Quick point in reference to Gary finding tea in recent wines…

In cigar tasting, I always have found that, the last thing on your mind or what you have been interested in lately, overpowers the rest of your tastebuds. Just my opinion. I now it happens to me.

  • charlzee

Might be one your the best guests you have ever had. Honesty is indeed the best policy. can't wait for episode 2.

  • Lb_in_KS

Dang! I really like this guy and his take on wine….if all you remember at the end of the night is POP, that wine must of sucked.
Looked for GV on the ESPN last night…a no show?

  • barrethudson

Great show! Can't wait for part two. Brian I love you, your take on wine is right on, wine for consumers by consumers. Haven't had your stuff but will definitely try to check it out! Gary if your gonna bring guests like Brian on keep it up man, he rocks! The wine world needs more of his, lets just drink some delicious stuff and stop getting hung up on the cork or the this and the that, attitude!

  • cellarrat5

A LOT of content in this episode. Making wine (and buying it) to for consumers drink it!!!?? What a concept 😉 Brian, you have the potential to be one of the better and more popular guests that I have seen thus far. LOVE the attitude of this winemaker.

    QOTD: Bradley Nowell

  • Mine too! Sorry for stepping all over you, Gary. But we were talking about all my hot button topics. 🙂

  • I almost commented on the Toddy nickname when he said it. But all I could think was Hot Toddy… and that would have been embarassing for both of us 😉

  • Monkeyron

Gary! great Show! Great Guest Brian! I love Brian's outlook and honesty in the Biz. I hope soon to Follow up with our own in the same Honest Profile as Brain has. I know, another California Wine. Brian not liking his fruits and Veggies? Not good for long term Health.

I will say, even though after watching this I am interested in trying his wines, his packaging turns me off. I have seen his wines in stores, and they just turn me off. I dont like screw caps, and the label just seems weird to me. I know, I know the packaging doesnt matter, but its kind of like food, the way the food looks makes a difference. He does seem like a very nice guy and it sounds like his wines are solid. I am not sure I agree with his comments about aging wine either, I enjoy keeping wine in my cellar for several years. I dont think Bordeaux has to be 25 years old to drink, like some people, but I like keeping the bottles for 5 or 6 years (maybe more). I do think it is strange that sometimes it seems that the higher rated a wine is, the longer it needs to be in the cellar (but I understand the potential complexity and quality factor). Overall a very interesting show, with a great guest. I like his frankness and passion for what he does.

  • Globex

Fantastic guest making for a fantastic episode. Deliciousness!!! Made me thirst for some Pinot Noir while watching.

  • Thanks for the comments.

I understand that the labels are… well… weird. But that was intentional because we were trying to create something different; non-traditional. And I wanted the labels to reflect that. The last thing I wanted was someone who loved old-school Burgundy to buy the wine thinking that's what was in the bottle.

I didn't mean to imply that there's no place for aged wines. I get caught up in hyperbole sometimes 🙂 But I also feel that the focus often gets scewed towards againg when many (if not most) of the wine produced doesn't age well. Of course Bordeaux is a prime example of wines that can age well. And I've had a lot of great, older Bdx. But I've had my fair share of bad, dead wines as well.

I guess my main point is that people shouldn't let wine “die”. At whatever point you think it's ready to drink – drink it without any regret!

  • collegefootballisnumberone

And speaking of the labels…did anyone else notice that GV was wearing the Loring colors? It was almost like a uniform. What a match between the shirt and labels. Look out Jets, he's changing his colors!

Love these wines, specifically Garys' Vineyard (there are two Gary's).

    Bring on part two.

  • corkscrew

Just watched again, one of the best guests, no BS, sincere, knows his trade and has passion for it. Looking foward to Part Deux. http://www.winelx.com

Fantastic episode, love the guest spots, love the info, looking forward to part II. Someone wrote QOTD: JSBach–I'm a musician, so that was what first entered my head, too.

    hey hey … where's part 2?

  • Randall

Right on, notTheFalseD!! Truly an underrated master for a century or two. Your comment on J.S. was justin time!! (Apologies all around) 🙂

  • Randall

Don’t know, but I just opened an ’04 Pinot a couple of nights ago and I was SOOOOO glad I did… Just fanfreakintabulous!! Caught it just as it was cresting on top of the hill…

  • Mad Hatter

    Gary,

I have to say, I usually hate your guest episodes-however, Brian was amazing! He is passionate, down to earth and not “selly” on the show. Great job getting him on!

  • Hey Gary, we're still here and doing well. Little bit more of a niche than we used to be but frankly, that is a good thing that is a lot easier to manage. We still have a lot of the old crowd and some very seasoned palates. Also, as you get older and wiser about wine, it is a nice thing to have people around who really know what they like and why, without a bunch of attitude or offensive opinions.

As an aside, I remember when Brian started posting and he approached it with perfection, to the point when other winemakers would ask me how to navigate the treacherous online wine communities, I would tell them to watch Brian for a week or two, talk about what they think about the wine world and just wait for people to ask them questions.

Don't forget about us, we're still rockin'!!

  • DAveAll

    GR8 Guest.

  • CharlieTN

Great guest, seems very real. How does he not eat fruits and vegetables though? How does he not get scurvy or something?

side QOTD–who's a musical artist who didn't get popular until after death–Mozart!

  • Randall

Great call on the Mozart… in the Classical realm we could add Schubert, J. S. Bach, Vivaldi…

  • Randall

Would Harry Chapin qualify also? Just wondering…

  • amoril

This is probably one of the best episodes I've seen. I'd love to get into the wine business and Brian just made me that more excited. Thanks Gary for having him on.

  • pian0_player

Thank you for taking the time to reply. You are absolutely right, most wines really dont benefit from aging too long. I actually think people even drink Bordeaux too old sometimes. Wine should be enjoyed when it is at its peak, and that is a relative term depending on the palate.

As far as the label is concerned, I guess Im just drawn to traditional looking labels. I have learned that the label on the outside is less important than the wine on the inside (which painfully I learned by opening a 1994 Chateau Latour, which although solid, was way overpriced). I am not such a traditionalist that I believe that all wine should be made in the french style, in fact I think CA wines are better when the embrace the natural terroir of CA. I will say I am intrigued with you and your wines. I will definitely be trying one of your wines soon. They are fairly priced, and I get the feeling they are quite lovely. I will let you know what I think. Thanks!

    Yo Brian & G , SUUUUUUUUUUUUUPEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRR EPISODE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    LOOOOOOKIIIIIIIIIIIIIIN' FOWARD TA PART DEUX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • YoungDave

SWEEEET EP. so far!! Lots of interesting “inside” (forgive the air quotes) wine info here, especially with the alcohol percentage posting on the label- GREAT topic for discussion. I can't wait to watch part 2… and since I am 1 day behind, is coming up RIGHT NOW!!

  • A dumb Rhein king

    Brian is legit.

    SQOTD: Bach.

  • plcb

PA sells at least 10 different Loring Wine Company 2006 pinot noirs. My store has 6 of them, Brosseau, Cargasacchi, Clos Pepe, Graham Family, Keefer Ranch, Rosella. All 40.99 + tax

  • payson07

Great guest. Brian seems like a great guy with a great attitude. The world needs more winemakers like him making good wine for people to enjoy. Even though I'm a bit guilty of hanging on to a few bottles that I'm excited to open & will be sad when they're gone, but isn't that the point?

QOTD: Johnny Cash? Even though he was obviously popular while he was alive, I feel like he's appreciated more now. Also, Jeff Buckley.

  • notTheFalseD

What's most interesting is that he would probably think we were all nuts to be playing his music now, almost 300 years later. Maybe that's the same point Brian was making about enjoying wines now rather than saving them until the end of time… In Bach's case though, his music has definitely gotten better with age, IMHO. As more and more composers after him wrote more and more drek (relatively speaking) his music would only grow in stature.

  • PearlGirlWhirl

Yes, in the latter part of the Baroque Era audiences wanted newly composed music every week, didn't want nor cared to hear music from the past–very much unlike the 20th & 21st centuries–speaking in huge generalities, of course; there is a small audience for new music today.

  • murso

    Thanks, Brian! Great, GREAT episode.

  • gman802

Fun show, I like the business talk. Maybe I'm wrong, but gary havent you beeen critical of this type of Pinot in the past?

  • Great guest!
A little frustrating watching you guys taste without any mention of where the grapes are from.
California? Santa Ynez? Santa Barbara? Santa Claus? Mars? Santa Claus Conquers The Martians?
    Don't think you ever said.
    On to part 2….

  • John_Kenneth_J

It does seem like there's been a lot of guests on this year, but Brian has been great. Looking forward to part 2

  • R M Kriete

    Great guest!

  • Very entertaining…did I see Gary make a certain gesture when he said “Big, BIG!” near the beginning? Laughed when Brian said that about vegetables and fruit…me the same 🙂
