Another classic episode.

GV went into his shell a bit when Kermit said he thought some critics go way over the top with their descriptions such as ‘tastes like lime, but specifically the lime rind, not the rest of the lime’. As we know that’s exactly the way GV tastes! But great to get a different and equally valid take on the whole tasting process. I like them both

    Saaaaweet!

A fine part II. Although, I must say that I'm not really on board w/Kermit's assessment of the Rhone's value in comparison to other regions. Wine, in general, needs a correction and brought back down to reality. I'm a firm believer that at the end of the day it's really just fermented grape juice and is a one bottle really worth 100's of dollars more than another? The high price of wine only makes it unable to be experienced by many. Is that what is really needed in the wine world, guys?

  • jasonhawksworth

Love the way he doesn't “care” about what you get on the nose as apposed to the pallet. Just when I thought I knew a little more, I get knocked the eff out! Monster episode. Can't wait for #3

  • Great show, Kermit comes accross at a great person, not just his knowledge of wine but we could listen to his stories all day.

  • everyone has their own palate 😉

  • Agreed 🙂

  • great point

  • Thnx KV 🙂

  • thank u 🙂 DRK ur presence always makes me smile! thnx for commenting!

  • AHHAHAHhahahahaha!

  • I am developing 🙂 like wine, from a punk kid who didnt let peeps talk …..

  • A go go bar? now that would be CLASSIC!

  • bobwied

Great job letting Kermit talk. He's got some very interesting things to say. Can't wait for the first #3.

  • Ellen thank u for doing that and enjoying it, I will work on making more shows like that 🙂

  • This is so interesting! I am desperately waiting for part 3 – Post it faster Gary!

  • Like the rest of the Vaynernation, I LOVED these two eps. Probably my favorite guest show. The stories, the malo-talk, and his own tasting method were all fascinating to hear. BTW, I also had the same experience with the Italian reds at some fancier places.

Question of the Ep: I like hearing a few descriptions, as I can determine whether or not I want to pick it up in a store, online, or even in a restaurant. Too much breakdown? Well, we do all have our own noses/palettes. My wife and I differ constantly to that end.

What a “nice” dude. Clearly he's got his own palate and goes with it completely when selecting and blending wines. I've never bought wine based on the importer, but that's gonna change immediately.

  • Phredd3

I don't know if it is because of your respect for the man, or what, but nice interview job, Gary. Fewer interruptions than most past episodes, and you are asking good questions and letting him answer them in his own way. I'm really digging this. Can't wait for tomorrow.

The Mottster was right, this is huge. Props to you both.

  • ooh baby…finally home. starting the download, and will go finish barn chores.

  • theDude

This is also a good show. I liked it very much. More please.

  • binarycache

Another great show! I like that the guest is leading you to ask the questions. Don't get me wrong you are asking great followup questions! Bravo to both of you!!!!

  • pawncop

Wow!!! A three parter! Looking forward to tomorrow, sir's. Great information and insight into the process. I love it.

Ok, I haven't been watching for a while and Gary sent an email out to people like me saying to tune back in and it would be worth it. He was right. KL is a legend, an interesting personality, a great guest and it is fascinating to hear from a top importer who knows a lot about wine and how it is made, but is also a business man with his own taste preferences, professional jealousies, history, etc. (kinda like GV).

There was a more than a little valid dissing of importers such as or similar to Dan Philips, Eric Solomon, Jorge Ordonez and Bobby Kacher. It would be great to have some of them on the show as a contrast (maybe GV already has).

A truly nice guy. Fascinating life experiences and great down to earth gentleman. Probably my favorite episodes so far. I usually don't watch WLTV episodes more than once, but I know I will come back to this one and have at least another go-round.

  • I totally believe that you could take a day long visit with a key person like this, and deliver (with Mott's help of course) a couple of weeks worth of episodes. For anyone who is into wine beyond the buzz, this kind of exposure is fascinating. Thanks again for the great guests.

  • SECONDED!

kermit is cool! don't get jealous gary, you rock too!!

  • Kevin76

Great episode. Love the decanters and the topics raised.

  • The first ever WLTV trilogy.

  • I got that email as well and I have been watching every day since '06

  • epargrevol

But did you not comment for long time? Or maybe you have not bought anything for some time? I am sure they can run analytics on all the web contact and have a method to their madness.

Potential for the best all time guest in this episode. Sadly, every time Kermit started explain something useful — his approach to finding new smaller wineries (who cares about the Chablis-oyster cliche), looking down from the hillside and the effect of heat and altitude on the acid …etc. — Gary saw fit to interrupt him mid-stream and then proceed to push onward with additional questions unrelated to the original discussion point. Very very very very very very very very annoying! Almost to the point where I just want to shut-off the episode and give up. In truth, there nothing I would rather watch and consume on the web than in depth interviews of wine legends like Kermit (and the many others that have appeared on the show). I would probably pay to see a version where they are allowed to run the course of an interview uninterrupted [in making their points] and without any concern for time limits. I completely agree keeping the show time down for the regular solo shows is great and fine, but with these types of interviews, let them run the hours long, and I'll eat it up with a grin. All that complaining wrote, I do want to thank GV for the opportunity to here from someone like Kermit. For me, it's a blessing.

Gary…like listening to 2 Einsteins discuss physics! You guys rock! 95% going over my head..but the 5% I'm catching is awesome!! thanks for yet another fantasic episode! Used to post more frequently….have become a lurker! Life goes by in a blur!! 🙂

  • Randall

Preach it, scottEJ, preach it!!!! :0

  • iwalkthevine

Love the old rockers who get into wine! Gary – still waiting for you to wear my guitar “I walk the Vine” tee I gave you in Portland!

  • geoffmace

Kermit is an inspiration to anyone rolling the dice and switching careers into the wine biz. Gary, thanks for this.

  • I have much appreciation for what Kermit has done for the wine industry in CA. His 07 cotes du rhone red is one of my favorites. However, I don't feel the CA wine industry turned its back on him completely. I just had the Renaissance 1997 Vin de terroir cab sauv. and it would be right up his alley. Only 12.5% alc but with ripe fruit, serious depth and length, a beauty and a memorable wine. If he were to carry CA wines (and there are many) that suit his taste I'd visit his shop in Berkeley more regularly.

  • this is great…we have a friend who is in Puligny Montrachet right now at L'Ecole du Vin et des Terroirs doing a workshop. My biz partner is just back in Burgundy in Fontaines, about 15 minutes from there, and they are going to try and hook up.

  • get in there Mott! right on!

  • Pat__B

During intermission between Part II and Part III I am going to see if I can dig up my beret….

  • the human nose can only do a few aromas before it is overwhelmed…that said, I can't give up on the aromatics. Some wines have them and others do not…young whites can be just awesome. We've got a Vignoles/NY 76 blend from 2009 that just explodes out of the glass, with bosc pear, green apple, and something that no one can agree on…does not translate to the palate until the end, which is almost chalky…could be the limestone soils.

  • Thursday

I hope you had the opportunity to take K.L. out to dinner after this interview… just as a viewer I don't want this interaction to end. He seems like such a nice man. Good times.

  • orangebottle

Gary can we kidnap Kermit and keep him in WLTV? He is so genuine and funny. There is so much to learn from him. I love these types of shows. His reaction to you was priceless. I agree with Kermit on the no filter wines. I thought no filter wine had a lot more going on. This is the best ever. I can?t wait for part 3.

  • KL is probably my favorite WLTV guest to date! Looking very forward to part 3.

  • Great Part 2…thanks so much.

  • I was hoping that Kermit would consider me for adoption…

  • Thnx Naysen I am sorry to let u down in spots 🙁

  • Yup!
