‘I’m quite bored by it and I’m almost taking a nap.’

After a couple of bore draws this episode turns up a decisive and surprising winner of the head to head. Makes for a much better show.

Gary, you needed to do vintage neutral when doing a OR tasting. 08 and 07 couldn’t be different years and it really points out how much vintage variation there is in OR which is why people liken it to Burgundy.

  • First, a blind tasting between two different producers from two different vintages is so random as to be useless. Why not a horizontal tasting of two different vintages from the same producer? Why not a horizontal tasting of two different producers from the same vintage? Love your style, but this was just not a useful episode. I know you can do better, because you most often do.

Second, while Oregon was big as a Pinot area, the Willamette Valley in particular, the nation’s premier Pinot producing appellation for over a decade has been Sonoma County’s Russian River Valley.

    Just sayin’.

QOTD: The best Christmas gift I could get, would be to finally have the chance to meet you, Gary.
I’m starting to give up hope that you will ever make it to MN and I don’t know if I will ever be able to afford a trip out to the winelibrary. But Christmas is a time for miracles, so maybe one will happen.

Good episode and will look for the Evening Land in my area.

QOTD – Very few things I really need, lots that I want, and really need to strike a balance.

Great episode, Gary. Loved it…though you didn’t make our jobs any easier convincing folks that ’07 is not the crappy vintage everyone says it was. It was a rough one, but there are some true gems out there. Just gotta look.

Best Christmas gift I could get: A full time job in the wine industry that pays enough for me to not worry all the time about money.

  • Fun episode, Gary.

QOTD: I want a insanely high tolerance and metabolism so I can eat more, and drink more wine. I’m not asking Santa’s jolly, fat arse, as he’s obviously a hysterical, fat drunk. Got any suggestions?

2007 vintage in oregon was challenging, even for marquee wineries like beaux freres. 2008 much better, not surprised really.

Good episode! Enjoyed you did not re-taste the Beaux Freres after pulling out and seeing the bottle, stuck with your original blind taste.

QOTD: Time, for it lends us minutes and charges us years.

  • Evening Lands Vineyards is a project started by a guy from New York, Mark Tarlov. The Oregon Pinot comes from Seven Springs Vineyards, which previously had contracts with many higher-end wineries in the Willamette Valley, but was bought and those contracts were cancelled. So the source of the fruit is solid, and the consulting winemaker is Dominique Lafon from Burgandy.

Great show and a startling result. While I’ve never had the Beaux Freres, I’ve heard nothing but good stuff about their Pinots. Wow. I’ve never heard of Evening Land either.

QOTD: Peac, love, happiness and good health. What else is there?

eNever had either but love the format. It takes all the BS out of rating the wines. It is what it is.

I’ve had Beaux Freres numerous times and I’m shocked to see this result. I immediately ran to my rack to find out what vintages I have had in the past. I don’t think I’ve had the 07′ and can’t wait to taste it. I doubt I’ll find the other wine, but hope I do!

Not sure why people are so uppity about comparing the two different vintages. A head to head blind tasting is purely about which of the two wines is better. If anything Gary’s confirming what ya’ll are complaining about which is that ’07 was a bad year. So it would seem Beaux Freres shouldn’t pass off inferior ’07 juice to consumers at $45/btl when the market is saturated with higher quality, less expensive, competing ’06 and ’08 labels. At least that’s what reason dictates, but you can base your conclusions on what you please.
