line of the day – ‘It’s a bit like being the prettiest girl at an ugly school.’

Pretty average show because of the average wines. Most notable for Mott’s crazy move at the end (9.40)

Fun little show, Gary. You hit a couple of HRs there, with the $17 and then the “unusual place”.

    QOTD: Home.

  • QOTD: I think of a trip I took out there for work about 10 years ago, and I think of white wines.

  • How about a $10 bottle of Prosecco for me just for playing and being adorable? ;P

    Gary:
I have to give you a big shout out for the brown bag episodes. They are really fun to watch and, I must say, you are an amazing person/amazing character/extremely entertaining to stage the shows. I have said it in the past, and just thought now may be the time to repeat it, much thanks to you and the staff for continually putting on these great episodes.

QTD – Long Island … for whatever reason I think money/expensiveness. I don’t know why, I have never been there and the only basis for saying such is probably a Wine Spec. article or two on the area. However, that’s my initial feeling … money/expensiveness.

I thought it was a very good show. Not every show has to have great wines in it. That’s not what the wine world is, there are MANY OK ones out there. I would NEVER pay $16 for Long Island, CT, NY or PA wine! Yes, I’m from Long Island, so QOTD:

Long Island is: Too many bad things to list and only two good things, Access to the Atlantic Ocean and NYC!

  • Allan

I have only one thing to say: COUCH! πŸ˜›

I absolutely love the blind tasting episodes! I wonder if the scores would be different if you knew what you were tasting… is it possible to test?….maybe one day K Murph could do a brown paper bag episode of wines you’ve tasted on the show before?

QOTD: LangΓΈy (= Long Island in Norwegian) off the south-east coast of Norway.

  • LurkerKing

    Adorable indeed.

  • LurkerKing

How can you be me, if I’m already me?

QOTD: When you say “Long Island,” I say “STRONG ISLAND!”

    Those airports are a nightmare.

I love the brown bag shows. And this show was nice despite the fact that the wines were not of the same level.

Lurkers are supposed to lurk πŸ™‚

  • Like the bags.

    Long Island…..Longuyland

  • Andy

I’ve thought that would be interesting, too. Though any differences might be explained away by “changing palates’ and any number of other variables. But it would still be interesting to see how close the ratings would be a second time around in a blind tasting.

I also wonder how much the other wines come into play when scores are given. Would a wine that gets an 87 get a 90 if tasted alongside a less exciting one? Would be interesting…

  • QOTD: Iced Tea.. Tea Leaves… Fall Leaves… Fall Football… New England Patriots… Win Win Win!

  • QFG(Question for Gary): Word association… Juicy.

Car broken into on Long Island in Yonkers. Always like the brown bags. Sometimes they are hohum. This one was. I have never been a fan of Catena Chardonnay. Always find them too thin for my taste.

QOTD: You say Long Island, I say “No, not LONG Island, I said I grew up in RHODE Island! It’s a STATE, ya know?!”

  • QOTD: Ice tea

  • Mark McNabb

Gary…Why are you hating on California wine…I guess you knew it blow everything away.

A bit OT but WE have loved Rafanelli Zin. WE went to Detroit for almost a week and I had opened a bottle of 2002 before we left… and when we came back PENCIL SHARPENER!. I’m pretty sure I have heard you use that description but wow, it was like sticking your tong in a bunch of pencil shavings.

OK Long Island… Wine does not come to mind. But Detroit was a fantastic place and I was totally blown away. It has it’s problems but LOTS of good food, LOTS of good coffee. Just surprisingly better than the rep. So that may be the Long Island connection.

  • Dladyfield

QOTD: Pindar Vineyards and potato fields.

My husband is from Long Island and he has lots of interesting relatives still there. Fun place to visit, always great (esp. Italian) food. We hit some wineries the last time we were out and I wasn’t impressed. But that wouldn’t prevent us from going again when we’re out there πŸ™‚

I don’t have a lot of ideas about Long Island other than there are some good golf courses there that I have not played.

What was that at the end? Mott losing it? Very meh show, but not GV’s fault. The wines brought no thunder.

QOTD: Long Island – Ice Tea? Hey, that drink is pretty good.

  • Napa Wine all the way

  • konatbone

great show GV..!! Love the paperbag action.. Would love to see you get another bigtime wine guy on your show and surprise him with a paperbag tasting

Long Island: I always think of my first taxi ride into Manhattan from JFK. It was after a redeye, and was a warm July sunrise… I lost my mind seeing the massive skyline of concrete and skyscrapers

  • LongIslandJim

    Yeah….Yonkers is NOT Long Island.

    Gary,

I love the brown bags shows, keep doing them please. Your commentary in this episode was hilarious, I burst out laughing at work today watching; twice.

  • Don Simpson

I enjoy the Catena Malbec but have not tried their other wines.

    QOTD: Got nothing.

  • John__J

qotd: Iced Tea. (I’m sure a bunch of people had that answer too.)

LOVE LOVE LOVE the brown paper bags. I have a huge request. One that is a little dangerous. I have all the confidence in the world for my man Gary V. though so here it goes. Have you guys thought about putting a ringer into the brown paper bag mix. What I mean is throwing in a different but similar varietal to the tastings? If you know you are going to do a weeks worth of B.B. tastings say you’ll do one for the week. I have been reading Maureen Christian Petrosky’s A Month-by-Month Guide to Learning About Wine with Friends. She recommends ringers. You could even throw in an outrageously cheap bottle into the mix instead. Say 2 buck Chuck, or like an Aldi’s Winking Owl bottle instead of a different varietal. I tried the Winking Owl Shiraz yesterday and thought yep that tastes like a 3 dollar wine. Thought I’d throw it out there. G.V. you are my hero man! Working on my blog. My goal is still to be asked on as a guest. Keep up the spectacular work. My wife and I love you.
    QOTD: Iced Tea love em

Long Island – can you say “The Hamptons”? “National Golf Links” and some vastly improved wines from Martha Clara, Raphael, Pellegrini and Channing Daughters….all worth a taste imho
