Clo seems like a really hip place!

    Amazing what technology can provide!

QOTD: No cool wine bars up here in Sherbrooke, Québec, Canada. I’ve never been to Clo’s, but definately an amazing concept! Kudos!

    Cheers!

    Interesting report.

QOTD: Living in a small city i Sweden (80 000 inhab)I’ll don’t get the privelage to have a wine bar. Lots of pubs and resturants, but no wine bar … I’ve to open one… hmm..

Very Cool Wine Bar. Love the Concept.

QOTD: Ibiza on the South Side of Pittsburgh.

Love the use of technology there, very cool to see people push the envelope.

QOTD: WHoa, you didn’t let the guest ask the question? That has to be a first. My favorite one is a place called “Crust” and it’s a wine-bar combined with a gourmet pizza (thin-crust NY style) restaruant in Bloomfield, MI.

    hey gary -

favorite wine bar of the moment has to be Vinoteca on the U Street Corridor in DC. Nice selection of “weird” wines and the price isn’t too terrible. I’m on my way up to NYC right now, and will be checking out Terroir tonight – hoping that Paul Greico kicks my palate in.

Qotd: Vino Local in Palo Alto, Ca. As the name says it’s all local wines and nice outside area with pretty good munchies.
Thanks for showing us CLO. It looks very high tech but where are the couches or chairs? Couldn’t they let you taste a couple more wines? Expense it!
I went to a place in SF that had a similar approach where they have machines give you tastes, instead of glasses, and it was pretty pricey. That’s how they roll.
@GV Thanks a bunch for the list of free shipping wines for the weekend. I’m stocking up on some QPR’s.

Really neat concept for that wine bar!!! I had a cubcile full of people checking that out with me.

My favorite wine bar, would be Sante wine bar in Asheville NC. But I havent really tried the ones here in my home town. I hear that Rumours wine bar is great.

Just seeing how LITTLE the amount of wine came out for the dollar tells me not to waste my time going there. Thanks Gary for showing this vid. I would have felt raped had I not seen it now. I understand the location costs, but give a guy a break…. you mean to tell me this place can’t pour in a “little” more???? PASS

  34. July 2, 2009

    Chris F.

    Very cool place!!!

QOTD:My favorite wine bar is in Vancouver Washington of all place. The Cinetopia theater, fine dining restaurant and 100 bottle automated wine bar. This theater has the best HD projectors in the Portland, Vancouver area, fine dining service inside a special living room theater, equipped with overstuffed leather chairs and ottomans. But the coolest thing is the wine bar,it is similar to The Clo bar in that you use a card to dispense your wine from an automated enclosed system. The difference is that they sell their wine by the glass, ounce or bottle(they hand serve these). This place is great, you can jump around tasting until you find what you want without buying a whole glass and then plant your ass in a big overstuffed chair, eat a killer dinner and watch a great movie on a super high def screen what could be better than that!

Baron Bouge in the 12th arr in Paris, France
They are a winebar where you can actually buy a glass of wine for 2 bucks.
They don’t serve the high end stuff, but its handmade wine and decent.
they also have great oysters and slalami

I gotta say that place is a little gimmicky and is for tourists. I think theese kinds of high concept places wear thin quickly and the technology starts to look tatty quickly.
I did see some good wines though

Cool episode but I agree it seems like they don’t give you enough for what your paying.

QOTD: Morrell Wine Bar in Rockefeller Plaza

  42. July 2, 2009

    Dominus

How coooool! You even nerded it up high-tech style. The next time I’m in NY I’ll be sure to check out the Star Wars video winebar.

Sorry to hear the wine did not live up to the Vayniac’s recommendation. I didn’t see any Dominus?

Anyway, sitting out on the deck with a group of homies drinking the Villa Santa from a recent Portugal episode.

Why does Clo offer such huge pours? Can you request just a taste?

The place reminds me of a pachinko parlor. Without servers, what is the point? Even Mickey D’s has servers. And clearly, they don’t pass the savings in labor costs to the consumer!

Superb review of the Binder, GV.

QOTD: Soif, here in Santa Cruz, California.

G, you should’ve compared your notes to those at/in that cool table.

QOTD: In Fine Spirits in Chi. It’s a local joint w/a friendly staff and nice little selection that doesn’t break the bank. Plus, they have a store directly next to them of the same name that you can usually pick up a botlle of what you like from the bar. Also, LeCreperie in Chi. Maybe more of a restaurant, but their French is as solid as most wine bars and the food is pretty darn good. The ambience there would have you thinking you are in an old bistro in Paris.

QOTD: 750ML in San Mateo has a similar set-up, but gives 1 oz pours so you can taste more wines than lock in one glass of opus @ 50.00.

VERY VERY cool, Gary! Thanks for sharing that place with us. I definitely want to check that place out next time I’m down in the city!

  51. July 2, 2009

Winery Collective in San Francisco is the favorite de jour. 15-20 boutique California wineries poured at one shop in the city

  52. July 2, 2009

    Banknote

They tried that sort of thing in Napa, but it didn’t last. Could have been the location though, not the concept that was to blame.

That table was great! I think its brilliant, gives people something to play with while they’re drinking.

QOTD: Willis Wine Bar in Santa Rosa, CA. Feels like an old Bordelo (not that I would know)

  53. July 2, 2009

    Ben N.

Vary vary cool wine bar. Would like see one in LA. I don’t have a favorite wine bar, maybe my own house is the best I can think of right now.

Very good show. Might have to pop into CLO one of these nights. Hope they appreciate the exposure GV gave them.

    Sarah Fowler

My favorite wine bar is The Winery at the Red Bar in Tallahassee, FL. It’s a great atmosphere, and you see *everyone* there for live jazz on Friday nights! Used to be super affordable ($5/glass house wines, which are excellent), but the price point has gone up a little. Still a really enjoyable place. I live in Orlando now and miss it!

  57. July 2, 2009

    Laurie in VT

I started watching just after this went up, and finally after several phone calls, supper, and another phone call I get to finish! Jeez!
Very cool place, great concept! I wonder what the noise level is like once it’s open, considering the extraneous noise and echo during the taping.
QOTD: None available to have a favorite :( , not within easy travel distance, at any rate.

  58. July 2, 2009

    Bill H

Clo sounds pretty cool, I’ll have to check it out next time I’m in the city. While not a wine bar per se, my favorite place to drink wine at the moment is Sel de la Terre in Boston, they have a great, mostly old-world list with a good amount of wines by the glass and it changes pretty frequently, always one or two outside the box styles, I was drinking this great Vinsobres for awhile, and right now I think they have 4 different dry roses by the glass. Also, I was at this place in Chicago called Eno (I think they have a few other locations) that’s all about wine, cheese, and chocolate, and they have a bunch of different flights of all 3, which I think is a pretty cool concept.

  59. July 2, 2009

    paryb

That was a really cool looking place!

QOTD: Unfortunately there aren’t any wine bars in my neck of the woods. Really cool one up in Santa Fe, NM though on the plaza called La Casa Sena, coupled with a pretty outstanding wine shop, it’s a kickass place to be.

  60. July 2, 2009

    Pat B

    Gary,

Nice episode. Clo seems like a neat concept and definetly has a wide selection by the glass, but I can’t ever see myself going there. The room seemed kind of austere and I couldn’t help but think it looked more like a labratory than a wine bar. I don’t want to knock the place, everyone seemed friendly and the location is great, but I prefer a more personal experience where you can sit down, have a conversation and listen to music. That’s just my taste, but props to Clo for mixing it up and trying something new.

  61. July 2, 2009

great show. love the wine bar themes. when you’re on the road, try to do a show at a wine bar…. gotta love the virtual wine menu.

  62. July 2, 2009

That was excellent! I saw that bottle of Pride… That’s what I’d want.

QotD – Grovewood Wine Bar, North Collinwood,Cleveland. http://www.rovewoodtavern.com.

    Andrew D

    Hey Gary

    Thanks for the show.

QOTD: Not too sure about my favourite wine bar. To be honest the choices in HK are pretty poor – either very average quaility wines or way overpriced. If I had to pick though I’d say the tasting room at Watson’s wine cellar that is a pretty cool concept.

    Cheers
    Andrew

GV, An absolutely killer show. I love it when you bring a new twist for the viewers, well done. I go to a wine bar in Saratoga, NY called The Wine Bar, ha ha, no really that is what it is called. BTW I hope we can roll with a get together at the track this summer. Great show.

Hi Gary, Clo wine bar looks good, but what´s about the noise there?? I cant enjoy wine tasting in such noisy place. QOTD: Bokovka (Sideway) wine bar in Prague.

    GARY!!!
I am without a doubt going to checkout CLO.

QOTD: Theres a bunch.. The 8th Street Wine Cellar ..just a cool, relaxed place where I meet friends.. The Bubble Lounge..cuz I have a lot of memories there, Bin 71, Vino <-have taken classes here…love the place.

OH..I could go on and on..I just love the city..and wine bars.. Sounds corny, but I used to love to visit the Rainbow Room and sit at the bar, with that incredible view of the city and drink a glass of Champagne.

    Hey Gary,
Cool Wine bar. We like the concept.
In Pittsburgh we have several wine bars, but we would say our favorite is in the Southside of Pittsburgh called Ibiza. We would love for you to come to PA and we will treat you to a visit at Ibiza! Go STEELERS and PENGUINS!!

  72. July 2, 2009

    Gibb Brown

QOTD, gotta be honest, as a relative newcomer to the wine world, i find wine bars a bit condescending. after a few too many bad experiences with waiters looking at me like something they scraped off their shoe, I’ve stopped going.

I LOVE technology!! That table is completely AWESOME! Great road show

QOTD~ Here in Las Vegas they have very cool wine bar at Green Valley Ranch that resembles very close to the one in your show today. Pay by the ounce type deal with Technology infused.

  75. July 2, 2009

    Ian L

Sweet looking place with a great concept and use of technology. Curiously enough, how are the wines dispensed? Straight from the bottle in the display or is there a big pot at the back. And are the wines fresh from the bottle or have been breathing for a while?

QOTD: In Singapore, Wine Company does a pretty good job with ambience and selection with about 50% from South Africa. Wine Connection is pretty good too ‘cos they extend into the lower price range which is good for a CKC like me.

  76. July 2, 2009

    Eli

I’ve been to Clo, and it is a total rip-off!! You said that the prices looked reasonable, and I thought the same thing when I first went there. $19 a glass seems ok for a full glass. But they only give you a puny 4 ounce pour. That is only 2/3 of a glass!! (A normal glass of wine is 6 ounces). Clo is made for tourists who buy one glass, get shocked by the price, run out of there, and never go back. This place is not made for repeat business. It is made for suckers who stumble upon this place while shopping on vacation.

QOTD: I went to Bar Boulud yesterday, and it was fantastic. That is my new favorite wine bar.

  77. July 2, 2009

    Kevin

Whoah. That place is gimmicked out!
QOTD: Hm. At home, Bibo. Tiny little place. Best we have. However, I’m going to give the highest praise to a frumpy little place in Auxey Duresses that sells wines by the glass from local producers. I had a grand cru burgundy by the glass that was well worth the few euros I paid for it.

qotd – too poor for wine bars.

  80. July 2, 2009

    Phredd

Really cool place. If I were a little richer, it would be a great place to go. I can’t afford to do much buying at restaurants, though. I usually have inferior wines at 100% markup. So….

QOTD: I’ve never been to a wine bar. Maybe someday, when I’m feeling flush or on my birthday or something.

  81. July 2, 2009

    My favorite Wine Bar: http://www.yelp.com/biz/cioccolata-di-vino-berkeley

    Two reasons:

    A) They price from $4 to $60, that allows all friends to come and try something and enjoy.

    B) It’s right near campus, and being sumer all the girls are in super shorts. Wine is about the experience, and I dig the experience here…

Super-Fab wine bar! I can hardly wait to go next time I’m in NYC! However, what were the kiddy-noises in the background? Maybe some employee’s kids hanging out before opening-time?…

QOTD: Recently went to Cru in north-Dallas (Plano); very nice, good food, too.

QOTD: CJ Wijns at Birch Bay Washington. I bet you have never heard of that one. BTY “Wijns” they tell me is Dutch for wine.

  92. July 3, 2009

    flavasauce

cool little show, bummer about the wine and at $19 I’d be pissed! This is why I almost never do wine bars or even wine at resaurants- the mark-ups piss me off! I’d much rather buy a bottle of something I like for 19 bones and cook for myself or get takeout.

    That being said…
Hotel Biron in SF is very cute.

  93. July 3, 2009

    my2cents

    Thanks that was really cool.

What a cool bar. I have seen similar projections in the mall with a game or something on the floor and kids jumping all over em.

It’d be really coll if there was more depth of info into the regions and histories of wines and vines.

The people there seemed very welcoming and into expanding people’s experience with wine.

Kind of strange to me that they don’t have people pouring, obviously when more glasses equals more $ they would benefit from the precise pours from a machine. I have not been in a wine bar with machines (yet) I guess I am behind the times.

I am also behind on a few shows from the last week or so. So it’s time to try another.

GV, I liked the show. Seems like a cool place to go after a show in the city.

QOTD: City Cellar in Westbury, NY: The foods good and the wine is reasonable- They sell half price bottles on Mondays which brings the price down to about retail.

  96. July 3, 2009

    thiago a

never went to a wine bar, I prefer enjoying at home with my family or sometimes divide a bottle with some homies.. maybe next time in the U.S. I’ll drop by some…

we’re expecting another cheese show, the first one was amazing! but if your father comes to tape with you, better bring extra cheese (and I mean, EXTRA cheese!!) Love you both!

    big ups from BRZ!!

    Christopher Scoggin

Fun use of tech and the “kid in the candy store” credit card system is a great trick to encourage spending more then you meant to :)

As a person who as a general rule does not fall for the brand name trap, I agree with you 100% on the get the same experience at half the price issue you discussed. Not sure there is much they can do about it. They can either geek it up and please the niche but reduce sales or aim for the lowest common denominator (oak/fruit-bomb) and sell that much more. The age old business quandary, no?

QOTD: I don’t roll big enough to afford by the glass prices so no wine bars for me. $20 a bottle is my upper limit so 12 bones a glass makes my brain hurt :)

Hey Gary, I’d like that same sensation (fruit-bomb mmm) for say $15. Something fun, new world style. Every wine I have had (and it’s only been 3-4) have been not great to my palate. Usually too vegetal. Any recommendation would be great, because searching can be frustrating and expensive!

What a cool place, I’m going to have to go check it out soon. There is a nice wine bar in Garden City NY called Novitá that has a dispensing system behind the bar. But right now my favorite is Terroir NYC. No fruit bombs to be found there!

So here is your answer from Germany ;)

My fav. “wine bar” is the Bar No. 10 in Giessen. Unfortunatley their wine list is not that “different”, but the Gin, Whiskey … selection is great!

    Cheers,

Call me old fashioned, by I find that place a bit too gimmicky for me.

QOTD: I’ve actually only been to one wine bar before (There aren’t many in Victoria, BC. It’s more of a pub town) but it certainly was a lovely time. It’s called “After Dark,” and I mean to visit it again some time soon.

I will definitely visit this place the next time I an in NYC. (hopefully soon)

I am wondering though, did the owner get dissed that you kind of gave a not so rave review of a wine he has for retail? I probably wouldn’t, since there are more than 100 wines he said but still.

    QOTD:
My favorite place is actually not a wine bar since I don’t have a favorite winebar (if you don’t count my cellar), it’s the Hofbräuhaus in Munich, Germany. A wonderful place.

Thanks for the tip off Gary. I’ll have to visit CLO next time I’m in New York.

QOTD: My favourite wine bar is Terroirs in London which for me is even better than Terroirs in New York. Mostly French wines from small Bio Dynamic/Lutte Raisonneé/Organic producers. QOTD: Gary you alarmed me with that question. With that question you made me realize that I don’t know any good winebars around here. I’m sure there are some but I have never really looked. Could anybody give me some tips about good winebars in Berlin?

  112. July 3, 2009

    MarcoDatini

Hi Gary, I’m from Dortmund in Germany. We have two classic winebars in Dortmund but my favorite place is the so called wine-garden of my wine merchant “cabernet & co”. When the weather is nice he sells his wines by glas and you can drink them in his wine-garden (looks like a very small beergarden without beer). And by the way his favorite wine growing region is Portugal – and one of my favorites too. Good look for #700! Greetings from Dortmund, Peter

Cool location. I haven´t seen a winebar like this before. Some wines looks very expensive for one glas. The bar table was very interesting. You can get all your information about the wines you can buy.

QOTD: There is no winebar within an radius of 40 miles. But when I drive to my in-laws to Frankenthal (Pfalz), we visit evertime some vintner´s. It is always fun to sit there and try some wines.

I don’t really have a favorite wine bar – I’ve had two great experiences in San Diego at the Hotel del Coronado wine bar (not sure what it’s called) but I don’t remember it being anything special as far as wine bars go…it was all about the company. However, my LEAST FAVORITE wine bar is the Torres Wine Bar on Paseo de Gracia in Barcelona. I’m not a big fan of Torres wines in general but this place somehow manages to make them even less enjoyable!

#699……wonder how you’re gonna rock us up / nerd with us on epi #700. Cant wait!

Don’t really go to wine bars…prefer to open my own bottle at dinners or home, etc…
At wine bars, or whenever you order by the glass…you’ll never know how the wine has been kept or how long has it been open. Hence, it kinda spoils the true pleasure of enjoying the vin.
However, this is probably only a wine geeks perspective!

Gary – TREMENDOUS EPISODE!!! It was great to get a behind the scenes sneak peak action to this innovative wine bar. I might have to seek this one out next time I’m up on NYC. I think this type of episode is another great tool for your arsenal Gary. You’ve been mixing it up quite a bit recently, which I appreciate.

QOTD: For my 29th b-day, my girlfriend took me to Il Bar & Panorama Restaurant within the famous Penn’s View Hotel in Philly. They have the world’s largest preservation and dispensation system which allows them to have 120 open bottles at one time. The right side of this photo gives a glimpse. They also have a huge menu of flights and you can get 3 oz “tastes” or 5 oz glasses in addition to the bottles and their reserve list. Definitely a cool place and ironically I overheard someone talking about Gary Vaynerchuk when we sat down at our table!

Cool use of technology and design at CLO, although I have to assume that dictates the price of their vino. I saw a lot of pricey wines for just one glass as you were panning around. Either way, it was a cool spot…

GV- were you eating an otter pop before the show? I think your tongue was red, mine only turns purple from wine. Maybe you were drinking a Rose?

QOTD: I haven’t been to as many wine bars as I’d like, I often buy and drink here or hit the tasting rooms in Hood River or Dundee. But, I do like this little place over by my work called Rennaissance Wines (Hillsboro, OR) that does $5-$10 flights every Friday night at 5:00pm. It’s perfect after a long week at the office. It’s not the coolest place in the world, nor do they have the greatest selection, but the staff is cool and it’s convenient.

QOTD – I don’t have a favorite. I’ve been to many and I am almost always disappointed in the selection. I want something different, unique and tasty; however I usually don’t find the quality I am seeking. I also feel they are over priced for the quality I get.

That really did look like a cool wine bar. However, it sounded like they had way too much noise pollution coming in. I like my wine bar to be more relaxing and quieter, perhaps with some jazz or electronica. It also looked not all that cozy and comfortable to hang out there. But i did like all the high tech stuff. I think this appeals for the techy/geek factor. But i probably still wouldn’t hang out there.

Hey, just want to throw this out there even though i know it’s a long shot. i recently watched John Cleese in his documentary called Wine for the Confused. I think you and he have similar philosophies about wine. I think it would be so cool if you could convince him to come on your show. I bet he would if you could somehow get in touch with him. He apparently lives in or very near wine country CA according to his film.

QOTD: my favorite wine bar is a place called Purple in Seattle. I love their wine flights that they pair with tapas. Yummy and very reasonably priced. And super cool decor. thepurplecafe.com. Gary, you can’t rate a wine that has been sitting under gas. Pop and pour one and then judge. Under gas it can get a little flabby and certainly subdues the tannins. It hurts the wines balance. Yeah, I didn’t believe it until my wife (a pinot lover)was disappointed with a glass of Roessler pinot noir and the sommelier said “I keep telling them not to put that wine under gas”. He opened the same vintage, he said it came from the same case as the gassed bottle, and it was like a different wine, great nose, nice fresh acidity and a much longer finish than the gassed wine. Pinot’s are finiky so maybe they are more sensitive to that treatment and most can’t sit around under vacuum, gas or recorked and refrigerated very long and still be drinkable, but I would not rate any wine from a “wine dispenser”.

We have a wine bar at one of the local movie theaters. -about 24-32 bottles. I like that you can select two four or six ounces (full glass). So, if you just want to taste a more expensive wine, you do not have to pay an arm and a leg, if you love it, you just get more. Very nice system. My palate is not refined enough to say it affects the flavor or not.

  174. July 3, 2009

    BrianAF

Wow that place is really cool. The problem with places that have a high degree of novelty is that you are likely to pay for that novelty rather than the products that are contained therin. To me those prices for a glass (and this goes for most wine bars) are absurd. I don’t mind paying for a good bottle of wine, but 14 dollars for a glass of “I hope this is good” just isnt worth it. But the technology was impressive, if only we can get a wine bar to make the wine truly approachable.

Well my favorite wine bar, was a wine shop in Kobe (Japan), called Bellier. Free Wine / Sparkling tastings on Sat, Sun, they would have 5 – 15 wines on the counter. random tastings, tastings by region, by type, awesome place for a hot summer afternoon….. but it closed…

Oh, on Clo. I like the concept, but I’d rather have stone and wood around than metal and plastic, not to mention it seemed noisy in a “busy mall” kind of way. Good wine selection and I do like the machines (if they let you purchase just a taste as an option).

Wow, really bad ass…however, the location doesnt look very cosy and comfortable to me to drink a glass of wine. Wouldnt be an enjoyable bar for me, but its interesting to see how winebars can look like. Think this one would not run in Germany, though the table is great. The design at CinCin in Reno, NV, was beautiful and comfortable but their selection was disappointing, I had a great time at the Double Helix in Las Vegas and closer to home I’ve only been to The Bounty Hunter in Napa, they have a great selection but getting in there anytime after 6 pm is almost impossible!

The last one I remember going to was Morrell Wine Co. ?? next to Dean & Deluca next to Rockefeller Center. 2 Wine Bars that I would like to go to are Darryl’s in New Brunswick and Rosie’s Wine Bar in Garwood. Maybe this summer…actually there are plenty of wines in the cellar to try.

QOTD: 55 degrees in Atwater Village, and CitySip in Echo Park. Totally different wine lists. 55 degrees is better to go and hang out with friends, more intimate. CitySip, more for the fun atmosphere. Also, has some great Portuguese and Spanish wines. Owner is great too and she is very knowledgeable. I like Nicole a lot. Both have reasonably priced flights and the lists are constantly changing.

I don’t get out to a lot of wine bars, but on a recent visit to LA a buddy of mine took me to AOC and told the house to just bring us what they recommend for each course and each wine. Awesome experience. Great wines. Amazing food.

The next time I am in NYC, Clo will be added to my to do list. The Star Trek tech is beyond Bad Ass…..A new word needs to be coined, as this is bad ass to the Nth power my man!

QOTD: I have been all business the last couple of years, so have not been in a wine bar since 2006! LOL Maybe I need to get to Clo sooner rather than later!

Really impressive tech and wine bar: Fun, useful, and compelling.

Great show for the topic and exposure to something new out there in the wine world.

    Thanks!

Thanks Gary for showing us this cool melding of wine and technology. I’ll have to get down there and check it out.

My favorite wine spot is not necessarily exclusively a wine bar but I love to enjoy my wines in the killer atmosphere at the 121 Restaurant in the Oxford Airport. The wine list has some real hidden gems that complement the menu quite nicely. Check it out.

    Gary!

Great shows lately. I like that you are returning to your roots with a clean and concise show about one or two wines. Keep the nerdiness going! Now you need to do a show about the German grape Dornfelder. Question of the Day: When was the last time you drank a Dornfelder and what was it? Mine was two months ago and it was an ‘03 Gutzler Flur 1 #361. My favorite wine bar? Wine Splash in North Park San Diego. In many respects just like CLO, but without the fancy table.

    Hey Gary.
We are a couple of golfers on the PGA European Tour following your every move on winelibrary tv. We are close to having watched every episode now, and we are loving it. Always nice to have something to do in the evenings in the hotels around the world. Keep up the great work. Kudos from Norway and Sweden. How about some more Sauternes tastings;) Gotta keep Mott happy!!

Came across your book on 101 wines, and enjoyed it. Now I am starting to enjoy your shows. However, being in Iraq current, I can’t sample many of the vintages that you have discussed. I have two questions for you. First, I am wondering if you have every done a tasting on the Rubicon Estate’s flagship wine? I have had the 2004, and the 2005, and truly enjoyed them. There is also a unique story I got while there that I think you would enjoy. Second, I am planning two weeks in the southeastern part of Australia, and wondering if you could suggest some wineries in the Hunter Valley region, or around Melbourne. I don’t think I will be able to get to the Barrossa region to take in their offerings. Again, thank you for your shows, and your enthusiasm. I am new to wine, and expanding my horizons, and your shows will help me do that, even when I can’t sample any until I return home.

I want to go visit this wine bar NOW, GV!!!! Makes me wish I lived in NY, just so I can check out some of these places.

    Maggi Four

Very slick wine bar! I agree with some of the other posters that it could use a touch of warmth mixed in with the steely coolness…maybe a fire place feature and some velvety seating. You rock Gary, I’m learning a lot from you!

QOTD: Hitimes wine bar in Costa Mesa, Ca.

  200. July 5, 2009

    Jeffrey

GREAT SHOW!! Well my favorite wine bar would have to be Vino (Encino, CA). Vino has a very knowledgeable and friendly staff with a wonderful boutique wine list. Fights range from $10 to $20.

Gary, love it when you go on location. I appreciated the technological foray at Clo but I must be a romantic because I prefer an old style wine bar. I always felt that a wine bar should make you feel as though you just stepped in from the vineyard, even in NY.

QOTD: Living in North Georgia (suburb of Atlanta) for three years now and haven’t found a wine bar yet. If someone knows of one let me know.

Gary- first as a Jet season tix holder since 1968– love the J…E….T….S paraphanalia throughout your show– my favorite wine bar– no doubt– in the Portland PDX Airport– you can get a glass of Silver Oak Napa Valley for $20/glass, also grat Oregon Pinos (which you should review (Panther Creek, Domaine Serene, etc…)– also visited a wine bar in St. Emillion in the village where you get a glass of Cheval Blanc for $100 euros.

I love it when you go places! Despite the fact that I think Mott is a ROCK STAR, I am a huge fan of the Flip Camera! I did like it more when you sat down to taste, because when you were moving around and showing us stuff, I thought that the movement was a little much…

QOTD: I need to get out more. I have never been to a wine bar, let alone what I would consider a good one!

Gary..you have to post episode #686 on the right side of the page, along with other very memorable episodes, ie, the tasting out in the freezing rain/snow, and the “I eat everything from jam to dirt” episode. Episode #686 when you introduce the masses to little Misha is an instant classic.

That wine list is state of the art and where lists *should* be going. What I want when ordering an unfamiliar wine is info, info, info. Not really wild about the self-service part of the bar–once I leave my home I don’t really want to serve myself.

QOTD: don’t have a favorite, but if forced to I’d say Lee’s Wine Bar (Tallahassee)

  215. July 6, 2009

    Sebastian

Clo looks too Start Ship Enterprise for me. I think it appears too uptight, with its hermetically sealed bottle cabinets. I’m as nerdy as anyone here, but I think places like this risk giving wine a bad name.

My favourite Melbourne (Australia) wine bar is Joe’s Shoe Shop in High Street Northcote. Excellent selection of wines, and they’ll order pizza from their neighbour Meine Leibe, one of the town’s best pizza joints.

Enjoyed the episode at the wine bar. Especially because I am in the process of opening one hear in Canton, Ohio. I like the idea of every so many episodes traveling to diff locations for the shows. The Wine Room in Winter Park, just North of Orlando, FL. For me it was the original Enomatic bar three or four years ago and I couldn’t keep my jaw from dropping to the floor. To the day I still think it’s the nicest one I’ve been to.

Hey – Cool place. Thanks for introducing us to it. One question – How do they prevent their wines from getting oxidized? What I mean is, how long ago was that bottle opened that you tried – 1 hour, 1 day, 1 week?

I have a Rolf Binder ‘Heinrich’ a while back – it was phenomenal for £10.. fruit bomb-ish, but unbelievably smooth and balanced. So much better (and less alcoholic) than anything I’ve had from Molly Dooker.

QOTD – There is a great store in London called The Sampler that has a similar set-up, but you can order in small/med/large glasses. Makes it a lot cheaper to sample some of the ‘wine icons’ when you can just buy a small sip.

I love that you’re honest about wines, even to close friends. I noticed this change over the course of your episodes and its a refreshing feature of your show. Cork in Dallas uptown is fun! It’s a wine shop that also has a tasting center. They have their tasting bottles in those same kind of cases as Clo. They also use a store card to purchase wine, but that one you load up ahead of time. They have several tasting stations that are themed–regionals, whites, reds, collectibles, staff recs, etc. And they change it up every month or so. It’s a fun way to try some wines you might never have considered otherwise.

I like Vintage in downtown Philly. It’s where I actually got my wine start.

I know a lot of people like Tria in Philly. There are two locations for Tria and the one on it’s either 11th or 12th street was VERY snobbish. The waitresses were very stuck up and seemed to perpetuate the stereotypes that make the average joe steer away from wine. I’ve heard good thinkgs about the Tria on twenty something street.
