  • Hey Gary

    Great show; classic WLTV.

QOTD: Probably the most interesting thing I’m noticing about my palate recently is that I’m really getting into Chardonnay. I’m a big Riesling man, but have found myself drinking and enjoying more and more Chardonnay.

    Cheers

After years of drinking almost exclusively red wines, and preferably ‘big reds’ at that, I prefer grower champagnes and whites almost exclusively now. Nowadays I only drink red wine when it will best complement a dish that a white, champagne, or beer simply wouldn’t work.

I am agree with this topic.

QOTD: I had the Flu and mine is lost in space.

QOTD: I’m liking Chianti or Italian wines in general when I’m wanting to drink red. I find also that I am drinking more whites, I especially like whites with good acid and refreshing fruit flavors.

  • Norm

I’m liking flavors other than fruit. I like fruit, don’t get me wrong, but I’m more interested when I find cedar and leather and spice. That I’ve found more in the imported wines, I’m sorry to report, because I’m a bit of a homer.

  • Strongly disagree with those who say Zinfandel is overrated. If anything, it’s the most maligned and under-appreciated varietal.

  • Steve

    Solid show.

QOTD: Absolutely abhorring Pinot Noir lately, in general what i’ve been throwing back has been way too fruity. Since it’s cooler, liking the Cabs, and appropriately the Zinfandels.

I haven’t tried red Zinfandel before and decided to get a bottle. I wish I had viewed your site first. I had a choice between Seghesio Sonoma, Seven Deadly Sins, and Gnarly Head Old Zin.
I picked the 7 Deadly Sins because it was the higher price at $15, Gnarly Head just looked silly.
As it turned out, you liked the Seghesio…well sorta.
I tried the 7 Deadly Sins. Yes, I smell the burned tire rubber. I decanted for an hour and this improved it a little. My experience is thin, but this wine wasn’t horrible. I’ve experienced horrible.
I went to a winery and everything I tasted there went in the bucket and not because I was saving
my pallet for the next wine…gasoline, fire, smoke, burning….whew. I say that this wine is above every one of the wines I tasted that day and these people had the nerve to charge $5 for 5-one ounce servings. I’ll get 4 nice glasses for $15 of Zin.
However, I have one final word….SANGRIA. I’m going to add apple juice, squeeze an orange, put in lemon slices, add some honey, let it set overnite to regain a little power. It’s gonna be good.

  • I drank a lot of white zinfandel before I ever had a real zinfandel and unfortunately, even though they seem worlds apart, the similar flavor profile between them puts me off on the real stuff. That being said, I do enjoy zin from time to time. Right now my palate tends toward spicy wines that are interesting. Sometimes I like a wine to just be interesting over possessing a delicious factor. I like Grenache, Rioja, Malbec.

I am currently enjoying an 07 Grgich Hills Zinfandel. Wow I love this one! Jammy but not oakey (I like the oak) as it was aged in large casks. Going to pick up 2 more bottles this next payday, which will cash me out but worth it. I started drinking white Zins in the early 80’s (after couple bottles of blue nun) Gary I would like to see you review this wine, I think it is the best $30 bottle of wine that I have tried in the last 15 years.
