lines of the day – ‘I just used the word ‘play’ 9 times in the last five minutes.’, ‘nuts in my mouth are very exciting, yeah I said it’, and ‘It’s like someone took Pinnochio and stuck him up my nose.’

Phenomenal episode as these blind tastings always are. Loved it, especially the fact that the 96 point Parker wine was scored 68 points by our man. Also featured the most ill-informed, ridiculous, downright stupid comment ever read out by GV. Whoever sent that piece of rubbish in should be ashamed of themselves.

When I was a little kid in the 70s my favorite number was 4, since I was the 5th child. I don’t understand it either, it just made sense on a visceral level.

Funny that Gary has said Wine library TV doesn’t bring in much business, but then why is it the top 2 spots from the blind taste are now sold out on Wine Library? lol… I think it’s having more effect than he knows.

Just had a 2004 Quinta Vale D. Maria and rated it 90+. Pretty solid wine especially after being opened for a hour or so.

Late catching this episode. Good one but once again it shows how difficult it is to gauge purchasing. Every bottle is a surprise. Enjoyed a Liano Sangiovese/Cabernet Sauvignon on the weekend. Had a Muscadet Sevre et Maine with Vietnamese earlier this week.Just ok. When I tuned in you were tasting Muscats.Spooky. 8 has a nice ring to it for me. Went to Old Orchard Beach for the first taste of the ocean at 8. Got a seablue transistor radio as a gift. 8 makes me smile and so do you. Today I felt your sadness while reading the critique on your Russian-ness agression blah blah. You can’t please all of the people all of the time.Just when everything is going great (new baby, book deals etc. etc.,oh and 700+ gifts to us someone comes along and whacks you. Why? C’est La Vie. You and a little bit of me we have changed the wine world.

  • Bro, watching right now and can’t stop laughing at the wine #4 comments, including the “yeah I said it” with the smurk on your face. Nice!

I love the blind tastings shows! Really enjoyed the dicotomy between your scores and the critic’s scores. It really proves you can’t know if you are going to like something that was given a high score unless you have tested your palate against that same reviewer. (and even then you may get caught).

QOTD: I drank a Mitollo GAM Shiraz 2005 and rated it 89 points (big fruit but still enjoyable).

  • GV,

Enjoyed this show, though 7 is a lot to try.

I LOVE the part of this show where you are shocked by the 7th place wine and you say “that’s all you have to know”. I love the fact that you so disliked such a well respected wine, blindly. I think it’s GREAT.

    Fantastic stuff. Keep it up.

Side QOTD: 31, it’s prime, it’s odd and black on roulette.
    QOTD: 2007 Montepulciano d?Abruzzo, Dama, Marramiero 88

Late getting to this episode as well. Loved the show. Do not even try to curb your Russian non-drunken enthusiasm. You are a breath of fresh air. I enjoyed the Hamilton Russell Chardonnay at a South African wine dinner at the famed Arrows restaurant in Ogunquit, Maine last November. I was intrigued, surprised and I wasn’t the only one in the room talking about that wine. And kudos to Argentina. Both Argentina and Chile seem to be making some wine magic south of the Equator.

No favorite number really. I love typography and some numbers in some fonts I find odd, others beautiful. I have always loved 3’s I suppose. 4’s can be handsome. I like to choose seat #13 on an plane because it’s a great seat and no one ever wants it. Silly. But like you, i respect people’s preferences. More good isle seats for me.

Are there any buildings with a 13th floor?

    Thanks for a great show.

My favorite number is also “5” and this is because for some reason that’s the number I always received in sports when I was a kid. Naturally, I became very fond of number 5

Happy B-day Lizzy V! Granache is the most widely planted grape, and i didnt use wiki or google, i remember this funfact from you. that russian comment was borderline racist. just a comment, but ive noticed every blind tasting, without fail, you have to pause to find a pen. quirky, and thats why we love it. fav number is 11, and i drank the vietti barolo 05. with some penne bolognese.

  • Hey Gary,

I am confused by your points system. It seems to me that you are scoring wines based on how much you like them. Shouldn’t you judge a wine based on the overall quality of the wine (wine making)? I can’t believe that Robert Parker would score this wine a 96, presumably based on objective quality, and you would give the same wine a 68!
I do agree that you should trust your palate, and that should be based on weather or not you like a wine, and this I agree with totally. But placing a score on a wine should be as objective as possible…

It is probabably going to be a species called vitis vinifera no one knows for sure. It?s easy to quantify the acreage in the more developed countries like the US, France, Germany, Italy, etc. as they do regular censi of agriculture. But some countries, for any number of reasons, do not do a census of their vineyards.

Nice job Gary. I had fun on this.
    My favorite number is 2.
    QOTD:
    1. 1989 Theo Loosen Riesling Kabinett from the Mosel. I would score it about 90 points. It was great to have a Riesling which was that old. It’s a real shame that everybody here in Germany dricks wine so young. Totally ridiculous in my opinion

    2. 1997 Theo Loosen Riesling Spätlese. I would score this one about 92 points. Again a very nice aged Riesling. So all in all very nice wineweekend.

  • I love the blind tastings, this Episode was fun and the look on your face when you saw the difference in score on the last wine was priceless. I think I will do some blind coffee reviews in the future, I think it is a great way of breaking down all preconceived notions.

side qotd?: my favorite number is 33

just saw the episode:awesome…..love the fact that u r one self confident man:both as regards slanders directed at you and point swings between you and other wine critics.
GV i reckon you should add the word “FREE” in your intro line, just to remind some people who seem to forget and begin to take you and WLTV for granted!

QOTD:too much liquid went down my throat this weekend, but the chartreuse we had last night takes 99+ points:IT GOT THE JOB DONE!!

    BRILLIANT episode
    One of my new favourites
Haven’t googled it but I’m pretty sure the most planted grape is actually in Spain and is an obscure varietal used for blending/brandy etc. Can’t remember the name but I think it begins with ‘A’!!

GREAT EPISODE!!!!!!! i love the blind tasting…and really fascinating results…I definitely have not explored the South African wine world enough…

QOTD: Bordeaux wine by Rothschild, 2007 ABC, Cabernet, merlot and cab franc… it was a decent wine esp for the price, which was 6 euro, but nothing groundbreaking or earth-shattering…i think i’d give it and 84 or 85…and at that prive I would def recommend it

Loved this blind chardonnay tasting show, you learn a lot when there are no signs to lead the way. I was very sad to hear that completely cruel and unnecessary diatribe of Deedyk’s – you were humble and generous in your response to him, yet did not need to be with someone like that. Who knows what possessed him to attack a particular ethnic group like that, but there’s no excuse for such shabby behaviour.

I would guess (without Google) that the world’s most planted grape is the Cabernet Sauvignon, with Chardonnnay as it’s white second. I’m too late to win any race or contest, but that’s my guess.
