I’d encourage you to hunt down the 07 … it’s more reminiscent of the ’02 than the more powerful, fruit forward 05 and 06. I’ve been a fan of just about every release since 99, though, so I’m probably not the most impartial judge.

The first time I visited the castle I didn’t care too much for the wines. Last year I returned and enjoyed their offerings a bit more (I think I still have a bottle at home). Maybe I wasn’t in teh right frame of mind the first time. I stopped going to Sattui and dropped out of their wine club when his son took over and turned the place into even more of a tourist stop.
FYI, don’t try taking the castle tour on your own. My friends and I snuck past the velvet rope when no one was looking and almost got lost in the maze of rooms underneath the castle. There’s nothing quite like wandering aimlessly through a neverending maze of wine barrels and then stumbling into a torture chamber.

  • Have had that 85 BV three times over the last year, and it’s still drinking well.

  • That Ovid is solid. Doesn’t get the respect it should from a lot of reviewers IMO.

  • I’ve never tried the 1996. I do like 1996 California Cabernets though. The only one I had recently was the 96 Opus which was awesome. It made me finally like Opus.

  • I’ll check it out when it hits the shelves in town. They’re still on 06 here.

  • Guess you can’t complain if you get it for free. If you get a chance to try the 92 Bosche, definitely do, your wife might even like it.

  • Allan

I’ll put my head in a glass. End of story. Cheers Frank

That’s like a million light years ago. We wanna know what’s going on at the present time, are they all bad? Cheers you sweet swede 😛

It is pretty expensive now at $45 per bottle or 500+ per case

Haven’t been drinking Cab lately, delving in to other areas. All time? I had a ’93 Caymus that was, to my nose and palate, superb.

yes, always a great time! Their Descanso Beach Club allows us to bring our own steaks/food and wine/drink. They provide the giant bbq & all the fixins (plus liquor license that extends into the water!!). Always a fun group standing around the bbq while we cook & drink, and typically many of us share what we brought making for amazing summer evenings.

A cab that is inexpensive that I have been enjoying atm is RH Phillips Cab Sauv.
My guilty pleasure Cab of all time is the Silver Oak Napa…. I must have had a great time when I popped the first bottle, because every time I drink this wine I am filled with joy.

  • NY Pete

    great idea Allan …
    bring back the couch!

  • NY Pete

    btw … fwiw …
Paul Grieco was a most excellent guest last night!
    keep bringing the thunder GV
    that is all

Their 01 Merlot was awesome but out of 6 I think 3 were either cooked or otherwise over the hill. The three good ones were awesome. They replaced with newer vintages. A little overpriced but some good Cabs.
I’d love to get lost in the basement.

I recently had the Geyser Peak 06 Alexander Valley Cab. A great deal for $13.99 on sale. I also like Icaria Creek which is a tiny producer also in Alexander Valley.

Gotcha. That was a good one.
    Have a nice looooooong weekend.

Good episode, will try the Chateau St. Jean for certain.

QOTD – Alexander Valley Vineyards 2007. Very nice for $14.00.

  • Rizz70nd

I’m really loving the Darioush 2006 Signature Cabernet as well as the 2007 Black Stallion

  • Ninety-Three points and eighty bucks, guess it’s something to find and try for the journal.

QOTD: my favorite Cabernet of the moment is “Marqués De Casa Concha” 2006, 2008.
    all time, hmm…. none yet.

QOTD: TODAY: (*best bang for buck) *2006 Obsidian Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon ($28)
QOTD: ALL TIME: Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1985 because it was my birth year, and I was given the opportunity to share this with a great friend and former chef of the restaurant where I was working at the time. This was the first time I tasted an aged, world-class Bordeaux, and the unique flavors stuck are stuck in my brain to this day…I also saved the bottle.

OK here’s my Friday Temucula Valley Wine Tasting Follow up. I went to Thorton Tried no Cabs today.
I went to Weines (WEEENS) and tried their 07 Cabernet Savignon-It was good but not great.
Then I tried their 08 Refugio Cabernet Savignon! It was fantastic. Then I was told they won so many awards with this wine. Glad I got to try it. But at $59.00 a Bottle, I’m a bit too cheap today.

    good show.

    Cupcake

    thanks.

  • DaveAll

Good for you, we need more wine makers!

QOTD… Old… 1971 Lynch Bages, a perfectly stored syrup of cherries, woodsmoke and leather. New …. 2004 Opus One, tasted like a black fruit cloud that just dissappeared from the glass. REALLY benefitted from a 1 day double decant.

  • 🙂 OK let’s gnag Gary into another bag in box show. Prestige winemakers who bowed to the pressure of 3 litres plastig bags and wine with no ability to age— oops I sound like a wine snob… well maybe I am

  • no problems, I do have time to save some more , before, right?

  • Docjohn9

    Great Show
    The Lynfred Winery 1999 Cab.

    Thanks

  • RobinC

QOTD: Favorite: Ridge Montebello and Mas La Plana. I’m not drinking that many Cabs during the summer, but I do rememer the Silverado Vineyards Stags Leap District SOLO 2004 very fondly from a few weeks ago.

I find cabernet to be reliably good even at lower price points. It may not always be spectacular, but it seems to be hard to completely screw up. QOTD – I still remember the first good red wine I tried. It was a 1980 or 1981 Clos du Val Napa Cabernet (too long ago to remember exactly which vintage). I was in California on business and someone said we should try it with dinner. Before then I did not like red wine and it changed my mind. I have been drinking red wine ever since.

  • My favorite cabernet now is 2007 Robert Craig Affinity. A great wine at a reasonable Napa price.
All time is to tough to say for just one I will have to think about that. I enjoy your shows and have been watching for a long time. Keep it going. Go Jets and go Gators.

QOTD: Not sure about the greatest but I do enjoy the Torres Mas la Plana

  • Looking forward to trying the Chateau St. Jeans. I do love Provenance Merlot…maybe I’ll should try the cab, too.

  • Marinolman11

favorite in the last two years and I’ve tasted dozens and dozens of 50 dollar plus cabs, was an ’05 Ch. ste. Michelle cold creek. Singing like it was in the opera.

QOTD: Is it possible to even choose? No way to pick an all-time favorite but current top-tier choices are Chateau du Petit Thouars 2006 and 2008 (100% Cabernet Franc); Rouge Prestige from Domaine Brescou; and Cabernet Sauvignon from Domaine Mas Rous.
