Thanks for the Oregon love! Unfortunately, the best local wineries are still producing really small lots, but there is some great stuff going on around here. My faves are grower-producers like Evesham Wood & Illahe, or else urban negociants like gc, Hawkins, and Helioterra.

    QOTD:
With all the gray and rain in the Oregon winter, I’ve been listening to singer-songwriters like Tom Waits and Townes Van Zandt

2008 gets a lot of love, but every vintage is unique and different. 2007 was really bright and friuty, with great acidity. 2008 has great structure, and needs to age for a decade. 2009 was a really warm vintage; it’s super fruity and is ready to drink now. Drink 07 with salmon, have 08 with red meat, and 09 with poultry

  • QOTD: Sissy’s Song by Alan Jackson
I converted to pretty much all country a couples years ago which is pretty weird compared to what(garbage) I used to listen to back in high school.

If you are in Salem, check out Illahe or Evesham Wood. If you are around Yamhill/Carlton, check out Cana’s Feast and Elk Cove. And if you are in Dundee, check out Patty Green and Penner-Ash. Or just ignore me and check out some of the many awesome wineries in the area

Love da M,M & W… But there’s a galaxy of Incredutabulous bass players out there.
Ron Carter, Charles Fambrough, Viktor Krauss, Charlie Hayden, John Pattitucci, Edgar Meyer, etc etc etc…

  • Interesting show. I admit I haven’t had enough Willamette wine. Adelsheim sounds like an interesting one to try. Will have to explore more. I will say I just had a WillaKenzie Pinot Blanc over the weekend which I thought was quite nice though.

QOTD: My nine year old son is obsessed with Katy Perry’s Fireworks so that is the only thing I hear in the house right now ;).

  • Ditto! Hilarious!

Good show. I am a big fan of consistency in wine quality from a region.
Qotd: the class level may go down with this one but “I just had sex” by lonely island and akon. it is hilarious.

I feel bad for you man. just be thankful its not beiber.

I’m telling you man, as far as lighter white wines are concerned texas does them well. try some stuff from llano estacado – i’ve had the signature white and reisling and they were both good. messino hoff can be okay but overrated around the local town where i used to go to college imo.

  • Excellent show! Love Willamette Pinot Noir! Appreciated the background info on Willamette, Gary. I attended a local tasting back in Nov. of 08 Willamette PN The standouts were the Penner-Ash 08 at $35. The Evening Land Seven Springs LaSource was a hit and sold out quickly at $55. I liked the Ponzi Willamette for $29 too. I’ve seen the Benton Lane and wondered about. thx. Good show!

QOTD: Can’t think of anything new.. although Genie in a Bottle has been playing in my head for some reason.. I had to laugh at all of the Justin Bieber comments below.. but he’s so cute?

QOTD – Recently I have been listened to Led Zeppelin “How The West Was Won” live album. The double CD has some sick tracks, jimmy page is a beast.

I definitely love a good pinot. I actually like some of the inexpensive pinots from Willamette Valley Vineyards. They know how to create a good product.

QOTD I love the way you lie, Pt 2

  • QOTD: you’re more of a pop/rock/rap guy if I’m not mistaken, but I’m a jazz guy. New artist I discovered recently is Will Vinson, a saxophone player. Just awesome. http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/dean-street-rundown/id397180381?i=397180418&uo=4

I think he only recommends 89 to 90 pointers as he is fairly sure no one will be disappointed for the money. Lots of folks buy only 90 and above but it’s complicated. Pretty good analogy with baseball.

Wow! I agree with literally everything you said about these wines and Willamette Valley. I have had pinots from all of these wineries dozens of times. The Benton Lane and the Adelsheim wines have been around my house for years and years, and still are. Willamette Valley is dead-center in the “sweet spot” of my tastes preferences.

  • Over The Hills & Far Away by the mighty Zep… It doesn’t get any better then that! Nice stuff Gary. I hate it when they dose Pinot with Syrah. I think someone should be bold enough to come out with a pinot/syrah blend on the label, then it would be fine with me. Getting close to the Millennium… The Millennials should love it. You should shoot for as many Millennials as possible to watch your 1,000th episode. How many comments can you get from that? Just saying. Late

  • That show hit the spot. Love Pinot Noirs and I had several good Willamette ones during my recent trip stateside. Too bad they have not yet made their way to The Rock.

QOTD: The National, “Conversation 16” from their recent album High Violet.

Willamette Pinot Noir!! Great Ep. theme, with LOTS of info about the region.
**I only wished you had mentioned that the 2008 vintage has been evaluated as and considered THE BEST VINTAGE in Willamette in a few decades!! Apparently they had a perfect growing season and produced wines with great quality across the board. 2009 had similar results overall, but there was a heat spike in late July whereas 2008 had even ripening from bud break to harvest.

QOTD: Janelle MonΓ‘e!! I’m all about her album “The Archandroid,” and if you want me to recommend a song, I’ll give you a few…or just GET THE ALBUM:
“Dance or Die,” “Faster,” “Cold War,” “Tightrope.”

QOTD: I’m not listening to a song. I’m watching WLTV. LOL. In my head I hear Nothin’ On You (featuring Bruno Mars) because my ten year old was singing it. From this year’s Grammys, I prefer Mumford and Sons over Bruno Mars.

Big fan of Willamette!!!!!! I like Chehalem along with many others.

Great show – Oregon pinot noirs are starting to appear here in the UK.
Interestingly, the Wine Society are currently selling the 2007 Lemelson Thea’s Selection, and say ‘The 2007 of this superb Oregon pinot noir has lovely structure, restraint and balance. This is fresher than previous vintages and appeals for its subtlety rather than power (the reason the American market didn’t rate this vintage which brought the price down substantially)’.
Looks like Gary has a European palate !

Thanks for the Willamette Valley shout out. I like it here. Great wine, great beer, big mountains. It did snow for a few minutes a couple days ago, that was kinda lame…
