Worst guest ever.
This guy is an absolute nightmare, even if he does has some interesting things to say. Way too serious, way too obsessed with himself, way too blinkered in his own little world…and he’s wearing a hat! That in itself marks him down as someone to avoid. He gives me the impression of the sort of person who would have some very dodgy stuff in his garage – probably a dress made out of human skin or something similar. I could be wrong but my ‘crazy guy’ radar went haywire when watching this episode.

    Apologies.

I read through other comments and learned he was still suffering from running the NYC marathon. This explained his two-handed move to smell.

The rest of my comment stands.

    Nutjob, plain and simple.

Sometimes I wish GV would hold guests’ feet to the fire a little more and make them back up their statements when they start spouting off bulls— like that. But it’s probably for the best that he keeps it classy.

  • Tim SPEAR was great! Marathons are no joke so you gotta give him props there. Great guest

This guest shows signs of serious mental illness. Not trying to be nasty or even funny.

  • Seems like a pretty normal dude to me, but then again i’m from Cali.
Passionate guy with a great history, keep em coming Gary

The guy ran a marathon, and then showed up to be broadcast worldwide. I’d be sipping with a straw. He also opened by saying that he’s a hedonist. You can’t be shocked if he’s got an ego.

I don’t see how you can believe so strongly in French ‘terroir’ – including previously “being winemaker at DRC”, wanting to make a wine to rival Petrus, and working with big Bordeaux names – yet settle down to make wine in California?

Interesting guest and a fairly intense show…I like where its going!

This is kind of sad to watch; he’s so self-indulgent and self-important. His insecurities are almost tragic because they’re so transparent.

Found 2006 Petite Rousse in a Toronto LCBO ($CDN22) and remembered this episode. So now I am drinking the wine and re-watching – so I thought I’d post a few notes. This wine is clearly unfiltered – throwing sediment in the glass and inside the bottle. I get the red fruit and berries – but what I really sensed at first was a ‘winey-ness’ like eating purple wine gum. I get the meaty, gamey descriptors int this wine and GV is right is has no heat to it at 15% but it coats the tongue and digs into the sides of your tongue with a persistent finish. My appreciation for this wine is growing as I taste and re-taste it – because it definitely didn’t match any previous notion of what a Paso Robles Syrah could, would or should taste like. Fun experiment.

  • The guy has ionteresting philosophies, a little weird but his wine pholosophy seems to be on the ball, he definitely learned from the best, from what he said.
