I still want a Texas Wine show!

QOTD: Said this on ustream and I’m sticking with it… Chicken sandwich w/ Alvocado FTW

That was a fun little show, good to see it when the other states actually have something that may be worth consuming! Love the guerrilla journalism tears through the building.

    QOTD: Straight in my piehole!

That’s a classic episode. just love the true reaction an expression while tasting these tree candidates. The how-do-you-like-your-chicken-question was awesome.

I love the roving camera work again. I wondered where you’d disappear to on ustream.

Woohoo Adam’s birthday shout out as well :)

What on earth was the stapler effect in the background?

You should challenge Nathan to a thumb wrestling contest and tape it before he leaves :)

QOTD: Southern fried coating on it.

Loved the roving camera. It’s alot of fun to see your operation, especially for those of us that won’t be goint out to the east coast for a while.

AZ wines? Interesting. Didn’t seem to bring the thunder, and at that price point… bring it down AZ and get a following (see WA state GO MARINERS!)

QotD: Herb and Lemon rotiessireierier (sp?) so the meat just falls off the bone of the drumstick which I slurp down like a popsicle.

    nice show.
QOTD I like it best when it´s rubbed in with a sauce of fresh ginger, honey and garlic and then baked in the oven…

I love AZ…. go all the time. I’m gonna check out some when I go this year. I love the not so steady cam work of Mott’s. He’s got a future in Hollywood.

Hey, I wanna be an intern. How do I do that? Can I do it from my hammock here at the shore? By the way, when are you stopping in down here? You know you have an open invitation. I’ve been in the sun since 10:00am. I saw 3 clouds all day. I don’t know what it’s like up there but I guess unless you have skylights in the building you wouldn’t know….. :(

QOTD: I love KFC. I can eat a bucket all by myself. But those fried chicken swanson dinners from 35 years ago run a close second. That taste alwasy stuck in my mind for some reason. Maybe because when I was 12 I actually had a mind.

I’m going out on the boat in a little bit here after dinner to watch the sunset …. jus sayin!!!

Gary, when you stuck your head in front of the camera after Mott zoomed in on the NYG calender, that was some comedy gold. You are really tearing it up with the spontaneity lately, keep it up!

I know the guy who makes the Kokopelli wine, he makes some New Mexico wine too. Your description reminded me of some of his lower end stuff here in NM too, he does however have some high end stuff that’s pretty tasty. We really need to get a New Mexico Thunder show one of these days.

QOTD: I absolutely love fried chicken, especially chicken and waffles…that’s the bomb. My other fave is chicken wings, I’m really excited about the upcoming football season because we have a new wing place in town….football, wings, beer or vino that’s the stuff right there buddy.

Awesome show. Thanks for the impromptu shout out!! You made my month. I hope Nathan does well when he goes back to AZ. What did he do there as an intern?

I’ve had very few AZ wines, but the ones that I had from Page Springs and Caduceus were excellent. I had one from Tuscon that was waaaaay sugarfied, I couldn’t even stomach one glass.

QOTD: The rotisserie chicken from the grocery store is by far my fav.

Fun show (though the wines weren’t all that great).

As any new region to producing wine, finding what you are good at is key.

QOTD: Chicken is a meat that can be prpared in so many ways. I like it roasted in the winter and marinated and cooled for salades in the summer (Mmmm, lemon and herb, mandarin and spinach salade with bacon).

    Keep it up!

  27. July 15, 2009

    Mr. V!

Great show; love the whole idea of exploring new wine regions. Two years ago you were screaming Argentina and look; Argentina Chard takes the gold in your blind tasting. A true “Judgment of Vaynerchuk”, changed the wine world forever.

QOD: in large quantities, smothered in hot sauce, during wing night at one of Calgary’s many fine establishments.

So that Pillsbury Roan is an upside down GSM type. Though I’m as flexible as adventurous, I’d go Rhone. Je voudrais un vin Francais. But my French… not so good.

Yay Callaghan! I’m w/ ya all the way on this one. I too, discovered them in 2000, while in retail, and their worth and effort was evident then, but by now, I’m many years beyond interest/ tolerance for zin/fruit intensity. But their price and quality level, in my mind, is perfect for a party where you can share freely, yet casually, and know that the good lookin’, classy gal, who , unfortunately suffices with Plonk Brand “Y”, will be pleasantly impresed. Everyone wins.

  32. July 15, 2009

    PrimoVino

Good show as usual. Can’t say I’ll be trying AZ wines anytime soon though, too many great things on the list ahead of them and it seems these were just par for the course.

QOTD: My favorite way to consume chicken is orally. As in eating it! :) But I like it prepared just about every way… spicy wings, panko breaded breast with a little prosciutto inside, or even a grilled chicken panini w/ kalamata tapenade and gouda. Arrgh, now I’m hungry.

    Keep up the good work.

    BobbyTiger

Well, good for you Arizona. You held your own.
Gary, I like very much the “States” reviews. I know that some have been clunkers in the past, but for me, that’s ok, as I still enjoy the trip.
QOTD- My favorite way to enjoy chicken, is to eat it. How else?

  40. July 15, 2009

    JasonA

I agree with the statement about wineries just getting into the game maybe charging too much. Several TN wineries that have decent wine, I think the price point scares some away.

QOTD: Chicken breast marinted in zesty itallian seasoning, and then grilled. Served on top of rice. Love it!!

Great Show love to see new areas for wine explored further. It really excited me how the wine industry is continuing to grow in the US and around the world.

    QOTD: Chicken enchiladas!

    RIch Higgins

Great show, AGAIN! You are a force.

Chicken – I’ve tried it almost any way it can be cooked. My favorite is BBQ’d over charcoal with indirect heat and then topped with steaming hot Montgomery Inn BBQ sauce, with roasted corn on the cob and (of course) potato salad. And, although I am a huge red wine drinker – it needs a hefty white.

Love the show. Love the energy. Love the thunder!

    Dominus

Actually a pretty damn good show since I have close friends in AZ who tout their wines all the time! I must admit, the last one looked promising and I’ll have to try and find a few bottles.

QOTD: I like Sir Lawrence’s (Jacque Pepin’s) version above though I have done that with Cornish hens and a brick! Divine but since I need to come up with a chicken recipe, I place a hunk of Boursin cheese in the cavity and tarragon herbs, garlic, butter and more Boursin under the skin and roast it on the grille. Absolutely orgasmic and match it with an Australian Dead Arm Shiraz or an Oregon Amalie Robert Pinot. Yum

    Cheers!

GV lookin like Joe Pesci at the end there with the wave. :)

    Thanks Gary

Nice show. If you’re talking of seriously expanding your palate I’m just wandering when you’ll try some wines from Asia (China, Japan, Korea)?

QOTD: What a tough one, everyone loves chicken. Too difficult so I’ll give you my favourite five ways: fried in a burger, marinated with satay sauce on a stick, roasted, in soup and sashimi.

    Cheers

    QOTD: Chicken tagine & couscous.

Call me square, but I like the old-school WLTV episodes the best: tasting a slew of wines, especially blind, free associating flavour profiles, the *majority* of the talk is about wine. Very high info QPR.

    North Carolina Wine TV (Kipp)

    Gary,

Love that you did a show based on one of the other 46 states. We have had very similar experience in our reviews of North Carolina Wines. Price is a big issue as well as distribution. We have found that some grapes seem to do very well here.

I hope that would will join us one day on an episode of North Carolina Wine TV. We are happy to come to you.

    Great show.

GV – my Dad lives in Tucson so I was excited you did the show on Arizona wines. Haven’t been to the wineries yet. I’ll try to get my hands on a Callaghan to give it a shot sometime.

QOTD: That’s 2 chicken questions in a week! You must be eating a lot of chicken recently. I’m a HUGE fan of the Peruvian style rotisserie chicken with either fried yucca (or steak fries). There are a ton of good places in the DC area, with the best being El Pollo Rico in Arlington. DELICIOUS!!!

QOTD: Casbah chicken & couscous (my favorite to make) or the Sonoma(?) quesadilla from a local slightly fusion mexican restaurant (chicken & apples LOL, with melted gouda and almond slices).

Unfortunately Tennessee is stil trying to figure out what grapes do well here, versus what grapes the growers wish did well here. There’s too much rain. North Carolina is a little further along in that respect, especially western piedmont or mountains. Some decent Italian grapes growing there.

And with the new Tennessee shipping law in effect this month, will Wine Library be purchasing a license to ship here???? Think about it.

Being a daily watcher of the show for a year or so now, I obviously love what you’re doing. I have a comment or two about the beginning of your show though. I like the beginning graphics…the animation & the colors are good. I must be honest though, the music is starting to get to me! I end up fast-forwarding the first 10-seconds until your intro because I can’t handle it anymore. I don’t know what it is, but it’s just not music to my ears. Ever think about changing it???

What a laid back working environment the WL staff has. No wonder they’re always so helpful and cool when I call. Can I intern there?

QOTD: How don’t I like chicken? I can tell you this, I only like dark meat. And, like the red bean…is a Japanese thing. But, in no particular order: BBQ’d, fried, adobo, curried, etc.

    (I hope you read this)
    Gary,

This is a multi-episode post. First your Monday Post. That 7 bottle Chardonnay episode rocked! The best in a long time. I appreciated the thought Ian put into the order of the tastings. Your reactions were genuine and your information very informative. As for the negative comment you read about your demeanor, that guy is a is full of s**t. His comments about your personality and ethnic/cultural background proved 100% that his opinions are based on ignorant prejudiced beliefs and not on an objective assessment of your personality. His generalizations of Russians (largest country in the world by land area) goes to show that he probably hates 5-10 other cultures for the same reasons. AND because you gave a heart-felt reaction of pain and sadness goes to show that his “assessment” of you is totally wrong. Do not in anyway let tripe like that lessen who you are.

I also loved this Arizona episode. I almost booed when the Pillsbury wine was spelled “Roan”, but them I looked in Wikipedia. Did you notice the horse galloping on the front label? Roan is a play on words for a color of a horse (or cow). Check out the link below for full details:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roan_(color)

I noticed you held back with scoring today and referenced negative comments from Monday’s show. Don’t limit yourself. If you want to be more objective, give two wine scores. One will be your score for your palate, and one will be what you think the general public would score it. Different perspectives are great, bashing your own is not.

    Cheers,

    Mike Nelson

Gary, just found your show a few weeks ago after someone turn me onto it at Caduceus tasting room grand opening, I’m already a hardcore Vayniac!!! forgive the email address, been my nickname since I was 13, 38 now….drummer.. always bringing the thunder….Aaaaaaaaanyways,

thank you so much for hitting Az today, weird thing about it is …I JUST got back from (live in Tucson) Sonoita, I am beginning to help work the vineyards at Canello Hills, with Tim and Joan Mueller (right next door to Callahan) so it was almost spooky that you did this episode today. Good good sign for my future in wine.

Sorry for length really..first post ever. Ugh ….Thanks , was not surprised NOT to see Cad or Stronghold/pagesprings as you covered them with MJK and Eric a lil while back, but I do think if you were gonna hit AZ today they are some of the bigger players, don’t you? and would have shown up better in rep for our Appell.s than Pillsberry and Koko, don’t you?

Either way thanks again for this Ep. I watch about 5 ep.s a day man, fantastic!!! But If anyone wastes the time to read this reply of mine I want to stress I’ve tasted alot of our wines out here and people are doing interesting things with wine here, give us some time, I think you will find our region will find its face and it will be a unique new player on the scene, and if you’ve ever seen a monsoon here then you know…we always bring the thunder, peace Vayniacs, sorry for huge reply

Enjoyed todays episode. As a 25 year resident of AZ I was disappointed in the Kokopelli review. I have tasted this wine at numerous events but never purchased any since I agree it is over priced. However, I thought the wine was pretty good. We will try to get some of the Callaghan in the future.

I have noticed the last couple of shipments of wine I have received here are leaking through the cork due to the hot weather. However, the taste still seems to be fine. Is this a problem?

Great episode, love when you bring us content that’s outside of the box whether it’s regions or varietals. My only complaint is that It’s not so useful to me when I can’t go out to a local wine shop and buy any of the regions/varietals featured on the episode.

For 24 Bucks I could buy a decent Gigondas or Vacqueyras.. I don’t think I’ll be reaching for any Az. wine anytime soon. I find it a bit interesting that you initially bought some Arizona wine for Wine Library because Robert Parker gave it a good score. The Chardonay blind tasting you did a few days back should be a good indication that buying a wine that Parker scores high doesn’t really make a lot of sense. You scored the Mt. Edna 68 points while he gave it 96 points. From a business point of view you can slap on a shelf talker that Parker scored Brand X wine 95 points and It’s probably going to draw attention to your customers. About 37 minutes in the blind tasting episode you said that the wide gap in the way you two scored the wine was “borderline embarrissing” – You didn’t finishing the sentence though it was clear you half said embarrissing. You are the one that has taught me to “trust my own Palate.” I admit that I look at certain wine critics and their ratings but, I am beginning to think it’s basically a bunch of bull. Don’t you think wine producers are tailor making wines that they know are going to appeal to Parker so they appear in wine publications and sell a lot of wine? I hope most wine producers have a passion for the wine they are making rather than just having in interest in how much money they can make. I realize that it is a business, and if they didn’t make any money it would very hard to get their wine out there. I know as you said you “Respect Robert Parker immensely.” and I think putting him on a pedestal is not such a good idea. Not to mention just a few monts back he had to write an apology about one of his critic/writers for accepting flights(plane no wine!) and lavish meals and hotels for free to go taste some wine. This surely impacts objectivity.. Anyway.. Sorry for being so long winded, but I think it’s something important for people to think about.

    Qotd- Probably Chicken Vindaloo.

No worries Gary. My mind makes rapid jumps like that too. Isn’t is the worst when you mention something that was a few links down the chain and everyone’s wondering what the heck you’re talking about? But for me, a perfectly roasted chicken with crispy chicken over root vegetables basted in the drippings – that’s my favorite way to consume chicken.

You mentioned Roy Rogers near the end. He was born in Ohio. Like you, he is a Scorpio. Did well in Cali.

My rule of thumb for wines from the other 47 states is if you take the price and divide in in half; you then have the price that the wine should be sold for. This definitely holds for Ohio with the exception of Riesling which has a chance to be fairly priced.

QOTD: I to take the hind quarter pieces and brine them in a salted apple juice over night; then smoke them for a few hours and then finish on the grill.

So I’m really diggin the whole “taking it to the streets” feel with the moving camera; it’s the surprise factor that makes it awesome. So I’m thinking for a few episodes you and Mott should walk down to the floor with the camera, go to the checkout line, and whatever the customer who you’re talking to is buying – that’s what you’re tasting on that episode. That could make for some entertaining tastings.

QOTD: rotisserie. Hands down. I’ll take down the whole chicken in one sitting, no questions asked.

Arizona wines!! I didn’t know they make wines in Arizona and after this episode I know why.
Besides, non of these wines are available in Belgium or in Europe.

The wines in this episode where not that interesting but the show itself was very nice to look at.

QOTD. I have dozens of likes. With lemon, roasted, truffled, in risotto, in saltcrust, fried, …… but the one I love the most is ….. can’t decide.

  128. July 16, 2009

    Scott

Gotta agree with Mark, “beer-butt” or beer can chicken is the only way to eat chicken. You get a deliciously crispy exterior from the convection cooking of the grill and mouth-wateringly juicy meat that’s damn hard to dry out thanks to the steam from the beer. Just make sure you make or get a good spice rub and work it under the skin of the chicken before cooking (and put some in the beer!). Spice rub on the outside of the chicken makes the skin taste good. Spice rub under the skin makes the WHOLE CHICKEN taste good.

Also, tangentially, a couple episodes back you read a comment from a viewer who criticized your style and blamed it on your Russian blood. Let me just plead with you to ignore that comment entirely. Your style is (partly) what got you here today. For every one viewer like that one there are 20 to 50 who watch because of your style. It was hard to watch you try to avoid saying “play” for the rest of the episode. Let Gary be Gary! Viva WLTV!

Thanks for the Arizona episode. I lived in AZ for almost 30 years before moving back to the East. Explored AZ “wine country” in the southern desert..Sonoita, Elgin, fun to see vineyards in the land of cacti and gila monsters. Very interesting episode, although how many is that on Arizona now? I was surprised by your scoring of the second wine vis-a-vis your tasting notes. You made its sound decent so I was figuring at least a score in the low 80s and then you killed it with a 78.

I always like when you taste wines that are as uncommon as these. I’m pretty sure there’s no AZ wine available in Maine (as always, I could be wrong). Each time you taste something as obscure as this that’s not even available at your store I remember that you have never done a Madeira show with a vintage Madeira at the end. I haven’t brought it up in a while, and you mentioned #16, so I think it’s time. Your confusion over the wine hitting you in the head was hilarious. I don’t eat chicken.

Hey great to see you doing more AZ wines, although kokopelli wines are like bottom of the barrel here in the state. By far the worst winery. They are moving to the texas area and page Springs Winery bought there vineyards in Az. So we should see some better future wines coming from the area. Thanks for keeping our state on the map and better wines will always be emerging from here!

OK…you finally lured me into commenting. I’ve been watching your episodes from my cabin on the Current River for a couple of months now and find them both informative and entertaining. As a Missouri hillbilly and novice wine connoisseur, I was curious to see if you would sample wines from lesser known wine areas…and now I know that you do! Many states, including Missouri, have wineries whose offerings I’m sure many would quickly dismiss, but I’m glad to see that you’ll go out on the occasional limb and sample some wines from little-known wine areas.

I love the show, and I like my chicken…dead, first of all…and then grilled with a variety of seasonings! Thanks again!

Yeah!!!! Az wines, but I think the wrong ones. Callaghan Z5 is good, but there is Arizona Stronghold and Dos Cabezas as well that is very good.Oh yeah and Maynard’s wines are out of this world for Az wines….

QOTD: Kung Pao Chicken is a spicy stir-fry dish from the Sichuan Province in Central China. It is prepared with marinated diced chicken, crunchy peanuts, diced red bell pepper, and sliced zucchini, all tossed in the wok with fresh green onions… My favorite from Panda Express. (A W S O M E)

QOTD (#700. most memorable WLTV): SORRY. Got behind. Watched 700 & wanted to comment. No hesitation. Two-buck Vaynerchuck!
It was really, really, the 1st ever episode that I can remember watching. I think I found your site and clicked it, though it may not have been the current episode. Then I promptly walked out of the office (restaurant sommelier/mgr) and grabbed the nearest girl, Melissa (all female staff) & made her watch it. “action-figure” is still a descriptor in our restaurant!

    QOTD (response to this episode).
    Chipolte Lime Ck. Grilled.
AZ wines remind me of our TX wine industry. You actually mentioned it, need to find the right varietals and quit trying to imitate CA or France!
I spoke w/ Kim McPherson, best of Texas winemakers, and he thinks TX should do more Rhone or Spanish. NOT cab and chard.
Sounds like AZ is in that same quandry.
Great show. Still ‘changing the wine world’

If you’ve never had chicken through a straw, well, you just ain’t livin’.

Everyone’s giving recipes. I don’t get it. When I heard the question I immediately thought “method of delivery”. Chopsticks, a fork, fingers? I guess the real question is, how would Buck Rogers consume chicken?

Next show – Michigan rieslings. Ha, just kidding.

I stopped by the Wine Library on my way home(Virginia) from New York this past Sunday. It was my first visit, and my wife and I were impressed with what we saw, and purchased.

Gary – love the show. I don’t comment very often, but i have been a faithful viewer lately. Interesting facts. Gretzky’s kids go to the school I teach at – interesting fact since he was recently on. I have the same name – AJ – as your youngest brother (Liz told me that when she responded to my birthday wish). My favorite number is 4. I drank a Carmenere this last week – it was excellent, reminded me of a spanish Tempernillo. I also drank a Muscat due to your recent show. The Carmenere i score a 89+ and it was only 8 bones. The Muscat I score a 84 – but good effort. And of course, Chicken and dumplings! had to respond to a bunch of stuff all at once.

love the show. keep it up!

QOTD: #1. Brined, then roasted properly [180C 1hr/kg]. Too classic to be bumped from number 1 spot. However. Rotisserie chicken, done properly, may at times nudge roasted out. Depends on execution. However. If both of those methods are done poorly, a chicken fricassee in cream sauce can nudge them BOTH out.

My stepdad is from Arizona and did some touring of wineries recently. He’ll be glad to know you found one that brings the thunder.

QOTD – Barbecued chicken. I think the next second-tier region you need to explore is New Jersey. I was out a couple weeks ago from California ahead of my move and actually found some good stuff. My favorite was Silver Decoy. I thought of you when I tried their Traminette. Very nice transition from minerality to some “cutting the tongue” acid. Also generally found Cab Franc seems to do very well in South Jersey.

    Sam Pillsbury

Thanks for your review of my 2006 Roan Red…it did illustrate to me the dangers to those of us who chose to make some wines that are lighter food wines rather than huge alcohol blockbusters…between the Kokopelli and the Callaghan it’s hard to savor a lighter red…I say light, as that was a deliberate choice in the blending, rather than ‘thin’, the term you used, as I wanted to make a red wine that would pair with lighter fare.
I was a little surprised you didn’t get the pun on Rhone, Roan with the accompanying horse…of course the Fed won’t let anyone put Rhone on a wine label, and the vineyard is on an old horse ranch…and finally, your comment on the grape source…it’s the exact same grape source as the Maynard Keenan Stronghold grapes you liked so much recently, vines I planted in the high desert 9 years ago…but thanks for looking at Arizona wines, your 78 was raised by a Spectator 86 and a Mark Tarbell 93 on that wine, and I hope you get a chance to try my other 100% Arizona wines in the future.

    QOTD

My favourite way to ‘consume’ chicken is a chicken thigh (definitley the tastiest bit) and bacon casserole with chillis, some red wine thrown in and plenty of seasoning.

Gary how do I get a job as an intern? I am however not from Arizona but infact from North Yorkshire (England). We have vineyards here and everyone laughs that off too. I just got a distinction in WSET intermediate, I’m well chuffed about that.

Nice show. I am a little late on this comment, but seems like AZ has a little bit of work to do regarding its wine.
QOTD: Fried chicken is the only way to go. Try it @ Adhoc in the Napa Valley. It is one of the Thomas Keller restaurants, not really known for food like fried chicken, but it is to DIE for!

    AZVinesAndWines

Thanks for your continued foray into Arizona wines. Although they haven’t come out on the top of your favorites, keep on sipping our wines . . . there are many good wines being produced here. I have to disagree with your intern, Arizona supports its local products, including wine. The tasting rooms are packed and more wineries are popping up all the time. Dick
Erath has a vineyard here and should start producing commercially very soon. Although its difficult for your viewers to purchase the wines in other states due to the crazy wine laws, they should be sure to include at least one day visiting wine country when traveling to Arizona. It’s a great experience and most of the time you have the opportunity to meet the winemakers in person.

interesting episode, though I must say I am still a bit skeptical about the arizona wine industry…but speaking of unexpected wine producing regions, i lived in DC for some years, in which time a friend of a friend of mine who was really into wine brought back probably one of the best rose’s of my life from a vineyard in VA…too bad I don’t remember the name…

I have been to them all and Callaghan’s is by far the best winery in the state of Arizona. Page Springs makes some very good wine, but the majority of their grapes are still sourced from California. I have never had a bad wine from Callaghan’s and their wines has been served at White House dinners on more than one occassion.

I purchased a few very nice wines at Page Springs winery last week, but I will not yet consider their wines Arizona wines until all the grapes are grown in their vineyards.

Gary is correct Arizona is on the move in the wine making world.

How about a show on Texas wines? I’m from TX so I’m partial but I’m curious to know what you think. Been catching the podcasts for about a year now and I’ve learned a lot, thanks!
