinot. I mention this because you commented that 2006 Saint Francois Santenay Rouge was very cloudy, but that cloudiness was probably caused by how you poured the wine (much like the way they drink mountain dew in those commercials). Please don’t get me wrong, I love your enthusiasm and intensity, but with unfiltered wine it really helps to let them sit upright for a couple days prior to drinking and then to pour gently so as to not disturb the cloudy crap at the bottom.

Love the thunder show; keep it up. How about a show on Finger Lakes Reds? I work for a place that specializes in big, bold, tannic reds and I feel like most of the country still thinks that all the finger lakes can produce is good riesling. (and there are other good places besides Herman wiemer and Dr. Frank)

    thanks

it wasnt a fumble, that could have been the statue of liberty play, mott forgot to run behind. I am a wine nerd and I like the nerdy shows.

QOTD: I had Nero D’Avola. You mentioned Magic Hat #9….maybe I’ll have some this weekend.

I don’t mind the earthy sheep butt in my Burgundy. But my palate can’t find a Chinon that I like.

QOTD: It was my birthday, so I had many different wines with a bunch of friends: Hans Lang Riesling “Johann Maximilian” (Germany), Condado de Oriza Crianza (Spain), Allesverloren Tinta Barroca (South Africa), Castagnoli Chianti Classico. Everyone was great in it’s own way!
