  • Oak monster? He was the one snoring. 😉

  • Her soul in division from itself
Climbing, falling She knew not where,
Hiding amid the cargo of a steamship,
Her knee-cap broken, that girl I declare
A beautiful lofty thing, or a thing
    Heroically lost, heroically found.

I stand corrected my friend. 🙂

Louis Martini! I have purchased for as little as $13 at my local retailer and love the value equation. J. Lohr Seven Oaks is another choice that lands on that general price point.

I have alway like the Clos Du Bois Cabs.

  • Anonymous

    ehm….oak?

  • Anonymous

That’s my sentiment exactly. I’ll have to get that ONE wine soon. How about st. Joseph? Does that do anything for you?

  • Anonymous

I seriously hope that all I’ll be doing when I’m 50 is to squeek “sniffy-sniff” like a teenage girl would.

  • Anonymous

Definately worth trying. It’s one of the only napa cabs I ever had, but I really liked it.

Where do you get that Oz Clarke prediction from? Pure fantasy or what? I would really love to see Gary with OC. It would be a BLAST I suspect.

Agree on the Hall, good juice!

Nico, most of my 2002’s peaked about 1.5 years ago, depending on how it was cellared I would say throw a NY strip on the grill and decant that puppy! The 02’s were lush and early maturing IMHO, so I wouold not wait too long.

I’m a big Rhone fan in general, so yes, I’m a St Joseph fan. It’s not a super available variety here, and the price point is generally more in line with good Gigondas or low end CdP ($20-40). From a value standpoint, it’s middle of the pack IMO.

The only inexpensive Napa red I’ve tasted that I liked is Louis Martini.

very boring wines!!! but ill watch anyway, cause im a sheep. very frusterating!!!

Obsidian Ridge. Their 07 Cab is available mid $20s retail and is in my opinion the best Napa Cab out there at that price point.

  • Anonymous

    Burgess Cellars Cabernet
great classic Napa Cab around 25 bucks

  • Anonymous

Have 3-5 wines that Bring The Thunder, like the 90+pt wines you tasted with James Suckling!

  • Yeah, that’s a stretch.. Wishful thinking?

  • Anonymous

Killer format, Gary. Head to head rocks.

QOTD: Too new of a wine drinker to have a favorite CA CAB…

  • Anonymous

    Northern/Central California!

  • Anonymous

    First!

I would have to say the Louis Martini. Very good for the money!

OK Gary, you got one more lurker coming out to coment.

I liked the head-to-head tasting, it puts the wines in a bit of context. I really liked when you were doing blind old world vs. new world tastings. But I am also a fan of this format.

As for the QOTD, I used to be a big fan of St. Clement and Freemark Abbey, but those have been slowly creeping up in price points. My current fave is the 2005 Chateau Chevalier, which offers an amazing amount of complexity for about $20

Oberon is declassified Opus One fruit. Nothing to write home about. Mondavi wines are worth trying

  • Yep. It’s funny how turning 50 still hurts when your mind is 27,529,31,33, yeah 33

  • hmm, every country seem to raise the retirement age these days. Ours will be 67-69 if the politicians in charge get there will.

  • Did you check out the 2buckchuck episode as well?

  • Anonymous

HESS. Yep I know i’m boring. I like cabs from Alexander valley better than Napa Cabs.

  • I know!!!

  • Anonymous

Well, I guess I should do some soul searching….Just looked at the cellar and theirs nothing under $30. Even with the industry discount I get. Hmmm….I’m going to have to find some South African Cabernet soon. Then I can “Saw Logs” in peasce.

Love the head to head. Lets see some premium N Rhone Whites!!!!!!!!

QOTD: I Don’t buy California Cabernet anymore for home consumption, however, I used to enjoy Conn Creek’s Cab that was selling at Trader Joe’s for under $30.

  • A_S

QOTD: can only think of a Cab Franc at the moment.

2005 Truchard Cabernet Franc – Carneros, Napa

  • Anonymous

QOTD: Not drinking as much CA cab as I used to but, the R Collection ’05 cab is pretty good for under $30. My husband and I prefer the Amavi Washington State cab.

  • Ah, never looked at the Los Altos Grill wine list. It is interesting. I usually eat further North. My latest find is Station 1 which has a small list but it is interesting and everything is available by the glass and even by the taste. When I was there they had falanghina, vermentino, and grenache on the list. I more often frequent Martins West in RWC though. They are better known for there beer and scotch but have a decent wine list and it is a nice casual place.

Randall where are you? Maybe its time for a bay area WLTV event.

    Yes I did thanks AndersN.

oh how things change — have not had the Louis Martini but have had the Fuse at a friends. I thought it was one of the worst over-oaked wines I have had in awhile and would have given it a 75 and a pazzzzzz. I am worried about your palate GV! I used to be able to trust your palate that was in line with mine. Now I will have to taste more for myself. Oh well — it was good while it lasted.
QOTD: Have not found a Napa Cab that I really liked in that price point. In that price point I really like some of the Cab’s from Washington state.

  • I’ll check out both Station 1 and Martins West..Thx. We just had a Bay Area event.. How did we miss you? Castello, and Randall were spreading the news a few weeks before on this site.. Randall is in Sacramento.. anyway, Cellarrat5 and JFarrin also made appearances.. I’m sure we’ll do it again soon. Cheers.

07 Fuse and Louis Martini cabs together on the show and the OAK MONSTER didn´t make an appearance????
    interesting.

Hey guys, I wish that I could relate to all the comments and interest in Nappa Cab and other US wines but, here in the UK, we rarely see anything from our US friends. It is very hard for us here to get a sense of your Nappa etc QUALITY wines because the uk importers either can’t be bothered or the pricing is way beyond what we expect to pay!
Gary, can you influence uk importers to embrace the grat wines your country has to offer?

  • QOTD: Sean Minor or Joel Gott but can’t drink them anymore

  • I have always liked a variety of lengths. Sometimes I want to chillax with an episode, sometimes I gots to get it in a carazy day.
    Sorry I haven’t commented in a while…

  • David M Roberts

Great QOTD and nice, tidy format to the episode.

For $18, I like B.R. Cohn Silver Label Cabernet. It is an elegant bottle for the price, with some chalky cellar dust elements I really enjoy. Otherwise, most offerings from Clos du Bois are always an easy choice. Finally, I have always said that Louis Martini, for being such a huge producer, makes quality juice. This highlights that presumption.
