Nice job! Really enjoying these episodes….

    QOTD 1: Yes. I’m a fan of Kahuna’s Food & Wine.
    QOTD 2: I don’t care, it’s only football.
QOTD 3: Haven’t tried any Austrian Rieslings yet.
QOTD 4: Yes, sparklers anytime at all.

  • Anonymous

my question …… did D-Rod’s date ever come back from the bathroom ……

  • QOTD 1: Nope.
QOTD 2: YES! J-E-T-S. JETS JETS JETS
QOTD 3: WIsh I could drink more Pichler. Really.
QOTD 4: MY wife loves sparkling wine. We would drink it daily.

waiting for Kahuna to update the spreadsheet… gonna be tough since Gary wasn’t throwing out scores for everything!

Man, how can you go wrong with Vega and Monte Bello and Donnhoff. Like you just said pick the best of type and go with it. I actually am a bigger fan of the baby Monte Bello as it tends to be a better buy and gives me almost as much and drinks sooner.
I drink a lot of champagne and not just for occasions but I reserve the big boys like Billecart Salmon for occasions. Champagne and chateau briand great combo with a bernaise. Hope the Jets can do it this next year. Already tired of thinking about MLB getting in the way of football. Love these episodes. Should have offered it to us off forum who post here. Would have been there and I can’t even figure out an easy way to get to Springfield from Santa Fe.

  • Jack Johnson? No way, Jack is dramatically better looking 😉

    lol, indeed she did.

    hahaha, thanks champ.

Good Luck on the Masters Thesis, even though you don’t need it. I am sure you are going to do a great job on it.

Sorry you didn’t have enough time in Barcelona. I was there once and really didn’t get the chance to enjoy the real ambiance of the city, plus it was a few years ago and things have changed quite a bit from what I read and hear.

    QsOTD:
    1. YES/yes, from time to time
    2. No- the Packers will beat them in the Super Bowl!
    3. No, I’ve tried almost every other type of Austrian white; it’s on my short list of things to drink this year, though!
    4. Yes, on average a sparkler a month, a pretty even breakdown of Cava/Prosecco/Cali/Champagne. Although I want to start drinking it even more often.

Didn’t answer one question. Not a fan of Austrian Riesling. Prefer Germany and prefer Grüner in Austria.

I agree. we had a stellar lineup for this ep. I was really hoping for bigger things from the Donnhoff, but you gotta call ’em like you see ’em and this one just didn’t meet (admittedly lofty) expectations. I liked the Pichler considerably more, but we’re comparing apples to oranges because they were so different in style.

The Ridge Santa Cruz Mountains Estate (baby Monte Bello) is a stellar buy, completely agree. I would not take one Monte Bello (even the magnificent 07) instead of three bottles of the SCME red. In other words, the Quality-to-price doesn’t compare. But if you want the best… well, yeah.

Keep in mind that we had to pick things that we thought would be drinking relatively well now and under 200 bucks. This is in a retail store which gets through inventory very quickly, so you really didn’t have that much aged bordeaux. (except in the extra exclusive mini room within the cold room, but none of us would dare go in there…)

Wow!!! Just watched the show, it’s got to be one of the BEST EVER, for sure the most FUN!!

The Vayniac shows were all amazing, but the crew today was special, K-Murph, Mott&Co.!!

My jaw hurts, so much I laughed!!!

    QOTD1: Logging in right now! Kahuna’s Food & Wine…
    QOTD2: GO JETS!!!
QOTD3: Not yet, sorry. Definitely going to.
QOTD4: I LOVE Sparkling Wine, Brazil is doing real damage on the Bubbles. I do drink without celebratory reasons. Actually, when you pop Champagne, any moment becomes a Celebration!

Thank you Gary, Mott, K-Murph, and the AWESOME VAYNIACS, for this great moments!!

Cheers, from the #1 Vayniac from Brazil.

  • This is the 7th episode in a row that won’t play on my ipod. All my other video podcasts continue to play without a problem. It’s definitely you guys. And with 1,000 coming up. Bummer.

The crowd is getting a little more ADD with each passing show 😉
    QOTD:
Yes, but haven’t watched for some reason
    maybe
no(I know, kick me out of the club)
    ditto

As the episodes progress this week the mob gets a little more unruly. I fully expected in tomorrow’s episode everyone will be blitzed, perhaps one person unconscious, and the episode to end with some drunk singing.

  • I’m not a middle-aged man. I just couldn’t be there because I had to go to a funeral. 🙁

  • You have Ridge Monte Bello listed as a Sonoma Red Blend. Try Santa Cruz Mountains. Very different neck of the woods.

  • NY Pete

ask winestein what my pick would have been … 🙂

  • Anonymous

I am sorry for your loss.
You would have made a worth addition to the episode.

  • Thanks for the shout-out, Lou – and if I ever get within 5 feet of GV, I’m totally kicking his ass over Ham-elia. LOL

  • BuffaloLou

Great ep! Loved the ‘dualing’ Rieslings from Germany and Austria. From the TNs given, sounds like I learned that Germany is more my style.

No surprise on the Ridge Monte Bello. It’s a great bottle year after year.

The RdD sounded great. Would have been interesting if you could have had it decanted for a while…

Loved the laughter… It’s what wine’s all about… good times with friends. Cheers!

  • Troytee

    Stars of the show….
    1. Trouty and KMurph doing Waldorf and Statler from the Muppets in the background
    2. Drod being the anchor and on point
    3. Only 1 California wine
    4. Road Warior reference by GV. Hawk and Animal were the best
Nice job! 999 and 1000 willl be hard pressed to beat 998!

  • Well, in my humble opinion, No on the Monte Bello, unless you are willing to lay it down and wait several yrs. I just don’t know what the fuss is about. I’ve only had it once the (’06), but I’ve been told it’s amazing after 10 yrs. I can’t wait that long. Life is short.

  • absolutely I have sparkling wine when it pairs well with our dinner. We just had a bottle of New York Sweedish Hill last weekend with a chicken dish and it was perfect. Also find it great with Crabmeat Rissotto.

  • I wouldn’t leave you on a date…especially with bottles of sparklers at the table. Remember that youngin’ 😉

  • gasoline and bitters? ;P

  • @Randintheicity – I think he should have a ladies sparkler round table. But, that’s just me. 😉 Let’s pull out the $200 dollar bottles of bubbles on his arse. ;P

    Never heard of the website.
There’s not going to be NFL football next season.
    Can’t remember.
I drink sparkling all the time.

  • Coupe 60

Shoot, I moderate the damn forums….

  • Coupe 60

My pleasure Jaimes…we missed you that day

Hi Well I can’t believe you are commiting infanticide on the Montebello.

  • the Vayniac shows keep getting better! that was my favorite so far, because of the wines tasted and the rapport just keeps getting better too.

never heard of kahunasfoodandwine.com, but i have now! and signed up!

no way Jets! as a die hard Denver Broncos fan i will never forget this past seasons loss against the Jets at home on a HORRIBLE defensive pass interference call on a 4th and long that gave the Jest the win. AWFUL! Tebow for Life!

I love Rieslings, but have only had Oregon ones, need to expand my palate and try some Austrian and German whites.

Bubbly for no occasion? Yes please! love Champagne! Will drink it anytime.

  • Best of the 3 past episodes, came together really well
1 – Didn’t know the site but I like it,
2 – They make it to the superbowl but lose to the packers (fyi this has been my prediction for the past 2 years, so I’m not just picking for a repeat from the champs)
3 – Love austrian whites, Gruners and Rieslings, had the Domane Wachau Terrassen Federspiel recently and for 18$ was very please, a little residual sugar but enough acidity to make it enjoyable
4 – Not a big fan so no

  • Anonymous

I have to say that I enjoyed the show; it was nice to see some whites finally! I’m a big fan of Ridge, and I would have loved to try that Monte Bello.

    QOTD 1: Unfortunately, no.
QPTD 2: No idea, but if the Jets go that far next year, we will be in for a wild ride on WLTV.
QOTD 3: As a gift once, I received an ’07 R Wines, Southern Gothic, Diddley Bow. It’s the only Aussie Riesling that I’ve had.
QOTD 4: Of course! I only wish I could afford to drink champagne more often!

  • Anonymous

Dang! Afk was hoping Chelios would be in this episode! 😉

  • Anonymous

Great episode… this is a favorite.

QOTD 1: Will check it out.
QOTD 2: Who cares, March Madness is upon us.
    QOTD 3: Too few
QOTD 4: We regularly serve sparkling wine… champagne, not so much

  • 1: WTF?
    2: Maybe
3: For Austria you need to go for: Loimer, Kirchmayr and Veyder-Malberg!!
    4: Sure!

Wow …. again – a great show ! I will most certainly show this to a number of ( english speaking ) wine makers here in Germany … Very interesting insights on all mentioned
wines …. including the “infanticide” mentioned on the two reds …. A bit of this holds true for the 2008 Doennhof – 2008 being a rather feeble vintage in Germany. Apparently Doennhof has left it more residuel sugar – thus giving it more “lifetime” …. and I think this
is the core issue with this wine …. Give it 5 – 10 years and you will see the sweetness slowly deteriorating in time – and give way to a better balance between acidity and sugar. The same effect can be seen in really fat BA´s and TBA´s ….
I couldn´t agree more to what you said about “Wachau Producers” … marketing wise partially much more “focused” then most of their German Colleagues … can´t wait to see them again at the Prowein !!
… Can´t say much to the q´s od … and won´t comment on the Ribera – since I don´t want to bore you … only that it was, is and always will be – A CLASSIC !!
Again – Thanks a lot for this show and your opinion on “Riesling” ……

  • Was really looking forward to watching this tonight, but I can’t pull away from tsunami/earthquake coverage. Will catch up on weekend.
    Stay safe everyone.

    Good times!

QOTD#3: According to my experience it’s hard to go wrong with a Riesling from Domäne Wachau and Bründlmayer whenever you come across one. Especially the single vineyard stuff tends to be great, even more so with some bottle age already.
QOTD#4: Definitely, you should never put Champagne on a pedestal. Just pop a bottle whenever you feel like it.

  • Anonymous

QOTD 1: No. (sorry, Kahuna) BUT I have now!! I’ll check it out.
QOTD 2: Honestly, yes. AND I am rooting for you GV!
QOTD 3: Yes- not amazing, but at under $15 US retail a GREAT value: Hopler Riesling.
QOTD 4: Yes, yes YES!! I drink (mostly dry) sparkling wine OFTEN, be it domestic, French, Spanish, New Zealand…ish, Italian, etc.

Wow, you guys had an incredible day on Monday. Awesome week of episodes!

QOTD: No, agree, have not but need to try some, not often but I should do it more.

Let’s hope I never have any dates leave after I order Champagne 🙂 They should drink it before the bathroom break!

  • I’m willing to lay it down, being an old man I gotta save everything for retierment when there is no more money coming. An empty cellar won’t be good then 🙂

  • will we see 999 today friday? Will 1000 be on Monday?

  • Charlotte K. Jensen

    keep it tight.

  • Charlotte K. Jensen

    Thanks.

  • Charlotte K. Jensen

That I am not worried about- yet anyway 😉

Thanks, but not to worry. I’m going back- soon I hope. The food is amazing- and much cheaper than in Denmark.
