QOTD: watched this sunday morning so I've already had something to drink this weekend… tried a bottle of Steen after seeing it on the show. It was only $9 but probably worth a buck or two less. Very one dimensional flavor profile. It tasted like crisp spring water with some of that lemon juice that comes in the little lemon shaped bottle used for flavoring. We bought a bottle of Goats Do Roam (also from SA) and that may get cracked open tonight to complete the weekend trip to SA for under $20 in total.

so far a couple caipirinhas and a bottle of “saldo” from orin swift.

2008 Tarapacá +plus Red Blend from Maipo Valley, Chile. Organic.

37% Syrah, 26% Carmenére, 23% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot.

I quite like it. It sits well with some BBQ.. ; )
    It's kinda monster-like. Big. 14,5% vol.
I think it's best enjoyed with big foods.
    FRUIT BOMB ALERT!!
    Salud!

wonderful show, i just love this wine nerd kinda stuff.
never had a vin jaune coz i just can't afford it right now. In Brasil it's like $200,$250 dollars.

QOTD – I just got back from Italy and was drinking wine this weekend. Unfortunately it was box red/white wine on Delta today, but the rest of the weekend was good. For dessert on Friday I had a Recioto, which I had never had or heard of before. It was sweet and delicious and went well with dessert. With dinner I had a dolcetto, which was earthy and good. I am glad to be back to catch up on episodes I missed during the last 10 days.

QOTD II: Sorry to disappoint pros like cellarrat5, but somebody turned me on to a couple of bottles of Woodbridge Portacinco '98 from Lodi… Touriga, Trousseau, Alvarelhao, Souzao & Tinta Cao (19% abv) and we could only wait so long…
Hot at first but not too bad after it breathes!! (for Woodbridge). Have had better, have had worse…
    p.s. CA State Fair beer judging is FINITO!! I;^}

For a second there I misread that as ?wine library spanish?. I had this mental image of some poor Spanish translator trying to match his voice to Gary?s excited image.

first off, so happy to see some wine from the jura appear on the show. have lived in france they are so under the radar there to. in the states, maybe 5 % of wine drinkers have had some. they go great with fondue, roasted chicken, dried meats and even some deserts. most people in france do not like them either. you are right, they are not friendly and surely not elegant. BUT, there is a place for them. in terms of price, they are not cheap. that bottle would be about 35 euros in Fr. Though, there are other wines that come from the appellation that are not as oxidised and are more friendly AND cheaper. they run about 10 euros or so.
anyhow, people need to check these wines out!!!!
    great choice gary!

HA! Next to Duvel, I think Gulden Draak is my favorite! Awesome Belgian style blond, amazing head!! And I loves me some head on my Golden Belgian blonds!! (What?! it actually works without being derogatory!)

For someone who believes they have such a firm grasp on etiquette and the illusive knowledge of the wine world it seems as if your run on sentences are a microcosm of your ignorance. Yes, “each to their own” is indeed the butchered colloquialism that applies here. Gary needs to work on expressing himself a little better? Anybody that wants some knowledge can contact me? Have Spanish wines become a “hit” in the States yet? There are not enough adjectives in the world to describe your pompous, arrogant and downright atrocious attitude/demeanor. You are the reason that wine is looked upon by a good portion of individuals as inaccessible. In many cases you are the reason why so many people on this blog post everyday, and why Gary continues doing this show. So in some sick twisted way I would like to thank you while simultaneously damning your very existence on this earth.

When you nerd it up so hard that you do a style of wine that I've never heard of, that's some serious nerding. Respect.

QOTD: It's Monday here in Oz by the time I've gotten around to this, but I'm currently drinking a Deutz Marlborough Cuvee Blanc de Blancs. This is a New Zealand sparkling white, 100% chardonnay of course. It's a relative cheapie (probably about $20 US) but I'm enjoying it. Subtle cream and bread notes on the nose, then lots of pure bright fruit on the palate, and most importantly boatloads of great acid. Sparkling wines need acid.

Just had a LAUS FLOR DE CHARDONNAY from Somontano Spain, really incredible stuff

  • Randall

    😀 !!

  • The Unknown Chef

Gary, I know you just did a show with Toby Hill however, wondering if you also tasted his extremely round, smooth Chardonnay? At first, I thought I would miss the varietally characteristic acid but, not true. I'm liking it.

So is anyone going to the Toast of the Town tonight at Lincoln Center? I'm looking to meet up with some Vayniaks!

  • cellarrat5

Hey if it tasted good go for it! Sounds like a decent blend, wonder which grower they got it from. Considering its age I probably dont know him/her.

  • cellarrat5

Little slow on the reply this weekend was insane. Nice show, couch with a Mott sighting FUC**NG awesome!

QOTD: Went to Cooking For Solutions on Friday. 7:30-10:30 dinner event at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, I imagine many of you would have enjoyed this event. Over 40 Gourmet restaurants (all sustainably grown and farmed food, including all the wine) and about 45 selected wineries. Eating a ton of amazing food and some fairly good wine while watching jelly fish and all manner of aquatic life floating around= amazing night. Oh and my friend brought me a case of Sierra Nevada when I got back, rough weekend for the liver.

  • cellarrat5

Like your style man! Keep up the posting and drinking good vino/other beverages.

  • waynooo

Yo G, Ya gotta have the Mottster do a side-by-side Tasting with Ya one of these
    days…………

  • Really good show. I wish bottles like that weren't so costly so I could experience them. Oh well, soon enough. 😉

QOTD: Met up at a co-worker's house to taste tons of different bubbles and fortifieds… really cool stuff. Had a fortified Malbec from Argentina that was really interesting. Charles H Brut Reserve was TASTY! Lots of crazy fun stuff.

    The natives are getting restless.

  • Hey, Gary! I don't know if it's the obscure subject or you're falling into the same sloppy pronunciations of places, producers and grapes. At least try to be consistent, pick even a wrong pronunciation and stick with it. This time Savagnin sounded first like Sauvignon and then like Semillon. Come on! Otherwise the education factor goes away if people can't even learn how to say it/talk about it!

QTOD. Drank a lot of different stuff. Mostly white as it's getting warm here in SoFla and my AC unit went this weekend. 🙁 The best was probably an 2004 Domaine Laflaive Macon-Verzé from their inaugural vintage in the Macon.

  • QOTD – Since I am not stating this until after the weekend, I DID drink a 2003 Prager Reisling, which was quite tasty with tons of mineral and a Murphy's Law '07 Rose. Both surprised friends that prefer non sweet wines, so hopefully we opened up some horizons.

Warmth is back (90 in Chicago) time to take advantage of the summertime wines. Enjoy!
