Yes, “this wine is a champion!” Nice call Gary – I wish I had a time machine to go back and pick up a few cases of that before the price shot up 😉

    Great episode!

Gary, what happened to the background? Two boxes? No baseball theme?

    My best regards.

  • Yesterday, I just picked up an internet order of 2 bottles each of the 2000 Real Companhia Velha Evel Grande Escolha and the 2000 Caves Sao Joao Bairrada Riserva from the library and after watching this vlog entry on Portugal, I’m so very excited to give them a try. They were featured recently in an email-ing and this description of the gold Portugal will be producing has made me ecstatic that I unknowingly got my hands on some bottles with real potential. Hopefully they’ll be as great as the Quinta da Carolina.

I’ve discovered Quinta da Carolina in a recent trip to Portugal with the 2001 vintage. I agree that this is instant classic, a charmer!

I’m really into Portuguese wines and I wish I lived in the USA to buy a few bottles of the 99!

Thanks for giving us more info about the Tras os Montes appelation and the Cabernet story behind it.

  • You should do more Portuguese tastings so we can get even more wine before it explodes.

BTW..Top 5…this is insane. There should be 500 comments on every vlog you’ve done!

Can’t argue that I don’t love Port. Some friends have even got me to buy some Vinho Verde this past summer to mix it up with the Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling. The trade papers keep telling us that Portugal takes a back seat to Spain in overall quality. But what does that tell us? Plenty of diamonds in the rough to be had for a fraction of the comparative cost.

You plugged an expensive bottle of water? What?

I made it in the top 10 again. Truly amazing. I guess the new vayniacs don’t realize how few comments there were for the early episodes.

    $.20

First appearance of the water bottle. Why did it take 10 episodes if it’s so important. Me? I’m a tap-water person.

Portuguese=Port? Wow, I never realized that! Thanks, Gary. (I’m being serious.) Does this mean if it’s a port it must come from Portugal?

First time Gary gives the thumbs-up before he spits.

Gary, can you taste porto cordovero and tell me what you think? It’s the only port I’ve ever tasted (and only one I’ve ever found that’s KOSHER).

    Good episode. Get fa’shnikin!

  • jeremy

I have yet to taste a wine from Portugal, and now I can’t wait….

  • Anonymous

Tis true that QPR is awesome in portugese red wine but I usually find them quite sweet which is not my farovite but still can’t say too much bad stuff as they make good wine at a reasonnable price

  • Anonymous

Dude I’m in the top 25 comments on this episode! how can that be? this is a “instant classic” hahaha. I have to say i love the wines of Quinta do Vale Meo nd the dry red Portugese wines. Havent seen this particular one though, keep my eyes open

30-40 dollars in 2006. It looks like it was 65 dollars at the WineLib before it was sold out. Portuguese wine has definitely taken off since you made the call, Gary! =)
