line of the day (to Mott) – ‘what did you watch last night…and don’t lie’

A few too many ‘in-jokes’ for me to get too pumped about this episode and a disappointing wine didn’t help

QOTD: My favorite commenter is anyone who can give me some extra knowledge. I don't spend a huge amount of time in the comments because I'm pretty busy lately. When I have the time though, I always enjoy. Keep bringing thunder, Gary!

Sorry the last wine was so disappointing. Bummer. Guess I'm not vocal enough for shout-outs. Hmmm. After 828 epsodes of which I've left comments on over 800, maybe I should just hang it up as well.

  • Gary… dude… hush! Vouvray and other Loire Chenin is an affordable bonus. Lots of good wine – dry, sparkling, semi-dry, and sweet with big nose and excellent drinkability with or without food – and I rarely pay more than $20 a bottle. Don't blow it for us, friend.

QOTD: Dunno. Too many to read.

WOW Gary, what an episode, I am absolutely beside myself !!! I have been really trying to enjoy and understand wine for about a year now. I have been watching your show for about the same amount of time (my second post here). 6-8 months ago I went to a wine tasting and tried the most incredible white wine I have every had. I liked it so much, I went back and bought the rest of their stock.

Every time I drink this wine I think I should send you an email and see if I can send you a bottle to get your opinion. My gut just says you will like this wine. I am always curious what your comments would be.

Well my curiosity is now over. The wine I am talking about is the 2006 Francois Chidaine Montlouis Les Tuffeaux. I realize it is one vintage off, but you described exactly what I taste, and how the mouth feel and viscosity is.

Thanks for the show.I hope to post again soon.

  • Castello, cheers buddy, I suppose in a way it’s good that I can’t get into Winelibrary at work – makes me a little more productive…

Even though the second wine didn't bring any thunder It was still a good episode. When you said that it might be the most disappointed with a wine you've had made me think of Avatar being the Highest Grossing Movie of all time. It may be fact but its distorted. Avatar made more “money” but its not inflation adjusted. If we did that Gone with the Wind totally wipes the floor with other movies. Your making a judgment in a moment. WIth the memory of other epic disappointments slightly faded. The worst ever and the best ever make good TV but the superlatives get thrown around a hell of a lot nowadays in all walks of life.

QOD:? uh NY Pete i think if I can't include you. I don't read the comments all the time. Only when a QOD is really giving me a fit.

I don?t like band wagons, but I have to jump on GV's at this particular time. He often prefaces his ratings or scores with “what I do here is crazy” or something to that affect. I don?t believe he takes as much stock in his scores as we do, but your points are valid and for the most part I agree with you.

  • cellarrat5

This is what I get for missing a weeks worth of episodes, I am completely out of the running for best commenter! Oh well, I don?t think I had much of a chance anyway. I have gotten one shout out before though!! My 1 minute of fame has past like the single beat of a humming birds wings (violin music plays in the background as I slowly stroll into the sunset, kind of like the incredible hulk).

QOTD: NOT NY Pete or any of the “hardcore from womb to tomb” Vanyiacs. Anyone who is thought provoking or actually will engage in conversation as opposed to planting flags and bouncing; Time is money, but the best moments in life are spent when neither is a factor of the moment at hand.

  • pabernatchez

    Hey !
I think you're right… I know GV is sincere when he says he loves Chenin Blanc (he proved it many times, including live in Paris last December…), but one thing he didn't mention in the episode is that it is a grape varietal that can be very capricious, and that often needs a lot of air (and time !) to fully express (especially biodynamic CB, I think…). I'm sure this wine will evolve into something better !

  • thedumbphase

Dude, your office is a freakin' mess!
    QOTD-
Let's be honest here. There's Kahuna and then there's everyone else.

  • NY Pete

    yo rat, fwiw, it's Vayniacs.

  • cellarrat5

oh snap! My bad Pete, your right! Tail between my legs, but you will need to type in complete words, I am not hip to the interweb lingo.

  • marcfrontario

Graham beck gamekeeper 08' chenin. I wasn't sure whether my wife was going to drink it or make out with it. Looks like we have a keeper

Certainly that’s my gut feeling – I’ve had a moderate amount of experience with the Chidaine wines – and, in many ways, they almost remind me of Savennieres in their youth. I’m picking up a bottle for the cellar purely on the back of the relatively poor review…

  • Anonymous

    Thanks for the reply…
I also have one in the cellar that I think I’ll wait a little before opening.
Also bought a ’07 Clos du Breuil in Montlouis… Will have to see how this evolves too !

Savennières is great too, but far more austere in my opinion… You either love or hate its dryness : I belong to the first category !
    Best regards from Paris !

And likewise from Melbourne, The Land of Aus…

  • Chidaine is a very good producer. 07 is a weaker vintage for Vouvray IMO and the Loire is one place where vintages are quite diverse. That said, Loire Chenin will also shut down and three years from vintage is a point where I would be nervous. My guess is that this is probably just not as strong as the 06 and 05's though. Still at those prices, I am a potential buyer of a bottle or two. Nice show.

  • Catching up on some WLTV after a great vacation to Colombia. Had to cheat and start with this because I love the CB. Almost glad they didn't show well… 🙂

  • stevez65

Crazy, i just had the 2005 Francois Chidaine Montlouis Les Tuffeaux 2 days ago and loved it. Beautiful nose of honey, lemon peel. well balanced and integrated on the palate. a great value in my book.

  • jayhitek

    QOTD: Me!
    I think I'm hysterical.

  • alanfavell

Harsh and unfair. Here is a good reason why blind tastings are different. You dump on an 89 point wine because you hoped it would be a home run at 95. How unfair is that? If a wine is rubbish, then fair enough give it the boots but why dump on it so much just because it did not meet your blown up expectations. It is, even by your mark, still a good wine.
Chidaine is not a hack and does not make industrial wines. It is fair to say 07 is not as strong as other vintages but come on, he is still making darn good stuff.

  • murso

If, by “Haaaappy Person”, you mean CHOAD.

    Pancho = choad.

  • wesleymcallister

by far the best commenter on here.

  • DCaragher

GV – Love the Loire…sad to see some shocking results!

QOTD: I need to read the comments more!

  • Mike in C-town

I'm off the tracks a little with computer issues. Too bad there was not a good showing for the wines. I've not really ventured into the Loire and it would have been good to see what shines.

    QOTD: Mott, all time

  • Man you are making me wish I would have picked up a loire valley white, instead of going budget and getting this Chilean Chardonay. But who knows, I might love that $10 chard? 🙂

QOTD: I am not sure about thunder bringing poster here. I dont read the comments as much, but it seems I see NY Pete on here a lot. I will also vote for Mott!! Why not!! 🙂

Has a Loire Valley Chenin Blanc ever been offered on Cindy?

  • Rick

Look at Dry Creek Vinyard's Winemaker Comments:
The 2008 Chenin Blanc is our first vintage in a screw cap and with a vineyard designation. At first swirl, inviting aromas of citrus, peach and tropical fruit leap from the glass. On the palate, the wine is simply refreshing and delicious, following the tropical fruit theme while displaying excellent acidity. This Chenin Blanc is balanced from start to finish and is the perfect aperitif wine.

  • John Trombley

Again, picking up an episode later.

There is one thing worth mentioning about Loire chenins, dry and sweet. The melon act that comes out in the fruit is not my favorite thing, but these wines age famously, for the most part, and the melon goes away to be replaced by a terrific je-ne-sais-quoi (if you know what I mean.)

Classic match–salmon or other anadromous fish of the trout category.

My favorite shout out, but Chenin? No doubt. Hoo ay. (Huet), try a Cuvee Constance sometime. The 1995 is heaven. Blows your average classed Sauternes out of the water, and even many vintages of Yquem at half the price. Keep an eye on anything from Baumard, Quarts de Chaume if you can afford, the lesser bottlings if you can't, Savennières if you like 'um dry.

Apparently there's been some premox problems with Loire Chenins, too, so watch out for that.

  • Had a 02 Domaine des Baumard Savennières Clos du Papillon last night so I thought I’d check this out. Love summertime Chenin!

QotD: Randi – for two obvious reasons!

  • Think you need to tidy up a bit 🙂
