Gary how about Cava and whites from northern Spain. I love that area and cava is so fantastic.

  • john_b

WHAT are you gonna do for the 1000th episode?? You BETTER go all out. I know you will. Not a wine buff, don’t even drink it. But read you book and saw your talk at Rails online and like your outlook on buisness. HUSTLE. Like what you said about the iminlikewithyou guy. “He’s hustling, and he’s trying…” that’s what biz is about.

    QOTD: Kosher Wine

  • LurkerKing

    Bring Jim Cramer back!!!!!

I agree GV. #1000 should be huge. Maybe a QOTD soon for you to prepare. For us Jets fans maybe get Wesley Walker as a guest. This might cost a bit, but how about doing another Judgement of Paris with some of the current versions of those red and or white wines. Talk about bringing the thunder. Maybe even Steve Spurrier might show. Ah, to dream.

I buy older wines from time to time, and I buy wines from auction. Could you talk about selecting older bottles and what to look for in auctions? Thanks!

  • Anonymous

Actually I like the screw top on a sparkling wine….cuz no way your getting that bad boy back in the bottle after popping that cork!!

  • NY Pete

yo GV … speaking of screwcaps, I just received a mixed case of 09 German and Austrian rieslings and gruner’s … ALL were screwcaps.

QOTD I’d really love to see you review some really easy to find wines that are rather low cost. I know there are a lot of real wine experts here who love you doing the rare, or unusual wines and stuff. but I’m a poor college student who gets his wine from the super market down the street. I’d like to know which brand might be selling a 90 point wine for under 10 bucks or something like that.

  • Rich Luc

Thanks again – interesting show- fizzy screw tops…

Suggestion: South African wines- “Goats Do Roam” “Goat Rotie” “Bored Doe”…the names are atrocious puns but the wines and their prices are pretty good…the fun continues on the label descriptions. They don’t take themselves too seriously but I like the wines…Can’t say I like Pinotage much though…maybe once my palate leaves its infancy.

  • Rich Luc

and many of their wines are screw tops e.g. 2008 Goats Do Roam

Do Neil Ellis Stellenbosch Cab (drinking now myself) vs ANY and I mean any Cali cab spare no expense BLIND!
I will mail YOU something cool if you don’t pick the Neil Ellis.

    Cava is the shizz!

  • Anonymous

PS – The same goes for his Sauv Blanc.

A men. Cremant and Cava rule. Champage is overpriced and not all that great if you ask me. Well, unless there is good Chatanooga caviar going!!

  • Anonymous

    Yeah!

  • Anonymous

Venetian? Really? I did not know that.

  • Anonymous

I’m probably to late to the game, but is it possible to find some wines from a state other than Cali, Oregon, Wash, or NY, that bring some thunder? How about Texas or Virginia. It is about time for another state to step it up

  • Ericzieg

This week: would love to see Sonoma Coast brown-bag.

  • Allan

    Thunder done gone evaporated? 😛

  • Sick wit it ShoeS!!

  • philoxera

Hey Bozo….Get off the couch and go back to work…..It’s Tuesday now and you have been on that couch since Friday afternoon…..Changin’ the wine world my A#*!…

  • Hey Gary

Love the laid back couch, definitely needs more of a gig.

In my opinion the best seal for sparkling wine is a beer crown seal that you see on a few Aussie wines these days. It still has a bit of a pop when you open it, but doesn’t have a chance of cork taint. It is definitely the way of the future (you’ll be able to quote me in 50 years).

QOTD: Things I would love to see on the show
    1. Tasmanian wines
    2. Asian wines (Japanese?)
    3. English wine
    4 ‘Other’ areas of Spain
    5 German reds

    Cheers
    Andrew

Gary done gone fell asleep, heeeyyy waaakkeeeee uuupppp gaaarrryyyyyy!?!?!?!!! :^)

The label said frizzante therefore I wasn’t expecting too many bubbles just a nice frizzante. That’s what you got.

QOTD: A brown bag comparison one day? One day focus on a specific varietal since the verdicchio episode made me run out an buy one. Mix it up because that’s what you do.

This is my last week as plcb. question of the day, what should I pick for my new DE name?

  • Oakmon’s BF

Maybe Sir Gary should host the Oz episode.

  • Berevinowu

FRIZZANTE! ergo less effervescense! Also, less $$$$! Gimme a spumante every time. Frizzante just seems a bit flat. Please revisit and explain this confusion to your Vayniaks.
BTW…You got the Giants wrong too!

  • Anonymous

You ask us for all these great suggestions for the week and we are already into Tuesday! “Thunder” be on HIATUS!!!!!!!!!

  • NY Pete

maybe his plane was hijacked … 😛

I’m not sure Primaterra counts as a “very small producer”. They are an invented brand.

That being said, I’ve never been a fan with the deference to “small producer” wines just due to that club membership. Small producers don’t necessarily have all the toys to help them make their wines the way they would love to.

Regarding frizzante/sparkling for Prosecco they can, for now, be made either in frizzante or sparkling style. However, stay tuned for massive changes in the Prosecco when a three tiered system rolls out (IGT, DOC, and DOCG – just when Prosecco gets popular…….they’ll move it beyond the grasp of the common drinker).

Oh, and to head off tangental musings, each DOC zone has to evaluate if they even LET producers cap with screws……..

Ha! The G-Men won big in Dallas. I don’t really care about the Giants, but I hate the Cowboys, so I enjoyed the romp. As for the wine show, meh. The screw top on the Prosecco intrigued me although I have had Prosecco capped with a traditional bottle cap that was just fine.

QOTD: R U doing any shows this week? I’d like to see a show on Zins.

How about a Bottle Shock episode?

Get 4 bottles of a good wine. Set 2 bottles aside (cellar, etc). Put the other 2 bottles in a box, put them in your trunk and drive around with them for one week. After the week, set one of these bottles aside with the other two.

Episode 1: taste a “shocked” bottle head to head with a rested bottle. Blind would be best, but maybe not necessary. This way you could see if jostling has any true effect on the wine.

Episode 2: After about one month of rest, taste the other two bottles head-to-head to see if the “shocked” bottle returned to its former glory.

    I WAAAAAAAAANNTTTSSSSSSS MYYYY WLTVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVEEEEE!!!!!!! :0P

Damn. It’s been a while since I’ve had the time to watch the show. I’m so glad you brought up something about the technology and trends in the industry, which gives me a thought on what to do next week or perhaps a later week…

Something I’ve been seeing when I visit wineries lately is the use of these instant aerator gadgets during tastings. Many of them swear by it, it seems for on-the-spot tastings, and although the Vinturi has been around a while, a lot of places are trending toward the in-bottle spout aerators like the VinOair or the Soiree (mainly because it’s less messy and it’s one-hand operation). Those that do planned and prescribed flights still decant in general, but those that do dynamic tastings based on the audience prefer the quick aerators.

I was wondering what your thoughts were on these gadgets. Perhaps you can even do a blind comparison against a control (i.e. a straight-from-the-bottle pour).

  • Collin Husbands

QotD – It has been my experience that too many wine drinkers, and even those who claim to be adventurous, still shun the dessert/sweet wines. How about a week of sweet wines to go with our upcoming Haloween candy, pumpkin pie, fruit cakes, or whatever the heck people will be comsuming over the holidays.

Ex – Sauternes, Icewine, TBAs, Muscats (Orange, Black, etc). There is a cool comapny out of CA called Quady that does good work. Just an idea.

Really loved those Peter Weygandt shows. When do we get the Nick Mangold guest appearance?

    “Drink to me only
    that’s all i aks…… ask…”

    🙂

  • agreed, I have been seeing crown caps on sparklers as well…notably the Bonny Doon “Riesling To Live”

  • StevenL

Hi Gary. Love the show. I’m a big fan of Portuguese wines. I’m partially biased being Portuguese but I have always felt you can get a great tasting wine at usually great prices. Can you do a show on your favorite wines that are $10 and under. They don’t neccassarily have to be Portuguese but just good wines at great prices. Thanks and keep up the good work Gary / Mott.

  • Allan

I am for ever and ever drinking Trappist beers out of my Riedel Burgundy glass. AMAZING!!!

    YEEEEEEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!! 😛

Westmalle Triple, by the way, might be the best beer on planet earth! Check it out. As complex as any bordeaux out there folks…. 🙂

  • Allan, Allan please Westmalle? Chimay Blue or Leffe Blue is on par
and Traquair is one step better it can age!!!! 10 years , and taking another step is Fullers Vintage Ale or Thomas Hardy Vintage selection age talk about a possible 25 years in bottle, that’s beer competing with Bordeaux 😀 Cheers!

  • lol

  • Allan

    …..my swedish friend……

You ARE boring and OLD, but i’ve mentioned this before right??? 😛 😛 😛 😛

It’s OK AndersN. Thomas Hardy Vintage IS SERIOUS SHIT i know! Have not had Fullers yet but will seek out. Traquair i’ve had (GREAT), but not aged. I still feel, in my heart that the Trappist beers BRING THE THUNDER! INDEED!!!! Age or no age. I was just pointing out that people deeply into wine need to check out Trappist Beers (or just beers in general) because of the simple fact THAT THEY’RE JUST AS GOOD AS WINE WITH FOOD. end qoute! Hope this BROUGHT THE THUNDER!

(P.s. Leffe is NOT a trappist beer, but you knew that?)

  • Allan
