Hey GV--thanks for doing the zins--always great to get your take on wines.

QOTD: Staying home, having friends over, letting them decide what to drink. Maybe a Turley, maybe Seghesio (rockpile rocks), maybe a pinot from Selyem. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.
  • Going back to the parent's house to enjoy the secret pack with the fam, and my favorite ex girlfriend. Yes, I've invited the ex to enjoy some turkey and the secret pack with the fam. What a perfect combination!

Well, going to little brothers for thanksgiving...I am taking the wine, haven't made up my mind yet, but prolly going to take a zin, pinot noir, rose, and maybe a petit syrah, and prolly a reisling or a chard too...
  • JayZee
Nice show. I haven't had the Rockpile Vineyard Zin, but I have had several other Seghesio Zins and I have generally liked them quite a bit. very good Zin producer in my book.

QOTD: We are going over my sister-in-law's house to be with her and my brother-in-law and my mother-in-law as well. My wife's brother and his wife may be joining us as well. As for wine, my brother-in-law has a pretty nice cellar as well so I will have to check with him first, but I think I will bring a bottle of Tablas Creek Esprit de Beaucastel.
  • AMM3RD
QOTD: Going to my father's house in Basking Ridge. I want everyone to bring 2 wines in brown paper or foil to be served blind. I'm going to bring...

2006 Arnot-Roberts Syrah Hudson Vineyards "North Block" http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=496701

    and

2006 Ramey Syrah Shanel Vineyard Sonoma Coast http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=528751

I think well balanced Syrah may be over looked for the Thankgiving Table?????? AMM

    hey gary;
not the only way; but certainly one really really good way to not have a dry bird is to deep fry it!! awesome; it has become a family tradition and looked forward to by all. you should try it! and it goes with many wines, but especially an oregon pinot!
thanks for the show! and CW!
  • Well since I'm not actually in Nashville, but in Iraq this Thanksgiving there won't be any wines on the table this year. But I'm looking forward to making up for lost time with a bunch of good Zins next spring.
  • Rogmataj
QOTD- Since I work in the restaurant industry I'll be at work Thanksgiving, but I had my Thanksgiving party this past Sunday. It was at my apartment so I had 3 bottles for guests.
Cotes de Provence Domaine Fontanyl 2008 Rose, Beaujolais Domaine Pignard 2008, and Twisted Vine Lodi Zinfandel 2007. The Zin was great with the Fried Cajun Turkey!
  • Mike in C-town
QOTD: Going to my Mom's which will be bittersweet since we lost Dad Labor day weekend. My youngest bro and my sis are doing the 2 family deal. I don't go crazy because I"m the most serious wine enthuisiast of the group. I'll prob bring a 2006 Argyle Reserve Pinot for dindin and an italian red just for enjoying.
  • Don Simpson
hahaha, great finish with pause for Mott... "we're changing the wine world". I also enjoyed "punch you with cake", good stuff!

QOTD: With my girlfriend's family in Millsboro, DE. I make 1 pumpkin and 2 cherry pies from scratch each year. Haven't decided on the wines yet... I was actually also thinking Gigondas or maybe a 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape (haven't had one yet)
  • jboy
Would love to see an episode of your fave zins...

QOTD: Family and friends. Zins will be Ridge Geyserville and a couple Turleys, Pinots from Hartford Court and J. Rochioli. Can't wait!!!
  • Angela Carlson
QOTD: We're doing the two family, two meal day. Lunch at my Mormon in-laws, so alas no wine there, but we're definitely drinking with dinner at my Mom's.
My brother is bringing a NZ Sauvignon Blanc and I'll bring along a 2007 Georges Duboeuf Saint Amour Cuvee Saint Valentine Beaujolais and a 2008 Rosenblum Kathy's Cuvee Viognier. Yummy!!!

As my username suggests, I'm a pretty big zin fan, so I always get excited when I see Zinfandel in the title of one of these episodes. I have to be honest though, I was completely underwhelmed and disappointed when I saw the selection of zins you were tasting. I wasn't familiar with Foxglove and when you're as into zin as I am, usually that's not a good sign if I haven't heard of it, and GV's review seems to support that. I've had a few vintages of the Deloach Russian River and I've always found it to be a pretty mediocre zin. For me, the Russian River is a waste of time when compared to their Forgotten Vines zin, or even the OFS or Gambogi. I'd rather spend $30 on one great bottle of Deloach Forgotten Vines, than $30 on 2 mediocre bottles of Deloach Russian River zin. And for Seghesio, the Rockpile is fine, definitely better than their Old Vine, but not nearly as good as their Home Ranch, or even their Cortina or San Lorenzo. I've tasted pretty much every Zin Seghesio has released over the last 3 vintages and every vintage, the Home Ranch has been the big winner for me (which is funny because GV has tasted all of them on the show now except the Home Ranch and the San Lorenzo). I also think Rockpile Zins in general tend to be a little overrated. Everyone seems to think any Zin from a Rockpile vineyard is going to be stellar, but I've tasted Rockpile zins from Rosenblum (the last 3 vintages), Mauritson, Carol Shelton (the last 2 vintages), and Seghesio (the last 3 vintages) and the only one I've found to be worth buying more of was the Rosenblum. Anyhow, sorry to get all wine snobby on here, I guess I'm just hoping that with so much time left before Thanksgiving, maybe GV will still have time to taste some more zin on the show, hopefully with a little better selection. Hey Gary, I know you used to be a bit of a zinhead, but if you need any suggestions for some selections to redeem zin in an episode, I'd be happy to point you in a better direction.
  • Chippewamike
Heading to my brother-in-laws house to root for the Lions to pull the upset over the Pack. Gonna bring a Frank Family Zin (that you recommended) and probably a Fallaghia (also your recommendation). Both should be fantastic.
  • J Crazy
QOTD: here at home with friends; thinking about pickin up a Moulin-A-Vent
  • John J.
How about a doin a vin jaune episode sometime Gary?
  • John J.
qotd: gonna be w family at my g-ma's house. she loves white zin, which I wont buy. So i'm gonna bring a valdiguie from California. Just about the lightest fruitiest lowest tannin red you can find. Think a beaujolais nouveau, but alot better, yet still around $9-10. I'm bringin a nice German riesling too.
  • Brian
QOTD - Going to Vegas (baby). Wife's family is all gathering there. Very excited because our hosts are huge wine fans. Redirecting my Les Chenes (Livermore) Fall club shipment there (since no shipments to NJ). As I understand it, includes some Syrah and Rousanne (sp?). Typically pretty old world and wonderful!
  • Richard from Charleston
I'm really glad Gary liked the Seghesio Zinfandel! I fell in love with that wine last year and have been on the lookout for it ever since.

I am going to St. Joseph, Missouri to visit my family. My parents are not very interested in wine (2 buck chuck being their bottle of choice) so I'm bringing a grocery store Australian red (Little Penguin Pinot Noir) as a compromise of super cheap and reasonably tasty.
  • QOTD: Heading to Chicago to see the fam and then Milwaukee to see my Great Aunt and her gentleman friend. My dad will bring a 2 or 3 of the 300 bottles in the basement - Love going home!
  • Dana
QOTD - Headed to my parents in Auburn NY for a family gathering. I'll be providing the wine for dinner. Haven't determined the specific wines yet, but I'm leaning towards Oregon pinot noir, Australian sparkling shiraz, Finger Lakes riesling.
  • Jim in Atlanta
QOTD - I am heading to Spain for Thanksgiving with friends. I will be trying lots of Spanish wine while there. I am not a big sherry drinker, but we are going to Jerez to taste sherry and understand more about it. Have a happy one.
  • Marie
Hi Gary. Love your show. I'm new. Just wanted to wish you a VERY VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY~!!!!
  • QOTD: Home! I cook it all and I haven't decided what we're having yet. Got some Gewurtztraminer on cinderellawine.com recently that I might open.
  • QOTD: Going to friends place in Santa Barbara cause I can't make it home to Louisiana. I'll be bringing some Frank Family sparklings, and Frank Family Winston Hill (a.k.a. the beast).
  • Cathy Seghesio
Gary, Thanks for the great descriptors! I'm going to quote you each time I pour the wine. Very happy you enjoyed the Rockpile!

We're hosting at our home here at our San Lorenzo vineyard. Drinking Rockpile, Old Vine and Barbera from the cellar. Moscato to start the day . . . makes the cooking more fun!

    Salute!
    Cathy Seghesio
  • C-Shorty
Nice show, glad to see you taste the Seghesio. It's always staring at me in the store. Your review sums up what my guess was....a good wine but not great enough for me to shell out $30.

QOTD: Staying home with our 1-month old, will have dinner with my wife's family who are local. Probably going to expand the palate and try some Lambrusco with that dinner.

Also, the weekend before will be having a "Friends Thanksgiving" potluck style with 3 other couples. Thinking of making a honey-brined Turkey. Any suggestions for a wine to go with that?
  • YoungDave
QOTD: I'm spending it with a great friend (room mate) and family (not immediate, but first cousin). Here are some likely candidates from what I already have...
    ***2002 Argyle Brut
***2007 Domaine Mas du Bouquet Vaqueras
  • Stacey
mm, zin! We love Dry Creek Valley zins...and we're headed to Healdsburg on Sunday. Our faves include Talty, Quivira, Camellia for value, Papapietro Perry when we can splurge, Forchini, Stryker (ok that's Alexander Valley but close enough). Anything Rockpile is bound to be tasty.

QOTD: The hubby and I are heading to Kauai for Thanksgiving and bringing along a box (!) of Wurtz Riesling and some bottles of whatever we pick up this weekend.
  • QOTD: I will prolly be staying home for Thanksgiving.
  • gottagodrink
QOTD- well, I am the sole wine provider for a gathering of 15 with 8-10 wine drinkers, and I have traditionally brought Seghesio Zin (how 'bout that) usually Old Vine or Cortina, but I am leaning toward Turley this year, probably '05, but might do one '02 for kicks, and '06 Old Vines which is still tight but perfect, IMHO, with the dinner. Cheers!
  • Beeper
QOTD: Off to Grandma's house with some Chateau Pesquie Cotes du Ventoux
  • Here at home for T'kgiving this year. Hosting the in-laws, roasting a free-range bird from a local farm. Thinking of bringing out a white Rhone like a CdP blanc or a white Rhone blend from Australia and a Pinot, though maybe this might be a Zin year, indeed.
  • "I ate the purple berries"," hey ralph, how did they taste", "They taste, buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurning" Hahahaha great simpsons plug Gary, It definitely made me LOL.

Well, being in Canada, I already had thanksgiving. I did contribute to the wine conversation, I bought home some amazing pumpkin beer from the St. Ambroise brewery here in Montreal, I paired that with pumpkin pie, it was absolutely delicious. I also served up a Malivoire Chardonnay, we definitely did more of a Ukrainian influenced thanksgiving, we had tonnes of perogies, we did have the big Bird, cranberry sauce, beautiful stuffing. Wow, I am salivating trying to remember that thanksgiving dinner. Now I also like to celebrate American thanks giving too, why the hell not right, a good excuse to eat some GREAT food. I think I am going to find some Pinot Bianco and maybe see if I can get my hands on a different kind of bird, maybe a partridge. Wouldn't that be fun, I wish I could afford a partridge on a student budget. Maybe If I get enough people into it we could pool some cash and do a communal cooking session.
Fun stuff in my graduate studies life!

The next time you tape a row of episodes please bring a change a shirt...after the 4th show your shirt started to give me a headache :-)
  • Mike
    Hi Gary

Is the aroma of struck match significant of the fact that there was too much sulphur used in the wine making process and the farmyard smell comes from poor wine making hygeine? I always thought that was the case.

I live in England so we dont have thanks giving, however were I going to thanksgiving dinner I would take Champange as it's a bit of a customary thing in England for parties as I'm sure it is with you. I'd like to take something like Pol Roger 96, Billecart Salmon Rose or Ruinart Blanc de Blanc.
  • drew82
Yes! "Tastes like burning!" Love the Ralph Wiggum quote!

QOTD: Going to get a Champagne for Turkey day and attempt the knife cork pop! :)
  • Tom T.
Hey Gary, I am going to my sister's, will be with the whole fam, and I will definitely be bringing the vino (a Zin and some others).
  • Nice show, Gary.
    Good information.

QOTD. We don't know Thanksgiving over here.
  • Robin C
QOTD: Thanksgiving at home. White Burgandy probably. Very diverse palates amongst us. I'm gong to try to not make it too much of a carb fest. With leftovers we'll have pinot noir. Maybe the Rex Hill.
