  • Hey Gary! Us Hokies have a 5th Anniversary present for WLTV! But you have to come to Blacksburg to get it!!!

Seriously, I love the show! Thanks for making wine so fun! 🙂

  • Anonymous

I think because I research all of my big purchases VERY thoroughly and read a TON of reviews, I am not usually disappointed about any big purchase. You brought up houses though, and even though I bought at a low point, I didn’t realize just how much all of the stupid little purchases add up. I hate paying for owning a house LOL… Biggest wine dissapointment was opus one.

  • Hey Gary, happy 5th anniversary!!!, you should come down to Virginia Tech and celebrate with 600 of the biggest vaniacs known to man!!!

  • Anonymous

don’t know Allan? really? lazy college kids….

  • ALLAN

I take this as the ultimate tongue-in-cheek comment!

  • still waiting 🙂

  • First post out of lurker-land. I’m curious – how do producers like those of these two bottles justify such high prices when critics don’t believe the hype?

Also, where’s the Mexico episode? Mott! Gary said you guys did one but it got deleted.

  • ALLAN

I think you’ll have to catch it in the morning………. :))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

    I’m staying uuuuuupppppppp!!!!!

QOTD: Winewise an $80 Gattinara Italian wine. It was good, but I’ve tasted better for much less. Haven’t purchased a home or car in the last 2 years, but if you live in the dirty jerz, I need not say another word about property tax. The most disappointing purchases were probably some online clothing and a fragrance purchase which wasn’t even close to the scent of the first bottle I purchased in person.

  • Anonymous

    LMAO! 😉

Extending the time between episodes is NOT a legitimate way to up the post count Gary!

QOTD: Bought my wife a Louis Vuitton handbag. I knew we were buying the hype by the price but was amazed by how cheap it was — a real piece or crap — the only thing luxurious about it was the price.

  • fat chef

    where’s the thunder show???????

  • Anonymous

Too many expensive mistakes to count. To be in this price range with so much really good stuff out there at even lower prices is somewhat stupid to me. Did either producer think there is a big market for $80-120 kosher wines in the first place?

  • Anonymous

Isn’t it funny how expensive wines bring more dissapointment than enjoyment. But the show, as usual, did not dissapoint thanks to GV.

QOTD: My Iphone 3. Not the phone, but that 3 days after I bought it the v. 4 came out. And even after I asked the “Mac Genius” if I should hold off until the new one came out. LOL

  • Anonymous

bad wine = boo. thanks for the honesty gv.

QOTD: i might not call it expensive, but i’ve been having bad luck with high-end beers. Living in Oregon, I have some friends that rave about $12 bottles of beer, but I think they taste like crap. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good micro-brew, but once you start to barrel-age and add chocolate and molasses, I think you loose the beer flavor.

  • Randall

    Oh you poor, poor noob…

I suppose barrel aging wines ruins that “wine” flavor, too… 🙂
btw There’s Nothing wrong with Deschutes’ XX Porter or Abyss Stout or any of the various Rogue, etc etc brews out there if they’re done right. I’m not trying to be sarcastic or arrogant… just trying to open that palate of yours. Cheers!

  • Anonymous

i suppose a poor noob like me doesn’t have a sophisticated palate like you, Randall

however, beers like the abyss are barrel aged in bourbon barrels. barrel-aging a wine in a bourbon barrel would absolutely ruin the wine flavor. and imagine a winery adding molasses to their cab? would saying you don’t like it mean that you should expand your palate?

  • Randall

No, everyone has their own palate. I just meant that beer has several ingredients available to it, whereas wine only has grapes and yeast (and maybe adjuncts like sugars, etc, etc). Both can be made Many different ways, even within the varietal(s) (wine) or style (beer), and manipulated into many different variations on a theme.
I think you are simply making the mistake of comparing apples to oranges. Of course a winery would not do those things to its wine. Neither would it combine a bunch of other fruits and boil the resulting wort for hours. A brewmaster wouldn’t open the vessel while the beer was fermenting and “punch down” or “pump over” the mixture, either. I’m not saying my palate is any better than anyone else’s… just maybe more trained in tasting different styles of beer. I have a pretty decent palate with wine, as well, but it needs a bit more of a “workout” before I can keep up with a lot of fellow WLTV fans here in the comments. That in No Way means I am inferior to them, just not as practiced.
Cheers, and no offense meant in any way…

  • Anonymous

QOTD: Numanthia Numanthia 1999. Really awkward, closed, and not showing much fruit or flavor.

  • Anonymous

ok dude, you keep saying no offense, but i think that’s because you know you’re talking down to me.

Maybe because I said I’ve been having bad luck with high-end beers, you think that means I’m a Budwiser drinker or something. Maybe because I am new to this particular wine blog, you think I am new to tasting for quality. But if I say that the Deschutes Abyss is aged in bourbon barrels and brewed with molasses, than you should maybe assume I know the difference between wine and beer.

While I see no need to defend my palate, let me just say I’ve made a lot of beer and a lot of wine in my life, and tasted even more. I know the difference between “punch downs” and boiling fruit into a wort for hours (for the record, you get too much tannin if you boil for hours. boil fruit 15 minutes for flavor, add more at 5 minutes for aroma)

The qotd was “what high-end purchases have left you dissapointed?”, and I said that I’ve been dissapointed with high-end beers, because think they are too worried about things like bourbon barrels and molasses, and they loose the beer flavor. To compare apples to oranges: think of them as over-oaked California chardonnay. Now, if you also have a palate for beer, and would like to discuss that, or even disagree with me, I am interested in your opinion.

But don’t tell me you’re “just trying to expand my palate” because I’m a “noob”. I may be a new commenter, but I’ve been watching this blog for a while, and the point is to make wine accessible to everyone. “Changing the Wine World”. If you want to respond to this, or to any of my future posts, that would be great. But don’t talk down to me.

  • Randall

None taken. And I’m not talking down to you at all. It’s just that there’s no ‘inflection’ in text fonts, no way of ‘sounding conciliatory’ or ‘sincere’ or ‘apologetic’.
If you Had a palate for beer or knew beer styles, you wouldn’t have posted that first comment in this thread. I tried my best to apologize for my misplaced attempt at humor in my first response to you, and explain myself in a realistic, self-effacing manner and you Still took offense, so there’s nothing else I can say…

Pretty funny show. $200 in wine and they all suck.
QOTD: The 5 salt/fertilizer spreaders I bought from Home Depot. I think the last one cost $90 and if the sand is too fine it jams up the mechanism and locks the wheel.

  • Good show. That’s a ridiculous amount of money for those two wines…

QOTD: I bought some hockey gloves that were not cheap… within about two weeks, they were in ruins. I was not psyched.

  • Anonymous

qotd: probably some expensive salt for cooking, atleast it was small

  • Anonymous

Why is it substantially more expensive?

  • Anonymous

Any chance of more background on Kosher wine?

QOTD – my latest electricity bill.

  • I was curious about these hi-end Kosher wines. I get people asking for any Kosher selections on our wine list, and I was looking forward to talking about these wines. Might have to go look at the other Kosher videos now.

QOTD: My Honda Civic CNG(compressed natural gas). I know it was good for the environment, but having to drive 25 miles just to get gas and having as much power as 10 hamsters was a bit of a downer :(.

    Getting soooo close to episode 1K {{{}}}

Miss the fun facts -please try to include a bit of info per episode for a dolt like me to learn, improve and expand my wine knowledge. For example – what are the production, procedural differences between kosher and non-kosher wines? QOTD – an interior design consultation that resulted in zip, nada, not even a swatch of color….what a rip-off!

  • Anonymous

hey – what’s wrong with budweiser? just kidding man – I enjoyed this whole duel you 2 got going – GV should get the 2 of you into the Wine Library ring on the next beer tasting! Bam Kapow! Too much fun. thanks

Ha ha Oregon Wine Guy needs to drink a glass of wine and chill. too funny.

  • Mike in C-town

    Sorry the wines were disappointing…

QOTD: I inadvertently bought an airline ticket (for work) on my personal card. Once I got to the destination, the company “eliminated my position”.

  • Anonymous

I think it’s appalling the price of these wines for what they deliver! Over priced wine really annoys me!

QOTD: Airline tickets to South Africa.

  • Randall

    Boo!! ;P

  • i had an awful, expensive lunch last month. it was really disappointing.

    QOTD: A parking ticket!

One thing to remember when talking about Kosher wine is the MONOPOLY that Herzog/Kedem/Royal importers have on the market. They jack up prices because no one can stop them. There should be an anti-trust suit brought against them.

  • Anonymous

Already tasted on the thunder show

  • Everybody who makes kosher wine wants to be a millionaire and the wines are horribly over priced. The distribution system is also inefficient because quantities are so small.

If you want appropriately priced kosher wine go to Trader Joe’s.
For red wines they have some Tempranillo blends from Spain for $3.99
They also have a blend of Chardonnay and Macabeo for $3.99 (also Spanish also Terrenal ). They also have Sara Bee Moscato $5.99 (Italian) and perhaps Banero ? Prosecco $7.99 (Italian)I don’t know if this one is still available.

This is something extraordinary in terms of pricing and pretty amazing. The wines are not high end but they are well worth the money and priced appropriately.

  • Alex

Robert Parker gave a 94 points for the Flor…
How come your grade was so far away?
    Thanks!!

  • luca bercelli

    90/100

Line of the day – ‘One of the worst $80 wines I’ve had in a while.’

GV telling it like it is – that’s why we love him.
