Line of the day – ‘Grandpa Jack is gonna like this’

It’s almost turning into the Gary and Mott show at this stage (with Mott going back to his old ‘yes man’ routine), but a typically entertaining quarter of an hour

  • Ahhh I’m getting ready to watch this soon with the peeps. The bottles are uncorked, breathing, waiting for the big moment.May all have a wonderful Happy Thanksgiving!Back soon to comment. I have to check the bird and root for the Lions!!!Cheers everyone!

  • Thanks Dan. Right back at you. I actually made dinner this evening. A three course meal ( I do that on thursdays for my family) Entre a carrot toast with dried ham and peppery salami topped with a horseradish creeme and marinated artichocke heart. Pan fried salmon with pesto sauce and fennel rabbi, boiled and pressed potato as main course. A plain fruit salad for dessert.

  • do u sell the korean beef jerky @ the store? not sure why, but sounds yummy

Most Honarable “Thunder” emited from this show. Thank you Gary for your shows. I decided to have an Amavi Cellars 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon with the family and it was a hit. It went very well with the turkey and was enjoyed by all.

What happened to GROS VERDOT? Off topic I know, probably a forum question too but: Gros verdot is one of the grapes permitted in Meritage, petite verdot is known (and awesome), so how come you never hear about gros verdot? I’ve never seen a wine that had gros verdot in it, much less a varietal gros verdot wine. Is it just a varietal that doesn’t make decent wine? Either way i want to get my hands on one, if there’s any out there

Qotd: I work on Thanksgiving, but when my family celebrates it this Sunday I’ll be a having an off dry German riesling, a French cinsault from southern France, and I’ve been looking for an excuse to have a pecan pie with a meal because I hear it goes great with Pedro Ximenez (and I’ve been dying to try that combo). So I’ll be bringing those too. Happy Thanksgiving Everyone! It would’ve been nice to have had the chance to get the secret pack, but with MD’s lovely little liquor laws that obviously isn’t an option for me.

    Best Thanksgiving movie, no question

  • Wines were delicious!

The PA Chairman’s Selection has a Studert-Prum Kabinett Riesling for 13.99:

Studert Prum Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett 2008

The Wine Spectator 88 points: ‘This has an austere, almost stony aroma, yet there’s nice richness in this off-dry kabinett. Nectarine, apple and slate flavors mingle in its cool profile, with nice length. Best from 2010 through 2020. 1,000 cases made.’ Dec 2009

Thanks for the show and Happy Tanksgiving to you and yours.

QOTD: We enjoyed the 2006 Crauford Kilt Lifter Zin. It was yummy!

We had a bottle of Domina with Thanksgiving dinner and it was the perfect match! Domina is a little known red grape variety, planted in Germany, I think there’s some Pinot Noir in its parentage. The somewhat salty food really brought out the sweetness of the fruit in the wine, and it played so well with the cranberry chutney… Yum.

Can you believe it, Gary gets off scot free without anyone guessing the right score from yesterday. Way to go GV!!!!!!!!!!!!! πŸ˜›

QOTD: 2005 Zarate Tras Da Vina Albarino. So good! 30 months on its lees in stainless steel really gave this wine weight and structure, but the acidity and freshness totally popped! Thanks Mom for this great birthday present that I got to enjoy with you and the rest of my family.

Had a great Thanksgiving, typical good wines, 15 year old burgandy, 10 year old Chard, recent Reisling. But the surprise of the night was a 1991 Schmitt SΓΆhne Bornheimer Adelberg Riesling Kabinett which had been lost in my cellar and forgotton. Was great when the ice cream and pies came out.

  • Hope you and the family had a great Thanksgiving. With the Jets winning, I’m sure that was the Cool-Whip on the pie!

The traditional “Quaf Along with GV @ Thanksgiving” was a success again though we held the event at the end of the evening when we should have done it before the feast as in years past. That being said, great show and alot of fun. I even played the prior show with the shoutout so I became a star for one fleeting moment.

Good wines, everyone loved the Riesling, some were so-so on the Pape but that was somewhat assumed given the “youngloods” in the group and the Malbec was spectacular.

QOTD: The hit of the weekend (so far) was an ’09 Thibault Liber-Belair Moulin-a-Vent Cru Beaujolais. Paired wonderfully with the entire melange of flavors of the feast.

    Happy Thanksgiving to all

  • The Amavi Cab is a very nice wine.

    thanks, Gary!

qotd: 2007 Copain Kiser “En Haut” Pinot Noir. I think it’s worth mentioning that, while I think this one drank the best that day, the wine that I believe had the most potential was the 2004 Kracher TBA No.4 Scheurebe Zwischen den Seen. It is so young, but so complete, and I’d love to be able to check it out in 15-20 years.

Had Rustico Prosecco, the Laperre 2009 Morgon you just reviewed and Lioco Chardonnay from 2008 Carneros. We put chorizo in the stuffing and that is not usual but traditional in Santa Fe.

The Thanksgiving Secret Pack was a great selection of wines. The Riesling was definitely a crowd favorite (and my favorite). You were right on with more people preferring the Malbec over the Chateaneuf Du Pape, but all were enjoyed. I think the only regret was that we only ordered one!

  • ALLAN

Good show and Happy Thanksgiving GV!
I need to drink down my inventory so I didn’t order the secret pack of wines but my extended family had a great meal and we all enjoyed some great wines. We had:
2008 Justin Vineyard Savant – Cab Syrah blend – spicy and very good
2008 Justin Vineyard Chardonnay Reserve – big lemon flavor, crisp, used all new oak but you couldn’t tell
2006 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast – initially a typical big pinot from KB but opened up nicely, excellent
2004 Rosenblum Cellars Zinfandel Reserve Hendry Ranch – big zin but with great depth and balance, the fruit hides the alcohol very well, excellent wine hitting its stride.

GARY! While in production of a recent film I worked on, I spread the word and tried to expand the Vayener-Nation (60 + people). I streamed one of your videos during our lunch break. It would mean so much to me(!!!), and be such a kick to our crew if you gave us a shout out. Our film was called “Transatlantic Coffee”. Check it out on IMDB. We love you Gary (We’re addicted ). Happy Holidays! Cheers!

LOVE German Rieslings, the 09’s are great
Von Hovel, Shafer Frolich Kabinets, etc…

  • Anonymous

Love German Rieslings, So versatile. you just haVE TO learn about them.
A bit complicated at first, but check Gary’s Archives, and listen
Had Von Hovel 09 Kabinet. The 09s are special

  • WE do a large Thanksgiving 30-40 (1/2 non family) so we don’t do much fine wine. We generally go with Portuguese or other food and budget friendly wine. Now after it’s all over and we have the house to ourselves again….

It was our last for awhile (we are moving quite aways away) and a good time was had by all. We are going to pull some mid 90’s Sonoma Cab probably to toast, once all the relatives leave.

  • QOTD: 2007 Eyrie Pinot gris and 2008 Brick House Gamay Noir.

  • LurkerKing

Bringing legitimacy to lurkers since 1992.

  • ALLAN

Bringing the comments-thunder since the beginning of time.

GR8 secret pak, Gary! Nice to hear views from Mott as well.

Best wine of Thanksgiving weekend – the above Riesling!

    See you in December.

  • DaveAll

I agree. someday he will expand his palate beyond wine and will replace the greats at Late night .

  • Don Simpson

QOTD: Best wine of Thanksgiving weekend was a 2004 Nicolis Amarone, followed by an NV Schramsberg Blancs de Blancs.
