It’s not too sweet? The winery says a touch of sweetness. I’ll give it a 97 and I’ve never seen it.

We went to Portugal in 2006/7 (end of Dec. to first week of Jan.
A bunch of things were great. The wine reminded me of traveling around in Italy in the late 70’s, out of the barrel in to the carafe and to the table. A bit raw and very “new”, but in a good way. Did I mention we were traveling cheap? Going to this small fishing village for new years and discovering that it’s the “Times Square” of Portugal was probably the most memorable. Being told to try the “cauldron” soup there was a highlight. But possibly the “best” thing was a “cake” that we had a slice of in Lisbon the first night. We thought it had coconut in it and it tasted like an Almond cake, sort of. Turns out it’s made with squash.
Portugal is still a place you can go on the cheap. Stay in Pensiones and eat where the locals do and have a GREAT time. Travel by bus (it’s not like Grey Hound – they have “in flight” movies!

    Hi Gary how are you.
Love your show, love your passion about wine and spreading the word about it!!!
Being a Portuguese native, and just watching this video about your tasting of encruzado, I couldn’t help noticing that when you where refering about the red varieties grown in Dão you mentioned that the most popular one in the region was Touriga nacional. Then you said that was the same as tempranillo.
Well I’m afraid that is not correct, Touriga Nacional is a native Portuguese variety and is only konwn as that, Touriga Nacional. On the other hand Tinta Roriz also known as Aragones in Alentejo, a very popular variety in Portugal, is the same as the Spanish Tempranillo.

Thanks and keep up with the good work!
