  • Nice show – one wine perfect for a hectic Tuesday!

QOTD: Fontafredda Barbera D’Alba – actually probably one of the best wines I’ve ever tasted. TV show = The Wire

And a big thanks for the recent cava show!

  • My best weird Italian this year was definitely “ruchΓ©. The wine had a texture like a pinot noir, a nose like a zin, and nebbiolo-like flavors……….wild!
    Congrats on your Jets
    oh yeah….I forgot…..The Daily Show

QOTD: Had to be Pignolo….great wine…and VERY interesting…

  • I like the setup a lot. Keeps me informed.

    QOTD: WONDER YEARS!!!!!!

The most interesting place in Italy that I have tasted wine from was… I cannot remember but I remember the wine shop that I tasted it in. It was a really obscure grape and the region was not well known however I do recall that the tannins were excruciatingly difficult on my palate.

nice to have a short show once in a while. (busy day of the week) good show. I need to seek out this grape variety.
QotD: Montepulciano D’Abruzzo and Modern Family. (and Fringe (before they went all parallel world crazy) and House, and Hawaii 50, and Big Bang Theory, and …. that’s it.)

QOTD: I am only to able to answer my favorite TV show; it’s GOT to be Modern Family. That show is well written and perfectly cast!

I don’t drink a lot of Italian wines, as I generally don’t drink wines I can’t pronounce. But
we do enjoy very much the Trentatre Rosso Salento red blend.
QOTD#2- Lyon In The Kitchen, & The Good Wife.

  • Anonymous

Don’t drink that many Italian wines.
    Top Chef / True Blood

QOTD1-Searching for a less sweet Prosecco I tried all the available producers in my area in 2010
QOTD2-Used to love Barolo before prices went up
QOTD3-I like the American Pickers show lately.

  • I had an amazing bottle of Lagrein Gries at the Breslin in NYC. Can you tell me the flavor profile what some good vintners are for this grape?

  • For a really nice less sweet Prosecco check out this one: http://winelibrary.com/wines/65860-Nino+Franco+Rustico+Prosecco+750ML

  • U need to change that!

  • Awesome good to know!

Italian Wines are my FavoRiTe!!! Haven’t heard of this one before, but now I want to try. Started my first “wine class” tonight! So excited.
Friends was probably my favorite tv show since the 90s…I love Nurse Jackie on Showtime.

Obscure Wine in 2010 — tried a couple of aglianicos on your recommendation
    TV Show — Modern Family

A friend in the wine biz urged me to buy a couple bottles of the Priorat you weren’t crazy about the other day. Haven’t opened yet. Will my palate be more like my friend’s or yours? Should I open now, or let it age before I find out?

  • QOTD: I really have not explored Italy too much but late last year I had my first Montepulciano and I enjoyed it. I look forward to tasting some Piemonte wines next month with my tasting group. BTW great show, I have never come across Teroldego before and it sounds very interesting

Guess I should have gotten it earlier! Thanks for responding.

QOTD: Nothing too outside the box from Italy. I’ve gone back to a few Barberas, drank more Brunellos which I enjoy very much, and after seeing a few Barbaresco episodes went back to one or two of those, especially a ’98 Principiano which I loved. Also some aged Amarones and Barolos which were fantastic. Purchased a few Italian white wines recently but haven’t tried them yet.

Favorite TV show: Presently, Top Chef and many of the series on Showtime such as Dexter, Californication, Nurse Jackie, Weeds and the latest entries seem pretty good such as Shameless.

I’d chip in for you Danes and Swedes, etc to come over any day. We’re just organizing our own meeting in the San Francisco area (sans Gary, unfortunately) so I am being serious when I say it would be great to meet the “European Contingency” of Vayniacs…

p.s. I, too, lurked for a Long time before starting to post less than two years ago. ;P

In 2010 I drank Falesco Vitiano Umbria 9 different times, and at least 2/3 of those times, this little $8 bottle of wine delivered in spades. I likes the La Magi Riserva Brunello better, but you could buy between 4 & 7 bottles of the Falesco for the same cost as a La Magi. I also was impressed with a 1998 Vigneti del GASO Amarone, also closer to the Le Magi in price than the Falesco. Favorite TV: NCIS or watching any Yankee victory.

QOTD; Barolo, Two and half men

  • Alright alright, I am going to go in reverse order on the QOTD just to try something new. My favourite show is by far How I Met Your Mother. Steller! Italian wines, I have been getting into the Puglia again, I like the freshness that I can sip after work to wind down. I am also a fan of these tight episodes. One wine, go deep into what really makes the wine unique, the region, producer, grape etc. I dig it garyv.

  • Yo Gary,
    This weekend I had a 1997 Travaglini Gattinara.Viva Italia!
    Foodie@amaninthekitchen.com

  • Don’t know too much about Italian wines as I am just beginning my journey in the world of wines but favorite tv show, I guess I got to go with Seinfield.

PS. LETS GO STEELERS(sorry, I’m from Pittsburgh)

I always like seeing new varietals.

    Always Sunny.

  • What? Randall, you were once a lurker?? No way! (yes, I pressed the sarcasm key ) Cheers.

  • Randall

Oh, I lurked for ages, LisaS, just being a curmudgeonly old man… Now I’m so glad that I left the Lurking Wasteland and post with such Awesome fellow winos.

You have to share your technological advances with me.
I have ideas for putting such a sarcasm shortcut key to Good use.
    ;P

  • Hi Gary –
QOTD: Italian wine to explore this year: Nebbiolo.. (it’s about time I explored this grape. I think I said the same thing last year.. Yikes.)
Favorite show: House (as others have also mentioned below).

  • Technological advances? Oh dear you give me too much credit. I can’t manage Disqus for heaven’s sake.

  • Randall

Yes, but you’ve managed to write the code for the ever-elusive “sarcasm font” that I’ve been seeking like it was the Holy Freaking Grail. πŸ˜‰ Forum bullies and nay-saying nay-bobs of negativity NEED to feel its sting.

p.s. castello, mattgmann and Mott gave me the best advice I’ve ever gotten on WLTV, namely to switch over to surfing the net using Firefox or Google’s Chrome. My issues with Disgust have vanished like the finish of a weak Argentinian Malbec… πŸ˜€

  • Hilarious, Randall (really)! I tried to post a comment using Firefox while at work earlier today, but had issues with it as well. What the heck? Could be a Stanford firewall issue. I’ll try Google’s Chrome next. Thx!

  • Globex

Thanks for introducing this wine to me GV, curious to taste it for myself.

QOTD: my favorite Italian wine of 2010 was the 2007 Torre Quarto Bottaccia Nero Di Troia. Not sure if that qualifies for “out of the box”, but I recently bought more of it apparently just in time because I noticed you’re now sold out of it. Absolute Deliciousness!!!!

QOTD: TV shows I enjoy watching include WineLibraryTV, Entourage, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Californication, and Family Guy.

QOTD1. I was flabbergasted by the Campania region. Aglianico is super, Falanghina is also exciting.
For 2011 I’m gonna explore more Campania. But also much ‘in the box’ like Nebbiolo, Brunello, …..

Nice Teroldego showcase, brief yet info-rich. Great QOTDs! Here goes…

QOTD 1 a: Most interesting Italian wine of 2010: Franciacorta, hands down.
QOTD 1 b: Italian wine I will be exploring in 2011: Aglianico! (del Vulture and del Taburno)
QOTD 2: I just recently was given season 1 of “Mad Men” on DVD… and I’m hooked. I MUST get my hands on season 2 ASAP!

    Hi!
QOTD: Wine based on the grape Freisa (from Piemonte) i something special to explore i 2011. I think the “sparkling wine feeling” is very interesting and unique, along with the wild red berries.
I also think that the orange wine of Sicilia is something to explore. Pure natural wine, with ALOT of tannins.

Thanks for a great show πŸ™‚

  • QOTD1: as an italian it’s a weird question as I basically drink italian wines all the year long, so I’ll say what I discovered a bit more in the last weeks, Vernaccia di San Gimignano.

QOTD2: my favourite TV show at the moment is called Fuori MenΓΉ, a culinary show very nice

  • Might be landing i San Fran i october, maybe rent a car to drive up to oregon (to my brother).

  • Pnova – THANK YOU! I am having the exact same problem. First an unannounced vacation and now no podcast?!?!? We need some help Mott, STAT!!

I have had a craving for Barbera for WEEKS now… if you are currently on NZ south island and know where I can find a good one, it is nice to meet you, I am your new best friend.

As for tv show, How I Met Your Mother is legen… wait for it… DARY! On that note, my friends and I have a weekly HIMYM night where (since we cannot be trusted with wine on a week night) we have been experimenting with ice cream floats. New favorite and in my opinion, the best float EVER created- fanta and hokey pokey ice cream. It tastes like fuzzy orange sherbert. DELICIOUS!

If you’re looking to hang in the general price range of Falesco, you might try Dolcetto d’Alba, Barbera d’Asti, and even Dolcetto di Dogliani – as well as Valpolicella Classico Superiore (Ripasso, etc); all soft, plump, juicy reds with plummy fruit and early appeal. Stick with reliable producers and check the vintage (in general, ’08 was better for whites and ’09 more consistent for the reds). Most are under $20 with a few in the $15 range and these wines seem to have mass appeal because of their up-front fruit and immediate accessibility. They can last for several years in a cold cellar, but after you try them you won’t want to wait! One of my earliest bargain discoveries & still one of my favorites! Just FWIW…
