QOTD: Ok, ready to post the Christmas Day wines I had. Lots of less-than-great juice at my parent’s house (couldn’t touch all the 2007 Cali Syrah and PN), but did open a Richardson 2002 Sangiacomo Vineyards PN from Sonoma that was pretty awesome. And while the present haul was good this year, no wine gifts, but flying will limit one’s gift-buyers’ options. Happy Holidays!

    Better late than never… QOTD:
Had some very serious reds over the holidays:
2006 Ornellaia from a magnum: way too young (duh!). Decanted 24h and showed tremendous backbone. In 15 years this will be a superstar supertuscan.
1997 Caymus Cab: has aged gracefully. The vanilla-oak component has mellowed in and now there is a nice balance b/w the stunning cassis and the wood. It is not over-concentrated and it is harder to tell the difference to a ripe Bordeaux.
2000 Luce: Still showing strong. Serious Amarena cherry. Is possibly already beyond its peak, though.
1999 Flora Springs Trilogy: Beautiful meritage. Medium bodied and a heavy redcurrant component that makes this one very enjoyable 10 years after harvest.

QOTD: Well, on Christmas Day, we had a 2001 Chateau Souvrain Cabernet Sauvignon that was very smooth. The next night we had a 1996 Jaboulet Hermitage Blanc which was rather interesting, but clearly past its prime. Still, a nice wine on the whole. On New Year’s Eve, we had a Spanish cava to start the meal with the shrimp and mango salsa amuse bouche (8 guests plus my wife and I), then we had a couple of bottles of a 2007 La Nerthe CDP Blanc which went very well with the veal involtini insalada first course. With the Beef Wellington main course, we had 2 magnums of 2000 Chateau La Tourette Pauillac Bordeaux which was wonderful and smooth as silk. With the cheese course and the tiramisu dessert, we had a couple of half bottles of a 1979 Gran Don PX Sherry. The raisiny taste went well with the dessert especially, although I’m not sure why. We toasted the New Year with a bottle of Roederer Estate NV Anderson Valley Sparkling Wine.

I was very blessed with Vino & Family this Christmas…

1997 Zind-Humbrecht Riesling Brand (France, Alsace, Turckheim, Alsace Grand Cru AOC) 12/25/2009 AMM3RD 95
This was a simply amazing bottle of wine. Nose of lime skin and lemon with a waxed fruit or waxy smell that was interesting. Color was very light golden honey colored. Very dense and coating the palate with fresh acidity and verve, that was captivating. More lemon and citrus on the palate. Balanced, Deep, Wonderful, wish I had more. Drinking perfectly right now, should drink well over the next 3 years. Will be looking for more dated Zind! Loved it! AMM (89 views)

2006 Domaine Serene Pinot Noir Evenstad Reserve (USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley) 12/25/2009 AMM3RD 93
This is a great Pinot! My perennial favorite, the ’06 is young but has balance and grace that will improve over time. Decanted for 1hr+. Nose of ripe fruit, that was explosive. Dark fruit and tons of spice, wonderful silky mouth feel. Drink over the next 5-10 years. Highly recommended, and can be considered a benchmark in the price range! AMM (261 views)

    2004 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou (France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien) 12/24/2009 AMM3RD 93
This wine was enjoyed on Christmas eve, before and during dinner, served from a Magnum. Dark garnet color and a ripe nose of dark fruits and earth. Bright fruit and spice on the palate that was balanced on a medium long finish that was clean with fresh tannins. Dark fruits like blackberrys and black currants. Drinking great now, will drink great for 5+ years. Recommended, but not a value IMO. (Wife (Kim) really liked it) (319 views)

    2005 Château Saint-Jean Châteauneuf-du-Pape (France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape) 12/25/2009 AMM3RD 91
Dark wonderful color, nose of earth and dark fruits. This has a nice spice, earth and red fruit balance. Fruit is still slightly sweet. Drinks great right now, will get better over the next 3-5 years. (56 views)

2005 Perrin & Fils Vacqueyras Les Christins (France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Vacqueyras) 12/25/2009 AMM3RD 91
One of my favorite value wines ever, for $18 this wine over delivers. Nice red color, nose of light red fruits. Balance consistency, and flavor. This wine has the full package and should be enjoyed over the next 3-5years…AMM (192 views)

  • A dumb Rhine king

QOTD: I had a Coppola Merlot and a 2005 Geyser Peak Cab, unfortunately I couldn’t do them any reviewing justice looking back over a week ago.
